was a protest involving special exceptions. Judge Moore then clarified that today’s hearing was covering the change of zoning request. James Richey with Richey Development Engineering in McKinney came to the podium on behalf of his client to answer any questions regarding the rezoning request.

The owner of the property also came to the podium to note that at some point he would like to address the protest to the special exception request made for his property. When there were no questions forthcoming involving the zoning change request, Judge Moore asked for an adjournment motion.

3. Adjourn: Motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn the Public Hearing at 8:25 a.m.

On the same day at 8:30 a.m., County Judge Randy Moore called to order the Public Meeting of the Bois d’Arc Lake Zoning Commission. Noting that Quorum had been established earlier in the Public Hearing, Judge Moore asked if there were any who would like to speak during Public Forum. There were no speakers.

3. Approve meeting minutes from 06/02/2022 Public Hearing and Regular Meetings: A motion was made by Commission Member Gilbert Welch to approve the minutes with Commission Member Kevin Darwin seconding the motion which passed.

Discussion, consideration and action to approve a change in zoning application; 25.08 acres, Property ID# 78153 on old FM 1396 in Windom, from Agriculture & Ranching District to Rural Estate Single Family District and recommend to Commissioners Court for approval: Judge Moore noted this item was covering only the zoning change and asked if there were any wishing to comment. After a brief discussion with Judge Moore reiterating this decision was strictly about the zoning change request that was addressed during the public hearing, Gilbert Welch made the motion to recommend the approval of this zoning change request to the Commissioners Court. His motion was seconded by Kevin Darwin and the motion passed.

5. Discussion, consideration and action to set a public hearing to hear comments regarding a change in zoning request from RE, Rural Estate SingleFamily District to R&C, Retail and Commercial; 2.4819 acres on Property ID# 78364 and 3.8860 acres on Property ID# 78366 in Telephone: Judge Moore noted that the probable date for this hearing would be Thursday, August 4th at 8:20 a.m.

Volunteers Needed at Children’s Center 10/19/21

Press Release - The Fannin County Children’s Center is seeking volunteers for a variety of roles, including CASA advocates for children in foster care, CAC volunteers who supervise children and families at the center, Rainbow Room volunteers who organize clothing and other supplies, Honey

They prepare court reports and testify at court hearings too. Many volunteers successfully manage to volunteer while also working full time and spending time

for the benefit of abused and neglected children. CASA is seeking adult volunteers who can complete training and pass background checks to be appointed by the 336th District Court to serve as Guardian ad Litem for children in foster care.

The Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) is another program of the Children’s Center.

Compassionate CAC volunteers are needed to supervise children, youth and families who are at the center for interviews or counseling. Other volunteers are needed for tasks not directly working with children, such as organizing clothes in the Rainbow Room, helping with light repairs and

maintenance of the building and preparing food for various meetings and trainings.

There will be an informational session on Tuesday, July 26 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm at the center. Information about all the volunteer opportunities available at the center will be reviewed, as well as information about the application process and training requirements.

Attendance at the information session is not a requirement to become a volunteer, however, it is a helpful step to learning more about what it takes to be a volunteer and give an opportunity to ask questions.

Attending the info session will not obligate anyone to become a volunteer.

The next training sessions for CASA volunteers will start August 30. Participants will gain knowledge and learn skills needed to become an advocate for abused children in foster care. All who successfully complete the training will take the CASA oath in the Fannin County District Courtroom on Sept 30.

Applications are now being accepted for all types of volunteers at the Children’s Center.

Di Hopkins began the discussion by noting that the neighboring property owner of the property discussed during the public hearing, did have a problem with the Special Exception Requests for setbacks involving three of the lots near his property (ID# 78149). The specifics of the setback rules, the reason they exist and when special exceptions can be made to those rules were discussed with comments made about the need to be fair and equitable to all parties concerned.

After viewing a map Ms. Hopkins handed the commission, a discussion ensued with the definition of what “storage” entailed. A motion was then made by Gilbert Welch to set a public hearing on this matter for August the 4th at 8:20 a.m. Commission Member Matt Titsworth seconded the motion which passed.

6. Discussion, consideration and action regarding changes and/or modifications by landowners: Judge Moore noted this would be the time for comments regarding

From My Life to Yours: My Wake-Up Call

Proverbs 3:3-6

I have entitled my column for this week “My Wake-Up Call” for a very special reason. Having grown up on the farm and having spent three years in the military service, I knew what wakeup calls were. But this one was very different. In my late teenage years, God had made it very clear to me what His plan was for my life’s work. But I tried to ignore the call. In the meantime, I was now married and had not shared this conviction with my wife. I grew miserable in my disobedience. And then the “wakeup call” came.

I had worked the midnight

shift at the Texas Company Refinery. I was sleeping soundly when I was awakened by my wife who was saying, “Wake up Bill. We have to talk. Is there something wrong with our marriage?” Startled, I sat on the side of the bed and we had a heart to heart talk. I assured her that the burden that I had was due to my hesitance in saying “yes”.

Then she responded “What are you waiting for? I am ready when you are.”

From that memorable moment we committed our lives to serve God in the capacity of His choosing. That was in the spring of 1947. God gave us 65 years of ministry together. God did the plan-

ning, and my wife did the encouraging. Her wake-up call was what I needed. I’m so glad she called.

To be sure not everyone is to be a minister. But everyone is to be a servant. God has a plan for every life.

Someone has said “God not only calls the qualified, but He qualifies the called.”

I believe that the road to happiness is to walk with Him as He directs your paths.

I challenge you to a life of service. It begins as you accept Jesus as your Saviour.

It continues as you present your bodies in sacrificial service to, for and with Him. Read - Proverbs 3:3-6 and Romans 12:1.

Many people do not believe in Hell, a place of torment that lasts forever and ever. Many people do not believe that God would send anyone to a place like Hell. It is import not to ask what people believe, but what does the Bible say. Let us consider how God’s word describes Hell.

Hell is described as Everlasting. Jesus said that the King, “shall say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41). Isaiah pens that “The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us

shall dwell with everlasting burnings?” (Isaiah 33:14).

Hell is described with heat.

John records that “whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15).

The Lord, in describing the judgement day, said that the “Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 13:41-42).

Hell is described as ‘fire and brimstone’ and ‘unquenchable’.

CENTRAL A general rainfall covered the area and was the first significant moisture in three weeks. Temperatures were 100-plus degrees 21 days in June. The rainfall was too late for corn as most fields were drying down. Corn harvest was getting underway, but field checks revealed insufficient kernel development and fill, suggesting some decreased yield potential. The second cutting of hay was lower than expected. Hay costs were creeping up, and some producers were cull-

ing livestock. Overall pasture and rangeland conditions were poor. Sale barns reported a higher volume of cattle sales. Stock tanks were drawing down. A large infestation of blister beetles was reported.

EAST Drought conditions persisted. A lack of rainfall has put hay production at a standstill. Pasture and rangeland conditions were poor to fair. Subsoil and topsoil conditions were very short to short. Current hay production amounts were well below average, and yields

had many producers very concerned. Livestock were doing fair to good with some supplementation taking place. Low amounts of hay, high feed prices and possible water supply shortages were pushing producers to implement culling strategies.

NORTH Soil moisture ranged from very short to short. High temperatures moved conditions in the wrong direction.

Hay fields needed rain. Producers reported a 50% hay yield from the first cutting, but zero rain since had not allowed fertilizer applications or provided growth.

Good to excellent quality hay bales were at or above $100 each. Soybeans were doing well. Corn looked nice. Sunflowers and cotton were doing well. Cattle were in good condition, and spring born calves were doing well. Parasite and fly loads were decreasing. Goat kidding was go-

ing well.

WEST CENTRAL Conditions were mostly hot and dry with some isolated rain showers and cooler temperatures early in the week. Wheat produced well below average yields.

Cotton fields needed rain.

Rangeland conditions were poor. Supplemental feeding of cattle continued. Cattle were still being culled and sold as tank water declined.

SOUTH Northern and western areas were very short on moisture while eastern and southern areas were very short to short. Temperatures remained hot, but some areas received scattered rainfall with amounts ranging from

traces to 1.5 inches in several areas and up to 5 inches in isolated areas. Peanut planting was complete.

Growers were considering late-planted sesame, but dry conditions discouraged planting. Sunflower harvest was complete, and sesame harvest will begin soon.

Citrus and sugarcane crops were being irrigated. Vegetable production slowed due to the extreme heat. Corn fields continued to dent and mature with harvest around the corner. Farmers were test cutting sorghum. There were reports of heavy sugarcane aphid infestations.

Harvest should not take long for corn and sorghum due to limited acreage. Cot-

ton was blooming, but dryland fields were stressed.

Pasture and rangeland conditions were very poor to good, and fields with irrigation were good to excellent.

Hay fields continued to be cut and baled. Producers estimated near-total losses for most small grain grazing crops. Livestock producers were still providing heavy amounts of supplemental feed and culling herds. Supplemental feeding reduced in some areas.

Stock tanks were extremely low in some areas and in good shape in others. Hay and feed prices continued to rise. Sale volumes were average, and prices were steady at local markets.

South Summary The rapid onset of drought continues to affect parts of the Tennessee and Lower Mississippi Valley with a continued increase in coverage of short-term moderate drought (D1).

Western Tennessee and northern Mississippi were especially dry the past two weeks with many areas receiving less than 0.25 inches of rainfall. This dryness was combined with above-normal temperatures.

Therefore, severe drought (D2) was added to parts of northern Mississippi and western Tennessee.

30day SPEI, EDDI, and soil moisture indicators were

used as guidelines in these degradations.

Likewise, D0-D1 was also expanded across northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The number of Arkansas counties, designated with burn bans, continues to increase. In the 6 week period since May 25, Jonesboro, Arkansas has recorded 1.17” of precipitation, or about 25% of normal.

This is the driest such period since 1952. SPI values, starting at 120 days through the past 24 months, along with CPC’s leaky bucket soil moisture (lowest percentile) supported an expansion of D4 across the Texas Panhandle.

Closer to the Gulf Coast, heavy rainfall (more than 1.5 inches) resulted in widespread 1-category improvements to southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas. In areas that received more than 5 inches of rainfall such as southwest Louisiana, a 2-category improvement was justified. A small 2-category improvement was also made to northeastern Texas that received 3 to 6 inches of rainfall. Recent, heavy rainfall also led to a trimming of the extension of moderate drought (D1) across central Mississippi.

Safety is important when using ATVs and UTVs

Many Texans have been injured or killed in accidents involving all-terrain and utility task vehicles (ATVs and UTVs). That’s why it’s important for both adults and children to keep safety in mind when riding.

According to Cultivate Safety’s All Terrain and Utility Task Vehicles campaign, there are more than 100,000 emergency room visits annually in the U.S. due to ATV and UTV accidents, and about 650 fatalities occur each year. Children are involved in about 25-60% of these injuries and fatal incidents.

ATVs and UTVs can weigh more than 2,000 pounds and roll over easily. Some of the most common injuries and fatalities are from rollovers, run-overs, falls and ejections from the vehicles.

Follow and share these rules of the trail to make safety a part of the plan for every ride and help reduce ATV-related deaths and injuries:

Always wear a helmet and other protective gear, such as eye protection, boots, gloves, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.

Take a hands-on safety course.

Do not allow children under 16 to operate an adult-size ATV or UTV. Riders younger than 16 should drive only ageappropriate youth models and never adult models.

Do not drive ATVs or UTVs on paved and public roads.

Ensure the operator can safely operate the vehicle and perform tasks.

“Whether you are riding to work or riding to play, please ride to live by being safe,” the Cultivate Safety Slogan says.

Cooper GREAT. Water lightly stained; 88 degrees; 2.50 feet low. In the summer heat fish the first few hours daylight for the best bites. Catfish are good off docks and shorelines with cut bait. Crappie are good on main lake brush piles and standing timber with jigs and minnows. Bass are fair early morning with topwaters, transitioning to deeper water structures midmorning with chatterbaits and crankbaits.

Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 82 degrees; 1.04 feet low. Channel catfish are good on baited holes in 10-20 feet of water. Bluegill are good in 10-20 feet of water on brush piles.

White bass have a sporadic topwater bite throughout the day, but only last a couple seconds so don’t waste your time chasing them unless you spot the action early in the morning. Look in 15-25 feet of water on main lake points. Crappie are good in 15-20 feet of water on brush and rock. Report by Carey Thorn, White Bass Fishing Texas.

Texoma EXCELLENT. Water stained; 82 degrees; 1.68 feet above. Hybrid bass are good with topwaters early for big fish, switching to slabs after the fish move down. by a car. The warden saw no evidence that the animal had been struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was cited for possession of white-tailed deer in closed season and released. The warden then spent the next three hours on foot searching the area where he believed the deer was shot, and found a single shot .22 rifle laying in the ditch. An arrest warrant was issued for a Travis County resident for hunting from a vehicle. The charges are pending.

Just Leave that Fawn Alone A Bell County game warden was alerted to a person who had stopped at a gas station with a fawn in her vehicle.

The complainant sent pictures and a license plate number, which showed the vehicle registered to a woman in Rogers. The warden also learned the woman had an arrest warrant for assault with bodily injury. The warden contacted the suspect, who admitted to driving the deer around in her car; however, she couldn’t find it now on her 10-acre property. The woman was placed under arrest for the warrant and for illegal possession of the white-tailed deer.

Caught by the Tail A state trooper observed an alligator tail sticking out of an ice chest during a recent traffic stop, and contacted a Jasper County game warden.

The trooper noted there were no tags or documentation on the tail. The warden made contact with the Hardin County resident and seized the alligator tail. Several citations are pending along with civil restitution.

A Combustible Situation A Gonzales County game warden received a tip that a white-tailed doe may have been shot during or before a grass fire started in the southern part of the county.

Armed with details about a vehicle that had burned in the fire, the warden pieced together information that led to a group of hog hunters who had entered the field, where one of them shot a whitetailed doe. At some point after the doe was shot, the hunters’ vehicle caught the field on fire, along with their vehicle. Cases filed include hunting without a valid license, taking whitetailed deer in closed season and civil restitution. Assistance from the Nixon-Smiley Police Department was paramount in the investigation.

Road-Killed, not Road Kill A Travis County man was arrested recently on a warrant charging him with hunting from a vehicle for an incident back in January in Blanco County. A Blanco County warden had received a call regarding a shot fired from a roadway and with assistance from local law enforcement caught up to the suspect. The warden discovered a dead white-tailed deer in a trash bag in the bed of the subject’s truck, and observed a small bullet wound to the deer’s head. The subject stated he had picked up the deer from

OBITUARIES WILLIAM HENRY BOEHLER William Henry Boehler Age 85 passed away May 15, 2022 in Paris, Texas.

William was born October 8, 1938 son of Frank and Willie Mae Phillips Boehler in Honey Grove, Texas. He married Cathy Smith July 3, 1969. William was a kind and loving man and had many friends in the Paris and Honey Grove area.

William worked many jobs and was retired from T & K Machine Shop and farming. He graduated Honey Grove High School and was of the Baptist faith. Survived by his wife, Cathy and daughter Nicole Boehler of the home, son Cody Boehler and wife Angie of Paris,Texas. Also, sister-in-law Debbie Boswell and husband Mike, Paris, Texas, brothers Frank Boehler of Honey Grove, Texas, James and Mary Boehler, LaRue, Texas, sisters Hattie Sherwood, Windom, Texas, Tommie McDowell, Honey Grove, Texas, Ruth Logan, Farmers Branch, Texas, Mary Frank’s, Waxahachie, Texas and many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by sister, Elizabeth Wall, his parents, father and mother-in-law, and sister-in-law Sue.

JULIA FAYE DELISSE Julia Faye DeLisse age 75, of Bonham, Texas passed away on July 1, 2022 in Denison, Texas. Julia was born on July 6, 1946 in Kingston, Oklahoma to Thomas and Almita Lucille (Pershica) Ned.

Julia was a loving homemaker to her family. She married David West DeLisse in 1990 and they have been blessed with 32 years of marriage. She was of the Baptist Faith and she enjoyed Indian beadwork, quilting, sewing, fishing, and playing penny slots. But most of all she loved her time with family, friends, and especially her grandchildren.

Julia is preceded in death by her parents; son Bobby Vandenburg; daughter in law Stormy Vandenburg; brothers Ivan Ned, Edwin Ned, Elwin Ned, Fred Ned, and Tommy Ned and sister Sue Metcalf.

Julia is survived by her loving husband David West DeLisse of the home; daughter Samantha Cirkles and husband Dean of Telephone, TX; son Ronnie Vandenburg 7/12/2022 and wife Nelda of Bokchito, OK; brother Bobby Ned and wife Norma; sisters Jan Brooks, Mary Jane Vandenburg, and Patty Peebles and husband Rauel; grandchildren Stacy Christman, Allen Graham, Marcia Cirkles, Jackie Cirkles, Trinity Vandenburg, Kayla Pierce, Lakyn Collinsworth, and Branten Vandenburg; numerous great grandchildren and extended family and friends.

Bonham- William Daniel Shaw, age 21 of Telephone, TX was welcomed into heaven by Grammie and Papa, and Mamaw and Papaw on Saturday, July 2, 2022. He was born on October 13, 2000 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

William loved working on vehicles; he worked at Texas Tires in Sherman, TX as a tire technician.

William was the sweetest and most loving person. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed going to the Red River. William was a member of the Lamasco Baptist Church.

She entered her eternal home with her Lord and savior on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 while at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, TX. Connie married Richard Eugene Hespe on August 5, 1979 in Gillette, WY. She was an equipment operator and worked in the coal mines. Connie enjoyed knitting and quilting with her mom, she enjoyed bird watching and loved animals of all kinds. Connie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She is a member of the Sandy Baptist Church.

Connie is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Richard Hespe of Ivanhoe, TX; daughter, Toby Gist and husband Cary of Ravenna, TX; son Leonard Hespe and wife Grace of San Diego, CA; son, Sean Kaplan and wife Amber of Hulett, WY; grandchildren, Jacob Olson, Luke Cundy, Caleb Cundy, Angelica Hespe, AJ Hespe, Daniel Kaplan, Kaley Kaplan, KC Kaplan, and Tessa Kaplan; siblings, Howard Henneman and wife Barbara, Carol Ledford and husband Jim, and David Henneman and wife Kristy; brother-in-law, Vic Hartman in addition to numerous extended family and friends.

Carole entered the Kingdom of Heaven peacefully on July 4, 2022.

Carole was born in San Antonio, Texas on October 5, 1940, to parents AC and Fannie Mae Taylor. She met her husband, Leon, through her mother who worked with him. Later in high school, Carole and Leon began dating, and on February 14, 1959, they were married in San Antonio. Carole and Leon had two children, and in 1969, settled in Richardson, Texas to raise their family. Carole worked as a purchasing agent for a variety of companies in the metroplex. In 1993, she and Leon moved to a farm in Trenton with future retirement plans.

During her life, Carole was a proud member of the First Baptist Church in Trenton where she was involved with the WMU; Santa Gertrudis Association; Toastmasters; and the Jaycees. She loved volunteering at Vacation Bible Schools and enjoying the outdoors, especially Rocky Mountain National Park.

She is survived by her husband Leon, daughter and son-in-law Linda and Joe Bryan, son and daughter-in-law Lee and Mary Anne Moore, and her four grandchildren: Jennifer Jaco and husband Michael; Jeannine Bryan and fiancé Nick Patton; Jackson Moore and wife Emily; and Reed Moore.

Allen Ray Shipp was born Sept. 13, 1967 in McKinney, Texas, the son of Thomas Lambert “Tommy” Shipp and Sheila Faye Campbell Shipp.

He was a truck driver for a number of years. He loved to dance and enjoyed country and western music. He also loved spending time with family and friends. Allen attended the Pentecostal church.

Allen passed away Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, TX. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Wise Funeral Home, Bonham, TX. Allen was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Fronia Daniels Campbell and Cecil Campbell and paternal grandparents, Goldie Shipp and R. D. Shipp.

The Celebration of life for Daniel Echols, age 63, of Bonham, Texas will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 6.

Daniel Echols passed away Thursday, June 30, 2022.

Daniel Echols was born April 10, 1959, the son John Coleman Echols and Alma Lou Winn Echols. Daniel loved his small-town life and lived it to the fullest. He could always be found at home, or down on the Sulfur River hunting arrowheads and artifacts. This is where he had his personal relationship with God. While down in the river he would give thanks to God. Facing the East, South, and West he would say thank you for the seeds and the winds for growing the harvest; he would then face North and give thanks for the North Star representing Jesus. He loved his family and friends with his whole heart and would help anyone that he could.

The love of his life Cathy Forbis lives in Paris with her daughters and granddaughter, Daniel loved them dearly. He was an avid collector of Hot Wheels cars and was always on the hunt for the perfect unique one.

He gained a Great Grandson, Bryson James, and they shared the love of playing with Hot Wheels cars together. Bryson called him Papa Dan. Daniel served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and was very proud to be an American. He loved watching the drag races, and purchased tickets for himself and his crazy niece Christi with whom he shared a special bond. They went to Ennis, Texas and got to see the action up close with pit passes! He had a gentle spirit and loved God’s creation of nature and respected it. Daniel Echols is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Johnny Loyd Echols.

Daniel Echols is survived by his companion of 18 years, Cathy Forbis, daughters, Rena Sisson (Larry) of Paris, Texas, Ashley Spann of Paris, Texas, brother, Larry Echols (Marilyn) of Sherman, Texas, sister, Terrie Echols of Bonham, Texas, granddaughter, ShiAnn Sisson, great grandson, Bryson James, nieces, Christi Tynan (John) of Ivanhoe, TX, and Rebecca Martin of Bonham, TX, great nephew, Gary Spaugh, great nieces, Hailey Martin and Tori Martin.

ALEXIS NICHOLE (ROGERS) DAVIS

Alexis Nichole (Rogers) Davis passed peacefully at her home on June 30, 2022.

Alexis was born on January 22,1982. She was diagnosed a Type 1 Diabetic at the age of 10.

She became a summer participant at Camp Sweeney that year and attended every summer as long as they would let her! She made lifelong friends and participated in the custom of lighting the Sweeney candle when a friend passed.

She graduated from Bonham High School in 2000 and Kilgore Junior College as a Registered Nurse in 2011.

Over the years, she has had many medical struggles and in 2013 suffered a traumatic brain injury. Being the fighter she is – with intense physical therapy - she relearned how to walk, talk, read, write and tie her shoes. After 2 years, Alexis was well enough to attend Texas Women’s University to complete her Bachelor of Science Degree graduating in 2017.

She was very proud of her nurse status and being able to listen to her patients needs became her forte.

She leaves behind her son, Landon Davis, Mother - Jamie Gentry, Stepfather – James Gentry, Sister – Danielle Ramage, Brothers Jeremy Rogers and Sean Rogers and his wife Megan. Nieces and Nephews – Kylie and Natalie Ramage - Arthur, Myra, Sophia, Josie, Helen, Ella, Luke, Phillip, and Rose Rogers – Ollie and Shug Rogers.

And a plethora of Cousins, Aunts, Uncles, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father - Greg Rogers.

A memorial gathering for Roger Keith Polly, 76, of Randolph, Texas will be held at Wise Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday, July 1, 2022. Roger passed away Thursday, June 30, 2022 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, TX. Roger was born July 21, 1945 in Fleming, Kentucky, the son of Nathaniel Polly and Juanita Watts Polly. He attended Whitesburg, Kentucky schools and was a US Army veteran (1965-1967) Roger married Janice Lynn Farmer on Nov. 17, 1965 in Clintwood, Virginia.

He was an assemblyman for Ford Motor Company for many years.

Roger was a member of the First Baptist Church in Randolph and the Ashley Masonic Lodge in Bailey, TX. He enjoyed deer hunting, golfing, playing horseshoes, traveling and camping. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Christopher Keith Polly (1998), two brothers, Dan Polly and Denver Polly, and a sister, Joann Bates.

Texans Face Skyrocketing Home Energy Bills As The State Exports More Natural Gas Than Ever

Texans are seeing skyrocketing home electric bills this spring and summer, with many customers paying at least 50% more than they did for electric bills at this time last year.

And nobody seems to know when costs will go down.

“I am worried people are going to be shocked,” said John Ballenger, vice president at Texas retail electric provider Champion Energy. “Realizing this is 50 or 60 or 70% higher than what they had paid be-

fore, I’m just not sure it’s real to people yet. If it’s not, it will be very, very soon when the bills hit this summer.”

The elevated utility bills have primarily been driven by the price of natural gas, which has shot up more than 200% since late February when Russia, a top gas-producing country, invaded Ukraine and upended the world’s energy market.

Since then, Texas, the leading natural gas-producing state in the U.S., has not been able to keep offering its own residents cheap energy.

Since the war in Ukraine began, Texas has been exporting more natural gas than ever before, sending much of it to Europe as many countries try to wean themselves off Russian gas. Congress lifted a longtime ban on exporting U.S. oil and gas in 2015, which opened world markets to Texas oil and gas producers.

But demand for natural gas has also been growing at home as more people and businesses continue to flock to Texas. A hotter-than-normal spring and early summer also have driven demand for power to recordhigh levels. Most Texas power plants run on natural gas.

“We’ve seen Texas gas go over to Europe, which has then created a supply issue locally in the state of Texas,” said Cory Kuchinsky, chief financial officer and treasurer for CPS Energy, San Antonio’s municipal utility that provides energy to more than 1 million customers. “Our customers feel the real-time impact of changing fuel costs.”

The hike in utility bills comes

during difficult financial times for many Texans, who have also been facing high prices at grocery stores and the fuel pump due to growing inflation.

How long will Texans see higher utility bills?

With the war in Ukraine dragging on and upending the world energy market, Texas electricity providers are cautioning customers that the high rates could linger for months or longer.

The higher prices will, however, benefit some Texans. As a major gas producer, the state typically benefits from high oil and gas prices in the form of jobs and state taxes on oil and gas production. Cities located in the state’s oil fields usually benefit even more.

But despite the spike in demand, the oil and gas industry isn’t seeing major production growth because of a backlog of orders for vital equipment due to supply chain issues stemming from the pandemic, said Garrett Golding, energy economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

“There’s also a shortage of labor across most of the oilfield services,” Golding said, noting that companies are trying to hire aggressively. “But we’ve seen it for several quarters now: It is a struggle to get qualified people into the positions (companies) want right now.”

Is the price of natural gas the only cause? While they agree the price of natural gas is the

primary driver behind Texas utility bills, energy experts say there are other factors at play.

The state’s main power grid operator, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, has been managing the grid more cautiously since last February, when millions of people were without power for days in subfreezing temperatures after a combination of cold weather across the state and skyrocketing demand for energy shut down power plants as well as the natural gas facilities that supply them with fuel. Hundreds of people died.

Public Utility Commission chair Peter Lake, appointed

by Gov. Greg Abbott after the winter storm to lead the agency in charge of ERCOT, has said the grid operator is no longer prioritizing providing Texans cheap power. Instead, Lake said, its main focus is the grid’s reliability, especially during extreme hot or cold weather. But that has a price.

“Conservative operations add costs,” said Cathy Webking, a longtime Texas energy lawyer.

ERCOT’s new approach to operating the grid means asking power plants to be online and available in case they’re needed, and that means paying generators a prescribed price to operate no matter what happens. Before the 2021 winter storm, power plants ramped up or went offline based on market demand.

The Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life in Jackson, Mississippi years ago sent graduate students out across the South to small towns that used to have a Jewish community to interview current residents (if there were still Jewish people there) and to learn about the history of the town and of the Jewish community.

I saw that Bonham was one of the towns listed. I never knew that there had been a Jewish presence there and it’s an hour from Dallas where I live. I did some research and contacted the Sam Rayburn Home and Museum/Library and the Fannin County Historical Museum. I went to Bonham several times in early 2020.

The people I met at the tourist bureau, at the Museums (the Sam Rayburn Library is part of the Briscoe Center of American History in Austin where TJHS archives are stored), and local merchants were so excited that we were coming to Bonham for a board meeting in early June. There’s now a small exhibit at the FCHM because of our upcoming meeting (it was organized over the last two years). They were all disappointed that we had to cancel the meeting for the

In fact, one of our presenters, Malinda Allison, has continued the research of Jewish merchants in Bonham in the late 1800’s into the 20th century, and has self-published a book about the merchants and has given a presentation to the Bonham Rotary Club about these families.

There is a small Jewish cemetery in the Willow Wild Cemetery (1220 W. 7th Street) with about 10 Jewish tombstones.

Research has been done and the land was never consecrated as a Jewish cemetery. The Texas Jewish Historical Society is going to honor those former Bonham residents with a consecration service Sunday July 17th, at 12:15PM at Willow Wild, which will be conducted by Avi Mitzner, Ritual and Cemetery Director for Congregation Shearith Israel in Dallas. The Society invites the community to attend the Consecration service: we will be walking the perimeter of the area so please wear comfortable shoes and it is requested that men wear a hat.

The Bonham community has been so helpful, and I look forward to having our meeting there the weekend of July 15th.

IVANHOE -- Four years ago, Class 2A Sam Rayburn produced its best boys’ basketball season in more than a decade.

The three-round advance completed Sam Rayburn’s third of three-straight trips to the boys’ basketball postseason.

Expect for those type of seasons to be the norm -- and not the exception -- for Sam Rayburn boys’ basketball, according to new head coach Duncan Hudson.

“I’m going in with high goals. I don’t want to just settle for making the playoffs -- I want to win games,” said Hudson, who was hired for the position in March.

The Rebels will remain in 142A for basketball for the next two seasons with Honey Grove, Trenton, Celeste, Merit Bland, Tom Bean and Wolfe City. Whitewright, which is dropping from 3A, will join the returning teams, nixing the need for district byes on each night of play.

TRENTON -- Graduation didn’t equate the end of Misty Spindle’s softball career.

The 2022 Trenton graduate will continue her diamond days at Dallas Christian College in Farmers Branch.

“I have always loved softball and being able to further my carrier has been a dream come true,” said Spindle. “The game has brought me joy and taught me more things than I ever could have imagined.

“I am happy to extend my carrier at Dallas Christian College,”” she said. “I chose Dallas because it is close to home and a small campus that feels like home.

Spindle earned secondteam all-district status this spring, as Trenton won 152A and made its eighth trip overall and in the last nine complete softball seasons to the regional quarterfinals.

She garnered an all-district honorable mention in 2019 and 2021 -- her sophomore season truncated just after district play had begun due to worldwide COVID-19 spread concerns.
