What If Every Adult

Fannin County Children’s Center In the 2026 census estimates, there are approximately 27,042 adults age 18 and older living in Fannin County. That number may seem like just another statistic — until you stop and consider what it could represent. What if every one of those adults completed child abuse prevention training such as Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children® program?

What if every teacher, coach, pastor, volunteer, par-

ent, grandparent, neighbor, business owner, and community member understood the warning signs of abuse, knew how to respond appropriately, and felt empowered to protect children before harm occurred?

It would not simply create a trained community.

It would create a culture of protection. Too often, conversations surrounding child abuse begin only after a child has already been harmed. Com-

munities mobilize after disclosures are made, investigations begin, and trauma has already taken root. While intervention and advocacy are critical, prevention remains one of the most powerful — and underutilized — tools we have.

Child abuse prevention training changes the mindset from reacting to abuse to actively preventing it. Programs like Stewards of Children® teach adults how to recognize grooming be-

haviors, identify boundary violations, respond to disclosures, and create safer environments for children. More importantly, they challenge one of the greatest dangers surrounding abuse: silence. Children rarely have the power, language, or confidence to protect themselves alone. Prevention depends on adults paying attention. It depends on adults being willing to ask difficult questions, report concerns, and create environments where children

feel safe enough to speak.

Imagine the impact if 27,042 adults shared that responsibility.

Imagine every youth sports program having trained volunteers.

Every church understanding protective policies.

Every classroom supported by informed adults.

Every family equipped with practical knowledge about internet safety, healthy boundaries, and warning signs.

Predators often rely on se-

crecy, isolation, and community discomfort. Prevention training disrupts all three. A trained adult is more likely to notice behavioral changes.

More likely to intervene when boundaries are crossed. More likely to believe a child.

More likely to report concerns early.

More likely to prevent abuse before it escalates.

My Date Night with a Democrat

Now before my Republican friends delete me on Facebook, hear me out. Mrs. Judy Teller is a Democrat. A hardcore Rayburn Democrat. Past President of the Fannin County Democratic Women - state convention kind. She doesn't whisper it either.

And I'm a registered Republican. More of a Rayburn-ublican, if we're being honest. The kind that occasionally gets accused of not acting enough like a Republican. Ms. Judy and I are also separated by a generation. She's closer to my mom's age than mine. On paper, we don't match. Yet I invited her to H. Compton's, Republican campaign watch party. The scandal.

Imagine one of the best known Democrats in Fannin County walking into a room full of Republicans. Not to protest, argue, or convert anyone to a cause, like social media would have you believe.

Just to support someone she believed was the best choice for Fannin County.

And there were other Democrats there too. Weird, right?

On the drive over we talked Fannin County and its future. The things that actually matter here. And I learned so much from her.

Somewhere along the way, we've convinced ourselves that political parties are identities instead of tools. They're not.

A hammer is a tool. A political party is supposed to be a tool too.

You choose the tool that you believe is best suited to accomplish a goal. Neither one is supposed to become your personality.

Somehow we've reached a point where people are willing to end friendships, dismiss neighbors, and stop listening to one another because of a political label.

Because that's exactly what's happening.

Ms. Judy reminded me that there are still people who care more about the future of this county than winning political arguments, and care more about neighbors than labels. People who understand that character matters more than party affiliation.

The next 250 years won't be determined by which political party wins the next election. It will be about how we listen and respect each other’s differences.

By whether we're willing to listen.

By whether we're willing to work together.

And by whether we're willing to loan somebody a better hammer when they need one.

As for my date and me?

Don't worry.

You'll never catch us identifying as hammers. However, you may catch us together using some to break down some walls.

Dialysis Center

The decision of a town of this size to neglect its most susceptible citizens and put them in harm's way is troubling. A decade or so ago, Bonham boasted a commendable dialysis center that catered to the needs of its patients. For reasons not made public, the center was abruptly shut down, leaving patients to fend for themselves. The affected individuals ranged from the young to the elderly. With the nearest alternative in Sherman, TX, patients faced burdensome journeys exceeding an hour each way. The majority, lacking personal transportation, were forced to rely on others for support, often enduring lengthy waits or complicated arrangements. The core issues remain unaddressed: what prompted the center's closure, and why were no provisions made for the patients' well-being and transportation? Why did the authorities seemingly turn a blind eye to the plight of these citizens? An abandoned building stands as stark evidence to the desertion of vulnerable patients.

Industrial manufacturer moving operations to Bonham

BONHAM, Texas (KXII)

- Vector Systems broke ground Wednesday on an 18,000-square-foot expansion at its facility in Bonham.

Vector Systems Inc. is a global manufacturer of industrial process equipment. The company is currently based in McKinney but is moving all of its operations to Bonham over the next several months.

“We need this expansion in order to handle the work we have coming,” said Dustin Davinia, President. Davinia said he told his employees about the move four years ago. The company chose Bonham as its new home because of what it has to offer.

“Wide open skies, friendly people, beautiful lakes,” Davinia said.

The manufacturer will bring jobs to Texoma. Davinia said when the company’s growth started, it had 39 employees. Today it has 132 employees, and many of them are already in Fannin County.

The company expects to keep growing as the move becomes official.

“We’ve been actively hiring from Fannin and Grayson counties and training those people,” Davinia said. The company expects ev-

And perhaps most importantly, widespread prevention training communicates something powerful to children: the adults around you are paying attention, and your safety matters.

Child abuse prevention deserves urgency. The lifelong effects of abuse — including trauma, mental health struggles, substance misuse, educational disruption, and cycles of violence — impact not only individual children, but on entire communities for generations. Prevention training is not about fear. It is about awareness. It is about responsibility.

It is about building a community where protecting children is everyone’s job, not just the responsibility of professionals. No training can eliminate abuse entirely. But education creates informed adults, informed adults create safer environments, and safer environments create stronger futures for children. If even a fraction of those 27,042 adults chose to become trained advocates for prevention, the impact across Fannin County could be transformational. Because sometimes the most important question a community can ask

It is:

“What are we willing to do to prevent it?”

Honey Grove Library & Learning Center Receives Grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to Support Adult Literacy

Honey Grove, TX

– The Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) recently awarded the Honey Grove Library & Learning Center a generous grant to support adult literacy. The funds contribute to a record setting, single day total of nearly $16 million in grants nationwide—supporting adult, family, and summer literacy programs in the 48 states where Dollar General

the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. “We are grateful for the impact teachers and educators make every day and are excited to have another record setting year of helping expand literacy access for learners of all ages. These funds will help educators enhance their instruction and create opportunities that help empower students to reach their full potential.” The staff of the Honey Grove Library & Learning Center is honored that the

Fannin baseball trio '26 all-stars

It took State championship games teams this season to prematurely end the 2026 softball seasons of Ector and Honey Grove.

Jonesboro defeated Brookeland, 6-5, to win its third-straight Class 1A championship in the sport.

En route, Jonesboro defeated Ector, sweeping the Region II-1A Final best-ofthree series.

(Jonesboro also defeated Dodd City in the 2024 and 2025 region finals, ending the Lady Hornets' State round streak run that had started in 2019 via the first victory.)

Meanwhile, Bosqueville finished as the 2A State Division-I runner-up.

Likewise, Bosqueville defeated Honey Grove, sweeping the Region II-2A Division-I Final best-ofthree series.

In May, Ector and Honey Grove reached the softball region final round, respectively, for the first time since 2018 and 2019.

Three Fannin County athletes made the North Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 1A-4A East Team All-Star roster for 2026. The trio included: Trenton's Nolan Yowell as a pitcher, Sam Rayburn's Jamison Dorris as a catcher and Honey Grove's Jarrmez Daniels as an infielder. They vied at Riders Field in Frisco on June 8.

Bonhi's Hemby, Harrison, Patton on 9-4A s'ball top team for 2026

Three first-team recipients led Bonham's All-District 9-4A softball selections for 2026.

Shortstop Jewyll Hemby, first baseman Katy Harrison and third baseman Parker Patton made the first team for Lady Warriors, a bi-district finalist.

Pitcher Annalyn Stafford, right fielder Haley Capehart, second baseman Jentri Dunlap and catcher Piper Stafford garnered secondteam notoriety for Bonham, which advanced to the postseason as the district's fourth-place qualifier and second seed into the Class 4A Division-II playoffs.

Left fielder Emely Alfaro also earned an honorable mention for the Lady Warriors. Academic all-district recipients were Bethany Dougan, Gray Lancaster, both Staffords, Alfaro, Capehart, Dunlap, Hemby, Harrison and Patton.

Hello everyone! This week’s devotion comes from 1 Timothy 4:12-14. The apostle Paul is encouraging Timothy to keep on leading faithfully despite the fact that he is young. No matter what our age may be, we are encouraged to use the spiritual gifts that God has given us for His honor and glory. Paul encourages Timothy to not be discouraged because of his youth. Lamentations 3:27 reminds us, “It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.”

before He can use them. He looks for willing hearts that pursue holiness, faithfulness, and truth. Whether our role is big or small, we are called to be an example, stay grounded in His Word, and faithfully use the gifts He has given us for His honor and glory.

In 1709, Isaac Watts wrote this hymn that comes from the message in this passage.

and spiritual cleanliness. This principle applies to us, as believers. Godly character often speaks louder than age, position, or experience. Paul instructs Timothy to focus on reading (especially his public reading of Scripture), encouraging and urging people to follow the truth of God, and teaching sound biblical doctrine. Timothy had received a spiritual gift for ministry, recognized by the church elders and affirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands. Paul encourages him not to ignore this gift from God or leave it unused.

God’s Garden: God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

PSALMS 23

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Anthony Peter Irmen

Anthony Peter Irmen, known to all as Tony, passed away peacefully at his home on June 2, 2026, at the age of 82.

Tony was born June 23, 1943, in New Rockford, ND, and grew up on the family farm. He attended Fairville #2 grade school and graduated from Cathay High School in 1961. Tony then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served as an Electronics Technician (Radar) Petty Officer Third Class in the Submarine Service during the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1966. Most of his enlistment was spent aboard the USS Bugara (SS-331) - affectionately known by her crew as ‘the Bug.’ A decorated Balao-class submarine, she was Tony’s home at sea and a source of lifelong pride. While he was honored with several medals for his service, his proudest achievement was the day he earned his “Silver Dolphins.” Representing his designation as ‘Qualified in Submarines,’ this milestone granted him entry into the elite brotherhood of the Silent Service during the most pivotal years of the war.

Upon returning to civilian life, Tony remained in California. Though pursued by law enforcement agencies drawn to his disciplined military background, his love of the outdoors charted his course; he chose a career in new construction to remain outside. In 1980, after accepting an offer to manage a new construction company in Dallas, Tony relocated to North Texas.

Tony and Susan (Merrill) met in Northern California in the late 1970s, began a long-distance romance in 1987, and married in Texas in August 1988. In the early 1990s, they moved from the suburbs to the country, where they remained for over 30 years. Each time the population grew, they would move ‘further out,’ until finally bringing to life their 80-acre ranch - a labor of love that began with the land in 2002 and culminated in the completion of their home and barn in 2006.

The ranch was Tony’s sanctuary. He had a profound appreciation for the life it offered: a peacefulness and privacy that allowed him to fully enjoy the open grazing land, mature wooded areas, secluded ponds, local wildlife, and the vast night skies. Together, they filled the property with life, sharing their home with many pets and a stable of horses—some rescued from neglect, and others they had bred and raised themselves. It was a richly rewarding life built on their shared passions, and they were both deeply grateful for every year spent there.

Though they did not have children of their own, Tony was a natural mentor. He was a remarkably patient teacher with a rare gift for meeting people of all ages exactly where they were, making everyone feel truly seen and valued. Whether exploring a museum, a zoo, or simply sharing his curiosity about the world, he treated everyone with a unique respect that left a lasting mark on their lives.

In December 2021, as the focus shifted toward managing his health, Tony and Sue made the difficult decision to sell their beloved ranch and move to the city. Despite the challenges of a prolonged illness, Tony showed the true meaning of strength and resilience. His fortitude and courage lay not only in his fight against a rare disease, but in the grace, humor, and gratitude he exuded every day. We will forever remember Tony as a selfless, hardworking, and fun-loving man who never hesitated to help a stranger. He was genuinely kind with a gentle spirit, meeting every day with a positivity that always sought the brighter side. Tony will live forever in our hearts, and his light will continue to shine through everyone lucky enough to have known him.

Tony is survived by his wife Susan (Sue); the world’s smartest dog ever, Milo; four brothers: Robert (Cheri) Irmen, Don (Ann) Irmen, Greg (Linda) Irmen, Steve Irmen; three sisters: Kathy (Rusty) Hewitt, Margaret Wittmann, Karen (Wayne) Seckerson; and many nieces and nephews. Tony is also survived by his in-laws: the McLeod family; as well as his good friend and brother from another mother, Donald Shumway.

Tony is preceded in death by his father, Walter Irmen; #1 Mom Peggy Irmen; sisters, Mary Irmen and Patty Lange; and brothers, Leon and David Irmen.

In keeping with Tony’s wishes, there will be no formal services. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched and the cherished memories that remain in all of us.

To honor Tony, please raise a glass, share a favorite story, or perform an act of kindness in his name.

Game Warden Field Notes

You Never Even Called Me by My Name

While patrolling Cedar Creek Lake, Anderson and Henderson County Game Wardens investigated a potential Boating While Intoxicated case. The violator gave consent for a blood sample resulting in an arrest. The wardens assisted with returning the boat to shore since the other occupant was not familiar with operating a boat. Once on shore, one warden walked into the boat ramp parking lot. A vehicle sped into the lot and parked in a handicapped space. The driver then yelled an obscene greeting at the warden, who thought maybe the driver failed to recognize his uniform in the dark. The warden turned on his flashlight to ensure the driver saw his badge. Sitting in the passenger seat, the driver’s son commented on his mother’s regretful choice of greeting. The warden conducted sobriety tests and determined the driver, now belligerent, was intoxicated. The local police department arrived and transported them to a hospital, where the driver

consented to a blood specimen. The test determined that along with her intoxication, she was also suffering from low blood sugar. Her sugar level was treated, and she was placed in jail for a DWI.

TEXAS COMMISSION ON ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

NOTICE OF HEARING

Belle Vie Utilities LLC SOAH Docket No. 582-26-20105

TCEQ Docket No. 2026-0185-MWD TPDES Permit No. WQ0016459001

APPLICATION.

Belle Vie Utilities LLC, 906 Baker Street, McKinney, Texas 75069, has applied to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for new Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (TPDES) Permit No. WQ0016459001, to authorize the discharge of treated domestic wastewater at a daily average flow not to exceed 150,000 gallons per day.

The facility will be located approximately 0.3 miles northwest of the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 1396 and County Road 2985, near the City of Honey Grove, in Fannin County, Texas 75492. The treated effluent will be discharged to an unnamed tributary, thence to Lake Bois d’ Arc, thence to Bois d’ Arc Creek, thence to Red River Below Lake Texoma in Segment No. 0202 of the Red River Basin. The unclassified receiving water uses are minimal aquatic life use for the unnamed tributary, high aquatic life use for Lake Bois d’ Arc and Bois d’ Arc Creek. The designated uses for Segment No. 0202 are primary contact recreation, public water supply, and high aquatic life use. In accordance with 30 Texas Administrative Code §307.5 and the Procedures to Implement the Texas Surface Water Quality Standards (June 2010), an antidegradation review of the receiving waters was performed. A Tier 1 antidegradation review has preliminarily determined that existing water quality uses will not be impaired by this permit action. Numerical and narrative criteria to protect existing uses will be maintained. A Tier 2 review has preliminarily determined that no significant degradation of water quality is expected in Lake Bois d’ Arc and Bois d’ Arc Creek, which has been identified as having high aquatic life uses. Existing uses will be maintained and protected. The preliminary determination can be reexamined and may be modified if new information is received. This link to an electronic map of the site or facility’s general location is provided as a public courtesy and is not part of the application or notice. For the exact location, refer to the application. https://gisweb.tceq.texas.gov/LocationMapper/?marker=-95.970277,33.666388&level=18

The TCEQ Executive Director has completed the technical review of the application and prepared a draft permit. The draft permit, if approved, would establish the conditions under which the facility must operate. The Executive Director has made a preliminary decision that this permit, if issued, meets all statutory and regulatory requirements. The permit application, Executive Director’s preliminary decision, and draft permit are available for viewing and copying at Honey Grove Library & Learning Center, Reference Desk, 500 6th Street, Honey Grove, Texas.
