Baptist Church Builders of Texas Bring Builders to Fannin County 6/1/21 6/15/21 5/11/21

By Connie Estes This week, the Baptist Church Builders of Texas are building a new church from the ground up for Joyful Light Baptist Church in Savoy, Texas. The construction began the week of June 15 with the foundation being poured and a lot of pre-cutting of boards for the building.

At the customary Sunday evening service held on the foundation where the new church will stand, Pastor

Chris Littrell was presented a donation from the workers of over $40,000.

The donation was given by the builders and their families.

The builders work is done in two weeks, each year beginning the third week of June and finishing up the next week. After the builders have completed all the work they can in the five days they are on-site, the Church will finish the remaining tasks.

The first church constructed

by the Baptist Church Builders of Texas was built in 1978 in Dillon, Montana and the organization continues to grow each year. Local churches, along with many of the women who have made the trip, help out with meals so the workers don’t lose much time during the workdays.

I spoke with Mr. Fred Cross and Breanne Donham at the building site, Thursday, June 24. They were a wealth of knowledge and

enthusiasm for the project and the Church Builders organization. Breanna is the granddaughter of Rosemary Donham. Rosemary has been active with the church building group since 1979, one year after the first church was constructed. She remains faithful to this day, helping with the kitchen duties for the week.

Mr. Cross told me the workers stay at RV Parks and hotels during the week of work. He named too many

towns and states to mention as he explained the workers travel from all over Texas and many other states for the construction.

I thank Mr. Tillman Boyd and his wife, Jewell for calling to let us know about this huge event taking place in our County.

Mr. Boyd is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and his service to his fellowman continues today.

Press Release - The story about “Build a Dream” Since 1993, the center has served hundreds of children.

In the past few years, the number of children referred

to our CASA and Children’s Advocacy Center has more than doubled.

In 2017, Facility Task Force was formed and started the process of finding a new home. This team of board, staff and community members toured several other CASA and Children’s Advocacy Centers in the north Texas area to learn what features they would want for new place.

Preliminary drawings were drafted up. The team checked out existing buildings and

**Open 7 Days A Week** searched for land that would be suitable for the new place, several offers were made for about two years, however nothing worked out.

In December 2019, they received a wonderful donation of land from Roy and Jan Reimer.

The land is 8 acres in all, at the southeast corner of Lee and Albert Broadfoot in Bonham. It’s a great loca-

tion, near two schools and centrally located in our town.

In February 2020, they purchased a small lot that is adjacent to the donated land.

In June 2020, Hammett Excavation donated their services to demolish the condemned house on this corner property.

In early 2020, An architect help bring the dream to life. July 2020, they selected

MJMC Architects, PLLC and the planning process started!

The board has set a goal of raising $10 million for this project. As of May 2021, they have $1.5 million for the project.

SARDIS, YOU ARE DEAD!

WHOEVER CLINGS TO HIS LIFE WILL LOSE IT; AND WHOEVER LOSES THEIR LIFE FOR MY SAKE WILL FIND IT. Matt. 10:39 JESUS TO THE CHURCH IN SARDIS: Revelation 3:1-6. To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of the One who holds the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation for being alive, yet you are dead. Wake up and strengthen what remains, which is about to die; for I have found your deeds incomplete in the sight of My God. Remember, then, what you have received and heard. Keep it and repent. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know the hour when I will come upon you. But you do have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments, and because they are worthy, they will walk with Me in white.

Like them, he who overcomes will be dressed in white. And I will never blot out his name from the Book of Life, but I will confess his name before My Father and His angels. He who has ears that can hear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

The Letter to Sardis is the shortest letter that Jesus wrote to the churches in Revelation just prior to revealing God’s plan for the world. Jesus primarily had words of warning rather than encouragement. The Church in Sardis needed an Emergency Response. The plague of death was sweeping through their midst unaware. Sardis thought they were alive and well, and Jesus knew they needed to know the truth. They were dead to their mission in Jesus Christ. There were some among them that were in a coma, to whom He said, “WAKE UP!” Sardis’s past was one of luxury, but Sardis was destined to become an obscure village with extensive ruins. Sardis was a city on a mountain surrounded with steep cliffs. The topography of the city was thought to be impregnable to its enemies. With only one narrow entrance into the city, Sardis was so sure they were protected, they became arrogant and complacent while refusing to protect the entrance to their city. They went about their daily lives and gave no thought to the enemy that lurked at their gate. They had been attacked and conquered twice to no avail. They refused to heed the warning and made no significant changes to security. The Church of Jesus Christ was operating with the same worldview. The Church in Sardis upheld a stellar reputation in the community. Their programs were well received; they probably had activities for every age group. They certainly were heavily involved in the community for their reputation was one of being an ALIVE organization.

But they had lost their purpose and their message, and Jesus said… YOU ARE DEAD! Sardis escaped their community’s criticism because they had taken on their habits. They fit in, and in so doing, broke the first of God’s Commandments, “You shall have no other Gods before Me.” Exodus 20:3. We know this because the idolatrous worship of one Cybele, the mothergoddess, demanded that her subjects maintain strict physical cleanliness, approaching her only in gleaming white robes.

However, her worship services were sensual in nature and morally debased. Her followers engaged in sexual immorality and dark celebrations. Jesus addressed HIS congregation by calling attention to their Spiritual Clothing. They were stained with friendship with the world. The Church of Sardis had mingled their worship of the One True God with idolatry. They were accepted by the world but rejected by their Savior on whose name their church was built. They were dead; the Life of the Living Lord Jesus was not in their midst. The heart of the church did not beat for Him. Jesus said, there were still a few in Sardis who were not stained by the world. They, He said, were worthy and would walk with Him in White. And to those in His church who are in the world’s coma, He said, “WAKE UP!” Strengthen yourselves…Remember what You received from ME and REPENT. COME BACK TO ME! The Mercy and Grace of God in Jesus Christ is an incredible gift, but it does not permit us to abuse His Grace by adopting the world’s way, which always conflicts with God’s Sprit. Jesus said to HIS BODY (His Church), “Whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. Luke 9:24 Like Sardis, the City on the Hill, the Church of Jesus Christ will either shine in the present darkness, or it will, like Sardis, plummet into obscurity because the Light of the Life of Jesus has gone out. Some of the most disturbing words in this letter to His Body in Sardis are the words, “And I will never blot out his name from the Book of Life, but I will confess his name before My Father and His angels. He who has ears that can hear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” I have heard sermons preached on this portion of scripture; some say it does not say what it says, some say it does, and some totally ignore it. I am going to take it at face-value. God’s Book of Life is mentioned in scriptures from Exodus to Revelation. The fact is that it is a real heavenly book, held by The God of the Universe. He either writes our name in it or He does not. If you believe the Bible, this fact is undisputable. Jesus said to His disciples that they should rejoice that their names are recorded in this heavenly book.

[Luke 10:20]. The Lord’s Book of Life is the Book of Eternal Life which is open only to those who enter through the Life of Jesus Christ. HE IS THE ONLY SOURCE OF ETERNAL LIFE. “And, Jesus said, “everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.” John 11:26. His Message was not only for one assembly in ancient Turkey; His Words have been preserved through the centuries for all those who claim HIS NAMEl He gave His Life for us so we could partake of eternal, “forever life” found in Him alone. His voice is calling to each of us no matter where we are in our Spiritual Life. He wants us to WAKE UP and not be found lacking at His coming. He stands at the door and knocks. His warning may seem ominous, but there is hope in His warning – if we heed it.

Cordale 6/15/21 Whitfield Wins Championship on Forged in Fire Episode

The family of Gerald Wishard would like to extend our gratitude to the kindness of the communities of Dial and Honey Grove. By Connie Estes Cordale Whitfield, of Telephone, Texas, won a $10,000 cash prize and the title of Champion for his talent in knife building on the History Channel’s show Forged in Fire.

The first round of competition required Cordale and his competitors to build a blade from the contents of a mystery crate within a three-hour timeframe. Inside the crate were some pipe wrenches. Cordale forged an 18-inch blade with the top jaw and made it to the second round. He was advanced to the second round.

In the second round, they were challenged to put a handle on their blade in a two-hour timeframe using the crate leftovers.

When finished, the blades were tested in a moose antler chop and a sugar cane slice. Cordale moved on from that phase of the competition, as well.

After being advanced again, Cordale and his final competitor were sent home to their forges. They were given four days to recreate a medieval sword.

In the final round of competition, Cordale had created the winning sword.

With all the work he has done making knives and other metal projects, Cordale proved to be an outstanding craftsman. He gives lots of credit to his family and friends for supporting him and his work.

He is the son of Theron Whitfield & Constance Byrd Whitfield.

states a truth that we are wise to heed, “we number our years, but it is wiser to number our days for we live one day at a time.”

Someone else has written, “Because time flies, we ought to prize it highly, guard it carefully, enjoy it fully, use it wisely, pray over it faithfully, and give thanks for it continually.” We must all learn to “live one day at a time”.

With this article I complete eight years of writing for the “Leader”. My first issue was dated July 2, 2013.

The topic for that week was “Thanksgiving More Than a Day.” Each one has been a day that God has made. My prayer is that we have used each one to His honor and glory.

Discussion, consideration and action to select the Insurance Plan Option through the Texas Association of Counties Health and Employee Benefits Pool for the 2021/2022 fiscal year - County Judge for County Auditor.

Judge Moore recommended to not change the plan for the 2021/2022 fiscal year.

Commissioner Magness made the motion, Commissioner Lackey provided the 2nd and the motion passed.

Discussion, consideration and action to approve payment of bills – County Judge. Motions made and passed as approved.

Discussion and presentation by Architexas, HDR Architecture and Cost Estimator regarding the Fannin County Justice Center – County Judge for Purchasing Agent.

Several representatives from Architexas made an extensive presentation to discuss the options as to the new Justice Center size, floor plans and layout. Options for the number of levels, parking and location. the hour long presentation presented information that is too lengthy to include in this report. The estimated total cost presented from Architexas for a new Justice Center was $29,332,000.00.

After this presentation the Commissioners went into Executive Session regarding this specific Agenda item.

EXECUTIVE SESSION: Consultation with Attorney - a closed meeting will be held pursuant to Section 551.0725 of the Government Code for deliberation regarding contract negotiations where deliberation in an open meeting would have a detrimental effect on the County’s interests with a third party – regarding Justice Center contracts–

County Judge.

Before leaving for the Executive Session Judge Moore indicated that these discussions for the new Justice Center are open, in the Commissioners Court meetings and transparent for the citizens by design, for them to know the processes that are taking place and public input will be needed and appreciated.

3. Discussion, consideration and action to approve and sign the Notice of Intention Resolution for the proposed Justice Center with Samco Capital – County Judge.

After a presentation by Samco Capital there was an agreement between Judge Moore and 5/26/20 all the Commissioners that the total cost presented by Architexas for a new Justice Center was much larger than anticipated. (See agenda #21) So much so that a motion was made by Commissioner Magness and a 2nd by Commissioner Lane to NOT

Discussion, consideration and action regarding Development Permitting – County Judge for Development Services Director. Di Hopkins, Director of Development Servies asked the Commissioners to approve a Permit for Development for Fannin County. Individuals are currently building in a flood plane or in a buffer zone without knowing they did so.

This results in what can be very expensive after cost for the home owner. Di indicated that this permit is essential for new developments that are in the planning stages or could be already underway, they could be in a flood plane or a buffer zone unaware. There was intensive discussion on this agenda item, the growth anticipated and already happening in Fannin County results in change that requires lengthy, healthy discussion and exchange of ideas. Di Hopkins made her case and each Commissioner as well as Judge Moore gave effective and passionate input from their point of view. In the end a motion was made by Commissioner Lane, second made by Commissioner Magness and the motion passed 3 for, 2 against. This Development Permit goes into effect immediately. Di Hopkins will begin the process of communicating this to all the affected entities. The Leader will have a press release form Di in this edition explaining the changes and those who may be affected. Please see page___ for important information regarding this new permit and the guidelines.

15. Discussion, consideration and action to approve renewal of the Lake Fannin Facilities Rental Agreement for 07/02/2021 to 07/01/2022 – County Judge. The rental fee for the lodge stayed the same however a proposal to increase the fee charged for rentals over 4 hours to $40.00 per hour was approved by the Commissioners.

Discussion, consideration and action to appoint member to the Texoma Council of Governments Governing Board – County Judge. Judge Moore asked Commissioner Lane to serve on this board, she agreed and the motion was approved.

Discussion, consideration and action to approve and send letters to Bryco Bryant Construction and their bonding company, Endurance American Insurance Company, regarding restoration work on the Fannin County Courthouse – County Judge.

This agenda item was tabled for 2 weeks.

Discussion, consideration and action to approve and send letter to Turner Construction regarding firm fabrication prices – County Judge.

Commissioner Lackey made a motion, Commissioner Lane

approve this agenda #3. The motion passed.

The cost associated with a new Justice Center was more than double of what the Commissioners anticipated and adding a tax increase at the level required to cover the increased cost was not an option the Commissioners wanted to burden the taxpayers of Fannin County with.

9. Discussion, consideration and action regarding Courthouse Restoration – County Judge. Judge Moore reported that work continues on the exterior including installing shingles on the roof, windows being installed in the first floor and duct work continuing in the interior.

Presentation of Distinguished Service Award to the Fannin County Historical Commission – County Judge. The Fannin County Historical Commission received the Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Historical Commission “ In Recognition Of Its Active And Well Balanced Preservation Program” 11. Discussion regarding EMS monthly report for May 2021 – County Judge for Scott Ridling. There were 377 runs reported with volume returning to normal. July 6th there will be Covid -19 vaccinations available at the Fannin County Multi-Purpose Complex, access the DSHS website for more information and to sign up for a specific time. https://getthevaccine. dshs.texas.gov/s/ A new ambulance was ordered and is due February-March of 2022.

Subdivision vs. Safety Dear Editor,

I am a citizen of Trenton and I love my town. Growth and changes are coming, and I am not against it, but am concerned about the placement of growth and the way it will affect Trenton’s future.

The current concentration of growth is a 23-acre tract in the middle of town between the railroad tracks and Saunders Street. For many years, this area was used for crops and cattle. The presentation includes analysis of body camera footage where use of force was applied, various law enforcement contact scenarios, and a review of a case study. The class is identified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) as course number 77023.

Preventing abuse of this authority is necessary to the health of our nation’s democracy,” said Dallas FBI Special Agent in Charge Matthew DeSarno. “Training is critical to educating our law enforcement population to recognize and prevent potential civil rights violations.

We applaud Grayson College’s commitment to proactively offer today’s training to its recruits and area law enforcement, and thank them for their continued partnership.”

MILLIE RUTH KELLEY Funeral Services for Millie Ruth Kelley, age 99, of Bonham, Texas were held at 2:00 p.m.

Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Wise Funeral Home Chapel.

Dana Coker officiated with Liz Talbert assisting. Burial followed at Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham, Texas. Millie passed away Wednesday morning, June 23, 2021, at The Woodmoore Assisted Living in Bonham, Texas.

Millie was born in Savoy, Texas to Dell and Myrtle Kelley on October 12, 1921. Millie was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Mary and Dora, and many cousins and friends.

Millie was employed by General Telephone Company for over 45 years. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her sisters and after they passed, Millie enjoyed traveling with her special friend, Paula Cranfill. Millie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bonham for numerous years.

She was also a member of the Builder’s Sunday school class.

Millie also served on many committees over the years. Millie was a member of a quilting club, Young at Heart at TMC hospital Bonham and helped begin the Kool Lunch Program.

Millie loved to mow her own yard and mowed until she was in her 90s. She also enjoyed her flowers and plants. Millie loved her family, and she loved the holidays. She was a tough and sassy lady with some stubbornness. Millie reminded us of the Duracell bunny because she never slowed down. She contributed walking and exercise to her longevity. Millie also said it was a blessing and a curse to out live your family and friends.

We would like to thank Hollee Scott and TMC Home Healthcare, Jessica Shannon and Hospice Plus, and the staff at the Woodmoore Assisted Living for all the loving care shown to Millie and her caregivers. Also, a special thank you to Paula Cranfill for always calling to check on Millie and coming to visit her. And a big special thanks to Erma for being an angel and dedicated caregiver.

Millie is survived by Joann Hamilton, Jennifer and Robert Aguirre, Ashleigh and Henry Tobolka, Zach Weeks, Ally Weeks, Patrick and Lou Ann Warren and many other cousins.

Memorials can be made to Hospice Plus and Fannin County Children’s Center in lieu of flowers.

Bonham- Opal Marie (Fulfer) O’Hara, age 83, of Bonham, TX was born on May 26, 1938, in Honey Grove, TX to James Walter and Vera Bertha (Littrell) Fulfer. She joined our heavenly on Monday, June 21, 2021, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Marie married Thomas “Tom” O’Hara on April 13, 1957, in Ft. Worth, TX; they were married for 48 years before he preceded her in death on April 26, 2004.

She was a nurse’s aide at Seven Oaks Nursing Home. Marie was hardworking, she enjoyed crafts, sewing, and reading books in her spear time. She loved her children and grandchildren. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister, aunt, wife, and friend.

Mr. Gilbreath was born on September 8, 1944, in Bonham, Texas, the son of Atwell Earl Gilbreath and Mary Alta Denney Gilbreath. He was a 1963 graduate of Windom High School and he married Paula Odom on January 27, 1984, in Durant, Oklahoma. He was employed at Southwest Pump Company, Lonestar Gas, and TXU Oncor in Bonham for many years. Mr. Gilbreath was an avid knife maker and loved to fish and metal detect.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Don Gilbreath in 1984 and his sister, Earlene Wix in 2002 and his nephew Steve Gilbreath in 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Paula Gilbreath of Windom, daughters, Regina Zornes of South Point, Ohio and LeeAnn Johnson and her husband Justin (Mr. Gilbreath considered him more of a son than a son-in-law) of Forney, Texas and stepson, Scott Davis of Windom; grandchildren, Ali Zornes and her husband Abraham Ezeagabu, Abbi Zornes, Brady Johnson, Ashley Davis and Cody Davis.

Honorary Pallbearers were Ray Lakey, Mike Lindsey, Jimmy Kirkpatrick, Mark Rich, Ed Crump, Bobby Crutcher, Ron Payne, Kris Crutcher, and Ronnie Packard.

James was called to his eternal home on June 21, 2021.

James was born on March 21, 1938 in Mabank, Texas, the son of Riley Charles Swanson and Trudie Awn Monds Swanson.

He was the third of six children.

James and his siblings were all musically gifted and often enjoyed singing and playing guitar together. One of James’ fondest memories was when they had an opportunity to sing and play on the radio. James took his musical talent with him when he joined the United States Air Force in 1956. He would entertain his fellow troops, regularly singing popular Elvis

The workshop will be held at the Derrell Hall Education Center, 2505 N Center Street in Bonham, TX. A virtual attendance option will also be available for those unable to attend in-person. The event will be presented by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board in cooperation with North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD).

“This workshop is designed to help watershed residents learn about their water resources and how they may become involved in local watershed protection and management activities,” said Michael Kuitu, AgriLife Extension program specialist and coordinator for the Texas Watershed Steward program, College Station.

“The workshop is free and open to anyone interested in improving water quality in the region.”

James spent his life giving to others. He never spoke a bad word about anyone, and always made time to listen to others while only speaking about himself when asked. He was a talented artist, musician, and avid reader with an incredible uplifting sense of humor and positive energy that everyone could feel in his presence. James faithfully served his wife, children, family, and community until the age of 83. He will surely be missed in the hearts and minds of all those who loved him.

“Development of a nonregulatory watershed protection plan for Bois d’Arc Lake will soon begin, and involvement by local citizens is crucial during this process,” said David Cowan, NTMWD Watershed Manager. “It’s important that we take proactive measures, which can only be successful with public involvement, to protect the quality and integrity of the waters in Bois d’Arc Lake.”

Attendees of the workshop will receive a copy of the Texas Watershed Steward Handbook and are eligible to earn a certificate of completion.

The Texas Watershed Steward program offers continuing education for multiple professional disciplines.

However, the quantity of continuing education offered does vary for select disciplines, depending on whether one attends in-person or virtually.

For those who attend in-person, four hours of continuing education is offered for the following professional disciplines: soil and water management for certified crop advisers;

professional engineers; AICP certified planners (4 CM & 1.5 law); certified teachers; professional geoscientists; certified landscape architects; certified floodplain managers; and each of the following Texas Commission on Environmental Quality occupational licensees: wastewater system operators, public water system operators, on-site sewage facility installers, and landscape irrigators. In addition, three general continuing education units are offered to inperson attendees for Texas Department of Agriculture pesticide license holders, and two credits are offered for nutrient management specialists.

Every year I see owners in despair after their horses have rubbed out manes and long pretty tails. These horses are allergic or have a sensitivity to the bites.

Horses will rub fences, trees and feeders. They lose hair on their face, neck, shoulders and chest, often resulting in raw, oozing skin. The hair loss will resemble a skin fungus, but does not respond when treated with anti-fungal shampoos. Treatment for most allergic horses is a cortisone shot and anti-itch oral medication, along with the preventative suggestions below.

1. Apply repellant oils and

sprays to discourage the biting. Avon skin so soft, applied at a 1/3 Avon to 2/3 water ratio repels the gnats and conditions the skin.

Sprays containing DEET work best for the mane and tail. Walmart and Amazon sell sprays that contain DEET. Natural sprays with citronella, Equiderma natural Spray, and Wipe (an oil based Farnam product) also work.

Sprays with permethrin or pyrethrin are not very effective. The insects bite aggressively at dawn (6am-7am) and dusk. It is very important to apply the repellent at these times, continuing until the insects are killed by the next seasonal frost.

2. Stall your horse from sunset to 8 am. This is when the most bites occur. High velocity stall fans move a lot of air and can also prevent bites, as well as cool your horse.

3. Use a mesh sheet with a belly band on pastured horses to help prevent insect bites.

Horse flies If you have ever been bitten by a big black horse fly? It REALLY hurts! No repellent works well against them, but the same oil-based gnat repellents do help. Horse flies bite during the day, but are most vicious at dusk. They must get their last bloodmeal just before night to live another day.

Fly sheets and putting your horse inside (preferably with a fan) before sunset works the best. This absolutely provides the most protection/relief for your horse.

Use the same oil-based gnat repellents listed above. No spray or wipe works well against horse flies, but they do help.

Set up fly traps. Amazon sells Horse fly Sticky Balls and swinging cone traps that help reduce horse fly numbers. Be sure to follow the instructions when hanging these products. They have height requirements, and must have access to sun and wind to work.

Bot flies This bee looking fly lays the yellow eggs on your horse’s hair, most often on the legs.

They don’t sting or bite as many people think, but they will drive your horse crazy.

Fly sprays don’t discourage these pests because they don’t land on your horse. The eggs they deposit on the hair, if ingested by your horse, will become bot larvae. Tools can be purchased to remove the eggs, or a pumice stone will do the job.

Farm Service Agency Now Accepting Nominations for County Committee Members COLLEGE STATION, TX, June 22, 2021 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) began accepting nominations for county committee members on June 15. Elections will occur in certain Local Administrative Areas (LAA) for these members who make important decisions about how federal farm programs are administered locally.

All nomination forms for the 2021 election must be postmarked or received in the local FSA office by Aug. 2, 2021. “We need enthusiastic, diverse leaders to serve other agricultural producers locally on FSA County Committees,” said Eddie Trevino Acting State Executive Director for FSA in Texas. “Now’s your time to step up and truly make an impact on how federal programs are administered at the local level to reach all producers fairly and equitably.”

Trevino said agricultural producers who participate or cooperate in a USDA program, and reside in the LAA that is up for election this year, may be nominated for candidacy for the county committee.

A cooperating producer is someone who has provided information about their farming or ranching operation to FSA, even if they have not applied or received program benefits. Individuals may nominate themselves or others and qualifying organizations may also nominate candidates.

USDA encourages minority producers, women and beginning farmers or ranchers to nominate, vote, and hold office. Nationwide, more than 7,700 dedicated members of the agricultural community serving on FSA county committees. The committees are made up of three to 11 members who serve three-year terms.

Producers serving on FSA county committees play a critical role in the day-to-day operations of the agency. Committee members are vital to how FSA carries out disaster programs, as well as conservation, commodity and price support programs, county office employment and other agricultural issues. LAAs are elective areas for FSA committees in a single county or multicounty jurisdiction. This may include LAAs that are focused on an urban or suburban area.

They should check with their local USDA Service Center to see if their LAA is up for election this year. To be considered, a producer must be registered and sign an FSA-669A nomination

Meanwhile, senior Brayden Vaught’s first-team selection as a pitcher led a trio of Class 1A Dodd City players on the THSBCA 2A all-state team for 2021.

A couple of Dodd City middle infielders made the second team:

In June, Reaves played in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association allstar game at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock and joined Bonham teammates Brant Stuber and Trystan Mallory and Sam Rayburn’s Weston Whiteside with a selection to play in the North Texas Coaches Association all-star game at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Second-team selections from Bonham were senior Tuck Frazier at first base and senior Ayden Leatherwood as an outfielder.

Dodd City tied for second place in the Class 1A University Interscholastic League Lone Star Cup standings for the 2020-21 school year.

The school totaled 60 points, sharing the No. 2 spot with D’Hanis -- against whom the Lady Hornets on June 2 triumphed, 8-4, to win their first State softball title in their first attempt.

The softball championship capped an athletic year for Dodd City which also included: its first trip to the volleyball regional finals since 2001, first girls basketball championship (with a 32-0 record), boys basketball area finalist, baseball regional finalist and district champion and individual State qualifiers in girls cross country, girls track and boys tennis.

Tanner Reaves and Darian Yarborough each garnered a District 11-3A baseball superlative in the 2021 awards.

Reaves, a Grayson College baseball signee, claimed the defensive most valuable player award for Bonham, which with a bi-district advance made its ninth postseason trip in the last 10 completed seasons.

Darian Yarborough garnered the freshman of the year award for Bonham, which advanced via the fourth and final district postseason berth at 9-5 -- just two games out of a three-way tie atop of 11-3A which included State semifinalist Gunter.

1A Lone Star Cup winner, after the awards -- bestowed to the points leader in each of the UIL’s six classifications -- were not distributed for the 2019-20 school year due to the academic and athletic period’s truncation due to COVID-19 concerns in mid March of 2020.

Even during the abridged 2019-20 school year, Dodd City scored 22 points and tied for 17th in the Lone Star Cup 1A Top 25 standings.

In 2019, Dodd City tied for third with 54 points in the last full academic and athletic year of competition.

Schools earn points for its “performance in district and state championships,” per the UIL website. The top school per classification garners a Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship.

Points may be garnered in the following categories: Team Tennis, Cross Country,

Marching Band, Volleyball, Robotics BEST, Football, Congress, Spirit, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Mariachi, Film, Basketball, Robotics FIRST, Soccer, Academics, One-Act Play, Theatrical Design, Track & Field, Golf, Tennis, Softball, Baseball.

Texas, in fact, was the first state to recognize the holiday in 1980.

Dale recounted celebrating Juneteenth in years past. He talked about how things have changed in his lifetime. He recalled that as he was growing up in Bonham, when buying shoes or clothes, he had to know what size he needed, because he would never be allowed to try them on at a store.

Dale later went to college, served in the military and worked at various jobs before he was appointed in 1993 by Judge Doyle to serve as the Justice of the Peace, Pct 1.

Dale was the first black person to ever hold an elected office in Fannin County. He served for 21 years and had an office on the second floor of the courthouse where he used to stop for a drink of water on the way to school. His advice for everyone was to apply yourself, have faith in God and treat everyone right. Dale

Audrey Rayford led the crowd in singing “Lift Every Voice.” She also recounted the history of Juneteenth. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to free all enslaved persons on September 22, 1862 and it became effective on January 1, 1863. However, it was not until more than two and a half years later when General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865, that enslaved persons in Texas were freed.

Gabi Henson spoke about what Juneteenth means to her. She later joined Teagan LaVergne in sharing a beautiful liturgical dance with the audience.

Brookshire’s and WalMart provided hot dogs, hot links, chips and cookies for the event. TXB (formerly Kwik Chek) and McCraw Oil provided bottled water. Many of the attendees brought food to share too.

The event was organized

by Our Community Matters Council. This group was started after the peaceful protest march in June 2020.

This council has organized an MLK art and essay contests and a community discussion with law enforcement. The council also has created a Facebook page named “Our Community Matters” which can be found at https://www. facebook.com/fanninocmc.
