CLAYTON FAMILY REUNION The descendants of William Marcus Clayton (1869-1946) will hold their first family reunion on June 29, 2019, at Bonham State Park, just SE of Bonham, in Fannin County. A Special Day for Father

reminders of many past ones. Today, as I near the century mark in my age, I think back to many precious memories that I have of my dad.

My first memory finds dad serving a double role.

1.The role of being a father.

2.The assuming of household responsibilities due to the early death of my mother. (2 children; 5 weeks old and 2 years of age.)

I am grateful that, in God’s goodness, he left my dad to help with the family.

He was called out of this life in 1985.

It is my distinct honor to thank God for blessing our family through him.

It’s time to celebrate our Independence Day! I know most of you have your favorite homemade ice cream recipe, but this one is especially rich and is just perfect for your July 4th cookout. I do hope you have a happy and safe July 4th!

PRIZE WINNING VANILLA ICE CREAM 2 cans sweetened condensed milk 6 eggs 2 cups sugar 1 T. vanilla 1 pt. heavy cream 2 qts. or more of half and half Mix all together and freeze in ice cream freezer.

Add other flavors, fruit, nuts, cookies, etc., if desired. Ice cream can be made a day, or a few days ahead, if necessary. The half and half and cream will keep it from having an icy texture in the deep freeze. The dasher should be removed and it can be stored in the container it was made in or place in an air tight container. For semi-rich vanilla, use 1 can condensed milk, 1 ½ cups sugar and whole milk instead of half and half, along with other ingredients.

7 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve the Fannin County Clerk’s Archive Plan per LGC 118.025 for budget year 2019-2020 – County Judge for County Clerk – Tammy Biggar explained that this is a continuation of digitalizing records for land, marriages, vitals, etc. Commissioner Magness made a motion to approve. Commissioner Lackey seconded. Motion carried.

8 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve the Fannin County District Court’s Records Archive Plan per GC 51.305 for budget year 2019-2020 – County Judge for District Clerk – Nancy Young explained that this is a continuation of the

plan that they have had for the past 4-5 years. The fees are dedicated funds just for digitalizing records. Commissioner Whitlock made a motion to approve. Commissioner Self seconded. Motion carried.

9 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve a one-time severance to remove one acre from a 46.257-acre tract in Trenton – Commissioner Precinct 2 – Commissioner Self stated that this land is on CR 4918.

Commissioner Self made a motion to approve. Commissioner Whitlock seconded.

10 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve the Fannin County Commissioners’ Annual Road Reports – County Judge – Each Commissioner gave their 2019 Road Report as follows: • Commissioner Whitlock of Precinct 1 – Commissioner Whitlock said that this has been a tough year. The roads are poor. Culverts and bridges are in good condition with the exception of one on CR 1450, which needs to be replaced as soon as it dries up. Precinct 1 has 192.7 miles of road to maintain, 24 bridges, 81 road culverts and 19,088 driveway culverts. The amount of money needed to maintain Precinct 1 roads for the next fiscal year is $1,000,000. This is to get things back in shape.

There are several road signs missing due to theft and several to be replaced.

There should not be any new roads to open. Regarding improvements necessary to place roads in good condition; “There are breakdowns every day and there is a lot of necessary work needed to get the roads back in good condition, and the estimated cost would be $1,000,000.”

• Commissioner Self of Precinct 2 – Commissioner Self said that there are 3,065 culverts in fair to good condition, with storm debris in some of them. There are 59 bridges with 58 of them open to traffic at this time. There is 1 bridge closed until TXDOT rebuilds it within the next year on CR 5025. There are 226.21 miles of road open to traffic in Precinct 1. Dirt roads are seasonal. There is 191.55 miles of gravel roads, 27.16 miles of dirt roads, 3.02 miles of oil road and 4.47 miles of chip seal road. The amount of money necessary for maintenance of roads for the next fiscal year is $800,000 (that is to maintain at the same level, not upgrade). The number of traffic control devices defaced or torn down is 4 stop signs and 25 plus stolen or defaced road signs.

One road will be up for inspection, Cheyenne Trail.

Regarding necessary improvements to place roads in good condition: there are 5 bridges to be replaced in the 2019/2020 budget year.

Those bridges are at CR 5025, CR 5060, CR 4255, CR 4920 and CR 3810. The estimated cost of each is $150,000. This work is due

Replacing old culverts is an ongoing process and they are putting in many new culverts for landowners. The plans are to oil as many roads as they can afford to. Having traffic control devices defaced or torn down is an ever present occurrence. There are no new roads to be opened at this time. There are a number of roads that will need improvements because of construction traffic with the new lake and the pipeline. There are at least 11 roads that will be affected by this right now, but that could increase once specific routes are determined when they start hauling the pipe. Roads that will need improvement due to construction traffic are: CR 2730 (plan to oil this road), CR 2980 (new bridge under construction), CR 2985 (currently building new road), CR 2750 (new bridge in the near future on Coffee Mill Creek), CR 2716 (2.7 miles of improvement due to construction traffic), CR 2765 (3.9 miles of improvement), CR 2610 (2 new bridges under construction), CR 2680 (new bridge under construction), CR 2615 (4.1 miles of improvements), CR 2625 (2.2 miles of improvements) and CR 2725 ( 1.2 miles of improvements).

• Commissioner Lackey of Precinct 4 stated the he maintains 197.2 miles of road. 123 miles of that is gravel roads, 19 are oiled roads, 12 are chip seal and 39 are dirt. Regarding the condition of each road, culvert and bridge in Precinct 4, his report reads that all roads are in good condition and that replacing old culverts is an ongoing process. They put in many new culverts for landowners and the plans are to oil as many roads as they can afford to do. The last rain was pretty hard on them and they lost a couple of culverts. The amount of money necessary to maintain roads and culverts this next fiscal year is $710,000. There are 8 stop signs missing and 16 road signs in the process of being replaced because they are not in compliance with the mandated size.

Regarding improvements necessary to place precinct roads in good condition, there are 4 wooden bridges that will be replaced with concrete due to the new lake going in (CR 2610, CR 2900, CR 2680 and a TXDOT bridge on CR 2998).

11 Discussion, Consideration and Action to appoint a representative to the Red River Groundwater Conservation District whose term will expire on August 31, 2023 – County Judge – Commissioner Magness made a motion to reappoint Mr. Harold Latham as the representative from Fannin County to the Red River Ground Water Conservation District. Commissioner Whitlock seconded. Motion carried. This term will expire August 31, 2023.

• Commissioner Magness said, “There is a lot of talk going around the county, some on Facebook and some in the paper and I think the best thing to do is to just let it die. If anyone has an issue with anything I do, I am more than willing to sit down with anyone at any time. I do not see any sense in going behind someone’s back, let’s meet face to face. I do not see any sense in putting it out there for public opinion and getting someone riled up.

We all sit up here trying to do a good job, working for the public. We are not up here for our own personal gain. It is slow, but if you look at the east side, it is coming off. Frontier is satisfied with the progress so far. On June 11, 2019 a large and excited crowd gathered at the north side of the courthouse to celebrate the dedication of our soon to be restored courthouse. We all proudly watched as the shovels turned and were amazed at what has been accomplished. Now we anxiously await the completion of this magnificent structure.

As I stood there and glanced over my shoulder, I could see another building with great historical significance for Fannin County that has stood there since 1886.

Oh, what a shame that this building (known as Mary’s boutique) was not given thoughtful consideration for our “NEW” courthouse annex. It is only 50 steps away from the courthouse, has over 15,000 square feet and the owner wanted to do something to give back to Fannin County—so, he made what most would consider a “no brainer” offer that would not burden the taxpayers with any additional debt.

The Commissioners rejected his offer and have now appointed a study group to evaluate our counties needs for each department and make recommendations on locations as well as cost estimates. I applaud them for taking action but this process will take many months, and professionals should be hired. Go back and read Larry Waldrop’s thoughtful article in the Fannin County Leader (May 28, 2019, page 21) addressing this issue. This plan-

Fannin County Musician Writes Book about Surviving Murder on Music Row

By Sandy Hood Sammy Sadler wrote a book that was released on May 21, 2019. It took over 10 years for him to write the book. The book, “A Hit with a Bullet: A True Story of Corruption, Greed, and the Real Murder on Music Row,” is a true crime story that reveals the way the music industry works, chart rigging and

payola. Sammy shares with me his perseverance, and finding God in the midst of it all.

Sammy Sadler was raised in Bonham, Texas and graduated from Leonard High School. He got a record deal right out of high school and moved to Nashville. He was on his 6th single, “Tell it Like it is” when a senseless crime took place that would forever change his life. “Tell it Like it is” was a fast rising single on the charts and Sammy was working on his first album when he was shot and left for dead. Sammy stated, “I was just a country boy from Texas who came to be a country singer and leave my mark on Nashville, but Nashville left its mark on me.”

On the night of Thursday, March 9, 1989 Sammy met with a friend of his, Kevin Hughes, who worked for Cash Box Magazine in Nashville. Kevin was a chart director and was in charge of compiling playlist reports and ranking records from

1-100, according to their popularity. A high position on the charts could be a great help for an inspiring musician or music group.

Sammy and Kevin went to dinner and then Evergreen Records. When leaving Evergreen Records, Sammy was shot and left for dead and Kevin was murdered.

Sammy survived the shooting despite a bullet severing a major artery in his arm that required several surgeries to repair. Law enforcement had several theories as they worked to solve this crime, including Sammy being a suspect. Sammy remained under suspicion until the murder was solved 13 years later. Unfortunately, Sammy’s career was dead at this point too. Sammy stated that he and Kevin were close friends and he dislikes that Kevin’s family were made to believe that he was somehow involved in the murder.

Kevin’s unsolved murder was aired on Unsolved Mysteries, Cold Case Files, Nancy Grace and Fatal Encounters. The case was cold until 2002 when evidence pointed to an elaborate, illegal music-promotion scheme that Kevin refused to participate in. Kevin could not be paid to move songs up the charts. Richard D’ Antonio was arrested, charged and convicted of First-Degree Murder of Kevin and Assault with the Intent to Commit Second Degree Murder of Sammy.

In an interview with Sammy, he said, “I wrote the book for Kevin and I will be his voice. He died standing up and being honest, but he did not die in vain. My message to future musicians is to check out who they are dealing with and make sure they are reputable people.

There is still payola in Nashville.” Sammy went on to talk about how the general public does not understand what goes on in the music business and how careers are made. He said that talent has very little to do with music success and that it is all about money and politics, even today.

After Kevin’s murder, Sammy came back to his roots in Fannin County to recuperate. He came back to Bonham and worked at his father’s business. It was a very tough time for him.

“It was 7 seconds that

changed my entire life,” said Sammy. Not only was he facing his medical issues, he was also dealing with the loss of a close friend and being treated like a suspect for several years. Sammie still carries the bullet in his body today, along with a very long scar on his arm and shoulder. He had to have 100 staples in his arm and an artery replaced. He still cannot play his guitar the way he would like because of severed nerves. He was 21 years old when this happened to him and explained how the last 30 years of his life have been rough.

Through it all, he came to know Jesus and many times through our conversation, he gave God the credit for bringing him to where he is today. He explained, “I am thankful God sustained me and brought me through this.

When this happened, I had not been saved yet and I am not sure Kevin was a Christian. I feel like if I would have died that night, I might have gone to hell.” “I’m thankful he saved my life and now I’m saved. I look back on my life and know He has been carrying me.”

Sammy may have taken some time to recoup after such a tragic event, but he has never really left the music business. For years he suffered from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) without even knowing what it was. He is excited about an album he has been working on that will be out soon named; “1989.” This is the year that the 7 second tragedy happened.

The students were selected to visit the nation’s capital on an allexpense paid trip for winning an annual essay contest put on by the Texas Electric Cooperatives. They joined a group of 150 winning students from across the state of Texas on a “Government-in-Action Youth Tour.”

“I was pleased that this year’s essay contest winners from the 4th District of Texas were able to stop by my Washington office during their visit to our nation’s capital,” Ratcliffe said.

“Their elevated interest in government and politics at such a young age is truly inspiring.

I’m grateful we have so many Northeast Texans represented as winners in this prestigious state-

wide competition.”

Among the first timers welcomed to Roundtable #12 were Cindy Fotenberry, Business Services Facilitator at the Fannin County Workforce Center, Brandt Beland, Right Pointe’s new Plant Manager on his fourth day on the job here in Bonham, Ramiro Trevino and Gregorio Medina, the dynamic management

team behind the on-going relocation & expansion of Dairy Manufacturing from Prosper to Bonham.

First timer Fannin County Judge Randy Moore shared an update on exterior courthouse restoration activities and the impending transfer of Lake Fannin and assorted USDA properties in Fannin County to the County. Attendees heard a project update specially prepared for them by NTMWD staff about Bois D’Arc Lake construction.

City Manager Sean Pate was joined by Brad Nichols, Bonham HR Manager who was attending his first Mfgs’ Roundtable as he helped welcome Bonham High School alum & former baseball teammate Dr. Jeremy McMillen, Ph.D., President of Grayson College.

As workforce and the tight industrial labor market continues to be a challenge for all area employers Dr.

McMillen and his Grayson College team (Dr. Dava Washburn, Kim Williams and Djuna Forrester) all addressed aspects of how Grayson College plays a pivotal role as a local resource in training current and future workforce members!

In a further illustration of just how challenging the TEXOMA workforce is Clayton Bonham’s long time facility plant manager Kip Thrush introduced new ‘Team Member Experience Manager’ and Roundtable first timer Terese Kane as an innovative approach Clayton has established in an effort to enhance productivity, experience and recruitment.

As an investment in ‘Future Workforce’ BEDCO announced a $300 contribution to the Bonham Public Library’s summer reading program.

The BEDCO board was represented by Board President Emily Porter and Executive Director of Economic Development Steve Filipowicz, Library Director John Hayden represented the Bonham Public Library.

By Sandy Hood Out in the middle of beautiful farm land in Telephone, Robert Stevenson shoots his mother in the hand and his stepfather in the chin. The reason why is unknown at this time. At about 10:30am on Tuesday, June 18th, when Robert, with shot gun in hand, fires at the couple as they were riding their tractor to his property. After

being shot, the mother somehow messaged the Sheriff’s Office for help.

Deputies drove to the home at 11218 FM 273 in Telephone and were met at the door by Robert who admitted to the shootings.

The home is nestled in trees in the middle of a hay field. The victims; a 76 year old man and a 66 year old woman were transported to TMC in Denison. Robert’s mother underwent sur-

gery for gunshot wounds to her hand and arm and the stepfather underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to his chin. Both are expected to fully recover. Robert Stevenson was arrested and charged on two charges of Aggravated Assault with Deadly Weapon with Serious Bodily Injury. The charge is a felony in the first degree. This case is still under investigation.

Bad Exit Plan During the night of May 14, a Fannin County game warden was alerted of a vehicle pursuit near his residence. The warden joined the pursuit and lent his knowledge of the area backroads to the other officers involved. When the subject entered a road the game warden knew had no exit, he advised officers the chase would be over very soon because the subject was headed toward a new pond that had been excavated recently. As predicted, the subject drove straight into the lake. The warden and other officers greeted the individual as he swam back to shore and safely placed him into custody. The warden then returned home to retrieve his river boat and assist with the recovery of the vehicle from the lake.

Loaner Car Loaded with Optional Equipment In early May, a Nacogdoches County game warden received a call from a car dealership concerning some damage and questionable items found in one of their loaner vehicles that had been impounded by local police. The subject driving the vehicle at the time had been arrested for shoplifting. While inspecting the vehicle, the dealership discovered a bullet hole in the driver side mirror, and deer hair in the trunk, as well as a rangefinder and empty packaging for a spotlight. After reviewing the police offense report, the warden learned a

rifle was also in the vehicle at the time of arrest. The warden interviewed the incarcerated driver, who initially denied any wrongdoing until presented with the evidence against him, and eventually confessed to poaching a deer. Despite having a confession in hand, the warden still couldn’t reconcile the case based on the evidence, particularly the bullet hole in the side mirror. After additional questioning, the subject’s girlfriend admitted shooting the deer with a .22 while her boyfriend held the spotlight. Her first shot had hit the side mirror. The couple then loaded the deer in the trunk and decided to dump it in a nearby pasture.

Numerous cases are pending.

Ejected and Arrested After sunset on May 25 while patrolling for water safety compliance on Lake Conroe, Montgomery County game warden’s observed a couple on a personal watercraft enter a no wake zone at high speed, and lose control while attempting a maneuver.

Both the operator and passenger were ejected. The wardens made contact and immediately noticed signs of intoxication.

An intoxication investigation revealed that the operator was intoxicated, as a breath sample indicated a blood alcohol content of 0.134. The operator was placed under arrest for Boating While Intoxicated.

In May, a Travis County game warden received a call about multiple barges covered in zebra mussels being transported from the Sandy Creek boat ramp. The barge rental company was identified and contacted. The owner admitted that they did not fully clean their barges before transporting them from all the different bodies of water. The warden educated the owner on how to improve his procedures to be in compliance with the law. Multiple commercial citations were issued for transporting zebra mussels.

Just Stand Up Harris County game wardens were patrolling the San Jacinto River when they observed two individuals displaying signs of drowning after falling off floating tubes near a beach swimming area. The wardens tossed life saving devices to the subjects and towed them to shore.

Even though the average depth of the area was three feet the subjects were too scared to try and feel for ground. This same beach last year had four drownings.

One Thing Leads to Another While patrolling Lake Conroe, Montgomery County game wardens made contact with a kayaker who did not have a required life jacket onboard.

The wardens followed the individual back to shore to issue a citation and when the subject provided an identification card they asked who had driven him to the boat ramp. He responded that his wife had driven him to the lake. Turns out the wife did not have a driver’s license either, but did have two active warrants. Consent was obtained to search the vehicle, where a vape cartridge containing THC oil was found in the passenger side door storage compartment. The original subject was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. Wardens later discovered that the subject was out on parole for similar charges. The wife was also arrested for her warrants.

There are many medications that can be used in some situations but not others, and you run a huge risk of making the eye worse if you treat with something you were given at another time for another horse.

Now an eye that is just a little drainy but is still open and comfortable, that can probably wait until the morning. Horses can and do have environmental allergies, which can cause some drainage, and so can clogged tear ducts.

As long as the eye isn’t painful, you’re ok to wait.

Eyelid lacerations are also an emergency and should be seen right away. Horses are in dire need of their eyelids, so if one gets cut, it makes it really easy to get an ulcer along with it because the lid is no longer doing what it’s supposed to.

Texas Crop and Weather Report – June 18, 2019 NORTH: Soil moisture was adequate to surplus across the district. Storms brought half an inch to 4 inches of precipitation. Before the rains, soils had dried enough for producers to harvest wheat. Farmers reported good yields, 30-50 bushels per acre. Croplands were still too wet to access in some places. Late-planted corn was responding well to the extra moisture. Most pastures were in good shape.

Hay producers were able to get in most pastures. Ponds were full. Creeks, ditches and some streets were full or overflowing. Saturation was causing concern in some areas. Cattle were in good condition.

CENTRAL: Temperatures were cooler but returned to normal highs late in the reporting period, reaching the mid-to-upper 90s. Rains of 1-2 inches were reported in some areas while other areas missed additional moisture. Some low-lying areas were underwater. Hay balers were very active but were stalled again by rains.

Producers reported four to five bales per acre. Weeds were a big issue for crop and

Harley Eugene (Gene) Angus (88) passed quietly at his home in Leonard, Texas the morning of June 7, 2019.

Gene saw the world courtesy of the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Merchant Marine from 1951 -1965. He retired from Owens Illinois after 20 years of service.

Gene is survived by Shirley Jean, his wife of 54 years; 1 brother, Ralph Lee Angus; 2 sons, William Farrah (Karen), and Donald Farrah (Diane); 3 daughters, Brenda Snyder, Terri Cummings (Glenn), and Valerie McArthur (Murray); 10 grandchildren, 17 greatgrandchildren, and numerous

nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, S. Harley and Gracie B. Angus, 2 brothers, Edgar and Charles Angus, 1 son-in-law, and 1 grandson.

Gene will be forever missed and loved dearly. His life was celebrated in a memorial service at Leonard Community Fellowship, 107 W. Hackberry Street, Leonard, Texas on Saturday, June 22, 2019. Rev. Willie Johnson officiated.

She married Edgar Windle Hughes on September 6, 1981 in Texas; he preceded her in death on August 13, 1998. Winnie was an accountant for TRW. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Dallas and was baptized by Bro. Grear in 1967.

She is survived by son, Dennis Nelms and wife Susan and daughter, Shelly Nichols and husband David all of Dodd City, TX. She has 5 grandchildren, Lisa Williams, John Nichols, Stacy Nichols, Cathy Jones and Cody Nelms; 9 greatgrandchildren and 2 greatgreat-grandchildren; along with her brother, Ernest Rice of Garland and three sisters, Aleta Baldwin and husband Rodney of Minneola, Patsy Holland of Rowlett, and Janice West of Canton.

Mr. Cox passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2019 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, TX. Willie “Bill” Martin Cox was born in Denison, TX on October 22, 1939 to Noel W. Cox and Bertha Marie (Holcomb) Cox. He married Patsy Karen (Cobb) Cox on May 10, 1980 in Denison, TX; she preceded him in death on November 28, 2011.

Bill was a truck driver and hauled freight. He was also of the Baptist faith.

Texoma Senior Corps celebrates Foster Grandparent Program volunteers

SHERMAN, JUNE 13, 2019 – Officials from Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG) hosted a recognition event today to honor the Texoma Foster Grandparent (FGP) volunteers of Cooke, Fannin and Grayson counties.

The Foster Grandparent Program, authorized by Congress in 1965, became active in Texoma in 1997.

Texoma residents age 55 and older with a heart to serve who meet certain income level requirements, are able to pass a physical and criminal background check, and can commit to a minimum of 15 hours a week are invited to join the program. A small stipend and excess liability insurance are provided to volunteers who participate in the program.

As part of the celebration and recognition for their service, volunteers enjoyed a trip to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas. The museum tour was exhilarating and inspired all who attended, reminding everyone of how spectacular the universe is and that it is never too late to learn.

The Foster Grandparent volunteers enjoyed lunch at the Perot Museum café and also participated in a special awards presentation where volunteers were recognized for milestone anniversaries and volunteer hours served.

A special “Volunteer of the Year” award was presented to Rata Perry, and the Foster Grandparent “Station of the Year” was awarded to Fairview Elementary School in Sherman.

TCOG executive director, Eric Bridges, commented, “Foster Grandparent volunteers provide a positive and productive impact on the children they interact with on a daily basis. Our community continues to be

blessed and supported by these senior volunteers who dependably give of themselves to support area children who need it the most.”

The regional Foster Grandparent Program currently consists of 51 volunteers who mentor approximately 150 children at over 30 volunteer host stations throughout Texoma including schools, day cares and community facilities. Texoma FGP volunteers are role models and mentors who provide support to children with exceptional needs.

Texoma Senior Corps programs benefit both the community and the volunteers, creating a win-win experience for everyone involved.

In 2018, volunteers contributed over 40,000 hours of service equivalent to nearly $1.1 million in value according to the Independent Sector Website on The Value of Volunteer Time.

The Texoma Council of Governments is a voluntary association of the local governments in Cooke, Fannin, and Grayson counties. Established in 1968, Texoma Council of Governments promotes economy and efficiency in the coordinated planning and development of the tri-county region through its community and economic development activities. Both directly and through contractors, the Council provides housing, utility assistance, and weatherization services for low-income citizens in the region and assists the elderly through a variety of Area Agency on Aging programs.

Ex-DC standout Carter transfers 7/22/14 to Austin College for hoops, future

By Rich Hilliard Former Dodd City standout Lindsay Carter will continue her basketball career and education at Austin College in Sherman.

“While I am very thankful for my time at Concordia [University], transferring to Austin College is the best decision for my future as a whole,” said Carter. “Austin College offers a wonderful opportunity through their teaching program. Through this program, I will graduate with my bachelor’s [degree] in the spring of 2021 and my masters in the spring of 2022 as a certified teacher for the state of Texas.

“I am also very excited to expand my knowledge for the game under head coach Michelle Filander and get to play along side some great players,” she said. “Getting my master’s at AC will also give me the opportunity to transition into a graduate assistant position under Coach Filander as I look to teach and coach after graduation.

“I am very excited to be joining an exceptional program where the opportunities are endless.”

Carter comes to Austin College of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference after playing for two seasons in Austin, Texas, at Concordia University of the American Southwest Conference with whom she signed in 2017. Both are Division III schools.

“I am really looking forward to Lindsay joining our program,” said Filander, who will be returning for her tenth season at the AC helm. “She played [for] two years in a tough women’s basketball conference and produced consistently there.

“I’m excited to add that experience to our team,” she said. “[Lindsay] plays

In her finale for Concordia, Carter set her collegiate career highs in points, field goals made and 3-pointers hit in a game on Feb. 16 -a rare contest when she did not start during the 2018-19 season.

Carter scored 23 points in 22 minutes, hitting 7-of-12 from the field -- making 6-of8 behind the arc -- with seven rebounds -- five while on defense -- in a 67-64 home win in ASC play against Sul Ross State to close the regular season.

On Jan. 24, at Sul Ross, Carter, as a starter, had 19 points on a 6-of-12 effort that included three 3-pointers and six rebounds -- all but one of the latter, a defensive board -- in 28 minutes to begin a five-game road trip.

She followed that performance on Jan. 26 at Howard Payne with 11 points and five rebounds -- all defensive boards -- in 28 minutes.

During said sophomore season, Carter grabbed 87 total rebounds -- 60 on the defensive end -- during the 25-game campaign.

Coming mostly off the

bench, she also excelled on the defensive boards as a freshman, getting 50 of 68 rebounds there. She posted a double-double -- a careerhigh 11 rebounds with 11 points -- in a game at University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Jan. 20, 2018.

Her offensive and defensive play earned her a spot on the ASC all-freshman team and helped Concordia reach the conference tournament semifinals to cap a 27-game season.

“I’m proud of myself for what I accomplished while at Concordia,” said Carter, “but I am still hungry for more.

“I want to win a conference championship,” she said, “and compete in the NCAA tournament with my teammates.”

Carter, who hit 31.4 percent of her 3-point attempts as a sophomore after hitting 33 behind the arc as a freshman at Concordia, will join an AC women’s team which notched a few accomplishments last season: firstconsecutive 20-win seasons since the late 1990s, ranked for the first time in the D3Hoops.com Top 25 -- as high as No. 19. -- and second-seeded in the conference tournament after a 13-3 effort.

“We graduated our leading rebounder and are looking to several members of the team to make up those boards,” said Filander.

“Lindsay has the ability to help there as well as score consistently from the perimeter.”

Said Carter: “I think I will fit in well with the team. To me, it’s not about starting or scoring the most points, but being the best teammate I can be. Whatever my role may be for next season, I will embrace it with an open mind by working hard and having a positive attitude. I have no doubt that this next season will be great and I am so excited to be a part of it! Go Roos!”

DC in third-place tie in final Lone Star Cup 1A standings

The school deadlocked with Abbott for No. 3 in the standings, trailing only winner Nazareth (62) and runner-up Gail Borden County (59).

In girls sports, the Lady Hornets’ highlights included reaching the volleyball re-

gional quarterfinals, girls basketball state championship game and softball state semifinals. Dodd City won district titles in volleyball and girls basketball and garnered the top 1A seed out of its district to advance to the 1A softball postseason.

The Hornets’ highlights included advancing to the 1A state baseball semifinals and area round of the boys basketball postseason.

Dodd City secured the top 1A seed out of its baseball district to qualify and won a district title in boys basket-

ball.

In 1A, Dodd City’s battery -- freshman pitcher Tori Dotson and junior catcher Delaney Pilliod -- and Ector senior pitcher Destiny Whitburn garnered selections.

Trenton senior pitcher Jessica Withrow, a Tarleton State signee, earned a selection in 2A. Withrow also garnered a spot on TGCA’s Legacy Team for 1A-4A -- the first such honor for a Trenton player in the history of softball at the school.
