Dear Fannin County Residents of Commissioner Precinct 1, Early runoff voting for Commissioner of Precinct 1 will be held June 29 - July 2 and July 6 - July 10 at the Bonham Armory. The final election day is July 14 and will also be at the Bonham Armory. This election is of critical importance, because we have the opportunity to elect a candidate who is truly competent to address the pressing issues Fannin County currently faces, as well as new challenges that are inevitable in the future. I urge all of you to

evaluate the candidates based on (1) their current presence in the community on behalf of the citizens of Fannin County; (2) their efforts to understand the crucial issues that the commissioners are responsible for in managing the county; and (3) the detailed plans they have conveyed through the media to successfully represent Precinct 1, in particular, and Fannin County in general.

Please employ discernment and wisdom in making your choice. Your vote will greatly impact the county, either positively or negatively, for years to come.

Please accept my belated Father’s Day greetings. It is my hope that you who are fathers have been blessed on your special day. Two weeks from today we will be giving special recognition to July 4th. To help us, I will be focusing on a prayer that was written by the father of a soldier. The contents will reveal a great nation, a great general, and a great prayer that will focus on family life and freedom. Now, let’s look at my thought for this week. Let me tell you how 10,000 prisoners of war at

County Commissioner Pct. 1 Runoff Early voting for Fannin County Commissioner Precinct 1 is days away. There are two very different candidates running for this office. This election is for the future of our county. Residents of Precinct 1 have the opportunity to have their voices heard in this election.

One candidate in his own words retired too early and needs a job, is not a leader and has no plans to shake things up. In short, he represents the current status quo on the Commissioners Court.

It’s time to use those tomatoes that you’ve been growing!

I planted just 3 tomato plants this year, but they are producing beautiful tomatoes right now. This recipe will help you use up all those extra tomatoes.

SPINACH-TOPPED TOMATOES 4 bunches fresh spinach or 2 pkgs. frozen ½ cup butter or margarine, softened ¾ cup seasoned bread crumbs 2 scallions, chopped fine 2 tsp. garlic, minced ½ tsp. black pepper, freshly ground Salt to taste 2 eggs, beaten 1 tsp. fresh thyme or 1 pinch dry 1 ½ tsp. Tabasco sauce ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, grated 6 tomatoes, thick sliced 8 oz. mushrooms, sliced Wash spinach thoroughly, cook, and drain well. Chop coarsely. If using frozen, cook and drain. Combine with the remaining ingredients except for the tomatoes. Mix well.

Place in a baking dish coated with cooking spray and bake for 15 minutes. Put tomato slices on baking sheet. Place in oven and bake both for 10 minutes longer. Place a rounded spoonful of the spinach mixture on top of each tomato slice. Sprinkle with a little more Parmesan over, and serve immediately.

Commissioners Consider Culvert Permitting

A regular meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court was called to order at 9:01 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, by County Judge Randy Moore, in Bonham City Hall, and via teleconference. Judge Moore established quorum; all Commissioners were present.

The invocation was given

by Reverend Lynn Holly, of Cavalry Baptist Church in Bonham. Major James Manis led the pledges. There were no introductions and no comments in public forum.

6 Judge Moore noted that there have been no new Orders from Governor Abbott’s Office that would change the Fannin County Declaration of Disaster Proclamation for Covid-19 this week, though more changes will come as the state reopens.

A report from Dr. Froelich, the Fannin County Health Authority, showed that the State has come to inspect the Mullican Care Center in Savoy after six residents of the seven in the Center who contracted Covid-19 died. The Center has been tested twice, and as many as five employees have also tested positive, though not all are residents of Fannin County. Another resident of Savoy has also tested positive, and at Clyde Cosper Veterans Home, at least two employees and one new resident are confirmed cases of the virus.

Also, one youth, a Bonham High School athlete, has tested positive. The addition of the Mullican residents brings Fannin County to eight total deaths from Covid-19. The statewide push on testing has, however, revealed zero cases in the Honey Grove Nursing Center and the Bonham VA, and no new inmates have tested positive. Judge Moore strongly cautioned those in the older age brackets to practice social distancing to protect themselves. A motion to extend Proclamation one week until June 23, 2020, passed.

7 With no new Orders, the Covid-19 Response and Continuity of Operations Plan for Fannin County was extended one week with no additional changes.

9 County Treasurer David Woodson gave the Treasurer’s Financial Report for May 2020, which showed receipts at $794,616.04, which is an increase of more than $38,000 from May 2019 despite the pandemic. Some of the income is from a yearly allowance to the Tax Assessor/ Collector from the State. The Financial Report was approved.

11 Judge Moore opened a discussion on approving the fiscal year 2020 Memorandum of Understanding between Fannin County and Texoma Council of Governments for the utilization of equipment purchased through Homeland

Security Grant Division.

6/11/19 Emergency Management Coordinator Jerry Huffman confirmed that the equipment is at this time confined to new digital radios for law enforcement. Old radios that are being replaced are distributed to Volunteer Fire Departments and the Police Departments of smaller towns in the County. A motion to approve the Memorandum of Understanding passed.

12 Commissioner Lackey suggested implementing a Culvert Permitting Process for the County, which would allow landowners to pay for and install their own culverts, rather than be required to wait for their precinct to fill the request.

Commissioner Lackey used the plans from Hunt County as a basis for the process, which would involve 1) landowners submitting an application to Developmental Services Director Lita Huffman, 2) the precinct Commissioner recommending the size for the culvert, and 3) a County inspection once the culvert has been installed. After the initial cost from the landowner, the County would take over maintenance and replacement of the culvert. The County will not sell culverts to landowners.

Though it is not certain whether a fee can be charged for the permit, the County would save time and money by not having to install culverts, and landowners would be able to put in culverts on their own timetable instead of depending on an overcrowded waiting list. Commissioner Self agreed with the terms specifying the 3-5 business days for an application and site visit to be approved, and the minimum required length for the culverts.

Commissioners discussed how much freedom they could allow in type, size, and gage of the culvert. Commissioner Lackey recommended no action until all Commissioners had time to consider adapting the process to Fannin County, and the discussion was tabled until the next regular meeting.

13 Purchasing Agent Michelle Case requested approval to purchase Covid-19 PPE from the CARES Act Funding but noted that Emergency Management Coordinator Jerry Huffman may be able to secure some of the equipment for the County at no cost.

There is no guarantee that free equipment can be obtained, however, and there is a concern that if the County relies only on this possibility, the required PPE for upcoming elections may not arrive in time.

Therefore, the purchase must be approved in case the PPE must be ordered. A motion to approve up to $2,000 for PPE, including shipping, passed.

14 County Auditor Alicia Whipple explained the Software as a Service (SaaS) contract with Tyler Technologies, which provides Fannin County with programs such as Odyssey, Judge’s Bench, Jail Management, Judge’s Edition E-Signatures, and Live Scan, will need an agreement renewal for the next three years. The package is for the entire county, though each

department pays for its portion of the contract. A motion to renew the agreement passed.

15 County Auditor Alicia Whipple spoke on entering into an agreement with Justice Benefits, Inc. (JBI), regarding the Title IV-E Legal Program, which could help the County recoup indigent attorney costs for Child Protective Services (CPS). Auditor Whipple introduced Marketing Representative Kelsey Fry, who explained JBI is a government consulting firm, specializing in federal revenue maximization to help local and state governments navigate the federal reimbursement process. The IV-E Legal Program reimburses costs for CPS efforts, such as guardian expenditures and attorney and court costs. JBI collects data on these costs into a quarterly claim for the County to present for reimbursement. JBI takes 22% of the reimbursement, but will not take their payment until the County has received the funds, which means if the County receives nothing, JBI will be owed nothing. Auditor Whipple estimated the County spends between $300,000 and $400,000 each year on CPS. Fannin County has used JBI once in the past for a different service, and they sought out Fannin County to offer this new service, so Auditor Whipple has not yet weighed the benefits JBI offers with other services. The amount reimbursed will depend on the kids in the system in Fannin County, though Auditor Whipple estimated most kids in CPS are indigent. Purchasing Agent Michelle Case stated that without this service, the County will not recoup any costs. Kelsey Fry noted that claiming past costs may not be allowed, but that JBI can begin as early as the next quarter once everything is in place. Commissioner Self was concerned at agreeing to terms of a 22% commission without looking into other services first. A motion to approve a one-year agreement with JBI passed.

16 Auditor Whipple explained that Fannin County has had an Interlocal Agreement with Grayson County that pays $50 per day per inmate housed. Since December Fannin County has housed one Grayson inmate on these terms to protect them until they can testify, but the amount paid per inmate has not been updated and is less than the daily cost Fannin County pays to house local inmates. To amend this disparity, the Agreement should be revised to reflect current costs. Commissioner Lackey questioned whether it wouldn’t be more prudent for the County to reword the Agreement to match the rate of Fannin County as it changes, rather than designating a specific cost that will require further updates in the future.

Commissioners agreed, and the item was tabled until the next regular meeting to allow time for a correction in the Agreement’s terms.

Commissioner Magness asked everyone to bear with him and his fellow Commissioners during all the meetings this time of the year and stated they all make every effort to think through every decision. He also asked drivers to slow down around his men working on the roads. Commissioner Lackey announced the FM 897 bridge will be opening sometime in July, and there will also be new bridges opening in his and Commissioner Magness’s precincts. The courthouse project is coming along; it’s in the ugly phase, but soon it will be taking shape. Commissioner Lackey asked Judge Moore to speak about the upcoming public hearing on Thursday, June 18. Judge Moore noted that the hearing will involve a subdivision requesting to change its status from agricultural to residential and that the developer wishes to set up a homeowner’s association with manufactured homes on lots of an acre or more. There has been a lot of disapproval for this plan, and Lita Huffman has received several letters opposing it. Though anyone will be welcome to speak at the hearing, Judge Moore encouraged anyone with land close to the subdivision to speak up, as their voice will legally count the most. Guidelines of the proposed development have been posted on the County website. In adhering to social distancing practices, the room in the City Hall must remain at fifty percent capacity, but if anyone arrives to speak at the hearing and may not safely sit in the room, they may wait in the lobby or outside for their turn to speak.

Judge Moore appreciates the County Appraisal District for their help on the budget work and noted that the budgets are looking good. He ended by wishing Commissioner Self an early happy birthday.

on subdivision development led the Court to seek from Mr. Harrison further information to prepare them for the Public Hearing over the Lake Trail Estates subdivision to occur the next day on Thursday, June 18. Relating to this upcoming Hearing, Newt Cunningham prompted discussion on how

to address the opposition to the subdivision’s request that Commissioners expect to see.

Officials worked together to explore all options so they might be prepared at the Hearing to give a judgement that will provide a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Judge Moore began by reading a description of the property and noted that information from residents in the area that has been sent directly to him, as well as all chats from the teleconference, will be entered into the record.

Three residents neighboring the development property stood up to speak.

The first voiced his opposi-

tion to living next to a “mobile home park,” and expects to see crime activity and drug use escalate in the area as a direct result of the development. He shared his concern that existing law enforcement practices will not be enough to protect his home or the neighborhood.

The second resident thanked the Commission for their time and asked them to consider the Lake Crockett Estates development in the northern part of the County, near where a shooting in 2005 left five dead. He asked the Commission to deny the zoning change. The third resident was aware economi-

cal housing can be necessary for rural areas and was more concerned with the population density and roads that will not be able to sustain the resultant traffic. If the development is allowed to include fifty 1-acre lots, CR 2610 and FM 273 will both require work to make them safe for the increase in use. She also shared her concern that her property value will decrease and noted she does not object to the original zoning which would allow 5-acre lots. She is not in favor of the zoning change.

She read a list of deed restrictions imposed upon the lots by the owner and developer to ensure a quality subdivision, which includes minimum square footage and other specific qualities for the homes themselves, as well as a long list of situations, animals, and buildings which will not be permitted. She noted that these rules made the subdivision much stricter than the Lake restrictions require.

An audience member asked Commissioners how these restrictions can be enforced, and Judge Moore noted that the County will have no authority to make sure the restrictions are followed. Lita Huffman added that the owner of the property intends to enforce the restrictions initially, but expects a Home Owners Association to

self-govern later on. Bob McCraw said he understood the concern with the state of the roads, but that such a concern will be for the Commissioners Court to consider and act upon.

Gary Fernandez reminded the Commission that the economic benefits for the County must be taken into consideration, and Gilbert Welch agreed but noted that another major consideration was the 46 notices of opposition to the zoning change that has been received. Gilbert Welch continued to say that he doesn’t expect the land value to depreciate, but thinks a more immediate concern is that the development could impede an increase in appreciation. He urged the Commission to be both prodevelopment, and sensitive to landowners in the area and

Lake Zoning Commission Recommends Subdivision Zoning Change

The Bois D’ Arc Lake Zoning Commission convened for a public meeting Thursday, June 18, 2020, at 9:37 a.m. at Bonham City Hall and via teleconference. Commissioners Gilbert Welch, Kevin Darwin, Bob McCraw, and Gary Fernandez, and County Judge Randy Moore were present. The meeting minutes from 05/21/2020 were approved. There were no comments in Public Forum.

Development Services Director Lita Huffman presented details about the property under review, Lake Trail Estates subdivision. She explained the difference between a mobile home park and a manufactured home subdivision and emphasized Lake Trail Estates strives to be

Lita Huffman noted that of the 15 properties surrounding Lake Trail Estates, 13 have sent a letter opposing the development.

Kevin Darwin commented that the owner could legally, and without further permission, set up 23 total homes with far fewer restrictions than he has suggested, yet he has chosen to try to protect property value with these deed restrictions.

A motion was made to recommend approval of the zoning change from Agricultural to Rural Estate Single-Family District and requests the Commissioners Court pay special attention to population density and road structure. Gilbert Welch voted opposed, but the motion carried. The next meeting was set for Thursday, July 2, at 9 a.m.

While we all know what the typical, chronic laminitic horse looks like, many of us don’t realize that the long toe/ low heel conformation can contribute to caudal heel pain.

And thin soles can make even a normally sound horse look like a laminitic horse on hard or rocky surfaces. While some of these problems can only

While it can’t fix the tendons that are causing the horse to be “clubby,” at least it can make them comfortable enough to go without a shoe.

In the laminitic horse, we can actually get them to have a normal foot through the use of the rocker rail: Rocker rails are obviously not the solution to all problems.

However, it’s amazing what can be accomplished through x-ray guided shoeing. A lot of horses that were previously lame can be made a lot more comfortable just with changing the way their foot falls. Tools with a “cutting edge” should be made of a metal that will hold an edge when sharpened. It is important to use tools appropriate for the job. An oversize tool may be too unwieldy in a tight area while an undersized tool will snap and break under pressure.

General maintenance will extend the life of all tools.

Tighten loose handles and wipe wooden handles with linseed oil. Apply lightweight oil to the metal parts to prevent rusting.

As Jesus walked this earth, He brought to us the character, nature, and power of GOD into a lost and confused world.

He told His disciples…”PRAY AND NEVER GIVE UP!” Luke 18:8 But what is prayer – really? The actual words we speak does not adequately define prayer. Prayer has been used in corporate and government settings, stadiums, Bible studies, at mealtimes and small groups.

It has been used by governors, kings, presidents, and religious leaders. Even the most glorious words cannot define prayer. The original word for Prayer comes from a word that has a picture meaning as well as a word definition. It does mean to intercede. Our Savior is at The Right Hand of The Father NOW, interceding for us (Hebrews 4:14-16). The Holy Spirit intercedes for us when we don’t know how to pray. (Romans 8:26) More than that, Prayer is a picture of intimacy, a picture of a child sitting on his or her Father’s lap confiding their deepest secrets, desires, and concerns. It is a picture of a married couple retreating from their daily lives and responsibilities to celebrate one another- their love, their dreams, their differences. It is a time to focus on nothing but one another. To speak honestly and to listen earnestly. We can be sure that not only does God want to hear our voice – HE WANTS US TO HEAR HIM. When I was three years old, my parents belonged to a large church in our community. It had the best of everything – a heavenly choir, grandest organ, high ceilings and ornate columns, well-stocked classrooms, and programs for every age group. As a child, it was a bit overwhelming for me. Every Sunday brought me to tears and terror. Regardless of assurances by my parents and teachers, I could not shake these fears and sense of abandonment. No matter how hard I tried not to cry, I always had slits for eyes and a swollen red face when my mother arrived at the door. Thankfully, I did develop some social skills as I grew older. As a result, I don’t remember many people from church in those days, although we were always there, at least 4 times each week and sometimes more depending on what was happening in the extensive programs. But there was one - one woman who always seemed to be present. She was small, quiet, and neatly, but demurely, dressed. I don’t remember her saying too much, but she was part of the “board” that heard our Girl’s Club steps of accomplishment. Having to memorize whole chapters of the Bible, we then had to recite them to a “Board” for a pass or fail grade in order to pass to the next step. It was terrifying, but looking back, I am convinced this experience had a profound influence on memory development and I have never forgotten those scriptures. But the most important part, this quiet, small woman, Sachse (pronounced Saxie) who said little was the largest presence in the room. There was something different about her face, her countenance. It was one of approval and encouragement. I don’t ever remember sitting down to have a conversation with her except once. Our young teen class had taken a test to help us determine what we were suited for in our life’s work based on how we answered the questions. Sachse delivered my results with her suggestions for my future consideration. Surprisingly, on my entering the room, she said to me with delight, “This fits you perfectly.” How did she know? We had never had a conversation. As she unfolded the layers of the test, I sat in astonishment. She knew me, but how did she know ME? Years after I left home and moved to the Metroplex, Sachse passed on to be with the Lord. I knew little of my hometown community in those days. Some years ago, my sister told me she had gone to Sachse’s home before her death because she could not attend church due to failing health. She said she went into her bedroom. The bed Sachse no longer slept in was covered with bits of paper. On each slip of paper was someone’s name. It was her place of intimacy with God. She brought each name to The One she loved the most – the All-Powerful God of The Universe, Jesus Christ her Lord. And for the first time I knew why she knew me. My name surely was or had been on one of those slips of paper. She was a Priest in the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ. She spoke my name, and He Listened and acted in my life.

Sachse knew, and now I know, that Our Father never forgets a prayer. He treasures them and keeps all those intimate moments [Prayer] with Him before His Throne in a golden censor. (Rev 5:8)

Game Warden Field Notes

Ya Snooze Ya Lose While patrolling around Lake Somerville, a Washington County game warden noticed a vehicle parked in the road with its flashers on. When the warden approached the vehicle, he noticed that the subject inside had fallen asleep. Upon waking the person, the warden asked him to step out of the vehicle, revealing a meth pipe in plain view. The subject was then detained, and a search was performed on the vehicle.

The search turned up almost 6 grams of suspected meth, tablets of suspected Xanax and marijuana, along with multiple forms of paraphernalia. The subject was taken into custody and multiple citations were issued.

Ghosted Lake Belton is known as a great spot for jugline fishing.

However, this can sometimes cause problems with “ghost fishing”, killing fish and littering in the lake. A Bell County game warden cleaned up over 40 improperly marked or derelict juglines along the north end of the lake. Unfortunately, there were many juglines that the warden had to leave behind as his boat couldn’t store any more. As a result of his cleanup effort, one 20” and one 16” blue catfish were returned to the lake. Multiple citations were issued to all individuals identified with illegal juglines.

More patrols will be scheduled to pick up remaining equipment and citations will be issued.

Cooper GOOD. Water lightly stained; 85 degrees; 0.15’ high.

Largemouth bass are fair on Texas rigged plastic craws, crankbaits, and jigs in 7-18’.

The white bass are excellent in 12-30’ with slabs, jigs and jigging spoons over humps and flats. Crappie are good with minnows in standing timber and brush piles. Catfish are good on live and cut bait in 4-16’.

Fork EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 85 degrees; 0.07’ high. Largemouth bass are good on plastic creatures, bladed jigs, and crankbaits near drop-offs, brush, grass lines, and points in 8-12’. White and yellow bass are excellent in the deeper water of main lake points, flats, and humps. Crappie are good on jigs and minnows in 12-20’ in brush piles and standing timber. Catfish are good on cut bait and punch bait in 4-15’.

Tawakoni EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 81-84 degrees; 0.59’ high. Catfish are excellent on live bait, blood bait and cut bait 3-12’ along brushy shorelines and rip-rap. Large-

mouth bass are good on spinnerbaits, plastic worms, and crankbaits in 6-12’. White bass and hybrid stripers are excellent on swimbaits and slabs. Watch for diving birds to mark feeding schools or use sonar to locate fish feeding in schools of bait over deeper points, creek beds, and humps in the main lake.

Crappie are good on minnows and jigs around brush piles, docks, and marinas.

Texoma EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 77 degrees; 2.54’ high. Striped bass and white bass are excellent on live bait and topwater baits when fish are near the surface. Diving birds are marking feeding schools on the surface throughout the lake. Use sonar to mark schools along the river channel. Largemouth bass are fair fishing plastic creatures, shaky worms, jigs, swimbaits, and crankbaits in 6-18’. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs by boathouses, marinas and brush piles 12-25’. Catfish are excellent on cut bait and blood bait in 4-20’.

Ector to have new managers for softball, baseball squads

BONHAM -- On the high school level, soccer holds a unique place in Fannin County.

While it’s played individually by athletes -- at the club level, possibly, or in other leagues -- only one school -- Bonham -- currently fields teams.

As the University Interscholastic League, starting June 8, allowed high school athletes to return to campus after almost three months (thanks a lot, COVID-19) -- for strength and conditioning, as well as their sports, all involving socialdistancing -- soccer players

As athletes of various sports across the Bonham High School campus toiled on June 10 during the unusually cool -- but welcome -- morning weather, the Lady Warriors and Warriors also prepared for the 2020-21 soccer season.

The shutdown this spring did not deny Bonham soccer players a chance to vie in the postseason, having been eliminated before the statewide UIL decision -- first to pause (March 16) and then cancel (April 17) spring sports seasons. However, it did deny them their last match day in 2020.

Hopefully, athletes in all sports during the coming seasons will start on time -and get to finish -- unlike the 2020 campaigns.

BonhamTerry Lee W o o d , age 76, of Bonham, TX was born on September 9, 1943 in Casper, WY to C.A and Laura (Humphrey) Wood. He passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at his home in Bonham, TX. Terry was a loving father and grandfather, he loved spending time with his family. Terry served honorably in the United States Army. He enjoyed playing solitaire and was an auto body tech.

Terry is survived by son, Shane Wood; grandchildren, Kristin Wood, Kolton Wood and Kayla Shadden.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of CooperSorrells Funeral Home Bonham, TX. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Wyoming.

KENNETH DARRELL DAVIS

BonhamGraveside services for Kenneth D a r r e l l D a v i s , age 85 of Ravenna, TX were held at 9:00am on Friday, June 19, 2020 at Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham, TX. Grandson, Matt Davis officiated.

Mr. Davis passed away on Monday, June 16, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Kenneth Darrell Davis was born on May 16, 1935 in Lannius, TX to Oscar and Loucile (Deets) Davis. Ken served our county as a Sargent in the United States Army during Korea. He was a long time employee of General Cable where he retired in 1979.

Ken was Commander of the VFW in Mineral Wells, TX. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bonham, TX. Ken was a real outdoorsman. He loved gardening, fishing, canoeing, hunting and collecting good junk. He loved horses and was a serious rider. He rode a mule and lead trail rides in Weatherford each year. He also loved history and was a prolific reader. Ken was a champion domino player.

He is survived by, wife, Vivian “Pill” (Gaebler) Davis of Ravenna; children, Vickie Davis of Bonham, Donna Davis Trent and husband Frank; Rusty Davis and wife Sharon of Bonham and Danny Davis and wife Deb of Ravenna; Vickie Putman and husband Mike, Gearld Baldwin and wife Paula, Donnie Baldwin and wife Cyndi; grandchildren, Heath, Sydney, Drew, Matt, Lyndsay, Amanda, Devin, Dustin, Lauren, Michelle Shearin, Courtney Avery and Cody Putman; 21 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and family.

Ken is preceded in death by son, Mike; son, Cody; mother and father, Loucile and Oscar Davis; sisters, Betty, Sandy, Brenda and Shirley and brother, Dwayne.

Serving as pallbearers were Drew Davis, Heath Davis, Dustin Russell, Jim McDonald, Jared Hudson and Mike Putman.

LLOYD CURTIS NICHOLSON

Lloyd Curtis Nicholson of Honey Grove passed away June 13, 2020 at the age of 91 at a senior care residence in Fort Worth with his wife by his side.

He was born February 26, 1929 in Fannin County. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Nina Gene McKinney Nicholson, sons, Steven, Ricky (wife Teresa), Ronald (wife Terri), and one daughter, Melody Nicholson, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Nicholson Pearson, numerous nieces, nephews and other loved ones.

He is preceded in death by his young grandson, Nicky.

He and Nina were childhood friends, attended Honey Grove schools and married in 1948. They moved to Fort Worth and then to Arlington where they raised their family. He worked at General Dynamics then at the Arlington General Motors Assembly Plant for 30 years before retiring in 1985.

Lloyd was a car enthusiast his entire life. He bought and sold numerous vintage cars, spent countless nights under the hoods of cars and enjoyed entering his classic cars in shows winning many trophies over the years.

He was a charter member of the Lone Star Vintage Chevrolet Club and other car clubs. He and Nina participated twice in the vintage car Great American Race across the United States.

Lloyd and Nina moved back to Honey Grove in 1986 spending much of their time restoring their 100 year old home, volunteering with the Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity, the Kiwanis Club and Bug Tussle Trek and basically anything to beautify and benefit his beloved hometown.

Lloyd was a deacon at First Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband, father and grandpa, and a friend to many. He enjoyed helping those in need and was a quiet, generous man with a big heart. In later years, Parkinson’s Disease robbed him of his strength and stamina, but the work ethic he instilled in his family will certainly continue on.

The family would like to thank the staff of Christian Care Community at Lakewood Village for the special care they gave to our dad and continue to give our mother.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at First Baptist Church, 410 Hickory St, Honey Grove. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove. Serving as pallbearers were Ricky Nicholson, Ronnie Nicholson, Steve Nicholson, Reece Nicholson, Logan Nicholson and Samson Croucher.”

RUBY LOMETA BEDWELL

BonhamRuby Lometa Bedwell, age 83, of Bonham, TX was born in Granbury, TX on January 20, 1937 to Lionel Earl and Hester (Kuykendall) Lusk and passed away on Friday, June 12, 2020 while at the Bonham Nursing Center. Private family chapel services led by Bro. Troy Miles were held on Tuesday, June 16, 2020. Interment followed at Arledge Ridge Cemetery at 10:00am. Serving as pallbearers

were Dale Horton, Michael Stockton, Cord Myers and Ethan Myers.

Ruby Lometa (Lusk) Bedwell married Ronald Bedwell on March 5, 1979 in Bonham, TX; he preceded her in death on October 21, 2004. She owned and operated Ruby’s Hamburgers and had the best hamburgers in Bonham. Ruby enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. She loved the Lord and her church and was very proud that she was old-time Pentecostal. Ruby was dedicated to church and was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God. She was also dedicated to her family. Ruby was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be missed dearly.

She is survived by daughters, Carolyn Jane Beshirs of Platter, OK and Sandra Marie Rogers of Anna, TX; grandchildren, Christopher Beshirs, Deretha Beshirs Myers, Brandon Webster, Kimi Moody and granddaughterin-law, Sherry Beshirs; several great grandchildren and siblings, Brenda Atnip, Lola Fry, and Margie Holmsley. ALBERT EDWARD (ED) WILLIAMSON, JR.

A l b e r t Edward (Ed) Williamson, Jr., born in Bonham, TX on April 16, 1927 to Albert and Launa Williamson, went home to be with the Lord on June 9th, 2020, at the age of 93. Ed was predeceased by his first wife, Madeline McMillin, and his grandson, Scott Williamson. Ed is survived by his wife, June Smalley, his son, Stephen, and wife, Marsha, his grandsons Logan (Amanda) and Kirk (Allyson), great-grandchildren Emma Grace and Kyle, sister and brother-in-law, Lou Ann and Robert Fletcher, his three nieces and their families.

Ed attended Texas A&M prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy towards the end of WW II, satisfying a life-long dream of being a pilot.

He flew his last plane on his 90th birthday. Ed was a watchmaker for over 30 years at Sterling Jewelry in Dallas where he became one of the few certified Rolex repairmen in the U.S. Beyond his career, Ed utilized his mechanical engineering mind to research and learn through library books how to design and build the family’s first lake house at Texoma including all of the plumbing and electrical systems.

Upon retirement, Ed embraced life with new zeal. He took up tennis and played up until he was 92, routinely beating men decades his junior. He formed wonderful friendships with his tennis buddies. At 90, he won the Fredericksburg Mixed Double Championship with his 70 year old partner, beating a team which included an 18 year old! Ed also took up golf and enjoyed it thoroughly. At 88, he actually shot his age while beating his son by a stroke!

No surprise, Ed decided to pick up his clarinet from high school and taught himself to play his favorite jazz songs. Soon, he was a member of the Think Band formed with friends from his home church at First United Methodist Church in Dallas, and several other bands which played weekly in retirement centers and senior citizen centers.

In 2004, Ed met the love of his life, June Smalley. He spotted her playing as the substitute pianist for one of his bands. They married in 2005, sharing their love for music, golf and tennis. In 2011, they moved to Kerrville, TX and lived a very happy life, enjoying

the gorgeous view from their deck and the slower-paced, small town life.

Ed was one of the first members of the Aldersgate Class at First Methodist where he made life-long, dear friends.

Due to Covid-19 and the church’s closure, Ed’s service was held at Park Cities Presbyterian Church located at 4124 Oak Lawn at 3:00pm on Thursday, June 18th.

PEGGY JOYCE HILBURN Homegoing f u n e r a l services for Peggy Joyce Hilburn were held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 20, 2020 in the Wise Funeral Home Chapel in Bonham, Texas.

Rev. Eddie Owens officiated.

Burial followed in the New Harmony Cemetery in Ladonia, Texas.

Peggy was born in Ladonia, Texas on December 5, 1949 to Idle Joyce Posey and Charles Hilburn.

She attended Washington High School and graduated from Bonham High School.

She relocated to Los Angeles California after graduation and took a job in the Registrar’s office at the University of Southern California, where she worked for several years. Peggy returned to Bonham where she tended her mother and grandmother for many years until their deaths.

Prior to becoming disabled, she was committed to her passion of volunteering at the food pantry at Calvary Baptist Church. Peggy relocated to Ontario, Oregon to live with her uncle and aunt when she encountered serious medical issues and remained there until she departed this life on June 10, 2020.

Peggy was a book of knowledge and had a memory like an elephant. If you existed, she knew you. If it happened, she knew it. If you wanted to, you asked her. If you knew her, you loved her. She had the strangest sleeping pattern of anyone I know, just ask her friends who she woke up at the ungodly hours of the night and morning. She never met a stranger, she simply loved people. Once she knew your name you were subjected to her sense of humor, just ask her care providers. She was kindhearted and stood ready to help anyone in need, despite her stubbornness.

She will be truly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her mother Idle Joyce Posey, grandmother Nettie Ree McKinney, dad Charles Hilburn, sister Gloria Thompson, brother Gary Hilburn.

Immediate Release - Do you have an abundance of produce from your home garden?

Fannin County Master Gardeners and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Fannin County invite you to be a part of our Garden to Table project.

June 22 and 29 from 8am12pm, we will be accepting garden fresh produce at the

Derrell Hall Education Center (2505 N. Center Street in Bonham). This produce will be distributed to families during the Feeding Fannin weekly meals.

Thanks to generous donations from John and Martha Bearden of Ravenna, we have been able to provide fresh squash and zucchini to over 400 families

in the past two weeks!

The goal of this partnership is to share the abundance from your home garden with those who have limited access to fresh produce, and at the same time, reduce food waste.

Nominate a Texoma Hero Did your father, mother, son, daughter, uncle, aunt, friend, or neighbor serve in the military? Hot 107.3 FM along with Billy Teague and Bonham Chrysler would like to honor our veterans of Texoma for their bravery and continued service within their community through the “Texoma Heroes” program. The last Friday of every month we would like to award one special hero with a ceremonial flag.

This “Texoma Hero” will be awarded their ceremonial flag at noon at Bonham Chrysler and the award is open to any branch of the military.
