MOTHER
It's that time of year again for all of us to think of our own mothers at this time.
We sometimes forget what our mothers mean to us; the heartaches and the joys she went through for years and years, just to keep us safe. To make sure that we were all home safe before she could go to bed and to know she did the best she could do for us.
As I sit here writing this I thought I was a strong person, but looking back on things, I was weak compared to my mother. The pain of having twelve children all those years is more pain than I can comprehend.
On this Mother's Day, if you live close, go visit her if only for a few moments. If you cannot go see her, call her on the phone and tell her how much she is loved by you.
If you are like me and your mother is in that great heavenly city in the sky, go outside, raise your arms toward the sky. Look up and tell your mother that you love her and miss her. She will hear you.
Mothers are like a great big beautiful rose that shines on forever.

Approved Judge Cunningham cast a nay vote “We had some bad experiences with abatements. We got a solar farm that we, for 10 years, I think, we don’t get any money from it. And it lowered property values adjoining neighbors, and nobody was happy with that abatement, and we, leaving the door open for abatements, we’ve had problems with those. My understanding is the current, abatement policy has expired, we need to think about a new one and what we want in it. We haven’t had an abatement policy since 2023, and I think it’s something that we need some discussion about, some discussion groups and some input. I don’t see the rush. I do think we need to have some discussion and planning, and maybe set up a committee of citizens to look at what we would want as far as an abatement policy is concerned.” Savoy Mayor Roger Cada commented “I think that the residents would like to read this over as well, too. What we had in 2009, it was really well done and well written, and this way, then, when they come to the workshop, they

Missing Person Case Reopened:
Bonham, Texas — Moxxy Forensic Investigations is seeking the public’s assistance in a decades-old missing person case involving Carolyn Louise Briggs, who disappeared under suspicious circumstances in either 1970 or 1971.
Carolyn Briggs, a young mother of three, was last seen at her home in Bonham Texas, preparing for a night out “across the Red River” in Bokchito, Oklahoma. Carolyn and her sister were planning to travel from their home in Bonham, Texas to Bokchito. According to available information, Carolyn may have met an unidentified man that evening who offered her a ride home. She was never seen again.
Born on July 27, 1951, in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas, Carolyn was the daughter of Terry Eugene Cook and Amanda Briggs. At the time of her disappearance, Carolyn was living at 605 East 7th Street in Bonham, Texas with her three children. Following her disappearance, her children were eventually placed into the foster care system.
Carolyn’s mother, Amanda Mason, is believed to have filed a missing persons report with local authorities in Bonham shortly after Carolyn failed to return home. However, despite extensive efforts, Moxxy Forensic Inves-
tigations has been unable to locate any official record of that report. Agencies contacted include law enforcement in Bokchito and Durant, Oklahoma, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the City of Bonham, and Fannin County, Texas. No existing case file has been found. A missing person report has been officially filed with the Bonham Police Department as of February 2026.
All individuals known to have been part of Carolyn’s social circle at the time of her disappearance are now deceased, further complicating efforts to uncover the truth.
Carolyn is described as a Black female with a light complexion and black to brown hair. She stood approximately 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall and had a petite build. She had no dental restorations; her front teeth featured a noticeable gap and were slightly bowed. At the time she was last seen, she was wearing a short brown and yellow dress with flat black or brown shoes. Family members describe Carolyn as a devoted and loving mother whose disappearance was completely out of character. She was known to take pride in her appearance and was considered a trendsetter among her peers. Loved ones recall her often saying, “I’ll never leave my baby,” in reference to her daughter.
“This case represents a woman who seemingly vanished without a trace—and without a paper trail,” said Kaycee Connelly of Moxxy Forensic Investigations. “We believe someone, somewhere, still holds critical information that could bring answers to her family after more than five decades.”

Based on current projections, it is estimated that total, 30-year contributions into the Tax Increment Fund (TIF) will be $74.1 million, which would be reinvested entirely within the zone on eligible infrastructure improvements and catalytic redevelopment projects to support economic vitality. Among the many types of beneficial infrastructure improvements that could be funded from the TIF are sidewalks, trails, pedestrian bridges, roadways, utilities, landscaping, streetscape improvements, and monument and wayfinding signage.
An estimated, additional $74.1 million in incremental tax revenues generated within the zone would be shared by the City and County as general fund revenues in proportion to their tax rates: 61.1% City of Bonham and 38.9% Fannin County. This would mean an estimated, additional $45.3 million in general fund revenues for the City and an additional $28.8 million for the County over the life of the TIRZ.
“We are deeply appreciative of the collaborative effort between the City and County to study and establish this powerful tool,” said Bonham Economic Development Corporation (BEDCO) Executive Director William
Myers. “TIRZ #3 will contribute to achievement of our shared economic development objectives, which include realizing our Downtown Master Plan vision, while also attracting and incentivizing quality projects that meet our community’s needs. The creation of a 30year TIRZ also makes a powerful statement about Bonham’s serious, longterm commitment to maximizing the once-ina-generation opportunities downtown and along our high-visibility corridors. These are the areas that our residents and visitors experience the most, so we have to establish a community vision and get this right.”
of the TIRZ does not change any tax rate and will not take away money from either entity to fund ongoing maintenance or general operations. Ultimately, the TIRZ is designed to benefit local residents by spurring valuable economic development that enlarges the commercial tax base, supporting the future delivery of essential public services and community amenities.
Commercial collaborated to prepare a Preliminary Project and Financing Plan for TIRZ #3. This plan was subsequently presented at a public hearing to discuss benefits for the community and for property in the proposed zone, and this hearing also provided interested parties an opportunity to speak for or against the zone’s creation. Based on the preliminary plan and public input, the Bonham City Council and Fannin County Commissioners Court each formally approved the zone’s creation, established governance structures and set the current year as the base year for future, incremental tax revenue calculations. The Orphan Train Movement sent abandoned or homeless children from Eastern cities of the US to foster homes in rural areas. An estimated 200,000 children were involved in the program.
On November 18, 1898 a train carrying boys aged between 12 to 16 years arrived in Bonham, and a local committee chaired by Dr. R. E. Martin and Judge R. M. Lusk met the train. An article in the Bonham newspaper stated all of the boys got homes and that more could have been placed.
John E. Dibley (age 15) and his brother George Dibley (age 7) arrived on this train.
John was placed with a farm family, but he was in poor health and could not perform farm work. He was taken in by the family of Sam Hampton in Bonham and nursed back to health by Mrs. Hampton. He then began working for the Bonham News, and later became a student studying stenography and typewriting in a commercial college in Ft. Worth, Brantley Draughn. However, he became ill in Ft. Worth and returned to Bonham in 1904, where he died, at the age of 19, shortly thereafter at S. B. Allen Memorial Hospital. An obituary stated: “Everybody who knew Johnnie Dibley esteemed him highly and learned with deep regret of his death.”
He was buried at Willow Wild Cemetery in the plot of Dr. Richard Martin and his brother George attended the burial.
His burial plot remained unmarked until 2018, when a marker was placed by descendants of his brother George. George farmed in the Dial Community and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove.

Reversing Results Rewarded:
Gainesville district sweep carries Bonhi back into baseball
By Rich Hilliard
BONHAM -- Two more wins might not seem like much. But in the battle for the fourth-and-final postseason berth in District 9-4A baseball in 2026, a pair equated enough.
Bonham this season won all three district meetings against Gainesville -- 17-2 (5), 9-2, 10-5 -- to finish 3-9 in 9-4A play.
Contrast these results with last season, when all three district meetings with Gainesville ended in one-run decisions, including an extra-inning heartbreaker in the district play finale for the Purple Warriors who finished 1-11 in 9-4A play.
The sweep this season proved enough, as Bonham secured a baseball postseason return after a year absence under new manager Nick Rodgers, fourth place overall in the district standings and a spot in the Class 4A Division-II playoffs.

Unexpected State Soar: Lady Eagle golfer Laymance to vie in high school pinnacle
Story and photos by Rich
ECTOR -- Sophomore year has been one of first experiences for Ella Laymance.
In February, it happened in basketball: The sophomore helped Ector return to the girls' playoffs in the sport for the first time since 2022.
In April, it equated personal milestones: Obtaining her license and driving to school for the first time, after turning 16 earlier in the month.
In May, she will make her first appearance in the Class 1A State Girls' Golf Tournament.
"It's definitely not what I expected," said Laymance
on April 27.
"I did good at district," she said, referencing repeating as the 191A girls' tournament individuals runner-up.
"I don't know what happened at regionals. I guess I was just on my A-game. I didn't do anything to prepare."
To advance to State, Laymance shot a 207
(98-109), finishing sixth overall and third amongst individual qualifiers on April 16 in the Region III-1A Girls' Golf Tournament held at the Mount Pleasant Country Club.
"On the way to regionals," she said, "Coach (Joey) Grijalva said 'one of y'all needs to make it to State to make the boys mad."
A couple of days earlier on April 14, an Eagle golfer had just barely missed qualifying for State -by only three shots. But instead it will be Laymance equating the first Ector State golf qualifier since Austin Earl advanced as a junior in boys' golf in 2019. She will compete in the 1A State Girls' event May 4-5 at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander, Texas.
LT baseball in playoffs after sweeping play-in Leonard clinched 11-3A's fourth-and-final baseball postseason berth and the district's No. 2 spot in the Class 3A Division-II playoffs. The Tigers defeated Howe, 10-6, on April 28, after topping Blue Ridge, 5-3, on April 27, with both contests played at Princeton High School. It equates back-to-back postseason baseball advances for Leonard. --Rich Hilliard

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
This week’s devotion comes from Isaiah 40:31 and Psalm 62. Whenever we pray to the Lord for His help in these uncertain times, it is very important that we remember that He may not answer us right away. His timing is not the same as ours, however, it is always impeccable. A great example of this can be found in Psalm 62. First, David declares his patience upon the Lord to act on his behalf. Next, we see that David is confident that his enemies will not shake him because God is his Rock. Thirdly, after David declares his
patience, he pours his heart out to the Lord in prayer. Next, like David, we should put our faith, hope, and trust in the Lord, and Him alone, and not in the things of this world. Being Spirit-minded is a very important aspect of patiently waiting upon the Lord. Lastly, we must have faith and trust in God’s sovereignty and His greater plans for our lives, as David did. The Lord always knows what is best for us, and He has promised never to leave us not forsake us.
In 1787, Benjamin Beddome wrote this classic hymn that comes from the message in this passage.
“Wait, O my soul, thy
Maker’s will, Tumultuous passions all be still, Nor let a murmuring thought arise; His ways are just, his counsels wise. In realms of cloudless light he dwells, Performs his work, the cause conceals; And though his footsteps are unknown, Judgment and truth support his throne. Wait, then, my soul, submissive wait, With reverence bow before his seat, And ‘mid the terrors of his rod Trust in a wise and gracious God.”

Well, summer is just around the corner! When you read this, Lissa and I will be on our monthlong journey involving the Smoky Mountains, The Ark and Creation Museum, and precious time with our daughter and her family in Fife Lake, Michigan. I’m reminded of a quote often attributed to Rick Warren directed to pastors. He challenges us to “divert daily, withdraw weekly, and abandon annually.” There is
a lot of wisdom in this little quip. While it relates to those in ministry, I believe it is just as applicable to all of us. It is so important to daily unplug from the world just a little while daily to deeply connect with God and yourself. The idea of “the Sabbath” is critical for all of us as well. To withdraw weekly is to set aside a day a week to really rest and reset our hearts. Even our Great God who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then rested on the seventh.
I hope you all find some time to “abandon annually,” perhaps even this summer. While this is true and very much needed for all, it must not be a time to abandon God. Instead, the most effective way to refresh our heart and soul is to reset, refocus, and respond to Jesus’ invitation to “come to me, you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
(Matthew 11:28-30)
For His Gory, Lyn and Lissa
Taking Ownership
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
Christians must take ownership of teaching the truth. Paul took ownership of the gospel, “the preaching of Jesus Christ” (Romans 16:25), that “Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead” (2 Timothy 2:8), and that “God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ” (Romans 2:16).
Christians must take ownership of expectations found in holy scriptures. The Psalmist wrote “for my expectation is from
Road Rage Rudeness Hatefulness Division
Romans 12:18
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself. By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. Include and make time for GOD this Sunday
God” (Psalms 62:5). Paul’s “earnest expectation and hope” was that promise of salvation (Philippians 1:1920). Paul boldly wrote that “there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing” (2 Timothy 4:8). However, we find that “the expectation of the wicked shall perish” (Proverbs 10:28), because “the expectation of the wicked is wrath” (Proverbs 11:23).
Christians must take responsibility for the local congregation. We find that we are to “hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering” and “consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works” and “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together” (Hebrews 10:23-24).
Christians must be acceptable in our service to God. Paul pleaded “by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:1-2).
Christians must give the best to God. The Lord preached “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye
mete withal it shall be measured to you again” (Luke 6:38). Paul wrote about giving God the best, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting” (Galatians 6:7-8).
Christians are to take heed how we are to build the church. Paul established that “other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11), “But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon” (1 Corinthians 3:10). Peter wrote that Christians “as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5).
Christians are to take responsibility for our minds. We are told “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). Paul declared “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:6). Paul pleaded with Christians “that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10). Join the Ivanhoe church of Christ for our Gospel Meeting, May 10-13, 2026 with brother Heath Stapleton.
