of Transportation officials today announced that a project to improve and upgrade the

intersection of State Highway 56 and US 82 east of Honey Grove in Fannin County is

slated to begin the week of May 4.

eastbound SH 56 entrance ramp leading onto US 82 eastbound, and route all traffic to the current intersection with US 82. Work to overlay a new pavement surface and restripe the roadway will begin during the week of May 4, officials said. At the same time, signs will be placed along the roadway to alert motorists to the change.

On May 8, workers will close the eastbound ramp to traffic. On May 11, workers will begin removing the old pavement on the ramp. All of the planned work is weather dependent, officials noted.

Motorists are reminded that all SH 56 traffic will be required to stop at the intersection with US 82, and yield to oncoming traffic.

Those who frequently travel in this area are asked to pay special attention to all barricades, traffic controls and signs, and to reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems.

Not knowing where to turn to locate a sheep farm and a pig farm, I reached out to my brother, John Vick, District Director to Senator Bob Hall. John reached out to his community and within minutes he introduced me to a sheep farmer and 20-year veteran, Jack Champion.

Jack and Donna Champion live on 27 acres in Leonard, Texas. After speaking with Mr. Champion about his sheep farm we packed up the car for the 90-minute drive and left the house as a family of four after 26 days. We pretended we were on a school bus going on a field trip while singing Wheels on the Bus, playing eye-spy, and adding the Moo’sm and Naaa’s as we passed by farm animals.

It was a breath of fresh air as we hit the bumpy rural roads.

As we parked on Mr. Champion’s Trinity Ranch and fitted the four of us with masks, we received a warm welcome from Mr. Champion without the good ol’ Texas handshake in order to

maintain the social distance.

The first sheep we got to meet was an ewe that had twin lambs the night before our visit! It was an amazing experience for the girls to be able to observe and talk about the sheep that we had been researching this week. We had the opportunity to talk to Mr. Champion about sheep farming and his personal life to what lead him to sheep farming.

After we saw the rest of the sheep flock, Mr. Champion took us on a tour of his property and the girls got to meet the sheepdog, Duke, and the family dog, Hank. And the learning didn’t stop there! We hunted for animal tracks, looked for fish in his pond, saw the dew-

berries that naturally grow used to make jam, their vegetable garden, water tanks, and a Mosasaur Skull found on the property! Mr. Champion also shared his rock and fossil collection with us. We were able to touch and hold dinosaur bones that were excavated right there.

With the girls’ pockets full of souvenir rocks, we said our thank-yous and goodbyes and headed back to Grand Prairie.

We are very thankful to my brother, John, and Mr. Champion for an amazing ‘field trip.’ It not only lifted our spirits from the pandemic but provided an opportunity to add to the girls’ distance learning, but also their life experience.

UNITY is in the blood of Fannin County. This has proven true from the sacrifices made by our county’s namesake and his men at Goliad, to the recovery efforts of last week’s tornados. While out surveying the destruction and providing homeowners with free aerial damage assessment photos, Mike and I were overwhelmed by the army of volunteers that came out to assist those that had lost everything. One neighbor we spoke to was brought to tears not because of her loss, but rather the comfort being provided by the nearly fifty people who had gathered to pick up the pieces. We ARE Fannin Strong!

In a recent article, I provided a “30,000 foot view” of what you can expect if I am elected Commissioner - Precinct One. To name just a few, it describes implementing a Quality Assurance program for all work done on our roadways, modernizing maintenance schedules, career/skill development training for our equipment operators, enhanced communication through a new website that I am developing, a Schedule of Operations found on that website alerting residents to upcoming maintenance, a printed Quarterly Newsletter, and the sharing of my direct cell number to reach me. Each of these improvements require little to no expenditure from our annual budget.

They are representative of the type of change in leadership-style and vision that I offer.

I’ve laid out plans to bring focus and immediate attention to our struggling budget. As taxpayers, we deserve to know where every single dollar we give is going, and what we are getting in return. I will be regularly providing a simplified analysis for all to see what monies are coming into PCT. 1 and how efficiently they are being spent. Examples would be materials expenditures, fuel/oil/maintenance costs, training of personnel, average cost per mile of road maintenance, and an overall view of payroll liabilities. When it comes to my own payroll, I commit to report directly to YOU every penny I am paid while serving as your County Commissioner.

I believe routine publishing of this budgetary information along with the other improvements that I’ve listed will serve as a “report card” of sorts. It allows you the employer an assessment tool to evaluate my team and our performance in delivery of services to you.

With Mother’s Day less than a week away and Father’s Day looming on the horizon, I feel that it is the appropriate time in my articles to give attention to the importance of the family.

Family life has its beginning in the Garden of Eden.

Happy Mother’s Day parents. God’s plan and pattern for peopling the human race was set in place. His design and desires have not changed. But even as the first family was assaulted by Satan so today’s family is being bombarded by the evil one in many different ways.

In the book by Jill Briscoe, “Fight for the Family” it is stated that the Christian concept of the family is under incredible attack in the area in which we live. The safeguards have been forgotten and the walls that were designed to protect us have fallen down. All that remains for too many families today are piles of rubble. God is not pleased nor should we

In the early years of my ministry, churches strived more fervently to strengthen the spiritual health of the family units that comprised her membership. Full weeks of emphasis such as “Focus on the Family”, “Christian Home Week”, and studies on family living were regulars on the church calendar.

I am concerned that we have grown slack in many areas, but I would like to remind us as mothers and fathers that it is our responsibility to so guard the home with our teaching and example that we can rebuild the walls that have fallen down.

COOKING IN FANNIN COUNTY

I’ve been smoking pork ribs a lot lately, and I usually use Grill Mates pork rub, but it’s getting almost impossible to find.

The last time I needed some, I ordered it online. This week’s recipe is for those who like to make their own rub. I may change to this recipe, since it’s ingredients are readily available.

This is another recipe that my cousin, Linda Morgan, sent me.

NEVER-FAIL RIB RUB ½ cup brown sugar ¼ cup paprika 1 tablespoon black pepper 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon chili powder ¾ tablespoon garlic powder ¾ tablespoon onion powder 1 teaspoon cayenne Combine all ingredients together and transfer to an airtight container. When ready to use, generously rub on to ribs and cook.

Commissioners Follow Governor’s Order to Reopen State

By Gabrielle DeMay The regular meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court was called to order Tuesday, April 28, 2020, at 9:02 a.m. via teleconference.

County Judge Randy Moore established quorum; all Commissioners were present. The invocation was given by Reverend Casey Rogers of the First Baptist Church of Honey Grove. The pledges were led by Major James Manis.

4 Judge Moore addressed the new Executive Orders from Governor Abbott in relation to the extension of the Fannin County Declaration of Disaster Proclamation for Covid-19.

He explained that these orders, GA-18, GA-19, and GA-20, supersede any orders from County governments. With Texas having the third most recovered Covid-19 cases in the U.S., Governor Abbott will use these orders and additional testing to begin reopening the state. Judge Moore explained that GA-18 is designed to gently reopen Texas businesses to combat the record-breaking unemployment numbers now reaching 1.6 million, and will replace GA-16, which expires April 30. GA-18 will go into effect May 1, 2020, and extends to retail, restaurants, movie theaters, and malls, allowing these businesses to provide services for up to 25% of their normal occupant capacity. Libraries and museums may also reopen following the 25% capacity rule, through hands-on activities and exhibits will be prohibited. Sole proprietors may also return to work. This order allows more freedom to churches, but Judge Moore reminded listeners to be cautious returning to church, as congregations often have a high concentration of members who are 65 years old or older or are in other ways

susceptible to the Covid-19 virus. GA-18 also allows for outdoor sports consisting of four or fewer players; examples include tennis or golf. Spectators of these sports must maintain proper social distancing practices. All licensed health care workers not already listed as essential, such as dentists, are cleared to return to work, and child care assistance will be made more available. The next phase, which the Governor plans to execute in two weeks, will include the delayed opening of bars, gyms, salons, and barbershops. Though there is a stipulation allowing counties with fewer than 5 Covid-19 cases to reopen to 50% capacity, Fannin County’s current count of 17 positive cases excludes it from this opportunity. Judge Moore introduced Jerry Huffman, Fannin County Emergency Management Coordinator, to speak on his coordination with the Texas Guard’s mobile Covid-19 testing initiative. The Texas Guard, as part of the Governor’s plan to increase Covid-19 testing across the state, has enlisted 25 teams to administer free tests to the public. Mr. Huffman explained the Texas Guard will only test 60 Fannin County residents, which will be by appointment only, on Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at the Multi-Purpose Complex in Bonham. The target population to be tested will consist of first responders, health care workers, and city and county employees. Anyone wishing to be tested must first call the provided number, where they will answer medical questions to determine if they qualify to be tested. They will then be given an appointment time. County officials expect more follow-up testing to become available to the general population soon. Judge Moore noted that GA-19 changed hos-

pital capacities reserved for Covid-19 patients from 25% to 15% and that GA-20 removed the mandatory 2-week quarantine on people traveling to Louisiana. A motion was made to edit the Fannin County Declaration of Disaster Proclamation for Covid-19 to include GA-15, GA-18, GA-19, and GA-20, and to extend the Proclamation until Tuesday, May 5, 2020.

Motion passed.

5 A motion to edit the Covid-19 Response and Continuity of Operations Plan for Fannin County to replace adherence to Executive Order GA-16 with GA-15, GA-18, GA-19, and GA-20 passed. This plan will extend with renewed dates until May 5, 2020.

6 The minutes from 02/18/2020 were considered and approved.

7 Commissioner Jerry Magness requested approval for the purchase of a 2009 Used Wheel Loader, John Deere 544K, for $95,000 for the material yard for Precinct 3. The purchase was approved.

8 Judge Moore introduced County Auditor Alicia Whipple to speak about the approval of a Resolution to accept grant funding from the Office of the Governor for Fannin County from the Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding Program. Auditor Whipple explained that Grant # 4145401 is being funded through TECOG for $274,000, to be distributed to Fannin County, Grayson County, and Cooke County and their municipalities. It is a 12-month grant, and Fannin County would like to apply for funds to cover PPE, computers, laptops, and overtime incurred during the pandemic, all of which totals approximately $80,000. Auditor Whipple would like to have all the signatures by the end of the day.

A motion was made to approve

and sign the Resolution to accept grant funding. Motion passed.

12 At 11:08 a.m. Judge Moore resumed the regular session of the Commissioners Court.

Judge Moore commented that he and the Commissioners spoke with Mike Rickman and Billy George about the new lake and construction.

13 Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Whitlock commended the neighbors and farmers in areas affected by the tornadoes Friday night for helping to clear the roads, and extended the invitation to anyone who would like free firewood to join his teams as they continue to clear away the damage from fallen trees.

Commissioner Self thanked listeners and NTMWD and hopes everyone stays safe as the state reopens. Commissioner Magness thanked the Telephone Volunteer Fire Department and the Fannin County Electric Co-op, as well as other local volunteers, for their hard work clearing brush after the tornadoes. He thanked his Precinct 3 employees and appreciated the community coming together to help their neighbors with house and property damage. Commissioner Magness suggested instituting a protocol for dispatchers to notify the Commissioners whose precincts have been affected by a natural disaster such as tornadoes in the future. Commissioner Lackey was thankful no one was seriously hurt or killed in the tornadoes. He shared his concern for the loosening restrictions around Covid-19, and asked listeners to show restraint, keep their distance, and be respectful of people still taking steps

to protect themselves against the virus. Judge Moore agreed with Commissioner Lackey’s suggestion to show restraint and reminded listeners that Covid-19 is still a threat, using as an example a nursing home in Lamar County, which over the weekend added nearly fifty new cases to the register. He thanked the Texas Department of Emergency Management, Governor Abbott, Representative Smith, Jerry Huffman, and the Bonham Chamber of Commerce for helping set up the mobile Covid-19 testing. Judge Moore echoed Commissioner Magness’s suggestion about informing Commissioners about disasters and providing better channels for communication when cell service is unreliable.

He appreciated the Commissioners, county crews, electric departments, and neighbors coming together to help out after the tornadoes.

The meeting adjourned at 11:23 a.m.

National Volunteer Week Salutes Volunteers in Fannin County

News Release - Each year, thousands of volunteers through associated with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, donate their time and energy to make their communities a better place to live. These volunteers will be among the millions across the country who will be spotlighted during the 46th anniversary of National Volunteer Week, April 19-25, 2020.

Currently, about 63 million Americans volunteer about 8 billion hours of their time, talent, and effort to improve and strengthen their communities.

With the Value of Volunteer Time ($25.43 per hour), these Americans are contributing approximately $203.4 billion to our nation through nonprofit or-

ganizations of all types. In 2019, 93,621 Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Volunteers contributed 5,477,611 hours of service valued at $139,295,650.

In Fannin County, 760 volunteers contributed 760 hours valued at $285,070.30.

Extension programs relies heavily on volunteers from 4-H and Youth Development, Master Gardener program, Master Naturalist program, Master Wellness program, Leadership Advisory Board, Program Area Committees, and various coalitions.

Fannin County 4-H adult and youth volunteers contributed countless hours in various capacities in 2019. Over 20 volunteers served as club leaders,

project leaders, committee members, advisory board members and continue to work with the program today. Volunteers spend numerous hours working on tasks, such as helping organize events at the county fair, helping children with 4-H projects, or leading a project to serve the community.

Master Wellness Volunteers helps Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expand the reach of its health and nutrition programs through Master Wellness Volunteers. Master Wellness Volunteers receive 40 hours of education related to health, nutrition, food safety, healthy food preparation, public speaking and much more.

In return, volunteers are asked

to give 40 hours of volunteer service to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

The volunteer opportunities are diverse-giving presentations for local community groups, assisting with healthy cooking demonstrations, distributing information at health fairs, working with schools and after school programs and data entry. Previous health or wellness training is not required but an interest in living healthfully and helping others do the same.

In 2019, Master Wellness Volunteers provided 8,689 hours of service reaching 56,176 Texans. In Fannin County in 2019, Master Wellness Volunteers reached 252 and served over 50 hours. To support Agriculture and Natural Resources

education in Fannin County, the Fannin County Master Gardeners and Bois D’ Arc Master Naturalist spend time educating and conducting workshops to support the citizens of Fannin County. The Fannin County Master Gardeners assist with educating the public in the area of home horticulture. Many of the questions they assist with throughout the year include lawns, landscape, landscape trees, insects, gardens, fruit production, and beautification projects that support Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. The Bois D’ Arc Master Naturalist assist with education of wildlife, natural resources, insects, snakes, native plants, and birds Both master volunteer organizations contribute many hours

to assist the citizens of Fannin County gain knowledge in their respective areas. With slightly over 30 volunteers in 2019, Master Volunteers supporting Agriculture and Natural Resources education in Fannin County served an average of 50 hours per volunteer, educating slightly over 2,000 people!

Program volunteers are instrumental in carrying out the mission of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Volunteers are involved in every aspect of the Extension Service, including determining the needs of local residents, planning and implementing programs to address these needs, securing resources, and evaluating programs. Each of these services is run strictly on donations and volunteers, and the occasional grant.

With wide layoffs and company closures fighting the spread of Covid-19, many restaurants and small businesses temporarily or permanently shut down, and extra mouths to feed at home, more families are left struggling than ever before.

Local food pantries are the front line against domestic hunger. Brenda Jeter, acting Facility Manager for Fannin County Community Ministries (FCCM), reports already seeing an influx of new families due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Wednesday, April 8 at the FCCM facility saw 75 families in four hours, many with a provider now out of work or children

who can no longer rely on two meals at school, as well as increasing numbers of senior citizens.

What can you do to help?

With so many businesses reducing hours or closing their doors, and every child schooling from home, it may seem that the world has come to a standstill. But there is still work that can be done. Now is the perfect time for you and your family to volunteer at your local food pantry. These essential, non-profit businesses are taking steps to prevent the spread of Covid-19 while ensuring their services reach those in need. Volunteer workers are wearing masks and gloves, and pantries like Wolfe City and Manna House are serving the public drive-thru style in open parking lots to minimize the spread of germs. Volunteers hesitant to come into contact with the public can come on preparation days to help unload trucks or pack boxes.

And donations are always welcome: Joann Dyer, President of the Community Food Pantry at Honey Grove, explained it was difficult to buy food in bulk with many stores now limiting quantities to prevent panic-buying.

While this retail practice is a safety measure for most consumers, it provides an unforeseen challenge for food pantries that shop for themselves. You can do your part by shopping for what each pantry needs most. Covid-19 is giving so many citizens the gift of time—make yours meaningful by bringing a smile to your neighbor’s face, and food to a family’s home. dent who spent 35 days in the hospital’s dedicated COVID-19 unit, with 22 of those days spent on a ventilator. Mr. Babahhmadi was the first person to test positive for COVID-19 in Grayson County. During his hospital stay, Mr. Babahhmadi was treated by a team of providers that included intensivists, infectious disease specialists, respiratory therapists and critical care nurses. We are pleased to announce that he has recovered from COVID-19 and his rehabilitation will continue at the TMC Reba McEntire Center for Rehabilitation. Mr. Babahhmadi’s release was a welcome site to hospital staff as they cheered and clapped for him during his release. He was also reunited with his wife Vicki Eisenburg, a former TMC patient who has also recovered from COVID-19.

Texoma Medical Center wants to share that it remains diligent in its protection of patients and staff, and is prepared to care for all medical, surgical and emergent needs in the same safe environment prior to the pandemic. Please remember that TMC’s Emergency Departments are available to evaluate and care for patients safely 24/7. TMC plans to continue door screenings at all facility entrances, and will keep current visitation guidelines in effect until no longer deemed necessary.

Nicole Brown is CASA Advocate of the Quarter

Press Release - Nicole Brown has been named the CASA Advocate of the Quarter. She became a CASA volunteer in July 2018 because she wanted to be a constant in a child’s life.

“I want to help break the cycle of child abuse and neglect,” said Brown. “Children in care need an individual to stand up for them and be their voice. Being a volunteer means I will make a positive impact on a child’s life whether it be to show them that there is good in this world or it may be that I am their positive role model.”

Brown has advocated for 7 children over the last two years. “There has not been a situation that Nicole has

not tackled head on,” said Amanda McDonald, CASA Program Director. “She is creative in her advocacy, always keeping the kids’ best interest at heart. While maintaining professionalism, she is still able to form long lasting relationships with the children and families she serves.”

Brown is a first and second grade teacher at Dodd City Elementary. She has been teaching for 15 years.

“Teaching is a passion of mine,” said Brown. “Just like being a CASA volunteer, I strive every day at school to be a positive role model for my students because we do not know what children are going through at home.”

Brown has one son named Heath. He keeps her busy with all his sporting activities. Her boyfriend, Dale is a coach at Denison High School. “When I’m not at Heath’s games, you can find me supporting Dale and his son Trey!” said Brown. She also enjoys running and hanging out with friends.

Spring Breaking the Law A group of spring breakers celebrating their time off at a house in Concan decided to begin spring turkey season a little early. One March morning, a Uvalde County game warden was contacted by an individual who had seen several boys use turkey calls to call up a gobbler. One of the boys killed the turkey and retrieved it from the brush. The warden, along with a Real County game warden, arrived at the house and contacted the boys. When asked about the turkey, the guilty party readily cooperated, admitted what he had done and showed wardens where he had hidden the bird.

Cooper GOOD. Water clear; 71 degrees; 0.00’. Largemouth bass are good on Texas rigged plastic worms and creatures, crankbaits, and plastic frogs in 10’ or less.

The white bass are good in 20-35’ with slabs, jigs, and jigging spoons. Catfish are good on live and cut bait in 8-16’.

Lavon GOOD. Water stained; 72 degrees: 0.19 high. Crappie are good on minnows fishing 10-20’ over brush piles and bridges. White bass are excellent in the 25-40’ with jigs and slabs.

Look for birds diving over feeding schools of white bass. Black bass are good on crankbaits, top waters, plastic lizards, and frogs in 4-12’. Catfish are good on prepared baits and live bait in 10-20’.

Tawakoni EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 65 degrees; 0.28’ high. Catfish are excellent on live bait and cut bait

6-18’. Largemouth bass are good on spinnerbaits, plastic worms, and square billed crankbaits in 6-12’. White bass and hybrid stripers are excellent on swimbaits and slabs. Watch for diving birds to mark feeding schools or use sonar to locate fish feeding in schools of bait over deeper points, creek beds, and humps in the main lake. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs around brush piles, docks, and marinas.

Texoma EXCELLENT. Water stained; 68 degrees; 0.04’ low. Striped bass and white bass are excellent on live bait. Diving birds are marking feeding schools throughout the lake. Largemouth bass are excellent fishing plastic creatures, swimbaits, and crankbaits in 6-14’. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs by boathouses, marinas and brush piles 8-15’.

Catfish are excellent on cut bait and minnows in 8-18’.

L-3 Communications Integrated Systems L.P., Greenville, in Hunt County, Texas, an airstrip and aircraft restoration facility, has applied to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for a permit /compliance plan renewal with major amendment for the continued post-closure care and groundwater corrective action at the North Lagoon Area (RCRA Landfill), and to incorporate changes to the corrective action program for the Aircraft Preparation Area (AOC), Building 117 Alleyway (AOC), and Burn Pit Area (SWMU). The established PMZ is a response objective that requires L-3 to control and prevent the use of, and exposure to groundwater within the proposed PMZ. CECIL AUDRY KYLE

RUFUS WALTER ALLEN, JR. 12-12-1936 to 04-13-2020

Rufus “Sonny” Walter Allen, Jr., 83, of Garland, TX, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2020. He was born on December 12, 1936, to Rufus and Tillie Allen.

He was raised in Allen’s Chapel Community near Honey Grove, TX and graduated from Honey Grove High School in 1955.

Rufus served his country in the National Guard starting in December 1954 and then was called to serve the US Army at Fort Polk, LA. Rufus was a member of the 117th Medical Division from October 1961 to August 1962 when he was honorably discharged. While serving his great nation Rufus took Carole Finley’s hand in marriage on October 4, 1958. Rufus and Carole celebrated 61 beautiful years together before he was called home. Rufus worked for the U.S. Postal Service from October 1962 to January 1999 and retired after 36 years of employment. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Garland, Texas.

Rufus is preceded in death by both parents and sisters Alice Crabtree and Betty Turner. Rufus is survived by his wife Carole, his children Brent (Mary Ann) Allen, Kimberly (Baylis) Laramore, Jason (Denise) Allen, and granddaughters Allison and Emily Laramore, Ashley, Jessica and Leah Allen.

Rufus enjoyed traveling all over the central and eastern US states. Rufus had a special talent in creating beautiful furniture, being a “Mr. Fix It” for anything from mechanical work, welding, plumbing, and electrical and had a green thumb for gardening. Rufus could name any car’s make, model and year at a glance and was the best armchair quarterback for his favorite football team the Dallas Cowboys. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife and being ‘Paw Paw’ to his five granddaughters A graveside service and burial were held at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, TX.

Georgia Jeanette Duncan passed away at her home in Paris, Texas on March 30, 2020.

Mrs. Duncan was born on November 23, 1941 in Honey Grove, Texas to Georgia Kate Paul Luttrell and John (Hoss) William Luttrell.

She attended schools in Honey Grove and was a graduate of Ladonia High School.

Jeanette married Robert Earl Duncan on December 14, 1957, and they had four children.

She was a homemaker, a bank teller and a legal secretary for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice until her retirement to Paris. There, she continued her most important role as a dedicated and loving mother to her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by Robert Duncan, her children Robbie Duncan Terry and husband Ritchey, Dana Lynn Duncan, fiancé Stephen Long and his children Kaleb and Abby and Joe Daryl Duncan; grandchildren Natalie Blair Noble, Emily Paige Noble and fiancé Matthew McGaugh, Samuel Duncan Hudgins, Seth Daniel Hudgins, Alexandra Nicole Duncan, and Robert Owen Duncan; siblings Paula Espurvoa and husband David, Sayrah Vincent and husband Randell, and William (Speedy) Luttrell and wife Cindy, and several adored nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son Robert Mitchell Duncan, her parents, her mother and father in law, Jeanette and Albert Duncan, and sister and brother in law Billie and Robert (Bob) Joyner.

A private graveside service was held on Saturday, April 4th at 2 o’clock at the Ladonia Cemetery conducted by Bill Coleman, a dear family friend.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home, Paris, Texas.

The family requests memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Ladonia or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

His service included two tours to Vietnam. Cecil attended West Shady Grove Baptist Church in Blue Ridge, Texas. He enjoyed collecting and restoring antique cars. Cecil is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Charlotte Andrea Kyle, brother, Vanden Kyle, and sister, Marita Jean Nolen.

Memorial service for William Robert”Bill” Brost was held March, 7, 2020 at Calvary Baptist Church with Brother Lynn Holly officiating.

Billl was born on April 18, 1978 in Dallas Texas and died on February 10th 2020 in Ada Oklahoma where he presently lived. Bill was the son of Kurt and Nancy Elliott and grandson of Ken and Rebecca Elliott of Bonham, Texas. Bill attended Bonham High School, Grayson County Community College and Lincoln Tech in Dallas where he studied auto mechanics.

He was a father to 5 daughters, a brother, a son and a friend. Bill was survived by 5 daughters, Caitlin Alexis( Steele ) Robinson and husband Austin Robinson and grandson Greyson Cole Robinson, Alexia Michelle Elliott, Michelle Dawn Elliott, Marie Ann Elliott all live in Bonham and Isabella Marie Brost who lives in the Phillipines with her mother Romella Brost. A brother Phillip Brost and Tabitha Brost and nephew Maximillon Brost who live in Bonham . Many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bill was preceeded in death by his father Michael Scott Brost and Grandparents Bob and Penny Brost of Dallas Texas.

Bill liked to play the guitar and work on cars. He liked riding motorcycles too. He loved his children.

However, butterflies are picky in choosing which plants they use for feeding, egg-laying, and resting. Nectar plants for adults can be different than the host plants needed by the larva. Host plants for caterpillars are specific to the insect species and the region.

Butterflies are guided to the nectar by colors and patterns.

Choose flowers with bright colors like pink, orange, yellow, white and purple. Some butterfly species cannot see red, and not all brightly colored flowers have nectar.

Choose fragrant flowers to attract butterflies. Flowers with large petals or composites such as zinnias and daisies provide easy landing for butterflies. Realize host plants for larvae will look ragged as the caterpillars eat them. Don’t use insecticides or pesticides in your butterfly garden.

Essential planning guidelines: •Determine the butterfly species in your region. Select native plants that will attract these species.

•Be mindful to give your visitors plenty of sun, yet also provide protection from wind and rain.

•Ensure that both diverse adult nectar plants and a variety of caterpillar host plants will be present in your garden.

Drug Raid in Ladonia

Released by Lt. Franklin L. Deater On Monday 04/27/2020 at approximately 1050 hours, after an open investigation between the Bonham PD Narcotics and FCSO Narcotics Units, A warrant was issued for 305 Park Street in Ladonia, Texas.

A large bright-yellow softball-shaped monument has been in place in Ector within the Charles Bellows Memorial Park near the softball field since early April, commemorating the Lady Eagles’ Class 1A state runner-up softball team in 2018.

By Rich Hilliard ECTOR -- Scott Johnson has fond memories of a commemorative sign once constructed in his hometown of Ector.

The sign -- hand-made, constructed of plywood and painted -- acknowledged a regional basketball tournament advance in 1986 of which he was a part.

“I thought it was cool,” said the Ector alum and current school board member.

He had also seen smokers -- the outdoor cooking units -made out of objects originally purposed for other uses.

Merging those memories, Johnson had an idea -- a unique way to commemorate the 2018 Class 1A softball state runnerup Lady Eagles at their home field. It would be in addition to the banner recognizing them already in Ector Independent School District’s Billie Finnell Gymnasium.

The finished product: A large bright-yellow softball-shaped monument -- previously, a pro-

pane tank -- placed in April in Ector within the Charles Bellows Memorial Park which includes the softball and baseball diamonds used by the school.

Situated outside the softball field behind the covered and elevated scoreboard operator’s/ media table behind home plate, the sphere has been placed on a home-plate-shaped concrete pad made by Johnson.

“It is very unique and very cool. It looks even better in person,” said Ector softball manager Jayson Adams. “I love that the base it’s sitting on is shaped like the plate.”

The roster on the ‘softball’ includes Scott Johnson’s daughter, Montana: the starting third baseman that season, one of the TGCA all-state selections and a 2018 Ector graduate.

“My daughter had played softball for her whole life, including travel ball, with 4-5 members on the team,” said Johnson. “I thought [the monument] would be a good thing to do.”

He approached Ector superintendent Gary Bohannon a few months ago with the idea and received approval to make the memorial.

“I did the ‘leg work’ it took to do this...,” said Johnson, “but the school paid for all of it.”

Though the Lady Eagles didn’t get a chance this spring to make another run at reaching the 1A state softball tournament -- like all spring high school athletes, their season cut short, barely into district play for softball and baseball players, by the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) -- the monument will still be a reminder of that unprecedented season for Ector.

Hannah Easley served as the starting catcher that 2018 season as a sophomore, equated another of the TGCA all-state selections listed on the monument and will graduate this spring from Ector.

The Fannin SWCD is a member of the National Association of Conservation Districts, which oversees the Steward-

ship Week program. The Fannin SWCD was organized on June 29, 1940.The national and local districts were established to encourage resource conservation across the nation. The Fannin SWCD will assist and encourage each land occupant to utilize each acre of land so as to protect and conserve it along with the resources of water and air for the present and future generations.

There are 217 SWCD’s across Texas, they are all actively involved in soil and water conservation activities such as operation and maintenance of flood control structures, sponsoring workshops, seminars, producer field days and sponsoring essay and poster contests for all the youth of their respective districts or counties and honoring outstanding conservation producers.

Press Release - Fannin Soil & Water Conservation District #520 has partnered with the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, Association of Texas Soil & Water Conservation Districts, Texas Wildlife Association, and Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association to highlight Soil and Water Stewardship Week and the importance of voluntary land stewardship in Texas. The statewide campaign is April 26 through May 3, 2020, and the focus this year is “Where Would We BEE Without Pollinators?”

According to the Kansas Rural Center, pollinators and other beneficial insects are losing ground worldwide. Currently, 25 percent of North American bee species are at risk of extinction.

Why is this important? To begin with, pollination is one of the most fundamental processes sustaining agriculture and natural ecosystems, and most native plants in North America require pollination by insects.

Furthermore, pollinators are essential for productive agricultural ecosystems, such as row crop production and agroforestry, and they ensure the production of fruit and seeds in many crops, grasses, and timber. Likewise, pollinators play a significant role in natural rangeland ecosystems by helping to keep plant communities healthy and reproducing.

It is quite simple. We need pollinators to support rangelands for our wildlife and livestock, to keep our forests productive, and to keep the agricultural crops that we use every day growing.

The Dust Bowl was a wake-up call in the early 1930s that led to the formation of local Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) in Texas. Since then, landowners have worked with SWCDs to get voluntary conservation practices on the ground. The decreasing bee population in Texas and the United States is today’s

wake-up call. We need pollinators, and we also need good stewards that will implement pollinator-friendly conservation practices to protect and preserve the natural resources of Texas.

The good news is that we know the way. Proper land stewardship always makes the difference. Don’t BEE afraid of conservation, because if we lose pollinators, we do not have a Plan BEE.
