Knowing When To Say “No!”
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
Peter wrote to Christians and said to add to your “knowledge temperance” (2 Peter 1:6). Temperance is saying “NO” to ungodly things. As Christians grow, we are to be “temperate” and know when to say “NO” (Titus 2:2).
When Jesus was in “the wilderness to be tempted of the devil” (Matthew 4:1), he told the devil “NO”. Peter warned for us to “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). We are reminded, that before we can tell the devil, “NO”, we must tell God, “YES”. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Paul wrote that we cannot let “Satan get an advantage of us” and that “we are not ignorant of his devices” (2 Corinthians 2:11). The Lord told Peter, “Satan hath desired to have you” (Luke 22:31).

The Christians must say “NO” to each temptation to make the wrong choice. God teaches us that every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and seduced” (James 1:14). Saying “NO” to our temptations should be on our minds to the point that we are prayful about it; Jesus said “Pray that ye enter not into temptation” (Luke 22:40). There is a way to say “NO” to temptations and “God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). God will help us, because the “Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations” (2 Peter 2:9). Jesus gave the great example of how to say “NO” to temptation by saying “It is written” (Matthew 4:4,7,10).

Christians have to say “NO” to ourselves. Jesus said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). If we “through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, we shall live” (Romans 8:13). We must say “YES” to God and “NO” to ourselves. Christians are not to “live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God” (1 Peter 4:2)

While in graduate school, I worked summers and part-time in a mobile home factory. Late one shift, I got something in one of my eyes. On my way to punch out, I stopped by the water fountain and tried to wash the speck out, but to no avail. Still seeing clearly, I drove home where Beth, my wife and Registered Nurse, also failed to help remove it. We thought the speck had washed out and I was feeling only residual irritation. I showered and changed, then we continued with our plans, driving an hour to my hometown to have dinner with my parents. By the time we got there, we knew the speck was still there, and it had gone from annoying to irritating. By the time we finished dinner, I was in pain, my eye was red and bloodshot, and I could hardly see from it. Seeking professional help, we went to the emergency room of the small rural hospital. After a short wait in an exam room, in walks Dr. Bryant. Dr. Bryant had provided my family’s healthcare since my childhood, and he was old then. Now, fifteen years later, he was really old. He laid me back on the exam table, turned on the overhead spotlights, and examined my eye closely. He finally said, “There it is, it’s a piece of metal, let’s get that out.”

When he said “metal,” my level of nervousness immediately increased. I could hear him at the counter getting things ready, opening packaging and putting on surgical gloves. When he turned back to me, he held my eyelids open with one hand and said “Now don’t move.” The next thing I saw was his other hand coming at my eye holding a syringe! When someone with a razor-sharp object is working on your eye, you DON’T MOVE! What came next was one of the most terrifying times of my life. (It was probably no more than a minute, but it seemed like hours to me.) I could feel and hear Dr. Bryant picking at the speck of embedded metal with the tip of the syringe. It took several attempts but finally I heard him say that he got it. He put some drops in the eye and bandaged it, and within a few days all was back to normal.
I have revisited this experience several times over the years; each time I heard a sermon or a lesson on hypocrisy. Without fail, the lesson would include the parable Jesus told in Matthew 7:3-4. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye’, when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?” (NIV). In this parable, both the speck of sawdust and the plank represent sin in our lives. I believe it was no accident that Jesus chose the speck-in-the-eye example over some other disabling malady, such as a thorn in the foot. Arguably, sight is the most precious of our five senses. In a web search, I found several sources ranking the five senses in order of priority, and in each of these rankings, sight was deemed most important.
If I had decided to leave the speck in place and not to seek professional help, I would have eventually lost sight in that eye. The sliver of metal would have caused additional damage, and an infection would have eventually set in. Fortunately, my body, through the pain I felt, told me to get the problem fixed. It is always important that we respond quickly when something is threatening our personal well-being.
But it is even more important that we respond quickly when something is threatening our salvation, and sin does threaten our salvation. A sin, even one we might consider small, could lead us to eternal damnation. The speck in my eye started as a minor annoyance, but it quickly grew into a controlling force and a real threat to my eyesight. Sin, even a small one, is a threat to our eternal lives and, if left unaddressed, will lead to more sin. Our guilty conscience tells us to remedy the sinful condition.
Getting a speck in the eye is not an uncommon occurrence, usually easily remedied with washing. Most are resolved naturally with the eye’s normal tears washing it out; others may require an eyewash. And rarely, as in my case, professional help may be needed. Sin is also remedied by washing.

First, our sins are washed away by the blood of Christ when we are baptized into him (Acts 2:38). But what about sins that we may commit after baptism? Those, too, are washed away provided we confess and repent of the sins (1 John 1:5-10). Specifically, verse 9 of this passage reads “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (KJV)
Just as we will not ignore a speck in our eye, we must not ignore the sin in our lives.

EGGPLANT PARMESAN CASSEROLE
This cheesy, saucy eggplant casserole was a sophisticated way to serve vegetables in the '70s, and it still holds up beautifully today. What I like most about this version is that you can skip the frying step that traditional eggplant parm requires—just layer everything right in the dish and let the oven do the work. The secret to avoiding watery casserole is salting your eggplant slices first and letting them sit for about 20 minutes to draw out excess moisture. Pat them dry before layering, and you'll have a
perfectly textured dish every time.
Ingredients
2 lg. eggplants sliced into ½" rounds
2 tsp. salt
3 c. marinara sauce
2 c. shredded mozzarella cheese
1 c. grated Parmesan cheese
2 lg. eggs, beaten 1 ½ c. Italian breadcrumbs
1 tsp. dried basil & 1 tsp. dried oregano
3 tbsp. olive oil
Instructions Preheat oven to 375° and grease a 9 x 13 baking dish. Sprinkle eggplant slices with
salt. Let sit for 20 minutes. Pat dry with paper towels. Dip eggplant slices in beaten eggs. Coat with seasoned bread crumbs. Mix crumbs with basil and oregano. Spread 1 cup marinara in dish. Layer half of the eggplant slices. Top with 1 cup marinara sauce. Add 1 cup mozzarella cheese. Add ½ cup Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers with remaining ingredients. Drizzle olive oil over the top. Cover the dish with foil. Bake covered for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake 15 minutes more. Bake until cheese is golden bubbly. This makes fantastic leftovers tooSome say it tastes better the next day.

Some didn’t print. Years ago gender wasn’t a required piece of information on the registration forms so we

Game Warden Field Notes
Float On As a Bell County game warden was wrapping up his day, he responded to a call on Belton Lake in regard to a capsized kayak with a female occupant who was unable to get back in and continued to cling to the boat as she drifted farther from the shoreline. The warden arrived to meet the local fire department as they were transporting one male and one female, still wearing the personal floatation devices (PFDs), and kayaks back to shore. The male subject made the comment to EMS that he had always been made fun of for wearing his PFD while kayaking but noted that wearing them undoubtedly saved two lives that evening. You Must be This Tall to Drive Denton County game wardens patrolling Lake Lewisville noticed a boat with an adult male driving and a child as his passenger. Minutes later, they noticed the same boat entering a local marina but with the child operating the boat. Upon conducting a water safety inspection and discussing a malfunctioning navigational light with the adult, one of the wardens noticed the smell of alcohol and numerous cues that he was impaired. Since the adult had just been observed operating the boat only a few minutes earlier, he was arrested for Boating While Intoxicated.
While patrolling around Lake Somerville, a Washington County game warden noticed a vehicle parked in the road with its flashers on. When the warden approached the vehicle, he noticed that the subject inside had fallen asleep. Upon waking the person, the warden asked him to step out of the vehicle, revealing a meth pipe in plain view. The subject was then detained, and a search was performed on the vehicle. The search turned up almost 6 grams of suspected meth, tablets of suspected Xanax and marijuana, along with multiple forms of paraphernalia. The subject was taken into custody and multiple citations were issued.
Hope to see you there!! USDA is an equal opportunity provider.

God’s Garden: God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Mona Caldwell
Mona Caldwell was the kind of person who made everyone feel at home. She carried warmth, wisdom, unwavering faith, and fierce love into every room she entered. Her life was a beautiful reflection of grace, strength, courage, kindness, and deep devotion to the people she loved.
Mona was born on June 3, 1947, in Texarkana, Arkansas, and grew up in Texarkana and Bonham. She married the love of her life, Mike Caldwell, on August 30, 1969, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span 57 years of marriage. Their love story became the foundation of a family filled with laughter, traditions, faith, and pure love. Together they raised three children, Christian Caldwell, Joey Caldwell, and Michelle Whatley. Along the way, Mona gained two daughters-in-law, Stacy Caldwell and Shannon Caldwell, and a son-in-law, Gabe Whatley, all of whom she loved deeply as part of her family. Mona’s greatest pride and joy was her family, especially her beloved grandchildren, Alex Caldwell, Jonah Caldwell, Sean Caldwell, Emma Whatley, Kate Whatley, Hailey Caldwell, and Jackson Caldwell. They were truly the light of her world, and she celebrated each of them fully with endless encouragement, love, prayers, and unwavering belief in who they were becoming. Mona had a rare gift for making people feel seen. Quiet yet deeply present, she was fiercely loyal, a thoughtful listener, and a trusted holder of both stories and secrets. People felt safe with her. She carried others’ burdens gently, offered steady support, and had a remarkable way of making people feel heard, valued, and understood. Her presence brought comfort, calm, and reassurance to so many throughout her life. She connected deeply with others through heartfelt conversations, thoughtful texts, handwritten notes, and her constant willingness to show up when someone needed encouragement or support.
She was passionate about people and their stories and became deeply involved in politics and advocacy during the 1980s and 1990s, courageously standing up for others and using her voice to serve her community. Her faith was the anchor of her life. Raised Lutheran and later becoming Episcopalian, Mona lived her faith daily through compassion, prayer, generosity, and service. She was a fierce prayer warrior who faithfully lifted others up in both joyful and difficult seasons.
Mona found beauty in creating a welcoming home. Throughout her life, she built homes and communities in all the places life took her, always creating spaces filled with warmth, faith, laughter, and belonging. She loved cooking for family and friends, especially tapping into her beloved Sicilian roots through her famous Sunday pasta gravy and meatballs, baking fresh breads, quilting beautiful baby blankets, renovating spaces, and creating traditions that would live on for generations. Family holidays were sacred to her. Her children and grandchildren will forever cherish making “Tanta Luci’s” at Christmas and gathering together to read The Night Before Christmas each year, traditions she transformed into treasured memories through her love and intentionality.
She was an avid reader, gifted writer, and true wordsmith. Books were both her refuge and her joy, and she had a remarkable ability to express love, comfort, and wisdom through words. She found wonder in words, music, and nature and often spoke of sensing the presence of the Holy Spirit in everyday moments, even while simply gazing out her window.

‘buckle up!’” said Camron’s mother, Priscilla Wolf.
“And it may seem I was on him about it all the time, but he still didn’t listen.”
Seat belts save lives, but only when worn In 2025, 965 people who died in traffic crashes on Texas roads were not buckled up. While that was a 10% decline from the previous year, which had 1,072 unbuckled fatalities, more lives could have been saved.
● In 2025, there were 6,307 traffic crashes in the Paris District, resulting in 98 fatalities and 387 serious injuries.
● In 2025, there were 83 traffic crashes in the Paris District in which unrestrained occupants sustained fatal or serious injuries. These crashes resulted in 19 fatalities and 71 serious injuries.

Executive Director Marc Williams said. “Whether you’re going just a few blocks or many miles, buckle your seat belt every time, day and night.” Increased enforcement
across Texas Studies show 1 in 10 Texans do not take the simple step of buckling up — that’s more than 3 million people. Law enforcement will be increasing patrols for two weeks starting May 18, watching out for people not wearing their seat belt. Texas law requires all drivers and passengers to buckle up or face fines and court costs up to $200. Children younger than 8-years-old must be in a child car seat or booster seat unless they’re taller than 4 feet 9 inches. If they aren’t properly secured, the driver faces fines up to $250 plus court costs. A campaign proven to save lives Click It or Ticket is one of the most effective traffic safety initiatives in history. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates the Texas campaign has saved more than 8,600 lives, prevented 157,000 serious injuries and resulted in $35 billion in economic savings since its launch in 2002. The Click It or Ticket campaign is an important part of TxDOT’s Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. initiative. Drive like a Texan is about embracing the pride, camaraderie and responsibility of being a Texan on the road. By making thoughtful choices, we can all help keep each other safe. BONHAM, Texas (KXII) - A former Fannin County records
clerk who pleaded guilty to stealing more than $237,000 from inmates will not serve prison time for her crimes.
Visiting Judge Duncan Thomas sentenced Krystal Wilson to 10 years probation and ordered her to repay every dollar over that time.
The district attorney’s office had pushed for 45 years behind bars, arguing Wilson’s role in public service demanded harsher punishment.
“We’re disappointed. We think the amount of money she took from the county, also her position of trust in the county warranted that she go to prison for several decades,” said Nathan Young, first assistant criminal attorney.
Wilson admitted in Wednesday’s sentencing that she spent the stolen money on personal expenses. Rent, car payments and trips to Florida were among the purchases. She said a gambling addiction drained her paychecks and left her turning to inmates’ funds to cover the rest.
The defense pointed to her clean record and argued she poses no physical threat.
“She was about to be a deputy... she needed to go to prison for this. When you have someone that’s in a position of public trust - someone that works for government - they should be held to a higher standard than someone else,” Young said.
If Wilson violates her probation, including failing to pay restitution, the judge can still sentence her to five years to life, according to Young.
“Like with any person that’s been in this position, you hope for societies sake, for the communities sake, that they don’t reoffend,” Young said.
