During the regular monthly meeting of the Bois D’ Arc Lake Zoning Commission on Thursday, May 21, 2020, a motion was made to rescind an earlier motion from the meeting on April 16 with regards to Lake Trail Estates. This motion to rescind came after a closed executive session, and Zoning Commission Board Member Bob McCraw noted that this change is due to misinformation in the original motion. Rescinding a motion requires a 2/3 vote, but a unanimous decision was reached. Judge Moore noted that the next step moving forward is to hold a public hearing about Lake Trail Estates, and a motion was made to confirm this and to set the date of the next Bois D’ Arc Lake Zoning Commission to immediately follow the hearing.

On Friday, May 15, 2020, a Bonham resident found what was believed to be a 1940’s artillery round shrapnel live bomb after digging up some trees and brush in Bonham. He called Bonham Police Department to come look at it. They called Plano Bomb Squad, they deactivated it.

Over this past year or so Louise and I have been volunteering with Feed Fannin and Fannin County Communities Ministries (Food Pantry). About 4 weeks ago while talking with Edwina Lane the topic of home style Victory Gardens came up and how Fannin County residents still produce large amounts of homegrown fruits and vegetables to the point of excess. That notion lead to how can that excess, “Manna” in short, be collected and given to those with the most need and not end up on the compost pile.

Working with the Food Pantry’s warehouse manager, Iris Paul, it has been determined that each Thursday from 1 June until 30 September the Manna from your gardens can be received for distribution to the ones in need.

Go to the library to claim your items. The library is currently open Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Without the fundraisers and donations, the library is unable to purchase books and materials or have the programs and services for you.

WHY THE CROSS? Near 25 years ago I was engaged in a philosophical discussion with a man. At that meeting of the minds he took me down many paths to “enlightenment”. At the end of our discussion, being the fundamental, baptized, sanctified girl that I was, I told him about Jesus. “Jesus” I said, “died on the cross and saved me from my sins and gave me eternal life.” Sounds good – right? Everyone in our country knows that. As I was patting myself on the back for being a “witness”, he said, “Do you really believe that?” (Evidently that was not the first time he had heard it) “Yes, I believe it!” I replied. To this pronouncement of faith, he simply said, “WHY?” He wasn’t impressed, and beyond that, I wasn’t impressive. I guess I had missed that verse to “….always be ready to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason for the Hope that is in you.” I Peter 3:15 So, WHY THE CROSS? Paul said in 1 Corinthians1:18, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” So maybe this guy was perishing, beyond hope – but maybe not. Paul also said, “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 1 Corinthians 9:22. I assumed too much and knew too little. How could I be a witness to something I hadn’t seen myself?

The Cross is a familiar symbol around the world. To most, it identifies the wearer or bearer of this Symbol as one who associates with Christianity. The Cross has been hammered and molded from precious metal, encrusted with jewels, plated and decorated; It has adorned graves, hung on walls, set on shelves, pasted on the back of vehicles, and even tattooed. It is a universal symbol of Hope, but WHY? We know the Cross that Jesus was crucified on was wood, made from a tree, rugged and unfinished, adorned only with blood. It was upright, strong enough to hold a full-grown man and a cruel instrument of torture and death that the Roman Empire used for the condemned under their jurisdiction. So, the Roman council on Capital Punishment must have voted to make this their weapon of choice against the worst criminals deserving of death, right? Wrong - the Romans used the method, but it was not their idea. It was God’s idea and started in the beginning – in the Garden of Eden, with another tree.

“Of this tree”, God said, “you shall not eat, for in the day you eat from it, you shall surely die.” Genesis 2:17. To ask, “Why would God do that?” is like asking the One who loves you why he/she would leave you just because of your unfaithfulness. But it happened, Adam partook of the fruit with the poisonous, genetically modified seed and passed it on to all his offspring, every human being that is born into this world. Now separated from God, cursed because of this seed of death growing in him, the first of God’s creation was cast from the presence of LIFE – God Himself.

But God had a plan – even then, before time began. (Rev 13:8) His Son would become a man but would not bear the poisonous seed of death from Adam. He would be born of a woman, with the seed of God as His Father. He would have the same frailties as man - He would become tired, hungry, suffer the same temptations that we all suffer, and would have to choose God over the glitter of this world, Most importantly, He would have to choose ridicule, punishment, death, and separation from God His Father, that there might be born a new human race, recreated and born by the undefiled Spirit of God. Jesus Christ would have to become cursed by God, judged by God, and condemned by God to recreate this new race.

“Christ redeemed [reclaimed] us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. For it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree [Cross].”

Galatians 3:13 Why the Cross? So we could be born-again with a pure seed in us. Because ´” Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin [die]; for His seed remains in him: and he cannot sin [die], because he is born of God.” I John 3:9 God gave His only Son for all mankind, but each of us must make a choice. Choose the life we have now that surely ends in death, or choose Jesus Christ who was separated from God, cursed by God, bore every sin that could or would ever be committed, and came back from the grave victorious over death. The choice is ours.

Lord Jesus – I believe You are the Son of God, thus God Himself. I believe that you became a man to save me from death. I believe you suffered every agony and bore in Your Body on the Cross all the punishment for my sin’s past, present and future. I believe you chose to be separated from God so I could be united with Him. You offered your seed of life to me. I want to be born-again into your life. I give up this life that’s only end is death, that I might share in Your Life which is forever.

One Veteran’s Story

Life has been a very interesting and rewarding journey for me. While my

military service seemed like an interruption in plans at the beginning, in every way, it has been one of the most important segments of my life experiences.

With two very special days coming up in the next week, I want to take the opportunity to share what my military days have meant to me. One veteran’s story and it is written in recogni-

tion of “Armed Service Day“ in May. My military service had its beginning this way. Having graduated from high school in the Spring of 1941, plans were made to begin my college work in the Fall. Before the Spring of 1942 two things had happened. I had made a personal commitment to a career in church related work, and our coun-

try had been drawn into WWII. Being of military age and wise counseling from my dad, I made the decision to enlist in the Army Air Corps.

From December 12, 1942 to November 29, 1945 I was in the military service.

I became a navigator on a B-24 and flew combat in Europe. On my 17th mission our plane was disabled flying a bombing mission to target the Karlsuhe, Germany, rail yards. I was squadron navigator with the 389th Bomb Group. On Septem-

Commissioners Discuss CARES Act Funding

By Gabrielle DeMay The regular meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court was called to order at 9:03 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2020, by County Judge Randy Moore, via teleconference. Judge Moore established quorum; all Commissioners were present. The invocation was given by Youth Pastor Cliff Ford, of Boyd Baptist Church.

4 Judge Moore opened discussion on the Fannin County Declaration of Disaster Proclamation for Covid-19 by recounting Governor Abbott’s address the day before, regarding the second phase of reopening the State. He recommended listeners view the video of the address, to be posted on the county website, to learn how the new executive order will affect their businesses. Commissioners agreed to follow the new executive order, and a motion was made to replace GA-21 and GA-22 with GA-23 and to replace the portion of the Proclamation prohibiting public gatherings of larger than 10 people with the implementation of minimized contact between different households and social distancing. Motion passed.

page of the Plan, which would read that any county employees who lack work and offer their services to other departments could claim those hours volunteered as hours worked. Commissioner Lackey asked for clarification on this recommendation. Judge Moore explained it was already established that county employees could, with their supervisor’s permission, help out other county offices if their own has too little work to keep them busy and that the addition would simply state that the hours thus spent would be dedicated as regular work hours.

Commissioner Magness noted that at the last regular meeting, it was voted to reestablish all non-risk county employees in their regular work. A decision was made to continue to bring county employees back to work, and not to add in the suggested wording on volunteered time.

Judge Moore introduced Herb Bristow, a lawyer the Commissioners have worked with in the past, who has experience coordinating the dispersal of relief funds from the CARES Act in a way that is concordant with federal government recommendation. Judge Moore explained that it is possible for funds the federal government deems improperly spent, in this case on anything not directly related to Covid-19, to be taken back. Mr. Bristow has already helped Collin County avoid this possibility. Herb Bristow clarified that when the CARES Act was hastily put together, there were only

Governor Abbot a week ago made an order to allocate $1.85 billion in local funds, which for Fannin County amounts to nearly $1 million, and set out basic guidelines that each county may receive 20% of their allotment by certifying that the terms of the CARES Act will be followed. Counties must then come up with a comprehensive plan detailing how the remaining funds will be spent according to the limitations stating 1) the expenditures must be in response to the public health emergency of Covid-19, 2) they cannot be spent on anything that has already been budgeted, and 3) the funds must be spent and the programs completed by December 30. Mr. Bristow stated he has helped larger and smaller counties develop spending programs that protect the funds from being disallowed and then paid back to the federal govern-

Commissioner Magness explained that last week there was an accident where the bed of the Mack truck turned over, twisting the frame of the truck, which he believes will cost more to repair than the truck is worth. Because parts of the truck are still salvageable, and the 14’ International Disk isn’t used, he made a motion to sell both on Auctioneer Express.

Commissioner Self noted that he had some equipment at his barn that he would like to sell as well, and would like to wait a week to allow all Commissioners to collect anything they would like to add to the sale.

Judge Moore suggested tabling the motion until the next meeting. The item was tabled until Tuesday, May 26.

11 Public Forum: Jeff from Trenton said, “When the Commissioners CARES Act workshop is organized, the Commissioners should encourage representatives of county agencies and non-profit organizations serving residents of the county to attend, and identify potential uses for COVID19-related federal funding.”

12 Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Whitlock said he is glad to see all the Precincts working together at the Bank Building, and wants to see that cooperation brings the county through COVID-19.

Commissioner Self was happy to see the reopening of Texas and more lives go back to normal, though he expects the lessons learned from Covid-19 will continue similarly to those of 9/11. He hopes the practices that have been put into place will prevent shutdowns in the future and would like to continue providing Zoom coverage of Commissioner Court meetings even after the Court can reconvene. Commissioner Magness agreed that he would also like to see the Zoom meetings

7 Commissioner Self thanked the other Commissioners for their help clearing out the materials stored in the Windom Bank Building. He said a lot of files were moved, and he conducted the appreciation of District Clerk Nancy Young. He noted that there is still a room of criminal files for the District Clerk that will need to be moved, and he would like to set up one more workday to complete the project. There is a special sliding shelf that will need to be professionally moved from her office into the caged portion of the storage, to make room for brass cases from the Windom Bank Building which must remain in a climate-controlled space. Purchasing Agent Michelle Case will get a quote on moving the sliding shelf. The Commissioners agreed to send two men each for another workday next week.

The discussion was closed, and no action was deemed necessary.

8 Judge Moore opened a discussion on remodeling the Windom Bank Building. Commissioner Self noted that there may be walls to be moved or built to accommodate County Clerk Tammy Biggar’s files, but that all Commissioners should visit the site to help determine a course of action. No action was deemed necessary, and the item was moved to the agenda of the first regular meeting of June to grant Commissioners enough time to view the building and generate ideas.

By Tamera Whitlow, LVN, USAF Veteran Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while in the battlefields for their country. We want to observe and memorize these veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. It is a time for remembering those who gave their life so that we could have the luxuries and freedom that we enjoy today.

If you have ever been to a Memorial Day Parade, you might have been given a red poppy made from paper. The wearing of the poppy was started on Memorial Day in the United States to symbol-

ize those we lost in the World War I. When the war was over in November 1918 it was a cold and disconsolate winter, the red poppy was one of the first plants to reappear across the battlefields after the War. God has ways of cleaning the canvas of fighting and death to a beautiful flowing field of red poppies for our remembrance and healing to begin.

The beauty of the fields of red poppies has inspired several famous poems we refer to this day in remembering our veterans. John McCrae wrote “In Flanders Fields”, he was a Canadian soldier and physician in the World War I. His description of the poppy was a war reality with his descrip-

tion of the dead buried in the Flanders fields and the poppies that blew between the crosses, row after row.

American professor and Humanitarian, Monia Michael wrote “We shall keep the faith”, a poem describing the war and the red poppy honoring the dead. She soon became known as “The Poppy Lady”.

In remembering the fallen, we also want to remember the loved ones at this time. We want to show them gratefulness for the precious gift that they have given so that we have our freedom. Home Hospice would like to say THANK YOU to those men and women who paid the ultimate price, “LIFE”. We are deeply grateful and we will always remember the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes.

Local businesses are the bones of any community, but more than that, they are the flavor and culture of the people. Nationwide shutdowns trying to minimize the spread of Covid-19 have impacted many such businesses, forcing some to close their doors forever. That’s why for the next few weeks, the Fannin County Leader would like to recognize some of the busi-

nesses that make Fannin County one of a kind.

We’ve asked some local business owners and managers to talk about how Covid-19 has affected their company, and about creative measures, they have taken to beat the virus.

reply was overwhelmingly positive. They have had a huge surge in business, and are booked out further than they have been since they purchased the company in 2011.

Ben reported they have been ordering more supplies, and that they are both thankful for how they have expanded the retail side of the company.

They are thrilled to supply Fannin County with beef and pork that, in these times of panic-buying, hasn’t always been available at larger chain retail establishments. They are happy with their suppliers, who make sure they have all the equipment and materials they need to keep running, from gloves to paper goods.

Hannah and Ben strive to be the best in the areas of food safety and animal welfare and are proud that Bluebonnet Meat Company is a Texas State Inspected wholesale and retail meat market.

Just GOTTA Have It 325 N. Main St. Bonham Owner: Sandra Posey When we asked how Covid-19 affected her boutique and candy shop, Sandra said that of course sales have been down, and early on in the

shutdowns she had to close her doors for two weeks. But that the short hiatus allowed her the chance to reopen with new ideas, and two weekends ago they had a great FridaySaturday turnout. We asked her to explain some of these new creative ideas she had to keep the business going, and she described special goodies baskets they made up for Easter and Mother’s Day for curbside pickup, which had a good reception. Sandra said she’s getting more comfortable going online to Facebook to get the word out to customers and promote her business.

“You do what you gotta do,” she chuckled. We asked what positive things she has noticed because of the shutdown, and she said customers have been very compassionate when they come in, and sometimes they even leave tips, which many have never done before Covid-19. She feels positive because the virus seems to have reminded people to shop for their local businesses. She has only had one unhappy customer she doesn’t wear a mask in the shop, and she won’t let it get her down. Sandra will continue to respect all her customers and their preferences. Sandra also wanted

to take this opportunity to thank BEDCo for their emergency assistance program grants, which have gone out to 31 small businesses in the community. She said not all local businesses were eligible for the national coronavirus relief loans, and that the funds from BEDCo helped these businesses with “no strings attached.” We asked if there is anything she would like to say to her customers, and Sandra said she is very thankful for all the people who understand the importance of spending money inside their local communities first.

Crossroads Hardware 209 US-69, Leonard Owner: Sheryl Gribble Sheryl told us sales have gone up a little since the pandemic struck the area, which she believes is due to more people staying at home and doing more home projects, as well as people shopping local to support hometown businesses. We asked what changes she has had to make to her business because of Covid-19, and she said they “temporarily reduced store hours since some staff was considered high risk. They needed time to assess their situation, and some chose to work reduced

hours. We’re now running with our full crew, and we returned to regular hours in late May: Monday through Saturday 7-7 and Sunday 9-5.” We asked if there was anything positive she could report, and Sheryl said the best thing was they kept the full staff without having to let anyone go, and no one has caught the virus.

She reported that aside from masks, gloves, and toilet paper, the company received all their supplies without delays.

She also mentioned that a local woman in the community sewed masks for everyone to wear. Crossroads Hardware’s customers and employees have all been very patient during these tough times. To readers, Sheryl said “Out of respect for our customers, we’re wearing face masks, have a low-tech sanitation station as you enter the store, and installed ‘spit shields’ at our registers. Once you’ve cleaned those shields a few times, it gets your attention!”

Creative Arts Center Annual Photo Show Goes Digital Press Release - Each June, the Creative Arts Center hosts a Photography Show. This is a longstanding tradition dating back to the Red River Photo Club, which got the tradition started. Occasionally, the show is judged and this year will be one of those years. A portion of the entry fees will be used for First, Second and Third place.

To facilitate entries, save photographers money on matting and framing and to enable more people who wish to remain at home to see the show, the arts center is accepting digital submissions only. This is the first foray into a digitalonly exhibit, but Lisa Avila, Executive Director, believes the time has come.

“With many people “staying in place” because of virus concerns, there is more likelihood that photographers will submit photos for a digital exhibit/show,” Lisa said. “Also, presentation of the photo is often the biggest expense, so digital submission saves photographers money and enables more artists to participate. Our judge can officiate from the comfort of home and a greater number can see

the exhibit if they view it online. All in all, this is a win-win for everybody.”

Submissions will be accepted between June 10 and June 17 - no exceptions. Entry fees are $25 per person for CAC members and $35 for non-members.

Three photos per person may be submitted. Fees must accompany or precede submission of photos.

In other words, please send a check in advance of sending the photos or call and use a credit card over the telephone when you send them. Photographers may also come by the center and pay in person.

Photos will be posted online Friday, June 19 and judged over the weekend. Winners will be notified and placings announced the following

Tuesday, June 23. The show will remain online on the Creative Arts Center’s website through July 25. Those interested

in submitting art can find more info on the CAC website at www.creativeartscenter.com.

Press Release - Fannin County Republican Women meet Monday, June 1, 2020 and will learn about redistricting and upcoming legislation from our State Representative, Reggie Smith.

Representative Smith was elected in November 2018. He represents Delta, Fannin, and Grayson Counties and serves on the House Committee on Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence and the House Appropriations Committee.

In 1991, Smith received his B.S. in Political Science from Austin College in Sherman, Texas and in 1994 earned his law degree from South Texas College of Law in Houston. Thereafter, Representative Smith opened a general practice law firm. Prior to his election, he served as a two-term chairman of the Grayson County Republican Party and the Northern Regional Director of the Texas Republican County Chairman’s Association.

Anonymous Donor Honored at Last

On Wednesday, May 20, 2020, Dr. Henry Spies gifted a final donation check each to the Fannin County Children’s Center and the Fannin County Crisis Center. Dr. Spies passed away on October 10, 2018, at 98 years of age, and Clifton and Betty Evans, who are the executors of his will, met with representatives from both Centers

and attorney Sharron Johnson at her office for a final celebration of Dr. Spies’ lifelong generosity. The Evans were tenants on Dr. Spies farm in Leonard; they were his friends, and in later years, his caretakers, and wished to give this last donation the recognition it deserves.

Dr. Spies was a private donor to these and other establishments for over a decade. Though he was adamant his financial con-

tributions go unobserved, those who knew him described Dr. Spies as very sweet, humble, and generous, and said he was very active with his church and very loyal to his friends.

Sandy Barber, Executive Director of the Fannin County Children’s Center, said Dr. Spies gave them a sum of about $600,000 last year, which will go a long way toward building a new home for the Children’s

Center on the 8 acres of land donated by Roy and Jan Reimer in 2019. The new location will be bigger, with more room for the teams and programs to work, and space outside where children can run around and play. There will also be offices for CPS investigators and law enforcement on-site, which will mean better communication and less unnecessary travel for the children. Barber explained this last check, which comes in at over $250,000, will help build a “lasting legacy of helping kids for years to come.”

Representatives from the Fannin County Crisis Center included Executive Director Carol Pillars, Community Liaison Sandy Hood, President of the Board of Directors Melody Michaud, Secretary Mary Jo Ransom, and Board Member Sue Agnew.

Mary Jo Ransom remembered how excited Dr. Spies was the first time he brought in a donation twelve years ago. They expected their usual personal donation of $25-50, but when they looked in the envelope, they found a check for $25,000. This final check will help the Crisis Center proudly serve the community and protect victims of sexual violence and abuse.

Dr. Spies for over 20 years, Dr. Spies was valedictorian of his graduating class in Ladonia in 1940, and his father, Henry Spies Sr., was a banker in Leonard, and at one time the County Clerk. Dr. Spies’ grandfather sat as County Judge, and his family possesses letters from an old family friend, longtime Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn.

5/23/17 Dr. Tom Spies’ doctor’s coat, a medal he was awarded by the Cuban President, and some of the medical books he has authored, along with the Judge’s gavel and other family artifacts, can be found in an exhibit at the Fannin County Museum of History. Dr. Tom Spies is honored with a state historical marker at Willow Wild Cemetery, where both he and Dr. Henry Spies are interred.

Covid-19 Is A Health Crisis, But It Is Also A Crisis Of Home

Press Release - Home is the front line for the COVID-19 crisis unfolding in our nation.

How we spend time sheltering in place says a lot about the world we live in. Normally, our differences are masked.

It’s hard to tell who gets free lunches at school and who doesn’t, who needs the library’s free internet access for homework, and whose home has the fastest broadband.

The pandemic lays out the

differences in “home” starkly.

In Texas, the very people working on keeping us safely in our homes are having trouble living in theirs. These are grocery store workers, janitorial staff, cooks in our favorite

restaurants. They are single moms and their kids. They are teachers, firefighters, and police officers. The seniors who help with Sunday School. Texans who work hard but whose wages pale against the cost of living.

For more than 9 million Tex-

ans, “home” doesn’t mean safety and comfort. It is overcrowded, lacking plumbing, or it is so expensive that other needs like food and health care go unheeded.

families share homes meant for one couple. Children suffer most in this environment, especially as we establish quarantines and online classrooms.

Children, especially young ones, suffer more health problems and lag behind their peers in education. Now, there is no relief and no respite.

In this time of rigid handwashing, some of those 9 million Texas neighbors live in homes that without kitchens or bathrooms. This is unacceptable. But especially today, education makes broadband a necessity, too. On April 1, 2020, the Texas Tribune reported “around one Texas household in three [is] without a connection to the communications network that makes it possible to work from home… We’re 38th among the 50 states in broadband adoption.” What is “home” when the basics of good health and education are denied?

For these families, economic insecurity or poor living conditions push people further behind. School campuses offered a safe space, with at least one hot meal a day and internet access for homework.

The challenges of home reach all economic levels, not just those in poverty. More than one out of every four Texans pay too much for their home, leaving less income for other basic necessities, including utilities, food and education.

Not being able to afford a home is the most common housing problem for our seniors. When the cost of a home outweighs the ability to pay, seniors and families must make hard choices on paying for food and medicine. For many, home isn’t a place of refuge from the storms outside. It is a place of hunger and want.

Press Release - TCOG Community and Economic Development hosted an informative presentation for area cities and businesses on the ways to help our communities recover from the economic impacts of COVID-19, on Wednesday May 13. Guest speakers included statewide and regional economic development experts offering suggestions for cities on ways to create opportunity from small business and industry reeling from corona viruses shut downs. Featured speaker was Jeff Moseley, former head of Economic Development and Tourism for the state of Texas, advisor to the Governor’s office, and current CEO of the Texas Association of Business, Texas’ largest business association.

He spoke on funding updates, health concerns about returning to work, statewide economic recovery projections and investing in Texas. He also highlighted legislation from the past and proposed, that could help the efforts. He offered one glimmer of real hope in his prognosis for the future: that some experts believe our recovery could be a V curve bounce back. A quick and strong recovery once we get through this, due to the strong business environment Texas has cultivated. Regional economic development experts spoke next, Audrey Schroyer of Gainesville EDC, William Myers of Denison Business Alliance, Stephen Filipowicz of Bonham EDC, they discussed what initiatives have been introduced in their own communities and how they have helped.

up-to-date information to the citizens and business community, as well as best Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) program practices during these times. Ms. Schroyer also shared her perspective on how EDCs and communities need to be proactive, creative and flexible in moving forward with respect to programming, strategic planning and budgeting.

William Myers of Denison Development Alliance spoke about Denison Mayor Gott’s effort to communicate with state and federal elected officials and to keep Denison residents and businesses informed, he also shared info about the Denison Development Foundation Small Business Emergency Loan for additional info go to www. denisontx.org/apply and the City of Denison‘s “Reopening Denison” information campaign https://www.discoverdenison.com/discover/page/ reopening-denison He urged communities to increase Business Recruitment & Expansion Program efforts and the need for communities to encourage more businesses to establish online presence and E-commerce capabilities.

Stephen Filipowicz of Bonham EDC spoke of the business grants and loans programs they have created for City of Bonham businesses. BEDCo Emergency Assistance (EA) Round #1 grants, now finished, was a program offered to City of Bonham businesses totaling $49,600 in grants of $1,600 each, awarded to 31 eligible Bonham businesses. He introduced the new Bonham/ BEDCo Emergency Assistance (EA) Round #2, which has set aside $150,000 for 0% APR loans to eligible,

creditworthy Bonham businesses. Loans are not to exceed a maximum of $10,000 per applicant and to be repaid within forty-eight months.

In addition, Catherine Krantz, TCOG Community & Economic Development Planner announced that the Texoma Economic Development District will be launching a new website and data tool in the coming months, specifically designed for small businesses and entrepreneurs. The software platform will provide business owners access to a tremendous amount of data with very specialized and individualized market research, to help them identify opportunities and insights about their business and the region.

All presenters were helpful, informative and optimistic about our prospects in Texoma, showing what we can do to make the best of our current situation and be ready to recover. Honey Grove promoted her early in May to softball manager to replace long-time leader Lee Frost.

It equates Price’s first time to lead a softball program, having also assisted with the sport at 3A Howe for a year.

An all-state-tournament catcher that championship season, the 2011 North Lamar graduate also has collegiate experience in the sport: mostly as a shortstop, but also as a second baseman. Price earned all-

conference honors both years and All-American status as a sophomore at Independence Community College in Kansas.

She finished with two seasons at Rogers State University in Claremore, Okla., where she earned all-conference secondteam notoriety as a senior.

“The players have a lot of respect for her and she will do a great job next year,” said Frost, who will continue to be Honey Grove’s middle school principal, completing his transition -started in 2015 -- from coaching to administration.

“Going to State was such an awesome experience,” she said.

Honey Grove returned to the postseason in 2016 via its first district title in the sport en route to an area-round advance.

Undefeated district championships ensued in 2017 and 2018.

After another back-to-back runs to the regional quarterfinals, the Lady Warriors played in 2019 in their first regional final in the sport.

Eventual 2A state title winners ended the last two of those extended advances for Honey Grove: defending-state-champ Bells (2018) and Crawford (2019).

Porter won his weight class at the Region VI Division III Boys Meet on March 13 to earn a return trip to the state powerlifting meet.

Porter, who made his first

state lift appearance last spring, triumphed in the 198 weight class, amassing 1,505 pounds via his efforts in the three categories: 600 squat, 365 bench, 540 deadlift.

Straub qualified for state competition for the first time via the 198 weight class as the runner-up with a cumulative 1,435 pounds: 560 squat, 330 bench, 545 deadlift.

The state competition had been scheduled for March 28 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, but was canceled -- as the coronavirus pandemic this spring gradually prompted the pausing of sports for the time being.

Besides being seniors, according to the THSCA website, criteria includes :

“be an athlete, student trainer or manager in good standing with the team; of good moral character and have an overall grade point average of 92 or above (including courses from grades 9-11 and courses completed from grade 12).”

Bobby Leon Nolen was born in Leonard, TX on June 12, 1941 to O.H. and Mary Etta (Duncan) Nolen and passed away on Monday, May 18, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He married Kathryn Ann (Cherry) Nolen on March 11, 1978 in Ivanhoe, TX; she preceded him in death on November 28, 2014.

Leon was a retired truck driver; he worked at Warehouse Foods in Bonham. Leon was also co-owner of the Anchor Club and co-owner of Kathy’s Kountry Corner, where he worked in warehouse foods, hand in hand next to his beloved wife. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Leon is survived by children, Donna Roberts, Traci Jaroze, Dwyane Forebs, Reece Duke, Crystal Rhoads, Erica Nolen and Kerry Nolen; brothers, O.H. Nolen, Roy Nolen, and Donald Nolen and sister, Shirley Mendez; 18 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.”Also preceding him in death are his parents, brother, Joe Nolen and sister, Juanita Malone.

Mrs. Foster “Nanny” entered into the arms of our Heavenly Father on Thursday, May 14, 2020 surrounded by her loving family.

Emma Jo (Carr) Foster, also known as Nanny, was born in Whitesboro, TX on March 3, 1931 to Jesse Lee and Caroline (Hudgens) Carr. She married Henry “Duke” Foster on May 17, 1948 in Gainesville, TX; he preceded her in death on November 1, 2002. Nanny was a home maker, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and friend.

She was a member of Savoy United Pentecostal Church.

She is survived by sons, John L. Foster and wife Martha and Donnie D. Foster and wife Deana; daughters, Debby K. Foster, Dena R. Brown and husband Jerry and Kellie J. Foster; 15 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren; and best friend, Beverly Thompson.

BUSTER JACK WILSON, JR.

Buster J a c k Wilson, Jr., age 58, passed from this life April 28, 2020, at his home in Paris, Lamar Co., Tx. He was born Oct. 24, 1961, in Commerce, Hunt Co., TX to Buster Jack Wilson, Sr. and Rebecca Todd. He grew up in the Houston, TX, area, attending school at Aldine ISD where his parents were teachers Friends and teachers began calling him “Buster”, but his family continued to call him Jack. He developed a love for music during high school playing alto sax in an award winning band. That love continued throughout his life and he mastered the harmonica in his later years.

After graduation Jack volunteered for the US Air Force where he served for 11 years.

Most of that tour was at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, WY where he helped maintain silos in the Minute Man Missile program.

He attained the rank of E5.

Jack married Lisa Ann Crawford in Troy, IL, and they had 2 children, Amber Dawn and Brandon Todd.

For a second marriage he chose Faith Hope Zillich. They married in FL, and had one son, Khayman Louis. The third time he married Elizabeth Ann Dye in Paris, TX, and gained a step-daughter, Stephanie Angel.

After leaving the Air Force, Jack returned to East Texas, settling in Telephone, where he lived in his grandparents’ old house. He worked at VPG in Bonham for a short time. From there he eventually moved to northern VA and worked for Cox Communications. He and Liz moved to Telephone, TX in 2005. He began working in Paris, TX, first at Rodgers-Wade and was employed several years at Nancy’s Cafe.

Besides playing his harmonica, Jack enjoyed gardening. He built raised beds, made his own compost and grew vegetables. He was a kind man who loved nature and enjoyed solitude.

Jack is survived by his wife, Liz Wilson of Front Royal, VA; father, Buster Jack Wilson, Sr., of Shenandoah, TX; mother, Rebecca Todd Shirley of Telephone, TX; sisters, Mary Ellen Walter of Spring, TX, and Rebecca Lynn Downs of Bethany, OK. Also, daughter, Amber Pamment of Hemingway, SC, and sons, Brandon Todd Wilson of Lansing, MI, and Khayman Wilson of Woodbine, Ga, and stepdaughter, Stephanie Angel Archer of Front Royal, VA. Also, an aunt, Doris Dotson of Telephone, TX, five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, D.K and Gladys Wilson and S.L and Maude Todd, an uncle, Michael C. Wilson; cousins Dwight Todd Dotson, Angela Pierce, and Charles Wilson.

Elmer Joe Houston, 80, of Olton, passed from this life and entered heaven on May 13, 2020.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Bartley Funeral Home.

Elmer was born on September 9, 1939 to Elmer Francis and Dorothy Aycock Houston in White Mound, Texas. Elmer was a graduate of Olton High School. He was employed in the Parts Department at Thompson Chevrolet, as a farmer, and as a trucker. Elmer was later employed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice at the Choice Moore facility in Bonham, TX. He married Patty Davison on August 12, 1988. Elmer was a member of the Olton Volunteer Fire Department and a founding member of the Olton Volunteer Ambulance Association. He enjoyed fishing, shopping at flea markets, and watching sports.

He loved to cook and collect cookbooks.

Elmer will be remembered as a loving father, husband, and friend. He will be deeply missed.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters Dana Paraskevas and her husband Bobby of Watauga, Texas and Denise Hasha and her husband Steve of Olton, Texas. Elmer is survived by grandchildren Brady Scoggin and wife Ashlie of Hallsville, Texas; Brittnee Parkey and husband Josh of Olton, Texas; Shanna Tims of Trophy Club, Texas; Kristin McKay and her husband Evan of Bedford, Texas; and Brooke Paraskevas of North Richland Hills, Texas.

Elmer is also survived by greatgrandchildren Zane, Roper, Payge, Noelan, Macee, Maddox, Rhett, Vivienne, Tyler, and Peter.

Two special friends; Don Russel and family of Plainview, Texas and Thad Weems and family of Honeygrove, Texas. Numerous cousins who will miss him dearly.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Francis and Dorothy Houston, and his wife Patty Houston.

FRANK K. BYRNE

Graveside Services for Frank K. Byrne were held at 2:00 pm on S a t u r d a y, May 23, 2020 at Hickory Grove Cemetery.

Frank K Byrne, 91, was born July 31, 1928, and spent his early years in Pennsylvania and New Jersey farm country. He married his first wife, Glenora Ann, in 1950 and soon after joined the Air Force. During the Korean conflict; he was an airplane mechanic stationed in Japan. He trained at Wichita Falls, Texas before being stationed in Albuquerque, NM and participated in the above ground testing of the atom bomb in Nevada. After the Air Force, he stayed in Albuquerque and worked at ACF, which secretly built atomic weapons.

Mr. Frank was a great story teller; he read the papers and National Geographic and knew more than he ever let on. He did not graduate High School but at 40 received his GED. By the time ACF transferred to GE in 1967, Frank needed a high school diploma to find another

job; he drove trucks locally for 25 years, retired and moved to Petty with his wife Valerie in 1992.

He loved being outside, growing whatever was before him and caring for birds and animals.

He truly loved the farm country in Northeast Texas and would not leave the trees, flowers, birds, cats and dogs (with a few opossums, packrats, and bees thrown in).

He worked on the Petty water board and was friends with John and Ruth James; after John passed his step-son Jimmy Caffee looked after Mr. Frank with extraordinary care until he passed. Frank spent his last two years in the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham, TX until he passed on Wednesday, May 20, 2020. The people there took wonderful care of him.

Frank is survived by two children, Leora Ann Byrne (65) and Jay K Byrne (54) both of Albuquerque, NM and his sister Carolyn Gee of Granville Summit, PA; and three step-children Nick, JoLynn and Charles “Bobby” Rushing. Valerie, his last wife, preceded him in death in 1997.
