get back to normal. During COVID-19, we provided curbside service to anyone uncomfortable coming into the restaurant for their takeout, and this is a service we will be proud to continue to offer our senior citizens from now on.

We are so thankful to God that we were able to stay open and serve the public. We appreciate everyone’s support, and the whole community coming together to help all the restaurants in the area by ordering takeout and keeping us going.

Our gun and ammo sales were up, and people were asking for small freezers.

What changes have you made during this time?

Well, we have done the sanitation and wipe down of things. We did try to do the 6ft. rule, but no one really abided by it.

Local businesses are the bones of any community, but more than that, they are the flavor and culture of the people. Nationwide shutdowns trying to minimize the spread of COVID-19 have impacted many such businesses, forcing some to close their doors forever. That’s why for the next few weeks, the Fannin County Leader would like to recognize some of the businesses that make Fannin County one of a kind.

We’ve asked some local business owners and managers to talk about how COVID-19 has affected their company, and about creative measures they have taken to beat the virus.

Grijalva How has your business coped during the COVID-19 shutdown?

Though interior dining wasn’t allowed, we were still able to provide a takeout service for our loyal customers, and we were very blessed to be able to stay open in this capacity.

Our crews were cut down each shift from full restaurant to takeout only, but we made sure to balance out the hours so everyone on staff could earn a paycheck, and a lot of us spent the extra time off at home with our families.

What is something good that’s come from the shutdown?

We did a small renovation on the kitchen, with new paint, interior siding, shelving, and appliances.

How will you be moving forward now more businesses are opening up?

We can’t wait to have the dining room open again and

Gail misses hosting chalk painting workshops, and the shows she and Bruce usually attend have all been canceled, but they are fighting the virus by getting an online store set up for customer convenience, and they provide curbside pickup as well. Gail has stayed busy by bringing in new merchandise and keeping everything clean and wiped down.

2) She brought up the garage and said it had been previously reported as unfinished. I told her the only thing done to the interior was some sheetrock had been put up but nothing else. No other changes had been made. Again, she did not

want to go look at the garage.

3) At this point she went to her vehicle and drove off.

5-4-20- I received my 2020 Notice of Appraisal Value and my Market Value had increased 123%. This was a 123% increase over what the Fannin County Appraisal Review Board had set it at and agreed to in 2019. I would suggest everyone look at their 2020 appraisal.

Building 9/23/14Prepared as Commissioners Seek EMS Contract

By Gabrielle DeMay The regular meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court was called to order Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at 9:01 a.m.

by County Judge Randy Moore, via teleconference. Judge Moore established quorum; all Commissioners were present.

The invocation was given by Reverend Rodney Sprayberry of New Zion Baptist Church in Ector. The pledges were led by Major James Manis.

4 Judge Moore recommended adjusting the Fannin County Declaration of Disaster Proclamation for Covid-19 to match Governor Abbott’s new Executive Orders by replacing GA18 in the Proclamation with GA-21, which continues the plan to gradually reopen the state. The suggested adjustments were approved, and the Proclamation extended until Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

5 The Covid-19 Response and Continuity of Operations Plan for Fannin County was also adjusted to eliminate GA-18 and add GA-21. Judge Moore proposed county employees that are not high-risk be instructed to return to work, while highrisk employees continue working from home. Adjustments to the plan were approved.

7 Judge Moore opened a dis-

cussion on selecting and adopting the Local Option Property Tax Code for Fannin County, as per the request of the Central Appraisal District. Judge Moore read four Options for consideration, and noted that the third Option, “offered the Local Option in 2019, intends to continue the Local Option for 2020,” was the Option selected last year. This Option applies to residents who are disabled or over 65 years of age, in the minimum amount of $3,000. A motion to select the Option adopted in previous years passed.

8 Judge Moore asked Commissioner Self to speak on the removal of materials stored in the Windom Bank Building.

Commissioner Self explained that as Fannin County is seeking bids on new EMS contracts, the building will need to be cleaned out to house EMS responders. The materials currently stored in the Windom Bank Building can be moved to the new storage building and District Clerk’s office on East 1st St. Commissioner Magness suggested moving the materials within the week, while inclement weather inhibits other activities. Commissioner Self offered to send men to help with the move. Commissioners will collaborate with County Clerk Tammy Biggar and District Clerk Nancy Young to arrange

for the proper processing of the materials in their new home.

A motion to proceed with the emptying of the Windom Bank Building passed.

9 Judge Moore invited County Purchasing Agent Michelle Case to address the issuance of a Request for Proposal (RFP) for EMS Services for Fannin County. Purchasing Agent Case stated the advertisements for the RFP will be out as early as next week and will continue for 45 days. Judge Moore noted that the RFP has been slightly revised by Purchasing Agent Case and District Attorney Richard Glaser, and this edited RFP will be sent to the Commissioners for review. Commissioner Self asked whether the transports of inmates, which are currently being undertaken by the Bonham Fire Department, will be included in the RFP. Purchasing Agent Case clarified that the RFP should cover all non-emergency transports, and Judge Moore added that such details can be worked out in the EMS Contract. The issuance of an RFP for EMS Services was approved.

10 Commissioner Magness requested approval of a 2020 Hustler Mower for Precinct 3 for $7999. The purchase was approved.

11 The Auditor’s Monthly Reports for April 2020 was approved.

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. It is a day for Americans to offer tribute and honor to the heroes who laid down their lives to preserve our freedoms.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War. It was not until after World War I, that the day was expanded to honor those service men and women who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was officially declared a national holiday by an act of Congress.

While visiting American graves at Suresnes American Cemetery in France on May 30, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson stated, “The Americans who went to Europe to die are a

unique breed... (They) crossed the seas to a foreign land to fight for a cause which they did not pretend was peculiarly their own, which they knew was the cause of humanity and mankind. These Americans gave the greatest of all gifts, the gift of life and the gift of spirit.”

Our commemorative events this year may differ from the past due to the need for health precautions. Though flags may still be placed at graves, traditional gatherings such as parades and reunions may not take place in the same way.

Still, we can keep the tradition of Memorial Day with virtual and online events showing our appreciation of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

On this Memorial Day, I ask you to unite with family and friends in a national moment of remembrance at 3:00 p.m.

14 Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Whitlock said he was glad to be back. He believes the county is coming out of Covid-19, and asked listeners to continue to pray for each other. Commissioner Self thanked listeners for their patience during the teleconference interruptions due to the storms. He thinks the community has learned some lessons from experiencing Covid-19 and hopes some of the safety practices will continue. Commissioner Magness addressed the dumping of trash on county roads and asked county residents to contact his office if they have too much burnable trash to handle.

He also asked drivers to be careful around county employees and volunteers working to clear storm-damaged trees from roads and ditches. Please be considerate. Commissioner Lackey announced his office has drawn up new mowing schedules for the four precincts to rotate landscape maintenance of county properties.

The schedule begins Monday, May 18, with one man each from precincts 1 and 4, then the next week 2 and 3, etc. He also noted the county grant for one of us. Their courage and sacrifice will always be honored across this great state, this great nation and most importantly, in our hearts.

Judge Moore reported 32 people were tested at the latest Covid-19 drive-thru testing on Saturday, though their results have not yet been returned. Only one person, out of 27, tested positive for the virus in the drivethru testing the week before.

One more person at the detention center, the roommate of the first positive Covid-19 case in the facility, has also tested positive, despite efforts to quarantine. Judge Moore also explained that more funding was being granted by the Office of the Governor to counties and cities and that costs that can be justifiably reported as due to Covid-19 may be eligible for grant reimbursement. He clarified that this is not FEMA funding, though it follows similar guidelines. Judge Moore cautioned listeners to take safety and social distancing seriously, especially as restrictions lift. He also reported that,

per the Office of the Governor, all nursing home residents and staff will be tested statewide.

Community Service On April 8th, a mentally challenged person had a birthday, which she was looking forward to. However, because of COVID 19, she could not have the desired party that she wanted. An impromptu parade was put together in hopes of making it a special day. A call was made to the Bonham Fire Department, on very short notice, to ascertain if they would be available to join in this parade.

They responded by sending an ambulance and fire truck.

They lead this parade and when we passed by the birthday girl’s home, they had their red lights and sirens going. I can not tell you the emotions I felt for this individual and the happiness and excitement she displayed by a face lite up by a large smile. Generally, we think of a family as being the people who dwell in the same residence and are called father, mother, and children. But circumstances sometimes arise that bring about a change to this concept. For

The first was my birth family. The second was my foster family. The third resulted from a new marriage relationship. In each setting, I was a very vital part of a family on a mission.

Bonham City Council Competes for EMS Contract Bid for Fannin County

By Gabrielle DeMay Bonham Mayor Roy Floyd called to order the regular meeting of the Bonham City Council at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 9, 2020, at Bonham City Hall. Police Chief Mike Bankston gave the invocation.

A quorum was established; Councilman Tim LaVergne II was absent. Minutes of the April 13 regular meeting and April 27 special meeting were approved.

Chief Financial Officer Dave Struchtemeyer gave an overview of the Financial report for April 2020: Through April, nearly $2.6 million have been collected in ad valorem tax revenue, with $175,000 left to be collected throughout the year.

Sales tax revenue through April is currently 2% better than budgeted. Due to Covid-19, the sales tax revenue for May will be the first month of the fiscal year that will be lower than previous years by about 4%, a trend that is likely to continue.

Water-Sewer revenues are improving, but still, lag 6% behind budget. Financial Report was approved.

During the Citizens Opportunity to Speak, Rick Massey requested consideration of Covid-19 restrictions on his Powder Creek Pavilion, which is an outdoor arena set up for band performance. Mr. Massey would like to host a few bands in the Pavilion by May 23, while providing hand sanitizer and masks on request. Police

Chief Bankston confirmed social distancing, according to the Office of the Governor, is only a recommendation, and the Council agreed Mr. Massey should not violate any laws by hosting outdoor performances.

Human Resources Director Brad Nichols presented the Employee of the Month plaque to Emergency Management Coordinator Chris Hughes.

City of Bonham Municipal Court Judge John Skotnik administered the Oath of Office Council Members Elect to Councilmen Tony Rodriguez and Kevin Hayes.

Councilman H. L. Compton’s nomination as Mayor Pro tem was approved by a unanimous vote, and Municipal Court Judge John Skotnik administered the Oath of Office.

City Manager Sean Pate noted that he received a phone call from County Judge Randy Moore to inform the City that in an upcoming meeting, County Commissioners will discuss soliciting proposals for a new EMS contract. The City of Bonham was invited to submit a bid and proposal for consideration, though Pate believes the County intends to move on from their expiring contract with the City of Bonham. City Manager Pate recommends submitting a bid and proposal in an attempt to keep up good relations with the County.

Mayor Floyd was hopeful but not optimistic about the situation.

Commissioners Discuss Budget Increases and Voting Equipment

A Special Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court was called to order at 9:02 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2020, by County Judge Randy Moore at Bonham City Hall. Judge Moore established quorum; all Commissioners were present. Judge Moore noted that according to new state laws, all regular and special meetings of the Commis-

I’m still making cookies about every week, and this last week, I made a batch of Snickerdoodles. I thought you might like this recipe. It’s easy, like a basic cookie recipe.

Most of you probably have all the ingredients in your kitchen already, so it makes for a quick batch of cookies when you get in the mood to cook.

SNICKERDOODLES 1 cup soft shortening (part butter) (I do half & half) 1½ cups sugar 2 eggs 2¾ cups flour 2 tsp cream of tartar 1 tsp soda ¼ tsp salt Heat oven to 400°. Mix shortening, sugar and eggs thoroughly. Blend all dry ingredients and stir in. Roll into balls the size of small walnuts. Roll balls in mixture of 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Place 2” apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes.

Judge Moore noted that this special meeting was intended to be discussion only. Discussion was opened on the first agenda item regarding pay increases for the 2020/2021 fiscal year. Judge Moore wanted to address projected income and expenses for the county, and the effect of Covid-19 on the county budget. He recommended each department save where they could, rather than spending their entire budget.

Commissioners discussed ways for the county to save money and balance expenses.

County Auditor Whipple provided estimated figures for the Commissioners to consider, but the “Proposed” Adopted Budget will not have to be filed with the County Clerk until July 30th.

The second agenda item regarding health care plans for 2020/2021 still awaited information from the Fannin County Appraisal District, and

will be discussed in more detail as these workshop discussions continue.

Judge Moore read out the requested budget increases for county officials and departments. Included in County Clerk Tammy Biggar’s budget report was a note on the purchase of new voting equipment to be considered by the Commissioners. As the nation shifts to voting machines that provide a paper record, Fannin County has two options for new equipment: a higher-end touchscreen system that includes paper ballots, and a cheaper system that was described as the “straight paper option,” though it includes an on-site scanner. The more expensive system would allow for the use of vote centers, which is a combined polling location for multiple precincts. Clerk Biggar noted that no other equipment was sought from other vendors, because other vendors will not allow the county to program their own database. The county prefers to program their own machines in order to offer the use of them to cities and schools for much lower fees than they would find in outside rental agencies.

Press Release - Aidan Straub, son of Chris & Jeri Lea Johnson, Grandparents Tommy & Barbara Hope, Loyd & Jane Johnson,

and Diane Hamm, has earned his Eagle rank as a member of Boy Scouts Troop 52. For his Eagle project, Aidan built a Ga-Ga Ball Pit at I W Evans Intermediate school. A Ga-Ga Ball Pit is a fast paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit.

Dubbed a kinder gentler version of dodge ball, the game is played with a soft foam ball, and combines the skills of dodging, striking, running, and jumping, while trying to hit opponents with a ball below the knees.

It was a mega hit with the children and they use it every day.

Gardening In May

March winds bring April showers, April showers bring May flowers…We’ve all heard this rhyme, highlighting the orderliness of nature, and how one step leads to the next one. With that in mind, as we enjoy our wildflowers this spring, remember not to mow them down until they have had time to set their seeds for next year’s generation.

With that extra time, turn your attention to your spring blooming shrubs and vines. Now is the time to look them over and give them a little light shaping and pruning, as many of them will bloom next spring on the growth they make this year. Then feed them a little balanced tree and shrub fertilizer, and replenish

their mulch to finish off their TLC. Now that our soil has warmed up, it is time to plant okra, southern peas, and if you have sandy soil, sweet potatoes.

Take stock of your flower beds and see where you might be able to tuck in a little color for the summer. Summer annuals for a sunny bed include vinca, zinnias, portulaca, marigolds, morning glories, ageratum and celosia.

For shade, impatiens, begonias, coleus, and caladiums are some favorites. If you would rather not have to replant each season, you may prefer some perennials for shade like ferns, hosta, turk’s cap, ajuga, phlox and columbine.

Graveside service for Charles Ray Lollis, 80, of Bonham were held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at Gum Springs Cemetery in the Carson Community of Fannin County under the direction of Wise Funeral Home.

Chaplain Jamey Childers officiated. Charles passed away early Sunday morning, May 10, 2020 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison.

Charles was born Aug. 16, 1939 in Pilot Point, Texas, the son of Haywood Western Lollis and Bernice Steward Lollis. He was a US Navy veteran. Charles married Dorris Cleo McAnear on Feb. 8, 1957 in Jacksboro, Texas, and she preceded him in death July 4, 2016. He was co-owner and operator of the Phillips 66 Service Station in Bonham for many years. Charles enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping. He was preceded by his parents, a son, Charles Haywood Lollis and a brother, Johnny Western Lollis.

Left to cherish his memory are 3 sons, Johnny Ray Lollis and wife, Tina, and Donny Ray Lollis, all of Bonham, TX and George Western Lollis and wife, Theresa of Weatherford, TX; 2 daughters, Bernice Hughes and husband, Garry and Erna Lawhon and husband, Jay all off Bonham, TX; a sister, Shirley Smith of Nevada; 11 grandchildren, Jubal, Rusty, Natasha, Brittany, Bruce, Kathy, Summer, Nathaniel, Latasha, Chuck and Cody; 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; extended family and friends.

ELMER JOE HOUSTON

Elmer Joe Houston, 80, of Olton, passed from this life and entered heaven on May 13, 2020.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Bartley Funeral Home Elmer was born on September 9, 1939 to Elmer Francis and Dorothy Aycock Houston in White Mound, Texas. Elmer was a graduate of Olton High School.

He was employed in the Parts Department at Thompson Chevrolet, as a farmer, and as a trucker. Elmer was later employed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice at the Choice Moore facility in Bonham, TX. He married Patty Davison on August 12, 1988. Elmer was a member of the Olton Volunteer Fire Department and a founding member of the Olton Volunteer Ambulance Association. He enjoyed fishing, shopping at flea markets, and watching sports.

He loved to cook and collect cookbooks.

Elmer will be remembered as a loving father, husband, and friend.

He will be deeply missed.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters Dana Paraskevas and her husband Bobby of Watauga, Texas and Denise Hasha and her husband Steve of Olton, Texas. Elmer is survived by grandchildren Brady Scoggin and wife Ashlie of Hallsville, Texas; Brittnee Parkey and husband Josh of Olton, Texas; Shanna Tims of Trophy Club, Texas; Kristin McKay and her husband Evan of Bedford, Texas; and Brooke Paraskevas of North Richland Hills, Texas.

Elmer is also survived by greatgrandchildren Zane, Roper, Payge, Noelan, Macee, Maddox, Rhett, Vivienne, Tyler, and Peter.

Anna Faye (Ball) Morgan a loving wife, mother and grandmother and friend was born in Bonham, TX on May 22, 1941 to Wesley and Mildred (Price) Ball. She married Donnie Morgan on May 28, 1960 in Bonham, TX. Anna Faye is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Vicki Ball, her husband, Donnie Morgan and her son Jeff Morgan.

Anna Fay owned and operated AF Secretarial services in Bonham, Texas from 1984 until her retirement in 2011, offering bookkeeping and tax services to businesses in the community. Her greatest joy was being a Sunday School Teacher, both at Bonham First Assembly of God and most recently at Dallas First Assembly of God. She dedicated her life to Jesus Christ and committed her time to teaching, bible study and spreading the good news.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Morgan of Rowlett, TX; grand-daughter Courtney Lewis and husband Charlie of North Dakota, and grand-daughter Brooke Morgan of Bonham, TX; great grandchildren, Isabella Deas, Leia Deas, Juliet Deas, Elijah Deas, and Ezekiel Deas; niece, Tammy Webb and many beloved members of her Ball family.

Mrs. Brewer passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2020 at Bluebonnet Rehabilitation of Ennis.

Juanita June (White) Brewer was born in Fannin County Texas on May 10, 1933 to Jesse Lee and Barbara “Alice” (Holland) White. She married Ross Elliott Brewer on September 16, 1950 in Windom, Texas; he preceded 5/19/20 her in death on May 2, 1994.

June was a social butterfly. She loved to laugh and enjoyed being with family and friends. First she was a wife and a mother; and her life changed forever in 1974 when she became Granny for the first time. Granny of 13 grandchildren and then 20 great grandchildren, she dearly loved each one, snuggling them as babies then playing Chicken Foot and SkipBo as they grew. She looked forward to updates and recent photos of their busy lives and accomplishments.

June was a member of the Northside Church of Christ.

Church was of the utmost importance, making sure we attended every time the doors were open including during Vacation Bible School.

June was the best cook in town.

She would try all the dessert recipes she found in the Dallas Morning News, after reading the obituaries and working the daily crossword puzzles. Even though we girls never learned how to cut up a whole chicken, momma taught us how to fry it perfectly. She would always ask if the granddaughters could cook and was so proud to hear when we said YES. Cooking and cookbooks will be her legacy for generations to follow. June also loved reading cookbooks, listening to George Jones, doing laundry and family reunions.

She and daddy were very active in the Dallas Model A Club, traveling and making lifelong friends. We all looked forward to her calling every year to sing Happy Birthday in her unique Operatic voice. In 1993, they moved back to their hometown of Windom, reuniting with two sisters Lucille and Mary Francis and old high school friends. She was an honorary member or the renowned Windom Quilt Guild.

Her life changed again forever when Dad passed away 10 months after moving back home.

Eventually, she and Orville met and spent the next many years together traveling, attending Bluegrass Concerts, game nights playing 42, family momentous events and even shooting frogs.

June was an amazing woman, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister and friend; she will be dearly missed by all that knew her.

June is survived by her daughters, Sheila Ann Milleman and husband Bill of Stephenville, TX and Debra Jan Davis and husband Ray of Garland, TX; 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; sister, Barbara Anita Orr of Garland, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is also preceded in death by her son, Rickey Lynn Brewer and parents.

Michael Milligan Sumrall was born in Hollis, OK on March 14, 1948 to Nolton Thurman Milligan and Ruby Mae (Haynes) Milligan Wheeler. He married Jennifer Paulette (Gore) Sumrall on December 1, 1972 in Dumas, TX. Michael was a truck driver and hauled concrete. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Michael enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, tinkering and any outdoor activity.

He liked to play dominoes and go to trades days. Michael was a giving man and was always ready to lend a hand.

He is survived by his wife, Paulette Sumrall of Whitewright, TX; daughters, Marla Napler of Arlington, TX; Marsha Ray of Childress, TX and Jennifer Sumrall of Sherman, TX; son Brian Sumrall of Bonham, TX; 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; sister, Mary Beth Hamon of Boswell, OK; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

DR. JEFF DAVIS DUNCAN

BonhamDr. Jeff Davis Duncan, age 81, of Bonham, TX was born on August 22, 1938 in Dallas, TX to J.D. and Louise (Cox) Duncan.

He entered into the arms of our Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Jeff Davis Duncan married Regina “Gina” Jo (Bach) Duncan on October 5, 2007 in Bonham, TX. He joined the United States Marines at the age of 17 and served honorably from 1955 to 1961. He worked for the Dallas Police Department for 4 years and graduated from Tennessee Temple and Pastored several churches in DFW area. At the age of 31 he started Medical School and obtained his Medical Degree.

Jeff worked at the Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Northeast Medical Center in Bonham, the Bonham VA, and was the Medical director at Cole Moore Prison Complex where he retired.

Jeff was a caring, loving, giving and witty person who loved to tell jokes and do magic for others. He was a member of the American Rifle Association and the American Medical Association. Jeff dedicated his life to serving God, his family and the community; he was a member of the Parkside Baptist Church in Denison, TX. Jeff is survived by his wife, Gina Duncan of Bonham, TX; children, Jeffie Burns and husband Ben of Lufkin, TX; Tami Switzer and husband Burt of Midlothian, TX;

Donald Duncan of Colorado; David Duncan of Dallas, TX; Wendy Hollabaugh and husband Greg of Arlington, TX; Jessica Duncan of Garland, TX; Kelsey Duncan of Arlington, TX, Billy Teague and wife Kimberly of Denison, TX; and Kristy Stanley and husband Jason of Bonham, TX; along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Graveside services for Lon Edward Fanning, age 82 of Bonham, were held at 2:00 PM Friday, May 15, 2020 at the Duplex Cemetery, 313 County Road 2102, Ivanhoe, Texas 75447. The service was open to family and friends. Longtime family friend, Kevin Towery, officiated. Lon passed away at his home in Bonham on Monday, May 11, 2020.

Lon was born on November 30, 1937 in Amarillo, Texas to Lon Edward and Agnes (Walker) Fanning. After graduating from Canyon High School in 1955, Lon attended West Texas State University and East Texas State University where he received a master’s degree in Agriculture.

Following graduation, Lon worked as a principal and science teacher at North Fannin School. Later, he worked for US Steel Ag Division in Oklahoma and Texas, Wolfe City Grain, and retired from Kraft Food Company.

On November 10, 1956, he married Jo Ann Norris in Duplex, Texas.

They were married for sixty-three years and were blessed with two children.

His interests included spending time with his family, reading, woodworking, listening to music, and having coffee with his friends.

Lon never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann, son, Mark Lon Fanning and wife, Amanda, of Burleson, daughter, Amanda Gilbreath and husband, Chris, of Bonham, and grandchildren, Aaron Lon Fanning, Codie Gilbreath, John Gilbreath, and Colton Fanning. Survivors also include his brother, Jim Fanning of McAllen, his sister, Nedra Davis of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and sister-in-law, Wanda Norris, of Bonham.

Virginia Mae (Sangster) Easley was born in Telephone, TX on May 6, 1926 to Harry Benford and Bertha Gertrude (Babb) Sangster.

Virginia married the love of her

life, Dencel Easley, on May 21, 1942 in Bonham, TX at the age of 16 and was married for 61 years. They moved to Dallas in 1953. She was a homemaker, master seamstress, quilter, and gardener. Oh, how she loved her veggies and flowers. She was an adventurer and loved to travel, exploring new places and giving us kids the same love. Virginia loved her family, children, and grandchildren, especially the grandkids. She had a heart of gold.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Dencel Easley on April 19, 2003; brother, Harry Sangster, Jr.; sisters, Vivian Sangster, Velma Rice, and Alma Harrison, and parents, Harry and Bertha Sangster.

By Rich Hilliard HONEY GROVE -- Five years ago, Lee Frost began to make the transition from coach to administrator.

When he became the middle school principal in 2015 at Honey Grove, he relinquished most of his other assignments: defensive coordinator for the varsity football team, head boys basketball coach, fulltime teacher.

“Once coaches enter into administration, they often in-

stantly leave the coaching profession behind,” said Frost.

“Responsibilities increase tremendously and doing both often leads to increased stress and less time to spend with family.”

However, he had reasons for wanting to continue one assignment: softball manager.

“Five years ago, we were coming off of a (softball) season where I felt we had underachieved due to injuries,” said Frost. “Team chemistry was an important part of the success I knew was coming. I didn’t

want my leaving to upset the team chemistry.

“I also had one daughter (Kelsee) coming into the program as a freshman and another (Kailee) coming back for her senior season,” he said.

“I just didn’t think it was the right time for me to leave. I felt I could handle the dual responsibility.”

What ensued equated the best years in the history of the softball program at Honey Grove.

Bonham alumnus Tyler Rodriguez will continue his collegiate track and field career at NCAA Division-I Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

“One of the biggest reasons I chose WCU was because of their nationally ranked horizontal jumps program,” said Rodriguez.

“The coach -- Jesse Norman --is a great coach who has brought other great jumpers to Western.

“I’m ready to be around a group of athletes,” he said, “that always competes at a high level.

“That way I can improve myself.”

Rodriguez, who will still vie in the long and triple jump, comes to WCU from NCAA DivisionIII Hendrix College in Conway, Ark., with whom he signed in April 2019 to compete in two sports: football and track and field.

When the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) prompted the premature ending of all spring

collegiate sports seasons nationwide in mid March, he had a nation-best mark in the long jump and ranked third in the triple jump.

Last month, Rodriguez, a 2019 Bonham High School graduate, noted intent to continue his athletic career only in track and field and at a then to be determined different school.

“First, I’d like to thank the Lord for blessing me with the people that love me and have helped guide me to my decision,”said Rodriguez in a tweet pinned on his Twitter account announcing the move. “I’d like to thank my family and close friends for being there for me through these times.

“I’d like to thank Hendrix College, (Head Football) Coach Buck (Buchanan) and (Head Track and Field) Coach (Andrew) Raske,” he said, “for helping me pursue my dream of playing football and track at the collegiate level.

“I’m also very thankful for all the new friendships and relationships Hendrix brought me.”

It took regional finalist Tom Bean (2017) and defending Class 2A state champion Bells (2018), the latter en route to a title repeat, to stop those runs.

A district runner-up finish in 2019 preceded a first-time trip to the regional finals -- where it took eventual state champion Crawford to stop Honey Grove.

It proved to be the last full season of coaching the sport for Frost -- COVID-19, several weeks ago, cut short the 2020 campaign, as district play began.

Frost finished with a 118-74-1 record as the softball manager at Honey Grove -- the only place he coached the sport during his 25 overall years in the profession. He had a 17-8 record in the postseason.

“The last five years, we have been fortunate in a lot of ways,” said Frost. “We have had some outstanding players throughout. Team chemistry has been very good during that time.

“Senior leadership has been the key to maintaining chemistry and also in sustaining the effort to continually compete at a high level,” he said. “... [O] ur athletes maintained an excellent work ethic and team chemistry remained very positive.

Coaches’ and player expectations remained high throughout that span.

“I [have] felt fortunate that the HGISD administration agreed and allowed me to stay on...”

Frost will now solely be the middle school principal at Honey Grove.

Carley Price, who in her first year with HGISD assisted Frost with softball, has been named as his successor.

Price also knows something about success in the sport: She played on North Lamar’s 3A state championship softball team in 2010, before extending her playing career into college.

“The players have a lot of respect for her,” said Frost, “and she will do a great job next year.

“I feel fortunate I had the opportunity to mentor thou-

sands of young students and athletes,” he said. “Hopefully some of what I taught them allowed them to have a positive attitude about life.

“Teaching and coaching all the many young men and women throughout the years has certainly had a positive effect on my overall outlook on everything.”

Notes: Frost made the move from coaching boys to girls sports at Honey Grove -- specifically, softball -- to have the chance to coach and be around his daughters. He had previously coached the sport at the youth level. ... During five seasons (2010-15) as Honey Grove’s head boys basketball coach, he had a 90-46 record -- part of his overall 123-71 mark on the court. He turned a six-win team the year prior to his arrival into a regular district champion and postseason participant ... He also served as the defensive coordinator for Honey Grove’s 2012 football regional-round qualifier and undefeated district champion, having worked with the same athletes as their junior high and jayvee coach. He coached football in various roles under three different head coaches from 2008-2015 at Honey Grove.
