I would direct all county employees and citizens to that document located on the County’s homepage, as your source of information and direction in this difficult time. It will be updated accordingly.

We are aware of rising tensions, rising emotions, and we are sensitive to the frustrations of the people. I share some of those same frustrations.

However, I believe, as County Judge, one of the worst things government officials can do is provide inaccurate, false, or biased information. Because, you, as citizens, deserve accurate information, we must verify the information we provide you. I do not want to speculate, or rely on information based on rumor or gossip. Nor do I want to provide information that

will unnecessarily increase the hardships we are all facing. I also do not want to make decisions that affect us all, without carefully considering the impact such decisions will have on the lives of Fannin County citizens.

We are gathering information and we are carefully processing that information, so we can make the best decisions possible. We are acting at the direction of State authorities, while also considering the recommendations of healthcare professionals, to create local solutions for what has become a global pandemic.

On Tuesday, March 17, 2020 I took steps to address the severity and potential impact of these circumstances.

In an official Proclamation I certified that COVID-19 posed an imminent threat of disaster to Fannin County. I did so, hoping all Fannin County citizens would unite together to face this challenge. That same day, the County Commissioners and myself worked together to create the COVID-19 Response

Friday morning, March 20, 2020 at 10:08, Judge Randy Moore established a quorum and began an emergency meeting of the Commissioners Court. The Court updated the proclamation presented by the Judge, Tuesday, March 17, 2020, in the regular meeting of the Commissioners Court and the Covid-19 Response and Continuity of Operations Plan for Fannin County.

The Proclamation of Disaster Declaration and the Covid-19 Response and Continuity of Operations Plan for Fannin County are available on the Fannin County website at www.co.fannin.tx.us The Commissioners are making every effort to keep the County informed and safe.

They made changes to the Proclamation and the Operations Plan to somewhat mirror the steps being taken by Governor Abbott, for the State.

As stated today on the conference call, at the regular meeting, Tuesday, March 17, the Commissioners and the Judge did not know of a confirmed case of the coronavirus in Fannin County. They received the information late, Tuesday night. The press conference held at the Sheriff’s office, Wednesday afternoon, was a direct result of our county officials receiving the confirmed case information.

CHILI RELLENOS QUICHE 1 (9 inch) pastry shell 2 cups grated Monterey Jack cheese 1 (4 oz.) can chilies 4 eggs 1 cup half & half ¼ tsp. pepper Taco sauce Bake frozen or prepared pastry shell at 475° for 5 minutes.

Sprinkle into partially baked crust 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese. Layer with half of chilies. Sprinkle with remaining 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese. Add rest of chilies, more if you like it hot.

Mix together and pour over mixture in crust the eggs, half & half and pepper. Bake in a preheated 375° oven for 30 minutes. Serve with taco sauce or add egg topping. Serves 6.

EGG TOPPING: In small bowl, beat until very stiff 2 egg whites. Fold in just until blended 2 egg yolks that have been beaten slightly. Spoon over baked quiche. Be sure to seal to the edge of crust. Bake for 15 minutes at 375°. Or until golden brown.

Be sure you think about others around you, elderly family members, etc. The President and Congress are working on financial and social programs to assist everyone in dealing with this crisis. The House of Representatives has passed a bill focusing on paid leave. Mr. Baker assured the Court of Congressman Ratcliffe’s availability if there are questions.

Judge Moore acknowledged Dr. Froelich, the Fannin County Health Authority and asked him to speak concerning the Coronavirus. Dr. Froelich encouraged everyone to keep all precautions in place and use common sense. He stated the County has been preparing for this virus for over a month.

Dr. Froelich directed the Court to refer to the Department of State Health Services website for information. He stated it is best to call your physician before going to the office if you think you may be experiencing symptoms of the virus.

The physician will ask questions, ask you to monitor your symptoms, to determine if you

need to be seen or tested for the virus. As the County Health Authority, Dr. Froelich is in touch with state and federal health offices, to stay informed of any changes needed within the County. There currently is no treatment. Patients are being treated for their symptoms.

Boosting your immune system is suggested as if you were trying to prevent yourself from getting the flu. Vitamin C, in doses of 2,000 to 4,000 milligrams per day, taken in doses of 1,000 milligrams at a time, with an orange or juice, to activate the vitamin. According to Dr. Froelich, at the time of this meeting, testing for the virus is going to be more available but the guidelines are stringent at this time.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month Press Release - April is designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual assault, harassment, and abuse and to educate communities about prevention methods. This year SAAM is stressing the importance of teaching consent. Asking for consent is a healthy, normal and necessary part of every day interaction.

Consent is a concrete example of what it takes to end sexual harassment, abuse, and assault.

Statistics according to RAINN (Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network) regarding sexual assaults: •Every 73 seconds an American is sexually assaulted.

•On average there are 433, 648 victims of sexual assault each year in the U.S. •Children and adults between the ages of 12-34 have the highest risk for being assaulted.

If you or anyone you know has experienced any form of sexual assault, please contact Fannin County Family Crisis Center. The center has many ways to offer assistance to the survivor. All services are provided free of charge.

Important Information Regarding Vehicle Registration, Titling and Disabled Placards Requirements

(AUSTIN, Texas – March 16, 2020) In an effort to reduce the need for in-person transactions, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) worked with Governor Greg Abbott and our stakeholders to temporarily waive certain requirements for vehicle registration, vehicle titling and disabled parking placards.

On March 13, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation, declaring a state of disaster for all counties in Texas due to the threat of COVID-19. Governor Abbott also issued a statement on March 16, 2020, granting a temporary extension to obtain initial registration, renewal of registration, vehicle titling, and renewal of a permanent disabled parking placard. Governor Abbott also granted a temporary extension for an individual with an expired 30-day temporary permit to obtain another permit or Texas registration.

The temporary waiver applies to vehicle owners in all Texas counties as set forth in the above-referenced proclamation and statement. This temporary waiver is in effect until 60 days after TxDMV notifies the public that normal vehicle registration, vehicle titling and related services have resumed. The 60-day period will be the same for all counties.

The purpose of the waiver is to prevent customers from having to physically visit a county tax assessor-collector office to obtain initial registration, to obtain a 30-day temporary permit, to transfer title; or to renew registration or a permanent disabled parking placard. Customers may continue to renew their registration online at www.TxDMV.gov.

At this time, TxDMV continues to fill online registration sticker requests and process all other online services.

TxDMV has informed law enforcement agencies and the offices of the county tax assessor-collectors of the temporary waiver.

COVID-19 update from the Children’s Center

Press Release - The mission of the Fannin County Children’s Center is promoting safety and improving the lives of abused and neglected children. Our work on safety has taken an unprecedented turn in recent days with the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

At the Children’s Center, we have been working diligently to make changes and adjustments in order to ensure health and safety of all, while still providing many critical and essential services.

We have increased efforts in cleaning and disinfecting the center. We are encouraging frequent hand washing. Anyone who is feeling sick is urged to stay home.

We have drastically reduced the number of people coming to our center in order to practice social distancing.

• Volunteers have been asked not to come in.

• Many of our staff are working from home, however, forensic interviews are continuing to be conducted as needed at the center as this is a critical service that usually cannot wait.

• Counseling sessions were cancelled for this week. Our therapists have been investigating tele-health options and we are hopeful that we can resume counseling sessions early next week using this new format.

• For our CASA advocates and staff, face-to-face visits have been halted but we have been making it a high priority to have regular, weekly contact with their children and youth through Facetime, Skype or other visual app.

• We have cancelled upcoming prevention classes, as well as other meetings and larger gatherings.

We will continue to moni-

tor the situation and adapt as needed. By working together, being flexible and helping one another, we will get through this trying time.

TXDOT TAKING COVID-19 ACTION TO KEEP EMPLOYEES AND PUBLIC SAFE

(CDC) to cancel gatherings of 50 or more people and the request from President Donald Trump to avoid gatherings larger than 10 people, TxDOT is postponing or canceling its in-person public hearings and gatherings through April 3. That date is subject to change. This excludes the Texas Transportation Commission meeting on March 26, 2020, which will be addressed separately.

When possible TxDOT will look to offer virtual participation strategies for public input.

Work on projects to improve our transportation system continues, as does TxDOT’s ongoing work to maintain and operate our state’s transportation system, to include ferry operations.

TxDOT has closed the lobbies of its 12 Travel Information Centers until further notice to help combat the threat of COVID-19. Outside restrooms will remain available at all times and

will be regularly cleaned between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The safety rest areas on highways throughout the state remain open.

These provide important rest stops for drivers.

Travelers can also still speak with our center counselors about road conditions or travel information between 8 a.m.and 5 p.m.

Anyone can call 1-800-4529292 or visit drivetexas.org to obtain road condition information 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

As awareness is key, on Saturday, March 14, TxDOT began sharing safety messages on its digital highway signs throughout the state. These messages include, “Give Xtra Space, With Each Other, And On The Road” and “Hands Clean, 2 Beat Covid-19, Be on TX Team.” These are short, easy to read messages to help reinforce the importance of preventing the spread of the virus.

In conjunction with Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s disaster declaration related to COVID-19, TxDOT is also requiring its office-based employees to telework beginning March 16.

Teleworking has been an option for TxDOT officebased employees for several years now, and with this temporary new directive, TxDOT will continue serving the state’s transportation needs. TxDOT’s number one priority is always safety, and the agency is in constant contact with state health and emergency management officials to do its part during this global health situation.

Excessive stockpiling during COVID-19 outbreak puts others at risk

Kay Ledbetter There is a difference between purchasing in preparation for a home stay and the excessive stockpiling being seen in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service specialist.

“The coronavirus, or COVID-19, has understandably caused people to feel fearful,” said Miquela Smith, AgriLife Extension specialist-health, Amarillo.

“Families want to be as prepared as possible during this time of uncertainty. Social distancing is critical right now, and one reason to stock up on certain items is to avoid making repeated trips into crowded public areas. You should also stay home if you become sick, except to seek medical care.”

Smith said current guidelines indicate people should have enough food and supplies for two weeks. Some items to have on-hand are dry, canned or frozen foods, medications, soap and disinfectant, and fluids with electrolytes.

Stockpiling: If you don’t need it, leave it “But excessive purchasing or stockpiling of supplies can negatively affect others,” Smith said. “For example, current CDC guidelines indicate that only those who are sick should use face masks, and yet there is still a shortage of masks across the country.

“What this means is that

people who actually need them—sick individuals, immunocompromised individuals and medical providers—may not be able to get them. This could worsen the spread of the disease and hamper the healthcare system.”

Other items people have been excessively stockpiling are toilet paper, cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer, she said.

Handwashing and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces are examples of small actions that can help slow the spread of communicable diseases such as COVID-19, but keep purchases within reason, Smith said.

Prepare, but don’t panic “The resounding message from public health authorities is to prepare but don’t panic,” Smith said. “We all must rely on each other during a pandemic; buying more than you need can endanger others.”

Instead of stockpiling, she said, each person should do their part to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by engaging in handwashing and disinfecting practices every day along with the recommended social distancing.

Game Warden Field Notes

Stop Methin’ Around On Feb. 10, an Ellis County game warden received a call from the Cedar Hill police chief to discuss issues and complaints they were receiving on a rural part of the city where their officers couldn’t easily access. After the game warden met with the chief and lieutenant, he patrolled the area and located a white truck trespassing with the driver still sitting in the vehicle. A meth pipe was in his hunting jacket and the suspect admitted to waiting on his friend to go hog hunting.

The game warden located 1.6 grams of meth in the vehicle and a loaded 30-30 rifle. The suspect was a convicted felon and the rifle came back as stolen out of Montgomery County.

The subject was arrested and placed in the Ellis County Jail.

game wardens heard a gunshot that sounded extremely close. After looking at a map, they noticed a pipeline about 50 yards away. As they made their way down the pipeline, the wardens noticed a pickup and ATV tucked away into the woods. While approaching the pickup, they witnessed two individuals tucking things into the toolbox of the truck. It appeared they had interrupted what was about to be a hunt without consent case. A bag of hog-wild attractant was found in the toolbox as well as a shotgun with buckshot and a rifle with a thermal scope. The ATV had been reported stolen out of Liberty County in 2018, so it was seized for further investigation. The registered owner of the ATV listed a guide on his hunting lease as his primary suspect. The guide just happened to be the same individual who was in possession of the ATV. Charges Pending.

Lights Out On Feb. 15, a Sabine County game warden observed a truck traveling on State Highway 87 near Milam, Texas with inoperable taillights and license plate lights. The warden initiated a traffic stop on the truck and upon contacting the driver and passenger, the warden located a white-tailed buck deer in the bed of the truck. After a brief interview, the warden was able to obtain a confession from the individuals. The deer was shot from the road with the aid of

an artificial light. Both subjects were arrested for hunting white-tailed deer at night and hunting with the aid of artificial light. Cases Pending.

Food Truck Bandits While returning a recovered stolen game camera from a previous hunting case to the land manager of a local development company, a Montgomery County game warden learned that they had been having theft issues from the active construction areas on some of their development properties. The warden and a Grimes County game warden made a pass through the development while on routine patrol the evening of Feb. 15 and witnessed four individuals loading thousands of dollars of construction materials into the back of two pickup trucks. When the wardens contacted the group, they claimed that an unnamed friend who worked there told them they could have what they were taking. The land manager was able to quickly contact the construction superintendent of the project who verified that no one other than him had the authority to give away material and he did not give anyone permission to take anything. All four individuals were arrested for theft $750-$2,500, a class A misdemeanor. Upon further questioning, the group caught stealing were discovered as the drivers of food trucks for several local developments, including the one they were caught in.

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center Closed

Precautions against the spread of the COVID-19 virus has caused the temporary closure of the Visitor Center at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge.

“We are committed to doing our part to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to ensure the health and safety of our employees, volunteers, and you—our friends and neighbors,′ said a statement from the Refuge.

Refuge lands, including nature trails and outdoor recreational activities remain open and accessible to the public from sunrise to sunset.

Hayes Equine - We all dread the day when we walk out to feed in the morning and find our horse has been down and rolling most of the night.

We get our horse up, give it some Banamine that our vet has wisely told us to keep on hand, and give the vet a call to let them know. An hour later, the vet arrives and performs an exam. She’s fairly certain something is markedly wrong, as our beloved horse’s heart rate is high, and the vet can feel something gas filled in a place where there shouldn’t be gas.

Her recommendation is to take it to the nearest referral hospital, as surgery may be needed to correct this problem.

So now what? Colic surgery starts at about $6,000 for a standard surgery with a few days of aftercare and no complications.

Start adding difficult procedures during the surgery, prolonged recovery time, or any complications, that price can rise dramatically to $10,000 or more. For most of us, we don’t have that kind of money on hand. So how are we going to pay for it? Most of us don’t carry major medical insurance on our beloved pet. Well recently, several companies have adopted programs that back their products by shelling out the money if your horse winds up needing surgery while on their supplements. Here are just a few and their requirements: SmartPak Equine – ColiCare™ Smartpak offers up to $10,000 in surgical reimbursement (including pre-op, surgery, and post-op care) if you feed one of their seven supplements that benefit the hindgut. To be eligible, a horse must be accepted into the program and be fed the supplement at the recommended doses. The horse must also have a veterinarian perform a yearly physical exam and dentistry, and receive routine deworming and vaccinations as recommended by that veterinarian. Horses that are not eligible are those that have had previous colic surgery, are chronically colicky, or have colicked within the last twelve months. To sign up, pick one of the supplements and purchase it in the SmartPak Strips, which ship automatically every 28 days. At checkout, you will be asked if you would like to enroll your horse in the ColiCare™ program.

Platinum Performance –

Platinum Colic Coverage™ Platinum Performance offers two supplements that are eligible for $8,000 of reimbursement, and five supplements that are eligible for $10,000 of reimbursement should your horse need colic surgery. To be eligible, horses must be over 5 months of age, the owner must fill out an application, have a veterinarian perform dentistry every year, receive annual vaccinations from their veterinarian, and be directed by their veterinarian on a deworming schedule after the performance of a fecal egg count. The horse must be fed the minimum dose of one of the six eligible supplements daily. Horses not eligible for the program are those that have had previous colic surgery, have a history of chronic colic, or have colicked within the last 12 months, whether treated by a veterinarian or not.

To enroll, head to the Platinum Performance website and fill out their application. Then choose one of their six eligible supplements on auto-shipment.

Arenus Animal Health – ColicAssurance Program™ Arenus Animal Health offers up to $10,000 to horses enrolled in their Wellness Program. In this program, horses can be covered regardless of their previous colic history. It will also reimburse owners for both medical and surgical colics, as a horse that is on fluids for colic can easily rack up a bill. Once enrolled, one of their professionals will select their eligible Wellness Program, either using the AssureGuard and Assure Plus supplements, or the AssureGuard Gold supplement.

These supplements must be fed according to the professional’s recommendation. Horses must also be seen yearly by their veterinarian for a physical exam and dentistry, as well as receive vaccinations and a deworming schedule that includes at least two yearly dewormings from the veterinarian. The horse should also have a yearly fecal egg count performed.

Horses not eligible for enrollment are those that have had more than one colic surgery, have been diagnosed with certain problems, or if they have had colic from anything other than digestive issues. Arenus also doesn’t cover mini horses, mules, donkeys, zebras, or any combination thereof. To enroll, head over to the Arenus Animal Health website and complete

their online enrollment form.

It’s important to remember that with all of these programs, they are not considered an insurance program. These programs offer reimbursement if your horse winds up needing colic surgery. So, you’ll still need a way to front that bill, whether it’s with a credit card or something like CareCredit®.

All of these programs require documentation to be submitted before reimbursement can occur.

The biggest question everyone has with each of these programs is how difficult will it be to get reimbursement? Do they actually pay out? The answer is yes. Annie Favreau, a friend of Dr. Meghan’s, had her barrel horse enrolled in the ColiCare™ program. When Rocky colicked in 2016, ColiCare™ reimbursed the Favreaus for the cost of Rocky’s surgery. Johnnie worked at Homco, Inc. for many years and Wal-Mart for 15 years. She was a loving wife, mom and grandmother. Johnnie was an excellent seamstress; her clothes looked like they came out of the store. Many grandchildren enjoyed the dresses, books and many other items she made for them. She was a member of the Northside Church of Christ.

Mrs. Fuller also taught school for 22 years.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, James and Judy of Royce City, Texas and Phil and Debbie of Frisco, Texas. Mrs. Fuller was blessed with 5 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

Richard Agan was born January 12, 1934 in McKinney, TX the son of Ernest and Allie (Honea) Agan. Richard married Clois Rushing on August 19, 1978, she preceded him in death on August 18, 2019. Mr. Agan had served in the US Army and was honorably discharged. He had an incredible work ethic that was reflected in his entrepreneurial achievements.

Richard had served the Lord as a pastor, and he was a machinist by trade, a farmer, and was the owner of several businesses including Agan Machine Shop in Trenton, TX. Richard is survived by his daughter-Donna Agan and husband Larry Mowatt of Allen, TX., sons-Richard Agan and wife Diane of Melissa, Rocky Agan and wife Cathy of Blue Ridge,

RUTH BEAN WALTERS Ruth left this world to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 16, 2020.

Ruth was born on July 26, 1921 in Randolph Texas to parents Thomas Luther Davis and Nellie Mae Leever Davis. Ruth attended school in Randolph and married Clyde Thomas Bean on May 1, 1938. Later they moved to Dallas TX and Plano TX where Ruth worked for Rockwell International for thirty-one years. Ruth and Clyde had one daughter Brenda Bean Passwaters.

Ruth loved the Lord and served as a children’s worker at Love Field Baptist Church in Dallas TX, First Baptist Church in Plano TX and Meadows Baptist Church in Plano TX. In June 1984, after retiring, the Beans moved to Bonham TX where they joined Calvary Baptist Church. Ruth continued to serve the Lord as the children’s director at Calvary. Clyde Bean passed away in 1993. Ruth married Luther Walters on October 14, 1995. In 2000, Ruth retired from children’s ministry after serving over 50 years. Ruth loved working in the yard and grew many beautiful flowers.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, one brother Burgher Davis of Plano TX, two sisters Nina Adair of Denison TX and Jane Adcock of Bonham TX, daughter Brenda and son-in-law Lew Passwaters of Bonham TX, and one stepdaughter Joann McTier of Corpus Christi TX. Surviving are her husband Luther Walters of Allen TX; grandchildren: Brian Passwaters of Carrolton TX, Kevin Passwaters with wife Susan of League City TX, Mark Passwaters with wife Rachel of Little Elm TX and Kimberly (Passwaters) Kleinman with fiancé Tim Kleinman of Midlothian TX and Scott Hogle with wife Tammye of Garland TX. Great grandchildren: Matthew, Ryan, Hannah, Edem, Harvy, Calvin, Michael and Andrew. Several nieces and nephews to cherish her memory.

On March 21, 2020, family visitation was from 1pm to 2pm at Calvary Baptist Church, 913 South 5th Street, Bonham TX 75418. The funeral services began at 2pm under the direction of Ted Dickey Funeral Home of Plano TX, with Brother in Christ Adam Barker officiating. The burial followed at Willow Wild Cemetery.

Don was born on October 30, 1940 in Dodd City, Texas, the son of Willard William Peebles and Donnis Nadine Dodd Peebles. He was of the Baptist faith, having been baptized at the young age of 15. Don was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dodd City. He enjoyed hunting, working on antique cars, and watching westerns. Don was passionate about his work. He was a truck driver for 12 years and a roofer for 43 years. He believed if you found a job you loved, you’d never work a day in your life. Doodle was born on August 21, 1936 in Tulip, Texas, the son of Charlie Shufford “Shuff” Gibbs and Rena Mae Eskue Gibbs. He graduated from North Fannin High School in Ivanhoe, Texas. Doodle went to Auctioneer school after high school. He was an Auctioneer for 45 years. He married Jan Kueckelhan on June 22, 1956 in Corinth, Texas. Doodle and Jan had a collaborative and caring relationship. It was based on mutual support and a deep love for each other. Together they raised two wonderful children. They were together for 63 years before his passing. Doodle was a member of the Duplex Baptist church. He was a person of faith and lived life serving others. Doodle was an inspiration to all who knew him. There was nothing he liked better than an interesting conversation with a good (or new) friend. He could have an engaging conversation with anyone. It was often said that there wasn’t a stranger that Doodle didn’t know-or a smile kept to oneself.

He was a kind and gentle person who loved spending time with family and friends. His indomitable spirit encouraged his family and friends to persist in the face of many struggles. He was a pillar and mentor of the community. Doodle’s children and grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life. The legacy of Doodle’s kind spirit, faith in God, and zest for life will live on through them. Doodle is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Mary Kae Gibbs Chaffin, brother, Floyd Ray Gibbs, and sisters, Phyllis Dean Gibbs Russell and Rita Lou Gibbs McRae. She was a graduate of Gober High School and she attended a Business School in Dallas. She married Jimmy Ray Green July 23, 1954 at Gober. She was a member of the Northside Church of Christ in Bonham and she had taught Bible Classes for at least 60 years. She enjoyed baking strudel, cinnamon bread and holiday candy were among her specialties. She also enjoyed canning vegetables.

Shilo Cemetery Volunteer Work Day #2 Saturday, March 28 Volunteers needed to help clean up this 170-yearold cemetery that has been neglected for over 40 years. Good progress was made on our first work day last month with piles of brambles, trees, and undergrowth removed from parts of the cemetery; but many sections are still untouched.

Home Country Slim Randles Spring mornings are a lot like Christmas. Each day we get up and go out into the yard, or walk along the creek or visit the horses in the pasture. And each day, each morning, we find something new the sun has brought us.

Pinfeather leaves of an unbelievable green now start showing on cottonwoods that have stood like stark ghostly frames all through the cold winter.

Hopeful blades of grass peek through clumps of brown left over from last summer’s verdant pasture. Everywhere we look there is something new and different.

A lot of this Christmasin-spring is kept just among us, because we might be accused of being ... well ... poetic if we told people why we were really carrying that coffee cup out into the yard.

So we say lame things like “I think I’ll get some of that fresh air this morning.” What we really mean, of course, is “I want to see if Richardson’s bay mare has had that foal yet.”

Some of us have worked very hard last fall and winter to prepare for this spring. By grafting.

OK, we have a Granny Smith apple tree.

Let’s see if we can’t get a branch of Rome Beauties or Jonagolds to grow on it, too.

And we understand completely that where we live no olive tree can survive the winter.

That isn’t supposed to stop us from trying, is it?

Nature pitches us a boatload of challenges each day that we’re alive. This plant needs more water than falls naturally here. That tree can’t take the temperatures we get.

This little tree needs soil with more organic matter in it.

And those challenges are the stuff winter dreams are made of. We do the best we can to cure the lack, the freeze, the drought, and then we wait for April. We wait impatiently until we can come out of the house some morning and check the grafts on the apple tree and see tiny green leaves coming on the grafted branch. We search the bare ground where we planted that new kind of seed that won’t grow here - to see if it’ll grow here.

It is a continuing feast of green, a triumph of anticipation. An April morning can make us want to sing.

player award and senior Noel Cannaday received the defensive MVP after the Eagles with a 13-1 record won their third district title in the last four years, made their first third-round advance since 2017 and finished 30-7 overall.

By Rich Hilliard ALVORD -- Senior Luke Porter won his weight class at the Region VI Division III Boys Meet on March 13 -- leading three Bonham qualifiers for state powerlifting.

Porter triumphed in the 198 weight class, amassing 1,505 pounds via his efforts in the three categories -- 600 squat, 365 bench, 540 deadlift -- as Bonham finished fourth as a team with 20 points, trailing only Boyd (26), Whitesboro (25) and Bells (25).

Junior Kamron Rogers also won the 242 weight class at the same regional meet to advance with 1,490 cumulative pounds -610 squat, 360 bench, 520 deadlift -- for Leonard, which placed 10th via his seven points earned for a first-place finish. (Secondplace finishers score five points for their teams; third-place garner three; fourth net two and fifth garner one.)

Porter and Rogers also qualified last year for the state competition -- which had been scheduled this year for March 28 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.

However, the suspension by the University Interscholastic League on March 13 of all sanctioned athletic competitions scheduled for March 16-29 -- in an attempt to lessen the spread of the coronavirus -- will delay the boys state event.

Likewise, the girls state meet -scheduled to be March 20 at the Extraco Center in Waco -- has been postponed.

Junior Nick Rhinehart of Bonham broke the Region VI Division III bench-press record in the 148 weight class en route to advancing as a runner-up to the state competition with 1,135 cumulative pounds: 430 squat, 305 bench (record), 400 deadlift.

Senior Aiden Straub of Bonham also qualified for state competition via the 198 weight class as the runner-up with a cumulative 1,435 pounds: 560 squat, 330 bench, 545 deadlift.

Junior Elijah McFarland of Bonham will be a state alternate after finishing third with a cumulative 1,400 pounds in the super heavy weight class: 510 squat, 415 bench, 475 deadlift.

Note: Senior Jacob Kennedy of Bonham also competed at the Region VI Division III meet on March 13 in the 220 division, after originally being a regional alternate.

Bonham’s Passanisi state-lift-bound Bonham sophomore Jordan Passanisi has qualified for the state powerlifting competition.

To advance, Passanisi tied for second place in the 198 weight class at the Region VI Division III Girls Meet on March 7 at Chico High School. She had a squat of 330 pounds, bench of 205 and deadlift of 300 to accumulate an 835 total.

Both schools had its spring semester sports seasons prematurely ended on March 16 as the National Junior College Athletic Association joined other collegiate associations nationwide in canceling all athletic competition for the remainder of the spring semester -- in an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus in the United States.

Senior Holden Reaves and junior Weston Whiteside each received an honorable mention for Sam Rayburn, which finished winless in district play.

Sam Rayburn will have mostly different district opponents for the next two seasons as a part of the new 142A: Celeste, Honey Grove, Merit Bland, Tom Bean, Trenton and Wolfe City.

The only holdover from the Rebels’ previous district will be Tom Bean -- though the rest have frequently been aligned with Sam Rayburn in the past for district competition.
