Online Alzheimer’s Help Always Available

Do you remember the story of Robinson Crusoe? He was stranded on a desert island and forced to fend for himself to survive. It was written

by Daniel Defoe and first published in 1719, and is still in print.

You may be feeling like Mr. Crusoe right now as the pandemic stretches on. It can be especially hard if you are a caregiver for someone living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia.

You are not alone.

While health care physicians, nurses, techs and others fight on the front line against COVID-19, the Alzheimer’s Association and its volunteers are answering the question of how to continue caring for the caregivers who care for the 400,000 plus Texans living with Alzheimer’s disease.

The need for supporting family and professional caregivers is greater now than ever before. In response to these challenging times, the Association is offering more on line support groups led by experienced support group facilitators via conference lines.

The Association offers on line support groups across Texas for caregivers, individuals living with Alzheimer’s and others dealing with the disease. All support groups are facilitated by trained individuals.

Lone Star Healthy Streams – 2/4/20 A Watershed Protection Plan Outreach

Friday, February 18, 2022, the Fannin County AgriLife Extension Service held a workshop at the Derrell Hall Education Center in Bonham with information on how property owners/managers can best be part of the massive task of reducing the level of E. coli bacteria coming from properties located in the watershed. A watershed is that area of land that water flows across, through, or under on its way to a common point in a stream, river, lake, or ocean. Extension agent Cody Maxwell began the workshop by first thanking all those who assisted in organizing the event before summing up what attendees to the workshop could expect. He then introduced Extension Program Specialist, Leanne Wiley.

Leanne gave an overview of the Lone Star Healthy Streams program, noting that if any had questions they needed assistance with after today’s workshop, they could contact her at the contact information on the back of the Lone Star Healthy Streams brochure which was leanne.wiley@ag.tamu.edu, ph#979-862-8072. She then proceeded to explain the goals of educating producers of the best management practices (BMPs) to reduce bacterial contamination in the runoff that comes from their lands.

Ms. Wiley described the three types of terrain, “upland”, “floodplain” and riparian zones, and why it is important to know which zone you are in. She explained “point” and “nonpoint” sources of pollution noting the four major categories of “non-point” pollution is (1) fecal bacteria, (2) nutrients we apply to the land, (3) sediment that occurs from erosion, and (4) toxic and hazardous substances. She noted the main focus of the workshop would be fecal bacteria which come

from humans (impaired septic systems,) domestic animals, livestock, and wildlife.

She touched on how nutrients that are not applied at appropriate levels can cause plants to die and run off into water causing damage; sediment caused by the moving of soil into a waterway can cause cloudy water damaging aquatic vegetation and of course the harm toxic chemical spills, pesticides can bring about.

Ms. Wiley then spoke on the laws and policies dealing with the protection of surface waters starting with the Federal Water Pollution Control Act that came into existence in 1948 and is today called the “Clean Water Act.” Continuing she noted how the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) delegates the regulation and maintenance of water standards in Texas to the TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) and TSSWCB (Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board) with TCEQ focusing on “point source” pollution (i.e.- factories, oil rigs, etc.) and “non-point source” pollution (i.e.– livestock, wildlife, etc.) being the focus of TSSWCB. She noted it is the role of the TCEQ to identify all the water bodies in Texas, determine the designated use (recreational, drinking water, etc.) develop the standard, and evaluate every three years the quality of the water body, which is reported every two years to the EPA to determine if the waterway should be listed on the impaired waters list (303D list of the Clean Water Act.) Once a waterway is on that list, actions are put into place to attempt to get it off that list. The initial action is to assess the water to determine what the TMDL (total maximum daily load) is of bacteria (or pollutant) the waterway can handle to maintain an acceptable number of bacteria, then initiate a plan to reduce the pollut-

ant/pollutants that pushed it beyond its TMDL to get it off the impaired waters list. Wrapping up this first portion of the program, Ms. Wiley stressed the importance of a community-driven management plan such as the Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Protection Plan to address, prevent and confront any water quality problems identified. Noting that due to it being voluntary and not “agency driven” (regulated) “most would like to see the community-driven side utilized first, before bringing in the agencies to heavily regulate.” After acknowledging that funding for this 319 program came from the TSSWCB (which trickled down from the Clean Waters Act to support these operations) she thanked the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, David Cowan and his NTMWD team, and Cody Maxwell with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and yielded the floor to North Texas Municipal Water District Watershed Manager David Cowan.

Mr. Cowan began by noting the process to establish a “Watershed Protection Plan” for Bois d’Arc Lake had been going on for approximately a year with more diligence being exerted in the last eight months. He then mentioned a grant that pays for courses through AgriLife Extension, for maintenance of aerobic septic systems, available for any with aerobic systems (within the watershed) and who are interested. He then went through a detailed explanation of the watershed approach which is a partnership of community members and agricultural/ technical specialists, to voluntarily protect water quality through voluntary actions that can be done (nothing regulatory about it.)

that some day I would be free again – my concern was more of “when”. I admit that there were several times that our liberation seemed mighty slow in coming, seeing the “barbed wire” fences and manned towers just outside my window were constant tests of hope.

It was now the early part of March, 1945 and with the weather improving our forces were able to begin making some strategic advances.

All information that we were given indicated the Russians were moving in the direction of our camp.

Noting that the management practices being offered for cattle can be applied to the raising of goats, sheep, etc., she referenced the Texas A&M AgriLife website for those wishing to access the manual detailing the prac-

tices she would be covering.

The website https://agrilifelearn.tamu.edu has available to download at no charge, a collection of Lone Star Healthy Streams manuals including a Horse Manual, a Feral Hog Manual as well as the Cattle Manual. In her lecture, Ms. Wiley noted that by implementing the best management practices, producers will not only help to improve the water quality in the watershed but will ultimately help their bottom line by impacting the overall health of the animals being raised and the quality of pastureland. One of the many recommendations made

by Ms. Wiley was to know what kind of nutrients are in your soil by having a soil test done. She stated a soil test can be had at a minimal charge by getting a soil test sample bag and soil information form from Extension

Discussion, regarding EMS monthly report for January 2022: Bonham Fire Department Chief Scott Ridling began his report by noting that a new ambulance the department has been waiting for the last 8 to 9 months will be here next week and believes it will be ready for service in 2 to 3 weeks. He noted that in the last 180 days there have been 70 Covid calls as compared to the previous 180 days having had 93 Covid calls. He expressed his hope that those calls are decreasing and did note that there seem to be less severe infections. There were 450 transports last month and hospitals seem to have adequate space available. He noted the department was one employee short and would soon begin the hiring process. After his report, a discussion ensued regarding the approaching hazardous weather, the cost of the new ambulance, and the rising cost of supplies due to the recent supply shortages.

7. Discussion, consideration, and action to Order the May 7, 2022, Special Election: After Judge Moore asked if any had comments, Commissioner Magness made a motion to Order the Special Election with Commission Self seconding the motion and the motion passed.

8. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding Burn Ban for Fannin County: Fannin County Emer-

there were a few fires in the past week while the burn ban was in effect which resulted in citations being issued and noted one of the fires was almost inaccessible due to the condition of the ground (off Hwy 82.) He then stated that after speaking with Fire Department personnel, the consensus is that conditions are still not favorable to lift the Burn Ban. After some discussion regarding the approaching hazardous weather, motion was made by Commissioner Self and seconded

by Commissioner Magness to continue the burn ban for another week.

9. Discussion and report of monies collected by the District Clerk’s office for January 2022; $23,124.23: Judge Moore noted this was coming from Nancy Young’s office.

10. Discussion, consideration, and action to reappoint Monica Kissling to the Fannin County Hospital Authority for a three-year term beginning 03/28/2020: Judge Moore noted reappointing Monica Kissling for a three-year term should have been done earlier. Commissioner Magness then made the motion to reappoint Ms. Kissling to that three-year term and after confirming the date of 3/28/2020 was correct for the term to have begun, Commissioner Self seconded the motion and the motion passed. After the motion, Judge Moore noted it is a volunteer position and expressed his appreciation for all the volunteers who help the county.

11. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve short plat; 7 lots ranging from 1.02 -3.0 acres on County Road 4027 in Savoy: Fannin County Development Services Director Di

Motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve with Commissioner Self seconding the motion and the motion passed.

Discussion, consideration, and action to approve Modification of Intergovernmental Agreement between Fannin County and the United States Marshals Service, Modification No. 3, the addition of language to Sections: Medical Services, Guard Services, Restrictive Housing and Suicide Prevention and adding Sections: Video Conferencing, Voter Registration, Body Camera Information Requests: Judge Moore explained that this was addressed at the previous week’s meeting, but sometime after that meeting he received notice from the Marshal’s Service that the wording contained in the first submission was in error and had to be redone. Motion was made by Commissioner Self to approve the Agreement with Commission Magness seconding the motion and the motion passed.

18. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Self expressed his hope that everyone stays warm, dry and safe during the inclement weather and wished all a good week.

Commissioner Magness asked residents to notify their commissioners of any downed trees or limbs they come across on the roadways so the county can know which roads

need their attention. He reminded all to get out and vote.

After a question was relayed about how people can get in touch with their commissioner, Commissioner Self stated that anyone having trouble contacting their commissioner by phone can call the Sheriff’s Office and relay any problem existing.

Judge Moore commented on the weather noting that they will be watching the roads closely to determine whether administrative offices will be closing. He noted the county does not salt highway roads like Hwy 273, 271 and 78 as those are TX DOT roads and that the agenda for next week

On another note, he spoke about 5/21/19 how he had sent an e-mail to Congressman Pat Fallon to ask him to urge Biden to act with swift harsh consequences against Russia involving the Ukrainian invasion. Over the years I have tried several different recipes for biscuits. I finally have found one to be really good and I hope you will give this a try!

For those that follow me on Facebook, I promised I would let everyone have the recipe.

So here it is!

Preheat your oven to 475 degrees.

Grate frozen butter and add 2 1/2 c. flour with salt and toss to quickly distribute. Chill in the freezer for 10 minutes.

Make a well in the flour and add buttermilk straight from the fridge. Stir about 15 times or until the flour is moistened. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a rectangle.

Fold dough in half, turn, and press it into rectangle again and repeat 4 times. Flour your rolling pin and roll dough to ½” thickness. Cut with a 2 ½” floured round cutter, making sure not to twist the biscuits. Line the baking sheet with parchment, and arrange biscuits close together. Bake for 15 minutes and then brush tops with melted butter after removing from oven.

I decided we need a good biscuit recipe since it has been so hard sometimes to buy canned biscuits at the store.

Anyway, hope they turn out as good as they did for me!!

Christ, Ourselves and Judgment

The apostle Paul spoke the gospel to Felix “concerning the faith in Christ” (Acts 24:24).

We must know Christ. Peter said to Jesus, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).

The apostles declared “we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God” (John 6:69). John asked, “Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1John 5:5).

John tells that “this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous” (1 John 5:3). We know that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

We are told not be deceived, “he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous” (1 John 3:7).

We must reign ourselves in concerning sinful appetites and temptations. God’s grace teaches us to live, “denying ungodliness and worldly lusts” (Titus 2:12). Temperance is listed in the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-

24. We also find temperance list between ‘knowledge’ and ‘patience’ in 2 Peter 1:6.

We must realize that “God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to the gospel” (Rom 2:16). “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one

may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10).

Consider Christ, Yourself, and the Judgment to come.

Will you just tremble or will you obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 49 degrees; 2.25 feet low. Following last weekends arctic blast the water temperature has rose six degrees on the main lake. This has our hybrid and striped bass on the move. Look for fish in the 25-35 feet range using soft plastic swimbaits. Blue catfish have been good up to 64 pound catches on cut gizzard shad and cut bluegill. These fish are on the move right now and can be found literally from 2-45 feet of water. Channel catfish bite has picked up over baited holes using prepared baits in 35-45 feet of water.

Largemouth bass are good in water 3-5 feet slow rolling square bill crankbaits and throwing brush hogs.

Shallow docks are working best.

Texoma GOOD. Water lightly stained; 49 degrees; 0.87 feet low. Striped bass are good shifting into a spring pattern using Alambama rigs, and swimbaits with several 10-12 pound catches. Some white bass mixed in with stripers. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.

Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 48 degrees; 3.88 feet low. Fishing is the same as we bundle up after another cold front. Crappie are good on jigs and minnows 20-30 feet of water near condos and trees. Fish several locations as they are starting to run to the mouths of creeks staging for the spawn, and sometimes they will be suspended in the middle of nowhere. White bass are good in 10-30 feet of water on humps and ledges. Starting to move shallow, and some schools are starting to appear in the creeks for the spawn. Blue catfish are super great in 25-35 feet of water drifting with cut gizzard shad, some bites shallow in 6-15 feet of water. Bass are good on suspended and deep diving crankbaits, jigs, and soft plastics in 10-25 feet of water on structure. Square bill bite is picking up in 1-5 feet of water.

Jimmy Freeman, 87, of Honey Grove, Texas passed away Thursday, February 17, 2022.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 20, 2022, at 2:30 P.M. in the Honey Grove Church of Christ. Mr. Buddy Freeman and Judd Ramsey officiated. Family visitations were held Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the Cooper Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Honey Grove from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Serving as pallbearers were Jeremy Clark, Jimmy Paul Smith, Jonathan Smith, Jordan Freeman, Austin Clark, and Trevor Williams.

Honorary pallbearers were Tyler Williams, Ashton Sandlin, Jaden Sandlin, Laramie Williams, Garrett Smith, Chandler Smith, Jaxon Clark, and Alex Clark.

Jimmy was born in Anton, Texas, to Oscar and Clara (Butler) Freeman. He joined the National Guard and then went on to work many years for Campbell Soup.

Jimmy was also a farmer and rancher until his retirement.

Jimmy joined the Honey Grove Church of Christ in 1941 where he served many years a deacon.

Jimmy married the love of his life Bobbie Lou Shipman in Honey Grove, Texas, on December 21, 1953. In their sixty-eight years of marriage, they raised four children, seven grandchildren, and eighteen great grandchildren.

Jimmy is survived by his wife Bobbie Freeman, their daughters Linda Clark, Carolyn Freeman, and Rita Smith and husband Rickey, their son Buddy Freeman and wife Traci as well as grandchildren Jeremy Clark and wife Amy, Amanda Clark, Lindsie Sandlin, Jimmy Paul Smith and wife Brooke, Jonathan Smith and wife Ashleigh, Paige Ramsey and husband Judd and Jordan Freeman and wife Maysen.

Their great grandchildren are Austin Clark, Trevor Williams , Tyler Williams Ashton Sandlin, Jaden Sandlin, Bryleigh Clark, Laramie Williams, Jaxon Clark, Alex Clark, Ava Sandlin, Garrett Smith, Aubree Smith, Chandler Smith, Kyleigh Smith, Kamryn Smith,Reily Ramsey, Elsie Ramsey, and Chandler Freeman.

He is also survived by his brother Terry Freeman and wife Sarah, sisters Gwen Pettit and husband Bill, Barbara Kilpatrick and husband Sam, Nancy Whitten and husband Randy, and Deidra Newhouse and husband Mark.

He is preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Clara (Butler) Freeman, one son-inlaw Artie Clark, and his great granddaughter Katelyn Clark.

Bonham- Judy “G” Outlaw of Bonham passed away with family and friends at her bedside in her home on Friday February 18, 2022. Judy was born December 31, 1940 in Lawton Oklahoma the daughter of Noel and Willie (Whitehead) Ray. She moved to Dallas, TX. at the age of 20 where she met Jim Outlaw while working at a Sanger Harris Department Store, they were married 30 plus years until Jim’s passing.

Judy and Jim were longtime residents of Fannin County with many dear and close friends.

Together they owned and operated western wear stores in Bonham for many years and made many lifelong friends. Judy was a 20 year member of the Republican Women’s Association, and also a member of the Rotary Club of Bonham.

Judy’s biggest accomplishment in life is how she lived her life for Jesus Christ and her family. She is a proud member of the Bois D’ Arc Creek Cowboy Church, and loved Bible study at the Methodist Church, and the Butler family. Her friend of over 50 years, Beverly Rainbolt of Bonham, has many great laughs and memories that Judy treasured. Her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews love their “G” and her sister Mary Beth brought her much joy by telling about their daily journeys, and she gave them encouragement and prayers, always.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents Noel and Willie Ray, and husband Jim Outlaw. She is survived by son David and wife Carra Outlaw of Bonham, TX., son Warren and wife Shirley Outlaw of Oklahoma City, OK. daughter Cheryl Byrd Outlaw of Durant, OK., son Terry and wife Kellie Henrie of Pauls Valley, OK., daughter Deanna Alder, grandchildren Jace and Brittany Outlaw, Jordan Outlaw, Casey Outlaw, Erica Byrd, Allie Flandemeir and Cole Alder, her sister and soulmate Mary Beth and Sid Hardy of Oklahoma City, OK., nephew John and wife Terrie Hardy, Alisha Hardy, Trey Hardy, and their children who were so special to her.

Graveside services were held Monday February 21 at 2:00 PM at the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Visitations were held Sunday February 20, 2022 6:00 – 7:30 at the Bois D’ Arc Creek Cowboy Church Bonham.

Bonham-Cassidy Norma (Kapaska) Shelton, age 29, of Windom, Texas was born on December 5, 1992 in Provo, UT to Greg Ernest Sauter and April Ann Ellison. She passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022 in Fannin County, Texas.

Cassidy married Stephen Lee Shelton on June 23, 2018 in Provo, UT. She worked for Security Finance as branch manager. Cassidy was a bright and beautiful young wife, mother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, and friend. She enjoyed doing make up and nails, crafts with the kids, camping and spending time with her family. Cassidy was an amazing cook. Family and friends also knew her as Cass, Animal, and Duckie. She is of the Baptist faith.

Cameron passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler, Texas.

Cameron was born on December 19, 1956, in Bonham, Texas, the son of George Dunlap and Lina Maver Johnson Dunlap. He was a 1975 graduate of Bonham High School where he played football and ran track. Cameron attended Texas College in Tyler, Texas.

He was a hardworking man; he worked at Tyler Pipe and Steel for 43 years. Cameron dearly loved his children and grandchildren.

He will be greatly missed.

Cameron is preceded in death by his parents; brothers George Henry Dunlap, Lowell Dunlap, Saul Dunlap, Lenwood Dunlap, and Joe Dunlap; and sisters Gussie Dunlap and Cora Lee Dunlap.

He leaves behind to cherish memories of him his sons, Ira Dunlap and wife Melissa of Seattle, Washington and Isaac Dunlap and wife Tasha of Tyler, Texas; daughters, Antoinette Dunlap of Tyler, Texas and Nicole Dunlap of Dallas, Texas; brothers, Arlie Dunlap of Arlington, Texas, Gregory Dunlap of Amarillo, Texas, Gregg Dunlap of Sherman, Texas, and Thaddus Dunlap of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Velma Dunlap of Bonham, Texas, Charlene Shaw and husband Clifford of Bonham, Texas, and Joann Dunlap Morrison of Arlington, Texas; 14 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of friends.

Bonham-Paul Douglas Vaughn, age 88, was born on January 5, 1934 in Bonham, Texas to Walter Clarence Vaughn, Sr. and Ruth (Hill) Vaughn. He passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas.

Paul married Alice Marie (Mitchell) Vaughn on June 28, 1952 in Bonham, Texas; she preceded him in death on May 23, 2008. He served in the National Guard. Paul worked as a barber before going to work at General Cable; he retired after 30 plus years.

Even though he was retired he never stopped working the cattle ranch and farming. Paul was outgoing, very hard working, and liked to go dancing. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. Paul was a member of the Central Baptist Church.

He is survived by children, Susan Skinner and husband David of Bonham, TX; Kenneth Vaughn of Bonham, TX; grandchildren, Jason Skinner and Jessica, Jim Skinner and Heather, Julie Grinie and Brian, Shannon Skinner; great grandchildren, Katie Brook Skinner, at N.M. Holliman, AFB, Zoe Alexandra Skinner, and Meredith Isabella Skinner.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents.

June 16, 1940 – February 16, 2022 Billie Hamilton was born on June 16, 1940 to Bill Collins and Lucille Branch in Amarillo, Texas. She met her Lord and Savior on February 16, 2022 surrounded by family at Medical City in Plano.

Billie worked as a nurse for many years and retired from the VA in 1996 where she worked for 20+ years. She was also a private duty caregiver for 10-12 years. She was loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an active member of the Kingdom

Hall of Jehovah’s Witness. She loved Jehovah and prayed daily for her family and friends. Billie was a friend of many and never met a stranger, she loved kids and dogs, especially Hershey whom she loved like a human.

Billie was known as Billie, Mom, Granny Goose by so many and Grandma by Alli Jo. She was loved by so many and she loved so many in return.

She is preceded in death by her parents Bill Collins and Lucille Branch, brothers Ron, Jim and Ken Collins, son-inlaw David Hine and grandson David Alan Hine.

Jimmie Evans

Billy Ray Suitor, 92, of Dodd City, Texas, passed away February 19, 2022. Billy was born September 16, 1929 to Montey Ray Suitor and Ann Vietta Hill in Fannin County. Billy graduated from Windom High School in 1947 and soon after joined the Navy in 1948. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Mae Butler, on March 23, 1949 and they enjoyed 62 years of marriage before she passed away in July 2012. They had one child, Shirley Carol “Polly” Scott. Billy retired from the Navy and went on to work for the Army in Fort Hood in civil service until his retirement in 1992 after 40 years of honorable service to his country. Soon after he and Dot retired near the land where he was born, just north of Windom.

Billy loved people and was a very happy person with a quick smile, a ready hug, and a long handshake. He loved country music, especially George Strait, his church family of Windom Methodist Church, his country, his family, and his Jesus.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents Montey Ray Suitor and Ann Vietta, his wife Dorothy “Dot” Suitor, brothers Charles and Jerry Suitor. He is survived by his daughter Shirley “Polly” Scott of Jefferson Texas, his grandson Chris Creasey of Richardson, his granddaughter Angel and her husband and Chris Kirby of Dodd City Texas, his great grandchildren Logan and Gavin Kirby, his sister in laws Ann Smith, Judy Witcher and Judy Suitor.

by Rich Hilliard Former Bonham softball standouts Chyrsi Hemby and Joli Kirkpatrick have started strongly in the sport for Austin College in Sherman, through eight games.

Hemby reached a two-week break in the Roos’ schedule with a .481 slugging percentage, .414 on-base-percentage and .370 batting average. She had doubled for three of her 10 hits, scored six runs and collected two RBI, walks and stolen bases.

Kirkpatrick had a .458 slugging percentage, .407 onbase-percentage and a .333 batting average. She had scored five runs and driven

Reigning Class 1A State girls’ basketball champion Dodd City extended its title defense on Tuesday, Feb. 22, with a 48-36 win over Bloomburg in a Region III-1A quarterfinal at Grand Saline High School.

With the win, the Lady Hornets qualified for their eighth-straight trip to a regional tournament in the girls’ sport -- with a fifth trip to the 1A State Tournament in the last six years being possible.

In the area round, District 23-1A champion Dodd City defeated Henrietta Midway, 47-36, on Feb. 18 and Bloomburg, the 24-1A champion, topped Newcastle, 67-60.

The current girls’ basketball postseason equates Dodd City’s 12th-consecutive -- the last 10 via undefeated district titles.

Meanwhile, Sam Rayburn and Ector concluded its respective seasons in the area round on Feb 18.

Quinlan Boles edged the Lady Rebels, 53-50.

Throckmorton defeated the Lady Eagles, 45-27.

It equated Sam Rayburn’s deepest girls’ postseason advance and first as a district champion in the sport in eight years.

The advance represented the Lady Eagles’ fifth girls’ area-round basketball trip in the last six years.

Need to take a break from your Spring Break?

Why not stop by the Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site for a day of great experiences. On Wednesday, March 16, 2022, we will have free craft activities and games available from 12:00 p.m.

– 3:00 p.m. Activities will include Flowers for Miss Lou, Pom-Pom Poppers, and Barn Owl Pals. A cattle roping activity and croquet game will also be available (weather dependent). The craft activities are designed for children between the ages of 6-12, but everyone is welcome to attend! You may come and go as you

please. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

We encourage visitors to wear masks, but we will not require that they be worn in order to participate.

We will also have tours available for the Rayburn house. March 5, 2022 at Shilo Cemetery

Our little band of volunteers could use some help to get the last pockets of tangled thorny brush cleared out from Shilo Cemetery. This 170-year-old cemetery had been abandoned over 40 years before we stepped in to rescue it -- just as covid shut things down. Most of the past work has been by hand and it’s been painfully slow, considering that Shilo covers almost two acres. A couple of people with experience using weed saws (string trimmers with blades) to clear the brambles and saplings, and chain saws to cut up fallen branches and small trees, would go a long way.

And the more of us to gather and drag the debris out of the cemetery, the faster it will go.

Thanks to Preston Blackmon for allowing us to pile the brush outside the cemetery on his land for later removal by his crew, AND for installing a perimeter fence – so no more feral hogs and cattle trampling the gravestones.

Provided it’s not muddy, we’ll start at 8:00 a.m. and go until 5, -- any length of time you can help out will be greatly appreciated.
