Draft Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Protection Plan Released Public comment period through March 3

WYLIE, TX – Feb. 1, 2022: The North Texas Municipal

Water District (NTMWD) and the Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Partnership announce the opening of the formal public comment period for the draft Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Protection Plan (Draft Plan).

Comments will be accepted February 1 – March 3, 2022. A copy of the Draft Plan is available for download on the Bois d’Arc Lake website at: www.

Bois d’Arc Lake’s primary purpose is to provide drinking water to more than two million people in North Texas communities served by NTMWD, including Fannin County. Protecting water quality is important to preserving this critical water supply, especially as changes in land use and development occur in the watershed.

The implementation measures outlined in the Draft Plan are voluntary, and are aimed at providing increased educational programming and financial and technical resources to local stakeholders.

“Thanks to the avid participation and dedication of local stakeholders in the Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Partnership, this Draft Plan has been developed to proactively protect water quality and help prevent degradation in the future,” Cowan said.

Key area partners supporting the Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Protection Plan efforts include Fannin County, Fannin County Soil and Water Conservation District, Cities of Bonham and Honey Grove.

NTMWD has also worked closely with the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB) and the Texas A&M AgriLife Texas Water Resources Institute throughout development of the Draft Plan.

The days of my stay at Stalag Luft I turned into weeks and the weeks into months. I had spent another Christmas away from home, but this was the first one where I was not in contact with them.

It was an extremely

lonely time.

So as the afternoon sun began to dip lower in the west my loneliness would increase. Night time was approaching and the windows would be shut and the shutters closed and our contact with the outside world would be cut off.

Just before the shutters were closed we took turns to shout out our night vigil. Some would look to the west and shout “Come on Ike”.

Others would look to the east and yell “Come on Joe.” Our desire was that they would hurry.

Then the thought came to me “Our real freedom giver is already here.

Our bodies were impris-

oned by the Germans, but our spirit was made free through Jesus, the Christ.”

With the shutters closed and with darkness filling the room I would spend the first part of the night tuning into God’s presence. By “tuning in” I meant making personal contact with Him in prayer. While the darkness made the room a closet of prayer, for me, the words of Psalms 23 would become a light in the evening shadows.

In last weeks column we looked at “Facing Life’s Storms”. This week our thought centers on His presence as a source of strength.

Windy looked out the window. A great day for helping. Windy Wilson sets one day aside each week for helping others, you see, and this was helping day.

Mrs. Morris, he thought, checking on the calendar.

Yes, Mrs. Morris’s poor ol’ shed that’s leaning dangerously to one side.

“I can just whup over there today and see that gets fixated,” Windy said, smiling. “By dark, she’ll have a perp-up-and-dicular shed she can be proud of.”

Windy talks like that. A lot.

Armed with enough tools to recreate the city of Troy, Windy arrived at Mrs. Morris’s house and set to work. He rigged a come-along to a tree and used it to straighten the shed. Then, while he had it straight up, he attacked it with bracing.

Mrs. Morris brought him coffee a couple of times, and later had him in for lunch. Mr. Morris passed away several years ago, and some of these bigger chores were beyond her abilities.

Windy hadn’t asked Mrs. Morris about fixing the shed, because that’s part of the fun for him.

You just show up and do it. Do it until it’s done.

And … you do it right.

Fortunately, Windy has

always been pretty handy with tools.

By three o’clock, that shed was up and braced, and several loose boards had been nailed back in their homes again. He brought the can of paint out of his truck and started painting it the same light green it had always been.

DAD’S CHICKEN and DUMPLINGS 1 small chicken or parts (bone-in) 1 medium onion, chopped 2 stalks celery, chopped 1 bay leaf 1 Tbsp. celery salt 1 tsp. garlic powder 3 tsp. salt, or to taste 2 tsp black pepper, or to taste 2 cans 10 count cheap buttermilk biscuits (not flaky) 3 c. milk

Morris looked out upon the wonder of a reconditioned shed in her back yard. She picked up the phone.

“Mr. Johnson? This is Mrs. Morris. That’s right.

Look, I know I’d asked you to take down my old shed, but I’ve changed my mind.

No, I don’t think the old shed will fall on anyone.

Thanks so much anyway.”

Fill stew pot ½ full with water. Add all ingredients except biscuits, flour and milk.

Bring to a medium bowl.

Cook until chicken is done and will fall off the bones.

Remove chicken and debone and chop. Reduce heat to ½ and add the milk. While stirring bring back to a slow boil, on a floured surface, open biscuits and flatten to ⅛’ to ¼”. Tear into 4 pieces.

Roll pieces into the flour liberally. Add one at a time to your pot and let simmer uncovered and don’t stir the dumplings much about 15 minutes or so till dumplings are done.

Tuesday, February 1, 2022, County Judge Randy Moore called to order at 9:00 a.m., the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. A quorum was established as all County Commissioners and County Judge were present. The invocation was led by the Pastor of the Greater Joy Fellowship Church of Bonham who is also the Co-Pastor of the First Congregational Methodist Church of Bonham, Pastor Sylvester Smart.

Pledges were led by Major James Manis, retired.

4. Introductions: There were no introductions.

5. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding Courthouse Restoration:

on the Courthouse as follows: EXTERIOR – Installed landscaping irrigation, planting beds, topsoil, and sod; Flag poles installed; Sidewalks and mow strip completed; Site cleaned up for parking lot contractor. INTERIOR – Acoustic plaster complete and scaffold removed; Wood flooring being installed on 3 and 2; Wood trim being installed on 1st level; Cast iron tread install on 2nd level; Wood final finish on 2nd level; Set for plumbing final tomorrow; Remaining lighting and outlets being trimmed out; Finish the remainder of curved metal ceilings.

6. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve minutes from 01/18/2022 (R) and 01/11/2022 (R): Af-

ter some discussion, it was determined the 1/11/2022 meeting was a “Special” meeting and not a regular meeting. A motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve the minutes.

7. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve Order issuing a burn ban for Fannin County: Fannin County Emergency Coordinator Troy Hudson spoke to give his reasons for there needing to be a burn ban issued. Noting there have been 28 grass fires since the 1st of January and over a dozen structure fires, he explained that fire department personnel would be called off from fighting a grass fire to attend to a house fire. He also reasoned that he did not believe there would be enough precipitation in the near future to make enough of a difference to the dry conditions due to the windy conditions forecasted. After he gave his reasons for a burn ban, a discussion ensued which resulted in Commissioner Lane making the motion to issue a burn ban to be in effect until Tuesday, February 8, 2022. Commissioner Self seconded the motion and the motion passed. The ban will be revisited at the next Commissioners Court.

8. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve a Resolution to accept grant funding from the Office of the Governor for the Structured Family Therapy Program operated by the Juvenile Probation for FY 2022-2023: Fannin County Juvenile Services Director Brandon Caffee spoke to explain how eight out of ten years grant money has been received to fund the Structured Family Therapy

Program. The resolution on this item is his department requesting the approval of the court for this grant money. Judge Moore read the Resolution after which Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion and the motion passed.

9. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding time capsule contents: Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple gave a summation of the items requested and received to place into the time capsule. Those items included: masks; instructions on how to wear a mask, an empty bottle of hand sanitizer; a history of Titos Vodka company making hand sanitizer; pictures of most of the Fannin County Departments; pictures of the City of Bonham staff; patches from the Sheriff’s Office, Ector & Honey Grove Police Departments; the local newspaper, the county budget, and engraved Bois D’Arc pen along with a history article from David Keene; an American and a Texas flag; articles on the lakes; county maps; a Bible; coins; items from the Library; menus from local restaurants; lists of churches; a crimping seal from the county clerk’s office and lots of pictures. When she concluded the list, Judge Moore explained how he provided a bible as well as a personal letter to the County Judge of 2122 naming what was important in life during 2022.

No action was taken.

10. Discussion, consideration, and action to purchase a 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 Tradesman from Bonham Chrysler for $30,158.21 from line item 210-621-5710, Purchase of Equipment, for Precinct 1: Commissioner Lane explained why this is needed and made the motion to approve this purchase. Commissioner Magness seconded the motion and the motion passed.

11. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding the Courthouse rededication ceremony and budgeting for the event: Commissioner Lane explained how she, Commissioner Lackey, and the committee formed to handle the ceremony, have been having meetings and are currently at the point of pur-

chasing invitations, food and everything needed for the event. Commissioner Lackey noted that the cost of the invitations was being taken care of by a citizen wishing to remain anonymous and the food costs are also being covered by like-minded benefactors who would rather remain unnamed at this time.

Not being able to receive an estimate of what it may cost the county at this time, Judge Moore said that since there will be several meetings yet before March 10th, to just let it be known when a cost estimate is reached.

Commissioner Lane added that equipment will be gotten from the Multi-Purpose Complex and a program is in the process of being written.

12. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding building a break room for Pct.3 employees: cost not to exceed $3,500.00 [metal, windows, and door to frame up room with storage overhead and to move $1,500.00 from 230-623-4900 (Miscellaneous) to 230-623-4300 (R&M Building) for a total of $3,500.00]: Commissioner Magness explained the need for this and how it is important to him to have this done for the county employees while he is in office. He then made a motion to have this approved with Commissioner Self seconding the motion and the motion passed.

13. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding location of Courthouse flagpoles: This item was passed on.

14. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve payment of bills: Motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve payment of bills.

15. Public Forum: Major James Manis spoke to say his wife Sheryl, who is a former Fannin County employee, has been approved to be on a liver transplant list.

16. EXECUTIVE SESSION: Deliberation regarding Real Property – a closed meeting will be held pursuant to Section 551.072 of the Government Code for deliberation regarding the purchase, exchange, lease, or value of the real property where deliberation in an open meeting would have a detrimental effect on the position of

Sunday Morning Re-take Hello everyone!

What a wonderful service we had in God’s house Sunday morning! It was a blessing to have a full choir with standing room only!

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 14:26, “In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.” The problem with our nation today is it has gotten to the point where our trust and confidence is not in the Lord where it needs to be.

We must be mindful of the

promise that the Lord gives us in 2 Chronicles 7:14, that if we pray and call on Him in repentance, he will forgive us of our sin.

For our hymn this week, I turn to the writings of John H. Sammis, who wrote this classic hymn in 1887.

“When we walk with the Lord in the light of his word, what a glory he sheds on our way! While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey. Trust and obey, for

17. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding Real Property Executive Session: Judge Moore explained how this is regarding the discussion regarding a property for the Justice Center that will meet the needs of the county for several years.

18. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Lane thanked everyone for their attendance, cautioned the citizenry to not start any fires with the burn ban now being in place, and urged everyone to be safe during the hazardous weather and have a good week.

Commissioner Self echoed Commissioner’s Lane comments and wished all a safe week.

Commissioner Magness commented on all the tree work his crew is doing and will do when needed.

Commissioner Lackey also advised all to exercise caution, have supplies on hand, and thanked all for coming.

Judge Moore stated that there have been 163 fatalities as of today (up 4 from last week) and hospitalization is 22.43% with Fannin County at 22.22%. He noted that though more people are encountering Covid, it does not seem to be as deadly as it previously was. Regarding the weather, he said he would let the papers know what the county plans on doing. He advised proactiveness (fill up your gas, care for your pets and outdoor faucets) and watching the news for updates. He then commented how he is hoping the county auditor can go to a County Health Meeting in Sulphur Springs this afternoon and stated he hopes to have a speaker from that Meeting to the next Commissioners Court as good health for the county is very important.

Easy Gardening – Soil Preparation

Soil is a storehouse for growing plants of minerals, organic matter, air, and water.

Soil provides nutrients, moisture, and support for plants.

When p r o p e r l y prepared and cared for, soil will improve each year. In Fannin County gardeners work with wide variety of soils: sandy, sticky clay, and rocky shallow soil. Sandy soil does not hold water; clay soil holds too much water and limits air to entering the soil; and rocky shallow soil severely limits root growth.

It is important to add organic material every year.

Vegetables and flowers need deep, well-drained soil with adequate organic matter.

Good garden soil with proper moisture will not form a hard ball when squeezed in the hand. It crumbles easily when forced between the fingers. It should not crack or crust over when dry. Addition of organic matter improves most types of soil. Organic matter loosens tight clay, helps sand hold more water, makes soil easier to dig, and adds nutrients.

Common organic matter additives are: Plant materials: This includes leaves, straw, and grass clippings. Months before planting, work material into

the soil to allow it adequate time to decompose. Most gardeners do this during the winter.

Manure: Use composted manure and incorporate it into the soil well ahead of planting.

Do not use fresh manure, as it can damage plants and introduce disease. Apply 30 to 40 pounds of composted manure for every 100 square feet.

Compost: Compost consists of decayed plant materials.

Work compost into the soil before planting.

Before planting, till deeply as possible, at least 8 to 10 inches. Deep tilling loosens soil and allows roots to grow deeper. This is especially important before the first planting in a specific area.

Turn each shovelful of soil completely over. Till soil when it is moist but not wet.

Working soil when it is too wet can cause it to become rough. Spade the soil in the winter when temperatures and moisture help mellow the

soil and prepare for spring planting. Work all plant material into the soil. Before planting, rake the soil clean and level it. Remove sticks, rocks, and other material.

Raised beds are another way to plant vegetables and flowers.

Raised beds allow water to drain away from plant roots, provide furrows for irrigation, allow air to enter soil and help plants through periods of high rainfall.

After completing the steps required to properly prepare the soil for planting, gardening might seem anything but “easy.” But with proper soil preparation, gardening will get “easier” every year.

for your loved one?

Here are a few things to consider. ● Make a plan. For people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias it is never too soon to plan ahead for the future when they can no longer drive. ● It’s important to acknowledge a person’s feelings and preserve his or her independence, while ensuring the person’s safety and the safety of others. ● Empathize with those who are uncomfortable having the conversation and stress the importance of preparing for the future. ● Consider alternative travel options, like a friend or family member. ● Ask a family authority figure or attorney to write a letter stating that the person with Alzheimer’s must not drive. You

can then use the document to remind your family member what has been decided. ● When the person is in the early stage of Alzheimer’s, ask them to sign a driving contract that gives you his or her permission to help them stop driving ● Control access to the car keys. Designate one person who will do all of the driving and give that individual exclusive access to the car keys. ● Disable the car. Remove the distributor cap, battery or starter wire. Ask a mechanic to install a “kill wire” that will prevent the car from starting unless the switch is thrown. Or give the person a set of keys that looks like his or her old set, but does not work to start the car. ● As a last ditch effort, consider selling the car.

Declaration Of Local Disaster Related to Extreme Winter Weather

WHEREAS, _Fannin County, Texas has experienced loss of electricity, loss of water to communities, loss of communication between emergency departments and dangerous health conditions to citizens including long term care facilities due to Extreme Winter Weather; and WHEREAS, Loss of Power and communication poses the threat of individual and group safety as well as property damage; and WHEREAS, Extreme Cold Temperatures have the potential of endangering lives and damaging property on a large scale; and WHEREAS, the Texas Government Code Chapter 418 gives the County Judge the power to declare a local disaster within the county “if the threat of disaster is imminent”; and WHEREAS, the magnitude of the potential damage and the rapidity with which Loss of power, water and communication between fire departments, EMS and law enforcement could escalate constitute an imminent threat of disaster; and WHEREAS, the declaration of such a disaster authorizes the imposition of controls on activities which tend to increase the likelihood of injury to the public; and WHEREAS, such controls, once implemented, have the potential of protecting lives and property by mitigating the threat of Infrastructure and Personal Safety; and WHEREAS, a local disaster declaration expires seven days after its issuance, unless the commissioners court consents to its renewal or continuance; BE IT THEREFORE PROCLAIMED that I, Randy Moore, County Judge of Fannin County, TX, declare a local state of disaster based on the threat of Extreme Winter Weather Loss of Power, Water, Infrastructure and safety for Law Enforcement and Community in Fannin County, Texas.

BE IT ALSO PROCLAIMED that this state of disaster will continue until rescinded in accordance with the above cited statute, but in no instance will this declaration continue for more than seven days without being authorized by the County Commissioners Court.

The directors of a Fannin County service dog training facility say a former constable and Justice of the Peace candidate pepper-sprayed their service dogs last week while on a campaign stop.

Shoshana Tanner, executive director of Topaz Canine Services, said Bob Clemons, who is running for county Justice of the Peace, entered the facility property unannounced on Thursday and lingered by the back door. The facility is in Leonard, about an hour northeast of Dallas.

Macy, the dog who was sprayed in the face is a retired service dog who worked with children with autism in schools, Tanner said. A service dog in training, Nova, was sprayed indirectly in the eye.

According to an incident report from the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, Clemons said he had been passing out business cards for his Justice of the Peace campaign. He told a sheriff’s deputy that he sprayed a pit bull after the dog showed aggression toward him, and that “it wasn’t the service dog they are claiming it was,” the report said.

Tanner said Macy, Nova and her own service dog Milo, were the only dogs present during the incident. All of the dogs are yellow Labradors. She said there are no pit bulls on the property.

Feedlot. Pen riders relying on visual observation to identify potentially sick or lame animals entered an average of 18 pens per day, compared with just 5.3 pens when using SenseHub Feedlot, a 71% reduction.

BRD-related mortality was also lower in a 60-day study.

“The technology is like having another employee monitoring cattle 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Even with ‘feedlot’ in the product name, the product also has application in backgrounding or stocker operations or cow-calf operations retaining calves,” Nickell said.

Other users of SenseHub Feedlot have reported lower treatment costs, less mortality overall, less retreatment and improvement treatment outcomes.

The ear tags, which are reusable, relay information to antennas, which have a range of up to two miles. A gateway collects, stores and transmits the data.

“This technology is another innovation from Merck Animal Health that enables cattle producers to monitor and gather real-time, actionable data to help them better care for and manage cattle,” Paul Koffman, Allflex Livestock Intelligence North America lead, said.

“In times when labor supply is short, SenseHub Feedlot is even more helpful as it allows caretakers to more efficiently and accurately assess animal care needs, resulting in better outcomes for cattle and a positive impact to the bottom line for producers.”

SenseHub Feedlot currently has limited availability, with an expanded rollout planned for Summer 2022.

Beer Busted A Red River County game warden took on the odiferous challenge of trying to find out who was illegally dumping deer carcasses in his area.

Acting on a reporting of four yearling deer carcasses and a hog that had been dumped along a county road, the warden collected evidence, including two beer cans and a feed tub with white feathers inside. A week later a similar call along the same road revealed yet another dumped deer. The warden went to the nearest house and spoke with the homeowners, who admitted their son legally killed a doe and it fell off the ATV on his way to dump it on another property. During the interview, the warden observed several deer hides in the yard. The homeowners stated their dogs had dragged the hides into the yard. After collecting the hides, which were consistent in size with the dumped yearling carcasses, the warden made a visit to a neighbor who denied any knowledge of the incident. The warden noticed feed tubs at their house, a

LISA KAY THOMPSON August 6, 1967 – January 26, 2022

Lisa Kay Thompson, age 54, passed away January 26, 2022, at Texoma Medical Center in Bonham. She was born August 6, 1967 to Arvil Odell and Francis Lucille Wood Wilson in Whitewright.

She attended Trenton High School, and married Jeremy Thompson n February of 2004, in Dallas, Texas. She and Jeremy raised two sons. When she was younger, she spent most of her time working and raising her sons, but when she had spare time, she also enjoyed fishing, going to and having garage sales, and spending as much time with the children in her extended family as possible.

She is survived by her husband, sons Nicolas and Richard, brother Billy Wilson and his wife Rebecca, and 2 nephews and 4 nieces.

There will be a remembrance gathering at Turrentine Jackson Morrow Funeral Home in Leonard, from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, January 30, 2022.

JOSEPHINE B. ROBERTS Josephine B. Roberts, age 105, passed away on January 13, 2022 in Bonham, Texas.

She was born to George Herbert and Mary Martha Brinkerhoff on July 14, 1916 in Tyler, Texas. Josephine leaves her loved ones with unforgettable memories and loving stories. She will be sincerely missed by her loving family, devoted friends, and all the wonderful 2/8/2022 individuals who knew and loved her.

For 43 years Jo Roberts was a teacher in Texas, beginning in Breckenridege, Texas, then in Tyler, in Beaumont and finally in Richardson. In Beaumont, Jo switched entirely to a Latin curriculae, establishing third and fourth year Latin classes, as she did later in Richardson, Under Jo’s direction, Beaumont HS and then Richardson HS became both State and National Champions in the Junior Classical League. Her primary focus was on word study, using Amsel Greene’s Word Clues, and under her tutelage many of her students achieved advance placement in their college courses. During her 100th Birthday Party in Bonham in 2016, over 56 former students and their spouses, flying in from all over the US, and they joined the congregation of First Presbyterian Church Bonham to celebrate Jo Roberts. Many recounted their favorite “Jo” stories and toasted her with tributes. Randy Farber (1977) said that his favorite Latin conundrum was “Semper Ubi; Sub Ubi.” (Translated: Always where under where). White David Esmail (1978) quoted one of his favorite faux Latin poem: “O Sybilli, si ergo/Fortibus es in ero./O Nobili, demis trux./Savatis enim causen dux.” (Translated: Oh see Billy, See them go/40 houses in a row? Oh, No Billy, Them is trucks, see what’s in them: cows and ducks) Charles Nutt simply wrote: “....our Beloved Mrs. Roberts...was quite a lady, who impacted everyone she taught.” Chris Stratton wrote: “Every once in a while, someone comes along who is the right person for the job. Mrs. Roberts was not only born to teach, but born to teach Latin.” Mrs. Roberts was an excellent teacher, wife and mother. She was deacon and Bible Scholar. But, Jo had a sly, wicked sense of humor, and her favorite mock Latin aphorism was: “Illegitimi non carbonrundum est.” (Loosely translated: Don’t let the bastards grind you down.)

Josephine B. Roberts was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, James Drane Roberts; parents, George H and Mary Brinkerhoff; brother William Jacob (Jake) Brinkerhoff; sister Dorothy Henrietta Brinkerhoff Ford; uncles, Joe Bieser and William E. McCorkle; aunt Bea Bieser; and a nephew Robert G Ford.

She will be lovingly remembered by son James David Roberts; daughter Archana Mary Jo Roberts; Grandcat Corazon (Cory); grand niece Stacey Ford McGlaun; grand nephew S. B.J. Stallings of Windom, Texas, passed away on Monday, January, 31, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Honey Grove, Texas. Burial to follow at Windom Cemetery Windom, Texas. Family visitation will be held on Monday, February 7, 2022, at 6:00 PM in the CooperSorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Honey Grove, Texas. Mister Nolan Butler and Reverend Terry Paul Cunningham will officiate. Serving as pallbearers are Ricky McKee, Rex McKee, Tommy Winkler, James Winkler, Bobby Don Stallings, James Paul Stallings, Joel Stallings and Fred Fore. Honorary Pallbearers are Bill Wheeler, Danny Prestridge, Tommy Oliver, Bill Mcwhorter, Sid Andrew , Rusty Andrew, Tommy Nichols and James Nichols.

B.J. was born in Bee, Oklahoma, to Ben and Mattie Stallings on March 6, 1933. He attended college at Southeastern State University in Durant, Oklahoma, where he received his bachelor’s degree in education. B.J. was also a proud member and president of the rodeo club as well as class president, a Golden Gloves boxer along with being a champion bronc rider.

One of the proudest moments in B.J.’s life was being introduced to the love of his life Judy by James Beechamp at the Durant Horse Sale. There began a great love.

B.J. and Judy were married June 6, 1959, in Sherman, Texas. In their sixty years of marriage they built the legacy in the family that they so proudly raised. Mark and Marsha will carry on that legacy proudly.

B.J. was very proud of the kids that he taught throughout his thirty-six year career. He first started his teaching and coaching career in Windom, Texas, and then moved on to Honey Grove, Texas. He touched many lives instilling a certain pride in the kids he helped educate. B.J. started shoeing horses in 1960 and never met a horse too rank to be shod.

He also loved a good bucking horse . Over the years B.J. raised many great horses.

Left to cherish the many memories are B.J.s children- son Mark Stallings of Windom, Texas, and daughter Marsha Daniel and husband Dutch of Lamasco, Texas, grandchildren Shane Dennis and Stormie Dennis of Honey Grove, Texas, and Dylan Daniel of Atoka, Oklahoma, his brother C.T. Stallings of Norman, Oklahoma , two nieces Becky Saunders and family of Lewisville, Texas, Brenda Keizer and family of Boulder, Colorado, and a nephew Joe Stallings and family of Norman, Oklahoma.

He was a very hard-working man, that loved his family dearly. Joe worked at Folgers Coffee for many years, and retired recently from Campbell Soup after over 20 years. Joe is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jerry Fred Brewer, and sisters, Mary Ann Stevenson, and Treacie Hackney.

Joe is survived by his wife of 49 years, Phyllis Brewer of Bonham, Texas, Son, Jason Turner Brewer and wife Lacey of Bonham, Texas, grandchildren; Cason Turner Brewer and Meagan Rae Brewer.

Leonard Roppolo on April 8, 1976, and he preceded her in death on June 10, 2010. She was a member of the Church of Christ, loved watching old movies and game shows. She was a fan of Elvis movies and the “I Love Lucy” show. Her hobbies were reading and writing. She worked as an operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Lloyd B. Cope in 2000, her daughter, Tammy L. Watkins Lebo in 2019.

She is survived by her sons, Daniel M. Watkins and his wife Shannon Watkins, Dale M. Watkins, David L. Roppolo II and his wife April Roppolo; her daughters, Tina L. Roppolo, Tanya L. He joined the United States Army at the age of 16; eager to serve his country he lied about his age. Rudy worked on nuclear weapons during his time in the Army. He retired ranking as a Chief Warrant Officer. Rudy enjoyed traveling. He especially liked cruises to Alaska. Rudy was extremely proud of his granddaughter, Christine, who earned her medical degree.

Rudy is preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

Gardening In February

Submitted by Alice Mussett, Fannin County Master Gardener GARDEN TIPS • Apply pre-emergent weed killer to lawns between now and March 15 to control spring germinating weeds. Water in the pre-emergent lightly to get the granules off the leaves and onto the soil.

• For cool-season, non-grassy weeds such as clover, henbit, dandelions, and chickweed, apply a broad-leafed weed killer containing 2-4-D when daytime temperatures will be above 70 degrees and no rain expected for 48 hours.

• Apply horticultural oil spray to fruit trees, hollies, camellias, oaks, crape myrtles, and others early this month before new buds begin to swell to control scale insects.

• Consider keeping a garden journal with information on planting dates, varieties planted, care instructions, and notes on observations and experiences with plant selections.

PLANTING TIPS

• Bare-root roses and trees.

• Move established trees and shrubs: Leave as large a soil ball as possible keeping the roots intact. Prune the top growth and thin to half to compensate for root loss.

• Vegetable garden: Plant onions and peas early.

Cool crops that can be planted include cabbage, broccoli, Brussel sprouts and cauliflower. Irish potatoes, leafy and root vegetables such as leaf lettuce, carrots, radishes, turnips, beets, chard, and spinach can be planted later this month.

• In the flower garden: Early in the month plant pinks and snapdragons. Later in the month plant larkspur, English daisies, sweet alyssum, ornamental chard, petunias, calendulas, Iceland poppies, and stocks.

• Dig and divide mallows, gloriosa daisies, cannas, mums, fall asters, and salvias later in the month before they start growing.

PRUNING TIPS • Bush roses: Remove dead, dying, and weak canes. Leave

4 to 8 healthy canes, removing about half of the top growth.

Make each cut just above a bud that faces out from the center.

Use good, clean shears that will make clean cuts.

• Climbing roses should be trained and not pruned. Weave long canes through openings in trellises or arbors and tie them with jute twine or plastic/wire plant ties. Securing canes now prevents damage from winter winds and contributes to a more refined look to the garden when roses are blooming.

• Peach and plum trees: Remove vertical shoots and maintain their bowl shape.

• Other fruit and nut trees: Remove the vertical water sprouts on apples and remove dead or damaged branches.

• Nandinas: To reduce height, select a tall cane, follow it to the base of the plant and cut there.

• Cut Autumn Sage back to 8-10 inches.

• Groundcovers: Asian jasmine, liriope, and mondo grass can be trimmed with a line trimer or mower set on the highest setting early this

month.

FERTILIZING TIPS • New trees and shrubs: Use a liquid, high-phosphorus rootstimulator fertilizer monthly.

• Asparagus: All-nitrogen fertilizer early in the month.

Harvest stalks for 6-8 weeks, then feed again and allow plants to grow the rest of the year.

• Fertilize cool season turf such as fescue and ryegrass late in the month with all-nitrogen fertilizer. Wait until late March or April to feed St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns.

• Fertilize pansies and other cool season plants with a highnitrogen water soluble plant food every 2 to 3 weeks to keep them growing and blooming vigorously.

Drought Summary for February 1, 2022

South Widespread heavy rain fell this week in southeast Texas, leading to improvements in ongoing moderate drought and abnormal dryness there. Otherwise, the week was mostly dry across the region. Extreme drought developed in parts of northern Louisiana and

southern Arkansas and northeast Texas, and some ongoing extreme drought areas expanded in this region as well. There, shortterm precipitation deficits worsened, and soil moisture and streamflow decreased.

Severe drought expanded in south-central Texas and north of Lubbock, while

extreme drought north of Lubbock shrank in coverage due to lessened precipitation deficits there.

Widespread extreme drought is ongoing across much of northwest Texas and western Oklahoma, with a narrow strip of exceptional drought present in the western Oklahoma

Panhandle and northeast New Mexico. Burn bans remain in effect in parts of the Southern Plains, where the winter wheat crop is also struggling.

During the offseason, Class 1A basketball districts gained what the larger classifications have had for the last several years: Four postseason berths.

Fannindel remained in the mix for one of those spots in 23-1A boys’ basketball, as its January schedule concluded.

A return to the playoffs in February would equate the Falcons’ first trip since 2014’s 1A Division II area-round advance -- when it took eventual State semifinalist Miller Grove to halt Fannindel’s run.

“Their pitching coach contacted me through an app and asked me to come take a look,” said Dotson.

“I went for a visit and had practice with them.

“I loved how they get the job done -- do drills the right way,” she said. “It’s part of what makes them successful.”

Former Bonham basketball standout Josh Ukpe posted mostly double-digit scoring during the last half of January while playing men’s basketball for Richland College in Dallas.

The 2019 Bonham graduate scored 12 points on Jan. 19, 22 and 26 -- aided by his perfection at the free throw line.

Through January, he had made 88.2 percent of his free throws during the 2021-22 season.

Ukpe just missed doublefigure scoring on Jan. 15 and 29, respectively, with nine and eight points.

In 2019, Ukpe led Bonham boys’ basketball to its only-known bi-district victory, second arearound advance and mostknown wins in a single season with 26.
