TSTC Press Release (WACO, Texas) - Texas State Technical College’s Diesel Equipment Technology program hosted on Thursday the Texas FFA Association Tractor Technician Career Development Event, which featured 12 high schools from North and Central Texas.

In the Texas FFA Association’s Area 5, Sam Rayburn High School placed first, Wolfe City High School placed second and Campbell High School placed third.

Dru Nichols, a sophomore member of Sam Rayburn High School’s team, said the key to victory was lots of hands-on practice.

In the Texas FFA Association’s Area 8, Midway High School placed first, Crawford High School placed second and Teague High School placed third.

“It feels rewarding,” said Caleb Montgomery, a sophomore member of Midway High School’s team. “We have all been working on this since September.”

Recruitment Grant Article The Scholarship Committee of the Beta Psi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma is now accepting applications for the organization’s annual Recruitment Grant. The scholarship will be awarded to a woman who declares her major as education and is enrolled as a junior or beyond in college. An applicant must be a graduate of a Fannin County high school or be a Fannin County resident.

The applicant must submit a letter and a transcript. The letter must include a thorough overview of her background, current educational status and plan for the future.

2/4/20 Museum Object of the Week

This remarkable object was used for ironing clothes. While the original irons had to be heated on a stove, this iron was fueled by kerosene or another type of liquid fuel.

While still very heavy, this iron was a big improvement over the iron that had to be heated on the stove. Those irons had be reheated constantly, so the housewife or servant had to go back and forth from the ironing board to the stove to change a cold iron for a hot one. And heating irons on a stove meant that a fire had to be lit even in the summer. That type of iron was very heavy (in later years they made great doorstops).

The iron heated by fuel continued to be produced and sold even after World War II to families living in rural areas without electricity.

Many people today rarely or even never iron their clothes.

The Fannin County Museum of History has many articles that relate to washing clothes, from rub boards to irons. Bring your children or grandchildren in to see these objects and tell them about washday on the farm.

The Museum of located a few blocks south of the Courthouse Square in Bonham in the old Texas & Pacific Depot, and is open Tuesday-Saturday, noon – 4 pm.

Domestic violence and adult sexual assault are the number one underreported crime in our nation. Victims often believe they are to blame, are filled with so much shame and fear they cannot make it on their own. These beliefs keep them

from getting help, which in turn, causes more harm to themselves and their children.

Observing my peers and the adults working in the fields I soon realized that “making a hand” had more to do with attitude, determination, and work ethic than just sheer size or strength. Some earned the respect and admiration of their co-workers, and a few earned the disdain of other workers by shirking and complaining. I came to realize that at whatever job I was doing, I needed the settled, honest, inward assurance that I was “making a hand.”

I carried that attitude through my careers with General Cable and Verizon. Working for a large telecommunications company, hard, diligent work could sometimes go unnoticed. I often faced customers that were angry at the large anonymous company and the recorded messages when they called in with trouble. I was the face of the phone company to those customers and it took tact, sincerity, and extra effort to satisfy them and repair their service.

I bring that same attitude and drive to this candidacy for commissioner of Precinct One in Fannin County. I believe that the residents of my precinct are paying customers. You pay taxes to keep this county functioning and you deserve the best effort that I can give to make your county prosperous and peaceful, and the roads and infrastructure maintained. I will always be honest and open with the residents of Precinct One and the citizens of Fannin County. I don’t make haphazard promises. When I was an adolescent boy, country kids earned money in the summers by hoeing peanuts or hauling hay, and in the fall, by picking cotton or pulling bolls. From my LiFe to yours: 5/2/17 Clothed in the Armor of God

By Bro. Bill Beasley Ephesians 6: 10-18 V.10 “Finally my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in

the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God.” One of the joys that I have experienced in my ministry here in Bonham has been the opportunity to reach out in love to the veterans that use the services of the Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center. Not only did I have the privilege of serving on their staff as a chaplain but having retired here, I still have contact with veterans from time to time.

I once had an early appointment at the special clinic to be fitted with my

new hearing aid. When I arrived in the waiting room two veterans had already come. One had been in the Korean War the other had been in the Vietnam War. I had combat duty in World War II. During our conversation one made the comment “our world is in a bad shape.”

The response of the second was “the One in control has not made His move yet and when He does things will be different.”

This thought grew out of our little conversation.

Area Students Can Earn Dollars for School Events in Contest Video PSAs Provide Important Safety Message

PARIS – High School seniors in TxDOT’s ninecounty Paris District can earn some extra dollars for their Project Celebration events by participating in a fun video contest that highlights safe driving.

Students work in teams to write, shoot and produce a short video Public Service Announcement (PSA) that emphasizes the dangers teen drivers sometimes face, such as distracted driving, speeding, not wearing seat belts, or driving under the influence. In doing so, they earn a mini-grant from TxDOT to spend on their celebrations.

Soon after I requested a tamale pie recipe that calls for cornmeal, Freda Simpson sent me these two. I can’t wait to try them! Freda said that these are old recipes, but she thought that I might enjoy them. Not only will I enjoy them, I want to share them with everyone in Fannin County! Thanks, Freda!

TAMALE PIE 1 lb. ground beef 1 to 2 tablespoons oil 1 tablespoon chopped onion ½ cup cornmeal ½ cup milk 1 ½ cup tomato juice 1 - 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 ½ teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon sugar 2 beaten eggs 1 can sliced or chopped ripe olives Preheat oven to 350°. Cook ground beef and oil until no longer red. Add onion and cook until done. Blend meal and milk, add tomato juice combined with chili powder, salt and sugar. Cook over boiling water, stir until thick (20 minutes). Add meat mixtures and ½ cup sliced olives or all. Stir in eggs. Pour into 6x10 Pyrex dish. Top with olives. Bake 30-40 minutes or until set. Serves 6 generously.

Serve with Ranch Style beans.

This recipe can be halved.

1. Establish Quorum. The regular Fannin County Commissioners Court was called to order by Fannin County Judge Randy Moore on Tuesday, January 28, 2020. A quorum was established as all commissioners were present at this time.

2. Invocation. The invocation was given by Jackie Trenholm interim pastor at Grove Hill United Methodist Church.

3. Pledges. Pledges to the U.S. and Texas Flags were led by Major James Manis.

4. Introductions. There were no introductions this week.

5. Public Forum. No one spoke in public forum this week.

6. Discussion, consideration and action to approve minutes from 01/21/2020 (R), 01/07/2020 (R), 12/31/2019 (R), 10/04/2019 (S), 09/13/2019 (S) and 08/09/2019 (S). Commissioner Lackey made a motion to approve. Commissioner Magness seconded. Motion carried.

7. Discussion, consideration and action to remedy maintenance issues at the General Cable Building (County Clerk, District Attorney Offices). Michelle Case, Fannin County Purchasing Agent, spoke to the court concerning maintenance issues with the restrooms and

The county cannot work on roads when it is wet and raining, so please be patient. Commissioner Self: Stated that he met with Denisha Turner with the Census and wanted to assure everyone that their personal information that is used for the census is confidential and will not be shared. The census starts April 1st and runs through July 31st. It is important that everyone participates as there is $675 billion dollars that the government will distribute and we need to make sure that Fannin County gets their part. family and friends each day as you never know what tomorrow may bring; the courthouse fence on the west side will be moved out this week eliminating the interior parking; due to some comments that have been made, he wanted to let everyone know that road maintenance is very important and a large part of their job as commissioners; it isn’t all about business.

Judge Moore: Appreciated Pastor Jackie’s prayer concerning “service” at the beginning of commissioners court; thanked Commissioner Whitlock and Magness for standing in for him when he was not present in court; showed appreciation for the Cert workers and the Ham Radio Club for the good job they do in their disaster preparation and training; spoke with Dr. James Froelich, Fannin County Health Authority, who stated the flu is worse this year than in previous years; the best medicine is preventative action by washing your hands and if you have symptoms, stay at home. It is not too late to get the flu shot.

There will not be a commissioners’ court on February 11th due to commissioner training.

For Commissioner, Fannin County Precinct 1 1/6/15

On March 3, 2020, the citizens of Precinct 1 can elect a new Republican county commissioner for Fannin County. I ask for your vote to be that commissioner based on what goals I would like to see happen in the county, my proven track record of improving and growing two important entities in the county, and my ability to work with others across the county.

This week I would like to discuss the fourth platform of my campaign: Plan for Expected Countywide growth – if we truly want to grow, we must work on our water and infrastructure planning at the county level.

Development of industry and housing developments that will help grow the tax base of the county all require the underlying infrastructure to make them happen. Whether that is water which many of our small water suppliers don’t have the current capacity to furnish many more customers, county roads that can accommodate two lane traffic, or an industrial park for heavy industry we must have a plan in place.

Without a strategic plan, we just flounder around and accept whatever and whoever wants to spend a dollar in our county without considering the long-term consequences. While the county does not have the authority to zone, we do have the ability to work with the existing cities, water suppliers, electrical suppliers, and engineers to improve the areas that will see the most growth that would be advantageous for the counties future.

As a full-time commissioner, I will work with the other entities in the county to make sure we create a strategic plan like Waller county did in 2017. Being located just next door to Harris county (Houston) they are working through the same issues Fannin County is facing: How do we maintain our sense of community and open space while still accommodating growth.

I ask for your vote on March 3, 2020 or early vote starting February 18th.

My name is Edwina Lane and I am running to serve you as Fannin County Commissioner - Precinct 1.

My husband, Mike, along with our daughters, Summer and Autumn, are longtime residents of Fannin County and we live on a piece of property just outside of Ector. We own Texas Firearms Training Academy which is a consulting firm providing emergency response preparation to over 25 area school districts.

These districts have chosen to add a medical response as well as an armed component to their security plan.

Mike and I met at the Lewisville Police Department where I served for nearly 20 years as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher and Evidence Technician. He continues to serve there as a Police Captain. I served on the Ector ISD School Board for seven and a half years, fulfilled the role of Ector PTO President, and coached many of our kids’ softball teams through the Ector Youth Sports Association. I absolutely love our community and there is no denying the fact it offers us a lifestyle that just cannot be duplicated.

We all see the changing landscapes along our major roadways leading into town.

****I SUPPORT SHERIFF MARK JOHNSON**** I have lived in Fannin County since 1984 and lived 100 yards in to Grayson County 5 years before that.

My family has been here since Fannin County was created. I have personally known every Sheriff since the early 80’s, the good and the bad and some that had both qualities.

My background includes 10 years as a Peace Officer in Fannin County. I have been a business owner in Fannin County for 34 years and also spent 34 years in Education as well, retiring as a Superintendent. I know what it takes to effectively work with the people in the community and to manage hundreds of employees and I also understand the constraints of a tax-payer funded government budget.

I am supporting and endorsing Sheriff Mark Johnson for Re-Election as our Fannin County Sheriff. There is more to being a leader of an institution like the Sheriff’s Office than most would think. While it’s true there is the ultimate goal of providing the safety and security of the people of Fannin County, which Mark does very well but there are many other things required of the Sheriff. Managing the operations, budget and personnel of the Sheriff’s Office within the constraints set forth by the taxpayers through the Commissioner’s Court system is huge.

The value of experience when making operational decisions is clearly evident for law enforcement. The value of experience is even more critical when providing these services for the entire county.

The biggest weakness of the Sheriff’s Office over the years has been training. It is difficult to put a price tag on training. Sure, you can count the dollars it costs, but can you count the time and lives it saves? It is impossible to know how many crimes, injuries or other mishaps are prevented by our brave men and women of the Sheriff’s Office each year. The excellent job of increasing and maintaining training in all aspects is paramount in this success. Sheriff Johnson is doing an excellent job of making sure our men and women on the front lines have the skills and knowledge to do the complex job we ask of them daily. Since taking office in January 2017, the Sheriff’s Office has logged a total of 8,408 training hours.

We owe it to the citizens of Fannin County and the men and women in Law Enforcement to provide the equipment, supplies and knowledge it takes to do the ever-evolving role of Deputy Sheriff. It is amazing all the things we ask these folks to do and even more amazing that Sheriff Mark Johnson does this daily with the limited resources available to him and his team.

We don’t need someone who has not been a peace officer since 1981 with even less experience than I have after all these years. We don’t need a disgruntled former employee with only a basic peace officer certification and no management experience who only wants to look at a narrow aspect of the job. We don’t need to serve only a small part of the county. We need the experience, dedication and continued service to the community at large to every citizen of Fannin County.

We need to Re-Elect Sheriff Mark Johnson !!!!!!

Upon his graduation from Texas Tech University, Dustin was assigned to Newport Naval Station in Newport, Rhode Island, for Navy Officer Candidate School (OCS). While attending OCS Dustin received 12 weeks of intensive training and preparation to become a Navy Line Officer. Classes focused on leadership, physical training, military training as well as academics, ranging from Navigation to Shipboard Engineering and Damage Control. Dustin was assigned a Chief Petty Officer and a commissioned Naval Officer to aid in his transformation from civilian to Candidate Officer. He was also rigorously trained by Marine Corps Drill Instructors who challenged him on every physical level. During his twelve weeks Dustin moved through Indoctrination Candidate to Officer Candidate to Candidate Officer. During the last few weeks Dustin was assigned a group of candidates to lead.

After his commissioning Dustin was assigned to Nuclear Power School in Charleston,

Prior to his commissioning Dustin applied for and was accepted in the Navy’s Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate (NUPOC) program in the fall of 2017. The NUPOC program prepares young men and women for becoming a Navy Line Officers-specifically Submarine and Surface Warfare Officers as well as Navy Aviators, Flight Officers, Special Warfare and Special Operations Officers. The program is a door leading to industry leadership and lifelong learning as well as groundbreaking research and high-level civilian collaborations. Once this training is completed Dustin will receive submarine training in Connecticut. After completing all the necessary training Dustin will be assigned as an officer on a nuclear submarine.

In 2014 Dustin was both an honor graduate of Bonham High School and achieved his Eagle Scout rank. In May of 2019, he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

Flu in Fannin County J. E. Froelich, D.O., FACOFP Fannin County Health Officer Many Fannin County residents have had an unwanted visitor lately: influenza. The flu virus has been especially active in the past month as noted in this week’s report from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

The flu prevalence rate in Fannin County and in Texas Health Region 2/3 (this includes Fannin and Grayson counties) during late December and early January exceeds the rate during the same weeks in last year’s particularly brutal 2018-2019 flu season. Thankfully, there is presently a downward trend across the state as a whole.

Flu cases in Texas hit a recent peak near Christmas, the report shows.

However, if this year’s trends follow last year’s, early February could bring another blast of flu cases.

Seeming to lag slightly behind the reported State statistics, local doctors have seen an increase in flu cases in the past two weeks; that increase runs parallel to, but a little later than, the late December peak reported in cases statewide.

Some Fannin County businesses have noted absentee rates as high as a 30% this week as their workforce has been decimated by influenza related illnesses. Absenteeism due to flu is causing temporary shortages in labor force.

Also notable, the Ector School District was closed for several days last week, and the Trenton School District has had to close its doors this week due to flu generated absenteeism among students.

Influenza cases typically increase sharply after students return from Christmas holidays, congregate and commingle the virus.

Fannin County health officials urge residents to take notice of the prevalence and severity of the present flu outbreak and be ‘flu-smart”. Wash hands often and don’t eat or drink after others us-

ing the same glasses, bottles or utensils. Keep hands away from the face generally. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are effective and should be used frequently along with soap and water. The mouth and nose should be covered when coughing or sneezing. When possible, avoid areas where multiple people congregate closely, especially with people showing signs of the flu such as chills/cough/ body aches.

Viral illnesses such as the flu tend to infect several parts of the body all at the same time. The attack of the lung clauses most of the more threatening symptoms and sequelae such as respiratory difficulties and bacterial pneumonia. If people develop cough, especially associated with fevers, body aches, sore throat, nasal congestion or other signs of viral infection, they should sequester themselves in their homes hydrate well and rest. They should avoid exposing other people to their coughs and symptoms. Flu victims actively shed influenza virus for 48 to 76 hours after their temperatures have subsided. The spread of the virus is through airborne particles from coughing and sneezing, through oral contact, and by hand contact.

Care from medical professionals should be sought if severe flu symptoms develop. Influenza and its effects can be deadly. There have been more than 12 flu associated deaths reported in Dallas County this season. People should consider hospital emergency rooms if there are severe breathing difficulties, sharp chest pains, harsh coughing associated with dark phlegm and fever, as well as very high temperatures - especially in young children and the elderly. Chicken soup and bed rest are usually sufficient to weather the flu storm in young healthy individuals, but can’t be dangerous at any age.

During flu season be smart, flu-smart.

PATSY RUTH PITTMAN GRIMES

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Patsy Ruth P i t t m a n Grimes, 79 year old Leonard resident, was held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel of Leonard.

Brother Chad Leutwyler officiated.

Patsy was born May 6, 1940 in Leonard, Texas. Her parents were Luther V. and Bennie Elenora Short Pittman. She married James Mac Grimes, Sr. December 14, 1956 in Leonard. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Leonard and she worked as an office Manager for the West Leonard Water Supply. Patsy had served as a foster parent for many children and she devoted her life to her children and grandchildren. Patsy’s Sunday School Class, the Martha Class, at the First Baptist Church of Leonard was very special to her. Patsy passed away Thursday, January 23, 2020 at the Leonard Manor.

Patsy is survived by her children and their mates: Susan & Danny Lewis, Gaye & Garry Doyle, Jimmy Grimes, all of Leonard, Mark Warren of Bells and Angela Grimes and Chase Tolleson of McKinney. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Misti Baxter, Kari Doyle, Matt Lewis, Jami Ghaemmaghami, Angela Lewis, Austin Lewis, Makayla Parks, Seth Lewis, Auddy Doyle and Brady Mac Tolleson and her eleven GreatGrandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Patsy was preceded in death by two brothers, George Pittman and Jerry Pittman.

COLLEEN JANEEN WATKINS

Colleen Janeen Wa t k i n s , 53 years old, past a w a y S u n d a y, January 19, 2020 at Methodist Dallas, with close friends and family by her side.

Colleen was born February 25, 1966 to Clifford and Phyllis Watkins in Garland, Texas, where she grew up and went to school. She was active in the FFA during high school. At the age of 24 her mom strongly suggested she move out on her own. She later moved to the country or

“The Fannin Country” and never missed “The Big City”.

She worked in a cabinet shop with her friend GiGi Webster for several years. Afterwards, she trained and became a Vet Tech Assistant, which she loved dearly. She worked as a Vet Tech Assistant in Lucas and then in Bonham.

After switching jobs in August of 2014 a work injury to her right hand forced her into early retirement. Many times she stated her regrets about the job change which led to the injury. Colleen enjoyed singing karaoke, playing pool, being with friends, her parents, her dogs and mostly traveling with her sidekick Sharon. She thought of Sharon’s daughters and grandchildren as her own and was very proud of them.

As most of you know, she never met a stranger and was fiercely loyal to her friends.

You best not talk bad about her parents or Sharon. Colleen was full of life and will be missed by many.

Colleen is survived by her parents, Clifford and Phyllis Watkins of Ivanhoe, TX; caregiver and best friend Sharon Reed of Mulberry, TX; as well as many other family members. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, William & Mary Watkins and Otis & Velma Morphis.

Colleen’s body was donated to The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School for the advancement of learning and science. A celebration of life was held February 1st at 2pm at Ivanhoe Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

JAMES “JIM” OTTO TOUTZ J a m e s “Jim” Otto Toutz of Dodd City, T e x a s passed away peacefully at his home on January 18, 2020.

During the final months of his life, he received wonderful care by the ladies of Abell Companions and Guardian Hospice. He was born January 24, 1932 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Otto and Ruth Toutz. He graduated from Webb City High School in Webb City, MO in 1950 and the Missouri School of Mines in Rolla, MO in 1954 with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He married Janice Taylor in October of 1959, in Kansas City, MO and together have two daughters. His career eventually landed him with Forney Engineering in Addison, TX where he retired after 28 years. His second marriage was to Marie Patricia “Patti” Brummett on June 9, 1979 and he extended his family with her two daughters.

They were married for 39 years until her passing in 2018.

In 1991, he built his retirement home outside of Lanius with Patti. He was an outdoorsman

Funeral services for Mr. Bill Turnage, age 75, of Bonham, were held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the Living Word Church of God 699 E US-82, Bonham, TX with Pastor Eddy Prince officiating. Burial followed in the Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham, under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Bill passed away on January 28, 2020 at his residence in Bonham, Texas.

Bill was born on December 16, 1944 in Idabel, Oklahoma, the only child of the late Loyd James Turnage and Marjorie Lee Stanfield Turnage. He was a graduate of Valliant High School and married Phyllis Cooper on December 15, 1962 in Valliant, Oklahoma. Bill was a businessman, and spent his entire career with one company, working his way up from a salesman to President and Chairman of the Board for V.P.G. in Bonham. A career built over 42 years. After his retirement in 2006, he enjoyed spending time taking care of his daughter’s farm and tending to all of the animals.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis Turnage of the home and his daughter Carol Turnage of Anna, Texas and extended family and a host of friends.

Pallbearers were John Burnett, Richard Glaser, Jesse Hernandez, Rudy Lira, Tom Turner, and Joe Ward. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Dyson, Tony Martinez, Kevin Peterson, and Bill Spencer.

RUTH ANN BARNET

Funeral Services for Ruth Ann Barnet, age 80, of Bonham, Texas were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 30, 2020 at Boyd Baptist Church in Bonham, Texas under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Pastors Mike Allred and Jerry Clements officiated. Bro. Rex Jackson was the minister of music.

Burial followed at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Texas. Ruth Ann’s son, Barry Barnet, and grandsons officiated at the graveside. Ruth Ann passed away early Sunday morning, January 26, 2020 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas.

Ruth Ann was born on April 21, 1939 in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Jacob Dean Ramel and Gladys Cora Yarbrough Ramel. She graduated from Brackenridge High School in San Antonio, Texas and went on to study business at the Draughon’s Business College in San Antonio, Texas, earning her associate degree. Ruth Ann married Donald Gail Barnet on July 12, 1959 in San Antonio, Texas. She was selected to model clothing at the Heart O’ Texas Fair Complex in Waco, Texas. Her modeling career was only for a few weeks, but it led to her being recognized from the paper and hired on as a professional secretary at Baylor University. She worked as a secretary for many years, most recently at the Fairview Nursing Home in Bonham, Texas. Together, Donald and Ruth Ann raised two fine sons. They were married for over sixty years prior to her passing. Ruth Ann was a pious woman and devout Christian. She was active in the ministry of the church. She would volunteer her time, ministering in Sunday school and visitation. She will be greatly missed. Ruth Ann is preceded in death by her parents and beloved son, Rev. Jeffrey Wayne Barnet.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Gail Barnet of Bonham, Texas; son, Barry Barnet and wife Linda of El Campo, Texas; daughter-in-law, Laurel Mence and husband Kyle of Sherman, Texas; grandchildren, Caleb Dean Barnet and wife Katherine of Commerce, Texas, Corban Lynn Barnet and wife Christa of Dorchester, Texas, and Benjamin James Barnet of Sherman, Texas; great grandchildren, Bennett Barnet, Oliver Barnet, and Donovan Barnet.

Pallbearers were son, Barry Barnet, grandsons, Caleb Barnet, Corban Barnet, and Benjamin Barnet, and friends, Roy Osborne and David Johnson.

I graduated the Texoma Regional Police Academy in November 1996. I became employed with the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office in January 1997 and resigned in April 1999. After raising my kids, I was able to return to what I love doing and that’s serving my community. I had the opportunity to return to the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office in 2012. I worked my way to becoming a Patrol Sergeant and then to Sergeant in the Criminal Investigations Division. During my time as a Criminal Investigator, I investigated many different offenses including but not limited to; Assaults, Aggravated Assaults, Sexual Assaults, Sexual Assaults of Children, Aggravated Robberies, Thefts, Burglaries,

and Shootings, to name a few. I have conducted many interviews and obtained many confessions to assist our Justice System in the prosecution process.

My greatest achievement was obtaining confessions on multiple sex offenders of children. I also investigated large theft rings where over $300k worth of property was recovered and returned to the victims and other agencies. In March 2017, I resigned and went to work with the Bonham Police Department where I am currently employed.

My mission is to provide professional law enforcement services to the citizens and visitors of Fannin County, to protect life and property, and to provide a safe, secure, and humane incarceration of inmates.

No law enforcement agency can operate at its maximum potential without supportive input from the citizens it serves. If elected, my office will actively solicit and encourage the cooperation of all citizens to reduce criminal activity and within, legal limits, to assist in bringing to justice those that prey on the person and property of others.

I promise a new philosophy for the office and changes that would enhance county law enforcement services to you, thus enforcing the law in a fair and impartial manner to prevent and deter crime and ensuring that the

employees of the Sheriff’s Office would receive the best training available in order to provide the best service to the citizens of Fannin County.

I will work hard to reduce major crime in Fannin County. I will help the narcotics division to attack local drug issues and to assist in the deterrence of crime. I will fight to put more marked units on county roads and highways. I will work with local agencies to initiate a SRT/ Negotiations Unit for Fannin County. Dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball (container), and no deeper than the height of the root ball. Identify the trunk (root) flare - where the roots spread at the base of the tree.

It should be partially visible after the tree has been planted.

The majority of the roots on a newly planted tree will develop in the top 12 inches of soil. If planted too deep, new roots have difficulty developing due to lack of oxygen. Always lift the tree by the root ball, not the trunk. Straighten the tree in the hole before replacing the backfill.

The soil that you dig out of the hole is used to backfill around the root ball. NO soil amendments should be added; NO compost, peat moss, or

shredded pine bark should be added. Fill the hole about 1/3 full and gently pack the soil around the base of the rootball. If the tree is balled and burlapped, cut and remove the string and wire from around the trunk. Remove the burlap from the top 1/3 of the rootball. Don’t damage the trunk or roots in the process.

Fill the remainder of the hole, and firmly pack the soil to eliminate air pockets which may cause the roots to dry out.

After planting, build a 4-inch tall berm around the edge of the hole. Fill the berm with mulch (shredded bark or compost). When filling, take care that the actual trunk of the tree is not covered as this may cause decay of the bark

at the base. A one to two inch unmulched space is adequate.

The mulch and berm make it easier to water the tree and reduce weed competition. DO NOT apply fertilizer at the time of planting.

Staking is not recommended.

Unstaked trees establish more quickly and develop stronger trunk and roots systems.

After planting, water by filling the bermed and mulched basin to settling soil around the root ball. First week, lightly water every day, week two, every other day, week three, every third day with 2-3 quarts of water, week four and beyond - once a week if needed. This weans the tree slowly off of supplemental irrigation and produces a large root system.

Cooper FAIR. Water clear; 52-54 degrees; 0.71’ low. Largemouth bass are good on Carolina rigged worms, crankbaits, and spinners in flooded timber. The white bass are good on slabs and live bait. Catfish are excellent on live and cut bait.

Lavon FAIR. Water stained; 54 degrees: 1.97’ low. Crappie are good on jigs and spinners finding healthy structure and normally drops within 300 feet of shore. White bass have been poor, but deeper water is showing some promise. Black bass are good on crankbaits, worms, lizards, and jigs looking for flooded vegetation. Catfish are excellent on stinkbait.

Ray Roberts GOOD. Water stained: 51-52 degrees; 1.45’ high. Largemouth bass are good on Carolina rigged worms and lizards working points deeper than normal. White bass are excellent on minnows. Crappie are

slow on jigs and minnows.

Catfish are good on live bait and stinkbait.

Tawakoni FAIR. Water stained; 53 degrees; 0.87’ low. Catfish are excellent on live, cut shad and stinkbait closer to banks.

Largemouth bass are fair on spinnerbaits, plastic worms, and crankbait along the shoreline, fallen structure, and points. White bass and hybrid stripers are good on slabs, spoons, and Alabama rigs. Crappie are fair on minnows around structure.

Texoma FAIR. Water stained; 48-50 degrees; 0.32’ high. Striped bass are good using slabs, trolling main lake, swimbaits, flukes, and live bait with large schools in creeks and channels. Largemouth bass are good fishing below 15 feet. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs by boathouses, submerged vegetation, and timber. Catfish are fair on live shrimp, cut bait, and minnows.

Game Warden Field Notes

Plenty of Guts, But No Glory On Dec. 19, a Gaines/Andrews County game warden received a tip from an anonymous caller about a mule deer that may have been shot illegally on a property about 20 miles southeast of Seminole. The warden contacted the landowner and found a gut pile on his property. The warden then contacted the neighboring ranch that is currently still in their Managed Lands Deer Program season and found an individual had shot a mule deer over their fence line and gutted it on the opposite side. The landowner determined he thought it was an honest boundary mistake and didn’t believe charges were necessary. The deer and head were seized, and the hunter was cited for hunting mule deer out of season and warned for improperly tagging that deer with an MLDP tag. Charges and restitution are pending.

For He’s A Jolly Bad Felon On Dec. 9, a Gaines/Andrews County game warden received an anonymous tip from a local contact who said that there might have been an illegal deer shot in the past year on a property southeast of Seminole. Upon interviewing four individuals, it was determined there were four mule deer bucks shot on the same property without the consent of the landowner. Through the investigation, it was also determined that two of the three subjects were convicted felons.

Three rifles, four sets of small mule deer antlers, and deer meat was seized. Charges include unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, hunting mule deer without landowner consent, various warnings, and civil restitution on four mule deer bucks. Cases are currently pending.

How Shellfish On Jan. 6, Aransas County game wardens inspected a commercial oyster boat in Aransas Bay. The boat possessed 26 sacks of oysters and the cargo was determined to be 17.3% undersized.

The oysters were returned to the water with an estimated value of $1,040.00. The captain and two deckhands were cited for undersized oysters. It was determined the captain had two prior convictions since 2017. The boat was

escorted to the harbor and the captain was arrested for an enhanced undersized oyster case.

The captain was transported and placed into the Aransas County Detention Facility. The case is pending prosecution.

Racked ‘Em Up At 1 a.m. on Dec. 25, a Bowie County game warden received information about possible illegal hunting activity on a farm in the northern part of Bowie County. The warden responded to the area and located two white-tailed doe and one feral hog laying near a residence on the farm. A short time later a vehicle drove up and the warden detained two male subjects in the truck after discovering two more white-tailed doe in the bed of the pickup.

During a search of the immediate area, the warden located two ice chests containing what appeared to be deer meat. In addition to harvesting the four does, the two subjects also admitted to harvesting the deer in the ice chests a few nights before. Both individuals were taken into custody and booked into the Bowie County Jail for hunting at night.

Since then, game wardens have searched several areas of the farm and located additional deer carcasses. The investigation is on-going, and cases are pending.

Ending Waiting: Victory clinches 10th-consecutive playoffs for three-time girls state hoops finalist DC

By Rich Hilliard DODD CITY -Three-straight trips to the Class 1A girls state basketball championship game have led to something for Dodd City’s Lady Hornets.

It’s ensued each time: Waiting -- and even more anticipation for -- the start of the next girls basketball season for Dodd City.

Waiting for the start of district basketball -- and the chance to extend the championship streak.

Waiting to start another basketball postseason run that reaches the title game -- and a trip home with a state championship trophy in tow this time.

Having the first Lady Hornets’ basketball game of the 2019-20 season on Nov. 19 -instead of any earlier in the month -- made a second-straight trip to the regional quarterfinals in volleyball -- involving the same athletes Dodd City’s Braylee Cowan (12) drives to the basket as -- not prolong the teammate Journie Hilliard (21) smiles in the background on waiting.

duration of district play.

Again this season, that has meant district games for Dodd City where the outcome has been a forgone conclusion long before time expired in the fourth quarter.

Through Jan. 28, the Lady Hornets’ average winning margin during District 23-1A play has been 70.6 points -with four games where opponents were held to single digits.

“Mainly, we have focused on how we play on defense,” said junior starter Dani Baccus, following a 95-20 district win on Jan. 28.

“We can’t dumb it down,” she said.

“We have to keep our composure -- the same as if we were playing in the State championship game.”

The Dodd City junior -- one of four 2019 all-state selections who have returned this season for the Lady Hornets -- had 18 points during the win -only bested by younger sister Rion Baccus’ 35.

“I just focus on each shot. Don’t rush it,”

said Rion Baccus, a freshman addition to the Lady Hornets who has contributed scoring from the start of the 2019-20 season. She also had 35 points during Dodd City’s Dec. 6 win over Rivercrest.

The win on Jan. 28 officially ended the waiting to be postseason-bound again -- it clinched a 10th-consecutive trip for Dodd City which has had to replicate its past success this season often sans senior Delaney Pilliod.

Another of the 2019 all-state veterans back for the Lady Hornets, Pilliod missed almost a month of games -Dec. 6-31 -- due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury and the Jan. 28 contest due to the flu.

The victory also improved secondranked Dodd City’s record to 25-4 overall and 9-0 in 23-1A, needing only one more district win to secure an eighth-straight title and bi-district bye. The previous seven championships came after undefeated

family, coaches and friends on hand.

“I’m so beyond blessed and super excited,” said Ya r b o r o u g h , who will be part of DBU’s cheer and stunt squads. “I love the girls and coaches there.”

Ya r b o r o u g h also praised the academics at DBU where she will major in nursing and minor in forensic science.

Ya r b o r o u g h has been a cheerleader

for Bonham Independent School District for six years. She has cheered on the varsity squad for the last three years, earning the Most Spirited Award as a sophomore.

“As you can tell, cheer is a part of Katyn, said Bonham cheer coach Stacy Hunnicutt.

“She has all-around ability, excelling in jumps, stunts and tumbling,” said Hunnicutt. “She always gives 100 percent and always has a blast cheerleading.

“We are so excited she gets to continue her cheerleading at Dallas Baptist University.”

Previously, Nelson had worked with an online reading program, but, due to changes in curriculum, that program was dropped, and the need for a replacement arose. lessons. The coding program integrates computer skills, logical thinking, and problemsolving. Students are placed on a pathway that presents them with increasingly difficult puzzles that they must solve. To do this, they assemble blocks of code, or instructions, that tell their character what to do. Often, their first attempt is not successful, and students have to try again. In this way, students also learn to handle failure.

“I like the coding course because it teaches students how to problem-solve,” says Charlsie Vaught, instructional support at Finley-Oates.

“They also begin to understand how to learn from their mistakes. If they get something wrong the first time, they have the opportunity to troubleshoot and fix it.”

Ultimately, the instructional team at Finley-Oates hopes that students will learn to transfer the skills they learn in coding to other classes. “It teaches them perseverance,”

says Stephanie Avery, who also works with instructional support at the school. “Hopefully, students will apply this to their other classes and will learn to try to find the answer themselves instead of automatically giving up and raising their hands.”

Students seem to agree. “You get to figure out stuff and see the characters go,” says Kourtnee, a third-grader. “It was really fun when I started to get into the games and stuff.”

Luis, another third-grader, says that he enjoys the different levels. “Sometimes they are pretty challenging!”

How is Nelson feeling after a semester of teaching coding to elementary students? “I feel confident now,” she says. “It is challenging, but the kids seem to love it.”

A student named Trystan sums it up best. “I like it when . . . I solve the puzzle. It makes me feel proud of myself!”

One is the feather technique, producing beautiful depictions of feathers of varying size. The other is the “saran wrap” technique, where plastic bags or saran wrap are used to produce an ethereal floral effect. Karen Sigler, an artist member at the CAC will be leading the class and is known for both techniques.

n September of 2008 I came home from a family funeral to find my ex-boyfriend hiding in my house. He had a gun and started shooting me. He shot me twice and continued shooting at me, but the gun malfunctioned and he ran.

I was able to call 911 but I knew I was hurt pretty bad.

Mark Johnson called the cell phone of the man who shot me and left him a voice mail message. He called him back because he knew Mark and trusted him. The Texas Rangers and Marshall’s Office were then able to locate him and arrest him in Oklahoma for shooting me.

He is in prison for 75 years.

I had a long road to recovery, but I made it. My son and I will never forget the kindness and compassion that Mark Johnson showed us and the friendship we made along the way. When I see him now, he always has a big hug for me and wants to know how I am doing. That day in 2008 changed my life forever but I also made a lifelong friend in Mark Johnson and his wife.

I respect and trust the Police Officer that Mark Johnson is but I love him for being my friend and truly caring about me.

I support Mark Johnson as the Fannin County Sheriff and I hope you will do the same.
