Kinnaird also highlighted two special events Bonham Developers Conferences – BonDevCon 1 & 2 scheduled for mid-April and early May, focused on residential, then retail/commercial and light industrial developers respectively.

I SUPPORT MY SHERIFF 3/1/16 I have spent 31 years of my life at the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office. I have had the honor and pleasure to work with 4 elected Sheriff’s with different management styles and personalities but I can honestly say they were all good men and great to work for with a desire to serve the citizens of Fannin County.

I started to work at the Sheriff’s Office in 1988 as a Dispatcher/Jailer because at that time, you did both jobs. A short time later I moved to the position of Administrative Assistant to the Sheriff and have remained in that position.

The Sheriff’s Office was downtown Bonham and we housed 36 inmates in the jail. Everything was done with pen and paper. Our teletypes came through on a printer that was so old that it made grinding noises. The computers we had were huge. In the next few years we moved to a new jail on County Road 4200 which was much bigger and our jailers and dispatchers were now separate. We had a new computer system and were able to start entering offenses and arrests. Our dispatchers were able to enter calls and look up warrants and other information in the system. The Deputy vehicles had no radars or computers and they had to return to the Sheriff’s Office to complete their reports. Several years later we moved to the current Sheriff’s Office on Silo Road with the jail in a separate facility.

The Deputy cars now had radars.

Today, I now have computer software to enter most everything I do and the days of pen and paper are long gone. The last 3 years have brought many positive changes in such a short period of time. I now have a full time assistant that had only been part time for several years. The patrol vehicles are now well equipped and have computers that enable the Deputies to do driver’s license checks in the car and complete their reports and download them to the office without getting out of their car. Our dispatch center has been completely updated and no longer has 2 car radios sitting on a desk. We have an actual console and so much more technology. We have newer and well maintained vehicles. The Deputies are better equipped to ensure their safety. There is technology in the Investigations Department that I didn’t even knew existed.

The Fannin County Sheriff’s Office is a family. We support and help each other. We celebrate the high moments together and we are there for the low moments as well.

I support my Sheriff and I hope you will do the same. I say this with 31 years of my life dedicated to this office and the county I serve.

Homeschool Friends of Fannin County brought four adults and nine children to help at Open Arms Homeless Shelter on Tuesday, February 4th.

The group sorted through boxes of toiletries to separate and organize. Some also cleaned the cabinet shelves in the kitchen and bathrooms. Thanks so much to this wonderful group. Open Arms Shelter plans to open by March 2020.

Colored Hospital Cornerstone now at Museum

The Fannin County Museum of History is so pleased to have obtained from Dr. James Froelich and his wife Deidre the cornerstone from the old Colored Hospital in Bonham.

The Colored Hospital was located adjacent to Allen Memorial Hospital. After the closing of Allen Memorial and the Colored Hospital, Dr. Froelich acquired the property and thus the cornerstone. Dr. Froelich had been in discussions with Larry Standlee about moving the cornerstone to Museum, and they decided that Black History Month would be a good time for the move. Last week Larry and Glenn Taylor got the large stone and it is now in the Museum for all to see.

According to an article written

by Tim Davis in 2017, planning for the hospital began in 1935 and the eventual success was due to the efforts of the prominent black leader J. D. Johnson.

The effort to raise the funds took years and were assured in COMMISSIONER

The September 14, 1939 issue of the Bonham Daily Favorite carried an announcement of the dedication ceremonies and noted that among the speakers were the Mayor of Bonham, Rev. J. D. Johnson, Dr. A. B. Kennedy and Congressman Sam Rayburn.

Tim Davis noted: “To say that the FCCH was an actual hospital would be a huge stretch of the truth. It obviously lacked an emergency room, operating rooms and the other trappings of a standard hospital. More accurately stated, it was a recovery facility for black citizens who under state law had to receive Surgical, medical or obstetric services at Allen Memorial.”

Six years after its opening J. D. Johnson died in 1945 at the Colored Hospital of pneumonia.

Because of financial difficulties and the outmoded facility, S. B Allen Hospital closed in 1960 as did the Colored Hospital.

In October of 2018 my husband and I sat down at the kitchen table with our daughters and discussed with them my plans for running as County Commissioner of Precinct One. Even for young teenagers, this was big news in our household because we have always preached the importance of being engaged in your community and serving others.

As potentially becoming the first female ever elected Commissioner in Fannin County’s history, we had been warned that this campaign would likely bring some skepticism and maybe even a few ugly comments. Working 20 years at a police department toughens one up, so this was no deterrent to me! With our family in agreement and prayer pushing us onward, we set out on this amazing race.

Our timing could not have been better. Fannin County voters had just sent a powerful message demanding change with an overwhelming 75% of the vote going to County Judge Randy Moore. I, too, began receiving a wave of support from across the county.

The more I shared my vision of a prosperous Fannin County and my plans of making it a reality, local business owners, community leaders, ranchers, friends and even neighbors I had never met before began reaching out to me.

To date, I have held five public gatherings seeking input from area residents, stood at the doorway speaking with hundreds of neighbors and participated in two candidate debate forums. A third is planned in Ravenna on February 20th at 6:30pm.

I cannot express how grateful I am for all the encouragement and support our community has given me. To have complete strangers come up offering to display my signs or contribute to ads like this one motivates me to push forward!

The support has been so impressive, that a false rumor has begun to spread that my backing comes from a “core political group” and an “elite few”. This is laughable! Tell that to the many property owners along our roadways or the numerous homeowners in town proudly displaying my signs. While they may certainly be elite in my eyes, they by no means are few. As for this “core political group” ….if this is describing Conservative, Republican leadership who share my same vision of a better Fannin County….then I proudly accept their support!

The voters have been clear. We demand more from our County Commissioners than empty promises to fill potholes from a budget that has been overdrawn four of the last five years. We demand fiscally responsible leadership that will grow our economy, properly fund public safety and establish 3 and 5 year plans showing the path ahead.

Mexican food is one of my favorite foods, and sour cream chicken enchiladas are my favorite enchiladas. I have not tried this recipe yet, but it sure sounds good. I will try it when I get a chance, and I hope you do too! I’m thinking you can substitute the grilled fajita chicken that is sold now

in the packages instead of the chopped cooked chicken.

SOUR CREAM CHICKEN ENCHILADAS 2 cans cream of chicken soup 1 cup sour cream 1 (4 oz.) can chopped green chilies 1 pkg. green onion dip mix ½ tsp. salt ½ cup green onions, chopped 1 cup Cheddar cheese, grated 1 cup cooked chicken, chopped 12 corn tortillas Hot vegetable oil Preheat oven to 350°. Combine the first 5 ingredients and set aside. Combine and mix well the cheese, chicken, and onions. Set aside. Dip tortillas in hot oil quickly to soften.

Put about 2 to 3 tablespoons of chicken mixture on and roll up. Put a thin layer of the soup mixture in a 9x13 inch dish.

Place rolled tortillas on top.

Pour remaining soup mixture on top of rolled tortillas. Bake for about 30 minutes.

I Support Sheriff Mark Johnson The primaries are upon us and it’s our chance to decide who should be our sheriff.

I’m supporting Sheriff Mark Johnson for several reasons. I am a veteran and a political scientist so I look at these decisions differently than most and I want to share that with the county.

Sheriff Johnson has been the leader we need for our sheriff’s office. He has modernized the office by getting much-needed equipment that aids every officer in doing their job. He has negotiated a deal with the North Texas Municipal Water District to hire more deputies to patrol especially as the new lakes come to the county. He has made tough decisions that haven’t always been popular like allowing an inmate to marry. The reality is that yes an inmate has the right to get married and it happens every day across Texas and the nation. Your right to get married isn’t taken away because you commit a crime. The inmate was not given special privileges or allowed out of jail. The Sheriff made the right call!

I’ve listened to the two candidates and read their information on their websites. One is not presently a licensed peace officer and based on that will have to attend the academy again which will take time away from the office. The other has stated he will be out patrolling with the deputies. This while sounding good is not the trait of a leader.

A leader delegates and only when necessary steps in to say patrol. The Sheriff has many duties and responsibilities and focusing on patrolling is way down the list.

Leaders make tough and sometimes unpopular decisions or calls. Sheriff Johnson has done this and so much. That’s why I support Sheriff Mark Johnson.

In fact, I learned Texas Parks and Wildlife even pays the county a stipend for every

watercraft registered; in other words, Fannin County is failing to capitalize at a time when tax dollars are in need… how much overbudget is that courthouse?

Considering the new lakes currently being constructed, my wife and I recently purchased a watercraft and with title in hand, I excitedly walked into the Fannin County Tax Office. On that day, four clerks sat behind the counter, one of which was assisting another customer, and luckily, I walked straight to the counter. I laid the title on the counter and informed the clerk I needed to register my watercraft.

Imagine my surprise when she informed me “We don’t do that here.” Somewhat surprised, I questioned why they do not register watercraft and she politely responded “We chose not to.”

I was perplexed… I can register my car, truck, motorcycle and trailers but not a boat simply because our County Tax Assessor ‘chose

Perils of a Bear Hunt in Alaska

In 1954, my twin brother, Hez, and I were 22 and our cousin, Claude Hicks, was 27.

We decided to visit our parents who taught school to Eskimos at Quinhagak, Alaska which was a mile from the Bering Sea. Eskimos told us bears lived on a nearby mountain. We got the fever to shoot a bear. Dad, Dave Ray, borrowed three rifles.

He was 57 and tough as a boot.

He didn’t take a gun but went for fun. Our directions were to go a mile to the Bering Sea, turn left two miles, and go five miles up a river made by melted snow to a mountain. We weren’t told the river was hidden by entering the Sea at a sharp angle.

We went in a heavy iron river-boat with a ten-horse motor.

We added an 8-inch board to the low sides, and hoped that would keep ocean waves out. Constant bailing was required because there was a gap between the steel and the wood. The main problem was, we were so heavy the boat went through waves instead of over them. That got us pretty wet and cold because it was about 40 degrees. Claude said we were in the ‘mouth’ of the river because the water on his face wasn’t salty. We went a little past the river before putting the boat on the beach.

Claude had matches and started a fire to dry-out and get warm for over an hour. My partners got in the boat. Since I was the only one with hip boots, I pushed off to reach water deep enough to run the motor. I pushed and pushed but gave up after fifty yards because the tide went out. In a little while, as far as our eyes could see, there was nothing but mud except for the water spreading out two inches deep from the river.

The mud was knee-deep as we went to the beach and ate supper. They had their bedrolls. Mine was in the boat where I would sleep.

We had six hours for the tide to come back. I worried the heavy boat might stick in the mud and not float. I stayed awake so long, I was asleep when it came in. When Claude’s shooting failed to wake me, Dad told him to shoot closer.

We loaded the boat and started up-river. The current was so strong, I looked at the bank to see if we were moving. We helped the motor out with some paddles. After seeing fish in the clear water, we agreed with Claude to catch some with his fishing pole. We caught enough for supper and spent our second night on the river.

We’d never seen the mountain because of clouds. There were two rivers that joined.

After six hours, we knew we’d chosen wrong when water became too sallow to run the motor. The clouds lifted and the mountain looked near because it was huge. We decided to walk.

We knew when we returned, it would be hard to find the boat so we made a tall pole by tying paddles together and Claude tied his red bandana on top. We tied the pole so it could be seen in some bushes.

Tundra is hard to walk on. You have to lift your feet two feet to get over it and then sink in mud.

We divided our stuff to be carried. After an hour of walking, Dad said, “I don’t know why you guys are complaining; I have the heaviest load.”

I said, “I’ll trade with you.”

(He had a back pack and I had a duffel bag that required walking in a leaning position.) I don’t know how he did it, but he threw the duffel bag in the air saying, “Light as a feather!”

After six hours we’d gone about three miles. We stopped

at 10:00 P.M. There was still light enough to see. Half an hour later, Dad staggered in and threw the duffel bag down saying, “What’s in this?”

We ate and went to sleep, but some strange noise woke us up. Dad asked if the rifles were loaded. Next morning, the mountain didn’t look any closer.

We ate the last of our food, and started back to the boat. We didn’t even discuss our unanimous decision.

Claude ran out of energy. He’d lay down until we were almost out of sight. When he started walking, we’d lay down and rest until he reached us. Then we’d start walking. (The bears may have been laughing at us.)

At each ‘meeting’, Claude used

his binoculars to look for the red flag.

As the day went on, our stops got more frequent, and the distance covered got shorter. At last, Claude yelled, “I see the flag!” We became delirious happy; knowing our ordeal was over.

Going with the current, got us to the ocean really fast, but there was only mud. We pulled the boat up the bank, and left everything in it.

Compare to tundra, the beach felt like an escalator to Quinhagak. The next morning, I retrieved the boat. Without their weight, the boat went OVER the waves very fast.

I have also worked with HR to terminate employees that just wanted to show up for a job and have no responsibility.

•Neither of my opponents has the experience I offer of managing employees or budgets at the supervisory or owner level I have worked across the county to bring us closer together with actions and not just words: •I worked with the Honey Grove and Leonard Chambers to improve their fundraisers •I maintain the website that is responsible for bringing the greatest number of tourists to Fannin County over the past few years: •The Fannin County Quilt Barn Trail •I worked with executives from other Fannin County Chambers to meet with various North Texas Municipal Water District directors about changing the name of the new lake back to Bois d’Arc. This was even after the past judge assured us that our actions would mess up the process. As most people prefer, they were very receptive to discussions that were more civil and less about them being the bad guys.

•Over the past 30 years I have been active in our community by writing articles about school bonds, the counties effort to have a tourist train, the functioning and finances of the county jail, and multiple articles and speeches promoting the Fannin county area.

•Until this election neither of my opponents has demonstrated a public stand on any issue of political importance to our entire county’s future.

I understand where the county is financially and will do whatever it takes to become fiscally stable.

•I will not work toward a balanced budget someday down the road, we will have a balanced budget and start the process to rebuild these funds for the future as soon as I am elected or I will not vote to approve any budget.

•If it comes to Unity in the court, or solving the counties very real problems, I will work to solve the problems at the cost of Unity if that is what it takes.

•Both my opponents promote unity and cooperative relationships to correct our problems – look where that has got us: •A building project that is $10 million over budget •Displaced county offices •A soon to be maxed-out ability to borrow money with our AA bond rating.

•A general fund that has lost money for four of the past six years and will lose a million dollars this year.

•No plans to work on one of the most important issues facing our county – Water •Can we really afford to keep the attitude of go along to get along in place any longer?

Joey Koo named Volunteer of the Quarter

Joey Koo has been named the Volunteer of the Quarter for the Fannin County Children’s Center.

Joey Koo has been named the Volunteer of the Quarter for the Fannin County Children’s Center. Koo started volunteering at the center a little under a year ago. He is an eighteen-yearold home school student and will be attending Southwestern University in the fall to study Art History.

“Being homeschooled I have extra time during each week,” said Koo. “That gives me the opportunity to volunteer and give back, so during this last year I have really tried to use that time well and hopefully help out a little and make a difference.”

Koo has helped prepare newsletters and invitations for mailing. One day, he assembled

about a dozen new chairs that the center purchased. Last 2/18/20 fall, he and another volunteer helped put together many of the table decorations for the center’s big fundraising event “Justice Is Served.”

When he is not volunteering at the center or completing his studies, Koo enjoys painting and drawing, going to museums, and spending time with friends and family. He lives in Bonham with his grandmother, dog and two birds.

“Joey is a great volunteer because he very passionate about helping others,” said Andrea Lappin, Community Development Director for the Children’s Center. “He is always willing to jump in and help wherever needed and very dependable. His enthusiasm, commitment and compassion are contagious, and he is a joy to work with. We are very

I am now 37 years old and after all those years, I still remember how Mark Johnson made me feel like life was worth living. You don’t find someone like that every day.

Step 6- Broadcast one half of the seed as uniformly as possible. Sow the remaining half

Step 7- Press the seed into the soil by walking on it or rolling over the area. The seeds only need to be 1/16 of an inch deep. Many seeds will be visible. Seeds sown too deep will not germinate.

By Linda Brinlee, Master Gardener Fannin County By any other name, wildflowers could be called weeds. Native wildflowers are low maintenance, attract bees and hummingbirds, and can be very fragrant. Seeds are usually the first way many gardeners try to introduce wildflowers, often without success. Aggie-Horticulture recommends the following for preparing the soil correctly and ensuring the seed has direct contact to the soil by pressing or rolling.

Step 1- Select a well-drained site. Moist sites create too much competition for wildflowers.

Step 2- Use an herbicide to eliminate competition (Optional). However, clover and cool weather grasses are too

Winter Horse Health Tips

Hayes Equine Veterinary Services - Winter time brings lots of fun activities and holidays. However, we as horse owners tend to get a little laxer in the care of our horses at this time. Whether it’s due to the cold or the lack of horsey activities to keep us busy, we usually spend less time at the barn taking care of our furry friends. Here are a few tips to keeping your horses happy and healthy through the winter and into the spring.

One of the things to check on your horse is his body condition. We often forget that fuzzy horses are not the same as fat horses. And adding a blanket into the mix, and that makes it even more difficult to tell how your horse is doing. In order to assess body condition, you have to put your hands on the horse and feel all the way down to the skin, especially over the ribs. Use your fist as a guide.

If your horse’s ribs feel like your knuckles (can see and feel them), your horse is too thin. If your horse’s ribs feel like the back of your hand, where you can feel the ribs but not see them, he’s perfect.

If you run your fingers over the pad of your hand, where you have to dig to feel the bones, and your horse’s ribs

feel similar, your horse is too fat. Talk to your veterinarian about feeding changes if you think your horse is either too thin or too fat. And be sure to remove that blanket and feel those ribs.

Regular grooming is also very necessary to maintain skin health. Be sure, especially when we get lots of rain, to be checking your horse’s skin for any signs of Rain Rot or Scratches that will cause him to lose his hair. These conditions can be easily diagnosed by your veterinarian, but may go on for long periods undiagnosed if you aren’t grooming your horse regularly!

Remember, horses don’t like to drink cold water! We see a lot of colicky horses whenever the weather gets below freezing and the water tanks get a layer of ice on them.

Chipping the ice so the horse can drink may not be enough.

Consider purchasing a heated bucket or a water tank heater to keep your horse drinking even on the coldest of days.

And adding a little salt (1T) can help increase your horse’s thirst and keep him drinking.

Something that a lot of horse owners don’t realize is that Coastal Bermuda hay has a high tendency to cause impaction colic. So, on those

incredibly cold days where you need to feed extra hay for heat, or when you first put out a new round bale, you may want to find ways to ration the hay so your horse can’t pig out and forget about drinking water. You could also consider adding a little alfalfa (hay, pellets, or cubes) to the rations to keep everything moving along smoothly. Bale nets or slow feeders are great ways to keep your horse eating but simulate grazing where they can’t pig out.

Most horses don’t need winter blankets if they have shelter. Even if your horse is shivering, oftentimes just giving them an extra flake of hay (see above paragraph) will generate more heat through digestion that putting a blanket on the horse. And yes, it needs to be hay, not grain as hay causes a rise in temperature due to how it’s fermented in the hind gut. Really, horses that need blankets tend to be the old, thin ones. And be careful to never put a blanket on a wet horse!

Hopefully, with these tricks, you’ll be able to start riding in the spring with no worries about seeing your veterinarian first. As always, call with any questions, comments or concerns.

Cooper FAIR. Water clear; 52-54 degrees; 0.6’ low. Largemouth bass are fair on Carolina rigged worms, crankbaits, and spinners in timber, and shallower habitats. The white bass are good on slabs and live bait in deeper water 30-40 feet. Catfish are good on live and cut bait.

Lavon FAIR. Water stained; 55 degrees: 1.50’ low. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows fishing drops, and significant structures. White bass are slow.

Black bass are fair on crankbaits, worms, lizards and jigs around untouched shorelines.

Catfish are good on prepared baits.

Ray Roberts

GOOD. Water stained: 51-52 degrees; 0.38’ high. Largemouth bass remain good on worms and lizards seeking deeper structure. White bass are excellent on minnows on deep points. Crappie are slow on jigs and minnows. Catfish are fair on live bait and stinkbait.

Texoma FAIR. Water stained; 50-52 degrees; 0.62’ low. Striped bass are fair using live bait and shad with large schools on main lake ledges. Largemouth bass are good fishing plastics and crankbaits. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs by boathouses, submerged vegetation, and timber. Catfish are fair on cut bait and minnows in river structures.

Game Wardencarcasses.

Field Notes

Phoning for Backup Game wardens set up a whitetail buck decoy in Trinity County after receiving reports of road hunting activity in the area. After about an hour, a truck stopped in the road and quickly backed up. Wardens watched the operator hide the vehicle and make a phone call.

A few minutes later a second vehicle approached from the opposite direction. The second driver exited the truck with a rifle and loaded it. The hunter fired two shots at the decoy before he was stopped by game wardens. Multiple cases for hunting white-tailed deer from a public roadway were filed. Wardens collected one shell casing for evidence and were unable to find the second casing. K9 game warden Blitz was brought in and found the second casing within minutes.

Left at the Scene of the Crime A Gonzales County game warden investigating a complaint about illegal dumping of deer carcasses discovered an agriculture tax exemption identification card next to a set of tire tracks at the scene. The warden knew of a deer camp near the dump site and traveled to that location.

Upon entering the camp and introducing himself, the warden shook hands with the owner of the tax ID card. The hunter told the warden that he had shot a nice buck and after a brief inspection for tagging compliance, the warden asked where he had discarded the carcass. The hunter admitted to dumping it on the county road. The warden then advised the hunter that he had left something with the carcass that he would like to return to the hunter. The Texas AG Exempt Tax ID card was rightfully returned, and a citation issued for illegal dumping of the

Didn’t Stop in the Name of Love On October 7, game wardens in Presidio and Brewster County were patrolling south on U.S. Highway 67 when they were flagged down by some motorists on the side of the road who were victims of a hit and run. The suspect vehicle description was given, and the game wardens headed south in pursuit. State troopers were advised of the accident and were able to obtain a better description of the vehicle after interviewing the victims.

The game wardens located the suspect vehicle with a missing driver-side mirror, a traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was arrested without incident just outside Shafter. The trooper working the accident case came to the arresting location to match the chrome from the debris left

by the suspect’s vehicle at the accident location. The driver of the truck was 1/1/19 charged with accident involving damage to a vehicle, a Class B misdemeanor, and placed

During transport to jail, the suspect freely admitted to being in a hurry to see his girlfriend in Mexico. The case is pending.

DAVID MICHAEL PRICE JANUARY 5, 1945 FEBRUARY 3, 2020

Left us on February 3, 2020 to be with the Lord.

He was born on January 5, 1945 to David and Beth Price at the old Bonham Hospital where the Creative Arts building is now. Michael met Judy at Arlington High School in 1963. They were married in 1964 and enjoyed 54 years together.

Michael was a proud Texan.

He did enjoy working for Dr Pepper and moving a lot of dirt for Rodman Excavation.

Michael did believe in helping family. He would go help his cousins with anything and any mischief they could find.

Michael did love to tinker with anything mechanical.

Michael is survived by his wife Judy Ann, Son David and

Misti of Denver, Colorado; daughter Robin and Scott of Sherman, Texas. Five grandchildren; Emily Denise, Marshal Allen, Garrett Allen, Grace Elizabeth, and Clarissa Joan. Plus, many cousins and a lot of adopted family members.

Michael is preceded in death by his parents; Beth and David Price, brother; Gary Allen, Grandparents; Jewell and Roy Walker, and a Granddaughter Elizabeth Ann. A memorial service was held at First United Methodist Church of Bonham 801 Star St. Bonham, Texas 75418 on February 7, 2020 from 1P.M. to 3 P.M. in the Fellowship Hall.

Tammy Rena (Boyer) Jeffries was born in Bonham, TX on February 15, 1965 at Allen Memorial Hospital to Clifton and Linda (Jarrell) Boyer. As a child Tammy, along with her brother, enjoyed roller skating. They basically grew up out at the skating rink. She enjoyed going to grandma’s house on Sunday’s for lunch, where she would meet with all of her cousins, usually fried chicken and mashed potatoes as mandatory starters followed by the enjoyment of playing in the country.

Tammy enjoyed school and graduated from Bonham High School in 1983, she then ventured out to make her mark on the world. Tammy settled into working with medical claims for insurance companies and eventually had a rewarding career working for numerous doctors filing medical claims. She enjoyed country music and occasionally dancing.

Tammy was of the Christian Faith and loved Jesus; she was baptized into Christ at Northside Church of Christ.

She is survived by her sons, Blake Herpeche and wife Bekka and Jarod Jeffries and wife Alora, father, Clifton Boyer; brother, Tim Boyer; and nephew, Kevin Boyer.

MARTHA GARRETT Funeral services for Martha Garrett, age 71, were held at 11:00 am Thursday February 13, 2020 at the Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Bonham.

Officiating was Brad Smithart and Aaron Williams. Ms. Garrett passed away Monday February 10 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Martha Louise (Smith) Garrett was born June 30, 1948 in Sherman, Texas the daughter of Louis Lee and Jessie Ruey (Mulder) Smith. Martha was retired after working 28 years as Assistant Manager of Wal Mart in Bonham.

In 1985 Martha began her career at Wal Mart. In 2 short years she worked her way up to Assistant Manager. She spent the next 25 years being a leader and mentor to her fellow associates. She loved her job, coworkers and community. She went out of her way to help anyone who needed it. She retired in 2013.

Martha’s first love was her family.

She devoted her life to raising her two daughters. She taught them to be strong, independent women.

Becoming a MeMe brought more joy to her life than she could have ever imagined. Whether it was shopping, going to the movies or cheering from the stands she loved spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids.

She was absolutely adored and cherished by her family.

Martha is survived by her two daughters, Robin Smithart and husband Chris of Corsicana, Tx.

JERRY OLIVER BANGE Jerry Oliver Bange was born to Arthur J. and Elsa Lucille Oliver Bange on Friday, October 13, 1933, in Saint Louis Missouri.

Jerry served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Following active duty, he attended the University of Arizona and graduated in 1959.

Jerry served in several capacities as a public servant for the purpose of economic development in Georgia.

Jerry operated a small business in North Carolina where he lived before spending time with family in Atlanta and making a new home in Denton, Texas.

The Lord called him home on Monday, February 3, 2020.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Marjorie Elizabeth (Betty), Irene Joyce Faulkner, Isabella Allison Britton; his great grandson Isaiah Blackwood; and great granddaughter Stephanie Steinhardt Halvorson.

Eric worked for Standard Supply for 30 years and enjoyed western art. His most favorite pastime was hunting and fishing. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and a proud supporter of the NRA. Rebecca married Charlie Black Stroud III on June 23, 1975 in Dallas, Texas. Together they raised three wonderful children. Her favorite sports teams were the Dallas Stars and Dallas Cowboys. Rebecca would often join her father at the fifty-yard line, watching and cheering for the Cowboys. She was a genuine person who never met a stranger. She would greet you with open arms and embrace you with a hug. She was a dedicated and devoted friend. Rebecca loved to brag on her kids and grandbabies. She lived her life for her children, then for her grandbabies; family was her world. Rebecca’s memory will forever be cherished, she will be greatly missed. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister, Kathy Tippett, and her granddaughter, Elizabeth Dreier.

Rebecca is survived by her son, Brian Stroud and wife Amy of Mesquite, Texas; daughters, Misty Stroud-Martinez and husband Paul of Ferris, Texas and Jessica Neely and husband James Schoggin of Bonham, Texas; brother, Ray Tippett of Oregon; sisters, Deborah Lawley and husband Michael of Athens, Texas, Teresa Tippett and fiancé Kenny Smith of Dallas, Texas, and Denise Rose Eudy and husband Shane of Blooming Grove, Texas; grandchildren, Shawn Stroud, Tristan Stroud, Alexis Stroud, Samuel Stroud, Jackson Neely, and Julianne Busby; honorary grandchildren, Kalee Rush, Kimbree Rush, Kaitlen Rush, and Miles Davis; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

MICHAEL FREDERICK MURRAY Michael Frederick Murray, 81 of Telephone, TX, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at Faith Hospice in Dallas, TX. He was born November 28, 1938 in Dallas, TX. He was a graduate of The Hill Prep School in Pottstown, PA, then SMU, later achieving a master’s degree in Counseling.

Mike retired to his farm in Telephone, TX after a long career in the securities industry.

He married Gwen Atkinson, and they enjoyed an outdoorsy, country life; hunting, fishing, gardening, golfing and raising dogs for 22 magical years. Mike and Gwen both became counselors, and dedicated their counseling to all those who needed it as their church mission. Mike loved time with his 5 grandkids, to them he was “Big Daddy.” He taught them to fish and golf, while also attending all of their sporting events, and taking them on a yearly trip to the State Fair of Texas. Mike was a kind and caring man, a hard worker, a fantastic storyteller and an exceptional husband, brother and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen Murray, sister, Galen Bauchman, brother, Jeff Murray, numerous nieces and nephews, 2 stepchildren, 5 grandkids, and countless friends.

To all of them, he will be dearly missed.

JAMES PRICE STIFF “JIM” Former Denison City Manager James Price Stiff (“Jim”) passed away peacefully at his Denison home Sunday Feb. 9th at 9pm. Jim was born April 4th, 1943 in Dallas, TX to Judd Price and Margaret Smith Stiff. Jim and his twin brother, Ben Stiff, and their older brother Judd Stiff attended Highland Park schools in Dallas, TX. Jim attended the University of Missouri, where he studied journalism. He furthered his studies at Texas Tech University with a double degree in political science and journalism. Jim’s first role in city government was in Fort Worth, Texas. He then moved on to become City Manager of White Settlement, Mineral Wells, Denison and retired as City Manager of Bonham. Jim served our government for 33 years as a City Manager in the state of Texas. Several former city council members have said, “Jim Stiff was one of the most intelligent men they had ever known”. He was always for the everyday people and the less fortunate, who couldn’t always help themselves. He became a master at scouting and one of the leaders of the Texoma area Boy Scouts council. He loved helping young men to become Boy Scouts and help them to receive their wood badge honor.

Jim was married to Jane Wright in 1969. They had a son, Sterling in 1972 in addition to Jane’s daughter, Sharra, who Jim considered his own. Jim and Jane were married 18 years until Jane’s passing in 1985. They were both members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Denison. February 27, 1990 Jim married Dianne Henry Hudgins. They were married by Father Gerard of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Sherman. Jim and Dianne Stiff were about to celebrate 32 years of marriage.

Dianne cared for her husband Jim for many years after him 2/11/20 having major illnesses.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother, father and twin brother. Jim leaves behind his wife, Dianne, his “special needs” stepdaughter, Dawn; son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren, Sterling, Ellena, Matias and Alessandra of Seattle, Washington; stepdaughter and son in law, Amy and Greg Oates of Whitesboro; stepdaughter and granddaughters, Paige, Savannah and Piper Schwartz of Australia; stepdaughter, Sharra and Todd Lovelady and grandchildren, Skye and Eli, of Ingram, TX and brother and sister-in-law, Judd and Mary Jane Stiff of California. He also leaves behind three loving caregivers, Debbie Stephens, Robbie Williams and Monette Whipple all of Denison. He and Dianne were thankful for all the wonderful staff at Heart to Heart Hospice, who gave him much dignity by allowing him to receive care and live his last days at home.

A memorial service in honor of Jim Stiff was held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Denison, TX, Saturday February 15th at 11:00 a.m. A reception followed the service in Kohfeldt Hall at St. Luke’s.

Honorary pallbearers were Brian Peeler, Pete Phillips, Bill Jennings, Andy Wilkens, Butch Ewing, Mike Alexander.

Memorials may be made in his name to St. Luke’s Church and St. Jude’s Hospital for Children.

By Rich Hilliard Postseason qualifiers for the upcoming boys high school basketball playoffs from Fannin County had almost all been determined, through play on Feb. 11.

In District 23-1A, Ector and Dodd City have each assured another postseason advance.

The pair remained atop 23-1A with 11-1 records, heading into

their Feb. 14 rematch at Dodd City.

It equates the sixth-straight playoffs trip for the senior-laden Eagles and fourth-consecutive for the Hornets.

Last year, each reached the area round of the Region III1A playoffs. It took Slidell, the eventual 1A state champion, to prematurely stop Ector’s postseason run.

Elsewhere, Trenton has as-

sured its first boys basketball postseason in six years. The Tigers will advance as the fourthplace qualifier from 13-2A to the Region II-2A playoffs.

Additionally, fifth-place Leonard remained in contention in 10-3A for its fourthstraight postseason trip, through play on Feb. 11.

Jodie Payne has been named Chief Operations Officer. She has previously served as SVP, Deposit Operations for Legend Bank for the past five years. Jodie began her banking career over 40 years ago as a teller at National Bank of Texas in Fort Worth. Fannin County Museum of History The Fannin County Museum of History has a number of beautiful Victorian christening gowns. These long “gowns” were worn by both baby girls and boys, and photographs were often taken of the babies in these gowns.

This gown dates from 1905.

We know the date of this gown because we have a photo of young Irene Webb wearing the gown. Many people in Bonham of a certain age will remember Irene Webb and her sister Lucille.

Visit the Fannin County Museum of History to see this christening gown and many other beautiful pieces of clothing. Bring your children or grandchildren to see how the citizens of Fannin County dressed over 100 years ago.

The Museum is located a few blocks south of the Courthouse Square in Bonham in the old Texas & Pacific Depot, and is open Tuesday-Saturday, noon – 4 pm.

I WAS A “SMALL TOWN COP” I spent almost 18 years of my career working as a small town Police Chief in Fannin County. Those years prepared me for the Sheriff’s position in many ways and I received valuable law enforcement experience and life experience.

In Savoy, I was the only officer for most of my 8 years in that town.

I learned the following while in Savoy…

1.) Independence- I responded to calls alone and rarely had backup.

2.) Discipline- I did not have set hours to work. I worked during the times when I knew I was needed most- during school start and stop times, during school events, on the weekends when more people were out and during times of increased criminal activity.

3.) Budgeting- I prepared the budget, presented the budget to the City Council and adhered to that budget.

4.) Resilience- I worked long hours at times. I owned 2 businesses. I took phone calls from citizens when I was off duty. I responded to calls in Savoy when I was off duty at the request of the Sheriff’s Office, Mayor or anyone else who felt I was needed.

5.) Team work- I worked closely with the Mayor and City Council. They had a desire to take care of their police department. I presented a need and they found a way.

6.) Awareness- I learned to read people. I had to watch body language, stature and visual cues. I had to be aware of my surroundings. I was alone and backup wasn’t just a minute away.

7.) Grant writing ability- In 1996 I applied for and was awarded a grant for “more cops on patrol”.

I spent almost 10 years in Honey Grove as their Chief of Police. I was the officer on duty during the day shift.

I learned the following while in Honey Grove….

1.) Leadership- I supervised 3 full time officers and a part time officer. I responded when they needed assistance.

2.) Scheduling- I prepared a work schedule to provide the City of Honey Grove with 24 hour coverage, 7 days per week and there were very few times that this didn’t occur.

3.) Flexibility- We worked as a team and covered for each other when needed. There was a time that myself and one other officer worked 12 hour shifts every day for 2 weeks straight.

4.) Budgeting- I prepared the budget for the Police Department, presented it to the Mayor and City Council and adhered to my budget.

5.) Community- I implemented community policing and trained all my officers to be community police officers. I became an integrated part of Honey Grove. My home was there and my wife and I supported and participated in events throughout my time there.

6.) Volunteering- I spent many hours putting out and picking up flags for the Senior Center flag program. I delivered Meals on Wheels during inclement weather. I even received a call to go to the Senior Center and turn off the roast that was in the crock pot because the weather was bad and Ann didn’t want to get out yet.

7.) Understanding and Patience- I listened as frustrated parents couldn’t deal with their children, grown children couldn’t deal with their elderly parents and neighbors couldn’t get along.

8.) Enforcement- city ordinances were a big part of the job and were enforced fairly and without partiality.

Being a “small town cop” for almost 18 years was12some of the best years of my Pct 5 and life. I took the time to get to know people and police each town the way leadership wanted it policed. I still believe in community policing. I have helped to identify many criminals and assist in solving crimes for other agencies because of the relationships I formed. I knew what cars people drove, I knew their kids and most of the time I knew their dogs by name.

The training I received was not minimal, it was extensive training and the exact same training provided to the large metropolitan areas in Texas through the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute. I have a challenge coin given to me by the Dallas Police Chief after we spent a week together in training.

During my years as a Police Chief, I enforced traffic laws but I also worked a wide variety of cases that included burglaries, thefts, drugs, car accidents with fatalities, attempted murders, family violence, sexual assaults, child abuse, elder abuse, fraud and suicides.

I have worked criminal cases on teachers, preachers, firemen, police officers, business managers and an elected official and all resulted in an arrest and conviction.

I worked closely with the Sheriff’s Office, Texas Rangers, FBI, US Marshalls, Fannin County Children’s Center, Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services, Savoy ISD, Honey Grove ISD and the local long term care facilities in each town.

Being a Police Chief or “small town cop” as a few like to call me was invaluable experience and definitely prepared me for the role of Sheriff. I still apply all the principles I learned as a Police Chief to my role as Sheriff.

I respectfully ask for your vote on March 3rd in the Republican primary.

Sherman, Texas, February 6, 2020 – Registration for Camp Dragonfly is now open. Camp Dragonfly is a weekend retreat, led by professional clinicians and trained staff, for children ages 8-12 who have suffered the loss of a loved one. All activities at Camp Dragonfly are designed to help children heal and live successfully after loss. During the weekend, campers have the opportunity to participate in art activities, games, nature hikes, discussions, and a campfire with s’mores!

“Campers learn ways to process feelings and treasure memories. Camp is not about forgetting, it is about healing.

We use exercises to help the children learn to process grief and then fun activities to practice the coping skills they are learning,” said Nancy Jackson, Community Development Director and Camp Director.

“Children grieve differently than adults. Some children have behavioral problems, some struggle with schoolwork, some become argumentative or fearful, some hesitate to be away from a parent, and many don’t like to be alone.”

Children dealing with grief often feel isolated and feel that no one understands. “My child very much enjoyed camp, she has always felt different from other children and camp seemed to make her feel like she belonged,” said a parent whose daughter attended a previous session. “The grief counselor I talked to was awesome! She was very honest and straightforward with me.

She even asked how I was handling everything.”
