9/13/16 Fannin County Commissioners Court – Reports, Purchases & Christmas Wishes

Tuesday, December 21, 2021, Senior Fannin County Commissioner Jerry Magness called to order at 8:50 a.m., a Special Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. A quorum was established as all four County Commissioners were present with County Judge Randy Moore not present.

2. Hold and Attend a PUBLIC HEARING to hear comments regarding the proposal to establish a speed limit of 30 m.p.h. on County Road 1255 in Savoy: After asking if anyone was wishing to speak on this matter, Commissioner Magness waited a few minutes and when no-one came forward, he asked for a motion to adjourn.

3. Adjourn: Motion was made, seconded, and passed to adjourn at 8:52 a.m.

Discussion, consideration, and action to award Bank Depository Application: Bill Yarbro of Legend Bank gave a brief presentation in his bid to hold onto Fannin County Bank Depository business while Alan McDonald of First United Bank gave reasons why Fannin County should switch to his bank. After hearing from both businessmen, a discussion ensued led by Commissioner Lackey and Fannin County Treasurer David Woodson with reasons as to why it would be the better decision to keep the County’s accounts with Legend. Commissioner

Self made the motion to award the Bank Depository Application to Legend Bank with Commissioner Lackey seconding the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

9. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve minutes from 12/14/2021 (S) and 11/30/2021 (R): Motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve minutes.

10.Discussion, consideration, and action to set a speed limit of 30 m.p.h. on County Road 1255 in Savoy, Texas: Commissioner Lane spoke about how the citizens signed a petition requesting this. A motion was made by Commissioner Lane to set the speed limit at 30 m.p.h. on CR 1255 in Savoy, seconded

by Commissioner Self.

Motion passed unanimously.

On that same morning at 9:00 a.m., Commissioner Magness called to order the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court.

Noting that Quorum was established, Commissioner Magness asked the Youth Minister of the Northside Church of Christ of Bonham, Jordan Willis, to lead the Invocation. Pledges were led by Major James Manis, retired.

Introductions: Commissioner Self introduced his wife and his daughter Callie and son Cooper.

Discussion, consideration, and action regarding Courthouse Restoration: Commissioner Magness read the update as follows: EXTERIOR – Install sidewalks and curb sections; Install remaining storm sewer inlets and site water; Clean out perimeter planters and place mulch; Prepare landscape beds on corners; Install conduits for the exterior camera

system and lighting; Caulk remaining windows.

INTERIOR – Ongoing millwork includes Wainscot, Door Frame Extensions, Window Trim; Welding detail pieces on Cast Iron Stairs; Final paint walls and steel in access stairwell; Paint historic stencil design in Courtroom walls; Install metal ceiling panels; Data and Phone cabling termination.

6. Discussion regarding EMS monthly report for November 2021: Bonham Fire Chief Scott Ridling gave a report of being fully staffed and receiving 364 calls for the month; noted there is more room in the local hospitals for Covid patients; stated Leonard is averaging about 3 to 4 calls a day; discussed Covid funds received and discussed the particulars involving having placed an order for a new ambulance.

7. Discussion and annual update by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension for Agriculture: County Extension Agent Cody Maxwell gave a brief agriculture report. He began with the total number of face-to-face direct contacts receiving help as being 5,922. He then noted the total overall number of people receiving agricultural assistance through all the programs, radio, u-tube channels, etc., was 99,742.

He explained how the beef cattle enterprise was the number one educational area (livestock and foraging plan.) He noted how in the U.S. there are 31.4 million beef cattle, in Texas, there are 4.69 million beef cows with 41,000 of those beef cattle in Fannin County. After more discussion about the Texoma Beef Cattle Alliance and the amount of money they have been able to save producers with their various programs, he concluded by noting that with the closing down of The Warrior radio station, they are now

This chicken soup recipe is light, healthy, and cozy. It uses wholesome everyday ingredients and is sure to become a family favorite!

LEMON CHICKEN ORZO SOUP 2 stalks of celery chopped finely 2 medium carrots peeled and chopped finely ½ medium onion chopped 1 Tbsp. butter 1 Tbsp. olive oil 3 cloves garlic minced 2 Tbsp. flour 6 cups chicken broth ¼ teaspoon Italian seasoning 1.5 lbs. uncooked chicken breasts 1 c. uncooked orzo 1 Tbsp. lemon juice or to taste 1 Tbsp. chopped parsley or to taste Salt & Pepper to taste Saute the celery, carrots, and onions in a large soup

for about 30 seconds, then add the flour and cook for another minute or so.

Pour in chicken broth and stir until the flour has dissolved, then add the Italian seasoning and chicken. Bring the soup to a boil Cover the soup(lid slightly ajar), and reduce the heat and simmer until chicken is done or thermometer reads 165 degrees Stir in the orzo and cook for another 10 minutes or until the orzo is cooked through. I keep the lid off and stir it fairly often because it tends to stick to the bottom of the pot.

Take the chicken out of the pot and cut it up, then add it back in. Add the lemon juice, parsley, and season the soup with salt & pepper as needed. Serve Immediately.

This soup will be good on a cold winter evening!

regulation; parent tract to remain Agriculture only: Fannin County Development Services Director Di Hopkins explained why this was being requested and noted her approval. Commissioner Lackey made the motion to approve with Commissioner Self seconding the motion.

Discussion, consideration, and action to select members for the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) per Senate Bill 476: After information given from the Executive Director of the Fannin County Children’s Center, Sandy Barber, about a functioning SART existing in Fannin County, Commissioner Magness stated this would be passed on.

Discussion, consideration, and action to approve Resolution and Order to acquire surplus jail furniture, fixtures, and equipment from Newton County as recommended and approved by Fannin County Public Facilities Corporation’s: After some discussion, a motion was made by Commissioner Self to approve the Resolution, seconded by Commissioner Lane and passed unanimously.

14. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve TAPS In-Kind letter for 2022: Commissioner Lackey explained how this is something done every year, does not cost the County anything, and then made the motion to approve with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion. Motion passed.

15. Discussion, consideration, and action to raise

the limit on the Commissioners Purchase Order limit from $1,500.00 to $2,000.00: Discussion ensued regarding the continual rising costs of items such as blades. Commissioner Lackey made the motion to raise the limit to $3,250.00. A motion was seconded by Commissioner Self and passed.

16. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve the purchase of a 2005 Dodge Flat Bed for $24,157.00 for Precinct 3: Commissioner Magness explained that this agenda item was worded incorrectly. It should be to approve the purchase of a 2015 Chevrolet 1-ton flatbed for $32,000 with a trade-in of a 2005 Dodge Flat Bed (trade-in value of $8,000.00) deducted from the price. Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve the purchase of a 2015 Chevrolet 1 ton flatbed from Black Land Motors for $24,157.00 with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion. Motion passed.

17. Discussion, consideration, and action to create a budget line item from Contingency for items needed by the Facilities Coordinator to begin bringing County-owned buildings into compliance; exit lighting, egress lighting, conver-

sion to LED lighting, etc.: Michelle Case explained the need for this and discussion ensued with input from the Facilities Coordinator Kenneth Duffek. Commissioner Lackey made the motion to create a line item with $5,000.00 moved from contingency to 409. Commissioner Self seconded the motion and the motion passed.

18. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve the purchase of a Boom Mower for Precinct 2; $150,300.00 to be paid out in annual payments for the next 60 months: Commissioner Self explained how the current mower has often needed repair and noted it would be sold at auction. A motion was made by Commissioner Self to approve the purchase of a Boom Mower with Commissioner Lackey seconding the motion. Motion passed.

19. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve payment of bills: Motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve payment of bills.

20. Public Forum: A citizen of Bonham wished the Commissioners a Merry Christmas and thanked them for a job well done.

Commissioner Self echoed the previous comments wishing everyone a good Christmas with family and asking for patience with the county being shorthanded as county workers are also wanting to have time with their families.

Commissioner Magness relayed Judge Moore’s Christmas Wishes for everyone and his regrets for not being at today’s meeting to voice those wishes in person. He then asked everyone to keep Judge Moore and his wife in prayer and concluded by thanking everyone for coming and wishing all a Merry Christmas.

My jacket, wallet and money were stolen by a TAPS employee, who was given the opportunity to commit this crime, due to the fact that another TAPS employee didn’t do their job of properly checking the bus after passengers departed. The TAPS employee, who had the responsibility of checking the bus, stated that she did indeed check the bus, but why, then, did she not see my jacket lying in my seat?

The Sherman Police stated that there was indeed a video tape from the bus showing another employee taking my jacket. BE AWARE: a video surveillance tape is not enough evidence to arrest this person! A member of management of TAPS told me that she would not release this person’s name, because he was an “employee.” Not long after this incident, he was fired for the theft; however, they would still not release his name! Approximately one month later,

a theft report was then sent to Grayson County’s District Attorney’s Office. The DA’s office told me that they couldn’t access the case by the police report number; I was told I have to have the person’s name, which the police can’t give me, because there was no arrest!

This is a vicious cycle!

Press Release - In all, 293 children received Christmas gifts from the Fannin County Children’s Center, thanks to a generous community and many hard-working volunteers and staff.

For the second year in a row, the Children’s Center created a pop-up store to serve the children served by CASA and the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Some CASA children were still served the traditional way. The pop-up store gave parents, caregivers or advocates an opportunity to select presents for their children. Each child got a book and either a coat, hoodie or pair of shoes. Each family got one family board game and plenty of wrapping paper. Caregivers were also able to select toys and other gifts using a point system.

Gifting The Cycle is a nonprofit that gives bicycles to children in the North Texas area. They gave 59 bicycles and helmets to the Children’s Center for Christmas presents.

REVEREND W.C. “BILL” BEASLEY December 28, 1922-December 17, 2021

Rev. W.C. Beasley finished his race in this life as we know it on December 17, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Rev. Beasley or as most people in the community referred to him “Brother Bill” held many titles during his 98 years of living. He was called husband, father, Grandfather, Officer, Patriot, Veteran, Friend, Pastor, Chaplain, Kiwanian, and author. A Celebration of his Life was held Wednesday December 22, 2021 at 1pm in the afternoon in the auditorium of First Baptist Church Bonham where he served as pastor for 17 years of his ministry. The Reverend Morgan Malone and Reverend Kenneth Ussery presided over the services under the Direction of Stephen Murden and Wise Funeral Home. There was a private family burial following the service at Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham. Pall Bearers for the Service included Phillip Holt, Paul Chandler, Dean Lackey, Sean Floyd, Scott Miller, Mark Posey all of Bonham. Levi Malone of Lake Dallas, Texas, and Stephen Dean of Gunter Texas. The Deacons of the First Baptist Church were Honorary Pallbearers.

Bill was born on December 28, 1922. He was looking forward to his 99th birthday however God had other plans. Bill’s 98 years of life would prove to be filled with rich experiences and adventures that would create the loving man our community has grown to know and love through the years.

“Brother Bill” was just like any 19-year-old young man growing up in a small southern town in Mississippi, much like Bonham, when his life was interrupted and would be forever changed by World War II. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1942 and took his training for his flight crew on a B-24 bomber. He was commissioned to service on March 18, 1944. His World War II combat assignment began in June 1944 with the 389th Bomb Group stationed at Hethel, England. His crew had 16 successful missions into enemy territory, however on the morning He was flying his 17th mission into Germany his plane was disabled by anti-aircraft on September 5, 1944 and he and his crew were forced to abandon the plane by parachute over Karlsruhe. He became, at that point a prisoner of war in Barth, Germany on Sept 5 and remained until May 14, 1945 when his camp Stalaag Luft 1 of 10,000 was liberated by Russian forces. He received the Purple Heart and Air Force medal with three oak leaf clusters meaning he received the medal three times and the Prisoner of War medal from President Harry S. Truman.

After military discharge, Bill would meet the love of his life Miss Sadie Norman on a trip into a small Mississippi town 45 miles from his hometown to thank a local physician who had provided care packages to him while overseas in prison camp. Miss Sadie was working there as he arrived it was love at first as Bill and Sadie would tell it and three months later, they were married.

You will find him giving credit to his service to our country with what he defines as a successful life after the war ended, confirming the critical statement “for God and country” and how powerful that influence can be to a young man or woman. Brother Bill attended East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas. While there, he was voted most likely to Succeed, and served as President of his Senior class. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from East Texas Baptist University and a Bachelor of Divinity from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1953.

Brother Bill would serve as pastor of 8 churches over his ministry to include: Victory Baptist church in Gilmer, Hepsibah Baptist Church in Leesburg, Texas, Newsome Baptist (Newsome, TX; New Hope Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Mart Texas, Emmanuel Baptist Church College Station, First Baptist Church Pittsburg, and First Baptist Church Bonham Texas. He served many churches post retirement as interim pastor helping them navigate through the process of finding their next pastor.

Brother Bill served as the minister of the First Baptist Church in Bonham, Texas from 1972-1988.

He devoted his life not only to serving that church family but became known as “the community pastor” due to his love, willingness, and devotion throughout the years to stand by and support families of this county in times of joy and tragedy.

He found himself at the end of his career starting a new chapter and served as Chaplain at the Sam Rayburn Memorial Veteran’s Center from 1988-2000. He felt as though God had allowed him to come full circle in ministering to veterans.

Most recently, he has had the privilege of writing a weekly column for the Fannin County Leader entitled, “From My Life to Yours” on its sixth year. It would be a new way to reach out to the community he held so dear. He was very grateful to the Fannin County Leader for the opportunity and the citizens for their support and interest.

He has completed a book of his memoirs of his prisoner of war experiences and his ministry of which the people of Fannin County play such a big part. It is entitled “From My Life to Yours…

My Story, Our Story, His Story.”

Bill was a member of the Kiwanis club was honored by them for 50 years of service to that organization. Bill also held the office of Chaplain of the Military Order of Purple Hearts Chapter 612 in Grayson in County. He was a part of many special ceremonies such as dedicating the Purple Heart Highway in Texas, a proud recipient of the HG Dulaney Award given by the Friends of Sam Rayburn in 2013, receiving the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Bonham Chamber of Commerce. Judge Spanky Carter also honored bill with a special day on his behalf for his 95th birthday in Fannin County.

Brother Bill has always said the greatest investment you can make in life is in people, it will yield the biggest return, he lived his life according to that daily. Bill was about loving people from all walks of life and had a way of making everyone feel very special. Being humble was his way of life.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie Norman Beasley, his daughter Betty Ruth Sorrels, and granddaughter Rhiannon Shea Sorrels. Also preceding him in death were his parents, Henry Carl Beasley, Lyda Mae Ashley Beasley, and Rosa Mae Beasley. He was also proceeded in death by a sister Milly Carson, and brother, Cecil Mckinnis, and a very special Aunt and Uncle Quinnie and George Castilow.

Bill is survived by one daughter Stephanie Strickland (Todd) and one grandson Reid of Bonham, Texas. He is survived by a sister Elaine Puckett from Clinton Mississippi, and a brother Donald Beasley (Pam) from Mobile, Alabama. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends who endeared him and will miss him greatly.

Brother Bill has fought the good fight and finished the race. I have no doubt that this child of God will hear well done, thy good and faithful servant, well done.

February 25, 1923 - December 13, 2021 Funeral services for Etta Kay Stringer were held at 2:00 pm on Friday, December 17, 2021, in the Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Honey Grove. Officiating was Reverend Tami Gallaway, Reverend Vivian Crowson and Mr. Steve Wright. Interment was at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Petty, Texas.

Etta Kay Stringer, of Petty Texas, passed away surrounded by her loving family on December 13, 2021 in Honey Grove Nursing Center.

Mrs. Stringer graduated from Honey Grove High School (1941) and East Texas State University (Texas A&M Commerce) with a Bachelor of Science (1945). She taught at several schools in Lampasas, Kamay and Wichita Falls, TX. She was active in the United Methodist Women’s Union. She was also a member of the Bertha Voyer Memorial Library, the Disabled American Veterans Organization, and the Red Hat Club.

Etta Kay is survived by her sons, John B. Stringer & wife Cherry Stringer of Nevada, Felix Ray Stringer & fiancé Teresa Garrett of Petty, Texas; her grandchildren, Joelle Lam of California, Karen StringerJohnson & husband Langston Johnson of California, John K. Stringer & wife Evelyn Stringer of California, Miranda Stringer of Texas, Reinart Yray of Nevada, Reigina Yray of Oregan; her great-grandchildren, Ethan Lam, Johnny K. Earl Jeffries of Leonard, Texas passed away on December 14, 2021 at the age of 86. He was born on August 26, 1935 to John Dunbar Jeffries and Flora Lee Hutchinson Jeffries in Columbia, Kentucky. Earl married Marie Mohler on June 10, 1955 in Alvin, Texas. Together, they shared 66 years of marriage.

Earl was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Local 100 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union.

Earl is survived by his wife, Marie Jeffries; son, Gary Jeffries with Louise Fabion, and her son Shane Shipley; youngest son, Christopher Jeffries and his spouse, Marcus Shetter; grandchildren, Melanie Dawson and husband, Brandon, Jarod Jeffries and wife, Alora; great-grandchild, Alex Fain; sister, Mildred Baker of Lake Jackson, Texas; and many nieces and nephews throughout Texas, Florida, Alabama and Kentucky.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Flora Jeffries; son, Michael Jeffries; brother, Dr. Bryan Royse; and sisters, Pansy McKinley, Evelyn Brockman, and Doris Knape.

Bobby passed away Sunday morning, December 19, 2021, at Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in McKinney, Texas.

Bobby was born on November 27, 2021, in Leonard, Texas, the son of Homer Davis Havens and Mary Evelyn Saye Havens.

He served in the United States Marine Corp from 1957-1959.

Bobby married Beverly Rose Gibbs on August 12, 1967, in Durant, Oklahoma. They were married for 54 years prior to his passing. Bobby was an avid hunter. He would often go deer hunting in Wyoming with his nephew. He enjoyed watching football, especially his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys.

Bobby worked for Teamsters Trucking and retired in 1998.

He will be greatly missed. Bobby is preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Ronda Marie Havens, Helen Regina Havens, and Debra Lynn Standifer; and sister, Cathy Margaret Hawkins.

Bobby leaves behind to cherish his memories his wife, Beverly Havens of McKinney, Texas; daughters, Dorothy Renee Havens of Lake Fork, Texas and Rebecca LaNell Morrison of McKinney, Texas; grandchildren, Karen Michelle McConnell, Mindy Holcomb, Wendy Holcomb, Bobby Jack Singleton, Ramon Carrasco, and Ethan Paul Spears; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of friends.

Melvin Eugene (Mel) Dunham Sr. (Retired USMC MGySgt.) passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 2021, with his wife Deanie of 42 years by his side, at TMC in Denison Tx. Mel was born in Ft. Worth Tx. on Nov. 17 1934 to Ernest Dunham Sr. and Auba Keeney Dunham, both of whom predeceased him.

Mel attended Amon Carter Riverside High School in Ft. Worth before joining the USMC in 1953. He retired after serving 24 12/28/21 years active duty having served time in Korea and three tours in Vietnam. He was on and traveled with the USMC Distinguished Rifle and Pistol Team.

IN 1977 he moved to Bonham to operate a family shoe store, The Shoetique. Following this he worked for VPG as a manager for 12 years. He served on the Board of the Bonham Golf and Country Club and later became a manager.

Active locally he served the Child Advocacy CASA of Fannin County, where he was awarded Advocate of the year several times. Mel enjoyed golf and bowling in his spare time.

Mel met his wife Deanie in 1978 and they enjoyed traveling in their camper with their four legged fur babies.

12/28/21 He was preceded in death by his parents, sons, David Dunham of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Henry Dunham of Bonham. Brother Ernest Dunham Jr. of Arlington and sisters Elizabeth Tucker of Emory and Dora Blaine of Cleburne.

Survivors include his wife Deanie, sons Melvin Dunham Jr and wife Zoe of Bedford, James Dunham and wife Kym of Henderson NV and Steven Dunham of Sun Prairie, WI. He leaves behind a sister Novie Cook of Grandview and a brother Mike Dunham of N. Richland Hills. He has five Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside military service will be held at Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham Tx. Dec. 28, 2021 at 2:00 pm.

OBITUARIES

Richard G. Mills, 63, of Bonham, passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2021 after a short battle with cancer. He was born in Pleasanton, California on March 2, 1958 to Lee Mills and Jane Mooney Mills. He was a “Jack of All Trades” and could do many things; if it was broken, he could fix it. Richard was an Auto Mechanic by trade; owned and operated a mechanic shop in Farmersville, Texas. He moved to Bonham, Texas in 2000 when he met Stacy Hamby; they married in 2003.

During the last 17 years, he built and owned and operated Mills Corner Garage in Bonham until he sold his shop and retired in January 2021.

His love of rebuilding and remodeling old cars took him to car shows where he won many 1st place awards and trophies. Richard was also an avid outdoorsman; he loved hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and skiing.

Pretty much anything outdoors was right up his alley. He kept himself busy with his many hobbies and never had an idle moment. Richard was a very loving, caring and compassionate father, husband, brother and friend who was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, Lee Mills, his grandmother, Lucielle Meyerpeter and father and mother-in-law, Glen and Norma Hamby. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Stacy Hamby Mills; children, Misty Mills McGuire of Greenville and Rachael Gibbs and husband, Cody Gibbs of Bonham; grandchildren, Brysin McGuire, Tanner McGuire and the soon to arrive, Colton Gibbs; his mother, Janet, 3 brothers, 3 sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard’s wishes were to be cremated and a celebration of his life held at a later date.

DODD CITY -- During the preseason, the Class 1A boys’ poll by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches deemed Dodd City’s Hornets worthy of ranking.

Senior quarterback DJ Brown won the offensive player of the year award and Brayden Harris claimed the defensive lineman superlative to lead Leonard’s AllDistrict 8-3A-II football honors for 2021.

It equated Brown’s fourthconsecutive year to win an all-district football offensive superlative award while playing for Leonard, which earned its 11th postseason trip in the last 13 years -- all with Shane Fletcher as head coach Brown, an NCAA Division-I Lehigh University football signee as a running back, finished his high school career with 6,654 rushing yards for Leonard, a 9-3 area finalist and the 4-2 third-place district postseason qualifier this season.

First-team selections from Leonard included: Cameron Armstrong, wide receiver; David Brooks, tight end; Dalton Doyle, center; Collin Mills, guard; Billy Watson, tackle; Justin Camp-

Wyatt Dolberry has continued his college basketball career into a third season at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

Through play on Dec. 19, the 2018 Bonham graduate had accumulated 81 points and 51 rebounds -- 37 of the boards occurring on the defensive end -- in 181 minutes off the bench.

On Nov. 21, Dolberry had season-highs in points (18) and field goals (7) and another three 3-pointers vs. the University of Maine-Fort Kent -- in 20 minutes.

Most recently, at Black Hills St., he totaled 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field including two 3-pointers in 21 minutes.

Dolberry returned to playing basketball last season after missing the 2019-20 campaign due to a back injury.

Before breaking for the holidays, district girls basketball had begun for Fannin County teams.

In 23-1A, Dodd City and Ector reached Christmas as the lone undefeated teams in the district at 3-0.

Despite graduation losses, the defending Class 1A State champion Lady Hornets have resumed their district domination -- again with a stifling defense. Through three games, Dodd City had allowed only 25 points -- including a shutout win.

Ector also had recorded three decisive district victories -winning by an average of 35.6 points.

consecutive postseason trip.

As non-district action concludes this month -- and most of 23-1A play awaits in the next two -- Dodd City has shown why -- already reaching double-digit wins and remaining ranked.

Junior Ashton Balvin, the 23-1A offensive superlative winner last season, and senior Gunnar Wilson, a first-team selection, return, as do

junior Aydan Balvin, a second-team selection, and sophomore Jaden Mahar, an honorable mention.

They head a roster of athletes -with successful efforts in other sports -- for first-year Dodd City head boys’ basketball coach Mike Scarbrough -- who previously won three State championships in four State appearances while at Nazareth.

It’s taken State caliber competition to stop the Hornets’ postseason runs in recent years, as area-round clashes with Slidell, the 2019 1A champion and finalists in the ensuing years, have cut short their advances.

Meanwhile, Bonham and Leonard in 11-3A play remained searching for its first district wins.

TCOG Announces Warming Up Texoma Drive Keeping Texomans Warm this Winter

SHERMAN, DECEMBER 22. 2021 - Cara Lavender, Aging Services Department Director of Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG) announced the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) Texoma, TCOG and Hot 107.3 have partnered together to present “Warming Up Texoma,” a drive for the Texoma region.

The distribution drive-through event will be held in the parking lot at TCOG on January 10, 2022. Distribution will begin at 12:00 pm and end at 2:00 pm.

“We encourage social service agencies who have needs for their clients to reach out to us with those needs so that we can

get items that will be of most use,” stated Lavender. Through the support of a grant from Simmons Bank, TCOG has purchased space heaters to be distributed to the community. “If you or your family are in need of a space heater this winter, please contact the ADRC at TCOG to be placed on our reservation list AAA has partnered with Hot 107.3 to promote the drive, encouraging community members and agencies to donate gently used or new “warming items” such as blankets, coats, hoodies, socks or small space heaters.

Items are needed for all ages and in all sizes.

United Healthcare has donated funds specifically for needed warmth items for those over the age of 60 in our community.

These items will also be distributed at the event through the AAA. Anyone wishing to donate items for this event should bring their donation to TCOG prior to January 7, 2022. Heaters will be handed out to those who have reserved one. Alternative arrangements may be made if you are unable to attend the scheduled drive-through event.
