Styles of chance that include numbers in a hat, dominoes, and cards in a deck, are used to determine a candidate’s position on electoral ballots.

This year, a deck of cards was used with the Ace card being the highest, the King being the next highest, descending downward to the 2 being the lowest card one could draw.

The ballot, in a Presidential election year, begins with the President race and all the candidates competing for that office listed, and then listed are the senate races, railroad commissioner, judicial races, and other state offices before listing the local county races being run in the counties across a state. Those national and state races candidates who did not make the Fannin County Republican Party Primary Election Ballot Draw, had their place on the ballot determined by Fannin County Republican Party Chair Precinct 11, Joyce Buchanan and Fannin County Republican Party Chair Precinct 19, Violet Spell, drawing for them. This year, though he may be leading in all the polls, Donald J. Trump’s “Jack” card, will find him placing fourth on the ballot to Ron DeSantis’ “Ace”, David Stuckenbergs’ “King”, and Nikki Haleys’ “Queen.”

To be named first among those competing for the same office has historically, in some cases, been an advantage.

Fannin County is growing significantly, as is interest in being part of the governance of the county. This year there will be nine county offices listed on the ballot with only two of those offices being uncontested (County Constable Pct 3 and County Tax Assessor Collector.) Three candidates will be competing for County Commissioner Pct 1; four are running for County Commissioner Pct 3; two for County Constable Pct 1; two for County Constable Pct 2, three for Sheriff; Continued on page 3

Fannin County 8/22/23Commissioners Court – Recognizing Citizenry Excellence 11/2/21 ber 2023 - County Treasurer: Mr. Woodson continued that interest on the TexPool account was $26,406.75 on a balance of $6,006,659.94; with interest on the 2022 Bond (Justice Center) coming in at $18,251.47 on a balance of $11,112,499.37; and the Operating Business money fund interest being at $159.58 on a balance of $130,466.19. 16. Approve leasing copiers and copier service through Datamax, Inc. and authorize County Judge to sign contract on behalf of the County – Purchasing Agent: Ms. Lane explained why changing the copier leasing service was being looked at and noted the proposal for service by Datamax could provide the county a savings of approximately $200 per month. She then introduced Business Process Consultant with Datamax, Damon Kilgo who along with Area Sales Rep Trey McFarlin, detailed their services outlined in the DIR contract (Tx Department of Information Resources) that included the leasing of the machines with a 4-hour service guarantee.

They noted the all-inclusive 5-year service plan includes maintenance parts, toner, staples, etc. with a local service tech available when service is needed. After the representatives answered questions from the court and established the reliability of their company (established in 1955), noted the county has the right to cancel at any time with a 30-day notice, and assured the court

they meet all Federal security requirements, a motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve item 16, table item 17 and authorize County Judge to negotiate and sign contract. The motion was seconded by Commissioner McQueen and passed.

18. Approve the lease of a bobtail truck and driver from Southern Seal Construction for small quantity rock deliveries to county road locations within Pre-

cinct 1; $95.00/hour including driver from fund 210-621-4600, Equipment Rental/Leases – Commissioner Precinct 1: Commissioner McQueen explained why this is needed and after some discussion a motion was made by Commissioner McQueen to approve with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed.

Tuesday 19, 2023, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham called to order at 9:00 a.m. the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. A Quorum was established with all County Commissioners and County Judge present.

The Invocation was led by Pastor Stuart Courtney of the Bethlehem Baptist Church of Bonham.

Pledges were led by Major James Manis, Retired.

4. Recognition of citizens

by Judge Cunningham for their outstanding citizenship and service to Fannin County – County Judge: Judge Cunningham noted there were many citizens who do a lot of good for the county and today he recognized two of those outstanding citizens. The first to be recognized for selfless service to the county was Malinda Allison-who serves without pay on the Board of the Hall-Voyer Foundation; is the President of the Honey Grove Investor Foundation; works with the Fannin County Museum; serves on the Fannin County Historical Commission; and is the secretary for the Lake Ralph Hall Zoning Commission.

Ms. Allison was presented with one of David Keene’s Bois d’ Arc Wood custom pens, a Plaque recognizing her outstanding citizenship and a “Fannin First” cap. Next to receive accolades for much-appreciated contributions to the county was Robert Fleckenstein who Judge Cunningham described as being very instrumental in assisting him in getting contractors who worked on the Courthouse, to repair their work that proved to be deficient to the point of the Courthouse being placed on a fire watch by the state. Mr. Fleckenstein, like Ms. Allison, also received a Bois d’ Arc pen, a Plaque, a “Fannin First” cap and a round of applause from all in attendance.

5. Introductions: Judge Cunningham recognized his wife who, though not a Federal or State agent; is “pretty official” and thanked her for her attendance.

6. Public Forum: A Bonham resident spoke to thank the court and all county employees for all they do and to wish them and theirs a Merry Christmas.

ROUTINE ITEMS: 7. EMS report for November 2023 – Scott Ridling, Fire Chief: Bonham Fire Chief Scott Ridling noted that last month was a relatively slow month with about 60 runs less than average. He advised his department took possession

recently of a new ambulance and are scheduled to receive another somewhere around July/August of 2024. He also stated there was a shortage of 2 staff members that he hopes to remedy soon noting that this Saturday the 23rd there will be a testing event for potential employees.

Approve payment of bills – County Auditor: Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple noted the bills were $140,542.47 after which Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve payment with Commissioner Kopf seconding the motion which passed.

9. Approve Auditor Monthly reports for November 2023 - County Auditor: Ms. Whipple advised the YTD revenue was $1,480,573.74; the expenses were $2,175,628.48 in the General fund. For the month of November, the revenue was $1,087,846.49 with the expenses at $1,190,689.33.

She explained that though there is a $102,842.84 showing to be in the red, and influx of tax revenue expected this time of year, will typically remediate any shortages. Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve the report with Commissioner McQueen seconding the motion which passed.

10. Approve Treasurer’s Financial Report for November 2023 - County Treasurer: Fannin County Treasurer David Woodson gave a report of revenue receipts in the amount of $1,829,546.38. He noted property taxes received for November was $998,227.19 and local sales taxes receipts were $159,915.43. A motion was made by Commissioner McQueen to approve the report with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed.

Discuss Courthouse display cases gifted to Fannin County – County Judge: Judge Cunningham expounded on how Melinda Allison was involved in the giftings of the display cases to the county by the City of Bonham Tourist Center while touching on the display of photographs of former Fannin County Judges with the first picture being from 1907 of the County Judge from that time having a similar name to his own.

He touched on his understanding of the standard business practice of the company doing a demolition getting the salvage and how that is worked in negotiations. He listed the current prices for copper, steel and scrap iron before noting the amount of those materials being taken from this project to be “de minimis.” He concluded by not-

ing demolition at the site will begin 1/2/2024.

County budget and revenue sources – County Judge: Judge Cunningham briefly commented on hotel taxes, an agreement with the City of Bonham regarding the Fannin County Multi-Purpose Complex, the possibility of placing some county owned land up for sale, adjusting recovery for inspection costs for developments, and looking for grant monies in the effort to minimize cost being placed on local tax-payers.

Paris District Road Report for week of Dec. 18, 2023 Paris -- Here’s a look at work planned in the district for the week starting Dec. 18, 2023. These schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment failure or other unforeseen issues.

Fannin County: The annual crack seal contract to place sealant in the pavement cracks on roadways in Fannin County has begun. The following roadways will receive a crack seal: FM 64 from SH 34 to the Delta County line; FM 151 from US 69 to the Grayson County line; FM 981 from US 69 to the Collin County line; SH 50 from Church Street to the Hunt County line; FM 904 from FM 64 to FM 1550; FM 274 from FM 898 to FM 1753; FM 1629 from SH 121 to SH 78; FM 87 from SH 56 to US 82; FM 273 from FM 1396 to FM 2029; FM 1753 from SH 78 to the Grayson County line. Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

SH 78, from US 82 to the Oklahoma State line. Watch for daytime shoulder closures and occasional lane closures as workers install sloped-end treatments on drainage structures and replace bridge rail and guardrail.

FM 100, from SH 56 to FM 2216. Watch for daytime lane closures as crews work to rehabilitate and widen the roadway. Motorists should expect delays as signals and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

FM 271, from SH 78 to FM 68. Watch for daytime lane closures as crews work to rehabilitate and widen the roadway. Motorists should expect delays as signals and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

CR 3210 at Bullard Creek. CR 3210 at Bullard Creek is closed to through traffic to allow for replacement of the bridge. During the closure, traffic is asked to use CR 3200 as a detour.

were alive. They seemed to always be on the table for special family gatherings.

CHEESE STRAWS 3/4 butter, softened 4 c. sharp cheddar cheese 2 c. all purpose flour 1/2 tsp. chili powder 1 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. ground red pepper In a large bowl cream butter and cheese. Stir in flour, salt and red pepper and chili powder. Make a ball with the dough and wrap in plastic wrap. Put in the refrigerator and let rest for 1 hour. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/2" in thickness. Cut into 2 inch strips or use a cookie press with a star tip. Place on a greased cookie sheet 1 1/2" apart. Bake 10-15 minutes until crisp in a 400 degree oven.

Randy Slaughter earned a first-team selection at wide receiver and cornerback to lead Leonard in the All-District 8-3A-II football awards for 2023.

Jacoby LaCook also garnered a first-team selection at quarterback for the Tigers (66, 2-3), who returned to the postseason with an area-round advance after a rare year absence as the district's thirdplace qualifier.

Just four days later, many of those same Warriors began what has already been a strong start to the school’s varsity boys’ basketball season.

With a 62-33 home non-district win on Dec. 15 over Prairiland, Honey Grove reached the start of 14-2A play with an 11-1 overall record, including a victory on Dec. 7 over Graford -- the defending Class 1A State champion -- during the North Hopkins Tournament.

The Warriors won the event on Dec. 9, after also winning the Prairiland Tournament on Dec. 2.

Road Work updates for Week ending 12/15/2023 As commissioner, I plan to let you know every week what we accomplished the week before in regards to our slogan “On the road to Recovery”. As citizens, you expect us to be out working daily in the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard.

Brush cutting was done on CR 1145 and 1146. We started on CR 1115 but the cutter is having an electrical connection issue that prevents optimum utilization. Thankfully, it is still under warranty but ACSO is a week behind in being able to service.

We have a new grader driver that will be

going to work on the roads in addition to all the other duties we perform. He was paired with our trainer for three days and is making excellent progress. The roads graded for the week were: 1015, 1130, 1205, 1265, 1300, 1305, 1320, 1400, 1415, 1420, 1421, 1435, 1050, 1535, 1555, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2200. We have one grader down due the hydraulic system working for everything except raising the blade.

Thanks for all your patience in working with us over the past three months. We received a card from the Ivanhoe post office thanking us for the condition of the roads as they drive them every single day. For all the mail carriers and bus drivers, we appreciate your service and dedication to your jobs and if you see and issue that we can correct please let us know.

“For the cabin. You know.

I’m going to put in a hot tub.”

“And you need a downspout for this?” Herb said.

“For the rain,” Steve said.

We looked at him.

“No water,” Steve said.

“You know, at the cabin.”

“Let’s see if I have this right,” Dud said. “You want to put a hot tub in at your cabin and you don’t have water.”

“Exactly.”

“So you need a downspout…?”

“For when it rains,” Steve said. “To fill the hot tub.”

“Okay. So how will you get it hot?”

“Going to wrap copper tubing around the stovepipe in the cabin, you see, and then send it on out to the hot tub.

The tub will be outside on the porch.”

“You don’t have a porch.”

“But I will by the time I get the hot tub built,” Steve explained. “I’ll bet that copper tubing will heat that water right up and then I can have a good soak up there any time I want.”

“Not quite,” said Doc. “Not the way I figure it.”

Steve looked at him. “Why not?”

“If the water comes down the downspout, around the stovepipe through the copper tubing and then outside to the hot tub, it looks to me like the only time you can soak in the tub is in a rainstorm.”

Steve thought about that for a minute. Then sipped his cold coffee. Loretta heated it up.

“And Steve,” said Doc, “you ever been on that mountain when the lightning’s popping? If you’re in that hot tub, with your moustache flopping around in the wind while you watch the

surrounding countryside explode, well …”

Steve wiped out what he was drawing with the pencil and started in on a fresh napkin.

He looked up after a few minutes. “Pool table,” he said.

It’s a good thing dreams are free.

Extra Mile When 91-year-old Betty Burk fell and broke her hip, femur and collarbone, she knew her recovery after surgery would be a difficult one. Fortunately, the Swing Bed Program at TMC Bonham Hospital helped her make the most of her rehabilitation.

Swing Bed, also referred to as skilled care, offers around-theclock care for patients transitioning between a hospital stay and discharge to home, allowing them extra time to rebuild their strength after an acute illness or injury.

Burk spent 30 days in the program and then continued her rehab journey in the outpatient therapy program at TMC Bonham Hospital. She credits her care providers for her progress. “I’m just thankful to be able to do what I can now,” she says. “It’s good that I can go shopping tomorrow!”

Researchers at the Texas A&M AgriLife Center for Grazinglands and Ranch Management are investigating the impact of grazing practices on the long-term sustainability and biodiversity of landscapes enrolled in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Conservation Reserve Program.

Supported by the USDA Farm Service Agency, the project will focus on adaptive grazing practices such as managed timing, intensity, frequency, duration and resting period.

About the Conservation Reserve Program “The Conservation Reserve Program continues to be one of the signature conservation efforts of the USDA,” said Jeff Goodwin, Ph.D., director of the Center for Grazinglands and Ranch Management, BryanCollege Station. “The effort has a 38-year legacy of successfully protecting the nation’s natural resources while providing significant economic and environmental benefits to rural communities across the U.S.” Established in 1985, the Conservation Reserve Program, or CRP as it is commonly known, is one of the nation’s largest privateland conservation programs with more than 23 million acres enrolled across the U.S. Through contracts varying in length from 10 to 15 years, voluntary participants agree to remove environmentally sensitive cropland from agricultural production and devote the land to the long-term conservation of grasslands, soil health, water quality and wildlife habitat.

In return, these landowners receive annual payments and cost share assistance to implement conservationbased management practices.

Texas’ enrolled landscapes In Texas, more than 90% of the roughly 2.7 million acres enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program are in the High Plains and Rolling

Plains ecological regions.

Due to this density of enrolled properties, Goodwin and research partners in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will focus their studies within these regions.

Collaborating researchers include Katie Lewis, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Research soil chemistry and fertility scientist and associate professor in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Lubbock, and Stephen Webb, Ph.D., Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute research assistant professor in the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Bryan-College Station.

Grazing exclusion and grassland trends Since its inception, the Conservation Reserve Program has excluded grazing on enrolled lands with certain exceptions for emergency drought and disaster events or biennial grazing regimes outside of the grassland bird nesting season. Producers who do graze at a reduced stocking rate during the primary nesting season generally receive a 25% reduction in their annual payment from the program.

Historically, grassland ecosystems were maintained by periodic disturbances in the form of fire and grazing ruminants such as bison.

Goodwin said the removal of these disturbances can lead to the proliferation of less-desirable vegetative communities.

Woody encroachment, land conversion, land fragmentation, invasive species and poor grazing practices have also contributed to the precipitous decline in native grassland health, as well as the avian species that depend on them.

“There is a common misconception that cattle production and conservation cannot coexist and have mutually exclusive goals,” Goodwin said. “But as the adage goes, ‘it’s not the cow; it’s the how.’”

Goodwin said an increasing amount of scientific research

suggests that by focusing on ecological principles, grazing animals become yet another tool in the toolbox to help conserve and manage wildlife habitat and other ecosystem processes.

Boots and hooves on the ground Specifically, researchers are seeking to answer three key questions related to lands enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program: Can adaptive grazing management provide greater ecosystem and climate change mitigation benefits than biannual grazing or grazing exclusion?

Are the conservation and ecosystem benefits of adaptive grazing management influenced by native versus introduced grass species?

Can grassland birds be used as an indicator metric for the health and function of Conservation Reserve Program lands in the Texas High Plains?

To find these answers, over the next five years researchers will employ and replicate a variety of land management treatments across 18 properties enrolled in the program. These different management treatments include grazing exclusion, as well as alternative year grazing and adaptive grazing management techniques.

This investigation will enable researchers to collect valuable data on soil organic carbon and microbial activity, vegetation composition and structure, plus the presence or absence of high-priority avian species.

“Information gained from this study will benefit a number of stakeholders by providing data-driven insights and scientific evidence to inform Conservation Reserve Program policy on the ecologic outcomes associated with the implementation of grazing management,” Goodwin said. “Ultimately, this study will continue to inform the scientific literature serving as a scientific basis of support for the conservation of working lands in the U.S.”

Texas Gained 12/21/21More People Than Any Other State In The Last Year

By William Melhado The Texas Tribune Texas’ population grew more than any other state in the country in the last year, by nearly half a million people, according to the recent estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. Of the 1.6 million people the nation gained between July 2022 and July 2023, nearly 30% are Texas residents.

The 473,453 people added to Texas’ population during that period, contributed to the state’s high growth rate of 1.6%, which was the third highest in the county behind South Carolina and Florida.

Due to Texas’ size — the second most populous state in the country — the high growth rate contributed to broader population increases in the South. Compared to other parts of the country, the South accounted for 87% of the U.S.’s 2023 growth. The majority of the South’s growth is due to net domestic migration, according to census estimates.

Net international migration to the region contributed nearly

500,000 people.

Kristie Wilder, a demographer with the Census Bureau, said in a Tuesday statement that the U.S. population growth stemmed from a decrease in deaths and migration returned to levels seen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Although births declined, this was tempered by the near 9% decrease in deaths.

Ultimately, fewer deaths paired with rebounding immigration resulted in the nation experiencing its largest population gain since 2018,” Wilder said.

BETTY JEAN LOSCHKE RYSER Betty Jean Loschke Ryser, 86 of the Allens Chapel Community passed away Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Baylor Scott and White Heart Hospital, Plano, Texas.

Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at St. James Lutheran Church with Pastor Art Farrow presiding. Burial followed at Vineyard Grove Cemetery in the Allens Chapel Community.

Pallbearers were Joe Brewer, James Brewer, Forrest Lane, Ty McKinney, Preston Cox, and Wayne Ryser. Honorary Pallbearers were Mario Carpio, Blaze Taylor, Lynn Jones, and Gordon Locke.

Betty was born December 30,1936, in Allens Chapel, to parents Alvin and Addie Loschke. She married Herman Carl Ryser, Jr. at the St. James Lutheran Church on January 31, 1959.

Betty was a lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church, where she served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Ladies Aide up until death. She graduated from Honey Grove High School in 1955 as Salutatorian of her class. She worked in Dallas, then was employed by Babcock and Wilcox in Paris, TX, until she married Carl. They began their married life in the Dallas area until 1971 when they moved back to the Honey Grove area to make their home in the Allens Chapel Community.

Betty was employed at the Honey Grove Signal-Citizen, typing copy for the newspaper until 1989 when she and Carl bought the business. They owned and operated the newspaper until March 1996, with Betty in charge of the newspaper portion of the business, the book work, and setting type for all the commercial printing work done in the print shop while Carl took care of the printing.

Betty was an active member in her community and in October 1992 she was elected as the Secretary for the Allens Chapel Vineyard Grove Cemetery Association where she served until October 2017.

Betty was a prolific scrapbooker and used her talents from her newspaper years to collect, type, and print the Allens Chapel Scrapbook. Through hers and many others efforts, a printed history of most of the families who had settled in the Allens Chapel Community since 1870 to 1997 was compiled.

Thanks to this monumental effort many family histories have been preserved for future generations.

For entertainment she enjoyed getting together with family or friends to play cards or dominoes.

She and Carl played Canasta weekly with neighbors for several years. When they moved back to Allens Chapel, the community had a Forty-two club which they became a part of. The couple learned Racehorse Rummy from out-of-town relatives and that became a favorite with the family, later they learned and played Hand and Foot with couples in the area. For the past several years a Friday night game of Hand and Foot was held at Betty’s house with family and friends. The newest game was Five Crowns played with family after our weekly Sunday lunch. Her house was always open to her family and friends. After retirement Betty’s hobbies became yard work and crocheting. When the weather permitted you could find her working or moving somewhere in her large yard. When indoors she loved crocheting lace tablecloths while watching T.V. Betty made around 15 tablecloths to give to family members as well as baby blankets for new arrivals that were cherished by all Betty was a selfless, frugal, charitable, woman with strong ethics and Christian values. She always saw the good in everyone and never spoke an unkind word. Her love of her family and friends was her greatest joy. Betty loved her church and community as much as her family. She became the matriarch of the extended family and carried on the tradition of Sunday family lunch started by her parents; this tradition will continue past her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband Carl, her parents, infant sister Dona, older sister Elwanda Owen, sisters-in-law’s Alene Reich and Katie Ryser, brothers-in-law’s Stan Owen, Jerry Brewer, Raymond Ryser, Edgar Ryser, Rev. Raymond Reich, two nieces Sharon Crow and Karla Ryser, as well as her nephew Phillip Reich.

She is survived by her daughters Debbie Weddle and husband Larry of Allens Chapel, Diann Lane and husband Brad of Allens Point, granddaughter Macalee Taylor and husband Blaze of Lubbock Texas, grandson Forrest Lane and wife Michelle of Allens Chapel, great-granddaughter Brynn Taylor and one great-grandson Ryser Taylor, sister Linda Brewer, nieces Carlon Carpio, Susan McDonald, Mary Ann Brownsberger, Cheryl Merriman, Janet Moerbe, Nancy Muecke, Karen Humphrey, and Tina Andrews. Nephews Steve Owen, Joe Brewer, James Brewer, Roger, David, and Glen Ryser, Jonathan Reich, Charles Carter and nephew-in-law Ronny Crow. Special great nieces Morgan Cox, Julia McKinney, Sara Carpio and several great nieces, great nephews, one great-great niece along with one great-great nephew.

JUDY ANDREW BAKER Judy Andrew Baker went peacefully to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 19,2023.

Judy is the daughter of Euclid Lee Andrew and Eula Mae Andrew. Judy was born February 9, 1945 in Allen’s Point Texas. Judy worked for several agencies in Fannin County including Farm Bureau, Fannin County Tax Assessor, Andrew Auto Sales then she retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Judy was very creative. She loved to paint, sew and take on DIY household projects. She could sew anything from baby clothes to mens suits and wedding dresses. She made the bridesmaid dresses for her granddaughters wedding and reconstructed a wedding dress for another granddaughter that her great aunt was married in. She could make just about anything.

While attending Windom High School Judy played basketball and was a force to be reckoned with. She was smart and able to excel in both sports and in academics. She had a sense of humor and was loved by all.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Ima Northcutt (late husband Jimmy) and her brother, Sidney Andrew.

Judy is survived by daughter, Sonya Duvall and husband Dale; daughter, Sissy Chaney and husband Michael ; daughter, Shelly Ritchson and husband Leon; grandchildren Mandy Jones and husband Chuck; Andrea McCraw and husband Bo; Chastiti Briggle and husband Jorry; Kara Willis and husband Jake; Autumn Harris and husband Justin; Misty Thomas and husband Troy; Justin Akers.

Judy is also survived by her brother Rusty Andrew (late wife Shirley); brother, Staley Andrew and wife Therma; sister in law Paulette Andrew along with several nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and a host of friends including Earl Baker.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thanks to her loving caregivers at North Star Ranch and Rehabilitation Center in Bonham. The love and care you provided for her gave us peace knowing she was loved and taken care of. The family would also like to express their appreciation to the employees of Heart 2 Heart Hospice for their kindness and consideration during this time.

OBITUARIES CONSTANCE (CONNIE) HESS PARKER Constance (Connie) Hess Parker, two weeks shy of her 89th birthday, of Ravenna, Texas passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on Friday, December 15th at home.

She was born December 27, 1934, to William Parmenter and Susan O’Donnell Hess in Clay Center, Kansas. Connie was the next to youngest of eight children. Connie is preceded in death by her mother and father, brothers Martin Hess, Harry Hess, and sisters Eleanor Hoesli, Alma Maga, Agnes Toone, Bernadine Baltis, and Betty Davis. She married Ira Cardell Parker, the son of Arthur and Mary Rimes Parker in Flossmoor, Illinois on August 17,1957.

She is survived by her son, John Lee Parker and wife Melinda Parker of Concord, Arkansas, four daughters, Mary P. Gibbs and husband Jimmy McGrew of Terrell, Texas, Suzanne Bennett and husband Galen Bennett of Ravenna, Texas, Eleanor Singleton and husband Les Singleton of Jacksboro, Texas, and Lee Anne Smith and husband Lewis Smith of Decatur, Texas, as well as ten wonderful grandchildren, Andrea Trout, Allison Gage, Austin Parker, Cassandra Bennett, Tamara Wood, Sarah Gibbs-Escobedo, Collin Singleton, Darcie Singleton, Travis Thomas, Paige Smith and four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Connie enjoyed entertaining her friends, dinner group, and large family gatherings. She loved gardening and planting flowers. She even found pulling weeds therapeutic. She was a long-time member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Dallas before moving to the Bonham area upon her retirement from EMC in 2000. As a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Bonham she was very active in the Ladies Guild and served on the church financial council. She was thrilled to travel the world with her sister Bernadine, her daughters and daughter in-law, fulfilling a long time wish to travel.

She will be missed by her family and friends for her quick wit, opinions, guidance, and love demonstrated through actions.

The celebration Mass for the life of Connie will be celebrated by Father Arturo Molina, her longtime friend and spiritual advisor, on January 6th at 11:00am at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 916 Maple Street, Bonham, Texas 75418. The visitation and rosary will be at 10:00am, prior to Mass at the church. A celebration of Connie’s life will be held at her home in Ravenna following Mass by her children for her friends.

Family interment will be held at a later date at Saint Peter and Saint Paul’s Catholic Cemetery in Clay Center, Kansas.

MARY L. TALLANT Mary L. Tallant passed away December 15, 2023 in Honey Grove, Texas at the age of 74. She was born to Richard Calvin and Elsie Louise (Conger) Sanders on August 23, 1949 in Compton, California.

Mary wed Calvin Tallant in Honey Grove, Texas on February 28, 1994. She attended Westside Baptist Church in Honey Grove.

RONNIE “BULL” KING

Ronnie “Bull” King passed away on December 14, 2023 with his loving family by his side. Arrangements are under the care of Wise Funeral Home.

Ronnie affectionately known as “Bull” was born on October 13, 1946 in Paris, TX to parents, Leon and Martha King. Ronnie was a very strong (hence the nickname Bull) and loving man. One of his most important goals in life was to protect and to care for his family. Bull was a very loving man and he never met a stranger. You could always find a smile on his face.

Bull was a simple man not much on words, and had a heart the size of Texas. He was loved by everyone that knew him. Bull loved to go hunting with his sons and grandson, especially hog hunting. He was an outdoorsman at heart and enjoyed watching and betting on the horse races. He was the best domino and poker player out there. Maybe dominos better than poker, but we wouldn’t tell him that. Bull taught his boys how to skin deer, work on vehicles (with a few different words not to repeat), and most of all how to be a dad. Becoming a grandpa (Papaw) was the highlight of his life. Bull enjoyed spending as much time as he could with his grandchildren and great grandson. It was a blessing to know Bull, and he truly will be missed by all who knew him. He always said God would handle it, not for anybody to worry.

Ronnie is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty King, Bonham, TX, sons, Jeff King and wife Tracy of Ravenna, TX, Joe King and wife Katina of Bonham, TX, grandson, Timothy ( TJ ) King and wife Kayla of Ravenna, TX, great grandson Karson King of Ravenna, TX, bonus sons (Big) Jeff Robison of Bonham, TX, Perry Peters and wife Jessica of Bells, TX, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Martha King, brothers, Benny, Frankie, Joe, and Bobby King, sister, Elizabeth Franklin, and granddaughter, Ashlynn King.

Veterans Land Board Retains Ownership of the Cemetery AUSTIN— Today, Texas Land Commissioner and Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham, M.D. announced that the Killeen City Council voted 6-0 for the City of Killeen to enter into a contractual agreement with the VLB regarding daily operations of the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. The VLB still owns and oversees the cemetery and will provide the city with the funding for all salaries, employee benefits, and daily operating supplies. The same National Cemetery Administration (NCA) standards that apply to all four Texas State Veterans Cemeteries will remain in place.

“Providing the highest quality of care and service to our Veterans and their families during times of loss and grief is one of my top priorities as VLB Chairwoman as well as an American and Texan,” said Commissioner Buckingham.

“Working together, the City of

Killeen, the VLB and the GLO will be able to support the needs of Texas Veterans, their families and the incredible cemetery staff whose hard work keep our Texas State Veteran Cemeteries pristine.”

The temporary staff at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery will now be City of Killeen employees with full benefits. This will allow the VLB’s invaluable staff to not simply have jobs with salaries, but careers with upward progression potential.

The VLB has found that paying city employee salaries, benefits, daily operating supplies, and indirect costs saves 30% over using Temp agency personnel at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. The VLB has similar arrangements with Abilene, Corpus Christi and Mission and plans to have an interlocal agreement in place with Lubbock when that cemetery opens.

With this arrangement, the City of Killeen has become a member of an exclusive group of cities and counties

that support our Veterans and their families during one of the most difficult times of their lives. By creating this working agreement, VLB cemeteries experience increased community engagement and attendance at ceremonies and events.

The VLB is extremely proud of its employees and awardwinning cemetery. Recently, the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery received a 99.03% customer satisfaction score and a national Operational Excellence award during a recent Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) inspection.

This incredible accomplishment would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the cemetery staff, and the VLB will continue to champion their expanding careers. Together, the VLB and the City of Killeen will continue to uphold the highest VA standards as we serve our Veterans and their families.

Bonham-Dr. Price Bradshaw, Jr. age 79 of Bonham, TX was born on March 9, 1944 in Beaumont, Texas to Price Bradshaw, Sr. and Tillie Bertha (Ojeman) Bradshaw. He passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at Baylor Scott and White Heart Hospital Select Specialty Care Unit in Plano.

Price married Margaret Ann (Ford) Bradshaw on February 24, 1968 in Beaumont, TX. Dr. Bradshaw received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lamar University. Master of Arts Degree from the University of Houston, and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of Florida. He worked for Texas Instruments and Raytheon in the defense industry writing equipment manuals. He was a loving husband and father.

Price is survived by his wife Margaret Bradshaw of Bonham, TX and son, Dr. Price Bradshaw, III, MD and wife Christy of Charleston, WV. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Frances Barclay.

Celebration of Life will be at 11:00 am on January 4, 2024 at First Congregational Church 1113 W 13th Street Bonham, TX 75418. Bro. Mark Posey will preside.

A lite lunch will be held at the church following the celebration of life.

Determining To Be The Good Ground

Jesus, the master teacher, taught many parables.

In the parable of the sower he explained the different kinds of soils or hearts. Let us consider the good soil.

Matthew, Mark, and Luke record the ‘parable of the sower’(Matthew 13; Mark 4; Luke 8). The Good Soil is rich toward God, plowed deeply, rocks and thorns are removed.

Every farmer recognizes the great value of preparing the ground before the seed is planted.

Jesus said the good soil is “an honest and good heart” (Luke 8:15). Christians are to “provide things honest in the sight of all men” and “in all things willing to live honestly”

(Romans 12:17; Hebrews 13:18).

The Lord said that the good soil “heareth the word” (Matthew 13:23). Paul wrote that “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).

Christ said that the good soil “understandeth the word” (Matthew 13:23). God’s word is understood by the superior attention given to the word, not because of a naturally great mind or higher intellect.

Paul stated that “when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ” (Ephesians 3:4).

The Son of God said that good soil “receives the word” (Mark 4:20). Luke recorded that “when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of

God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women” (Acts 8:12). The scriptures must be received “as it is in truth, the word of God” (1 Thessalonians 2:13). The scriptures must be “searched daily” (Acts 17:11).

The word “is able to save your souls” (James 1:21).

The Savior said that the good soil “keeps the word” (Luke 8:15). We are to have patience.

Christians must bear patiently under the trials of life. Paul reminds us “not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9).

The good soil is different than the other soils. The good soil alone is pleasing to God. In this new year, I challenge each of us to be the BEST soil that we can be.

“By Grace, Through Faith”

Hello everyone!

The Bible tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

This is the only way that we can receive the gift of salvation through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We must understand that it is not through our good works that we have done. Jesus tells us in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” What a powerful message this is! As I have said before, the gift of salvation is the greatest gift that we could ever receive

in our lives. We, as a nation, have lost our dependency on the Lord to help us in our times of need. He is willing and able to help us, but we must put our faith and trust in Him. As I have said before, one thing that I love about doing my research for these articles, is coming across so many wonderful hymns that I have never heard before.

Horatius Bonar (1808-1889) wrote this one in 1864. The message in this hymn comes from Ephesians 2:8-9.

“Not what these hands have done can save this guilty soul; not what this toiling flesh has borne can make my spirit whole.

Not what I feel or do can give me peace with God;

not all my prayers and sighs and tears can bear my awful load.” “Thy work alone, O Christ, can ease this weight of sin; Thy blood alone, O Lamb of God, can give me peace within.

Thy love to me, O God, not mine, O Lord, to Thee, can rid me of the dark unrest, and set my spirit free.”

Have you ever been physical ill due to stress? We can call it anxiety or tension and no matter what you call it we have all experienced that sinking feeling in our stomachs. In the Bible, Job went through several degrees of stress and yet God eased his suffering. Good news! The Bible has many helpful scriptures for dealing with stress.

Isaiah 40:30,31 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Romans 16:20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Philippians 4:6,7 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and

supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Psalms 55:22 Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.

Proverbs 16:3 Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established.

U.S. Ag Exports Forecast Down, Imports Up For 2024

By Emmy Powell Communications Specialist The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) latest trade outlook forecasts fewer exports and more imports in 2024.

The forecast for U.S. agricultural exports in fiscal year 2024 is down $9.2 billion from the 2023 fiscal year to $169.5 billion.

“For this year, 2023, agricultural exports have come in at about $179 billion and imports at about 195 billion. So, we’re seeing an increase in imports, a bit of a decrease in exports from a year ago when we were about $190 billion,” David Salmonsen, American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) senior Government Affairs director, said. “And for next year, that will widen a little bit, and we’ll be down a little bit more on exports and a further increase in imports.”

The report reflects increased expectations for imports, increasing the negative balance to $30.5 billion.

The falling value of feed, grain, beef, poultry, pork and

dairy products led USDA to lower the forecast for the value of exports.

U.S. grain and feed exports are expected to drop to $37.5 billion for 2024 due to reduced expectations for wheat and corn trade. Wheat trade contributed to an $800 million decrease, while corn exports were forecast $500 million lower at $12.8 billion.

Demand from China, the largest foreign market for U.S. exports, is expected to decrease in 2024. “[In] 2023, our agricultural exports to our number one destination, which is China, were right about $34 billion, and their forecast for next year at

$29.5 billion,” Salmonsen said. “Mexico and Canada will pretty much stay the same—Mexico with $28 billion, Canada $27 billion.

A little bit of a decrease in Japan from $12 billion down to $11.5 billion. The European Union, roughly the same, right around the $12 billion mark, and the same with South Korea.”

USDA’s forecast of $29.5 billion would be the lowest level of U.S. ag exports to China since 2020.

Several agricultural organizations, including AFBF, sent a letter to President Joe Biden supporting measures that will improve trade.

The warden informed him that the bird was an American kestrel, a protected bird of prey, and is not allowed to be hunted or harvested. The warden checked the other hunters in the group and discussed the issues around peppering, ensuring their shotgun pellets did not cross property lines. A citation was issued for harvesting a protected species. The case and civil restitution are pending.

Caught on Camera In September, a Tyler County game warden received information on individuals potentially participating in road hunting. The warden worked with a landowner setting up surveillance cameras in their field. Not long after he set up the monitoring system, he observed a slow-moving vehicle spotlighting and headed towards his location.
