Paris District Road Report for week of Dec. 4, 2023 Paris -- Here’s a look at work planned in the district for the week starting Dec. 4, 2023. These schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment failure or other unforeseen issues. Motorists are advised to remain alert and pay special attention to all signs, barricades and traffic controls, and reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems.

Fannin County: The annual crack seal contract to place sealant in the pavement cracks on roadways in Fannin County has begun. The following roadways will receive a crack seal: FM 64 from SH 34 to the Delta County line; FM 151 from US 69 to the Grayson County line; FM 981 from US 69 to the Collin County line; SH 50 from Church Street to the Hunt County line; FM 904 from FM 64 to FM 1550; FM 274 from FM 898 to FM 1753; FM 1629 from SH 121 to SH 78; FM 87 from SH 56 to US 82; FM 273 from FM 1396 to FM 2029; FM 1753 from SH 78 to the Grayson County line. Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

SH 78, from US 82 to the Oklahoma State line. Watch for daytime shoulder closures and occasional lane closures as workers install sloped-end treatments on drainage structures and replace bridge rail and guardrail.

FM 100, from SH 56 to FM 2216. Watch for daytime lane closures as crews work to rehabilitate and widen the roadway. Motorists should expect delays as signals and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

FM 271, from SH 78 to FM 68. Watch for daytime lane closures as crews work to rehabilitate and widen the roadway. Motorists should expect delays as signals and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

CR 3210 at Bullard Creek. CR 3210 at Bullard Creek is closed to through traffic to allow for replacement of the bridge. During the closure, traffic is asked to use CR 3200 as a detour.

SH 34, from FM 64 to FM 1550. Watch for traffic shifts and traffic-signal-controlled lane closures as workers build the bridge approaches for the new SH 34 roadway at the future Lake Ralph Hall.

FM 1550, from SH 34 to CR 3544. Watch for daytime lane closures as crews work on building the connection of the realigned FM 1550 to the existing roadway.

Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

FM 2554, from FM 273 to CR 2125. Watch for daytime lane closures as maintenance crews perform edge repairs on the roadway. Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

Mabel Adams was sitting in the day room at the Rest of Your Life retirement home when the children came in.

She smiled and so did all the others in the room except for two who didn’t know what was going on.

The old-timers in the home knew the kids were coming and had put up Christmas decorations around in the day room and on the doors of their own small apartments and on themselves. Mabel had been reminded several times by the staff that morning that the kids

were coming over, this being necessary as Mabel’s memory isn’t what it used to be. And she put a sprig of imitation holly in her hair and tied a red ribbon on the other side.

The little girl smiled and walked over to Mabel.

“Are you a grandma?” she asked.

“Why, yes dear, I am.”

“I brought you a present, Grandma,” she said, handing a box to Mabel. Mabel opened it and was delighted at the sandalwood-scented hankies inside.

CONTEST WINNING CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE COOKIES 2 c. semisweet chocolate chips, divided 4 oz. unsweetened chocolate, chopped ⅓ c. butter, cubed 1 c. sugar 3 large eggs 1½ tsp. vanilla ½ c. all purpose flour 2 Tbsp. baking cocoa ¼ tsp. baking powder ¼ tsp. salt confectioner's sugar In a microwave, melt 1 c. chocolate chips, unsweetened chocolate and butter; stir until smooth. Cool 10 minutes.

In a large bowl, beat sugar and eggs, 2 minutes, beat in chocolate mixture and vanilla.

In another bowl, whisk flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt; gradually beat into chocolate mixture. Stir in remaining chocolate chips,. Refrigerate, covered, until firm enough to handle, at least 3 hours. Preheat oven to 350° with lightly floured hands, shape dough into 1" balls; place 2" apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake until lightly puffed and set, 1012 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool. Dust with confectioner's sugar and serve.

Fannin County Commissioners Court – Development Update 9/26/23

Tuesday, December 5, 2023, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham called to order at 8:52 a.m., a Special Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. He noted Quorum established with himself and all County Commissioners present except for Commissioner Self who was not in attendance due to illness.

2. Hear comments regarding a Change in Zoning application from A&R Agriculture and Ranching District and RE, Rural Estate Single-Family District to PD, Planned Development; 1.5 acres of ID# 80149 and 4.5 acres of Property ID# 132714 to allow for Boat and Recreational Vehicle storage: Fannin County Development Services Director Di Hopkins, spoke to expound on this and to advise that all requirements for its approval had been met.

She stated there was one letter of protest that was received but noted the Bois d’ Arc Planning & Zoning Committee had recommended this request be approved. There were no other speakers.

3. Hear comments regarding a Special Exception application to reduce the road frontage requirement on the cul-de-sacs and curved roads from 100 feet to no less than 60 feet for the proposed Five Points development in Windom on East FM 1396; reduction for 27 of the 97 proposed lots in a gated community on 149.17 acres: Ms. Hopkins explained why the developer was requesting this and noted all requirements for its approval had been met, there were no letters of protest, before she confirmed the BPZ Committee recommended its approval. There were no other speakers.

4. Adjourn: Meeting adjourned at 8:57 a.m.

On the same day at 9:00 a.m., Judge Cunningham called to order the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. After Judge Cunningham noted Quorum established, Pastor Dana Coker of the First United Methodist Church in Bonham, led the Invocation. The Pledges were led by Attorney Andy Garner of the District Attorney’s Office.

4. Introductions: Judge Cunningham welcomed Wolfe City’s Assistant Fire Department Chief Aaron Deary to the court.

5. Public Forum: There were no speakers.

ROUTINE ITEMS: 6. Approve payment of bills – County Auditor: Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple noted the amount needing to be paid was $380,578.53.

Commissioner Magness then made the motion to approve payment with Commissioner McQueen seconding the mo-

tion which passed.

Approve minutes from 11/21/2023 (R) and 11/28/2023 (R) – County Clerk: Commissioner Kopf called the court’s attention to an error existing on 11/21, item #8. He noted it should state Precinct 4 instead of Precinct 3 then proceeded to make the motion to approve the minutes with the correction made to item 8. Commissioner Magness seconded the motion which passed.

DISCUSSION, CONSIDERATION AND ACTION ITEMS: 8. Approval of County Judge to investigate and begin negotiations for an Interlocal Mutual Aid Agreement between Wolfe City Fire Rescue and Fannin County – County Judge: Judge Cunningham would first offer his commendations to Fannin County Emergency Coordinator Troy Hudson and all the law enforcement members whose diligence and coordination resulted in the recent capture of two escapees from the Fannin County Jail. He then compared the cooperation that was implemented in

that endeavor with the kind of cooperation he would like to see occur with local fire departments. A discussion ensued with Assistant Fire Chief Deary and the court, regarding an agreement to enhance the level of dispatch cooperation between Wolfe City Fire Rescue and Fannin County Fire Departments (specifically the Ladonia Fire Department) for those remote areas that would benefit from that coordination.

9. Approval of proposed additional reimbursable service fees by Eikon of up to $7,400.00 for additional drainage design scope of work – County Judge: Eikons Consulting Group Senior Architectural Designer Curtis Nelson and Director of Architecture Maurice Thames spoke to explain the need for this and expound on additional services that were not listed on the agenda that would raise the amount needed approved.

After an in-depth discussion on the specificities of the matter where it was determined another $2,300 needed to be added to the amount requested, Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve up to

Approval of proposed additional reimbursable service fees by Eikon of up to $29,886.00 for observation and testing by Geotex Engineering at the future Fannin County Justice Center – County Judge: Mr. Nelson and Mr. Thames continued the discussion explaining that this portion had to do with the design meeting up with existing energy codes and noted that though approval for this amount was being requested, they did not believe that the full amount would be needed.

More discussion ensued regarding the impending demolition work at the future Justice Center site before Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve the $29,886.00 with Commissioner McQueen seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

11. Approval to purchase an AT&T First Net cell phone for Emergency Management – County Judge: After Troy Hudson expounded on the need for this, a discussion

followed regarding its cost.

Before a motion was made, citizen Jannie 7/3/18 Bellows spoke on dead zones existing in the county that possibly justified the need for this service. After Judge Cunningham suggested more research was probably needed, a motion was made

by Commissioner Magness to pass on this for now with Commissioner McQueen seconding the motion which passed.

My philosophy to serving you as Precinct One Commissioner My goals as your commissioner of Precinct One center around the Four C’s of public service: Commitment, Cooperation, Curiosity, and Courage. We all want what is best for our precinct and county and to make that a reality requires our commitment to these four principles.

Commitment: the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause. Determining what will work best to bring our roads back to an acceptable state or what we can do as a county to improve our finances and quality of life within our means requires taking the time to research solutions on our own and not just take the latest sales pitch from someone who says they can solve our problems for us. I consistently research every topic on our agendas each week and usually have notes that I have gleaned from other sources to make a decision. I will call anyone who I think could help in the decision process and have had some really good help from TXDOT about how to improve our county roads.

Cooperation: the process of working together to the same end. As individuals, we all have different priorities and goals but as part of a voting group we are only one of many. We need to work together to create a policy or budget that will satisfy the majority of the voting members going forward and benefit our constituents in the best way. In some cases though, this is not possible and if we firmly believe that the direction is wrong we can always vote against the item. Contrary to what people may think, one person cannot hold the rest of the voting members hostage unless they get their way. While the phrase go along to get along is frequently used by voting groups to promote harmony, this should never be why an individual forfeits their right to vote their conscience.

Curiosity: a strong desire to know or learn something. What can we do to improve on where we are now? This should always be a question that we have whether it involves how we can improve our county roads or how Fannin County can best serve it citizens.

While new is not always better we need to be aware of what is out there and the results that have been achieved. We also need to talk with others who are using what we might be considering. I personally spent weeks talking to others who are using the CAT Graderbit2 system and the results they have seen with it. Knowledge is always evolving on a subject matter and unless we are curious about it we can easily become trapped in the past and doing things that have been shown to be detrimental to the outcome we may want.

Courage: the ability to do something that frightens one. While it sounds easy, the ability to stand up and vote your conscience in front of a group or tell a constituent that you will not be able to fix their problems can be hard to do sometimes. One of the first things I was accused of after being appointed as a commissioner was that I was just a typical politician: makes promises and doesn’t follow through with them. My position from day one has been I will not make you any promise except to do the job to the best of my ability and make sure our team is out every day working on the roads in some capacity. In regards to decisions for the county, if I vote against the majority you will always know why I opposed the action.

I believe in working in your best interests every day and hiring people who have the same philosophy and are willing to work daily to advance our precinct and county. As citizens, you should have noticed that we are out every day and slowly making progress on our county road problems. This is a long term project as it took many years to get to the poor condition many of the county roads are in now. Some projects that I would like to see done by the county are the Justice Center and selling some excess property the county owns.

14. Approval of Interlocal Agreement between Fannin County and the City of Bonham related to development and implementation of regulations in Extraterritorial Jurisdictions (ETJ) – County Judge: This item was passed on.

15. Approval of Interlocal Agreement between Fannin County and the City of Leonard related to development and implementation of regulations in Extraterritorial Jurisdictions (ETJ) – County Judge: This item was passed on.

16. Approval of allowing a group of volunteers to apply for grants through TxDOT to replace road signs and traffic control marker throughout Precinct 1 – Commissioner Precinct 1: Citizen Patricia Wolf explained hers and a group of volunteers’ mission, to document signage that is needed on the roads & highways in Precinct 1. She detailed her knowledge of applying for grant monies and her willingness to do so on a strictly volunteer basis to not only benefit Precinct 1 but the other precincts as well. Citizen Mitchell Smith asked to speak and first noted he could not hear the speaker well before asking why this should be approved just for Precinct 1 when all the precincts could benefit from grant monies. After more discussion where Ms. Wolf noted Precinct 1 could be the starting point in a potentially larger project, a motion was made by Commissioner McQueen to approve the request with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed.

17. Approval of updated Fannin County Subdivision Regulations – County Judge: Di Hopkins summarized changes made to the manual that is available on the county’s website for those wishing to know more about it. A discussion ensued with comments from Citizen Mike Netjek and the court on the matter of the county being required to take over the maintenance of roads. After concerns were addressed, a motion was made

by Commissioner Magness to approve the updated regulations with Commissioner Kopf seconding the motion which passed.

18. Approval of appointment and removal of nominees to the Fannin County Subdivision Committee – Commissioner Precinct 2: Di Hopkins noted the two candidates who volunteered to replace outgoing Attorney Matt Simpson of Cole Title from the Committee was Senior Escrow Officer of Main Street Title Deana Staton and Manager of SW Fannin SUD John Keen.

Judge Cunningham noted the two volunteers were suggested by the Committee and asked for a motion. Commissioner McQueen made the motion to appoint Deana Staton with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

19. Approval of adoption of Trails of Trenton subdivision roads located on High-

way 151 in Trenton that were previously accepted by the County on 10-18-2022 – Commissioner Precinct 2: This was passed on.

Courthouse repairs County Judge: Judge Cunningham commented on additional wiring work needed before the fire watch can be terminated before noting additional woodwork would be done after Christmas and commenting on the additional elevation issue in the basement possibly costing $20,000+ to repair in the days ahead.

Judge Cunningham thanked everyone for their attendance before noting the importance of discussion, transparency and good development during a period of change. He voiced his hope that everyone stays well and wished God’s blessing on all.

Micah Wommack earned recognition on each side of the ball and Colton Gray garnered a superlative to lead Trenton in the District 6-2A-I football awards for 2023.

Wommack received a first-team selection at quarterback and second-team spot at free safety, after Trenton (4-7, 1-4) this season made its fourth postseason and bidistrict advance in the last five years.

Gray earned the Utility Player of the Year in

6-2A-I from which the Tigers advanced as the fourth-place qualifier.

Other first-team recipients included Jayden Candela at running back and Carson Beegle as an offensive lineman.

Second-team selections were Braden Boone as an offensive lineman and Devada Flowers as a linebacker.

by Rich Hilliard LEONARD -District 11-3A girls' basketball will commence on Dec. 12 with Leonard already on the verge of surpassing last season's overall win total.

The Lady Tigers started the first full week of December at 10-5 overall, following last season's 12-win effort.

Leonard won the Bland Tournament on Nov. 18, as Parker Evans claimed the girls' event's most valuable player award and Cheyanne Clark and Olivia Pye garnered spots on its all-tournament team.

The success should give the Lady Tigers confidence, as they compete in 11-3A -- where Bells, Gunter, Howe and Pottsboro (listed intentionally alphabetically)

have been favored for trips to the playoffs in pre-district picks by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and the district prediction in this year's edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Basketball -- and vie for their first postseason since 2020.

Leonard will play host to Bonham on Dec. 12 to start 11-3A action.

Road Work updates for Week ending 12/01/2023 As commissioner, I plan to let you know every week what we accomplished the week before in regards to our slogan "On the road to Recovery". As citizens, you expect us to be out working daily in the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard.

We are having a 90 day update on where we are for precinct one on December 16, 2023 at 8:30 a.m. at the Fannin County Multipurpose Complex. This is not a political event, only a chance to see

what has been done by the team and the volunteer group.

We will outline our plan going forward also.

For the week ending December 1, 2023 the team was able to grade the following county roads: 1155, 2015, 4025, 4027, 4055, 4060, 4065, 4070, 4075, 4110, 4115, 4300, 4305, 4309, 4310, and 4315. Pot holes on CR 1035 and 1105 were worked on. Some of the areas on these two roads cannot be fixed with just filling potholes as the underlying bases have been destroyed. While we could put down a layer of oil sand to smooth them back out,

this is only a very short term, costly solution. Our team has been patching potholes in oil sand roads that were just put down earlier in the year. The drainage issues have to be corrected first no matter what option we might choose to fix the roads.

We did not get here in a day, week, or even year and it will take a dedicated team of employee's like we have currently time to correct the issues.

By Mark-k Wilson An enthralled group of Kiwanians and guests listened as Bois d’Arc authority and artist, spoke on the history of Bois d’Arc. John Baecht is a Bois d’Arc artist and displayed some of his work including ax handles, bows, dragonfly, and conceptional art.

Bois d’Arc grows naturally in our area. Most Bois d’Arc in other locations comes from around here.

From his grandfather, Baecht at an early age learned about Bois d’Arc

and began making ax handles and handles for other tools. Baecht explained how spokes of the wagon wheels were made of Bois d’Arc. Baecht’s Dragonfly is truly a work of art. Baecht studies a piece of Bois d’Arc and gets the feel of the wood and the shape. He then conceives from the shape how the piece will work best. Baecht is working with some very old tools, as many tools made today are not strong enough for Bois d’Arc.

Press Release - Local convenience store chain, TXB, in partnership with sister company McCraw Oil, has donated $24,000 to Fannin County Childrens Center as a result of its 27th annual Doyce Taylor Memorial Golf & Fishing Tournament fundraiser earlier this year.

Also, in partnership with ExxonMobil's Education Alliance Grant Program, TXB and McCraw Oil and Propane awarded $500 each to LH Rather Jr High, Finley-Oates Elementary, IW Evans, and Bonham High School.

Bonham- “Paulin Lee Skinner, age 77, of Lamasco, TX, was born on November 12, 1946, in Denison, TX, to Perry “Pete” Paulin Skinner and Mary Jo (Walton) Skinner Bishop. Lee went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 4, 2023.

Lee married Jeannie Kaye (Carpenter) Skinner on April 9, 1966, in Lamasco, TX. Not only was he a loving husband, brother, father, pawpaw, uncle, and man of the Lord but also a true friend to all those that knew him. He will be greatly missed by many, as he never met a stranger. He loved everyone like family and was well known to all as pawpaw.

Lee was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and served overseas in Vietnam. Lee owned and operated Bonham

Jewelers alongside Kaye for 36 years before retiring. He held many positions over his 30-plus years as Master mason with the Masonic Lodge.

There was something special about Lee. He was a big’in darlin’. He could light up a dark room, smelt like a sweet cigar, and loved his family and Jesus. He taught us all how to raise a lil’ hell, how to love unconditionally, but most importantly, showed us how to praise Jesus. Lee had a huge heart and an even bigger impact on many around him. He was one of a kind.

Lee is survived by his wife Kaye Skinner, daughters Shanna Reynolds, and husband Mike and Heather Sapaugh and husband Brian; grandchildren Baleigh Reynolds-Rollins & Lucas, Elijah Reynolds & Tori and Montana Reynolds & Micha Jo; greatgrandchild Elizabeth Reynolds; brothers Bill Skinner and Mike Skinner & wife Gladys, and numerous extended family members and friends.

The void is large that Lee leaves with us, but we find comfort and rejoice knowing Lee is reunited with our Savior, pain-free, and reunited with many family members and friends that have preceded him.

At Lee’s request — No formal visitation was held. Graveside services were held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Lamasco Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Mike Skinner, Billy Joe Skinner, Mike Reynolds, Brian Sapaugh, Montana Reynolds, Eli Reynolds, Lucas Rollins, Trent Christian, and Kirk Christian.

WILMA DARWIN Bonham-Wilma Darwin, age 93, of Bonham, TX was born on April 5, 1930 in Fannin County Texas to William and Della (Price) Carlile.

She passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Texoma Medical Center in Bonham, Texas.

Wilma married Carl Daniel Darwin on December 12, 1952 in Bonham, TX; he preceded her in death on May 11, 2016. She worked for VPG and later worked for Super Sack before retiring. Wilma was a loving wife, mother grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She attended Central Baptist Church and later attended Fannin Bible Baptist Church.

Wilma is survived by her granddaughter, Tina Paxton of Sherman, TX; great grandchildren, Daniel Lindsey, Bianca Lindsey, and Kaylynn Paxton; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Carl, she is preceded in death by her parents William and Della Carlile and siblings, Orville Buddy Joe Carlile, Nona Bailey, and Loyd Lee Carlile.

Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham, TX. Funeral services were held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 8, 2023 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham, TX. Pastor Lee Jackson officiated. Interment followed at Willow Wild Cemetery, family and friends served as pallbearers.

DONNA MCSHELL SMITH Donna McShell Smith entered Heaven on November 28, 2023 in Denison, TX. She was born May 14, 1956 in Amarillo, TX to Richard Louis Elliott Sr. and Charlie Mae Pointer Elliott.

Donna moved to Bonham, TX at the young age of twelve following the death of her mother, where she would reside until God called her home. At the age of seventeen Donna married Hollis Wayne McFail and to that union her only daughter was born, Tamika (Mika) McFail.

Donna later married David Leon Smith Sr. and their union spanned 32 years. In that thirty-two years they were blessed with two healthy sons, David Jr. (Bo) and Dravion (Dra) Smith. Donna was devoted to her family. She cherished her children the most in the world. Donna loved her family and friends, and never met a stranger. To know Donna was to love her. Her love for life and happiness will always remain in the hearts of her family. Donna had several hobbies that she enjoyed. She loved playing softball (co-ed), watching her boys play sports, shopping, red lipstick, and getting her nails done. Donna worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shied/Trailblazer, as a claim examiner, for 36 years. She then went on to work for the Fannin County Detention Center for 10 years as a jailer. Donna was contemplating retirement before taking ill in March 2023. Donna was a true fighter and fought until the very end. She went to Glory with her family by her side.

Donna is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Charlie Mae Elliott, brothers, Richard Louis Elliott Jr. and John Charles Elliott.

She leaves behind many to cherish her memory, daughter, Tamika McFail, sons, David (Bo) Smith and Dravion (Dra) Smith, sister, Mildred Dickerson (Don), brothers, Alvis Dunlap (Sonya), Marcus Dunlap (Jacque), Melvin Dunlap (Kim), Donald Dunlap (Karen), Kevin Elliott (Stormy) 4 grandchildren, Sh’Torian (Tori) McFail, Quintraveon (Tra) Minter, Zariya Green, and Zae’Leigh Smith, grand puppy, Arlo, great grandchildren, Peyce Harris, and Cymphani Minter, and special friend, Don Brown.

Services were held December 9, 2023 at 1:00pm at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Bonham, TX. Burial followed at Fannin Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Tony Perry, Jay Burton, Fran Brown, Brennan Thomas, Deshawn Elliott, Kevin Elliott, Honorary Pallbearers were Nigel Palmer and Damien Stewart.

DOROTHY INEZ HARRIS Bonham-Dorothy Inez Harris, age 94, of Bonham, TX was born on February 26, 1929 in Ely, Texas to John and Gertie Harris.

She passed away on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Stonebrook Assisted Living Center in Denison, Texas.

Dorothy Harris married Clyde Ray Lankford on May 31, 1947; he preceded her in death on January 22, 1994. On February 7, 1997 she married Bobbie Joe Harris in Savoy, Texas; he preceded her in death on November 3, 2020. Dorothy was a graduate of Bonham High School and worked as a cashier for Kroger’s where she retired. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Dorothy attended First Baptist Church in Bonham and was formerly a longtime member of Savoy First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son Donnie Lankford and wife Sandra of Ector, TX; son-in-law Gary Hance of Durant, OK; grandchildren Mike Hance and wife Kristi, Stacey Rainwater and husband Todd, Lori Casstevens and husband Nathan, Jared Lankford and wife Lauren, Kassie Reinecker and husband Brent, and Kayla Bohannon and husband Derek; 16 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, sister Thelma Estes and husband Jimmy of McKinney, TX; in addition to numerous extended family members and friends.

She is also preceded in death by both her parents, John and Gertie Harris, son Steve Lankford, daughter Clydette Hance, and siblings Jean Magness, Mattie Magness, Reba Fox, John Harris, and Wanda Boothe.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 pm on Monday, December 4, 2023 at Forest Grove Cemetery in Telephone, Texas. Pastor Landon Heinen officiated. Serving as pallbearers were Michael Hance Jared Lankford, Todd Rainwater, Nathan Casstevens, Jacob Hance, Jordan Hance, Colby Casstevens, and Parker Casstevens.

The family would like to thank the staff of Wesley House (formerly The Woodmoore Assisted Living), Stonebrook Memory Care, and Dignity Hospice for the care they provided.

Debbie obtained her cosmetology license right after high school, and held numerous occupations from waitressing, making wafers at MEMC, placing decals on gas pumps at Schlumberger, and bookkeeping at various locations including Bonham Cable, Keeton Land Co., Hardy Farms, and ultimately McCraw Materials where she was still employed.

Debbie was known by many for her good southern cooking; and her last dishes were the dressing, deviled eggs, and ham at Thanksgiving this year. She was also known for opening her home to everyone.

Debbie was a published poet and song writer, releasing one song to SONIC Records which her daughter Amy recorded the 2001 vocals. Her biggest accomplishment was being called “Mimi/Meme”. Debbie loved online shopping, going out to eat and being with family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.

Debbie is survived by her husband of 31 years, J.R. Rhodes; son Chris Jackson and wife Shannon, daughter Amy Dutrow and husband Nick; stepson Justin Rhodes and wife Megan; grandchildren Aubrey Carpenter, Kayla Bower, Gage Jackson, Dylan Bower, Ally Dutrow, Wyatt Dutrow, Lynleigh Dutrow, Katie Dutrow, Ben Fleming, Joseph Rhodes, Eli Rhodes, and Nicholas Rhodes; great grandchildren Rowdy Beggs, Cora Beggs, and Sadie Beggs; mother Martha McCallum, brother Skip McCallum and wife Raegan, Carl McCallum, and Scott McCallum; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her grandpa Carl Samuel Hooper “Jack”, grandma Carrie Dee Hooper “Tootsie”, grandma Effie Bell McCallum, Grandpa Leon McCallum Sr., grandson Clayton Jim Jackson, sister-in-law Rhonda McCallum, second cousin Matthew Paul Lehew, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation was held Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at CooperSorrells Funeral Home Bonham, TX from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

The funeral service was held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham, Texas. Pastor Dennis Troutz officiated. Interment followed at Willow Wild Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Stevie Peek, Nick Dutrow, Dylan Bower, Gage Jackson, Carl McCallum, and Chris Jackson. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Justin Rhodes, Scott McCallum, and Curtis Payne. .

OBITUARIES

(Ashcraft) Cain. He passed away on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, TX. Elton attended Logan High School, started rodeo, and participated in Saddle Bronc riding and Bull dogging around the United States. In 1960, Elton started bullfighting at PRCA and amateur rodeos. During this time, Elton met Paula in Tucucari, New Mexico.

They married on September 14, 1964, and started living together in New Mexico. Elton cowboyed for local ranchers in the area. They traveled farther East to Dalhart, TX. Elton continued cowboying for ranches in the community. This is where Paula gave birth to their only child, Twister. The family’s next home was Amarillo, TX, where they opened a Boot Shop. In 1990, they moved to the family Ranch in Ivanhoe, TX. Elton continued the family ranch and opened the Saddle Shop in Bonham where he worked for 30 years before retiring. Elton enjoyed helping kids learn to rope and bulldog in his arena at the ranch, where he spent many hours at night. Elton’s most significant contribution to rodeo was the Junior World Team roping that Paula and Elton took over in 1990-2017. This roping occurred in Amarillo, Edin-OK, then Durant, OK. Elton’s latest adventure was the Car lot that he opened in 2020.

Elton was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be dearly missed.

Elton is survived by his wife Paula Cain of Ivanhoe, TX; son Twister Cain and wife Tessa of Gonzales, TX; grandson True Cain.

He is preceded in death by his parents George and Sarah Cain.

A visitation will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham, TX from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

ROBERT “BOB” ELVA FOREMAN Robert “Bob” Elva Foreman passed away on December 2, 2023 surrounded by his loving wife and four legged companions.

Born on February 6, 1946 the son of Bob Elva Foreman Sr. and Evelyn “Toots” Foreman in Shelby, Ohio.

Bob excelled in sports all throughout high school. He went on and joined the United States Army and proudly served his country in Vietnam. Service was at the heart of Bob and before moving to Texas he was a police officer and prison guard.

He also worked at the Denton State school, MHMR before starting his own business. With encouragement and a dream he opened Lone Star Lawn & Landscaping and Heavenly Roots Garden Center in Sanger, TX. During this time he also started an after school youth ministry called “Coaches Kids”. Bob’s true passion was taking in rescue dogs and in 1993 he founded an animal rescue. Throughout the years he has rescued and adopted out 100’s of dogs, and donkeys as well. Bob loved God, family, country, the outdoors, fishing, horses and his biggest love of course was his dogs!

Bob enjoyed sharing stories and making conversation with everyone he came in contact with. He was an active church member and enjoyed the few times he had the opportunity to preach. He loved debating biblical issues. His health would not allow him to attend church anymore but he was a proud member of Bois D’Arc Creek Cowboy Church. His wife would bring home the recorded sermon for him to listen to and he always inquired about the current happenings. It was important for Bob to be a part of a loving church family.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Evelyn Foreman, brothers, Ken Foreman, Don Foreman, brother in law, Gene Terheggen, sister in law, Ann Lee, and best friends, James Edens, Horace Trietsch and Thomas Trietsch.

Those left to cherish his memory, wife of 33 years, Carol Terheggen Foreman, daughters, Shelly (Barry) MacKenzie, Toni (Chad) Bailey, Nikki Foreman (Ron Morrison) stepson, Brian Null, sisters, Sandra Sharpe, Patty Fultz (Ron), brothers, Richard (Lynne) Foreman, Ron (Sandy) Foreman, son in law, Mike (Gail Lynn Casey), brothers in law, Mark Terheggen, David (Margo) Terheggen, John (Tess) Terheggen, Joe (Julie) Terheggen, sisters in law, Mary Alger, Doris (Ken) Mathews, Susan (Fred) Smith, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Norman C. Huey, age 84, of Bonham ascended to his eternal home on NORMAN C. HUEY Friday, December 1 at Texoma Medical Center following an extended illness.

Norman Clifford Huey was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, on November 28, 1939, to the union of Jake and Alice Huey. He attended Booker T. Washington School in Bonham. He attended Prairie View A&M. He left Prairie View A&M due to his grandmother’s death. He had many jobs and finally started work at the General Cable, where he retired.

He will be remembered for fishing; he loved to cook and made the best chili and stew. He often talked about the two subjects people should avoid – God and politics. He believed what he believed, and he stood firm on his beliefs. He loved his children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. He married Altrice Leftrick and to this union three children were born.

He leaves to mourn three daughters: Angela Frazier, Annette Wilson (Bobby), and Tiffany Mathenia, all from Bonham. There are six grandchildren: Daniel Wilson (Kazuyo) of Sapporo, Japan, Carlton Wilson of Bonham, Evan Wilson of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Christopher Wilson, Jake (BJ) Mathenia, and Cullen Frazier of Bonham. He has three great-grandchildren: Leah Wilson, Kash McGowan, and Kaiden Mathenia. He has one sister, Dorothy Huey Harrison, Stockton, California, and sister-in-law, Jennifer Harvey, Houston, Texas. He has a host of nieces and nephews.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and brother, Clinnon Harvey.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, December 6th at 1:00 PM in Gates Hill Cemetery-Bonham. Burial followed immediately after services.

Oakwood Cemetery (Honey Grove) News for October and November

Press Release - Red Poinsettias were placed in the PVC pipes on over 600 veterans’ graves. This was the first year there were enough for all the veterans. Thank you to everyone who donated the stems and to those who put them out. In the north end of the cemetery lives at least one squirrel that loves these poinsettias.

When Sandy saw the squirrel with red in his mouth headed for a tree, she scared him, and he dropped it. That squirrel is staying busy due to the poinsettias!

There is a grassy weed trying to take over the cemetery. Called King Ranch bluestem, and introduced in Texas a hundred years ago to control erosion, it was for

some time quite popular among ranchers and the Texas Highway Department. This is a very invasive, non-native weed which is very hard to kill. The tough stems stick straight up, growing one to two feet tall.

Mowing can be done, and in two or three days’ time, the cemetery looks as if it had never been mowed because KR bluestem can grow that much in one week’s time.

And this is a very sly weed. Mowing too often causes it to shift its growth parallel to the ground, and it will then spread by rhizome rather than seed. KR bluestem has been called “the weed that consumed Texas,” so please be patient as we learn how to effectively deal with it.

Disaster Strikes

Six high school boys and I started clearing the snow off an abandoned World War II aircraft hangar that was 55 feet high, 150 feet wide and 200 feet long.

It was to be disassembled and moved 150 miles to Fairbanks, Alaska to be used for recreation.

Snow hid large holes in the roof.

"Doug's screams ripped our hearts out. They ricocheted off the hangar's beams, and escaped out the snowy tarmac to be lost in the Alaska wilderness. They were the most terrifying sounds I've ever heard. He'd fallen through a

hole and his shoe was caught in a brace 12 feet below."

"Someone hold my ankles lower me down!" Barney did, and the others lowered us.

Doug said, "Hurry coach, my shoe's coming off!"

Coach needs one foot! "His shoe slipped off, and he fell six inches before I grabbed his ankle."

Thirty years later, I went back to Fairbanks. A man said, "Do you know who I am?"

"No." "You grabbed my ankle."

"Doug!"

The Cross Of Christ Is The Triumph Over Death

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ When Christ died, he put to an end to the fear of death for all who “die in the Lord” (Revelations. 14:13). Paul, in his letter to Timothy, said that Christ “abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10). Some 750 years before the cross of Jesus, Isaiah proclaimed of Christ, “He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it” (Isaiah 25:8).

The Death of Christ, the Burial of Christ, and the Resurrection of Christ is the GOSPEL.

(1 Corinthians 15:1-4). “The gospel of Christ:…is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth” (Romans 1:16),.

Under the “law of Christ,” we see that “salvation which is IN Christ Jesus” (Galatians 6:2; 2 Timothy 2:10). This is why Jesus said to Martha, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth IN me shall never die.

Believest thou this?” (John 11:25-26). The Bible teaches us the way to get INTO Christ is through baptism. Paul reminds the Christians in Galatia, “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3:27). Again Paul wrote that Christians have been “buried

with him(Christ) by baptism into death” (Romans 6:4).

Paul wrote of the coming of Christ, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead IN Christ shall rise first” (1 Thessalonians 4:16). Again, Paul wrote to Christians of the coming of the Lord, “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed” (1 Corinthians 15:52).

Only through the cross of Christ can we triumph over death. Let us be obedient to the Bible to get INTO Christ and then, let us live and die in Christ for the resurrection.

The Bible tells us in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

As I’ve said before, the gift of salvation is the most precious gift that we could ever receive in our lives.

Why anyone would not want to accept this gift is beyond me. God gave us His only Son so that we could have eternal life through Him. He wants you to realize how much He loves you, and wants you to accept this gift

Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself.

By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. Include and make time for GOD this Sunday

of salvation. If you haven’t accepted it, I pray that today will be the day that you do. It will be the best decision that you will ever make in your life!

In 1896, H. Ernest Nichol (1862-1926) penned a classic hymn that commands us to tell the story of Jesus Christ, and the gift of salvation.

“We’ve a story to tell to the nations, that shall turn their hearts to the right, a story of truth and mercy, a story of peace and light, a story of peace and light.

We’ve a message to give to the nations, that the Lord who reigneth above has sent us His Son to save

us, and show us that God is love, and show us that God is love. For the darkness shall turn to dawning, and the dawning to noonday bright, and Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth, the kingdom of love and light.”

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5, 2023 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has launched an online application for Direct Loan customers. More than 26,000 customers who submit a Direct Loan application each year can now use an online, interactive, guided application that is paperless and provides helpful features including an electronic signature option, the ability to attach supporting documents such as tax returns, complete a balance sheet and build a farm operating plan. This tool is part of a broader effort by USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) to streamline its processes, improve customer service, and expand credit access.

“The Biden-Harris Administration is working hard to make it easier for farmers and

ranchers to get the loans they need to keep growing food, fiber, and fuel for our country,” said Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small. “Online services are commonplace in commercial lending, and with USDA Farm Service Agency’s new online loan application feature, it is now easier for producers to get the financing they need to start, expand, or maintain their farming and ranching operations.”

The online farm loan application replicates the support an applicant would receive when completing a loan application in person with an FSA Farm Loan Officer, while continuing to provide customers with oneon-one assistance as needed.

Through a personalized dashboard, borrowers can track the progress of their loan application. It can be accessed on farmers.gov or by completing FSA’s Loan Assistance Tool at farmers.gov/loan-assistancetool. To use the online loan application tool, producers must establish a USDA customer account and a USDA Level 2 eAuthentication (“eAuth”) account or a Login.gov account.

For the initial stage, the online application tool is only available for producers who will be, or are currently, operating their farm as an individual. FSA is expanding the tools availability to married couples applying jointly and other legal entities in 2024.

FSA has a significant initiative underway to streamline and automate Farm Loan Program customer-facing business processes. FSA continues to accept and review individual requests for assistance from qualifying borrowers who took certain extraordinary measures to avoid delinquency on their direct FSA loans or those who were unable to make a recent installment or are unable to make their next scheduled installment for installments through January 15, 2024.

The Inflation Reduction Act, a historic, once-in-ageneration investment and opportunity for agricultural communities, provided $3.1 billion for USDA to provide relief for distressed borrowers with certain FSA direct and guaranteed loans and to expedite assistance for those whose agricultural operations are at financial risk. Dec. 5, 2023 AUSTIN— Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will no longer pursue acquisition of the property previously occupied by Fairfield Lake State Park, now owned by FLG Owner, LLC. “TPWD recognizes the importance of conserving our state’s natural resources and providing recreational opportunities for Texans,” said TPWD Executive Director David Yoskowitz, Ph.D. “However, TPWD must also responsibly manage the state’s fiscal resources in order to maximize the benefit of our parks for all Texans.

The citizens of Texas have always shown strong support for expanded access to state parks, and I believe there is a promising future for outdoor recreation in our great state.”

Suspending jerkbaits are good in 5-7 feet of water on points or outside of deeper weed lines. Viper XP Jigs are good on the edge of channels near or on big wood in 5-8 feet of water.

Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 62 degrees; 3.29 feet below pool. Some bass are suspended at the dam in 15-20 feet of water. Catching the occasional fish on a squarebill crankbait on boat ramps. Jigs and creature baits, working well on concrete and rock in deeper locations.

Ray Roberts GOOD. Water normal stain; 55 degrees; 1.74 feet below pool. Consistent weather has made for a steady pattern.

Sand bass are good with many limits caught off the bottom in 40 feet of water with slabs with a hair jig as trailer. Blue catfish are mixed in. Catfish are good in 40 feet of water with cut chicken, cut shad and even on the slabs when targeting sandies. Bass are fair with shallow water crankbaits near rocks, or a dropshot on deeper points. Kicking off family Christmas with the perfect tree

Texas Crop and Weather Report – AgriLife Today Texas Christmas tree production continues to hold strong despite impacts from extreme drought, according to a Texas A&M Forest Service expert.

Fred Raley, Ph.D., Texas A&M Forest Service tree improvement coordinator, said he is expecting another year of high demand for Christmas trees.

Texas Christmas tree production and prices “Christmas trees are usually planted through November and March, the trees being sold for this year’s holiday season were actually planted four years ago to reach the mature height of 6 to 8 feet,” said Stan

Reed, executive secretary for the Texas Christmas Trees Growers Association.

Like many other crops this year, producers who were not able to adequately irrigate their Christmas trees saw that some of their crop struggled, but not enough to decline production.

“Although we went through extreme drought, we aren’t expecting a shortage in Christmas trees,” Raley said.

“The trees that will struggle most are the trees producers

import from the Pacific Northwest.”

Prices may vary depending on the size and variety of tree your family chooses.

“The Virginia pine trees are expected to be priced near last year’s tree prices,” said Reed. “We should only see an increase in precut trees being imported.”

Rocky Smith, owner of Holiday Acres Christmas Tree Farm in Manvel, said his customers will have 1012 acres to go through while searching for their perfect tree.

“Each year we open our farm the weekend after Thanksgiving,” Smith said.

“We had an amazing turnout with nice weather, and prices are exactly the same as last

year.”

Christmas tree demand “Since 2020, people have been searching for opportunities to get out of the house and create memories with their family,” Raley said. “Producers have taken this opportunity and turned their normal choose-and-cut operation into a fun family event.”

Turning this tradition into a fun family event has caused the demand for live Christmas trees to be high each year.

“Since we are expecting another year of high demand for live Christmas trees, make sure you purchase yours early to secure the perfect tree,” Raley said.

Producers are expecting a good sale season for trees.

“After a fantastic opening weekend, we are excited to see how the rest of the holiday plays out with our wonderful customers,” Smith said.

CENTRAL Sporadic rainfall brought needed relief to some areas and helped wheat and oats. Regions that did not receive rain started to notice the negative effect on small grains. Temperatures fluctuated at the beginning of the week, but the warmer start provided good growing conditions.

Colder temperatures started to set in towards the end of the week. Warm-season pastures were rapidly declining due to shorter days and cooler temperatures. Common winter broadleaf weeds were being observed and flourishing.

Winter pasture for grazing was doing well. Most small grains had been planted. Winter cereal acreage was less than expected.

Field work for other crops was being conducted ahead of the predicted rainfall. Hessian fly larvae were found in early planted fields and remain a concern moving forward in an isolated area. Many producers supplemented livestock with hay. Cattle remained in good body condition.

NORTH Topsoil and subsoil were reported as predominantly adequate to short in all counties.

Pasture and rangelands were fair across all counties.

Overnight temperatures were below freezing, with warmer temperatures during the day.

Some areas received small amounts of rain. Winter pastures looked good, and additional rain was ideal for plantings that had emerged.

Livestock were doing well and continue to graze when weather permitted. There were no disease or insect outbreaks reported.
