Fannin County — Origin: In June of 2020 in the parking lot of Bethlehem Baptist Church of Bonham, Texas the faith community, citizens of Fannin County gathered for a peaceful protest to stand against racial injustice, police brutality and to advocate unity in the community. Participants marched with members of local law enforcement and concluded the march across from Bonham Police Department.

The gathering included speeches of unity from city leaders, a proclamation from the city of Bonham, and inspiring words from concerned citizens.

Closing remarks included a commitment to follow up meetings which resulted in the formation of Our Community Matters Council.

I never share in a Veteran’s Day observance that I don’t remember the four men on our crew that lost their lives in the fiery crash of our plane while doing combat duty on September 5, 1944. They paid the ultimate price. One

of them was my roommate in the barracks and my very best military friend.

Others on our crew were captured. I for one spent nine months as a prisoner of war. My personal thanks again America for not forgetting where we were and that we were yours.

Seventy-six years have passed since we sang with joy “ Don’t Fence Me In”.

With my restored freedom America has provided me

The courtroom on the second floor of the5/7/19 newly renovated courthouse would be the logical best use of that space. Trials and daily dockets in the District Court find many individuals in the district courtroom every day.

The gallery space above, on the third floor which looks down into the courtroom, is the perfect arrangement for high profile cases and jury trials. And yet apparently the Commissioners never considered for the District Court to be the logical Best Use of this space. And finally, let’s not forget that the entire courthouse—with only 17 county personnel— will have to be fully heated and cooled during working hours. Again, is this a responsible use of resources to provide that kind of electrical/utility services to such a small proportion of County services?

What type of facility Fannin County builds will reflect the pride and prosperity of Fannin County’s future?

Will it be the skimpy metal building the prior Commissioners’ Court tried? Where will it be located? We need to think further than whose name will be included on the cornerstone of the restored courthouse. Leadership is

Fannin County Commissioners Meet: Courthouse Renovation/Future Justice Center 6/30/20 10/20/20 10/29/19 and Bois d’Arc Lake Zoning Commission Vacancy Discussed

By Tim Meek The Fannin County Commissioners met on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at 9:00 for a regular meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Cindy Baker Burnett, pastor at Main Street Presbyterian Church in Honey Grove opened with an invocation and pledges were led by Major James Manis.

Quorum was established with all Commissioners present.

No citizens spoke during the public hearing however Judge Moore read a letter from Allen Sanderson, a member of the facilities committee appointed by the court to look at what departments will be located in the courthouse, facilities needed, facilities available for future growth of the county.

Mr. Sanderson’s letter was in regard to the Courthouse restoration project and the need for a permanent solution for a new Justice Center and the possible location. He supports the center to be located at the west corner of Main and Fifth Streets. He specified in his letter that “locating the facility at this location would complete the square and would be another major economic impact on the downtown area.

If it is the decision of the court that building a justice center in the downtown area is not feasible, the next location that should be considered is the location of Highway 78 and US 82, the old Brookshire’s and Wal-Mart location. This location has great visibility, convenience, adequate parking and room for expansion when needed. One idea would be renovating the existing buildings. The other alternative would be to purchase the property and demolish the current buildings and build a new facility. Both alternatives should be considered with cost breakdowns for both.

To build a new facility is the direction that I would explore.

Renovating that structure after completion it would still look like a shopping center in layout and function and always be associated with the old Brookshire’s and WalMart.” As to the financing of a new Justice Center Mr. Sanderson wrote: “In today’s economic environment and with historical low rates, this is the time we should act rates

will never be lower. Also, the money saved on current leases will go far in servicing the debt to construct the facility.” Our county has and will continue see growth and development.

Just drive around and look. I tell people that in 10 years we will not recognize many parts of our county. With growth and development our tax base will also grow and will meet our financial obligations without a major tax increase.

Judge Moore expressed his appreciation for the letter from Mr. Sanderson. #6 Discussion, consideration and action regarding the Fannin County Declaration of Disaster Proclamation for Covid-19: As of the meeting time there were 798 cases, 758 recovered, 20 fatalities and 28 active cases in Fannin County. Of the active cases, 4 were in the prison. Judge Moore reminded everyone to “protect yourself “ and noted that the survivability rate has improved. Motion made to extend one week, Motion seconded and passed. #7 Discussion, consideration and action regarding the Covid-19 Response and Continuity of Operations Plan for Fannin County.

Recommendation that the travel restriction be removed was the only change. Motion and second, motion passed. #8 Discussion and presentation regarding Bois d’Arc Lake Construction: This item was passed due to the absence of Steve Long of NTMWD. #9 Discussion, consideration and action to approve minutes from 10/13/2020 : Motion was made and passed. #10 Discussion and update regarding Courthouse Restoration: Judge Moore

reported that all the plaster has been removed from the walls, large holes are being patched, plumbing is being installed as well as air handling units. #11 Discussion and report regarding monies collected by the Fannin County District Clerk’s Office for September 2020 No questions from Commissioners. #12 Discussion, consideration and action to allow a Precinct to return to installing culverts – Commissioner Precinct 3: Commissioner Magness requested that his Precinct (3) be allowed to return to installing culverts, he does not like the way some of the culverts are being installed by contractors and his constituents are not satisfied with the new installation rules.

The agenda item failed for lack of a second.

#13 Discussion, consideration and action to approve Resolution relating to establishing the County’s intention to reimburse itself for the prior lawful expenditure of funds from the proceeds of tax-exempt obligations to be issued by the County for authorized purposes; authorizing other matters incident and related thereto; and providing an effective date : Motion made, seconded, motion passed. #14 Discussion, consideration and action to replace Bob McCraw of the Bois d’Arc Lake Zoning Commission: Newt Cunningham was the recommended replacement however the Commissioners requested that more candidates be available to select from.

The item was postponed for 2 weeks. #15 Discussion,

consideration and action regarding personnel or supplies for Covid-19 from the CARES Act Grant or other funding : A request for balance authorized by the CARES Act. will be made with the approval

of the Commissioners. Motion made and approved. #16 Discussion, consideration and action to approve payment of bills : Motion made and approved.

Fannin County Judge Randy Moore opened the Special Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court Thursday, Nov. 5th at 10:31 a.m. A quorum was established as all Commissioners and Judge Moore was present.

There were no speakers today for public forum. #3 Discussion, consideration and action regarding floor plan and office spaces for the Fannin County Courthouse: Judge Moore asked Michelle Case to bring to the front, blow up posters of floor plan drawings.

He addressed questions regarding the third floor that had been previously asked about the layout & location of the County Treasurer’s office, the Auditor’s office and where the assistants and the purchasing agent would be.

The Judge asked for comments or questions regarding changes that had been made to the original floor plan. There was a suggestion made that the office workers be asked for their input and Judge Moore responded that everyone working there had already been asked those questions

and they had no issue with the changes taking place.

A discussion ensued with Michelle & Alicia Whipple, regarding the location of various office equipment.

The next floor plan to be discussed was the ground floor plans. Michelle explained that change suggestions had been made to make room for a Veteran’s Service office, but those changes would adversely affect the space for the Justice of the Peace office.

She further added that it was suggested that the Justice of the Peace would be better located in The Justice Center.

After Judge Moore asked for thoughts on the matter, a discussion ensued that did not result in any decisions regarding the ground floor plans. He feels a visit to the building site to see the actual space could be beneficial to assist those interested in the plans, to better see what needs to be done.

Judge Moore did note that three people had signed up to speak and called Jeff Hunt to the podium to share his thoughts. Mr. Hunt thanked the court for the opportunity to speak about a few things

regarding the process of the courthouse renovation. He first expressed frustration about a lack of information available to the public regarding the process and plans for the restoration. It was concerning to him because he believes without that information being made readily available to Fannin County residents, it is impossible for the public to know what decisions are being planned regarding the courthouse after renovation is completed. And, without proper information, Mr. Hunt felt the public would not be able to adequately give input as to what functions and occupants would be in the courthouse. He then voiced his belief that the district court belonged in the courthouse and had been disappointed to learn a few weeks ago, that it’s return to the courthouse was not to be. Mr. Hunt stated he believes the courthouse project is much more than restoring a building to its original appearance because the county courthouse represented the seat of authority for this county and its people.

Commissioner Lackey responded to Mr. Hunt and

informed him that this matter had come up before and the plans were adopted 2 or 3 years ago. He stated the floor plans had been an agenda item at one time and he believed had been put on a website but would today make sure they were put on the website. He further added that an architect had explained to him that the courthouse did not have the security features needed for a secure entrance, secure parking spaces and a secure way to bring in prisoners for a district court.

Judge Moore responded to Mr. Hunt thanking him for his interest and explaining that the purpose of these meetings was the process of informing and getting input regarding decisions needing to be made.

After hearing from Mr. Hunt, Judge Moore asked if there were any more comments and a discussion ensued. After that discussion, Judge Moore called Judge Blake to speak.

Judge Blake thanked the court for their time and spoke about workshops having occurred before today that were not action items. She said the floor plans being an action item, touched on Mr.

Hunt’s point. A publicly noted workshop could have given the same information needed in the way of input without the court being put in a position to act today on the information received today. She did want the Commissioners Court to know that she was very excited about the courthouse renovation and still a supporter regardless of what they decided to do. She was disappointed that the district court would not be in the completed courthouse and in the way the decisions have been handled. She noted she had been requesting security for a long time and today still had the same level of security at the South Annex she’s had in the past at the courthouse. So, she was not interested in the excuse of a “lack of security” being the reason the district court would not be housed in the newly restored courthouse.

She also said there was sure to be disapproval coming from the taxpayers when more find out the district court will not be in the completed courthouse. She did want it known that she’s okay with changes needing to be made and appreciated Judge Moore

plans in June but was not okay that she had not been contacted by any of the commissioners regarding the change of plans for the district court. She also wants it known she believes it would be a mistake to finalize what is going to be done with the courthouse before having concrete plans for a permanent home for the district court. Before leaving off her comments, she made an impassioned plea to the Commissioners Court to not wait for a new Justice Center to provide security for the district court, but to vote to use available security funds now to provide the security her court desperately needs.

Discussion ensued after her comments and Judge Moore assured her, they were trying to work on the situation of building a safe place for her court and was hoping to get the Justice Center built close to the same time as the completion of the restored courthouse.

Mike Nejtek was next to speak after Judge Blake and spoke on similar concerns previously discussed and after some discussion stated that what he really wanted to get across today, was that going forward we can handle the Justice Center project in a better manner than the courthouse renovation was handled and should do so.

After some discussion between Mr. Nejtek and commissioners, Judge Moore spoke to what had been said with assurances that he and the commissioners want to make sure that everything needed by all parties is done as best as possible and assure all that their concerns have been heard and that they are trying to act on all the input they have received and are receiving.

Judge Moore invited Kim Richards to speak and Ms. Richards said she just wanted to make the short statement that she is fine with the deci-

sion to be in the Justice Center or the courthouse but wanted to call attention to there being an empty courtroom in the finished courthouse should the district court be moved to the Justice Center.

Judge Moore asked after the speakers concluded what the commissioners thought about needing more time for more informational input. #4 Executive Session: Consultation with Attorney a closed meeting will be held pursuant to Section 551.0725 of the Government Code for deliberation regarding contract negotiations where deliberation in an open meeting would have a detrimental effect on the County’s interests with a third party-regarding contract for Justice Center: Judge Moore explained there has not been a contract entered into yet and this time with the attorney is only the beginning of those talks. He asked for a motion to enter executive session, motion was made by Commissioner Magness and seconded

by Commissioner Whitlock.

Judge Moore asked for a motion to enter back into regular session at 11:56 a.m. Motion was made by Commissioner Self and seconded by Commissioner Whitlock. #5 Discussion, consideration and action regarding Executive Session: Justice Moore said that per the discussion, the next step would be to get an architect on board and action was taken Tuesday to look at funds.

So the next step is to look for the architect and he asked for a motion to address looking for an architect. Commissioner Lackey motioned to go out to request the qualifications for an architect for the new Justice Center. Motion was seconded

by Commissioner Magness.

Motion passed and Judge Moore said he will inform the public regarding the architect and location for the new Justice Center and welcomes any input from the public in order to make good decisions going forward. #6 Adjourn: Motion to adjourn was made by Commission Magness and seconded by Commissioner Self.

JESUS TO THE CHURCH IN THYATIRA: Revelation: 2-18-29. “The Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet are like burnished bronze, says this, “I know your deeds, and your love and faith and service and perseverance, and that your deeds of late are greater than at first. But I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and leads My bond-servants astray so that they commit acts of immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. I gave her time to repent, and she does not want to repent of her immorality. Behold, I will throw her on a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds.

And I will kill her children with pestilence, and all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds. But I say to you, the rest who are in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not known the deep things of Satan, as they call them—I place no other burden on you. Nevertheless, what you have, hold fast until I come. He who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, TO HIM I WILL GIVE AUTHORITY OVER THE NATIONS; AND HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON, AS THE VESSELS OF THE POTTER ARE BROKEN TO PIECES, as I also have received authority from My Father; and I will give him the morning star. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Thyatira was a smaller community than the three previous letters to whom Jesus dictated letters. It was a community whose business model was based on using the resources of the land on which it was built. The soil in Thyatira was rich in minerals which enabled its citizens to produce a vibrant red dye used to make fabric. The purple dye and fabric produced in Thyatira were sought by royalty and dignitaries.

It was an “artsy” community whose economy was dominated by trade guilds for the bronze, linen, leather, pottery, and dye industries. Trade guilds might also be known today as labor unions. Due to Thyatira’s size, they were in some ways insulated from the heavy hand and interest of the Roman Government, thus Thyatira’s local governing body had a profound influence in the community. Local leaders promoted the interests of their members, and it would be difficult for a tradesman unassociated or in direct conflict with any guild (the local governing body) to conduct business in Thyatira. Small Town, USA. The Church Body in Thyatira was filled with good, faithful people. They were known for their good works in the community, for which Jesus commended them. They had persevered to keep their faith intact. But as is always the case with Jesus, He shines His Light on the good and bad. They had a problem because they were allowing a leader in the community, to stay and teach a message in the Church that was leading the vulnerable in the church astray. “Allow” is a passive word that indicates the members knew the difference between right and wrong, good and evil, but allowed the evil to remain. Room does not permit a complete overview of Jezebel, but it can be found in the Old testament books of First and Second Kings. Her spirit was alive in Thyatira and is still alive today. Her teaching was one that encouraged and engaged in immorality and ALLOWED IT to be introduced into the church along with various forms of idolatry including the worship of one’s own desires, otherwise known as the worship of SELF. The faithful members of the Church in Thyatira had allowed this to happen, obviously too timid to stand up to the evil. They would not buck the system; they were afraid of how they would be perceived and how a stance for Truth might inevitably threaten their own standing in the community. This stance against the status-quo might even cause them to lose their job or threaten their ability to do business. To be certain, they would lose popularity and influence. No need to rock the boat. They were a timid church with selfish motives. Just recently I listened as a pastor told of how he was called on to offer a prayer of guidance at a meeting of a local government body that was addressing serious issues. They asked him to offer the invocation but to restrict his prayer by leaving out the name of Jesus. He accepted their invitation, but he did not comply with their request. In a separate event, an evangelist was called to lead a series of revival meetings but was given a list of subjects that could not be addressed. Off-limit topics were abortion, homosexuality and other immoral acts as defined by the Bible. The church was asking them to be led by their desire to be politically correct rather than by the leading of The Holy Spirit of God. The Letter to Thyatira is Jesus’ Word to all churches through the ages. “Those who have ears that hear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the CHURCHES. (Revelation 2:29).

Jesus wants the members of His Body, the Church, to hold fast to the Truth and to OVERCOME. That word “overcome” in the original language means to Conquer. Conquer infers conflict in which Jesus asks us to “stand up” for His principles which were and always have conflicted with the world view.

The result of not doing so means that the most vulnerable among us can be lead astray by false teaching for which they receive the same recompense as their teacher, “Indeed, I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of Her deeds.” (Revelation 2:22) Jesus said HIS WAY IS THE TRUTH, IT IS HIS LIFE. (John 14:6). He wants HIS ETERNAL LIFE for every person. We have been commissioned and given the Power to lead those lost to HIS Truth to eternal life in HIM. That requires losing our fear and timidity. It requires we lose ourselves for His Name sake and for those whom He willingly gave His Life. When The Church is The Church as He called us to be, the people rejoice and inherit HIS ETERNAL LIFE. Lord, help us!

The Southern Cross Band Returns to Bonham for a Night of Great Country Music foundation was set. Having fronted other bands and been on the road, he had a good ear for what people wanted to hear. There have been plenty of members come and go over the last 11 years, but it has settled down to become one of the more popular bands in the local area of Sherman, Denison and Bonham.

This band never intended to be a road band, and has stuck close to local establishments Loose Wheels, Red Rock Saloon and VFW’s; however reaching out is not out of the question.

When thinking about classic country music, your mind automatically takes you to Merle Haggard, George Strait, George Jones and the like... their music along with a host of others are the foundation that make up The Southern Cross Band. This band has been the gold standard for country dance music in this area for decades.

It all started with the idea to throw some friends together, some with much musical history and others just wanting to give it a try, and see what they could put together, and the band was born, practicing twice a week, having a good time all the way. It is good to keep plants outside as long as possible, but the weather will demand a move soon. Some potted and tropical plants do not like when the temperature dips below 40. Other plants are a bit hardier and can handle a few degrees lower.

Be sure to consider each plant’s light requirements and place them accordingly. It is good to group plants together that have a need for a moist environment, so they can create their own microclimate. Usually the humidity in a home is lower than the humidity level they are used to outside. Low humidity can lead to leaf drop or

brown crisping around the leaf edges, or even encourage spider mites. There are a several ways to avoid trauma due to lower humidity. Plants can be set on a saucer containing pebbles and water. From time to time give overwintering plants

and houseplants a shower to simulate rain, raise humidity levels, and remove whatever dust has accumulated. Misting plants can always be helpful,

as well as, running a humidifier. Another fun way to add humidity might be a tabletop fountain in the plant grouping.

Houseplants are not the only things to bring in. Jalapeno peppers can keep producing as long as the temperature stays well above 40. Indeterminate tomatoes may also keep going.

But they will both need a sunny place.

Also, herbs like parsley, thyme, oregano, marjoram, dill and perhaps even cilantro would like a cool windowsill indoors.

Having plants indoors through the winter improves the oxygen and air quality in the home, and enjoying their beauty and tastiness perks up our life!

Texas Crop and Weather Report – Nov. 3, 2020 Wholesale turkey prices are up and production is down amid looming uncertainty over how COVID-19 will impact traditional consumer trends this holiday season, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert.

Production of whole turkeys is down this year, and prices are up as the industry grapples with uncertain holiday market demand due to COVID-19.

David Anderson, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist, Bryan-College Station, said

the turkey market has been more interesting than normal going into the holidays.

Supply, demand and the subsequent pricing and marketing of holiday turkey in 2020 appears like it could be heavily influenced by COVID-19, Anderson said.

Some aspects of the market are already being affected.

On the supply side, turkey production is down 7.7% for October compared to the same time last year, Anderson said. And overall production is down 2.7% for 2020 so far compared to 2019.

Turkeys in cold storage,

which are typically stocked up for the holiday rush, were down 11.5% in September, he said.

Lower supplies have driven prices up this year, Anderson said. Wholesale turkeys, both tom, which are typically 1624 pounds, and hen, which are 8-16 pounds, prices were 19% higher compared to last year due to tighter supplies.

Last year, wholesale turkey prices were 20% below the five-year average. Anderson said it would be interesting to see if retailers continue the practice of running specials on turkeys to draw shoppers.

Game Warden Field Notes

The following items are compiled from recent Texas Parks and Wildlife law enforcement reports.

Follow Your Nose Two Houston County game wardens were patrolling the northwestern end of Houston County when they entered a tract of land and saw an open field with what first appeared to be dove blinds close to a tripod feeder. One of the wardens crossed the field to check the feeder and as he got closer to the “blinds” he smelled a strong odor of marijuana.

The “blinds” were improvised grow houses for many large marijuana plants. The wardens then noticed a car parked behind bushes in front of a dilapidated house and could hear an air conditioner running. Upon further inspection around the house, the wardens found more marijuana plants.

The wardens returned to their patrol truck and called the local sheriff’s office for back up. They then returned to the site and arrested the suspect.

After further investigation, the house was confirmed to be a grow house complete with lights, fertilizer, surge protectors, timers, air filters, humidifiers and water. The suspect in the house had served time for murder and transporting two kilos of cocaine across the southern border. They were also in possession of a .410 shotgun and .45 pistol. The pistol was reported as stolen.

The case and suspect were turned over to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office. Cases pending.

Neighborhood Watch One evening, a Bosque County game warden received a call from a resident within a local neighborhood who said they had just witnessed their neighbor dragging a deer from a large ranch behind the neighborhood. The warden contacted the suspect at his residence and saw a whitetail buck hanging. When asked why the hunter killed it, the hunter replied to eat. The warden then enlightened the hunter and told him it was not deer season until Saturday. Citations were issued, the deer was seized and donated to a local family.

It Belongs in a Museum!

A Bandera County game warden received a call from a landowner who saw a white pickup on the property and hidden in the brush. The landowner said the driver side door was open, but no one was around the truck. The warden arrived on the property and two individuals, a male and female, were standing near the pickup. The warden met with the landowner and told the couple they were trespassing.

The individuals admitted to digging for arrowheads without the consent of the landowner. The pair then led the warden to the location where they were digging, and the couple’s tools and cart were still on location. The two individuals were taken into custody and transported to the Bandera County Jail for crim-

inal trespass-natural resource code (antiquities code). Cases pending.

Tree Envy A McCulloch County game warden was contacted by a landowner who found a tree stand installed on his property.

The tree was near a property boundary fence and a ladder was placed against the fence on the neighbor’s side of the property. After a brief investigation, the warden learned the identity of the individual responsible for setting up the stand. A few days later, the warden met with the subject to issue a citation for criminal trespass and during the conversation, the violator explained he didn’t think it was a big deal to put his stand on the neighbor’s tree since it was only a few feet on the other side of the fence and it was the best tree around Butt-Dial A Harris County game warden received an Operation Game Thief complaint about two individuals shrimping in nursery waters. The warden responded and saw the individuals leaving the scene in a white boat.

After watching the individuals stop at a dock, the warden went to their address, but they had already left. However, the identities of the pair were provided by relatives who owned the dock. The warden again located their white boat further up the channel and saw as the female occupant received a phone call. Both individuals hastily pulled a shrimp trawl into nearby brush on an island before jumping back in the boat and fleeing the area. The warden attempted to contact the woman by phone, but she hung up on the call. The person who reported the incident helped provide the warden a boat ride out to the island to retrieve the shrimp trawl and the several undersized fish in it. The woman later called the warden by accident and a private conversation between the two suspects was heard.

The pair discussed dragging

the net into the brush and said “maybe the game warden didn’t see it…” The next day, two wardens returned to the subject’s address and located both individuals. The white boat was trailered in the front yard. After interviewing both subjects, the wardens received a confession. Multiple citations and cases of civil restitution were issued for shrimping in closed waters and failure to possess individual bait shrimp trawl license and the undersized fish.

Prove It One weekend, two game wardens teamed up to patrol La Salle County and made several cases for over the limit of mourning doves, hunting mourning doves over bait and no hunting license. In total, 114 mourning doves were confiscated and donated to families in the community.

One of the cases involved four hunters checked at a camp with 68 cleaned mourning doves. The hunters claimed to have hunted near two tanks on a mowed roadway on the ranch. The wardens checked the area on the way out of the ranch and found very little evidence of hunting in the area. The wardens decided to drive around the ranch and discovered tracks leading to a field with a deer feeder converted to a milo feeder next to a water trough. The field had evidence someone had been hunting there. The wardens went back and confronted the hunters. One of the hunters wanted to see the evidence for himself, so he led them back to the field and then confessed to hunting the mourning doves over the baited area. Cases and civil restitution are pending.

Largemouth bass are good on lipless crankbaits, fat wacky worms, and silver bladed spinners in brush piles, standing timber, and rough shorelines. White bass are good in 20-35’ with slabs and swimbaits near main lake humps. flats and drop-offs. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs in marinas and near submerged structure. Catfish are good on punch bait, shrimp, and cut bait.

Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 67 degrees; 1.58 low. Crappie are good on minnows or jigs fishing 12-24’ over brush piles and bridges. White bass are good in the 20-30’ bouncing slabs and heavy spoons. Look for birds diving over feeding schools of white bass. Black bass are fair on crankbaits

and jigs in 8-24’. Catfish are good on punch bait and cut bait in 14-25’.

Lewisville EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 63 degrees; 0.41 low. Black bass are good fishing points, coves, and standing timber with the jerk baits, shad like swimbaits, chartreuse spinners, and bladed jigs.

White bass are excellent on white or chartreuse bouncing slabs and jigging spoons in 20-35’. Look for birds diving over feeding schools of white bass. Swimbaits and chrome slabs are effective with this topwater action Crappie are good on minnows and jigs around brush piles, bridges, and standing timber. Catfish are excellent on cut bait and punch bait.

Ray Roberts GOOD; Water lightly stained; 66 degrees; 0.62 low. Largemouth bass are fair on jigs, diving crankbaits, and spinners in 5-20’ near timber, rip rap, and creeks. White bass are good in 15-35’ on slabs near main lake points, slopes, and drop-offs. Crappie are good on minnows and small jigs in brush piles between 18-28’. Catfish are good on punch bait and cut bait.

Tawakoni EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 63-67 degrees; 1.35 low. Catfish are excellent on live bait and cut bait. Largemouth bass are good on crankbaits, Texas-rigged plastic worms, football jigs, and lightcolored swimbaits. White bass and hybrid stripers are excellent on live bait and slabs, with some fish schooling on the surface.

Use sonar to locate fish in deeper water near ridges,

flats, and humps in the main lake. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs around brush piles, docks, and bridge pilings.

Texoma GOOD. Water lightly stained; 68 degrees; 2.69 low. Striped bass and white bass are good on live shad and slabs.

Diving birds are marking feeding schools feeding on the surface throughout the lake. Largemouth bass are fair fishing plastic worms, silver bladed spinners, and minnow-like jerk baits in 1228’ with some fish moving into shallow water in the 3-10’ range chasing shad.

Crappie are fair on minnows near boathouses, timber, creek ledges, and brush piles in 15-25’. Catfish are good on cut bait and punch bait.

Tori Dotson collected nine kills and an ace for the Lady Hornets (17-4), who assured their third-consecutive trip to the Region II-1A quarterfinals -- at the least -- to face Hubbard on Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at

trict 16-2A’s top seed to the 1A playoffs.

This run also marks the Lady Hornets’ ninth-consecutive postseason, after they finished 16-2A play this fall tied for second place in the overall standings with Class 2A Collinsville at 10-4.

Additionally, Hilliard had two aces and a dig, Baccus garnered a pair of digs and aces and Graves had four aces and a dig for Dodd City against Aquilla.

By Rich Hilliard MILLER GROVE -- District 23-1A runner-up finishes again advanced Dodd City’s girls and boys varsity cross country teams to the regional competitions.

Senior Riley Evans and junior Jael Grijalva of Ector also qualified individually via the 23-1A varsity girls race on Oct. 28 at Miller Grove for the Region III-1A competitions on Nov. 9 at the Jesse Owens Memorial Complex in Dallas.

The regional girls race occurs on Nov. 9 at 11:30 a.m., followed by the boys at noon.

Sophomore Autumn Brown finished sixth and freshman Kaylen Atchley garnered eighth to lead the Lady Hornets in the 23-1A varsity girls race on Oct. 28 at Miller Grove.

For Ector’s Evans, the advance garnered a fourth-consecutive trip to regional cross country competition.

The advance equates the second-straight for Dodd City’s Lindsey Mauppin, Carson Morrison, Wild and Jenkins to the girls regional competition.

The advance also marks the third-consecutive to the boys regional competition for Brody Mauppin -- his first came at Sam Rayburn -- and secondstraight for Allen, Munger and Baker of Dodd City.

Bonham- Charles David Castle, age 81, of Bonham, TX was born on March 1, 1939 in Flagg Springs Community in Fannin County to Orville Frank and Sallie Fannie (Lassiter) Castle. He joined our heavenly Father on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at Clyde Cosper Texas State Veterans Home.

Charles David Castle married Patsy Ann (Houchens) Castle on July 27, 1960 in Bonham, TX; she preceded him in death on November 15, 2015. Charles served honorably in the United States Army from Oct of 1961 to October of 1963 and served in the reserves until 1967. He was a machine operator at General Cable until retirement.

Charles was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Linda preceded him in death on May 28, 1996. On February 7, 1997 Bobbie Joe Harris married Dorothy (Lankford) Harris in Savoy, TX. Bobbie was a graduate of Ector High School. He was a lifelong farmer and worked for General Cable as a Lab Tech before retiring. Bobbie was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon.

Bobbie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He is survived by wife Dorothy Harris of Bonham; son Ron Harris and wife Charlotte of Denison; stepchildren, Donnie Lankford and wife Sandra of Ector and Clydette Hance and husband Gary of Durant; grandchildren, Rodney Harris of Bonham; Mike Hance and wife Kristi and Stacey Rainwater and husband Todd, Lori Casstevens and husband Nathan, and Jared Lankford and wife Lauren; great grandchildren Sabrina and Tyler Pickle along with numerous other great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

GEORGIA ANN CANNON

Georgia Ann Cannon, age 73, of Trenton, Texas passed away Friday evening, October 30, 2020 at Texoma Medical Center in Bonham, Texas. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Wise Funeral Home.

Georgia was born August 5, 1947, the daughter of James Andrew Phipps and Violet May Brandt Phipps. She married her high school sweetheart on August 6, 1966 in San Leandro, California. They were married for 54 years before her passing.

Together they raised three sons.

Georgia and her sister, Nancy shared their love of shopping.

Some would say they were shopaholics. She enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, and bowling.

Georgia and her husband loved traveling, they would often pack up and go, excited for their next adventure. She always had a smile on her face. Georgia is preceded in death by her father.

JAMES OLEN HENRY AUGUST 31, 1933 – OCTOBER 31, 2020

James Olen Henry, age 87, passed away at Faith Presbyterian Hospice in Dallas. He was born to Olen Oren and Lora Bernice Phillips Henry August 31, 1933 in Leonard.

James graduated from Bells High School, then joined the Army and served in the Korean War as a radar operator at Thule AFB in Greenland.

Serving his neighbors and country was an important part of James’ life. After returning from war, he enrolled in Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He was ordained in 1962 and preached full time in churches across Texas, many of them in North and Northeast Texas for 34 years, and he continued to serve in churches wherever he was called through 2016. After he retired, James and Irene enjoyed participating in the flea markets where James was known as the “Handle Man”.

James married Irene Jones February 4, 1956 in Hugo, Oklahoma. They raised four children together.

James is survived by his wife, Irene, children: Sherry Lowry, Kathye Henry, Jami Davidson and husband Bruce, and Cliff Henry. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Jeremy Looney, Christi Tatman and husband Doug, Pate Hubbert and wife Catelyn, Brice McGehee and wife Jenna, Brooke Hensley and husband J.C., Bailey McGehee, Nathan Henry, Seth Henry, Colt Henry, and ten great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at Bois D’Arc Creek Cowboy Church in Bonham. The service was conducted by Kevin Lane and James Seigler. Interment followed at Burns Cemetery in Trenton.

The pallbearers were Jeremy Looney, Pate Hubbert, Brice McGehee, Nathan Henry, Seth Henry, and Colt Henry. The honorary pallbearers were Bob Edwards, Doug Tatman, Darrin Whitmire, Roy Nolen, Tommy Burns, Roy Schickendanz and Jessie McFarland.

VELLA PUCKETT

Vella M. Brock Puckett was born on March 1, 1931 at Globe, Arizona to John Brock and Lottie Tryon Brock. She passed away on October 26, 2020 at her home in Savoy, Texas surrounded by her family. She was 89 years of age.

She married Roger Forrest Puckett on December 4, 1950 at Globe, Arizona. Together they made a home and raised their three daughters. He was a minister in the Church of Christ. They ministered together in Arizona, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. They also served in missions to Wyoming and Australia. He preceded her in death on October 14, 1978. After Roger passed away, she went to work at the Bealls Department store where she retired after 29 years.

While working at Bealls she continued ministry on missions trips to Jamaica, Mexico, Costa Rica and South America. She made over 40 trips to Jamaica. She made her last missions trip in 2017.

She loved the church and was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and was currently attending the Ivanhoe Church of Christ.

Vella was a faithful wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She loved her family and she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her daughters, Lavonna Clinton (Billy) of Savoy, Sharon Davis (Durward) of Abbeville, Mississippi, and Rogena McClain (John) of Eufala, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Sheri Folkes (Eric), Tammie Dickison (Mike), Billy F. Clinton (Elisa), Ann Robinson (Derek), Gena Hesselrode (Adam), Carla Murray (Nathan), Carrie Lindsay (Drew), Adam McClain (Janice), and Amanda McClain; great-grandchildren, Zach Folkes (Blaire), Meagen Folkes, Daniel Dickison (Rhianne), David Dickison (Emily), Mark Dickison, Melanie Dickison, Kristen Dickison, Kemplin Dickison, William Clinton, Emmy Clinton, Samuel Clinton, Davis Hesselrode, Abby Hesselrode, Ethan Hesselrode, Henley Murray, Julia Murray, Landon Murray, Zachary Lindsay, Liam Lindsay, Declyn Lindsay, Charlotte McClain, Miles McClain; and great-great- granddaughter, Madelynn Dickison.

SUE HARZKE (1937 -2020)

Sandra Sue (Keene) Harzke was born to Lesta Mae Withrow Keene and Carleton Douglas Keene in Bonham, TX on August 23, 1937 at Allen Memorial Hospital.

“Sue” grew up in Sherman, TX and Bonham, TX. In Sherman, she attended Crockett Elementary, St. Joseph’s Academy, and Sherman High School. Her family moved to Bonham, TX prior to her sophomore year in high school. She was a co-editor of the yearbook and a cheerleader. Her classmates voted her Most Popular and Football Queen.

She was an excellent student and graduated a year early from Bonham High School (1954).

She was an honors pre-medical student and microbiology lab assistant at East Texas State College, now Texas A&M at Commerce (1954-1956). There, she was a member of the Marpessa Social Club, which later 11-03-20 became the Chi Omega Sorority. She subsequently attended St. Paul’s School of Medical Technology and became a Registered Medical Technologist, American Society of Clinical Pathologists (1957). Her first job as a medical technologist was at Sherman Community Hospital (1958-1962).

Thereafter, Sue worked at the Speegle Clinic and Hospital in Garland, TX and lived in Dallas, TX, where she met Jack A. Harzke—for whom it was love at first sight. They were married at 7th & Main Baptist Church in Bonham, TX on Saturday, May 4, 1963. After a one-night honeymoon in Dallas, they packed up and moved to Austin, TX. Jack started his new job on that Monday.

In Austin, Sue worked at Clinical Pathology Laboratories on and off for about 3 years, while she and Jack grew their young family. They had two children, Charles Douglas “Chuck” Harzke (1964) and Amy Jo Harzke (1968). Sue stayed home to raise her children until returning to work at DesRosiers, Wernecke, Associates in 1979, where she worked until her retirement in 1994. Along with Sue’s mother, the couple moved to Elgin, TX, in 1997 where Jack had been the City Manager.

In retirement, Sue enjoyed volunteering at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Lions Club Thrift Store, and Elgin Community Cupboard.

Sue’s family and friends will remember her fondly for so many reasons. Sue valued education and loved science, and she proudly passed these passions on to her children—Chuck became a medical doctor and Amy Jo earned her doctorate in public health. Sue was much appreciated as an armchair diagnostician (a.k.a., “the real ‘family doctor’”), assisting friends and neighbors in determining whether and when it was time to go to the doctor or ER! She was also known to some as “Nancy Neat,” and kept one of the cleanest houses in North Park Estates! As a young mom, she was an avid bowler and, her children will attest, a prolific crocheter (crocheted vests in school colors!). She was second mom and “Aunt Sue” to the Schedler girls who lived next door—Karen, Susan, and Teresa. As the children grew, her favorite pastime was watching both her kiddos play every sport that involved a ball! In later life, she enjoyed watching all college sports, but especially the Aggies, and was proud that she “finally got to be an Aggie.” Sue most recently adopted two more daughters, 11/10/20Janice Montalvo and Jenny Phillips, their next-door neighbors in Elgin. Sue prided herself in always being able to find something to like about every person she met.

Although Sue enjoyed working and socializing with people, she also loved being home and spending time alone. She had a rich inner life and daily devotional practice. She was strong both within herself and through her faith in God. Sue never stopped learning and growing as a human being; her heart became more expansive and inclusive with each year.

Sue will be missed terribly by many but especially by her husband and children. Sue was the love of Jack’s life, his sweetheart and companion of more than 57 years. It is difficult even to think of one without the other. She was a fierce protector of her children and an exemplar of strength, compassion, and faith.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Doris Mae (Keene) Ritchie and her nephew Jim Ritchie. She is survived by her husband, Jack, her children, Chuck and Amy Jo, her daughter in-law, Kelly (Callaham) Harzke, her grandchildren, Audrey, Jackson, and Mariel Harzke, and Josiah Day, as well as her niece, Debra Ritchie Carrico, nephew Tim Ritchie, niece by marriage, Shelley Ritchie, and numerous great nieces and nephews and their children.

A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at 1:00 pm on Friday, November 13th. The church is located at 401 East 8th St. in Elgin, TX. Protective masks and social distancing will be required. For those unable to attend in person, the service will also be live streamed from the church’s Facebook page.

Funeral Home. Rev. Paul Wedaa officiated. Mrs. Tredway passed away on November 2, 2020 at a hospital in Carrollton, Texas.

She was born on March 27, 1928 in Dodd City, Texas, the daughter of Francis Albert May and Lula Arvilla Foreman May. She was a 1945 graduate of Windom High School and married H.C. “Dick” Tredway on February 6, 1946 in Bonham, Texas and he preceded her in death on July 22, 1982. She was a member of the Waterview Baptist Church in Richardson and was employed at Taylor Publishing in Dallas from 1959-1993 when she retired.

Her primary job was publishing yearbooks. Mrs. Tredway was preceded in death by her sons, Samuel S. “Sammy” Tredway

Carol was born on June 7, 1942, in Ladonia, Texas, the daughter of Fred Meredith and Lottie Ray (Farmer) Rattan. She married the love of her life and best friend John Arthur Smith on March 8, 1958, and for 62 years they were sweethearts. She missed him desperately after his death on July 4, 2020.

Although employed at Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Ladonia for 27 years, her true occupation was wife, mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother. Her family and God’s family, especially the members of the Oak Ridge Church of Christ, were her main loves.

She exemplified the wife of noble character in Proverbs 31. Her sphere of influence was infinite.

Her wishes were for all to love God, love and hold family and friends near, express love, and to teach love and obedience to Christ and His church which will lead to eternal life with Him.

Pastor David Brackett officiated with Pastor Bobby Hawkins assisting. Patsy passed away Friday afternoon, October 30, 2020 at her home in Bonham, Texas.

Patsy was born on March 8, 1942 in Remmel, Arkansas the daughter of Ivy Lewin Nance and Eva LeAlice Moore Nance.

She was a member of Randolph Baptist Church and the chapter of Eastern Star in, Whitewright, Texas. Patsy held a double masters degree from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas and Southeastern State University in Durant, Oklahoma.

She started the cosmetology program at Grayson County college and retired from there as the director after 32 years.

She loved teaching and touched the lives of many students and patrons over the years.

Patsy was married to James Marshall Kincade on November 18, 1982 in Randolph, Texas.

They were married for 37 years.

In her lifetime she enjoyed oil painting, and crocheting. Most recently she enjoyed watching game shows, Dancing with the Stars, doing Sudoku and other puzzles. Patsy was a dog lover and was especially fond of her Bichon, Barbie. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will always remember her as their beloved “P-Pat”.

Patsy is preceded in death by her parents and brother Ivy Dale Nance. She is survived by her husband, James Marshall Kincade of Bonham, Texas; daughters, Fondi Hayes of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Rhonda Hawkins and husband Bobby of Luella, Texas; step-daughter, Alicia Easley and husband Jeff of Denton, Texas; 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, extended family and friends.

Betty Frances (Woodall) Reeves was born on November 8, 1932 in Shreveport, LA to Winifred and Louise (Haynie) Woodall. She married Floyd Lee Reeves on July 24, 1971 in Dallas, TX; he preceded her in death on March 22, 2006. Betty worked at Sears and Roebuck in clerical and retired after several years of service. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. October Rainfall in Honey Grove

By Malinda Allison The total official recorded rainfall in Honey Grove in October was 1.98 inches, with most of that rain coming near the end of the month. This is a dry October. However, for JanuaryOctober 2020 the total rainfall is 44.59.

There is historical rainfall data for Honey Grove from 1916 - 2008. The historic average for 1981-2010 for October is 5.39 inches, and

the historic average for 1981-2010 for January-October is 38.95 inches.

Press Release - “Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin’-byWorld” is a program designed to help people in poverty build resources for a better life. Participants are called investigators, and the class takes them through 16 weeks of self and community assessment with the goal of planning a future that brings stability to themselves and their families.

On Monday, October 26, investigators had the opportunity to hear from community leaders and professionals about various conditions in our community.

Economic conditions were addressed by Steve Filipowicz, Executive Director of BEDCO. Mark Kinnaird, Director of Community Development for the City of Bonham discussed local housing conditions. Financial/Banking conditions were covered by Alan McDonald of First United Bank.

Kelly Trompler, Superintendent of Bonham ISD, was on hand to discuss Education conditions, while Attorney Michael Evans focused on Public Sector conditions to include the tax base and governmental services. Patricia McBean, Director of Nurses from TMC Bonham, shared information regarding Health conditions.

County Judge Randy Moore rounded out the panel with his perceptions of Leadership conditions in our area.

The evening provided the dedicated Getting Ahead investigators a chance to learn first-hand about community resources in addition to es-

tablishing contact with community leaders who can help them on their way. During a panel discussion the community leaders were able to hear about some of the barriers the investigators face in their daily lives, including a lack of af-

fordable housing and the need for jobs in Fannin County that pay more than a living wage. A living wage can be defined as a minimum subsistence wage – a wage that only brings a family of four up to the poverty level.
