Letter to the Editor WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS From 2024-2026 I have used Endurance. I have a 2021 Chevy Silverado that has never been in the shop. Called Endurance and they turned me down for a check on my transmission. I have paid $158.68 every month. I ask for my money, $3800.00 back and have not heard anything from them. I think Endurance is a front. Stay away from scams-especially ones like Endurance. They are on the radio with great deals they claim. My wife has cancer and we have to make frequent trips to Dallas. I know that I can't depend on Endurance.

I am a perfectionist when it comes to funerals because every detail matters. I want each family I serve to walk into a beautiful, thoughtfully prepared service, one where the music begins at just the right moment and every meaningful detail is on full display. We have only one opportunity to honor a life well lived, and I want that tribute to be perfect for every Wise family. I give each family the same care and attention I would want for my own. I hope you see and feel the difference.

Excuse me, but I became so disgusted with your September 29th front-page article "No Voter Turned Away!" that I couldn't read but the first half. Here we are WEEKS from the general election, and the (Republican) SoS office is still running around like the Keystone Cops with their hair on fire trying to pull together registrations! Chaotic, last-minute situations like this always breed more problems & mistakes. And this is from the party that has had unfettered control of most processes coming out of Austin for years and that supposedly is the proponent of election integrity! We have the technology for a system that is above reproach. Build & maintain a database of unquestionably eligible voters that is updated daily by DPS, coroner offices, etc. Send little chip readers to all precincts in the State that can be swiped & tell the voting officials if a voter is eligible. This will eliminate duplicate voting, voting by dead people, fake votes, etc. Once a legal vote is accepted, ping the database, and lock that voter's account for any further voting in that election. So simple. So effective. Turn this over to private contractors & let the bureaucrats do something they can handle. Although I typically vote Republican, I'm going to be very unsympathetic to any discoveries of cheating that run counter to their candidates.

LT-ex Brown surpasses 400 yards on ground for U. Central Missouri

Former Leonard standout DJ Brown ended September having already reached 400 rushing yards for the University of Central Missouri. Brown ran for 156 yards on 28 carries on Sept. 26 at Missouri Southern State, including two touchdown runs. His longest carry equated a 21-yard gain. The effort took Brown to 402 rushing yards on 64 attempts, including seven touchdown runs for the Mules, through play in September.

Trenton varsity football nearing history as September concludes

By Rich Hilliard

Trenton finished September with its first 5-0 start in varsity football -- since 1959. The host Tigers on Sept. 25 defeated Whitewright, 33-28, in a District 9-2A-I opener for their fifth consecutive win to start their 2026 season and Andrew Raid-

en's first as their head coach after an offseason promotion. Trenton, which resumed playing varsity football in 2012, last started a varsity football season 5-0 in 1959 and tied its next game. Three straight losses followed to finish that lone eight-man season, as injuries took a toll on the squad. Trenton fielded a junior high

football team in 2009 and played as independent junior varsity squads for the following two seasons before its varsity return. Note: Research regarding Trenton football history prior to the 2009 overall restart provided and compiled by former Sherman Herald Democrat sports editor Bill Spinks.

Trenton's Ava Faggart (13) prepares to serve on Sept. 22 during a District 11-2A volleyball opener played in Trenton.

TRENTON -- Playing their first full season in their new gym and volleyball district will hopefully lead to a familiar result for Trenton's Lady Tigers: the playoffs. Returning junior Kinley Bingham, the Newcomer of the Year in its previous district alignment, as well as Cody Garewal, the Coach of the Year recipient in the old 10-2A, Trenton vies for its 11th postseason in the last 12 years. Junior Carly Medina, a second-team selection, and senior Ryleigh Billue, an honorable mention, also populate a roster now vying in the new 11-2A. These and other veterans from 2025's Class 2A Division-II bi-district finalist, now compete for one of four available playoffs berths with Cumby, Pioneer Technology and Arts Academies of Greenville and Fate, Quinlan Boles and Wolfe City.

Absentee Voting Information

Fannin County Clerk 2225 N. Center Street, Suite 200 Bonham, TX 75418

(Part 2.) Recently, the national media and the social media have become fascinated with the problems with mail-in ballots. Considering how close we are to a national election, these issues need to be addressed. Please allow for the legal disclaimer. The Fannin County Elections Administration works in conjunction with the Texas Secretary of State’s Office regarding our elections. The information being provided may not be applicable to other states and may not even portray other counties in Texas accurately. (Who knows what they are doing in Harris County?) First, all citizens must be registered in order to vote. If you are not registered, please contact our office and register. The deadline to register is October 5th for the upcoming November 3rd General Election. Having said that, let’s talk about some of the issues. Many people in the county have been receiving applications for absentee ballots by mail. While it’s nice that someone is trying to help, some of these applications are not in the correct format and did not come from the local elections office. If you fill it out and mail it to us, we may need to contact you and send

you the correct form or get additional information over the phone. One of the forms in question has places for the last four digits of your driver’s license number. In Texas, we are required to get your full driver’s license number OR the last four digits of your social security number. If you are already registered to vote by mail, we don’t need a new application until January. The SOS Office and our local office believe these forms are being generated and mailed from another state where the requirements are different. Unfortunately, there is no identifying information on the forms or we would try to correct the misinformation. If you are unsure of your status, please contact the Elections Administration. So, what if you want to vote by mail? Please let us help you. The deadline to apply to vote by mail is October 23, 2026. Please contact our office for an application and we will be happy to get the correct form to you. It is helpful if you include a phone number so we can verify information if needed, but not mandatory. Once you apply, your application is good until January 1st of the next year. All voters that vote by mail need to reapply once a year, preferably in January. We will accept your application anytime, but there are deadlines before each election. Is voting by mail safe? Will

my vote be counted? The answers to those questions are “Yes” and “Maybe.” In Texas, we document your application to vote by mail, we document the date your ballot was mailed, we document the date it was received, and we document the date it was reviewed by the Early Voting Ballot Board. All of this documentation is submitted to the state as well. While there has been discussion regarding the inclusion of the United States Postal Service in the tracking of these ballots, we are already doing all of that. Adding another layer to the process probably isn’t going to help and may even slow the process down. This may be needed in other states, but not here. Will your vote be counted? The answer is almost always. If there is a problem with your ballot, we will reach out and give the voter the opportunity to correct it. The most common problem is lack of ID information or forgot to include signature. We do everything we can to correct this. After that, our next problem is that the Elections Administration didn’t get your ballot in a timely manner. We encourage those that vote by mail to return the ballot as soon as possible. If you can mail it in Bonham that may take several days off the delivery time as well. The smaller post offices sometimes end up having their

mail sent to the larger distribution centers before coming back to the county. Your ballot must be in our hands not later than 5:00 PM on the day after the election to be counted. The Fannin County Elections Administration would like to express our deep appreciation for the service we receive from our local post office. They go above and beyond the call of duty (and have even been known to make additional deliveries) to get ballots to our office. We know not all counties have this kind of working relationship with the local post office. We are extremely grateful that we do! Should voting by mail be abolished? There are lots of opinions out there, but here are some things to consider. Many of our military members vote by mail. These people are willing to die to protect our freedom and our right to vote. Should college students or people who are temporarily working outside of Texas but maintain a Texas residence be allowed to vote by mail? What about states like Alaska? Not everyone gets to enjoy Texas weather! Getting to the polls there is often difficult. Now let’s get personal for a moment. I have a younger sister who is disabled. Over the years, she has lost most of her vision, can no longer drive, has had a kidney transplant which impacted her immune system,

and is occasionally hospitalized. Over the years she has lost many of her abilities and freedoms, but she still has the right to vote and participate in the democratic process. If she is able, she goes to the polls during early voting and surrenders her ballot by mail. If she isn’t able to physically go, she mails in her ballot. Getting her ballot early also gives her time to research the candidates and issues. I don’t believe people like my sister should be told they can’t vote if they can’t get to the polls. She is a citizen and her opinion and her vote should still count. Never forget that many of our disabled citizens became disabled defending our rights. In Fannin County, we will mail out over 400 ballots for the upcoming November election. At the local level, it is enough to impact the outcome of some races. These are people that have a vested interest in what happens at the local, state, and national level. We believe their votes should count and we will continue to do everything we can to make sure their votes count, while continuing to ensure the integrity of our elections. The goal of the Fannin County Elections Administration is to never turn away a registered voter that resides in our county.

National Night Out

Continued from page 1

The City of Bonham Animal Shelter will have animals available for adoption under the Trade Days pavilion. Sponsored adoptions will be available, providing a wonderful opportunity to meet one of our shelter animals and give them the loving home they deserve. BATTLE OF THE BADGES BLOOD DRIVE National Night Out will also include a Battle of the Badges Blood Drive with Carter BloodCare - Texoma from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Community members are encouraged to roll up their sleeves, donate blood and support their favorite badge in a friendly competition between Police and Fire. While the competition adds a little fun to the evening, the purpose is much bigger. Your pint may not win the badge, but it could help save a life. “National Night Out allows our officers and fellow first responders to connect with the community outside of an emergency or enforcement situation,” said Captain Elliott of the Bonham Police Department. “We want our residents, especially our young people, to know the men and women who serve their community. We hope families will come out, spend time with us, and enjoy a great evening together.” National Night Out is a nationwide community-building initiative that promotes partnerships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. For Bonham, the event is an opportunity to bring residents, first responders, businesses, and community organizations together while strengthening relationships and creating positive connections.

PSALMS 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Social Autocorrect

We’ve all experienced issues with autocorrect on our phones and devices such as the one recently experienced by my brother-in-law. Living on a ranch in remote West Texas, he and his neighbors often relied on one another for assistance. One day, my brother-in-law received a phone call from a neighbor who was going to be late getting home, so the neighbor asked him to go and lock the chickens in the chicken coop. My brother-inlaw was glad to help, so when evening came, he went to the neighbor’s place and locked the chickens in the coop. Afterwards, my brother-inlaw became concerned that perhaps not all of the chickens had been put in the coop, so he

texted his neighbor and asked, “How many chickens do you have?” A significant amount of time passed before the neighbor texted back the following: “My wife and I have none together, but from previous marriages, we have a total of five. We also have three grandchildren.” My brotherin-law’s phone had autocorrected the word ‘chicken’ to ‘children,' completely changing the meaning of the text! Thankfully it changed in a humorous way rather than a more serious one, reminding us that sometimes the autocorrect needs correcting. Having lived on this planet for several decades, I have noticed a sort of

‘autocorrecting’ happening in our society which I fear could have eternally devastating consequences for many. This social autocorrecting is not about correcting potential mistakes; rather, it is about justifying them. And it is not being done by computers or devices, but rather by society itself. Let me illustrate. I remember as a child watching shows such as I Love Lucy and The Dick Van Dyke Show on TV. While these shows were about happily married couples, the shows did not portray the sexual intimacy part of the marriage. At that time, society maintained the privacy of that part of a marriage relationship. Usually, if shown at all, couples’ bedrooms had two twin beds separated by a nightstand, with no double bed to provide even a hint of sensuality. Today, however, similar

situations are portrayed on TV much differently. Not only are couples portrayed in a double bed, but often the couples are adulterous and even same-sex couples, and usually it takes little imagination to figure out what is happening. And, unfortunately, it seems most of society is accepting this this behavior without question. How did this happen? I blame it on what I call social autocorrecting. By repetitively showing things just beyond the boundaries of accepted morality, media, particularly television and movies, have been able to get society to gradually expand what is considered acceptable. It happened so slowly that, for the most part, it went unnoticed. Today sexual immorality is routinely portrayed as acceptable behavior by most mass media. While society’s sense of morality and what is

acceptable may have changed, God’s has not! Hebrews 13:8 tells us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Malachi 3:6 says, “For I am the Lord, I do not change.” And James 1:17 includes “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no change or shadow of turning.” So things that Scripture indicates are prohibited are still unacceptable to God. Unfortunately, it appears that social autocorrect is also affecting some congregations of God’s people, such as those becoming known as “LGBTQaffirming” churches. These congregations seem to be using God’s commandments on love to justify tolerating behavior that other commandments prohibit. And while Jesus confirmed that love for God and love for your neighbor are

the greatest commandments (Matthew 22:36–40 NIV), He did not say they are the only commandments. In fact, He said, “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:40 NIV). So, what better way to love God than by committing to follow ALL His commandments, and repenting and changing our ways when we stumble? Buying into social autocorrect can have eternal consequences. So, knowing that society often accepts beliefs that are contrary to God’s word, we must always be on our guard. By studying the Word of God continuously (2 Timothy 2:15), we can spot and guard against worldly social autocorrect. Paid for by Rick Osburn, member Northside Church of Christ

Willie Clyde Blackwell Willie Clyde Blackwell, lovingly known as “Papa” to his family, passed away on September 29, 2026, at the age of 98. He leaves behind nearly a century of stories, laughter, hard work, and memories that will continue to be shared for generations. Born on September 2, 1928, Clyde lived a long and remarkable life. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. He was a farmer, businessman, master electrician, cowboy, and bronc rider—a true jack-of-all-trades who understood the value of a hard day’s work. Clyde was a cowboy at heart and had a lifelong love for horses. He also loved his tractors and lawn mowers, and there wasn’t much he couldn’t build, fix, operate, or figure out. He was also a storyteller through and through. After 98 years, Clyde had a story for just about everything—and he was always ready to tell one. Most of those stories were true. The others may have simply gotten a little better with every telling. His sense of humor and jokester personality could bring laughter to a room, and those stories will be repeated by his family for many years to come. Above all else, loved his family and was deeply loved in return. He was the kind of man whose life touched far more people than could ever be counted, and he was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Clyde’s legacy lives on through his daughters, Mary Ann Keily, Donna Kay Kuykendall, and Janet Weeks; his four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandsons. Five generations stand as a testament to a life well lived and a family well loved. Ninety-eight years is an extraordinary lifetime, yet somehow it still never feels like enough when someone means so much. The cowboy may have taken his final ride, but his stories aren’t finished being told. Willie Clyde Blackwell will be deeply missed, forever loved, and remembered for generations to come. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home. To share a memory or leave an online condolence please visit www.coopersorrells.com

Billy John Gaither Billy John Gaither, 73, of Honey Grove, Texas, passed away on September 28, 2026, at Kindred Hospital in Arlington, surrounded by his beloved family. He was born on July 20, 1953, in Bennington, Oklahoma, to RB Gaither and Cora Lee Gaither. Hard work and family were a part of Billy’s life from an early age. Growing up in a family of eight, Billy and his family, along with a cousin, would travel by panel truck from the Texas-Oklahoma area to California, where they worked harvesting peaches, walnuts, and other crops. Along the way, his father worked in cotton gins to help make ends meet. These early experiences helped shape the strong work ethic and devotion to family that Billy carried throughout his life. Billy began working at just 11 years old, washing dishes at Sherrer’s Restaurant in Durant. He later worked at a Good Luck Oil Company (GloCo) service station. After graduating from high school, Billy went straight to work for the City of Dallas at the age of 17. He remained with the City for 30 years. On June 25, 1976, Billy married the love of his life, Dale Gwynn Edington, in Dallas, Texas. Together, Billy and Dale shared 50 years of marriage, building a life filled with family, love, and many cherished memories. Billy had always dreamed of living in the country, with a pond and a horse of his own. He eventually fulfilled that dream and, for 13 years, made the drive to Dallas for work so he and his family could enjoy the country life he had long wanted. He continued making that commute until reaching retirement age. Billy enjoyed watching westerns, college football, and NASCAR races, as well as listening to music and spending time fishing. He also enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with his family. Country living suited Billy well, and he found happiness spending time outdoors and caring for the animals at his place. Above all, Billy treasured his family. He especially enjoyed family gatherings, where he could spend time reminiscing and sharing stories with his brothers and cousins. His grandchildren brought him tremendous joy, and he loved attending their activities and being a part of the special moments in their lives. Billy is preceded in death by his parents, RB and Cora Lee Gaither; his granny, Nora Elliott; and brothers, James RB Gaither and Doyle Gaither. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Dale Gaither; daughters, Linda Rabe and husband Andy of Pecan Gap, and Amy Gaither of Honey Grove; grandchildren, Leilani Gaither, Kidder Bob Rabe, and Dally Rabe; brothers, Tommy Gaither and wife Molly, Danny Gaither and wife Julie; sister, Janie Bell; sister-in-law, Gail Bielefeldt and husband Greg; brother-in-law, Wilton Edington and wife Evelyn; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 5, 2026, at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Honey Grove. Following the funeral service, Billy was laid to rest at Allens Point Cemetery. Members of the 52nd Engineers with a locomotive at Périgueux, France, during World War I. Courtesy Office of History, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Photo found by ChatGPT. - Walter Short had charge of one of the trains as conductor. They were under military discipline, it was true, yet railroad orders had to be such that the train crews from America could at once interpret them, and expedite the work of getting the long freight trains, with their American box cars and flat cars, over the lines in the shortest time possible.” (Obituary from the Bonham Herald, May 22, 1939). Walter served in France for 14 months. After the war Walter Short came back to Bonham where he worked for the Texas & Pacific Railroad. He died May 20, 1939, being stricken just as he was getting ready to take out a local

taken over the French roads. He has often told how they ran in France - troop trains that hauled thousands and thousands of men and munitions and horses to the various

freight train from Sherman for Fort Worth. He was “called by the Great Superintendent to make his last run to that Terminal that has no junction points, no red boards to be turned, no trains to meet; the name of which is Eternity.” His funeral was widely attended and at his burial at Willow Wild Cemetery the Masonic Lodge conducted the burial ceremony and a number of the Legionaires attended the funeral. “Among railroad circles, where he was best known, Mr. Short was loved and appreciated. He was considered one of Bonham's best citizens and his untimely and sudden passing was received with a shock here.” Obituary from the Bonham Daily Favorite, May 20, 1939.

precious hymn right in the midst of that huge storm in his life. As I now reflect upon our week of revival services, many of us have received “showers of blessing.” Our subsequent rainfall since then has constantly reminded me to what God has showered down upon us. Hearts were softened, prayers were lifted, souls were saved, and many of us have rekindled our faith. Even as I write this, another shower has begun. May we continue to experience His “showers of

blessing” as we move forward in His kingdom work for His glory. Another verse that inspired this hymn is Hosea 10:12 which says, “Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap in mercy, break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the LORD, till He comes and rains righteousness.” “Mercy drops round us are falling, but for the showers we plead.” For His Glory, Lyn and Lissa

Showers Of Blessing

Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas Ezekiel 34:26 promises, “I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing.” This verse inspired the writing of an old hymn called, “Showers of blessing.” This hymn was written by Daniel Webster Whittle after losing an arm during the Civil War’s Battle of Vicksburg. While in the hospital healing, he began reading the New Testament leading him to give his life to Christ. Out of that experience, he wrote this

This time of year is so beautiful. The trees turn beautiful colors, the pumpkins are ready to be harvested. All the beautiful colors of the fall are found in our foods and our surroundings. We are a blessed people as believers in Christ. It is a time to be Thankful. Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known unto God. I Thessalonians 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Be sure to look for others who have needs and help them. The Bible admonishes us to do this especially for those of the household of God.

Look out for each other in the church of God and care for one another. Pray for one another. That is the best gift we can give each other. We need to go to God in times of trouble, depression and discouragement. Go to Christ in prayer with your concerns. Invite Christ into your life and situations. Hardship will defeat you if you try to handle life on your own. Together with Christ we can all make it. Go to Christ and He will deliver you. Have faith over fear. Let us look into our hearts and confess to God that we are trying to live life on our own. I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins,

and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Start today to look also for others in need. Pray to God when you are afflicted. James 5:13 Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is he merry? Let him sing Psalms. You will receive a harvest of blessings by going to God with all your cares. Jesus loves you, He really cares. His death, burial and resurrection in three days is proof of the love of Jesus. Jesus came to give us a more blessed life. Ask Him to be in your life and to guide you into all truth. Your life will be filled with a harvest of blessings. Pastor Bernard Antonis, Jr. Gospel Light Baptist Church Cooper, Texas

What The Law Of Moses Could Not Do!

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

Many would like, it seems, to go back to the Law of Moses in many religious areas. Those who claim to be Jews, would have us think that they are still under the Moseical

Law. Some would like to enjoy some things from the Old Law, while still having the blessings of Christ. Consider what the Law of Moses was unable to do. It could NOT TAKE AWAY SINS. In Hebrews, we find that the sacrifices under that law “can never take away

sin” (Heb. 10:11). Concerning the New Covenant “when God would take away our sins” (Rom. 11:27). There was NO REDEMPTION under the Old Covenant. Only in the blood of Christ can we “obtain eternal redemption” (Heb. 9:11-12). Under the Old Testament there was NO ETERNAL INHERITANCE. Christ “is the mediator of the New Testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the First Testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal in heritance” (Heb. 9:15). ETERNAL LIFE is not in the Old Testament, but the New Testament by the sacrifice and blood of Jesus Christ. This eternal life is “the gift of God” “through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom. 6:13). The Old Law was “nailed to the cross” of Jesus. It was “abolished in his (Christ’s) flesh” (Eph. 2:15). We will not be judged by the Old Testament, but we will be judged by all that Jesus Christ has said (John 12:48).

Bonham Floral & Green House A Thank You from Fannin County Little Miss 2025, Haven Maidens Being Fannin County Little Miss 2025 has been such a special experience! I am so thankful and honored that I had the opportunity to wear this crown and represent the wonderful people of Fannin County. This year has given me so many fun memories, new friendships, and opportunities to be a part of the community I love. I have loved attending events, meeting new people, and representing Fannin County everywhere I went. I have learned that wearing a crown is about so much more than how it sparkles—it is about kindness, serving others, and being proud of where you come from. Thank you to everyone who supported me, encouraged me, and made me feel so special throughout my year as Little Miss. I will always be grateful for this experience and the memories I have made. It has truly been an honor to serve as your Fannin County Little Miss 2025. With love, Haven Maidens
