Letters to the Editor When I was a small boy, my Dad took my brother and me to a house on Park Ave., in Bonham. Inside the old house Dr Jack Saunders inoculated us with the smallpox vaccine. It was a little scary but all was well. That memory got me to think about vaccines and science in general. For example George Washington had his troops to take the vaccine during our War for Independence. Louis Pasteur discovered the Rabies vaccine. Marie Curie discovered Radioactivity that led to Radiation which has saved many millions from Cancer. Alexander Fleming came up with Penicillin. Dr Jenner solved the smallpox terror while other scientist learned that flea bites infected people with the Bubonic Plague. Blood letting was finally stopped as a cure for almost everything. Dr Lister came with Antiseptics. In the 1950’s President Eisenhower ordered all children to take the Polio Vaccine that Dr. Jonas Salk had discovered. When I was a kid, Measles, Mumps and Whooping Cough were common. Today all those diseases have effective vaccines, as well as Diptheria.

In the military when I was in bootcamp in 1969 everybody was required to take numerous shots and did not even know what they were.

We simply trusted in science, and why not. Tuberculosis had been conquered along with many others such as yellow fever. Flu shots and Pneumonia shots are available in many drug stores.

When the Wright Brothers flew the first airplane it eventually led to space flight. If Rudolph Diesel had not created the diesel engine we would still have coal fired steam engines. Edison gave the light bulb. Countless doctors and scientists have given us a better and healthier life.

The Covid vaccines are just the latest examples of this. I will not wrap myself in the flag or shake a bible about it.

All I offer is simply hard facts and good common sense.

not a club.

The Fannin County Master Gardener Association was established in 1998.

Members are certified as Master Gardeners after attending a minimum 50 hours of college level training in horticulture, water, soil, conservation and more. We work under the Texas A&M Agrilife University and Extension Service. Following training, a trainee must complete hours of volunteer work in the county. Each year after training requires more volunteer hours and continuing education classes to remain certified.

We host an annual Home, Lawn and Garden Expo, present seminars and programs on horticultural topics, and provide speakers for other organizations. If you are interested in learning more about Master Gardeners, please call the Extension Office at 903-583-7453.

The truth we look at today is that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. His purpose in doing so was to reveal the Father more perfectly, to show us the Heavenly Father and to become our sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary. This was not an

Presentation of award to Chris Moore, Fannin County Dispatcher: Judge Moore spoke of awards having been recently given to Law Enforcement Officers and how it is good to recognize the excellent work some do. He then asked all the Law Enforcement Officers present in the court to stand for a round of applause of appreciation for all they do for the county. Sheriff Mark Johnson then gave an award of recognition to Dispatcher Chris Moore whose swift competent action contributed to the capture of a bank robber within an hour of having robbed a Leonard Bank on August 20, 2021.

Discussion, consideration and action to approve Proclamation stating October 2021 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Fannin County: Judge Moore read the Proclamation stating October as being the Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Fannin County. The full Proclamation can be read on the County’s website. The purpose of this Proclamation is to encourage all citizens to increase their awareness of the problem and work to prevent family violence across the state of Texas. Motion was made

by Commissioner Magness, seconded by Commissioner Lane and passed to approve the Proclamation.

7. Discussion regarding EMS monthly report for September 2021: Judge Moore stated work may have prevented Chief Scott Ridling from being available to read the report, no action taken.

8. Discussion, consideration and action regarding burn ban for Fannin County: Judge Moore commented on the prescribed burn occurring around the Caddo Grasslands and Coffee Mill Lake and noted that Fannin County Emergency Management Coordinator Troy Hudson

He also commented on how Channel 12 incorrectly reported that we were in a burn ban and wanted to make it known that Fannin County is currently “not in a burn ban”.

Discussion regarding Fannin County Regional Trails Master Plan: Duke Monson with the Fannin County Equestrian Trails Association spoke about a plan that was approved to be created three years ago having finally been completed. He noted that the plan will be on the County’s website for all those who are interested in viewing it. He then went on to explain that the plan has the features that are in the county today i.e.: natural resources, population growth, etc. and notes that the groups that would benefit from the plan are hikers, horse equestrians, bicyclers, kayakers and canoeists. He further stated this plan is for the future and could possibly take 10 to 20 years before it comes to fruition. He concluded by saying the end of the plan lists the different agencies that could be sources of funding and how to go forward with the plan. When he asked if there were any questions, there was some discussion regarding different aspects of the plan including the utilization of abandoned rail lines and involving possible future commercial rail lines.

Discussion, consideration and action regarding Courthouse Restoration: Judge Moore read the update as follows: EXTERIOR – Moved masonry scaffold to North side; Patch, point up and install veneers on North; Received additional entry stone to install on West entry; Installing additional cornice on East and South; Still awaiting on shipment of arched panel for each entry to complete Cornice and final roof sections; Installing veneer stone along South for base of building; Completed all insulation of HVAC piping in mechanical yard. INTERIOR – Completing drywall installation throughout this week; Installing veneer plaster, completing this week; Painting walls on the 3rd level; Completing the window installation this week; Installing wood trim; Installing Fire Alarm system and security wiring.

11. Discussion and report of monies collected by Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 office for September 2021: Judge Moore read the total amount collected was $5,957.00.

12. Discussion, consideration and action regarding KFYN Radio Tower contract for bare land lease: Commissioner Self explained that as a result of his lease amount being increased, Judge Carter requested he put this item on the agenda.

Judge Carter then spoke of the tower East of TMC Hospital and West of Precinct 4 that has been there since 1948 and how KFYN has owned the tower and leased the land from the county. He continued that since he has owned the radio station, there has been a three-year lease on the land which recently expired September 30, 2021. He said he was notified that at the end of his three-year lease, his rent would be going up from $200.00 to $1,050.00 a month for a two-year lease. Due to that increase, he said instead of renewing his lease, He explained the reason he wanted to address the court was about the tower still located on the property. He said he could have it torn down or Fannin County could have it for free if they have use of it. After some discussion it was decided the court could take one week to decide whether they could make use of the tower or notify Judge Carter to arrange to have it removed. A motion was made by Commissioner Lane to table this item till next week, seconded

by Commissioner Lackey and passed.

13. Discussion, consideration and action to approve leases for belly dump trailers for Precincts 2 and 3; $500.00 per month for 6 months beginning 10/18/2021 and 10/20/2021: Commissioner Magness spoke about how this is the same thing that has been done previously. He then made the motion to approve the leases and motion was seconded

by Commissioner Self and passed.

14. Discussion, consideration and action regarding custodial assistance for Fannin County: Judge Moore explained how Melvin, the custodian, retired last week and this was about

obtaining custodial services for the county buildings.

Fannin County Purchasing Agent Michelle Case, then spoke via Zoom on the custodial service business bids she received. It was noted that Max Pro Enterprise’s bid was $1,700.00 per month for three county buildings as opposed to the other company’s bid of $2,250 per month. She said she had received many favorable references for Max Pro and recommended accepting their bid. After some discussion, Commissioner Magness made the motion to utilize Max Pro Enterprises for the custodial assistance until further notice. Commissioner Lane seconded the motion and the motion passed.

15. Discussion, consideration and action to set a public hearing on November 16, 2021 at 8:50 a.m. to hear comments regarding a Special Exception application regarding setbacks in the Bois d’Arc Lake 5,000 ft. buffer; Property ID#78979: Fannin County Development Services Director Di Hopkins explained how this was about bringing a property into compliance that had been found to be non-compliant with the Bois d’Arc Lake regulations.

After some discussion, Commissioner Lane made the motion to set the hearing with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion and motion passed.

16. Discussion, consideration and action to approve payment of bills: Motion was made, seconded and passed to approve payment of bills.

17. Discussion, consideration and action regarding the Fannin County Declaration of Disaster Proclamation for Covid-19: Judge Moore explained how this was regarding the addition of Governor Abbott’s order against the vaccine mandate which was stated as: “no vaccine mandate by any entity in Texas.” Commissioner Lackey made the motion to approve the adding of the order GA40, to the Proclamation.

Commissioner Magness seconded the motion and motion passed.

18. Discussion, consideration and action regarding the Covid-19 Response and Continuation of Operations Plan for Fannin County: Judge Moore stated this was again in response to the addition of Governor Abbott’s GA40 order. Motion was made by Commissioner Mag-

Yukon gold potatoes, diced 1 c. shredded sharp cheddar cheese ½ c. sour cream 1 tsp. salt (more if needed) ½ tsp black pepper (more if needed) ½ tsp. celery salt

Toppings: Thinly sliced green onions, extra grated cheddar cheese, extra cooked crumbled bacon, sour cream.

Heat a large stockpot over medium-high heat.

Add diced bacon and cook until crispy, stirring occasionally.

Transfer the bacon to a separate plate. You can use bacon drippings if desired or use butter at this stage.

Add onion and saute for additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft.

Stir in the garlic and saute for an extra 1-2 minutes, until fragrant. Stir the flour into the mixture, and saute for additional 1 minute to cook the flour. Then stir in the stock until combined, followed by the warm milk and potatoes.

Once the potatoes are nice and soft, stir in the cheddar cheese and sour cream, salt, pepper and celery salt. Stir in the cooked bacon bits.

Serve warm, garnished with your toppings.

FBI Releases Statistics for Law Enforcement Officers Assaulted and Killed in the Line of Duty

Press Release - According to statistics reported to the FBI, 59 police officers were killed in the line of duty from January 1, 2021 to September 30, 2021. This marks a 51 percent increase in the number of police officers killed when compared to the same period last year.

Nationally, 60,105 law enforcement officers were assaulted while performing their duties in 2020. These assaults were reported to the FBI by 9,895 law enforcement agencies. Based on these reports, there were 4,071 more officers assaulted in 2020 than the 56,034 assaults reported in 2019.

In an interview during Police Week events last week, FBI Director Christopher Wray reflected on the sacrifices of the Bureau’s law enforcement partners, who risk their safety to protect the public. “We are looking at now 59 officers or agents murdered in the line of duty this year.

That’s an over 50 percent increase from last year.

That basically translates to every five days--more often than every five days in this country--an officer is murdered in the line of duty. And that’s totally unacceptable, and it’s a tragedy and it needs attention,” Wray said.

In FBI Dallas’s area of responsibility, four police officers have been killed in the line of duty for 2021. This includes

a deputy sheriff and sergeant from the Concho County Sheriff’s Office, a sergeant from the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, and a Dallas Police Officer who was assisting a motorist. Overall, seven police officers in Texas were killed in the line of duty during 2021. This surpasses the five police officers feloniously killed in 2020.

“The statistics released this week are a stark reminder of the dangerous work done by law enforcement every day,” said FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge Matthew DeSarno. “The FBI values our partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. We will continue to assist and offer resources when called upon.”

Sunday Morning Re-take Hello everyone!

We had a wonderful service in God’s house Sunday morning!

The spirit and fellowship were beautiful! The Bible tells us in Matthew 4:18-20: 18 And Jesus, walking by

the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make

you fishers of men.

20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

What the Lord said to Peter and Andrew in verse 19 is what He commands of us. He calls us to go those regions beyond, and be a witness for Him, to help others to come to the saving knowledge of Jesus

Christ. We don’t come to the kingdom of God by accident, someone helped us get there.

The proceeds from the concert will be benefitting the South Central Texas Kidney Fund and it is hoped the concert will call attention to the help that is available for those who can benefit from the Hope Health Live organization.

Tickets for the event can be bought in advance online at www.outhousetickets.com for $10.00 or for $15.00 on the 30th. Advance tickets can also be obtained from Jennifer at the Creative Arts Center.

Great Days of Service Volunteers improved Trade Days Vendor Spots

Bonham Trade Days are managed by the Kiwanis Club of Bonham. Revenue from this event goes to help youth groups in Bonham and Fannin County. Kiwanis also gives scholarships to Bonham High School seniors.

In addition, Kiwanis sponsors a special scholarship program for sophomores throughout Fannin County.

Vendors bring useful, unique, and unusual wares to Trade Days. There are food vendors as well. Kiwanis appreciates the many shoppers at Trade Days. These same shoppers also go to stores, restaurants, and gas stations in Bonham.

Largemouth Bass are good on diving crankbaits, Texasrigged plastic worms, football jigs, and bladed spinners near rocky areas, docks, and flats.

Crappie are good on minnows and black/chartreuse jigs around brush piles, docks, and bridge pilings. White bass are moving fast. Troll constantly to keep your bait moving over structures. Stripers are fair, not seeing quite as many as early summer. Catfishing is good on this lake.

Texoma GOOD. Water lightly stained; 70 degrees; 2.08 feet low. Seagulls have migrated to the area pointing out the schooling fish. Striped bass are producing bigger fish on topwaters and in 20-60 feet over wind blown points.

Crappie are good on minnows and jigs near boathouses, timber near a channel, and brush piles. Catfish are good on earthworms, chicken liver, and live bait.

The white bass and hybrids are good over humps and flats using silver or white slabs and chartreuse swimbaits. Crappie are fair with minnows working brush piles and timber in 16-25 feet of water. Catfish are good on punch bait and chicken liver.

Explanatory Statements for the November 2, 2021 Constitutional Amendment Election

Proposition Number 1 (HJR 143) HJR 143 proposes a constitutional amendment expanding the circumstances in which a professional sports team charitable foundation may conduct raffles to raise money for the foundation’s charitable purposes. The proposed amendment would allow professional sports team charitable foundations of organizations sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association or the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association to hold charitable raffles at rodeo events.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the professional sports team charitable foundations of organizations sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association or the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association to conduct charitable raffles at rodeo venues.”

Proposition Number 2 (HJR 99) HJR 99 proposes a constitutional amendment allowing the legislature to authorize a county to issue bonds or notes to finance the development or redevelopment of an unproductive, underdeveloped, or blighted area within the county and to pledge for repayment of those bonds or notes increases in property tax revenues imposed on property in the area by the county. The Texas Constitution gives the legislature the power to authorize an incorporated city or town to issue such bonds or notes but does not expressly give the legislature the power to grant that same authority to counties. The proposed amendment also provides that a county that issues bonds or notes for transportation improvements may not pledge for the repayment of those bonds or notes more than 65 percent of the increases in ad valorem tax revenues each year, and a county may not use proceeds from the bonds or notes to finance the construction, operation, maintenance, or acquisition of rights-of-way of a toll road.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment authorizing a county to finance the development or redevelopment of transportation or infrastructure in unproductive, underdeveloped, or blighted areas in the county.”

Proposition Number 3 (SJR 27) SJR 27 proposes a constitutional amendment barring the State of Texas or a political subdivision from enacting, adopting, or issuing a statute, order, proclamation, decision, or rule that prohibits or limits religious services. The proposed amendment would apply to religious services, including those conducted in churches, congregations, and places of worship, in the state by a religious or-

ganization established to support and serve the propagation of a sincerely held religious belief.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment to prohibit this state or a political subdivision of this state from prohibiting or limiting religious services of religious organizations.”

Proposition Number 4 (SJR 47) SJR 47 proposes a constitutional amendment changing certain eligibility requirements for a justice of the Supreme Court, a judge of the Court of Criminal Appeals, a justice of a court of appeals, and a district judge.

The proposed amendment provides that a person is eligible to serve on the Supreme Court if the person, among other qualifications, is licensed to practice law in Texas; is a resident of Texas at the time of election; has been either a practicing lawyer licensed in Texas for at least ten years or a practicing lawyer licensed in Texas and a judge of a state court or county court established by the legislature for a combined total of at least ten years; and during that time has not had the person’s license to practice law revoked, suspended, or subject to a probated suspension. The same eligibility requirements would apply to a judge of the Court of Criminal Appeals and to a justice of a court of appeals.

The proposed amendment further provides that to be eligible for appointment or election as a district judge, a person must be a resident of Texas; be licensed to practice law in Texas; and have been a practicing lawyer or a judge of a court in Texas, or both combined, for eight years preceding the person’s election, during which time the person’s license to practice law has not been revoked, suspended, or subject to a probated suspension.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment changing the eligibility requirements for a justice of the supreme court, a judge of the court of criminal appeals, a justice of a court of appeals, and a district judge.”

Proposition Number 5 (HJR 165) HJR 165 proposes a constitutional amendment allowing the State Commission on Judicial Conduct (SCJC) to accept complaints or reports, conduct investigations, and take any other authorized action with respect to a candidate for a state judicial office. Currently, the Texas Constitution only permits the SCJC to take such actions as to persons holding a judicial office.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment providing additional powers to the State Commission on Judicial Conduct with respect to candidates for judicial office.”

Proposition Number 6 (SJR 19) SJR 19 proposes a constitutional amendment establishing that residents of certain facilities have the right to designate an essential caregiver with whom the facility may not prohibit in-person visitation. The proposed amendment would apply to a nursing facility, assisted living facility, intermediate care facility for individuals with an intellectual disability, residence providing home and community-based services, or state supported living center. The proposed amendment also would authorize the legislature to provide guidelines for these facilities to follow in establishing essential caregiver visitation policies and procedures.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment establishing a right for residents of certain facilities to designate an essential caregiver for in-person visitation.”

Proposition Number 7 (HJR 125) HJR 125 proposes a constitutional amendment permitting a person who is 55 years of age or older at the time of death of their spouse who is receiving a limitation on school district property taxes on their residence homestead on the basis of a disability to continue receiving the limitation while the property remains the surviving spouse’s residence homestead.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment to allow the surviving spouse of a person who is disabled to receive a limitation on the school district ad valorem taxes on the spouse’s residence homestead if the spouse is 55 years of age or older at the time of the person’s death.”

Proposition Number 8 (SJR 35) SJR 35 proposes a constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to exempt from ad valorem taxation all or part of the market value of the residence homestead of the surviving spouse of a member of the United States armed services who is killed or fatally injured in the line of duty. The Texas Constitution provides a property tax exemption to the surviving spouse of a member of the armed services who is killed in action, but the current exemption does not include members of the military who die during their service due to injuries sustained that are not combat-related.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of all or part of the market value of the residence homestead of the surviving spouse of a member of the armed services of the United States who is killed or fatally injured in the line of duty.”

SANDRA JOAN BROWN WOOLSEY Sandra Joan Brown Woolsey, 70, of Anna, Texas, passed away on September 26, 2021.

She was born on December 3, 1950 in McCamey, TX, to Laverne Renshaw Brown and George Brown. Sandra worked as a Distribution Manager for Sears & Roebuck, Mervyn’s, and Wal-Mart.

Sandra grew up in McCamey and enjoyed horseback riding and pitching for her high-school softball team. She loved to spend her weekends outdoors with friends, trail-riding and four-wheeling. Sandra was widely known for her friendly and sweet personality.

She married Thomas Woolsey in 1969 and lived in McKinney, later moving to her property in Anna with her two daughters where she built her home, doing much of the work herself.

Sandra prided herself on teaching her daughters to be strong, independent women.

Sandra is survived by daughters, Sandy Woolsey Adams and Dusti Woolsey Diggs; grandchildren, Dakota, Jeremiah and Jared Adams; siblings, Wayne, Gary, Calvin, and Deborah Brown.

Sandra Woolsey is preceded in death by her parent, Laverne and George Brown, and brother, James Brown.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013.

Bonham- Billy Ellis Perry, age 78 of Bonham, Texas was born on November 22, 1942 in Grayson County, Texas to Winston Leon and Edna Mae (Wright) Perry. He passed away on Friday, October 15, 2021 during his stay at Beacon Hill Nursing Facility in Denison, TX. Billy worked at several service station in Lubbock, TX before settling in Fannin County and working for the City of Bonham Street Department. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Bonham-Graveside services for Joy Nell (Womack) Minnick, age 83 of Bonham, TX were held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Willow Wild Cemetery.

Visitation was held held prior to the service under the pavilion from 1:30 pm to 2:00pm. Joy passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at Texoma Medical Center in Bonham, TX. Joy was born in Delba, TX on February 12, 1938 to Virgil Venus Womack and Ola Mae (Gibson) Womack. She married James C. Minnick on June 29, 1957 in Durant, Ok. Joy was a mother, sister, and military wife who followed her beloved husband, James, to many locales around the world including Air Force bases in Wichita Falls, TX; Fort Worth, TX; Abilene, TX; Columbus, MS, Columbus, OH, and Fayetteville, NC and internationally, in Paris, France and Luzon Island, Philippines. Her gift was making each place that their family lived a comfortable and welcoming home.

After her husband’s retirement, they moved to Bonham, TX. She worked at the Fannin County Hospital as a dietary aide, which she enjoyed. She loved to read cookbooks and took pride in cooking for her family. She was always excited to get seasonal flowers to decorate her front porch, which was always beautiful and colorful to reflect the seasons of the year.

Joy is of the Baptist faith.

Bonham- Bertie Lou (Dodson) Sewell, age 86, of Bonham, Texas was born to George Luther and Mary Ellen (Butler) Dodson on October 1, 1935 on “Raggety Ann” Lane near Nobility Community located in Fannin County, TX. Bertie gained her wings and joined her heavenly father on Monday, October 18, 2021 while at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Bertie was a 1954 Bonham High School graduate. She married Loran Leeman Sewell on June 17, 1956 at Portland Methodist Church in Bailey, Texas.

Bertie was a woman of many talents, she managed Bewely’s in Commerce, Texas and worked for Kwik Chek in Ector, Texas where she could cook up a good meal.

Bertie was no stranger to work you could always find her working along side her husband Leeman as they operated KC Foods in Bells, Texas; JB White, Sassy Rags Children Clothing Store, and many family visitations at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham, Texas.

Bertie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.

You can remember Bertie not only as a loving, strong, confident, and beautiful woman but also from the greetings, hugs, and smiles that she could light up any room with. Bertie will be greatly missed and forever loved. She

“Supply chain snarls are likely to persist well into 2022, and so will elevated inflation. The latest producer price index data for August was up 20% year-over-year, while the consumer price index increased just 5.2%,” Dan Kowalski, vice president of CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange division, said.

“So, it’s clear that many businesses are passing only a small portion of those cost increases on to the final consumer. We expect that will change in the months ahead, and many businesses will raise prices.”

The issues plaguing global supply chains could limit the availability of critical crop inputs, noted Kenneth Scott Zuckerberg, CoBank lead grain and farm supply economist.

With a steady need for crop inputs like seed and chemicals, farm suppliers are well positioned for a strong fourth consecutive season, Zuckerberg wrote.

But the raw inputs for many fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and insecticides are manufactured overseas.

If those are unavailable or in short supply, agricultural retailer and farm cooperative profits could decrease considerably.

Animal protein sectors like beef, pork and poultry have not escaped post-pandemic issues either.

“Domestic supply chains continue to deal with disruptions as food service and retail outlets contend for availability,” CoBank Lead

Animal Protein Economist Brian Earnest said. “The pressure has been twofold, as elevated domestic consumption conflicted with both rising international opportunity and tight beginning stocks.”

On dairy farms, rising feed and construction costs and labor shortages will keep the dairy cow herd constrained, even though domestic and export demand continues to

be strong, CoBank analysts said.

“Farmers, ranchers and businesses across agriculture were beginning to get back on their feet after the nosedive in profits at the start of COVID-19 pandemic,” Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) Associate Director of Commodity and Regulatory Activities Brant Wilbourn said. “But now we’re starting to see some of the ramifications of factory closures across our supply chains, and analysts are predicting these issues will continue throughout 2022. So, we’re not out of the woods yet.”

Consumers generally believe that when food and clothing prices go up, it’s because farmers and ranchers have raised their prices, Wilbourn said. But farmers and ranchers are more likely to see their profit margins shrink even more during these times.

“I’d caution people to remember when they see higher prices at the grocery store in coming months that farmers and ranchers are price-takers. They don’t direct the prices they receive for their crops and livestock.

Those are directed by market factors like labor or material shortages at the packaging plant and what processors are willing to pay them,” he said.

“So, just know that farmers and ranchers are suffering along with you right now.

They’re facing higher input costs and lower prices for their products, and they’re stuck in the middle.”

NORTH TEXAS Soil moisture remained very short to short for some counties and adequate to surplus for other counties.

Rainfall amounts ranged from 1-3 inches around the district. The moisture was needed but limited fieldwork. Temperatures ranged from lows in the 50s to highs in the 80s. Pasture and rangeland conditions were very poor to good. Summer grasses had mostly shut down in drier areas. Winter wheat was planted but had not yet emerged. Livestock were in good condition. MILLER GROVE -Two-time State competitor Lindsey Mauppin, a junior, won the girls individuals title to lead Dodd City to its first district cross country team championship since resuming the sport.

Autumn Brown finished third, Addyson Chaney took fourth and Kaylen Atchley, a State track qualifier last spring as a freshman in the 400m, garnered eighth in the 23-1A girls varsity race on Oct. 13 at Miller Grove for the Lady Hornets who advanced as a team to regional cross country competition for the third-consecutive year.

Other advancing members of Dodd City’s girls varsity

team include: Zoie Hobbs, Natally Medina and Emma Jenkins.

Ector also individually advanced Jael Grijalva who took eighth and Tristan Kenas who garnered ninth to girls regional competition.

It equated the third-straight regional advance for Lindsey Mauppin and secondconsecutive for Brown, Atchley, Hobbs and Grijalva.

Meanwhile, Jaden Mahar placed sixth, Caleb Munger garnered eighth and Brody Mauppin took 10th, as Dodd

City’s boys finished as the district runner-up and as such advanced to the regional cross country competition also for a third-straight year.

Other advancing Hornets include: Ethan Barnard, Gus Lillie, Jackson Neely and Charlie Wild.

It equated the fourthstraight regional advance for Brody Mauppin -- the last three coming while competing for Dodd City.

It marked the secondconsecutive for Mahar and Barnard.

The Region III-1A meets will occur on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Lynn Creek Park at Joe Pool Lake at Grand Prairie.

The girls will race starting at 10 a.m., followed 30 minutes later by the boys.

By Rich Hilliard Defending Class 1A State girls champion Dodd City narrowly made the 2021-22 Top25 pre-season rankings by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

The Lady Hornets placed at No 22, having graduated or otherwise had depart all but two members of their 202021 starting line-up -which went 32-0 last

season to claim their first State title in the sport.

Perennial champion Nazareth, which Dodd City defeated 30-21 in the title tilt on March 10, headed the 1A poll.

Huckabay, which now includes former Dodd City standout scoring guard Rion Baccus on its roster, garnered the No. 3 ranking in the 1A girls poll which also included: No. 7. Slidell, No. 8.

Chireno, No. 14. Saltillo

and No. 21. Neches.

The Lady Hornets held Huckabay to no made field goals in a regional semifinals win, defeated Saltillo in the Region III-1A final and topped Neches in the State semifinals en route last winter to winning their title.

Defending champion Brownfield led the 3A girls poll which also included No. 6 Gunter, a District 11-3A rival for

Bonham and Leonard.

The Hornets again reached the area round last winter, before having their postseason cut short in a rematch with Slidell, the 2019 1A State

champion and a State finalist in 2020 and 2021.

Defending champion Clarendon led the 2A boys poll which also included No. 8. Rivercrest which in the area round cut short Honey Grove’s deepest run in the boys basketball postseason since advancing likewise in 2013 in the then-named 1A Division I playoffs.

San Antonio Cole, also a defending champion, topped the 3A boys poll

which also included: No. 2. Dallas Madison, No. 14. Commerce, No. 17.
