Fannin County Early Voting Information No Voter Turned Away! 07/02/19 (Part 2) Early voting is underway! The Fannin County Elections Administration is proud to announce that the Fannin County Justice Center is open for early voting. Early voting began October 19th and will continue through October 30th. For the first week, the polls will be open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. On Saturday, October 24th, the polls will be open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and on Sunday, October 25th,
from 12:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The following week, October 26th through October 30th, the polling site will be open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM every day. The address for the Justice Center is 2225 N. Center St., Suite 200. On Tuesday, November 3rd, the county will have nine polling locations open. The locations and addresses are listed on page 3. Every voter may vote at whatever location they find convenient. ALL precincts may vote at ALL locations. This will be the first year that Fannin County has been able to implement countywide voting and we are excited. This will also apply for the City of Leonard Bond Election. If you are an eligible voter in the City of Leonard, you may vote on the bond at any location. Other counties that have implemented
countywide voting have seen huge improvements in their voter turnout for all issues. We are hopeful that this will be true for Fannin County as well. For those of us working the polls, this is a gift. We will no longer need to redirect voters to other polling locations if they show up at the wrong polls. There is no wrong poll! They are all the right poll! We are hopeful that all voters will find this new opportunity helpful. Now all you need to do is show up! Jenny Garner, Fannin County Clerk Continued See Early Voting on page 3

There is something profoundly beautiful about accompanying someone you love on their final earthly journey. Witness cremation is not simply about observing a process; it is about love, devotion, and the sacred privilege of being present until the very end. For some families, saying goodbye at a funeral service does not feel like enough. They long for one more moment, one final act of love, and the reassurance that their loved one was never alone. Witness cremation offers families the opportunity to remain close, to offer a final prayer, whisper one last “I love you,” and find peace in knowing they accompanied their loved one as far as this earthly life allows. There is a quiet beauty in that kind of love. The same hands that once held theirs, the same hearts that loved them through life, are there to honor them in death. It is not about the sadness of the moment, but the tenderness of refusing to let their final journey be without the presence of those who loved them most. At Wise Funeral Home, we believe that even in death, love deserves dignity, reverence, and tenderness. Having our own crematory allows us to offer families the opportunity for this deeply personal farewell. Because sometimes the greatest final gift we can give someone we love is simply to be there — until the very end.

Fannin County Witnesses to History: Harry Peyton Steger
5/26/26
A Joint Project of the Sam Rayburn House Historic Site and the Fannin County Historical Commission Celebrating America 250 with Spotlights of Fannin County Citizens Who Participated In or Witnessed Historical Events
Photo from the Cactus Yearbook By Malinda Allison, Fannin County Historical Commission Harry Peyton Steger was born in Tennessee in 1882. His parents were Thomas and Alice Steger. The family came to Bonham 1889 when Harry was 7 years old. His father, a lawyer, was said to be a great lover of books and one of the best read men in the county. Harry graduated from Bonham High School and then attended the University of Texas in 1897 at the age of fifteen years, where he majored in literature and classical languages, was editor of the Cactus yearbook, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He taught Greek and Latin at Mineola and Bonham and studied Sanskrit at Johns Hopkins University before winning a Rhodes Scholarship in 1905, the second Rhodes Scholar from Texas. As a Rhodes Scholar, he attended Oxford University beginning in 1905. He was president of the largest debating club, the Arnold Literary Society. Articles about his time in London were published in English, German and American magazines, including articles on the London slums. Because he wanted to know more about a tramp’s way of life, he became a tramp, walking 250 miles from Queensboro
to London, dependent on backdoor handouts for food and sleeping in parks or under hay lofts or in rural barns. He wrote a series of articles on this experience for magazines. After returning to New York City from London, he became connected with the publisher Doubleday, Page & Company. He became the literary editor of O. Henry (Sidney Porter) and was the administrator of O’Henry’s estate when the short story
writer died, editing the last volume of O. Henry stories. Peyton Steger, as he was known at that time, died suddenly at the age of 30 on January 5, 1913 in New York City of “acute kidney disease.” He is buried in Willow Wild Cemetery. The UT yearbook, the Cactus, wrote in its 1913 edition: “He was the most distinguished graduate that the College of Arts has produced. He was an able scholar and a brilliant man of affairs, but to those of us who knew and loved him he will always remain a charming, impulsive, delightfully human boy.” Walter H. Page of Doubleday wrote: “I have
known no other man who in the same length of time made so many intimate acquaintances in the writing world and who gave his friends so rich a return of helpful companionship . . . I could not undertake to tell you how seriously he is missed . . . by the literary world and by us.”

Press Release - A celebration of faith and family! First Presbyterian Church of Bonham invites the community to its annual Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan worship service on Reformation Sunday, October 25, at 10:00 a.m. The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan is a cherished Presbyterian tradition celebrating Scottish heritage and the bonds of family. The observance originated in the United States during World War II, when the late Rev. Peter Marshall introduced the service at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. The word kirk comes from Scottish meaning “church,” while kirkin’ in this tradition refers to a blessing. The service celebrates the gathering of families in God’s house to worship and give thanks. The colorful tartans displayed during the service symbolize love and unity, while inviting everyone to reflect with gratitude on their own family and cultural heri-
tage. The tartan embodies the unity and affection we share, irrespective of our backgrounds. During our Kirkin' ceremony, we honor our ancestors and current family members, seeking divine guidance and blessings for the days ahead. If you have a kilt, a tartan scarf, or even a plaid shirt— bring it out! If not, don’t worry—come just as you are! Adding to the celebration, the Shields of Honor Pipes and Drums band from Sherman will perform traditional bagpipe and drum music. Following worship, everyone is invited to stay for a potluck lunch. Bring a dish to share if you can, but please join us even if you cannot! With more than 150 years of history in Bonham, First Presbyterian Church, welcomes the entire community to this special celebration of faith, heritage, family, and fellowship. Find us at 818 N. Main or join us online at https://www.facebook.com/FPCBonham

Commissioners Continued from page 6 This agenda item will likely re-appear as an agenda item in the next Commissioners Court as this was a discussion only item. 18. Discussion regarding safety inspection of the Fannin County Justice Center performed by the Texas Association of Counties Risk Management and the County Risk Management – County Auditor. Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple reported on the results of the inspection by TAC.” They were very impressed with the building, they thought it was a very beautiful building, and that the county had done very well with that building. Most of what they found, the hazards that were found, were risks, were hazards that the employees themselves had brought into the building. There was one, exit door. on the secure side of the building that had some wires hanging down, but my understanding, talking to Commissioner Wagner, that’s supposed to be resolved on this change order that we’re working on. There were some unlabeled cleaning supplies in one of the janitorial closets. But they’re chalking that up to we were in the process of moving. The other things were rugs on floors. Actually, I think that was the biggest one that they found, was rugs on floors, and not mats. And they will come periodically. They’re gonna start coming periodically. That is something that we pay for in doing inspections on all of our facilities.” Fannin
County Clerk Jenny Garner responded with a follow-up “I agree that some of these things were brought upon ourselves through not understanding that would be considered to be a safety hazard. Those things will be corrected or have been corrected as quickly as possible. Rugs have not been removed, but they will be removed before the end of the week.” Garner then addressed ongoing issue with the Justice Center “There’s actually two doors that need to have locks on them before Monday, but if we can get one of them done, well, then that will be a huge improvement. It’s got to be done before the election takes place. We’ve got to have it done before November. I’ve been over a year trying to get that done, and it was cited on this report as a security concern. The copying machine cords that I feel are a huge safety issue because I have clerks working there and walking across these cords. That situation was discussed with Crossland, it was discussed with Troy Waggoner. We don’t have outlets where they need to be in order to install a copying machine properly, so we have extension cords run. Those extension cords have been covered with strips now to try to make them where they go across the floor a little bit easier.” John Skotnick, Fannin County Criminal District Attorney addressed the court next regarding the inspection. “I’ve stood inspections for many years. And whenever we had an inspector coming, we knew who they were. We just moved in. Why are we having an inspection? Why didn’t we have it before we moved in?
Wouldn’t that have been as useful? I don’t want TAC in my office anymore. If necessary, I’ll criminally trespass them if that’s what it takes. I want to point out about this inspection that one, we were still moving in. I resent the inspection. As far as whoever inspected from TAC, I want to know what their training or credentials are for doing the inspection, especially for weapons, rugs, breakers, and wiring.” 19. Indigent Healthcare Internal Audit, September 2026 – County Auditor Report Only DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ITEMS: 20. Discussion and possible action regarding going out for the HB3000 Rural Ambulance Grant through the State Comptroller for Fiscal Year 2027; application due date is October 31, 2026 – County Judge. Approved 21. Discussion and possible action regarding approval of changes to the Subdivision Regulations; definitions, plat checklist and Section 4.2.3, maximum number of lots that can be processed with a short plat and when drainage plans are required for short plats and re-plats – Development Services Director. Approved 22. Discussion and possible action to approve adoption of the updated Subdivision Regulations as of October 13, 2026 – Development Services Director. Approved 23. Discussion and possible action to approve Preliminary Plat for Orduna 2, Phase 3 on CR 4875 in Leonard; 23 one plus acre lots on 30.92 acres, Property ID
#R000080330 – Development Services Director. Approved 24. Discussion and possible action regarding upcoming election and approval of additional election judges – County Clerk. Approved 25. Discussion and possible action to approve Order moving the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office postings, notices and citations to the bulletin board located on the first floor of the Courthouse – County Judge. Approved 26. Discussion and possible action to set a date for the Grand Opening of the Fannin County Justice Center – County Judge. Jenny Gardner commented “I just would like to recommend that we hold it in November or later. Okay. Well, I think holding it in November makes perfect sense. I think it needs to be after the election. And I also think that November is a month for gratitude, and quite frankly, we are extremely grateful to have this facility to work in.” The consensus among the Commissioners was that the facility is not completed and ready for a grand opening. Judge Cunningham responded to this sentiment by stating “If we want to put it off, let’s vote to put it off. I understand the aim is against me participating in a grand opening, and I understand that this has already been discussed.” Commissioner Fogelberg responded “We could invite you back, if you don’t leave the country.” This item was once again passed on until the next Commissioners Court. 27. Discussion and possible action regarding Fannin County Employee Handbook update; employee
badges – Commissioner Precinct 1. By a vote of 4-1, with Judge Cunningham voting nay, it was decided that employees with picture badges won’t be required to go through a security checkpoint. Anything they bring into the building must be screened. The sheriff’s office has volunteered to make the badges for only $1 per badge to cover the cost of materials. During this discussion it was revealed that the back-up generator is installed however it is not wired up to be useful. Commissioner Waggoner commented “That’s additional, and it has to be engineered by an electrical engineer before it can be done.” 28. Discussion and possible action regarding hiring an attorney to represent Fannin County; County Judge and Commissioner Precinct 2 to be excluded from discussion and vote – Commissioner Precinct 3 and County Auditor as Risk Management Coordinator. A contentious discussion ensued regarding the county hiring an attorney to represent the county in the potential upcoming lawsuit. Judge Cunningham stated “Gentlemen, first of all, I’m not going to be excluded from the discussion. Second of all, I do not think that, Commissioner Self needs to be excluded from the discussion. What he does need to be excluded from is voting. He, in his petition, has indicated that he is considering suing Fannin County. I am not considering suing Fannin County for anything. So I’m going to vote. And I get to vote if I want to. I get to abstain if I want to. Commissioner Self gets to abstain if he wants
to. But we’re going to have a discussion about hiring a quality attorney to represent the county in a lawsuit that may involve Commissioner Self suing the county in federal court. Now, I think that’s substantial reason for him not to be involved. I would also tell you that we started out with having a lawsuit against a bunch of contractors that we could have recovered money on, whether that’s thousands, hundreds of thousands, or millions. They were on the defensive. We had a Commissioners Court that decided that there was nothing wrong with this courthouse and decided to drop any lawsuits and created the situation we now find ourselves in. And that was engineered to a large extent by some of the people who are involved in the current possible litigation. Interesting problem. The light’s gonna shine in, everybody’s gonna take a look at it. Now, I wanna make sure we have an attorney to represent us.” Commissioner Kopf stated “We were told early on that one of y’all was gonna have to pick an attorney for us. I don’t like that. I’d like to pick our own attorney for the county.” Commissioner Fogelberg stated “I would make a motion that me and Commissioner Kopf get together and talk to these lawyers, and we do this as quick as possible, and we come up with a lawyer.” The motion was seconded by Commissioner Waggoner and approved 4-1 with Commissioner Self abstaining. Adjourn

timely rainfall, helped bobwhite and scaled quail production. “Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists covered over 3,300 road miles in early August during our annual roadside quail surveys,” said Patrick Schutz, TPWD Upland Game Bird Program Leader. “Overall, the numbers were once again in good shape in this year’s surveys, and we anticipate a good season for hunters especially in the South Texas and Trans Pecos regions where populations have traditionally been the strongest.” Bobwhite quail faced a mixture of habitat conditions and weather patterns throughout the state which resulted in a fluctuating population by ecoregions. Despite some challenges, most ecoregions had an above average number of bobwhites observed per route when compared to the 15-year average. In north Texas, public hunting opportunities for bobwhite quail hunting are available at Matador Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Gene Howe WMA, and Teacup Mountain WMA. Teacup Mountain WMA is a relatively new 11,091-acre WMA that is actively being managed for a suite of wildlife, including bobwhite quail. Even though the 2026 survey revealed slightly lower numbers compared to last year, the Rolling Plains will continue to provide solid chances for hunters looking to harvest birds. In South Texas, the average number of bobwhites seen per route by biologists was 10.17, which is still above the 15-year mean of 9.92. Timely rains and quality habitat conditions resulted in multiple successful hatches being reported in this ecoregion. Public hunting opportunities can be found at the Chaparral and James E. Daughtrey WMAs. “TPWD biologists anticipated bobwhite populations to be impacted by the hot and dry weather we experienced this summer,” said Schutz. “However, we were pleased with this year’s survey results statewide. I encourage taking first time quail hunters out to experience the thrill of a covey rise!” According to the 2026 survey, scaled quail populations continued their upward trend with the average number of birds exceeding the 15-year average in most ecoregions.

Thomas Leonard Bellows
Thomas Leonard Bellows, lovingly known as Tommy, Daddy, and Grandad, was a remarkable man whose life was defined by faith, family, kindness, and a love that reached everyone fortunate enough to know him. Born on January 29, 1962, in Bonham, Texas, to Charles Henry Bellows and Julie Beth Leonard, Tommy grew into the kind of man who made the world a better place simply by being in it. On June 12, 1981, Tommy married the love of his life, Vicki Lynn Nelson. Together, they built a life rooted in love, devotion, and family, sharing 45 years of marriage. Vicki was his greatest love, his lifelong partner, and the heart of the family they built together. Their love was a beautiful example of commitment and the kind of bond that time can never diminish. Tommy was a proud father to his two children, Colt and Lauren, and nothing brought him greater joy than being Grandad to Hadley, Reed, Levi, and Wade. His grandchildren were among his greatest blessings, and he loved them with his whole heart. To them, he was so much more than a grandfather. He was their best friend, their fishing buddy, their teacher, their source of laughter, and someone who could always make everything feel okay. He taught them through his words, but even more through the way he lived. The memories they made with him will be carried in their hearts for the rest of their lives. For Colt, he was a pillar, he was the best man to have as a father that any son could ever ask for. For Lauren, he was her sun, he made her into the strong independent woman that she is. For more than 38 years, Tommy worked at Coca-Cola, where he met countless people and made lasting connections along the way. After retirement, he decided that he would get another job to keep himself busy. If there was ever a honey-do list, he was your guy. He had a way of making people feel welcome, valued, and loved. He never needed recognition for the good he did, and he never expected anything in return. If someone needed help, Tommy was there. If someone needed a laugh, he could deliver. If someone needed a friend, he was ready to be one. His impact reached far beyond the workplace because he never met a person without the opportunity to make their day a little brighter. At home, Tommy could often be found in his beloved Little Whittle Room, patiently carving and creating with his hands. Whittling was one of his special gifts, a reflection of the patience, care, and creativity that made him who he was. Just as he could turn a simple piece of wood into something beautiful, Tommy had a way of making ordinary moments meaningful. He also believed food should never go to waste, could make just about anyone laugh, and had a sense of humor that made being around him a joy. Above all, Tommy loved the Lord fiercely. His faith was not simply something he talked about; it was something he lived every single day. He walked in the way of Christ through his compassion, generosity, humility, patience, and willingness to serve others. He loved people without conditions, gave without expecting anything back, and showed kindness in ways both big and small. He was the kind of man who lived his faith so naturally that those around him could see Christ reflected in the way he loved. When asked to describe their Grandad, his grandchildren shared words that paint the most beautiful picture of the man he was. They remembered that he was funny, strong, smart, helpful, patient, and always happy. They said he loved everyone no matter what, taught them so much, and would do anything for anyone. He was selfless, kind, and always cared. He could make anyone laugh, made everyone feel okay, and helped people without ever expecting anything in return. They remembered how good he was at carving, how he never let food go to waste, and how he was the best fishing buddy they could ever ask for. Most of all, they remembered him as their best friend and the kindest, best person they knew. There is no greater testament to a life well lived than the love someone leaves behind. Tommy’s grandchildren knew him as the best person they had ever known, and that says everything. He made people happy. He made people feel safe. He showed up, gave generously, loved deeply, and lived selflessly. He was strong when others needed strength, patient when others needed grace, and funny when the world needed a little laughter. He made people feel like they mattered, because to Tommy, they did. Tommy was taken far too soon on October 11, 2026, leaving behind a family and community forever changed by his life and his love. Though his absence leaves a hole that can never truly be filled, the legacy he leaves behind is immeasurable. It lives on in the family he cherished, the people he helped, the laughter he shared, the things he created with his hands, the lessons he taught, and the faith he demonstrated every day. Tommy is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Vicki Bellows; his son, Colt Bellows, and his children, Hadley and Reed Bellows; his daughter, Lauren Dickson, her husband, Chris, and their sons, Levi and Wade; His sister Teri Sanford, husband Larry of Ector; Sister Danita Williams of Sherman; Sister Diana Russell, husband Brad of Weatherford; Stepfather Don Nelms of Ector; along with countless family members, friends, coworkers, and others whose lives were made better by knowing him. He was preceded in death by his Father, Charles Bellows, his Mother, Julie Bellows-Nelms, and his Brother Glen Bellows. Though our time with him was far too short, we are forever blessed that we got to love him, learn from him, laugh with him, and call him ours. His life was a gift, his love was a blessing, and his example will continue to guide the people he leaves behind. Some people leave footprints on this earth. Tommy left pieces of his heart in everyone who knew him. He loved fiercely. He gave freely. He lived faithfully. He made people laugh. He made people feel loved. And to his family, he was never just Tommy. He was Daddy. He was Grandad. He was home. Tommy hung the moon. And for those who loved him, it will never shine quite the same without him. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 16, 2026, at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham, Texas. Mr. Scott Ellis officiated. Pallbearers were Shane Ball, Jared Lankford, Jeff Morris, Chris Hughes, Charlie Bellows, and Mack Sells.Honorary Pallbearers wewre Tommy’s beloved grandchildren, Levi Dickson, Hadley Bellows, Wade Dickson, and Reed Bellows. PSALMS 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Everett Dale Davis
Everett Dale Davis, known to family and friends as Dale, passed away on October 7, 2026, in Bonham, Texas, at the age of 87. Arrangements are under the direction of Wise Funeral Home, Bonham, TX. Dale was born on April 14, 1939, in Santa Anna, Texas, and he lived a life marked by hard work, steadfast faith, and a deep devotion to the people he loved. He was a loving, faith-filled, and funny man whose presence brought warmth, laughter, and a sense of steadiness to those around him. He was fun loving and mischievous in the best ways, and he carried himself with a kind spirit and a righteous character that reflected the values he held dear throughout his life. Dale spent many years as a farmer and rancher, and he found great satisfaction in working with his cows and tending to the life he built with his own hands. He also owned Chaparral Manufacturers in Trenton, Texas, where he applied the same dedication and integrity that guided him in every other part of his life. After retiring, he enjoyed the slower pace of life for the past 20 years, but he never lost the work ethic or practical wisdom that defined him. His life was one of purpose, perseverance, and quiet strength. Above all else, Dale was a Godly man whose faith remained central to everything he did. He served as a deacon at Gober Baptist Church for 43 years, faithfully supporting his church family and living out his beliefs through his actions. His service was not only a title but a true calling, and those who knew him saw in him a man committed to prayer, humility, and service. He was respected for the way he lived, and his example of devotion and consistency left a lasting impression on many. Dale married the love of his life, Ila, straight out of high school, and together they shared a true holy matrimony built on love, loyalty, and a lifetime of shared memories. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to commitment and grace, and their bond remained a source of strength and joy throughout the years. He treasured Ila deeply and honored the life they created together. Their union was blessed with a family that became the center of his world. He was a proud Grand Daddy to his 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, and he delighted in each one of them. His family brought him great happiness, and he cherished the moments spent with them. Whether he was sharing a laugh, telling a story, or simply enjoying their company, Dale made sure his loved ones knew they were valued. His legacy lives on in the generations who will remember his humor, his faith, his wisdom, and the steady love he gave so freely. Dale also had a special gift for the simple pleasures of life. He loved smoking meat and making biscuits on his mama’s cast iron stove, and these cherished traditions reflected the homegrown comfort and authenticity that were part of who he was. The memories of those times will remain treasured by all who were fortunate enough to share them with him. He appreciated good food, good company, and the kind of moments that become family legends over time. He is preceded in death by parents, Richard and Leona Davis, sister,. Letter to the Editor
Keep Fannin County’s Emergency Management Coordinator Connected to the Emergency Operations Center!
Letter to the Editor Partially paid by Judy Fowler
The Commissioners Court has decided to move Emergency Management Coordinator and Fire Marshal Troy Hudson from the sheriff’s office to the courthouse. The move deserves reconsideration before it proceeds. Residents should hear how it could affect emergency response operations during critical incidents and disasters. This change could also affect other programs, including our search-and-rescue program, which has operated for the past five years. A decision like this could affect response times, potentially with life-and-death consequences. The Emergency Management Coordinator works in day-to-day coordination with the county’s 911 dispatch center, which in some cases directly identifies the appropriate resources for a particular emergency. Concerned residents are urged to contact their commissioner and ask the Court to reconsider before the move proceeds. According to the Commissioners Court, the rationale for the move is that the courthouse would make Hudson more accessible in his role as Fire Marshal for fire code permits. The Fannin County fire code permitting process is initiated and completed online. Currently, the Fire Marshal’s and Emergency Management offices receive few, if any, visitors regarding permits. Meetings and in-person discussions are scheduled and often take place at the site where the permit is to be issued. The more urgent concern is what happens in the first moments of an emergency. If a call comes into the sheriff’s office, planning may begin immediately at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). If Hudson is based elsewhere, he may miss the initial information and decisions, then join later after officers have already begun organizing the response. Think about your child going missing or an elderly mother, father, or other loved one with dementia wandering away from home. Would you want the emergency coordinator to drive back and forth or to miss the first briefing and have to catch up on secondhand information? In a search, every minute and every detail can matter. This could be a disastrous decision if it separates the Emergency Management Coordinator from the first moments of planning. Every family in the county should ask whether an office move is worth that risk. Hudson draws on more than two decades of experience and formal education in fire, law enforcement, and federal emergency operations to build the Fannin County Search and Rescue program and other programs from the ground up. In the past, the county has seen an active Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) lose

momentum when volunteers and leadership became disconnected. Hudson brought people back together and built what supporters describe as the only North Texas wilderness searchand-rescue team, along with an auxiliary group that includes local amateur-radio operators who train and respond with the team. His experience building a capable volunteer response in a rural county is rare. Fannin County is fortunate to have someone of his caliber giving emergency management his attention around the clock, including nights, weekends, and whenever a call comes in. Fannin County’s volunteers have already helped locate multiple missing people. The emergency management volunteer team, which includes search and rescue, is entirely volunteer-based. Members buy their own equipment and train on nights and weekends, with Hudson and external experts he invites to teach. Their training includes coordination with the Child Abduction Response Team (CART), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) damage assessment, the National Incident Management System (NIMS), widearea search, tracking by day and night, navigation, helicopter landing zones, ropes and rappelling, knots, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), communications,
logistics, search management, canvass operations, and tactical briefings. Search and rescue is not limited to missing-person calls. Volunteers may also support responses after tornadoes and other weather emergencies. With Emergency Medical Services (EMS) crews sometimes covering long distances in a rural county, searchers trained in first aid may be able to reach a person in a hard-to-access location and help bring them to emergency medical technicians (EMTs). When Bois d’Arc Lake was added to the county, Hudson quickly recognized the need for water-rescue training. The team is now training for water rescue with personnel at the Lake Operations Center. At the last Commissioners Court meeting, the Emergency Management Coordinator’s role was characterized as “administrative,” and his field involvement was questioned. Emergency management and fire marshal work are not about “chasing cars.” They require being ready to respond to an incident, share information, coordinate responders, and manage resources. The county has seen what can happen when emergency management becomes disconnected from the field: volunteer capacity fades. I am asking the commissioners to hear the facts from the
field and leave politics out of life-and-death decisions. Before the move proceeds, the public deserves a clear explanation of how the county will keep Hudson involved in the Emergency Operations Center’s earliest planning and preserve this trained volunteer resource for Fannin County. Concerned citizens are pleading with commissioners to hear the facts from the field, set politics aside, and reconsider this potentially disastrous decision. Please urge the Court to put public safety first. A decision affecting emergency response should be based on facts from the field, not political considerations or office convenience. The citizens of Fannin County need to stand up and take notice of the flagrant misuse of power allowing one citizen to influence a commissioners court for their own personal agenda. If the commissioners will not listen to the citizens of Fannin County then we need to recall them and vote them out. Truth Is Truth
Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas I am very thankful that I live in a country where I have the privilege to cast my vote. It is an opportunity to let my voice be heard. I, like many of you, have a “Biblical worldview.” This means that the “lens” through which I interpret truth, morality, and human existence is based on the Holy Scriptures. It doesn’t waiver in the winds
of culture. Truth is truth for all generations since Jesus is the Truth and He is the same “yesterday, today, and forever.” Therefore, Lissa and I are committed to enter the voting booth and vote for candidates who most closely adhere to the biblical standards of morality and truth. There has never been a perfect candidate, and there never will be. However, I am called to shine the Light
and spread the salt of Jesus (Matthew 5:13-16) in every area of my life - including politics and the voting booth. Early voting begins Monday, October 19. Please do your part as a citizen and follower of Christ to cast your vote. For His Glory, Lyn and Lissa
Finding the JOY in Living
Life is given to us to be celebrated with joy and happiness. God gives us all things richly to enjoy. Doing things the way the Bible teaches brings us joy. The Bible is full of principles to live by so our life is full and blessed. Psalm 1:1-3 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. In this Psalm you can see it is a choice to walk in the paths of the Lord. If we practice what the Bible teaches the Lord will
pour out His blessings upon us. The Lord will make it beneficial for us when we walk in His direction. The Lord will overwhelm you with good things. Ultimate joy and peace can be ours if we choose to live a godly life. What does the term blessed mean? It means happy/happiness/ manifold blessings (it is plural) Oh the blessedness (happiness) of that person who chooses to live for God. God has given us guidance in how we can achieve this blessed life. 1. walk not in the counsel of the ungodly 2. nor sitteth in the way of sinners 3. nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful 4. his delight is in the law of the Lord 5. in his law doth he
meditate day and night. There is joy and happiness when we live for Christ and live righteously. Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Living the Christian life will bring glory to Christ and joy to you. Choose today and be blessed with abundance of JOY. Pray and help others this week. You will find JOY in serving Christ and others. Pastor Bernard Antonis, Jr. Gospel Light Baptist Church Cooper, Texas
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
(Romans 1:16). The Gospel declares God’s eternal plan. In Peter’s first gospel sermon, after the death, burial, and resurrections of Jesus, informs that “Him (Jesus), being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it” (Acts 2:23-24). The Gospel declares the Resurrection to be Reliable. God did not leave himself without witness. Peter said, “And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead” (Acts 10:39-41) The Gospel declares the
Scriptures to be true. Luke presents the history of the church, “And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ” (Acts 17:2-3) The Gospel demands obedience. “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power” (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9). “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:3)
Gospel Of The Resurrection
The gospel of Jesus Christ is both exciting and encouraging to all that believe in the Holy Scriptures. In the first letter to the church at Corinth, Paul emphasizes the gospel as the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ “according to the scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). The Gospel declares Jesus to be the Son of God. Jesus was the master teacher, a good man, a friend to many, a healer. Jesus is proven to be the Son of God by his resurrection. Jesus is “declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:4). The Gospel declares the Power of God for salvation. Paul declares, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek”

Oakwood Cemetery, Honey Grove
Press Release - There is a lot going on at Oakwood Cemetery now that the weather may be cooling a little. The trees are being trimmed, and then most of the web worms will be removed. This always helps save our large, old trees from the hard winters and strong winds. So far this year, we have not lost any of the trees which are such a big part of what makes Oakwood so beautiful. But they are very expensive to maintain. Oakwood has a lot of drainage problems. Much of this is due to the rolling nature of the grounds--Oakwood is certainly not a flat cemetery. There are seeps underground which cause problems, especially in the rainy spring months. The water will even stand on the slopes for a while during these times, preventing the grass from being mowed properly. Every year, we try to do more work to address these issues. In some spots, the water washed out the roads every time it rained. Over the last twelve years, a lot of work has been undertaken to solve that problem. Soon, you will see more drainage work being done. Although this adds to the cleanup of the cemetery, it is vital to its overall health. In addition to the drainage work, this year, two
Bonham Farmers Market
volunteers used their tractors to loosen the gravel, making the roads seem like new. Oakwood Cemetery pays to have the thirty acres mowed twice a month for nine months, with some parts occasionally being mowed more than twice monthly. When the mowing slows down, there is time for other things, such as spraying weeds and weed eating places the mower can’t get to--there are many spots with high curbing the mower can’t access. And when items are placed on the ground in front of the headstone, the mower can’t clean around them. For several years, in March and October, two members of the board have cleaned the cemetery of faded flowers and broken items. October is coming soon, and the cemetery will be cleaned again. This is a labor of love, and these volunteers are greatly appreciated.

A lot of volunteer work is done at the cemetery year around, but mowing, keeping up the trees and roads, and improving the drainage are all very expensive. Without your donations, all this work could not be done. Everyone enjoys beautiful our Oakwood Cemetery. Please contribute.
