Lots of Fun at the Fannin County Museum of History on Saturday

On Saturday, October 21, visit the Museum in the old railroad depot in Bonham to see

trains, planes and fire trucks!

The Bonham Fire Department is celebrating its 130th anniversary and will have several fire trucks for kids and

adults to enjoy. Free hot dogs will be available as long as supplies last.

The Museum is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the

1st train into Bonham. Enjoy tours of the caboose and visit the Museum to see the fire engine that fought the Courthouse fire and the World War

Paris District Road Report for week of Oct. 9, 2023 Paris -- Here’s a look at work planned in the district for the week starting Oct. 9, 2023. These schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment failure or other unforeseen issues. Motorists are advised to remain alert and pay special attention to all signs, barricades and traffic controls, and reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems.

Fannin County: SH 78, from US 82 to the Oklahoma State line. Construction on this safety improvement project begins Oct. 9. Watch for daytime shoulder closures and occasional lane closures as workers install sloped end treatments on drainage structures and replace bridge rail and guardrail.

FM 100, from SH 56 to FM 2216. Watch for daytime lane closures as crews work to rehabilitate and widen the roadway. Motorists should expect delays as signals and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

FM 271, from SH 78 to FM 68. Watch for daytime lane closures as crews work to rehabilitate and widen the roadway. Motorists should expect delays as signals and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

SH 34, from FM 64 to FM 1550. Watch for traffic shifts and traffic-signal-controlled lane closures as workers build the bridge approaches for the new SH 34 roadway at the future Lake Ralph Hall.

FM 1550, from SH 34 to CR 3544. Watch for daytime lane closures as crews work on building the connection of the realigned FM 1550 to the existing roadway.

Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

FM 2077, from SH 56 to FM 1550. Watch for daytime lane closures as maintenance crews blade level the roadway with hotmix. Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

Road Work updates for Week ending 10/06/2023 As commissioner, I plan to let you know every week what we accomplished the week before in regards to our slogan "On the road to Recovery". As citizens, you expect us to be out working daily in the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard.

This week I want to highlight one of our dedicated employees, Dave Stratton. Dave has been with Precinct One since March 2021. Dave is our main grader driver and has been an

excellent source of information for background on the roads in our precinct. Dave is instrumental in keeping the equipment in good shape through timely oil changes and maintenance work. In his capacity as a grader driver, Dave has received many compliments for his work on the roads these past few weeks and we are ex-

tremely pleased that he is a part of the team.

For the week ending October 6, 2023 the team was able to grade the following county roads: 1265 - south end, 2005, 2020, 2025, 2035, 2036, 2200, 2210, 2211, 2220, 4010, 4015, 4020, 4021, 2025, and 4027. The rain on Wednesday night prevented any others from being done.

We are still working on CR 1130 trimming trees and hauling off brush. Training of a person to run the tree trimmer is being done on this road. With the rain on 10/4, the team spent the day removing downed limbs and cleaning up areas on

ORANGE ROLL BREAKFAST CAKE 3 c. flour ¾ c. sugar 4 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt 1½ c. buttermilk 2 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla ½ c. butter, melted Topping: 1 c. butter softened 1 c. sugar 2 Tbsp. flour

1 Tbsp. fresh orange juice 1 Tbsp. orange zest Orange cream glaze: 4 oz. cream cheese softened 2 c. powdered sugar ⅓ c. fresh orange juice 2 tsp. orange zest Preheat oven to 350° In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla and stir. Slowly pour in melted butter and fold into batter. Pour into greased 9x13 baking pan. In a medium bowl, stir together butter, sugar, flour, orange juice and orange zest. Drop evenly over batter and swirl with a knife to incorporate into the batter.

This is an important step as you want to swirl it into the cake from the bottom to the top. Bake for 30-36 minutes.

In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese for 1 minute until creamy. Add powdered sugar, orange juice, and orange zest.

Pour over warm cake. If you would like some of the glaze to seep into the cake, poke holes and let the glaze fill the cake. Garnish with fresh orange zest.

This recipe is good especially when you have guests and want to make something special for breakfast. Hope you will give this one a try :) ENJOY!!!

By Rich Hilliard MILLER GROVE -- Ector sophomore Lydia Essary, a 2022 State qualifier, on Oct. 11 won the District 23-1A varsity girls' individuals cross country race to qualify again for regional competition.

Three Dodd City sophomore girls also qualified individually for regional competition via Top-10 finishes at district: Breezy Jenkins, second; Addison Weeks, fourth; Riley Murray, sixth. All also advanced to regional

Meanwhile, Dodd City senior Jaden Mahar, a 2022 first-time State qualifier, finished as the district varsity boys' runnerup to lead the Hornets who placed third to earn their fifthconsecutive regional team advance.

The Dodd City boys' team also includes senior Ethan Barnard, junior Jackson Neely, sophomore Cash Crossland and sophomore Aiden Helms.

Mahar and Barnard have been

a part of regional qualifier cross country teams for Dodd City now for four years.

Sophomore Dominique Green also will again represent Ector in the regional boys' competition, advancing as a medalist via a sixth-place finish at district. Ector senior Holden Trainor also placed 17th at district.

The Region III-1A races will occur on Monday, Oct. 23, at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. The girls will run at 10 a.m; the boys will vie 30 minutes later.

Lady Rebs' Keeton runner-up, leads SR to repeat 14-2A XC district title

TRENTON - Senior Abbi Keeton finished second individually on Oct. 9 to lead Sam Rayburn's girls to their secondstraight District 14-2A varsity cross country championship and team regional advance.

The Lady Rebels won with 45 points and the team also includes the following additional advancing members with their district finishes: sophomore Maddie Gibbs, seventh; sophomore Emmy Riemer, ninth; sophomore Allie Parr, 12th;

sophomore Emilee McWhorter, 15th; sophomore Raylee Mussett, 26th; junior Miley Keeton, 27th.

It equates the fourth district championship for a Sam Rayburn girls' cross country team -- all occurring in the last 12 years.

All but Mussett also composed last year's Lady Rebels district championship and regional qualifier team.

Meanwhile, Trenton junior Lohany Martinez qualified individually for the girls' regional competition as a medalist.

Additionally, Sam Rayburn senior Drew Baker took 10th in the 14-2A boys' varsity competition on Oct. 9 to qualify for regional boys' competition individually as a medalist.

Baker also advanced in 2022 to regional competition as a part of the Rebels' team.

The Region II-2A meets will occur on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. The girls will run at 10 a.m., with the boys vying 30 minutes later.

Press Release - September saw more work completed on the site for the people moved from the Bois d’Arc Lake area and reburied at Oakwood. The large monument explaining the removals and detailing some of the history of the cemeteries involved has been placed at the north end of the section. Edward Cagle, who enlisted during the Civil War and died just a few months later at the age of 19, was the only veteran moved. He will receive a VA headstone. Previously, he only had a footstone.

October is the month Oakwood is cleared of faded flowers, broken objects, and any other debris found on the graves. This keeps our cemetery looking nice. The hot summer sun was hard on the silk flowers. Donations to Oakwood Cemetery may be sent to P.O. Box 96, Honey Grove, TX 75446.

Felts and Marie Sheffield Wallace.

The North Texas Municipal Water District selected Oakwood Cemetery as the place to reinter burials which were removed during the construction of Bois d'Arc Lake. The reinterments took place in 2021, and this memorial tells the story as best known of the cemeteries and those identified.

In 2018-2019, the graves within two family cemeteries called the Cagle-Wilks Cemetery and Bonham Cemetery were removed. These two small family cemeteries were located off County Road 2700 northeast of Carson, Texas, in what would become the main basin of the new lake.

The Cagle-Wilks Cemetery had 21 marked graves, and one other burial had been identified through a death certificate.

During the removal process, 13 additional unmarked graves were discovered.

The first known burial is that of young Martha Cagle, who died in 1850 at the age of 5 from scarlet fever. The next known burial was that of Martin Gaines Cagle, father of Martha, who died in 1852 at the age of 43. Mr. Cagle and his family came to Texas from Arkansas as early as 1844, during the Republic of Texas days.

The Wilks family is thought to have arrived in Texas in 1866, with the first burial in 1869 and the latest in 1932.

The Bonham Cemetery had one headstone containing two names, as well as two associated footstones. In accordance with the family's wishes, those stones and the remains of Louisa and Charity Bonham were relocated to Willow Wild Cemetery.

During the removal process, 20 additional burials were found and the identity of these individuals remains unknown. Of the 20 burials, 10 were infants or children and 10 were adults. And all were reinterred at Oakwood Cemetery.

In 2022, one additional burial from near Shiloh, Texas was that of Sintha Morgan.

She died in 1846 and was relocated to Oakwood Cemetery.

From the total of the 55 individuals reinterred at Oakwood Cemetery, 29 are infants or children and many others are young adults. This is a testament of the hard times and struggles faced by these pioneers and their families.

Truths The Sower Must Recognize

From the parable of the Sower, Jesus reveals that “The seed is the word of God” (Luke 8:11). While there are many types of soil, there are certain truths that the ‘sower’ must recognize.

The ‘sower’ must believe in the seed, the word of God. Paul stated that he was “not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth” (Romans 1:16). We must understand that “the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

The ones ‘sowing’ must do so with the right attitude.

Timothy was reminded that “the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will” (2 Timothy 2:24-26). We are instructed to be “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15).

Sowers must be ready to spread the word to all kinds of soils. Jesus taught in the synagogues, in the temple, in the street, from ships, and to all kinds of people. The Lord said that was “come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).

The ‘sower’ must sow at all times, not just when everything is favorable. Solomon wrote that “He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap” (Ecclesiastes 11:4). Paul simply stated, “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine” (2 Timothy 4:2).

Sunday Morning Re-take “The Great Guidance Counselor”

Hello everyone!

The Bible teaches us in Proverbs 19:20-21, “Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end. There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.”

Do you remember your guidance counselors from when you were in school? I remember having to meet with some of mine back in those days. Some for good things, some for bad, but they always gave me good advice on how to handle the situations that I was in. We, not just as individuals, but also as a nation, ought to think of our Lord, Jesus Christ, as our guidance counselor for whatever we face in our lives.

As I wrote a couple of weeks ago, we are to seek out His will for our lives first and foremost.

We know that we don’t have all the answers, but we also know that He does, and that He is willing and able to help us. We must be willing to step out in faith, and trust Him. We also must remember that the answer might not come when we want, but that it is in His own good time.

William Cowper (17311800) was an English poet and Anglican hymn writer. He wrote this one in 1774.

“God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform; He plants His footsteps in

the sea and rides upon the storm. Deep in unfathomable mines of never-failing skill; He treasures up His bright designs, and works His sovereign will. Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take; the clouds ye so much dread are big with mercy and shall break in blessings on your head. Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, but trust Him for His grace; behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face. His purposes will ripen fast, unfolding every hour; the bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flower. Blind unbelief is sure to err, and scan His work in vain; God is His own interpreter, and He will make it plain.”

Those that sow must realize that others may reap the harvest. Jesus told his apostles, “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labour” (John 4:35-38).

We must sow the seed and leave the increase to God. The Lord said, “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). Paul wrote “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:6).

About Accountability Everyone is called to be accountable in some way.

Husbands and wives are accountable to be faithful to each other. Children are called to be accountable in their obedience to parents.

Employees are called to be accountable to their employers and students are called to be accountable to their teachers. ““So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God” (Romans 14:12).

“Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you” (Hebrews 13:17).

“But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead” (1 Peter 4:5).

Texas leaders create first new lakes since 1980s to accommodate booming population

LADONIA, Texas — Ed Motley stands in the middle of a large field, about an hour and a half northeast of Dallas, and looks on as heavy machinery pours concrete and workers build up the dirt embankments of the 16,000-acre construction site.

“They’ve been placing this concrete for about the last

nine months,” said Motley, the project manager for Lake Ralph Hall.

Nine months is just a small paragraph in the story of Motley’s lake, though. The longtime engineer first heard the name Lake Ralph Hall back around the turn of the millennium when he was tapped by state leaders to build a new lake for the Upper Trinity Water District – the district serving some of the fastest growing portions of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Back in about the year 2000, Motley says leaders in the small community of Ladonia came to state leaders, including the late Rep. Ralph Hall, wanting to build a new lake to help bolster some interest in the town; the first new lake talked about in the state since Lake Ray Roberts filled in the early 1980s.

“Sometimes it feels likes it’s been yesterday,” said Motley, remembering those early meetings that developed out the idea. “It’s been a very interesting ride.”

The group certainly went big with the project and now, 23 years later, Motley said construction is moving along and

his team hopes to start filling that new lake with water in the next couple of years, and that may not be a moment too soon.

Lake Ralph Hall is one of two new lakes being created right now to service the booming population in the DallasFort Worth area. The other, Lake Bois D’Arc, is already filling with water right now.

“It’s badly needed for our water supply,” said Motley.

Most of Texas’s major lakes are built, not naturally occurring, to give the people of the state the water they need to call it home. Motley said that even in the early 2000s it was clear that the water supply would need to grow if it was going to quench the thirst of the increasing population.

Since then, the projections of growth have only gotten more intense for North Texas and the rest of the state.

“A hundred thousand people moving to the area every year, a hundred thousand people, and they’re not bringing water with them,” said Motley.

So the state’s water districts will likely have to build more lakes to keep up, and that’s more on top of those two go-

ing up near Ladonia.

Jason Pierce, a spokesperson for the Upper Trinity Water District, said he’s heard about the "new lake" conversation happening across the Lone Star State as growth seems to be coming from every direction. Even with Lake Ralph Hall soon easing their burden, he said even his district is having to think farther out already.

“It will get us until about the mid-2040s and then we will need an additional water supply to meet the growing needs of our service area,” said Pierce.

It starts, though, with those two new lakes in North Texas.

From there, we’ll have to see how the population grows and if the next legacy of another engineer like Motley is set to begin.

“There’s so many aspects to building a lake. It’s one of those career things that you only get to do once in your life,” said Motley.

With completion of his lake now in sight, he says it’s a larger mark than he ever imagined it would be when this all began, and one he couldn’t leave at a better time.

RAYMOND CLYDE KUHN

Raymond Clyde Kuhn of Leonard, Texas, passed away October 10, 2023, at the age of 100. He was born on February 12, 1923, to Claude and Eva Kuhn in Leonard, Texas. He married Betty Jo Flanagan Kuhn on September 29, 1944, in Leonard, Texas.

They shared 73 beautiful years together.

Raymond is survived by his daughters, Phyllis Thacker and husband Earl of Leonard, Texas, Charmain Yarbrough and husband Ken of Longview, Texas; grandchildren, Teresa Everingham and partner, Bill, Stacey Smith and husband Jimmy, Rodney Yarbrough and wife Suzanne, Brad Thacker and Dustin Thacker; 8 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; brother, Charles Kuhn and wife Helen; and a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude, and Eva Kuhn; wife, Betty Jo Flanagan Kuhn; 3 Siblings; nephew; Jerry Kuhn.

CORDELIA RUCKER

Cordelia Rucker, 87 year old Woodward resident passed away, Sunday, October 8, 2023 in Oklahoma City.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 pm Sunday, October 15, 2023 at the Selfs Church of Christ in Honey Grove, Texas.

A burial followed in the Shiloh Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Allie Cordelia (Newhouse) Rucker was born March 27, 1936 in the Shiloh Community, 10 miles North of Honey Grove, Texas to John Lipscomb and Holly Opal (Bell) Newhouse. The family moved to West Texas when Cordelia was 5 years old.

Cordelia was baptized into Christ in 1947 in Sylvester, Texas at the age of 11. She graduated from High School in Abilene, Texas in 1953. She attended Draughn’s Business College while she worked as a bookkeeper for West Texas Utilities Company in Abilene for 6 years.

Cordelia was married to James Elmo Rucker on August 13, 1957 at North Park Church of Christ in Abilene, Texas. Jim and Cordelia had three children, Laura Leigh, Elaine Suzanne, and James Barron.

In August of 1960, Jim began a 40 year ministry, preaching for the Churches of Christ in Santa Anna, Texas, Sherman, Texas, and then Woodward, Oklahoma. Cordelia worked alongside Jim in this lifetime ministry while helping raise 3 children. Cordelia taught Bible classes, was a bus captain for the Joy Buses, taught Pre-School Bible Hour, and helped in numerous ways with all the church activities. She was well known for her large chocolate chip cookies that she made for her students that attended regularly.

Cordelia became quite the seamstress, making some of the costumes for the Woodward production of “Sound of Music” in the early seventies. Also, she made a barrel like clown suit for Suzie for the Spring Sing at Oklahoma Christian College. She made numerous bridesmaids dresses for Laura as she was in her girlfriends weddings at OC. She did all of this on a Feather Weight sewing machine that was put on the kitchen table between meals.

She made a lot of her children’s clothes, too. She made a little navy blazer for four year old Barry. As she was trying it on him he remarked “I look just like a Christian now”. After retirement, Cordelia submitted articles to a Daily devotional Magazine, “Power for Today” of which several were published. She was also very involved with World Bible School and spreading the gospel by correspondence courses and prison ministry. She and Jim wrote numerous letters to the prisoners. They researched and answered many of their questions with the scriptures and their vast knowledge of the Bible.

She enjoyed having her family together and was always such a gracious host. All the kids and grandkids have vivid memories of eating wonderful meals and playing games around Meme and Granddad’s dining room table. Family meant so much to Cordelia, she always kept in touch with all her family and was always so good to write letters, make phone calls, and wrote the sweetest notes to everyone.

Cordelia was preceded in death by her parents, John Lipscomb and Holly Opal Newhouse, her husband Jim, one sister Rosa Ann McArthur.

She is survived by her three children, Laura Coale of Oklahoma City, Suzie Wheelock of Woodward, Barry Rucker and wife Jana of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren, Allie and husband Tyler Blake of Oklahoma City and son James, Brandon Wheelock and Kathryn Shore of Woodward, Jamie Rucker and wife Lauren of Oklahoma City and daughter Zoey, Brooke Wheelock of Phoenix, Arizona, Brady Wheelock and Mariah Hignite and son Grayson of Oklahoma City, John Rucker of Orlando, Florida; one sister Joyce Skaggs and husband Don; three sisters in law Dorothy and husband Bob Anderson of Knoxville, Tennessee; Mildred Rucker and Sue Rucker; brother-in-law Doug McArthur; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins.

CENTRAL Rain amounts ranged from traces to over 3 inches. The rain provided topsoil moisture and helped the emergence of fall-planted winter grain forages, and pastures greened up. Some tanks caught water.

Small grain planting continued as producers were optimistic about rain chances. Cooler temperatures arrived toward the end of the week. Most producers could get a hay-cutting in the next two to three weeks.

Armyworms were reported in the area. Overall, rangeland and pasture conditions were very poor to good. Livestock were in poor to good condition.

EAST Rain was received across the district, and hay meadows and pastures were improving. There were many reports of armyworm infestations as pasture conditions improved.

Cherokee County reported that some producers began spraying for armyworms while others decided to cut forages they had instead of spraying. Hay was still being brought in from out of state. Recent rainfall helped fall gardens and jumpstarted winter pasture planting. Cattle markets remained strong. Livestock were doing

fair to good with some supplementation taking place.

NORTH Pastures and rangelands were in very poor to poor condition for most counties.

Subsoil and topsoil moisture levels were very short to short for most of the counties. Temperatures started to drop over the past week. Counties within the district received anywhere from 1-10 inches of rainfall over the past week. All summer crops were harvested, and the ground was prepared for winter wheat planting. Hay was being fed in many parts of the district. Livestock conditions were fair and continued to improve.

ROLLING PLAINS All counties reported some precipitation and cooler temperatures. Farmers started sowing winter wheat before the rains, and planting across the district was in full swing.

Most cattle producers cut back on supplemental feeding as pastures showed a bit of improvement. Damage to the cotton crop from the intense heat and dry conditions this summer were becoming more evident.

Reports were not optimistic for much of a cotton crop this season.

Cooper FAIR. Water lightly stained; 83 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. Few reports and anglers on the water due to water levels. Few catches of carp, catfish and crappie.

Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 84-86 degrees; 5.29 feet below pool. White bass are biting white or chartreuse once ounce lead slabs with a crappie jig 1/16 ounce tied on a looped knot 2 feet above your slab, or paddle tail swimbait. Fish in 5-15 feet of water on slopes, main lake points and flats. This time of year once the water temperature hits approximately 75 degrees they start to hug the shoreline in 1-3 feet of water with the gizzard shad. Bluegill, or sunfish, are on most brush piles in 15 feet of water. Catfish are great on baited holes with shrimp, chicken, liver or cut bait.

Ray Roberts GOOD. Water is clear; 75 degrees; 2.16 feet below pool. Sand bass are good with many limits caught off the bottom in 30-40 feet of water with slabs with a hair jig as trailer. Bass are fair with topwater some mornings, then target grass beds with small spinner baits. Crappie are slow in standing timber in 15-30 feet of water.

Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 80 degrees; 1.67 feet below pool. Lake Tawakoni continues to fish good for hybrid striper and white bass despite hot water temperatures this late in the season. The recent cold front has helped but we are still seeing water temps in the upper 70s. Whites and hybrids are good on slabs and swim baits in 6-14 feet of water.

The eating sized catfish are red hot on baited holes in 12-25 feet of water on prepared baits such as punch and dip baits.

The trophy catfish are starting to feed and we are seeing fish in the 30-40 pound range so far on cut shad. The crappie bite has picked up and we are starting to see fish eating jigs.

Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 86-88 degrees; 3.36 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is great on live shad fishing suspended 30 feet down in 55-65 feet of water. The fish are starting to school up and seeing larger fish every day the weather cools off. Big stripers will be on the banks and in the backs of creeks this weekend with the cold front. Whopper ploppers or pencil poppers will be the ticket on the banks in 2-8 feet of water. Crappie are stacked on structure in 15-20 feet of water using jigs and electronics to locate active fish.

Catfish are getting better every day for the larger fish. Drifting 55-65 feet of water along deep flats using cut shad. Small fish are catchable on cut shad and prepared baits in 35-55 feet of water. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are fair on swimbaits in the backs of the rocky coves and on the boulders. Seeing a lot of smaller fish with the occasional 4 plus pound bass.

Investi-gators at the Ready While responding to an anonymous call about alligator poaching on the Neches River, game wardens from Anderson, Henderson and Smith counties found an alligator shot with a compound bow behind the Lake Palestine Spillway. After injuring the 4.5-foot alligator, the suspect jumped into the river to retrieve the alligator. Two other people assisted in dispatching it with a knife before the trio began taking pictures and a video to post on social media. Eventually, the two accomplices left the scene with the alligator while the shooter remained behind and was discovered by the Henderson and Smith County game wardens.

The shooter initially swam to the other side of the river, but ultimately returned to the wardens. After interviewing the suspect, the wardens pieced together a timeline of events and gathered enough evidence to file appropriate charges against the shooter.

However, their attempt to locate the alligator and the second and third suspects proved unsuccessful until the shooter provided video to the Anderson County Game Warden better identifying the individuals. As a result of the wardens’ investigation, multiple cases were filed includ-

ing hunting alligator during a closed season and hunting without a license. The cases are currently pending along with civil restitution.

Hi, I’m the Problem, It’s Me While patrolling over Labor Day weekend, Panola County Game Wardens contacted several dove hunting groups across the county. While most of their interactions were positive, the wardens contacted three different groups hunting doves over baited areas. They issued a total 19 citations for hunting over bait and seized 108 doves from the three parties.

Jumping Through Hoops While Texas Game Wardens from the Zapata District were patrolling Falcon Lake, wardens found eight hoop nets on the Texas side containing bluegill, channel catfish, blue catfish, freshwater drum, common carp and Rio Grande cichlid. Wardens seized and destroyed the nets and returned the fish to the water alive and well.

In a Heap of Trouble A Smith County Game Warden received a call from a landowner about materials dumped along a bridge and creek on his property. While the materials included mostly sheetrock, housing trim and lumber. The warden did find a box with a bar code that allowed him to trace the materials to a local store and, ultimately, the owner of the credit card used for the purchase. The warden interviewed the cardholder, who had just completed a home remodel for his family. He told the warden someone familiar with his family had offered to haul off the unused materials for a small fee.

The suspect kept the money and dumped the trash onto private property. Along with Smith County Sheriff’s Office environmental deputies, the warden served a warrant for felony commercial dumping over 200 pounds.

When arrested, the suspect had more building materials and trash in the truck.

By Malinda Allison, Fannin County Museum of History The 31st in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham The original fort, which was built by Bailey Inglish beginning in 1838 and perhaps finished in 1839, was located approximately where the main building of the VA Hospital now stands. It was a “block house” surrounded by a stockade, built for the Inglish family and neighbors

and friends to gather in times of Indian uprisings. No one knows when the original fort was demolished.

A replica was built on

East 9th Street in 1936-37 as part of the Texas Centennial at a cost of $2,500.

Tom Thornton remembers that his Boy Scout troop met

in the replica, which was just an empty building with a dirt floor. Tom also says that the door was never locked and many folks remember playing there as kid. But in 1965 this replica had fallen into a state of disrepair and was demolished.

In 1970 the Fannin County Historical Survey Committee began studying plans for a new replica. In 1976, as part of the U.S. Bicentennial Celebration, a new replica was built on a site owned by the City of Bonham adjacent to the Rayburn Library. It was partially financed with a grant from the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Texas.

The dedication took place in September 1976 and more than 75 of the then 300 descendants of Bailey Inglish attended. Plaques and certificates of appreciation were given to the more than 70 firms and individuals for their help in the making of the replica.

In 1977 a stockade fence was built around the fort, and in years to come more buildings were added to form a pioneer village.

An old log cabin was moved from Ivanhoe, and two cabins were moved from the grounds of the Stagecoach Inn in Dodd City. The frontier village now includes a general store, a meeting house and school and a blacksmith shop. All the buildings are furnished with items of the frontier era and give visitors a feeling of what life was like in early Fannin County.

The Fort itself is open March – November, Tuesday – Saturday, noon – 4 pm. There is no charge, but donations are encouraged as are purchases at the gift shop. School tours are conducted with volunteers dressed in period costumes and activities such as washing of clothes.

Shiloah community about three miles southwest of Dodd City. He was in partners with Drs. J.R. and S.W. McKee who had an office in Bonham and severed families west of Dodd City. In 1858 he semi¬-retired from his practice after selling his interest to Dr. S.W. McKee but was never too busy to help his neighbors up to the time of his death.

The VanNoy family settled about two miles east of E.H.Dodd’s home near the Cobb-VanNoy Cemetery . This family had several members that were involved in the medical field. The father, Rev./Dr.

William VanNoy (1807-1874) was born in Tennessee and moved to Mississippi about 1835. He was a postmaster in Sarepta , MS. He moved to Lick in the mid 1850s and was the last postmaster of Lick

in 1873. William served as a doctor and pastor in Tennessee, Mississippi and Texas for decades until his death. His sons: Dr. Thomas Jefferson, Sr.(1839-1925), Dr. John William, Dr. Walter Winfield, and Druggist, H. Foster(1877-1917) and grandson, Druggist, Thomas Jefferson, Jr.(1871-1944) who was one of the last druggist in Dodd City.

The picture below is Dr. TJ VanNoy and a prescription pad that was found in the Dodd City Cumberland Presbytain church March 4, 1889 minutes.

Dr. Orville H Caldwell (1832-1883) studied medical in Tenneesse under Dr. J. F. Turner. He came to Dodd City, Texas in 1859, served as the first mayor when the town first incorpated in 1879. While in Dodd City he built a new home in 1880 that still stands today.

It is located on the SE corner of main and 2nd street, below is the house as it was in 2017. Ad is from the Dodd City Spectator Jun 3, 1892. His son, Dr. Thomas Joseph Caldwell, was also a doctor in several Fannin County towns.* The 1860 US census of Lick records two physicians: Dr. James S. Sadler and Dr. A. Daughtery severed both Lick and the Stephensville/Lannius area. The 1870 US census list Dr. Albert William Clendenen, located west of Dodd City and Dr. W. C. Whitsett in Shiloah.

From the 1884 Nov 21 Dodd City Weekly Spectator: It’s hard to imagine Dodd City hosting the North Texas Medical Association meeting, but it happened about 138 years ago!

This paper recorded the entire speech. This paper also mentions several Dodd City and and Lannius doctors, dentist and drug stores. Like some doctors today, the early doctors also owned or were partners with someone who had a drug store. Crawford & Wolfe Bros carried drugs at their store in downtown Stephensville.

Marsh & Bedford Drugs store was purchased from H. S. Randall who is now adversting as a H. S. Randall’s Saloon. See below a few of the meical advertisments.

In the 1888 May 5 Dodd City Spectator an ad shows that Dr. T J VanNoy, Sr. has bought out John Organ’s portion of the drug store. In the same newspaper ads for: Dr. R. E. L. Kincaid, Dr. O. H. Caldwell and his son, Dr.T. J. Caldwell, and Dr. W. F. West, office in the Crawford & Norris Store at Stephensville and Dr. J. M. Neel of Windom. The dentist, Dr. John Royce had his office above the Organ & VanNoy Drug store.

According to the 1889 Biographical Souvenir: Dr J.D. Bedford (1857-1912) started his practice in Dodd City, and also had a drug store with his partner, Ronzee. Two years after Dr. Bedford’s arrival in 1883 he married into the well known Stephens’ family. He stayed until 1888 then he moved to Honey Grove and started a partnership with Dr. T.J. Caldwell formerly of Stephensville and Dodd City.

Later, Dr. Bedford moved to Amarillo and built the Bedford Hospital, he was a well respected person everywhere he lived.
