Sam Rayburn Drive in Bonham, Tx, was the site of a hearing held in the 336th District Court that was presided over by visiting Judge

Fred Duncan Thomas Jr. to determine whether a 202 Petition for Pre-Suit Discovery involving current and former Fannin County officials would be allowed to continue. Fannin County Judge Newt H. Cunningham III filed opposition to the 202 Petition and appeared in court to show

reasons for that opposition. The parties involved in the 202 Petition, Attorneys James P. Roberts representing current County Commissioner Allen J. Self and Attorney Don Tittle representing Anne Stimmel, David Chase and former County Commissioner Dean Lackey, were in court to

which included a lack of representation for the County as the Commissioners Court’s was unprepared to go forward with an attorney to represent Fannin County at this time, as well as himself not having been served with a time to appear as a representative of the county. He suggested the purpose of this 202 Petition was to harass him and further explained that misrepresentations were made when they asked for their pre-suit discovery that included the statement that “no criminal investigation had occurred”, when in actuality, the FBI had been involved. He further noted that another misrepresentation with the petition was their noting of there having been “a death in custody.” Attorney Roberts swiftly interjected his belief that the paragraph containing the notation of “a death in custody” had been left in from a prior 202 and stated, “I agree that that’s not relevant to this matter.” Continued

noted he was there to represent himself in the capacity as Fannin County Judge. He also noted the lack of attendance by some who may not have received notice but who were most likely being considered to be sued over the investigation of the courthouse problems. He expressed concern for what he believed to be a misuse of the 202 Petition noting that a Petition 20A would have been more appropriate and made the observation that insufficient notice of the 202 Petition had occurred as public notices should be placed in the papers due to the “service process” not sufficiently complying with the requirements to meet a 15 day ahead of time notice. When asked by Judge Thomas as to whether Attorney Richard Glaser had been notified of the 202 Petition, Attorney Roberts responded that Attorney Glaser had been served August 31st and that he had not yet responded. He surmised that Mr. Glaser and the others may not be in opposition to the petition. Judge Cunningham then attempted to explain the prob-

present why they believe their 202 Petition, (to determine if grounds exist to bring a possible lawsuit against Fannin County and others) should be allowed to continue. The reason for the Pre-Suit Discovery being, the attorney’s assertion that “fraudulent claims” were at the heart of a grand jury’s decision to indict their clients on December 19, 2024, for charges of theft between $150,000 to $300,000 relating to the renovation project of the Fannin County Courthouse, that began in November of 2016 and ended in March of 2022. The costs associated with that project ballooned from an initial projection of around $16,000,000 to approximately $29,000,000. The indictments of the individuals involved were handed down by a state grand jury after approximately six months of evidentiary hearings and were dismissed by Dallas District Attorney John Creuzot in June of 2025 for insufficient evidence. Thursday’s hearing began with the introduction of the two attorneys representing the parties seeking the 202 Petition and County Judge Newt

Cunningham noted he did not have a copy of the documentation Attorney Roberts had referenced. A lengthy discussion then ensued between Judge Thomas and Judge Cunningham on the merits of the 202 Petition request with Judge Thomas noting that the facts of what did or did not happen were not the reason for the day’s hearing but whether or not they could go forward with their discovery. After the back and forth between Judge Thomas and Judge Cunningham, Attorney Roberts interjected that, “honestly, at this point, the court is finding that there is no opposition from the county or Mr. Glaser and our petition is going to be granted so we can pursue discovery against them, we can release Judge Cunningham, uhm, he doesn’t need to be a part of this anymore, we can just go forward against the county…” Following Attorney Roberts discourse, Attorney Tittle spoke to note that they were not trying to violate Texas law but that they were wanting to exercise their right as civil attorneys to view the grand jury information that was currently being held by the criminal defense attorney and needed at this hearing, for the judge to give them a permanent order that would allow them to look at what had already been disseminated in order to see if there is a claim to be made with a lawsuit. Once both attorneys specified what they were wanting from the court, Judge Thomas noted that he did not like 202 “because it allows you to do discovery just because you say you want to pretty much” then turning to Judge Cunningham he stated that he understood his position but that he was going to rule that these lawyers could go forward with their 202 Motion. He then addressed the two attorneys and asked, “are you telling me you are going to release the Judge from Discovery, I didn’t hear you, did I hear

After which Attorney Roberts was asked that proper etiquette be followed with only one person at a time speaking. Judge Thomas then spoke to Judge Cunningham and asked, “you’re telling me that if they have something that you believe is not true in their petition, that disqualifies them?” To which Judge Cunningham replied, “if it is supporting their reasons for having us go through this thing, I think it does.” He noted he had case law supporting his request to deny their petition and explained that he was not trying to hide anything but was trying to protect grand jury information and the witnesses who testified during those hearings who might be concerned about their identities being made known. He then provided copies of the case law to Judge Thomas with copies of the same to both opposing attorneys. He also offered the court a collection of several documents assembled for a civil case he had been authorized to conduct by the previous Commissioners Court, regarding the substandard work done on the courthouse. That civil case was later voted down by the current Commissioners Court. After Cunningham provided Judge Thomas and the opposing attorneys the paperwork, Attorney Roberts asked permission to speak and stated his belief that Judge Cunningham was attempting to litigate the issues that the discovery is about in this hearing and stated the question for the court is whether or not the benefit of disclosure outweighs the burden of production. He noted that the transcripts of the grand jury had already been released and that the secrecy of the grand jury information was not an issue anymore. After asking Judge Thomas if he could intervene, Judge

Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself: • Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others? • Is there something I wish I could live without? • Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control? • Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed? Serving God Through the Calling of Funeral Service “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4 Being a funeral director is more than a profession to me. It is a calling—a ministry that allows me to serve God by caring for people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Every family that walks through our doors carries a story. Behind every arrangement conference, every obituary, every visitation, and every funeral service is someone who was deeply loved. There are parents saying goodbye to children, children saying goodbye to parents, husbands and wives parting after a lifetime together, and families trying to understand how the world can continue when someone they love is no longer physically beside them. In those moments, a funeral director is entrusted with something sacred. We are invited into a family’s grief at a time when they are vulnerable, exhausted, and often overwhelmed. They place someone they love into our care and trust us to treat that person with dignity. I believe that responsibility should never be taken lightly. For me, serving a grieving family is one of the ways I serve God. Jesus showed compassion to people who were hurting. He did not turn away from sorrow. Scripture tells us that when Lazarus died and Jesus saw the grief surrounding Him, “Jesus wept.” Those two simple words remind us that grief matters to God. Sometimes ministry does not happen behind a pulpit. Sometimes it happens quietly in a funeral home. It happens when we sit across the table from a family who does not know what to do next. It happens when we listen to stories about the person they loved. It happens when we stay late because a family needs a few more minutes. It happens when we straighten a flower, adjust a photograph, answer the telephone in the middle of the night, or make certain someone’s final appearance brings comfort to their family.,These may seem like small things, but love is often revealed through small things. Funeral service has also taught me that death has a way of stripping away the things we once believed were important. Titles, possessions, disagreements, and accomplishments suddenly seem much smaller. What remains are relationships, memories, faith, and the love we gave to others.

TRENTON -- Sam Rayburn freshmen Hallie Riemer and Ava Worsham joined Honey Grove sophomore Natalia Guajardo on Oct. 3 in qualifying individually for and Trenton advanced both teams to the Region II-2A cross country competition later this month. Waiting And Winning: Six-man Fannindel in '26 collecting Ws again in preparation for district

Fannindel's Terren Judkins (8) equated an All-State second team safety last season for the Falcons.

Fannindel's Michael Roberts (9) competes on defense on Sept. 26 during the Falcons' non-district home win over Tyler Heat's jayvee at Bishop Field.

Story and photos by Rich Hilliard LADONIA -- Playing six-man football has meant waiting until around Halloween to start district play the last two seasons for Class 1A-II Fannindel. Realignment in February shortened that wait during the 2026 and 2027 seasons for the Falcons. Fannindel retained no opponents from its previous alignment, joining Oakwood, Trinidad, Bynum and Mount Calm in the new 14-1A-II. Like in 2025, Fannindel has this season piled up wins while preparing for district action. The Falcons, an 11-1 area finalist and district champion last season, reached district play undefeated again during Jamie Rigdon's second season at their helm.

Fannindel's Chevy Wiggins (1) reaches en route to catching a pass on Sept. 26 during the Falcons' non-district home win over Tyler Heat's jayvee at Bishop Field.

Fannindel's Daylon Powell (7) carries the football on Sept. 26 during the Falcons' non-district home win over Tyler Heat's jayvee at Bishop Field.

Fannindel's Anthony Rojas (12) handled kickoffs and extra points for the Falcons on Sept. 26 during their non-district home win over Tyler Heat's jayvee at Bishop Field.

Jamie Rigdon has Fannindel again on a winning start in 2026 after the Falcons posted an 11-1 area finalist and district championship effort in 2025 during his first season in Ladonia.

Fannindel's Nathaniel Castillo (11) catches a snap on Sept. 26 while serving as quarterback for a play during the Falcons' non-district home win over Tyler Heat's jayvee at Bishop Field. Castillo equated an All-State honorable mention on special teams in 2025 for Fannindel.

Fannindel's Marico Smith (57) looks towards the end zone after catching a pass during a conversation attempt on Sept. 26 during the Falcons' non-district home win over Tyler Heat's jayvee at Bishop Field.

Fannindel's Joshua Kelly (3) catches a pass on Sept. 26 during the Falcons' non-district home win over Tyler Heat's jayvee at Bishop Field.

Attention! Much Is At Stake In The Upcoming Mid-Term Elections

Early voting begins October 19, 2026 and ends on October 30, 2026. Election day is November 3, 2026. Make sure you are familiar with the candidate’s positions on issues that are important to you before you cast your vote. You will find several key issues listed below and how each candidate is aligned to these issues in the Texas Governor’s race and the U.S. Senate race. NOTE: Jenn Mack is a write-in candidate for Governor. It is my understanding that the name of write-in candidates will not be displayed as a choice in the same field as the regular candidates. However, a list of write-in candidates will be provided in the voting booth. If you choose to vote for a write-in candidate, you must choose the Write-In option instead of a regular candidate. Then you are required to type the name of the write-in candidate in the field indicated. Mike Nejtek

Thomas Peyton Steger was born in Tennessee on March 15, 1852. He married Alice Scales and earned a license to practice law. After working as a telegraph operator and for the Associated Press in Memphis, Tennessee, he moved to Bonham, Texas, in 1889. In Bonham, he practiced law and served as the president of the Fannin County Bar Association. He was also a city judge for Bonham, and a lawyer for and director of the Steger Lumber Company. One of Thomas’s most famous cases was his representation of the unknown heirs of Tom Bean, a Fannin County lawyer and surveyor who had great wealth at the time of his death in 1887. Tom Bean died without a will and over 100 people claimed to be related to him. The estate was litigated for many years. Thomas was friends with Sam Rayburn, and supported Rayburn during his 1906 campaign for a seat in the Texas House of Representatives. When Rayburn needed training for his law degree, he worked with Thomas and Preston C. Thurmond at their law firm. Thomas managed Rayburn’s congressional campaign in 1912 when Rayburn first ran to represent the Fourth District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Thomas was regarded as “one of the best read men in the county” and “had collected what was perhaps the most extensive and best selected privately owned library in this part of the Country”. In the latter years of his life, he wrote letters to newspapers across the country, mainly the Dallas News. Thomas Steger and his wife had two children, Elizabeth “Bessie” Steger Rogers and Harry Peyton Steger. (The life of Harry Peyton Steger, who died in 1912, will be in another article.) Thomas died on March 25, 1932. He is buried at Willow Wild Cemetery. This information was obtained from the Fannin Co., Texas GenWeb (txfannin.org) and A History of Texas and Texans, V.5. The Sam Rayburn House SHS presented some of this information at their 2021 Cemetery Walking Tour. TPWD Game Warden Field Notes

7/14/26

The case for not running

On Aug. 26, Harrison Co. two game wardens were patrolling the Sabine River in Gregg Co. when one warden decided to check two subjects stuck in a van beside the river. The game wardens became suspicious, so the game warden decided to check the individuals out through Gregg Co. Sheriff’s Office. After completing criminal history, one of the subjects decided to take off on foot, leaving his friend stuck in the mud. The subject who ran thought the game warden had a warrant but was mistaken. Upon searching the vehicle, marijuana and a 9mm pistol were seized as evidence. The other warden was also

Rollie Rinker

Rollie Rinker was born November 22, 1937 in Van Buren, Arkansas. He died July 28th, 2026 in Spearman Texas. Rollie was the 12th of 14 children born to Joseph and Mamie Jennings Rinker. When he was a young boy, his family moved to Elmore City, Oklahoma where he attended school, graduating in 1956. During high school, he developed a love and talent for basketball. Rollie accepted a full scholarship from Coach Redin at Wayland Baptist University, Plainview, Texas, where he was an All-American choice. It was at Wayland that he met his one and true love, Ann Ray. They married in Fairbanks, Alaska on August 18, 1959. Rollie coached and taught history in Plainview and then Floydada. In 1977, he made the transition to school administrator. The family, now including sons Gary and John Mark, moved to Perryton, Texas when Rollie accepted the position of assistant high school principal. A few years later, Rollie moved over to Central Elementary, Perryton, as principal. In 1985, the family moved to Ector, Texas, to be near Ann’s elderly parents, where Rollie returned to the gym and classroom. Shortly after becoming grandparents, Rollie and Ann moved back to the Texas panhandle, first landing in Borger, where Rollie was the assistant junior high principal and then Fritch as the elementary principal. In 2000, Rollie and Ann retired from Texas teaching but chose one more “education” adventure by accepting a one year contract to teach at an American school in Trinidad/Tobago, Caribbean. In each town the family lived, they found a church home. Rollie served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, and committee member at many of these churches. While their sons were young, the family made trips to Maryland, Michigan and Utah with Builders for Christ. After retirement, Rollie and Ann made numerous mission trips abroad to Russia, Germany, South Africa, Brazil and Hungary. Many of these trips, they taught VBS lessons or did English language camps with children, each time sharing the gospel in many creative ways. Rollie, Dad, Pop will be missed. He loved to make people laugh and was very good at it. People truly enjoyed being around him and hearing his stories and jokes. He loved his family deeply and was incredibly proud of them. He also had a great passion for sports, whether listening to them on the radio or watching on TV. He eventually learned to play golf and later took up cornhole. Above all, he loved the time spent with family, especially game night. From the stories he told to his funny faces, Rollie always knew how to brighten up a room. He was a man of God, serving the Lord through his church, missions, and the way he loved and led his family. Rollie’s legacy will continue to live through his loved ones including wife Ann, sons and daughters-in-law Gary and Kim, John Mark and Jennifer, all of Perryton, Texas. Grandchildren : Lisa of Abilene, Texas, David and Katie of Rogers, Arkansas, Kevin of Bentonville, Arkansas, Tori and Aidan Petty of Pampa, Texas, and Emily of Perryton, Texas. PSALMS 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Linda Lou Woods

Linda Lou Woods of Bonham, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 18th, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on April 3rd, 1941, to W.O. Wilborn and Mattie Wilborn in Mineral Wells, Linda was a proud Texan through and through. She grew up alongside her older brother, David, whose passing at 18 left an indelible mark on her life. Linda’s formative years were rich with enduring friendships and treasured memories, especially her close bond with her best friend, Shari. Known for her adventurous spirit, Linda’s love for life was perhaps best captured in her legendary tales of racing her beloved black ’57 Chevy, a symbol of her independence and zest for adventure. Linda grew up in a loving home, with many Sundays at church, where she played the organ. Some of her fondest memories were family vacations to Ruidoso, New Mexico, where she and David rode horses while their parents played golf. Linda’s father supplied jukeboxes across Texas, fueling her lifelong love of music, particularly her devotion to Elvis Presley. After High School, she spent a year or so at the University of North Texas before moving to Dallas. There, she worked at LD Brinkman, a flooring company, where she handled their accounting and kept their books. She also worked at Foley’s Dept Store, where she enjoyed selling jewelry. She agreed that Diamonds were a girl’s best friend, and in her view, the bigger, heavier, and more Expensive the piece, the more she liked it and had to have it. Throughout her life, Linda experienced both love and heartache. She married several times and outlived her husbands. Among them was William “Bill” Mahaley, a banker, with whom she shared two daughters, Heather and Holly. Heather married and had two daughters, Hannah and Kate, while Holly married and had two sons, Connor and Ty. Later in life, Linda found companionship with Harold B. Woods, a retired colonel. Their nearly five years together were filled with warmth, laughter, and memorable stories. Linda cherished her family and the time she spent with those she loved most. Linda lived life on her own terms, with authenticity and few regrets. In her final months, guided by friends and her church community, Linda found comfort in prayer and faith, often reciting the Lord’s Prayer with those beside her. Linda will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, wit, and loyalty to friends and family. She leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and cherished memories. While she will be deeply missed, we celebrate her journey, knowing she is reunited with her parents, brother, and perhaps her favorite ’57 Chevy. Services were held at Wise Funeral Home on Saturday, October 3rd at 1 pm.

God’s Garden God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

The Gathering Of God’s People

Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas Hebrews 10:24-25 commands us to “consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25, ESV) In a world that tells us we can worship from anywhere and believe on our own terms, the writer of Hebrews gives a simple, loving command: don’t stop gathering. This is not a rule meant to burden us. It is a gift meant to sustain us. Gathering helps us grow. Spiritual growth was never meant to happen in isolation. When we sing together, pray together, and sit under the preaching of God’s Word

together, the Spirit shapes us in ways private devotion alone cannot. Coals pulled from the fire grow cold quickly, but kept together they stay aflame. Corporate worship also reminds us that we belong to a body, not just a belief. Gathering brings encouragement. Every Sunday, someone walks through our doors carrying a heavy burden: a diagnosis, a broken relationship, a season of doubt. Your presence, your handshake, your prayer, and your “I’m glad you’re here” may be the very thing God uses to lift them. And you will often find that when you come needing encouragement, God has placed it in the person sitting beside you. Gathering provides accountability. The text tells

us to “stir up one another to love and good works.” That takes relationship. As we walk together, we notice when someone is drifting and gently call them back. We celebrate victories and bear one another’s failures with grace. In a church family, no one has to fight sin or discouragement alone. Hebrews reminds us that the Day of the Lord is drawing near, and the closer we get, the more we need one another. So, may we all make the gathering of God’s people a priority, not an afterthought. Today, we gather as the family of God, and we are better together.

Hello everyone! This week’s devotion comes from Titus 2:13-14. In this passage, the apostle Paul encourages us to live with the expectation and anticipation of the return of Jesus Christ. The phrase glorious appearing, in this context, refers to the future appearing of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, in glory. For us, as believers, His return should not be something that we dread, but rather something to be highly anticipated. Jesus willingly gave His own life for us through His death upon the cross. The word redeem means to buy back or to set free. Jesus came to this world to deliver us from the bondage and power of sin. The word peculiar, in this context, does not mean odd or

weird. It speaks of a special, treasured people who belong to the Lord. He desires believers to be spiritually cleansed and fully dedicated to Him. Lastly, bcause the Lord Jesus Christ has saved us, we ought to geniunely desire to what is right and pleasing in the sight of the Lord. Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Good works are not currency for salvation; they are the evidence of a life changed by Jesus Christ. In summary, this passsage connects Christ’s return with His redemption. We highly anticipate His coming because He gave His life to save us, cleanse

us, make us His own, and create in us a desire to live for Him. In 1876, Philip P. Bliss wrote this classic hymn that comes from the message in this passage. “I will sing of my Redeemer and his wondrous love to me; on the cruel cross he suffered, from the curse to set me free. I will sing of my Redeemer and his heavenly love for me; he from death to life has brought me, Son of God, with him to be. Sing, O sing of my Redeemer! With his blood he purchased me; on the cross he sealed my pardon, paid the debt, and made me free.”

Risen With Christ

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

The apostle Paul encouraged Christians who God had “raised up” (Ephesians 2:6), to set their sights and affections on spiritual things. He encouragd those that had been “baptized into Christ” (Galatians 3:27) to mortify sins. He urges those who have had been “baptized” and “washed away their sins” (Acts 22:16), to put on the new man. Paul, once called Saul, admonished those that had repented, to let “God rule in your heart” (Colossian 3:15). He taught those that had been “born again” (John 3:3), to “do all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Colossian 3:17). Christians are to “seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1). They are to make this their priority. Jesus demanded “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). We are reminded that “bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto

all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” (1 Timothy 4:8). Christians are to “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2). We are to “obey from the heart” (Rom 6:17). We are to have a “love of the truth” (2 Thessalonians 2:10). We must set our affections so that God’s “commandments are not grievous” (1 John 5:3). Christians must “mortify” sins (Colossians 3:5). Paul gives a list of sins to get rid of in our lives (Colossians 3:5), these things must “not be once named among you, as becometh saints” (Ephesians 5:3), because these “things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience” (Colossians 3:6). Christians art to “put on the new man” (Colossians 3:10). We are told to think differently now, “be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2).

We are reminded to think spiritually, “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (Galatians 5:22-23) Christians are to “let the peace of God rule in your hearts” (Colossian 3:15). Then, Paul reminds Christians that we “are called in one body” (Colossians 3:15). Jesus reconciled Jew and Gentile “unto God in one body by the cross” (Ephesians 2:16) and “preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh” (Ephesians 2:17). Christians must be obedient to Christ, “whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Colossian 3:17). We are told that Jesus, “became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:9). You are invited to hear lessons from God’s Word, at the Ivanhoe church of Christ Lectureship, October 25-28, 2026. Sunday 9:30am, 10:30am, and 2:30pm and Monday through Wednesday 7:30pm.
