Volunteers from Bonham joined the quarter of a million people who are walking in towns across the United States to draw attention to the fight for suicide prevention. The annual Bonham Out of the Darkness Walk, hosted by the Glaser Family Charitable Foundation was held at Legacy Ridge Country Club on Oct. 2nd. This

The Bonham Out of the Darkness Walk is one of more than 550 Out of the Darkness Overnight, Community and Campus Walks being held nationwide this year. The walks are expected to unite more than 300,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts. Last year, these walks raised over $21 million for suicide prevention. This year this local walk, raised over $14,000 and had 215 participants.

Did you see them? All dressed up in red, purple, and pink as they floated through the city streets during the Fannin County Parade?

Perhaps you danced a little as you heard their accompanying theme song, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun!” What you didn’t know is how they were also hosting a young French woman on her first trip to America. Aline Giacobbi, featured in the photo with the big smile, came to Bonham to experience American life. Though she’s only been here a few days, her common phrase has become, “it’s just like in the movies!” She repeated that phrase when she saw a yellow school bus, a Sheriff deputy wearing cowboy boots and a Stetson hat, and when she smiled and waved at residents lining the parade route in Bonham. Next stop, the county fair!

Fannin County Commissioners Court – 6/30/20 02-07-17 Justice Center Plans/Texoma Counseling Resource

By Rose Schwartz Tuesday, Oct 5, 2021, County Judge Randy Moore called to order at 9:00 a.m. the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. A quorum was established as all County Commissioners and County Judge were present. The invocation was led by Pastor Jason Points of the 1st Baptist Church of Trenton. Pledges were led by Major James Manis, Retired.

4. Introductions: There were no introductions.

5. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding Courthouse Restoration: Judge Moore read the update as follows: EXTERIOR: Patching stone on the West side and installing entry stone pilaster on the South side; Install stone veneers at building base along South; Install window brick mold and seal outside on windows.

INTERIOR: Finish veneer plaster in the stairwell and 3rd level; Finish electrical rough on 1st level ceiling; Close drywall ceilings on 2nd level; Tape and bed in Courtroom ceiling and 3rd level; Install lower window sashes, counterweights, and more windows throughout.

After reading the update, Judge Moore commented on how it looks like the work should be being completed by the end of December with people being able to move into their offices by then.

6. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve Proclamation naming October 2021 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Fannin County: This was passed on till later in the month.

7. Discussion with Texoma Community Center (TCC) regarding the services they provide: Senior Director of Children’s and Crisis Services of Texoma Community Center, Loren Hervey, MS, LPCS gave a report about the services available to the citizenry of Cooke, Fannin, and Grayson counties by the Texoma Community Center.

After explaining her credentials and the role she plays at TCC, she stated how they are the local mental health authority and how mental health services can be had by those in need regardless of their ability to pay. Noting that they not only provide mental health help but have knowledge of resources that can provide other needed assistance someone may have, like housing or employment help. Law enforcement primarily refers individuals with needs to them as does the Fannin County Hospital Authority, but her purpose for coming to the Commissioners Court was to inform others of the licensed mental health services offered by the TCC, especially for the children who need counseling and other care. One of the questions asked was how long it takes for an online referral made by an officer

to get help for someone in need. She answered that sometimes, if made during business hours, a caseworker can be assigned the same or next business day but there is a 24/7 crisis line that can be utilized for immediate needs.

Children are especially prioritized. Online referrals can be made at texomacc.org.

8. Discussion and presentation by Eikon Architecture regarding options for a Fannin County Justice Center: Judge Moore explained that while he and Commissioner Magness were at a Judge/Commissioners meeting in Waco, he came across the booth where EIKON was presenting the services they provide to Texas Counties.

During a discussion with them, Judge Moore was told they could provide, at no cost to the county, an estimate/ presentation on the Justice Center utilizing the former Brookshires location. President of the company Brad Isbell and Managing Executive Architect Gregory Schon of EIKON came to the podium and presented the court with a multi-paged color pro-

posal complete with the proposed architectural drawings of their vision of the work needed to be done to convert the old Brookshire site into a modern Justice Center construction. Citing 30 years of experience with civic projects, Mr. Isbell stated they pride themselves in being budget-conscious, are experts in design and construction, and have completed many creative constructions.

During their presentation, they gave the advantages of using the existing site of the former Brookshires as good visibility and great access from the highway; sufficient space for program, parking, and building expansion; secure staff parking in rear, a new roof, and availability of bonus building for additional uses. The negatives they cited were the current appearance, paving in need of repair, drainage needing attention, and a new HVAC. With that said, Mr. Schon described the plans presented to the court. Stating that a new building would cost approximately $450 to $600 a square foot and end up costing the

county $21.6 million to $28.8 million for a 48k to 51k sq ft building. He explained how for a cost of $200 to $350 a square foot, they could provide the county with a professional, modern facility for $9.6 million to $16.8 million with the same square footage. Discussion ensued with various questions posed including one from an online listener.

9. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve minutes from 09/28/2021 (R), 09/14/2021 (S), and 08/03/2021 (R): Motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve minutes.

Discussion, consideration, and action to ratify 2021 Capital Credit distribution amounts ($19,083.33 to $22,899.99) and the number of Chambers of Commerce from 5 to 4 as approved on 09/28/2021: Judge Moore explained that a mathematical error was made in the previous calculation of $19,083.33 going to the five entities after deducting the cost of the benches for the Courthouse.

He stated that instead of that figure, $22,899.99 would be given to each of the five entities decided on during last week’s court with one of the $22,899.99 portions being divided by four instead of five Chambers of Commerce

Commissioner Magness made the motion to ratify the change with Commissioner Self seconding and the motion passed.

11. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding the burn ban for Fannin County: Fannin County Emergency Management Coordinator Troy Hudson, explained why the recent rain was not sufficient to lift the burn ban.

Commissioner Magness made the motion to extend the burn ban one week.

Honey Grove High School was built by the Paris M.E. in 1874. Isaac Clark was the principal. Prof. Clark left after a few years and the school was closed.

Prof. Simeon Venable Wall (Grad. of University of Virginia) and Aid-de-Camp to Pres. Jefferson Davis of the Confederacy moved to Honey Grove. He along with his wife and older children re-opened the closed school ca.1882. The school was renamed the Wall School. It was successful until public schools were introduced into Texas. Date 1874

A citizen asked about signs regarding the burn ban and after some discussion including Judge Moore thanking the paper for getting the word out so swiftly about the burn ban, a motion was passed to extend the burn ban one week.

13. Public Forum: A citizen of Ravenna came to the podium and after handing out leaflets of information to the court, recited scripture Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. After his narration, he first noted that any wishing to view his supporting documentation could request them at TheVoiceofFanninCounty@Gmail.com.

He then went on to describe the conversations documenting the potentially dangerous repercussions that can occur from the vaccines and the negative discoveries made by medical professionals of blood from the vaccinated, recorded in the latest undercover videos by Project Veritas and at DrZandreBotha.com.

He commented on the tone of communistic statements made by current politicians and Dr. Fauci by comparing their statements of “doing things for the common good before the individual” to similar statements made by Hitler and other dictators. He ended by encouraging people to speak up and quoted Mathew 5:14.

Next to speak was another citizen of Ravenna who began by thanking the court for the opportunity to speak and for standing up for the people of Fannin County by signing the Resolution supporting Governor Abbott’s ban on the vaccine mandate. She then commented on three people who were fired from local news station channel 12 in Grayson County for refusing to take a vaccine and her dismay that many people are losing their jobs for refusing the vaccine.

She went on to give information obtained from American Freedom Rights Attorney Thomas Renz about how the number of Medicare patients who have died within 14 days of receiving a vaccine is 48,465. She stated Attorney Thomas Renz obtained this information through government whistleblowers from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. She stated the question has been raised as to “how were these

Commissioner Lackey echoed Commissioner Self’s statement, encouraged everyone to go to our County Fair and support all their hard work, and thanked everyone for attending the meeting. Judge Moore began by explaining what the order for prohibition of outdoor burning means and stated that there are excep-

tions that include burning in the NTMWD water line.

Another group included in the exceptions would be the Lake Ralph Hall Upper Trinity River Group as they would be responsible for any burns inside the clear ground around their basins. He stated any schools wishing to have any bonfires may do so as long as someone from the Fire Department is onsite and can use the bonfire as Fire Department training. In answer to a question about someone wanting to burn a pasture for agriculture, Judge Moore stated that could only be done under the supervision of a prescribed burn manager who

is onsite. He said the Fair should be a great event and folks should pay attention to the times. He also cited Covid numbers as being 61 active cases which is a reduction from 67 in the previous week. He stated there are currently 136 fatalities with the hospitalization rate down to 14.33% from last week’s 17.85%. He noted it is good that there seems to be a downward trend.

Commissioner Lane who attended the meeting asked if notifications could be sent out to the landowners whose properties are located within the buffer zone. Discussion ensued about the best diplomatic and courteous way to go about informing people who live within the 5,000 ft Buffer Zone of possible violations that may currently exist or occur in the future if there is no knowledge of the regulations that exist for their property. After much discussion and suggestions, it was decided that Ms. Hop-

kins would be speaking with Attorney Newt Cunningham and the Fannin County Appraisal district to go over solutions for the problem and for decisions to be made regarding revisions needed in that section of the rules dealing with guidelines for code violations. (Writers note: Per Ms. Hopkins, any county resident who is not sure if their property falls within that 5,000-foot buffer zone, can call her at 903-449-4220 and she will be more than happy to help them by looking up the location of their property on the Fannin Cad website and the interactive map for that information.)

The regulations relating to properties within the 5,000 ft Buffer Zone, came into effect

October 30, 2018.

Current issues: A. Commercial auto shop and residence built on one acre of property zoned agriculture, no permitting obtained and does not meet setbacks: Di Hopkins spoke about a landowner who has a mechanic shop on his property that is currently zoned Agriculture and is not in compliance with the Bois D’Arc Lake zoning regulations. A citizen of Fannin County who spoke for the landowner explained how his friend had not been aware that his property fell within the Buffer Zone but is willing to do whatever is needed to become compliant with the rules. Not knowing if the landowner may be exempt

as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children who have been removed from their home due to abuse and neglect. The district judge appoints CASA volunteers to serve as the Guardian ad Litem for each child who has been placed in the state’s custody. In that role, CASA advocates investigate the child’s situation, prepare written reports to the court and advocate for the child’s best interest in court hearings and other settings. CASA also advocates and monitors to ensure that all educational, medical, mental health and other needs are met.

CASA is one program of several programs for abused and neglected children that are operated by the Fannin County Children’s Center.

“Jake and his team from State Farm were a huge help with our 25th Annual School

Supply Drive,” said Sandy Barber, Executive Director of the Fannin County Children’s Center. “Not only did they donate boxes and boxes full of backpacks filled with supplies, they helped a lot on the day of the big drive thru giveaway. They braved the heat to help get paperwork

completed, filled orders and carried backpacks full of supplies to the cars.”

“There are too many children in Fannin County that lack the basic necessities,” said Shockley. “Anything we can do to help those kids have the same opportunities that we were so blessed to have growing up is something we want to be a part of! If a new backpack and some new school supplies helps them feel proud and gets their year kicked off to a good start, maybe that will be a start to making a difference in their lives.”

In all, 617 kids got backpacks filled with school supplies thanks to Shockley and many other generous donors and dedicated volunteers.

“It was great event that the Children’s Center put on,” said Shockley. “We were proud to be a part of it.”

“We are grateful for the partnership we have formed with Jake and his team,” said Barber.

“Looking ahead, they have also already pledged to be a sponsor for Justice Is Served and volunteer with our Christmas Drive. It’s folks like them who give and help how they can that make our work possible.”

The Children’s Center is currently seeking sponsors and auction items for their big fundraising event called Justice Is Served. The Center is also seeking volunteers to help in a variety of roles.

Hello again citizens of Fannin County and beyond! Let’s talk about Peddlers and Solicitation. I will be addressing the City Limits of Bonham, if you reside in the county or another city please check with your local government on any ordinances.

You may ask, what is the definition of a Peddler (Vendor) and a Solicitor. A Peddler (Vendor) is carrying goods, merchandise, food, or offers of services for sale, or representations of goods or services for sale to be delivered as a separate transaction. A Solicitor is taking or attempting to take orders for the sale of goods, merchandise, food for future delivery, or offers of services to be performed immediately or in the future, whether or not such person has, carries, or exposes for sale a sample of the subject of the sale or not.

I’m sure at some point you have answered the door to one of these individuals, but did you know they must have a license to do so and rules to fol-

low while conducting their business. Let me explain, the Peddler ( Ve n d o r ) or Solicitor must meet certain requirements to obtain a license. Once the requirements are met and submitted to Bonham Police Chief Mike Bankston and only after his approval, will a license be issued.

Everyone going door- to-door for the business must have a license with them to present upon request and the license is only good through the period requested, not to exceed one year. The hours in which they may conduct their business is between 9am and 5pm, with no exceptions. If you ask them to leave, they must leave. No individual may conduct themselves in an unlawful manner to constitute a breach of the peace or a menace to the public health, safety, or general welfare of the public.

There are some exemptions, sales or solicitations by local nonprofit organizations, such as student or school support organizations, church groups, Boy Scouts, civic clubs, agencies of federal, state, or local

governments.

So, the next time someone comes to your door, ask to see their license, and check the expiration date, if they can’t produce one, contact the police department. Have they arrived beyond the permitted hours of operation? Do you feel harassed or pressured or have they refused to leave upon request? Then please contact the police department at 903583-2141. We do not want to interfere with anyone selling or soliciting door to door and following all the rules, but we want our community to feel safe.

Oakwood Cemetery News

September was a busy month for Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove. Several large trees were trimmed and the brush was removed from the cemetery. October is the second of our two annual cleanup months to remove old flowers and broken or unsightly objects from the cemetery.

Cemetery Association in September for the following: Jackie Maroney, Dorothy Nell Hawkins, Gene Gandy, and Peggy Stanley. Property Tax Statements (Bills) for 2021 Tax Year

Press Release - The collections phase of the tax calendar for 2021 has arrived. Soon, property tax statements (tax bills) will be mailed to all owners of property in Fannin County. Property owners are encouraged to utilize contactless payment options to pay property taxes during COVID: Included with the tax statement is a self-addressed envelope to remit property tax payments. Utilizing the mail will reduce the risk of exposure to our staff and the public and provide a simple and efficient way to pay your property taxes. If you mail your payment and would like a receipt, simply request one with your payment and provide your email address. Other contactless property tax payment methods include credit card and e-check which may be accessed on our website at www.fannincad.org.

Contactless payment options are the best way to keep you and our staff healthy.

If you own property in Fannin County and do not receive your bill by the end of October, please contact the Fannin Central Appraisal District’s collections department at 903-583-8701 to verify your account information and avoid possible delinquency.

Things to know regarding your

tax statement/bill: Bills are due upon receipt and will become delinquent if not paid before February 1st, 2022. It is important to timely pay your property tax bill and avoid these additional costs. Delinquent taxes accumulate penalties and interest and may result in a lawsuit.

Property owners are encouraged to open these statements sooner than later and be proactive in communicating any payment arrangements with the District’s collections staff.

NOTE: The appraisal district uses the address indicated on the deed to send notices, bills and other mailings. If the current owner’s actual mailing address is different from what is indicated on the deed, the owner has the responsibility to inform the appraisal district of the change in writing. Simply go to our website at www.fannincad. org click the “Forms” tab and click the “Change of Address Request”. Please do not let the simple process of updating your address keep you from being informed of important property tax matters.

Property owners with multiple accounts: Paying property taxes on multiple accounts can be confusing. Owners of mul-

tiple accounts are responsible for ensuring they have accounted for all their properties. Owners of multiple properties often have different names on the accounts. Some accounts may be in a company name, a trust, or in various forms of a name (such as J. Smith, John Smith, and Jonathan Smith etc.). Some owners have differing mailing addresses as well. In short, the collectors do not own the property, are not responsible for the tax, or to determine how much a person decides to pay. During this phase the collectors receive and post payments and issue receipts. If a person requires assistance in this area, they should make arrangements to come to the Appraisal District’s office early (OctoberNovember) and not wait until the last week of December or January to sort through their tax statements.

Fannin County Republican Women Meeting – 2022-2023 Board Members Elected – 2022 Candidates Speak

By Rose Schwartz Monday, October 4, 2021, President of the FCRW, Rosemary Clemons began October’s meeting at 6:00 p.m. after the meet and greet potluck concluded.

The meeting was held at the Clarence White Memorial Family Center. Once the meeting began, District Director and County Chairperson Melanie Grammar led a prayer for guidance for the nation and the club’s meeting. District Judge Laurie Blake led the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag and Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple led the Texas State Pledge.

Immediately following the pledges, President Clemons listed the 2021 Board members, noted the past meeting’s minutes were emailed to members on Sunday and called for the various reports to be given.

Treasurer Karen Butler gave the Treasurer’s Report and noted the dessert Coconut Cake that would be going to the highest bidder at the end of the meeting was made and donated by Candidate for Justice of the Peace, Pct 1, Louise Goodwater. (I later found out that said cake had four layers with a raspberry

filling!) Immediately following the Treasurer’s Report, Vice President of Membership Sandy Hood commented on how nice it was to see a packed room, stated there were 91 members and 61 associate members for 2021. She also announced they were currently taking dues for 2022 memberships and renewals. To encourage early sign ups, she said they would be having drawings November, December and February from those early membership names for a $25.00 gift card. She also encouraged donations for the ongoing collection for the Texas Border Patrol of sunscreen, masks, antibacterial wipes and protective gloves.

President Clemons asked all the county’s elected officials attending the meeting to stand and state their names and the offices they hold and any races they will be participating in. Fannin County Court at Law Judge Charles Butler noted he would be seeking re-election as did Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Bob Clemons. Precinct 16 County Chair Doug Kaupf announced he was seeking the Commissioner’s seat for Precinct 4, April Gibbs announced she was seeking

Fannin County Treasurer David Woodson announced he would be running for re-election, Louise Goodwater announced she would be running for Justice of the Peace, Pct 1 and Attorney Newt Cunningham stated he would be running for County Judge. President Clemons also announced 409 copies of the U.S. Constitution, partially funded by Senator Bob Hall, were distributed to 5th graders at Bonham, Dodd City, Fannindel, Sam Rayburn, Leonard and Trenton schools.

Vice President of Campaign Activities, Commissioner Edwina Lane asked members to be sure and submit any hours spent campaigning, to her as she needs to have those hours turned in by October 15.

VP of Legislature, Joyce Buchanan spoke to call attention to five important issues in the Third Legislative Special Session. The first and biggest issue being the redistricting issue and if approved would move our county to Senate District 1 which is Bryan Hughes district and add another county to Representative Reggie Smith. De-

District Director Melanie Grammar announced the FCRW membership dues include membership in TFRW (Texas Federation of Republican Women) and reminded members to be sure FCRW had everyone’s correct email address in order to get notices from both clubs. She encouraged members to sign up to work in FCRW’s booth at the County Fair Wednesday thru Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. and all-day Saturday.

She then explained how the redistricting issue is affecting the upcoming election and said no-one has filed yet to be a candidate in the local Republican primaries though they have filed their treasurer for campaign funding. It is possible that the March 1st primary date may be changed due to the redistricting issue which has affected the filing period. Legislation has not yet decided the redistricting issue, so the last filing date

Jerry Fisher was next to speak with an SREC (State Republican Executive Committee) update. Jerry said five resolutions were passed in August and stressed the importance of making a phone call when asked to do so as your voice counts. She stated there is still an ongoing fight opposing mandates for vaccines and masks, she noted the resolution opposing Proposition 2 and the resolution encouraging the passage of HB 19. Jerry noted three of eight legislative priorities have passed which are Constitutional Carry, the Heartbeat Bill and Religious Freedom to keep churches from being shut down due to the pandemic. She stated they are still pleading with Governor Abbott to ban gender modification of children and the critical race theory from schools. She said those interested could get a letter from her for their church regarding covid vaccines and for their school regarding critical race theory.

President Clemons explained the rules involving the nomination for the offices of FCRW and then asked the

Immediately following the election of the 2022-2023 FCRW Officers, Rosemary asked the two candidates for the Fannin County District Clerk’s Office, April Gibbs, and Shonda Magness to speak.

Following the introduction of April and Shonda and their presentation of why they believe they are deserving of your vote, Louise Goodwater who is running for Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 also spoke of her experience and qualifications to fill the office of JP Precinct 1.

Before concluding the meeting, it was announced that Newt Cunningham was the winner of the four-tiered Coconut Cake (with raspberry filling,) with a bid of $150.00 and that the next FCRW meeting will be held Monday, November 1st. The meeting was adjourned at 7:00 p.m.

KATHERINE LOUISE HAMPTON

SUSAN TOWLE

Susan Towle entered eternal life on Friday at home surrounded by prayerful friends and her loving husband Jack. Visitation and the Holy Rosary was held at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 6th from 6 to 8 PM. The Rite of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, October 7th at 10:30 AM, with Fr. Gavin Vaverek officiating.

A reception followed immediately after Mass in the St. Michael’s Activity Center. The Interment was held at 2PM that day in Honey Grove at the DJM Formation Center.

Susan Elaine (Ferrone) Towle was born on July 3, 1943 in Boston, MA. the fifth of seven children to Dr. Joseph D. Ferrone and Elaine (Poirier) Ferrone. She was raised in a devout Catholic family and was educated by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart from the first grade all through college, graduating from Newton College of the Sacred heart in1965. After spending a year of study in Paris, France, she returned to teach primary grade children in New York City and Pembroke, MA. She married John (Jack) F. Towle in Scituate, MA. June 28, 1969 and soon moved to southern CT. where she was blessed with the births of three beautiful children. Seven years later, the family moved to Dallas, TX. where the children were raised with the spiritual support of the St. Rita Catholic Community for the next twenty eight years. In the early 90’s, Susan and Jack were seeking to grow in the knowledge of their faith and a deepening of their relationship with God. Their prayers were answered when they were introduced to an international Catholic Lay organization by the name of The Disciples of Jesus and Mary (DJM). In 2000, they and a few other Disciples responded to a request by Fr. Santan Pinto, the founder of DJM to secure land in a rural, peaceful setting and construct a Formation Center where DJMs from around the Country could come for spiritual refreshment and renewal.

They found the perfect location in Honey Grove, TX. Since that time, Susan and Jack have resided at the Formation Center, serving as greeters to the countless DJMs from near and far and as guides, assisting those in the two year formation process.

A source of great joy for Susan has been her relationship with her Parish, Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Paris, TX. where she served as a Eucharistic Adorer, a Catechist and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society which provides food for the hungry.

She is survived by her husband Jack, son Gregory Towle and his sons Zane and Sebastian of Austin,TX., daughter Jennifer Cason and her husband Doug and their daughters Ava and Margo Elaine of Greensboro, N.C, Diane Roe and her husband Wilson and their children Lily and Finnegan of Dallas, TX. and brother Dr. Joseph D. (Pat) Ferrone Jr, Needham, MA., sister in Law Jane Ferrone, Valencia, CA., sister Gabrielle Thomas, Carefree,AZ., sister Anna (Stuan) Robertson, Wolfboro, N.H., brother Richard (Cynthia) Ferrone, N.Y.C., brother Michael (Renata) Ferrone, Martha’s Vinyard, MA. and nineteen nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Joseph D. Ferrone, her brother Dan Ferrone and brother in law Philip Thomas. Throughout her life, Susan’s kind and gentle manner served as an inspiration to her family and to all who came to know and love her. We pray for the repose of Susan’s soul and all the souls of the faithful departed. May she rest in peace.

RUBY FAY (YOUNG) LUMPKIN

Bonham- Ruby Fay (Young) Lumpkin, age 96 of Gun Barrel City, TX was born on March 4, 1925 in Goodlett, TX to Willis and Sadie Young. Mrs. Lumpkin passed away on Friday, October 1, 2021 at her residence.

Ruby married Odis Justin Lumpkin on December 23, 1941 in Quanah, TX; he preceded her in death on August 28, 2010. During World War II she was known as a part of the Rosie the Riveter.

Ruby later worked for AT&T as a clerical. She enjoyed full time RVers, was an avid reader, and enjoyed crocheting. Ruby was a

loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, aunt, and friend.

She loved her children, and all her grand children and spent as much time as she could with them. Ruby was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Ruby is survived by son-Larry Lumpkin and wife Susan of Austin, TX; daughter-Cheryl Lumpkin of Gun Barrel City, TX; grandchildren-David Gillespie, Justin Lumpkin and wife Amanda of Scurry, TX, Casey Lumpkin of Gun Barrel City, TX; 10 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to her spouse, she is preceded in death by her parents, son, Dennis Lumpkin, grandson, Matthew Lumpkin, 2 brothers, and 4 sisters.

Graveside services were held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at Forest Grove Cemetery.

Katherine Louise Hampton (but don’t you dare use her middle name!) was born on October 1, 1951 to Ben and Beverly Cole at Camp Pendleton in California, and departed her earthly body, after suffering with ALS for 18 months, on September 29, 2021, two days before her 70th birthday.

She leaves behind Richard “Peter” Hampton, her husband of nearly 46 years, son Jeremy (Cathy) Koons, and daughter Jennifer (Chris) Carson, five grandchildren: Colin, Aaron, Brennan, and Raven Carson, and Elizabeth Koons, sisters Marcella London, Cheryl (Dennis) Schnebelen, Karen McNeil, and Michelle (Mike) Breitenberg, brother Daryn (Robin) Cole, numerous nieces and nephews, and yellow lab, Bella. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Ladonna Cole.

Katherine was a master gardener, enjoyed “puttering around” outside, swimming, baking, canning, making family dinners, and listening to her grandsons sing and play music, and watching her granddaughter dance. She was also an avid shopper and crafter.

She spent several years planning and co-leading group trips around the United States for the Foretravel Motorhome Club.

She liked to research farming/ growing techniques, new crafting trends, and enjoyed spending time with, and hosting tea for, the ladies of her Bible study group.

Katherine took pride in decorating her home and was an accomplished seamstress.

A memorial service was held on Monday, October 4, 2021 at 10 a.m. at the King’s Trail Cowboy Church in Whitewright, Tx. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the ALS Association of Texas in memory of Katherine.

TOYCE EDWIN PHILLIPS

Toyce Edwin Phillips, 72, of Honey Grove, Texas, passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2021. Toyce was born in Cooper, Texas on June 3, 1949, to John Henry Phillips and Jackie (Cummins) Finley.

He served his country and the Navy, boldly, through two terms in Vietnam. Following his military service, he taught cabinetmaking at Garland High School.

In his later years, he served as the Tax Appraiser/Collector

for Delta County. He was an avid story-teller, and devoted husband and father. He reveled in his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, and they in him.

He lived an exemplary life filled with joy and laughter until the day God called him home. He had a servant’s heart and loved preaching the word of God and ministering to those in need.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Joann, a beloved great-grandchild, and his loyal dog, Max. Survivors include his wife, Wincie (Morgan) Phillips, daughters Wincie Moore and Rebecca Toon, six grandchildren: Andrew Toon, Glen Moore (wife, Hailie), Jonathan Moore (wife, Miranda), David Moore, Baleigh Toon, and Joseph Moore (wife, Jamie), two great-grandchildren: William and Kayden Moore, a much anticipated new arrival due in April, six siblings, and more friends than he could count.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 pm Saturday October 9, 2021 at Klondike Church, County Rd 2020, Klondike, Texas with Rev. Guille Seigler, Rev. Terry Bryan, and Rev. Gary Everett officiating. Interment will follow at a later date at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, TX. Flowers in his honor can be delivered directly to Klondike Church or, if you prefer, donations made in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project.

KELTON “DOC” LEE COMPTON

Bonham-Kelton “Doc” Lee Compton, age 82, of Bailey, TX was born on August 23, 1939 in Corsicana, TX to William Franklin and Mary (Mitchum) Compton.

Mr. Compton passed away on Monday, October 4, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Doc married Sandra “Sandy” Earlene (Jones) Compton on July 21, 1983 in Denton, TX. Doc was a truck driver and hauled heavy equipment. He loved his wife, kids, and grandkids and being around people. Doc loved horses and trail rides. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Doc loved the Cross Trails Cowboy Church where he was a member.

Mr. Compton is survived by his wife Sandy Compton of the home, sons, Donald Compton and wife Pam of Bailey, TX; William Bubba Compton and wife Cindy of Blue Ridge, TX; Kelton Compton of Leonard, TX; and Scott Lemasters of Las Vegas, NM and daughter, Stephanie Scott and husband Clark of Whitesboro, TX, sisters, Linda Riley, and Penny Compton; along with many grandkids, great grandkids and extended family members and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Terrie Bolton, grandson, Tyler Compton, and brother, Frank Compton.

RUBYNELLE (MELTON) POWE

A memorial service for Rubynelle (Melton) Powe will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, McKinney, TX at 1:00 PM Saturday, October 16, 2021.

Rubynelle passed away at Faith Presbyterian Hospice T. Boone Pickens Center on September 29, 2021 after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

A graveside service will follow at 4:30 PM Saturday at Moore’s Chapel Cemetery, Bonham, TX under the direction of Cooper Sorrells Funeral Home. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Michael Early, Christopher Powe, Joshua Powe, Bodhi Powe and Liam Schneider. Interment will follow at Moore’s Chapel Cemetery. Father Andrew Van Kirk of McKinney, TX will officiate both services.

Rubynelle was born on March 2, 1939, in Honey Grove, TX to John Lewallen “Doc” Melton and Pauline Thompson. When she was 8 years old she was blessed with a loving stepfather when her mother married James Melvin Curtis. Rubynelle was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church of McKinney, TX. She graduated from Bonham High School in 1957. Following graduation she attended Texas Women’s University in Denton. In 1968, Rubynelle moved to Lubbock, Texas and raised a family. In 1977, Rubynelle graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing with her RN diploma.

She later achieved a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Texas A&M University (Canyon) and a Master’s degree in Nursing Administration from the University of Texas (El Paso).

While working on her advanced nursing education, Rubynelle worked in various roles and specialties Director of Nursing at Community Hospital in Lubbock and Director of Nursing at Labette Health in Parson’s, KS. She ended her career as Director of Health Services at the Lubbock State (School) Supported Living Center, retiring in 2001.

Rubynelle participated in a formal women’s organization of the Episcopal Church known as The Order of the Daughters of the King. Rubynelle was very active in the group from St. Paul’s on the Plains Episcopal Church of Lubbock, TX and St. Andrews Episcopal Church of McKinney, TX. Rubynelle recently celebrated her 18th anniversary of service in this organization and that service and fellowship remained a cornerstone in her life.

Graveside Services for Albert “Al” Charles Daniels, age 80, of Arlington, Texas were held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at Dodd City Cemetery in Dodd City, Texas under the direction of Wise Funeral Home.

Pastor Eric Johnson officiated. Al passed away Thursday morning, September 30, 2021, lovingly surrounded by family at his residence in Arlington, Texas.

Al was born March 21, 1941, in Shafter, California, the son of Claudie Daniels and Velma Marie Crumpton Daniels. He was a Master Jeweler for 49 years.

He loved his craft and would often make jewelry for family and friends. Al even made the wedding ring for his beloved wife, Patsy. They had been together for 31 years prior to his passing.

Al enjoyed deep sea fishing, often entering in tournaments. He absolutely treasured everything about the water, it’s no wonder he married a Pisces. He was a wonderful husband, father, and friend and will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, twin, Alban Clarence Daniels and J. C. Daniels, and sisters, Betty White and Ruth Barrera.

Born July 10th 1978 to Mother Jane Marie Mackey and Father Tony Pete Rickman.

Tonie Marie ascended to heaven in the early morning of September 29th 2021 at her home with her husband Leslie Paul and her puppy Spartacus at her side.

Tonie Marie made an impact on so many with the time she had; 43 years 2 months and 18 days.

Tonie Marie born in Paris Texas weighing only 4 lb 2 Oz and she was already Dynamite. She grew up in Brookston Texas with Tonya her sister and a trailer load of cousins.

Tonie Marie attended Chisum High School and Paris Junior College she played volleyball basketball track softball and was also a member of the FFA. Tonie Marie love to be a part of the community and love to be around people she never saw anyone as popular or not popular she just treated everyone with compassion and was always fast with a joke to share or comment just to make you laugh.

Tonie Marie’s passion for cooking was like no other, she worked at Burger Band in Paris for over 10 years then continue to indulge in her cooking abilities in 2011, when she moved to Mabank Texas where she was Chef and Creative Manager at Jalopy Joe’s Gourmet Popcorn until she was no longer able to work as in life, she gave her best fight.

Cherlin was born on February 3, 1942, in Bonham, Texas, the daughter of Leon King and Martha Stapp King. She graduated from Bailey High School. Cherlin worked at Seven Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in the Laundry Department and also worked for the Bonham Cotton Mill. She married Jerry Wayne Franklin on June 11, 1966, in Oklahoma. They were married 44 years prior to his passing. Cherlin enjoyed watching tv and movies.

She and Jerry liked traveling and dining out. Cherlin listened to Christian music and was an active member the Solid Rock First Pentecostal Church of God in Bonham. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Tammy Terese Franklin Barnes, brothers, Frank King, Joe King, Bobby King, and Benny King.

Bonham-Evelyn Gray (Siler) Hamby, age 88, was born on May 30, 1933 in Bonham, Texas to Andrew Jackson and Ada Florence (May) Siler. She passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at Seven Oaks Nursing Care Facility.

Evelyn attended school at Danner Community and was a graduate of Bonham High School class of 1950. After graduation she moved to Dallas to attend IBM Keypunch School and became

a keypunch operator.

After returning to Bonham worked at DeRose Manufacturing, Bonham Manufacturing and Fannin Manufacturing. After retirement she volunteered at Stevenson Kindergarten as a teacher’s aide, later she volunteered as a Foster Grandparent at Finley Oates Elementary School. Evelyn was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, and is a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

She is survived by childrenJeff Hamby and wife Karen of Ravenna, TX, Debra Hamby of Malone, TX, Connie Hamby of Denton, TX, Tracy Ragsdale and husband Neal of Plano, TX; grandchildren Josh Rutherford, Desiree Sabrah and husband Brandon, Nicholas Hamby, Courtney Hamby, Steven Mooney, Samantha Mooney, Brittany Hazlewood, and Hailey Hazlewood; great grandchildren Stetson, Justin, Nolan and Bronson; brother-Aubrey Siler and wife Nell of Ravenna, TX; along with numerous additional extended family and friends.

He was always thankful for his eyesight to enjoy God’s beautiful earth. Richard was very talented.

He could build and fix anything and loved working in his yard.

Family was very important to Richard and he enjoyed many family vacation trips, especially to Colorado and other mountain states and Canada. He was lovingly named Poppie by is granddaughter, Jasmin. He was Poppie to Jasmin, her husband Jason, and Jasmin’s sisters Ashlyn, Kayla, and all of their friends.

Bois D’ Arc The graveside service in honor of Jack Richard Keene, 82, of Bonham, Texas was held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at The Willow Wild Cemetery Pavilion, 1220 W 7th St. in Bonham, Texas. The service was conducted by his friend, Dr. Jeff Johnson, and his nephew, Reverend David Johnson.

Jack Richard Keene went with the angels to his Heavenly home on October 3, 2021. He suffered from complications due to Parkinson’s disease for quite some time. Richard was born Friday, October 7, 1938 at S.B. Allen Memorial Hospital, Bonham, Texas to Clyde Duncan “Dick” Keene and Ruby Vern Echols Keene. He attended all Bonham schools and graduated from Bonham High School He met Beatrice Standifer, known as Bea, while they were both attending the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas in October 1959.

Richard and Bea were married June 16, 1961 at Grace Temple Baptist Church on West Oak Street in Denton, Texas. They moved to Bonham and Richard worked there for General Cable Corporation for 39 years before retiring. He loved to hunt and fish, and especially loved the hunting and fishing trips to the mountains of Colorado with his dad and brother, Michael Keith Keene, and his other hunting buddies.

CALEB AMOS BRIAN

Funeral services in honor of Caleb Amos Brian, age 39, of Bonham, Texas were held at 10:00am on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at The Willow Wild Cemetery, preceded by a procession which will begin at 9:45 am from the Wise Funeral Home in Bonham, Texas. Dress will be casual; boots and jeans are welcome as we celebrate his life.

Amos passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2021 in Denison, Texas from an infection following a medical procedure.

Amos was born on February 24, 1982, the son of Aaron Lloyd Brian and Beverly Ann Brown Brian. Amos was the embodiment of what could be summed up as a true Texan, tough, honest, and loyal, in a pair of boots with a hat on his head and a gun on his side. He proudly served as a sheriff’s deputy in Fannin County and then as a guard at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Buster Cole State Jail. Amos was the family go-to electrician, plumber, and “knower of all things construction related”. Under that rough exterior, was the tender heart of a man who loved his family and was so proud of his two sons, a man who never let his niece sneak by without a bear hug, who wasn’t afraid to teach the teenagers how to do the worm, who volunteered to be the life guard on duty at the birthday parties, gave endless tractor rides

While he wasn’t flashy, Amos left behind a lesson for all who knew him. One of the greatest lessons his legacy offered was to appreciate the opportunity to work. Having battled to overcome a long, difficult health tragedy that left him handicapped and unable to work for several years, when many would have surrendered, he never gave up on his desire to return to law enforcement. When he overcame the impossible and was able to work again, he gave it all he had. He wore his uniform with pride. He taught us to be thankful for the strength to work and provide for our families, that it is more than a right, it is a privilege.

Law enforcement was his privilege; fatherhood was his honor.

His words will forever remain: ‘I love you more. I love you most.

I love you best. I loved you first.’

And now, we reply, “We love you always.”

An election to select two new members of the Honey Grove City Council will be held on November 2. Early voting begins October 18 at the Roy Floyd Civic Center (Armory) in Bonham.

A candidate forum will be held on Tuesday, October 12 at 5:30 in Lyday Hall at the Honey Grove Library.

The Forum is sponsored by the Friends of the Honey Grove Library.

Four candidates are vying for 2 places. The two candidates with the highest number of votes will be elected. None of the candidates are incumbents - this is a chance to meet those running.

Bee Careful!

A swarm of bees attacked a rancher utilizing an open top bulldozer to clear brush from his property when he inadvertently ran over their hive. Unable to be removed from his vehicle, a ranch hand covered him in blankets and called emergency services for assistance. Supported by local EMS, Sheriff’s Department, and Eldorado Volunteer Fire Department, Schleicher and Sutton County Game Wardens responded to the incident.

sprayed down the area to remove some of the bees. One of the responding wardens, an avid beekeeper in his spare time, applied his knowledge to reach the rancher. Wearing his personal beekeeping suits, the wardens and sheriff were able to remove the man from the bulldozer. Since the area was inaccessible to EMS vehicles, the wardens cleared their truck and transported the severely stung operator to EMS vehicles who were waiting to take him to the hospital. He recovered from his injuries.

of district play, what’s left is five teams -- Leonard, Bonham, Whitewright, Bells and Howe -- vying for the fourth and final postseason berth.

Leonard hopes this year to

return to the postseason for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.

Bonham aspires to return to the postseason for the third

The Region II-2A meets will occur on Tuesday, Oct. 26, with the girls’ race at noon and boys’ at 12:30 p.m. at Lynn Creek Park at Joe Pool Lake at Grand Prairie.

TRENTON -- Host Trenton again won the District 14-2A varsity girls’ cross country team title and also qualified an individual boy on Oct. 4 for regional competition later this month.

Senior Kayla Wommack, senior Kenzie Wommack, freshman Arianna Martinez,

District cross country meets this week await Fannin County Class 1A and 3A high school cross country runners.

The 23-1A meets will be Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Miller Grove, starting with the junior high girls at 4:30 p.m.

The district locally includes

Dodd City, Ector and Savoy.

Bonham and Leonard will vie at the 11-3A meets on Thursday, Oct. 14, at hostmember Bells, starting at 9 a.m.
