County Judge: Duties and Responsibilities
1/21/25
By Newt Cunningham Fannin County Judge
There are 254 county judges in Texas. One judge for each Texas county. Judges are elected for a four year term of office. Each judge serves as the chief executive officer of their respective county. A judge’s job entails fulfilling numerous administrative, legislative, and judicial duties and responsibilities. Each judge is required to take an oath of office to faithfully execute the duties of county judge and to the best of the judge’s ability to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States and of the State of Texas. While a
judge “must be well informed in the law,” a judge is not required to be an attorney. Continuing education is mandatory, and necessary to stay current with the law and best practices. Generally, the job includes: Administrative and legislative tasks, which include presiding over the county commissioners court and setting its agendas. The county commissioners court is the chief policy making body of a county. Each commissioners court is composed of a judge and four commissioners. The commissioners are also elected officials. The commissioners court adopts ordinances and policies, sets
4/15/25
budgets and tax rates, and approves major purchases. All departmental budgets are set by the commissioners court including those of the sheriff, county clerk, district clerk, etc. It sets salaries. It calls elections, post election notices, and canvass election returns. The commissioners court is responsible for building and maintaining county roads, bridges and other facilities. The judge’s administrative duties and responsibilities also include acting as the county director of emergency management and civil defense, with the authority to declare local disasters and coordinate response efforts. Judicial tasks include
presiding over the county’s constitutional court. In this role the Judge may hear misdemeanor criminal cases, small civil cases probate matters, mental health competency hearing and appeals. The Judge may also perform weddings, magistrations, and inquests. Other tasks falling to the judge include, but are not limited to, serving on various local and regional boards, such as juvenile boards and councils of government. In short, the judge acts as the public face and voice of the county. Being judge is a 24 hour a day 7 day a week commitment. A judge’s leadership is crucial to a county.

It might have been the winter doldrums that did it. You can never be sure of these things. It’s just that … well, Doc is one of those guys who can’t stand to see anyone bored. He claims it’s bad for their inner chemistry, and since he has more initials after his name than anyone else in town, we tend to listen to him. When it happened, we in the inner circle of the World Dilemma Think Tank down at the Mule Barn truck stop thought back on what Doc had said a year ago when the temperature dropped, along with everyone’s spirits.
“In weather like this,” Doc pronounced, stirring sugar into his cup, “a real American would come up with a great hoax.” Those of us sitting at the philosophy counter that morning just nodded, even though we didn’t have a clue. No one wanted to admit it, you see. When the Valley Weekly Miracle hit the street yesterday, we bought one to see how much the editor dared to print, as always, but there in the classifieds was this: “LOST – One gray squirrel,

God Never Changes!
Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas Not long ago, I read that someone had calculated the current rate of change is 100%. That is a fancy way of saying that pretty much everything is always in flux and is always changing. Many of us are resistant to change, and we fight against it. Nevertheless, we live in an ever-changing world. It will still be true for 2026. You can be guaranteed that there will be many changes that will come about in pretty much every area of life. However, the Good News is that as Christians we
serve a Great God that never changes! Malachi 3:6 states, “For I am the Lord, I do not change…” Praise the Lord! He is the same. Always has been. Always will be. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Here are some things that will not change in 2026. In fact, these will NEVER change! 1. God’s nature and character. He will still be sovereign, and we will still be under his providential care. In heaven one day, heavenly beings will forever be declaring: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of His glory.” (Revelation 4:8) 2. His promises. Since God and His Word never change, neither does his promises. 3. His Word. Isaiah 40:8 says, “The grass withers and flowers fade, but the Word of our God endures forever.” 4. Jesus will still be on His throne! The Bible declares that one day, “every knee will bow” and “every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!” (Philippians 2:10-11) Because of all these things, we must never worry, fear, or be anxious about the future! For His Glory, Lyn and Lissa
Our Prayer For the New Year
Hello everyone!
This week’s devotion comes from Philippians 3:13-16. In this passage, the apostle Paul humbly admits that he has not fully reached spiritual perfection yet. Even with years of faithful service behind him, he does not claim to have reached that goal. To forget the things that are behind us means that we shouldn’t hang on to our past sins, failures, or even spiritual successes. Instead, we should keep pressing on toward the goal, just as a runner stretches toward the finish line. Whether your past is good or bad, never let it define you or get in the way of your spiritual growth. Paul describes the Christian life as a race that requires effort, focus, and
perseverance. The goal of the Christian life isn’t comfort, but becoming more like Jesus Christ and faithfully finishing the race. Our reward at the end is eternal life through Jesus Christ. The word perfect, in this context, means spiritually mature. We, as believers, ought to share this mindset of continuous spiritual growth. Throughout our growth we must live consistently with the revealed truth of God and maintain unity in Christ. Our prayer for the new year should be for the Lord to help us keep living out the truth we’ve learned while continuing in our spiritual growth. In 1874, Frances Ridley Havergal wrote this classic hymn the comes from the message in this passage. This really ought to be our prayer
Life in Christ
by Wil Pounds There is life in Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “You will not come to Me that you might have life.” I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” “I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly.” “I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.” The life of the believing sinner is in Jesus Christ. We get life by appropriating the saving grace of God by faith in Christ. There is life by living in Him, trusting in Him, and believing in His grace and power. There is legal life in Jesus Christ. If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ you are acquitted based upon what Christ did for you on the cross. You are no longer under the sentence of death. “The wages of sin is death.” But
Christ died as your substitute. Legally you are alive because of the death and resurrection of your substitute. We have a death sentence passed on to us because of Adam’s sin, and our own personal experience of sin. Our sins are pardoned because Christ suffered the punishment for them. We know that we can never be punished again for them because Christ suffered the punishment for our sins. Christ died for us, in our stead, and in that death we are now delivered. “There is therefore now no condemnation for us who are in Christ Jesus.” We have been legally acquitted and given life. Our acquittal is a present reality. We have full pardon and cannot be touched by the law. We are legally alive in Christ Jesus, and we legally cannot lose it. “No condemnation” means justification. We have a full legal pardon! That legal pardon
as we move forward into the new year. “Another year is dawning! Dear Father, let it be, in working or in waiting, another year with thee; another year of leaning upon thy loving breast, another year of trusting, of quiet, happy rest. Another year of mercies, of faithfulness and grace; another year of gladness in the shining of thy face; another year of progress, another year of praise, another year of proving thy presence all the days. Another year of service, of witness for thy love; another year of training for holier work above. Another year is dawning! Bro. Josh Stevenson
that God has given us will be just as good now as it will be a million years from now. Even then it will still read, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus.” Jesus Christ gives us spiritual life. We were dead in our trespasses and sins. We were spiritually dead. God in His loving grace and mercy has given us spiritual life. It is like being raised from the dead. The spiritually dead live because of the saving death of Christ. The Holy Spirit opens our deaf spiritual ears and we hear and respond to the effectual call of God to salvation. He opens our dead spiritual eyes that we might see the things of God and believe on His Son for spiritual life. The Holy Spirit softens our stony dead hearts so we will believe on Christ and be saved. He gives us a new heart. Yes, we were dead, and God chose to give us life in Christ.
The Bringer Of Death
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
Humanity is warned about the “Bringer of Death.” James wrote concerning this very topic. He wrote that “every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:14-15). It is important that we recognize what sin is. John wrote that “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4), and that “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8). James defines sin as “him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin” (James 4:17). Again, James states that “if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin”
(James 2:9). Jesus said that the comforter would “reprove the world of sin” (John 16:8), “of sin, because they believe not on me” (John 16:9). Paul wrote that “whatsoever is not of faith is sin” (Romans 14:23) and “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). We are also reminded that when we “sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ” (1 Corinthians 8:12). We must realize what sin does. When we desire anything that we should not have according to God’s word, we follow the devil’s will for us. Jesus told some that “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:44). “Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:15). Paul warns that “the wages of sin is death; but

the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Consider the message from the book of Hebrews, “let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). We must choose. Paul asks, “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” (Romans 6:16). Even in anger, we must choose against sin; “Be ye angry, and sin not” (Ephesians 4:26). We must understand that the enjoyment of sin does not last, Moses chose “rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season” (Hebrews 11:25). John helps us understand the choice, “the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever” (1 John 2:17).

Alonzo “Daddy” John Wemple was born on October 1, 1833, to Phoebe
Chadsey and John Bunyon Wemple in Schenectady, NY. When he was 17 years old in 1851, Alonzo joined a career in the railroad industry in New York. He watched the industry change, from burning wood to coal and from trains having names to numbers. Alonzo first worked on a train named “Buffalo.” He became an engineer in 1854, working in the Midwest around Indianapolis, Ohio, and Illinois. At one point during the Civil War (1861-1865), Alonzo worked on a train
carrying Confederate prisoners of war. He transferred to New York in 1863. In 1865, he piloted the train carrying former President Abraham Lincoln’s body from Schenectady to Troy, NY. A pilot train was ahead of Lincoln’s funeral train, both going 20 miles per hour. The funeral train tolled a bell at each station and at larger city stations, the train stopped to let people see the body as it lay in state. Alonzo eventually moved to Texas in 1886 and worked on the Texas & Pacific Railway train between
Texarkana, AR, and Whitesboro, TX. He then operated a switch engine in Bonham, TX, from 1888 until a rheumatism in his legs forced him to stop work in 1922, but an interview he gave to the New Castle News in 1922 indicated that Alonzo wanted to return to work. He married a woman named Charlotte, who died in 1892. He then married Pearlie Lou Williams in 1900, and they had one son. Alonzo died in Fort Worth, TX, on January 21, 1929. He is buried in section C107 of Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham.

Pop culture in the 2000s (the “aughts”) was defined by the rise of Y2K fashion, iconic pop stars like Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera, celebrity reality shows (Paris Hilton, The Simple Life), teen films (Mean Girls), the boom of hiphop and pop-punk/emo music, the dawn of social media, and major tech shifts like the rise of MP3s and early smartphones. It was a decade of bold fashion (low-rise jeans, tracksuits), blockbuster movies, and the beginnings of 24/7 celebrity culture. Music: Dominated by pop (Britney, *NSYNC), hip-hop (Southern hip-hop), and rock (The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Paramore), with talent shows like American Idol launching stars. Gasoline: Prices rose from about $1.30 to $3.29 per gallon. Bread: A loaf went from roughly $0.91 to $1.84. Eggs: A carton increased from about $0.98 to $3.59 Technology: iPods, flip phones, early social media (MySpace), and video games like Animal Crossing and the Nintendo DS. Television & Film: Reality TV exploded (The Simple Life, The Osbournes), teen movies thrived (Mean Girls), and iconic series like Gossip Girl began. U.S. Election: The Bush v. Gore Supreme Court case halted a Florida recount, effectively handing the presidency to George W. Bush. Russia: Vladimir Putin was elected President, and the Second Chechen War intensified. Israel/Palestine: The Second Intifada erupted, leading to
violent clashes. Terrorism: The USS Cole was bombed by al-Qaeda in Yemen. Human Genome Project: A draft sequence of the entire human genome was announced. Internet: The dot-com bubble peaked and began to burst. Digital Music: MP3s revolutionized music distribution, sparking industry controversy. The International Space Station (ISS) became fully operational with its first crew. Submarine: The Russian nuclear submarine Kursk sank, killing all 118 crew. Aviation: Air France Flight 4590 (Concorde) crashed after takeoff from Paris. Tunnel Fire: A fire in the Kaprun tunnel in Austria killed 155 people. Millennium Celebrations: Billions worldwide celebrated the arrival of January 1, 2000, with massive festivities, though the 21st century technically began in 2001.
.OO.
L
The Y2K Bug: Despite widespread fears that computer systems would crash at the turn of the century, extensive preparation by technicians ensured that relatively few problems occurred. Sydney Summer Olympics: Australia hosted the 27th Olympic Games, featuring memorable performances from athletes like Cathy Freeman and Ian Thorpe. Tiger Woods’ Grand Slam: Tiger Woods became the youngest player to achieve a career Grand Slam by winning all four major golf championships at the age of 24. Music Milestones: Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP became the fastest-selling rap album, and Destiny’s Child topped charts with “Independent Women”. Movies like Gladiator, X-Men, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon dominated the box office.

OBITUARIES
Patricia Carlene Bursell Baugh Patricia Carlene Bursell Baugh went to meet Jesus Sunday morning, December 28, 2025. She was at her home in Telephone, Tx, surrounded by her children. Pat was born in Clinton, OK on April 6, 1941 to Samuel Lee Clay and Ida Jewel Bursell. She spent her early years in various locations in Texas, including Tom Bean. She and her family moved to Gardena, Ca when she was a young girl, where she attended elementary school. The family moved back to Texas, north of Bonham, when she was in high school and she graduated from Bonham High School. While she was in high school, she worked at the K&W Root Beer Stand along with her younger sister, Cordelia. Pat met and married Quinley Carpenter in 1958 and they had two children, Mark and Lisa. After they were divorced, she met and married Thomas “Red” Baugh. The young family moved to Telephone, TX in 1966 and in 1967 they had another daughter, Rhonda. While her kids were growing up, Pat was first and foremost a wife and mother. After the kids were all in school, she worked a few jobs, including driving a school bus for Sam Rayburn ISD and then working for Blue Cross Blue Shield in Bonham. During this time, her husband Red kept her busy with one hobby after another and in the early 80’s, one of these hobbies became a full-time job. Pat quit her job at Blue Cross to become his partner in the business Hell on the Red, Inc., making and selling salsa. It was also about this time that they became grandparents for the first time, a job that they both relished. Pat loved anything that had to do with the grandkids and she left the videos to prove it. Family vacations were always a blast. She made several trips, including New York City, Yellowstone, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and Disney World. In the last few years, she enjoyed traveling to Branson, Broken Bow, Shreveport and lots of beach trips. Mom was a fighter and she did her best to stay here with us, but some battles are too much for even the bravest. She leaves behind to carry on her memory children Mark Baugh and Kathy, Lisa Hamilton and Brent and Rhonda Lewis and Jeff. Also left to remember her are her grandchildren Justin Baugh and Stacy, Hannah Baugh, Brentney Hamilton Watson and McClain, Ashton Cabler and Charlie, Tyler Hamilton and Colton Bell, Clay Lewis and Jeran Lewis, along with great-grandkids Delilah Baugh, Coy Cabler, Callan Cabler and Waylon Watson. She also leaves behind sisterin-law Nelda Bursell, brother-in-law John Paul Baugh and Cate, numerous nieces and nephews as well as good friends Sue Fox and Janice Castle. Pat was preceded in death by her husband Thomas “Red” Baugh, her parents Clay and Jewel Bursell, brother Larry Bursell and sister Cordelia “Kit” Baugh, brothers-in-law James Ball, Duncan Baugh, Pete Baugh, Jim Baugh and sisters-in-law Barbara Ball, Bessie Dizmond and Linda Tschoepe. Pat was a member of Elwood Baptist Church. She loved Jesus and we know that she is with her beloved Red as well as other family members in heaven. Services were held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Elwood Baptist Church, with family night Friday, January 2, 2026 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Cooper Sorrells Funeral Home. Brother Dennis Noblett and Brother Ronnie Ball officiated. Burial was at Forest Grove Cemetery in Telephone. Pall bearers were grandsons Justin Baugh, Tyler Hamilton, McClain Watson, Charlie Cabler, Clay Lewis, Jeran Lewis. Memorial donations can be made to Elwood Baptist Church youth building fund, Telephone VFD, or a charity of your choice. A woman of noble character who can find? She is worth more than rubies. God’s Garden God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

Grace Margaret Chapman Grace Margaret Chapman, 89, of Ivanhoe, Texas, passed away on December 28th, 2025, surrounded by her family. Grace was born June 9th, 1936, in Port O’Connor, Texas, the daughter of Joe Chano and Amelia ‘Gonzales’ Chano. Her childhood years were spent on the Texas coast prior to moving to San Antonio as a teenager. She met the love of her life, Kenneth Dale Chapman, during his first year of service stationed at Lackland Air Force Base on a blind date. They married on September 2nd, 1956, at the Chano family home in San Antonio, TX., and were married for 68 years. Grace spent the bulk of her years as a faithful military wife – helping in every move to make each house a home, whether it was near an airbase in Alaska, Wisconsin, Texas, and Lake Charles, Louisiana where they settled while their children; Kenny, Randy and Beverly attended school. Later in life, Ken & Grace moved to Ivanhoe, Texas, where their family home has held countless memories for nearly 30 years. Grace adored her husband Ken, along with her children, sisters, grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren. Her legacy is marked by a deep love for her family and friends, spending time on numerous dance floors with Ken, and cooking for the people she loved. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea,thoughIwalkthroughthe valleyoftheshadowofdeath, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Nicholas James Underwood Nicholas James Underwood, of Whitewright, Texas, passed away on December 17, 2025, at the age of 47. Nick was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on November 16, 1978, to Gretchen and Jon Underwood. His childhood was filled with great memories and love, spent with his younger brother, Michael Underwood, and his cousins. He had a passion for baseball and was a pitcher on the field. He spent the beginning of his adulthood driving trains and searching for his one true love, Jamie Underwood, whom he married in 2006 after falling in love with her on their first date. His life was devoted to his love for her and their three children, Quinn Teddlie, Caden Underwood, and Linus Underwood. To Nick, family always came first. In 2022, he became a Pop-Pop to his first grandchild, Mila Theobald, and quickly became the center of her life. Then, in 2024, he welcomed his second grandchild, Adelyn Theobald, and became a light in her life as well. He had a special energy and goodness that radiated from him as he walked into a room—something anybody and everybody could feel. Nick had a lifelong passion for caring for animals. He combined this passion with Jamie by opening a dog rescue called Canine Karma Rescue. Through this rescue, they fostered less fortunate dogs in hopes of finding them perfect homes. Nick Underwood will live on in the hearts of everyone he impacted—a beacon of kindness and love, and a soul that shined with a light that provided warmth to all. Bois d’Arc FAIR. Normal stain; 58 degrees; 2.42 below pool. Before the cold front water temperature reached 55-62 degrees. Mornings bass bite continues to be slow on chatterbaits and spinnerbaits in 2-5 feet. Texas rigs with crawfish type plastics are good on big wood in 2-6 feet. The best bite has been with brightly colored squarebill crankbaits on the outside edge of grass, or along the break line 3-5 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Mitchell’s Guide Service. Crappie are slow in the creek channels in 30-50 feet of water on timber. Cover a lot of water. Report by River Bottom Boys Guide Service. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 52 degrees; 1.70 feet below pool. Lake Tawakoni has settled into a healthy winter pattern and all species of fish are feeding! Water temperatures are sitting right at 52 degrees on the main lake. There is a big warm-up in the forecast, so water temperature could rise as high as 55 degrees on the main lake. The trophy catfish bite is good for fish up to 55 pounds. Targeting fish in 20-35 feet has been the ticket on fresh cut gizzard shad. The crappie bite is steady. Fish have staged up in deeper more open water and finding the bigger schools of fish is important. Jigs are working best in 18-35 feet near bridge pilings and deep vertical timber. The largemouth bite is surprisingly good right now. Docks in 4-7 feet have been very good with Texas or Carolina rigged soft plastics, or slow rolled square bills crankbaits. Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 53 degrees; 0.16 feet above pool. Striped bass are biting swimbaits on structure in 10-20 feet of water. Large groups of birds are working over more active fish. Drifting along with the birds while casting and retrieving through them. The live bait and deadsticking bite has slowed due to the warm weather pattern the last couple of weeks. Fish are stuck in a holding pattern, but are still producing some fish from 35-60 feet of water. Drifting medium to large cut bait is producing eater size and larger catfish in 40-60 feet of water. The fish are a little more scattered so patience is key, so find an area where you are marking fish, set up a good drift, and stick with it. Crappie are holding steady on structure in 15-20 feet of water as the water is holding consistently in the 55 degree range. Jig size and color will vary day to day so have some options in the tackle box. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Texoma, Guaranteed Guide Service.

the suspect since last deer season, when they found an unusual hunting blind made out of a converted port-a-potty. Unable to catch the suspect last year, wardens set up a game camera along the property line in hopes the hunter would return to hunt the same unusual blind. On the opening morning of deer season, the camera captured the suspect walking to his "toilet stand." Not long after, wardens confronted the hunter and he confessed to hunting without permission. Charges were filed, and the man removed the blind and feeder from the property.

Toyota ShareLunker Program Launches 40th Anniversary Season on New Year’s Day
THENS – New Year’s Day 2026 will launch the 40th season of the Toyota ShareLunker Program, another major milestone for Texas’ highly acclaimed and storied largemouth bass selective breeding and stocking program. Since 1986, anglers from throughout the state and nation have gone fishing on Texas lakes and cast their lines in hopes of landing a Legacy Class largemouth bass weighing 13 pounds or more. During the first three months of each Toyota ShareLunker season (Jan. 1 through March 31), anglers who reel in a Legacy Class largemouth bass have the option of loaning it to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) for captive spawning at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens. Its offspring will then be reared and stocked back into public lakes throughout the state, continuing to build and sustain the legacy of bigger, better bass for current and future generations of Texas anglers. The Toyota ShareLunker Program plays an integral role in building and maintaining quality bass fisheries for the millions of freshwater anglers who go fishing on the state’s lakes and rivers each year. Grabbing a pole, hitting the water, and hauling in a 13-pound largemouth bass would be a great way to kick off the new year. The cast of the line, the lure landing just right on the water, and a strike from a possible fish of a lifetime is what many anglers strive to experience. “For 40 years, the Toyota ShareLunker Program has partnered with anglers to grow bigger, better bass and elevate Texas into a world-class fishing destination” said Natalie Goldstrohm, Toyota ShareLunker Program Coordinator. “Every Legacy Class fish shared with TPWD helps advance selective breeding and stocking efforts that benefit bass fisheries statewide. This milestone season is a celebration of the participating anglers, TPWD Inland Fisheries Division employees, our partners and sponsors, and the collaborative fisheries conservation efforts that make these incredible catches possible.” The Toyota ShareLunker Program had a banner season in 2025. Key highlights included: Nine public lakes delivered Legacy Class Lunkers, consisting of O.H. Ivie, RichlandChambers, Lady Bird, J.B. Thomas, Alan Henry, Tawakoni, Sam Rayburn, Tyler and Toledo Bend. The catch of a Legacy Class Lunker at Lake Tawakoni increased the number of public lakes that have produced Legacy Class ShareLunker entries to a total of 79. Lake O.H. Ivie in West Texas was at the head of the class again this season with six Legacy Class entries. Angler Willie Pipkin set a new lake record on Feb. 5 with his 14.05-pound bass caught at Lady Bird Lake. Four anglers caught their second Legacy Class Lunker, consisting of Brady Stanford, Ross Gomez, Terry Scott, and Mechelda Criswell. Angler Ross Gomez caught the same Legacy Class Lunker twice two years apart, a first for the program. Lakes Tyler and Sam Rayburn combined for a double-lunker day on March 22. Anglers who catch a qualifying fish can call the ShareLunker hotline at (903) 681-0550 to report their catch 24/7 through March 31, 2026. Anglers that catch and loan a 13-plus pound lunker earn Legacy Class status, receive a catch kit filled with merchandise donated by program sponsors, a 13lb+ Legacy decal for their vehicle or boat, VIP access to the Toyota ShareLunker Annual Awards event, a highquality replica mount of their fish from Lake Fork Taxidermy, ShareLunker branded apparel provided by AFTCO, and Bass University will provide a swag pack and annual subscription. Anglers also receive entries into two separate drawings – a Legacy Class Drawing and the year-end Grand Prize Drawing. Both drawings will award the winner a $5,000 Bass Pro Shops shopping spree.

January — Who’s Awake in Winter?
Winter looks quiet, but life is humming. Chickadees stash seeds, hawks ride cold thermals, and raccoons venture out on “mild” nights. Animals survive by smart strategies—fluffing feathers, sharing cavities, slowing metabolism, and seeking dense evergreen cover to block wind. You can help: keep a shallow dish of unfrozen water available (rinse often), offer black-oil sunflower seed, and leave a small brush pile near shrubs for shelter. Notice who visits at dawn—winter wildlife works on a tight energy budget, and morning calories matter. Try this: Pick one square yard in your yard or a park and watch for five minutes.
