A Message from Arledge Ridge Cemetery Association

For the last several years it has been the dream of the Arledge Ridge Cemetery Association to build a pavilion at the cemetery for grave side services and Homecoming Memorial. We have plans to build a 30’X40’ structure that will be built on the west side of Hwy. 78 in the new part of the cemetery on the south end. We just recently sold the one acre plot and old church building. Even after the sale of the plot, we need additional funds to complete the project.

We are establishing a building fund and asking for donations.

Hopefully, the project can be completed by summer.

Maintenance costs of the cemetery continue to increase and the sale of plots continue to decrease. This is mainly because more and more people are cremating. Therefore, the cemetery association depletes

its annual budget that comes from donations each year.

Annual donations no longer cover the cost to maintain and beautify the cemetery in the way our loved ones deserve.

Our future goal, if fund raising is sufficient, is to also build a memorial for veterans.

Youth 12/22/20 Art Contest

Press Release - The Fannin County Children’s Center is seeking children’s artwork for their annual contest. Children and youth ages 18 and under are invited to enter their work of art for a chance to win prizes and help other children.

The contest judges will be looking for artwork that illustrates the theme “Open Your Heart.” They will be looking for something that is eye catching and heart-warming. Winning entries in the past have often included hearts, kids, families and bright, cheerful

colors, as well as the words “Open Your Heart” and “Fannin County Children’s Center.”

Two winning entries will win special ribbons and cash prizes.

The first place artist will receive a $100 cash, a blue ribbon and their artwork will be reproduced on the front of the campaign card. Second place will win a $50 cash, a red ribbon and have their artwork included inside of the card. The cards that feature the winning artwork will be used to help the local nonprofit raise funds to provide advocacy, counseling and other

SitREP As a commander, you will be privileged to share in many successes of your organization; however, you will personally own every failure . . . [so] ask important questions ..think critically . . . and you will be better prepared to lead.

Officers spend years preparing themselves for command and endeavor to demonstrate their ability to lead men and women in uniform for the honor of this unique challenge. Selection for command is both a testament to an officer’s potential abilities and a tremendous test of those skills.

The change of command process during which a prospective commander takes the reins of authority achieves two goals. First, it makes the new commander legally accountable for the equipment, material and personnel in their organization.

Second, and no less important, the change process provides new leaders an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the history and organization of their new commands, and the key personnel that fill its ranks.

For this last reason, it’s a good idea to begin the Fannin County SITREP with a careful inspection and overview of our unit -- Fannin County itself.

In this way, we will all know our county better and have a common set of shared facts -much like a new commander develops – when we discuss issues affecting our county.

Where did Fannin County come from? What does Fannin County look like today?

How does that evolution and characteristics impact policy decisions at the local, state and federal level?

Today, we’ll begin our overview of our county by looking briefly at this history, population, economic activity and household income.

First, a little unit history.

Fannin County was founded in 1837 by act of the fledgling Congress of the newly independent Republic of Texas. While Fannin County was not one of the initial 23 counties minted by the Texas Congress, it was among the next 6 counties chartered by the Republic less than 2 years after Texans won independence from Mexico.

At its inception, Fannin County was carved out of Red River County and vastly larger than its current 890 square miles. In fact, when first organized, Fannin County was so immense that it contained parts of what would eventually become all or portions of twelve other current Texas counties.

Fannin County assumed it’s current shape and size as it ceded land to establish newer neighboring counties in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Fannin County and its county seat Bonham were named to honor of two fallen heroes of the Texas Revolution: James Walker Fannin, Jr. – commander of Texas Army forces at Battle of Coleto Creek – and James Bonham – a defender of the Alamo.

From its creation, Fannin County, like much of the

young Republic of Texas, was sparsely populated and its economy reliant on agriculture including cattle, hogs and horses along with some staple crops. Over the last 184 years, the population of the county has risen to nearly 36,000 residents (equal to or more than the population of the entire Texas Republic in 1835) but Fannin County remains less populous than neighboring Collin, Grayson, Hunt and Lamar counties.

Fannin’s 21st Century economy is more diverse than in it was in its early years and now includes contributions from construction, healthcare, manufacturing and retail, but with some 2,200 farms and ranches in the county remains heavily dependent on agricultural production and related businesses.

In 2017, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported the total value of products from Fannin County farm and ranch producers at just over $86 million. However, the total cost to produce those crops and livestock stood over $95.5 million. Government payments of $7.4 million helped bridge the gap between the value of goods sold and production costs. The USDA concluded that average perfarm income was only $8,968.

Perhaps owing at least in part to an economy that features scores of small farms and ranches producing their goods in a rural county on tight margins, the US Census Bureau reports that Fannin County’s median household income in 2019 stood at $54,648 – more than $7,000 below the median for all households in Texas ($61,874) and over $14,000 less than that of all US households ($68,703).

Like many Texans, the Census Bureau reported that in 2019 some 13% of Fannin County residents lived at or below federal poverty level.

In our next Fannin County SITREP, we’ll continue to explore our new command by looking at the demographics of the county’s population including age, education and racial composition to help us better anticipate and understand the potential challenges and issues that lay ahead.

6/2/20 Commissioners Court Zoom Meeting: Covid-19 Updates 11/24/20 Department Transfers/End of Year Reports, Discussed

Tuesday, January 19, 2021, County Judge Randy Moore called the Regular Meeting of Commissioners Court to order at 9:00 a.m. There was a momentary delay with the start of the meeting due to a transmission difficulty with Zoom.

Judge Moore noted that Quorum was established and introduced Pastor Lyn Holley from Calvary Baptist Church in Bonham to lead the Invocation. Afterward, County Judge Randy Moore led the Pledges.

4. Discussion, consideration and action regarding the Fannin County Declaration of Disaster Proclamation for Covid-19: County Judge Randy Moore said that as of 3:25 p.m.

Monday the 18th, there were 2,063 confirmed cases and 376 probable cases for a total of 2,439 cases of Covid-19 in Fannin County. Of that total number, there are 164 active cases, (42 of those in prison), 2,237 recovered and 66 fatalities. The current hospitalization rate is 24.24%. County Judge Moore urged caution as 40% of all patients in this region’s hospitals, are Covid-19 patients. Motion was made, seconded and passed to extend Proclamation one week.

5. Discussion, consideration and action regarding the Covid-19 Response and Continuity of Operations Plan for Fannin County: County Judge Randy Moore asked if anyone saw any need to change the plan.

There were no requests for changes and motion was made, seconded and passed to extend Operations Plan for one week.

6. Discussion and update regarding Courthouse Restoration: County Judge Randy Moore read from an update letter he had received from Turner Construction. Regarding the Exterior: Encore has changed the transformer and electrical feeds that ran for a new main switch and mechanical yard, mason work continues with patching stone at windows, installing a metal deck on the roof, new gable trusses at entries. Interior: mechanical and electrical rough-in is taking place, blocking for doorways and millwork is taking place.

7. Discussion, consideration and action to approve Treasurer’s Financial Report for December 2020: Fannin County Treasurer David Woodson, gave an update on the report and asked if there were any questions. No questions were asked. Commissioner Magness motioned to approve, Commissioner Lane seconded, and motion was passed to approve.

8. Discussion, consideration and action to approve Treasurer’s Investment Report for December 2020: David Woodson gave an update on the Investment Report and asked if there were any questions. No questions were asked, motion was made by Commissioner Self to approve the report and seconded by Commissioner Lackey. Motion passed.

9. Discussion and report of monies collected by the Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 office

for December 2020: Chief Clerk for Precinct 1, Kim Richards reported monies collected for Precinct 1 with an explanation that the amount is generally low until after income tax time. County Judge Moore thanked her for her work. No action needed.

10. Discussion and report of monies collected by the Fannin County District Clerk’s office for December 2020: County Clerk Nancy Young reported monies collected by her office.

11. Discussion consideration and action to create a Courthouse Dedication Committee: After some discussion it was decided to table this to next week. Motion was made, sec-

Discussion, consideration and action to transfer the Bond Supervision position from Fannin County to Fannin County Adult Probation per request from Adult Probation Director: Adult Probation Director Corey Baker opened the discussion with a summary of what was discussed about this move at the previous Commissioner Courts meeting. Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple, then gave a report of her consultations with TAC and other county officials, and their handling of similar matters.

An in-depth conversation ensued involving all the requirements needed for this transfer to be feasible and the statutes involved. County Judge Ran-

dy Moore stated that in order to work out the mechanics of how this will work in writing, it might be best to table this item to next week to refine the wording and possibly include a memorandum of understanding between both parties. Motion was made by Commissioner Magness, seconded by Commissioner Self and motion passed to table to next week.

I make Snickerdoodle cookies all the time, and if this cake is anything like the cookies, it will be delicious. My sister gave this recipe to me, and I hope you try it

CARAMEL SNICKERDOODLE CAKE 1 ¾ cups plus 2 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 ½ cups flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 can (5 oz.) evaporated milk 1 cup sour cream ½ cup butter or margarine, melted 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 eggs, beaten 10 caramels, unwrapped Heat oven to 350°. Grease a 12 cup fluted tube cake pan with shortening. In small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of the sugar and 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon. Sprinkle mixture over inside of pan, turning to evenly coat. Shake out any excess.

In large bowl, mix remaining 1 ¾ cups sugar, remaining 1 teaspoon cinnamon, flour, baking soda, and salt. Reserve 1 tablespoon of the evaporated milk for

The year was 1917. Joshua Ari Christopher had just graduated from a prestigious Military Academy at the age of 21. His future was bright with hope. His dreams and plans included his high school sweetheart, the love of his life. He knew he would never love another; his heart belonged to Hope. Hope had furthered her own education as he attended the academy. Although apart much of the time, their love for one another and their relationship grew through daily letters and the short times they could be together at holidays and school breaks.

Their communication was fertile soil for their budding love.

They shared with one another their hopes and dreams for the future, a time when they could be together every day, building a life together and yes, the children; the fruit of their love they yearned for. The young couple made plans for their wedding; it could not come soon enough, but it would have to wait until Josh served his mandatory active service. Trouble was brewing throughout the world, and although the United States had not yet entered the war, the enemy continued to inflame the country through unprovoked attacks on civilian ships carrying passengers from ally countries and US citizens. Joshua knew his time was short before he would have to go, and it became apparent that his active service would be on foreign soil.

If he could serve his country and keep the homeland and its citizens safe from suffering through the ravages of war, he would fulfill his oath, his purpose, and his birthright.

“I will write you every day, and I will send you all I have to plan the wedding of your dreams.” Josh said with a broken heart. “I will be back, wait for me.!” Of course, Hope would wait for him. They pledged their love once again through a tearful good-bye. Josh was off to the European theater, the Great War, as it is called today.

Joshua did as he promised. He wrote every day, even in the most precarious circumstances. Hope also wrote, and although mail was often delayed, they both continued to declare their love for one another. The letters were frequent, and Josh sent checks to make her wedding dreams come true. When the mail was delayed, it was their love for one another that spurred them on. Hope was his reason for living, and he would live and return to her.

Hope bought her gown, planned the wedding celebration, and waited – and waited. But times were changing, and the fashions of the day bolstered a new lifestyle. Many of Her friends were marrying and starting their own families.

Some of her friends had received notification that their loved one had become a victim of the war. Others had received letters from their betrothed after learning of their death. Hope began to wane; Josh might never return.

The letters once cherished and tied with ribbons were carelessly thrown in a dusty box and her wedding gown preserved in a chest under her bed. Hope must get on with her life. Hope never read Josh’s last letter – “I am on my way home. Please meet me at the harbor.” Hope was not there. A Hallmark movie, perhaps? Characters are fictional, but the Truth is real.

THE following is not fiction. All characters portrayed are real and alive today. The Bible is a love letter, written to all who claim the name of Jesus. After Jesus was crucified and defeated death for us all, He told His followers: “I must leave to prepare a place for you [and the children who will follow]; for in My Father’s house are many rooms. I must make it ready to receive you so that where I am, you will be also. If I am going to prepare you a home, I will surely come back to get you. If this were not the truth, I would not say it.” John 14:1-3 paraphrased. In the same chapter, Jesus pledges that they will not be left alone, as He would never leave them. He told us, “I will give you another Helper to comfort you in my absence” John 14:16.

“He will remind you of everything I told you and teach you the meaning.” John 16:13. The Holy Spirit is the Breath (life force) of God in Jesus Christ and our constant companion. Through the Holy Spirit, the Word of God entered the hearts of men and women, leaders, kings and common people throughout the centuries. Prophets, preachers, mothers, fathers, young and old have heard these words and gave up their own lives to assure this love letter from God could be read by all and passed on to future generations. Many suffered death for their work and beliefs, but they saw the joy of their sacrifice before them in the face of Jesus Christ.

Almost every home in America has access to a Bible.

That access has been given to us by the lifeblood of our Savior and countless followers who knew that He spoke Truth, and that Truth is the key and the purpose of Life.

Yet, in a 2020 survey, only 25% of those who claim Jesus admit to reading the Bible at least one time per week.

The Love letters are dusty and thrown aside and we are living with the results. Although 80% of Americans say they believe in God, 58% of that number say they do not believe in the God of the Bible as the standard for absolute truth and morality. They believe the individual determines what is truth and morality. “There is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way of death.” Proverbs 14:12.

Lord, I pray you will give us a new love for your Word.

Give us a new desire to know and love your Word so that we might teach the children. Help us to know and live by your parting words, so we, and those we love, will not miss the boat of your homecoming. We are waiting for you!

Creative Arts Center Welcomes New Artist

Press Release - Erin Williamson is one of our new artists in Bonham, although she has lived most of her life here in Texas. As a child, she demonstrated a natural inclination toward the fine arts, specifically sketching and painting.

Her grandmother was an oil painter, so she may have some genetic influence there! Erin took a number of art classes in college and has studied with a few

Texas artists.

She has sold numerous paintings over the last ten years in McKinney, Winnsboro, and Mt Pleasant.

At the present time, she has a preference for charcoal sketching and for acrylics.

She is drawn to portraits, as she finds great satisfaction in expressing a range of emotions and personalities through studying the human face.

Erin says that, for her, painting is a personal expression of her own emotions and life experiences.

Since joining the arts center this year, Erin has become one of our treasured artist members.

She has entered works in each exhibit held here and she and her mother attend every event that they are able to attend. She was featured as artist of the month in October of this year.

Tx VLB Initiates Operation “Share The Love” VLB is challenging Texas communities to send Valentine’s Day cheer to Veterans

AUSTIN - Today, the Texas Veterans Land Board announced a statewide campaign to bring Valentine’s Day love to the nearly 1,000 Veterans residing in state-ran nursing homes. The mission is to bring awareness from Texans that although the Veterans have had to isolate for nearly a year due to COVID-19, they are not forgotten by their nearby communities.

ted to keeping our Veterans’ safety at the forefront of our minds during this pandemic, but doing so certainly does not mean we can’t share our love for them this Valentine’s Day,” said Texas Veteran Land Board Chairman George P. “Rural Texans have known for years this is an issue, but with COVID-19, all Texans have realized how important it is to have access to dependable broadband,” Charlie Leal, Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) state legislative director, said.

“There appears to be widespread support across the Texas Legislature this session to improve rural connectivity.”

A recent report from Gov. Greg Abbott’s Broadband Development Council stresses the need for a statewide broadband funding program, noting Texas is one of only six U.S. states that does not have a statewide broadband plan in place.

“This is something we have to really pursue this next session to make sure we have that access,” Morrison said.

Sen. Charles Perry, whose Texas Senate District 28 encompasses 51 mostly rural counties, filed SB 154 in November to create a broadband office within the Public Utility Commission of Texas, along with the establishment of a broadband service investment grant program.

In addition to Perry’s Senate bill, Rep. Ken King filed a bill in the House last November supporting another initiative to

increase broadband access.

Under King’s proposed HB 425, the state would establish a universal service fund to help provide broadband service in underserved rural areas. The funding would be paid for by telecommunications providers and broadband service providers.

King’s House District 88 covers an almost entirely rural stretch of the Texas Panhandle, running southwest from Lipscomb County to Gaines County.

Rep. Trent Ashby and Sen. Robert Nichols are also expected to introduce legislation this session to address rural broadband challenges, Leal said.

“The challenge this session will be the funding aspect.

During this budget cycle, there is a budgetary shortfall,” he said. “Although many legislators support increasing access in rural areas, there may not be enough revenue in the budget to fully fund these initiatives at this time.”

TFB supports efforts to increase broadband and cellular access in rural communities during the Texas Legislature.

TFB will work closely with lawmakers on this issue as the legislative session progresses.

By Jennifer Dorsett Field Editor The COVID-19 pandemic brought many issues to the forefront. For rural Texans, one of the biggest impacts of the pandemic has been the awareness brought to rural broadband access—or the lack thereof.

“This has been a very trying time with the pandemic and with the new issues we’re working with,” State Rep. Geanie Morrison said. “Broadband is huge in the rural areas, because we just don’t have enough access.”

Rural education suffered in 2020 because of a lack of broadband access, said Morrison, who represents Victoria County, along with six surrounding rural counties.

“As we’ve been going through this pandemic, our schools are really struggling, because we have areas that just don’t have access,” she said during a Texas Tribune event.

“When we had to go to doing things online, we had students that were left out. It’s been very difficult for them.”

Because of the struggles to work and learn remotely, more individuals, including legislators, are now aware of the situation. And action to address the rural-urban broadband di-

Jo Ray was born on November 11th 1936 and passed January 9th 2021.

Jo Ray was 84 years old and lived in Bonham, Texas. She was born in Jackson County, Tennessee.

She was the daughter of George Budd Flatt and Etta May Hutchison.

She had two brothers and four sisters.

Jo is survived by her son Roger Flatt of Bonham, TX, Daughter Rose Mota & husband Eusebio of Honey Grove, TX Daughter Marsha Barber & husband Gary of Ector, TX, Daughter Sherry Ford & Husband James of Savoy, TX and Son Chad Ray of Bonham, TX Jo enjoyed gardening, bird watching and watching old western movies; She also loved spending time with her family and friends.

Jo enjoyed playing cards and dominoes on Saturday nights before her health became an issue… She loved and enjoyed her long talks with Jim Carol every night as well.

Jo Ray was loved by so many and will truly be missed by her family and friends.

Thomas Raymond Witmer Jr., age 40, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2021 at the Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman, Texas.

Tom (Tommy) “Little Tom” was born on January 15, 1980 to Thomas Raymond Witmer Sr. and JoAnn Lynn Moreland in Hagerstown, Maryland. He graduated from Boonsboro High School in Maryland and later after moving to Texas, he graduated from Grayson College in Denison, Texas with his Associates in Applied Science degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design.

Tom enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing, traveling, drafting, and reading Stephen King novels.

Tom had a quietness about him but also a goofy personality that everyone loved. He was a smart, methodical thinker with patience and knew how to simplify complex problems. He met his wife, the love of his life, Charlene and moved to Texas to be with her and they were married in 2004. His smile, beautiful blue eyes and dedication to his family

will forever be missed. He was truly one of a kind.

WILLIAM LOUIS “DUB” CARSON Graveside services for Mr. William Louis “Dub” Carson, age 83, of the Carson Community, were held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at the Gum Springs Cemetery in the Carson Community. Rev. Lyn Holly officiated. He passed away on Saturday morning, January 16, 2021 at the Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas.

He was born on February 21, 1937 in the Carson Community of Fannin County, the son of Thomas Welch Carson and Helen Marie Clark Carson. He was a graduate of North Fannin High School and attended Paris Junior College. He married Mary Ann Cirkles on September 17, 1965 in Lamasco. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping.

He worked at the M&L Phillips 66 Gas Station on Sam Rayburn Drive for many years and never met a stranger while helping those with their automotive needs. He was preceded in death by his parents and his half-brother, Ray D. Smith and daughter-in-law Amy Carson.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Carson of Duplex Son, Tommy Carson of Bonham and grandchildren, Cathy Huebner (Greg), Lucas Templer (Amy), Nicholas Templar (Rachel), Casey Holly (Josh), William Carson (Ashlund), and Jacob Carson.

SALLY ANN ROUGEOU ESKUE

Sally Ann Rougeou Eskue was born in Lecompte, Rapides Parish, Louisiana to Benjamin M. Rougeou and Ruby Lee Chelette Rougeou on September 17, 1951. She passed away on Monday, January 18, 2021 at Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman due to peripheral vascular disease.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at the First Presbyterian Church Bonham Prayer Garden with Craig Buford officiating. Sally’s ashes will be entombed at a later date in her home state of Louisiana.

As one of eight children, Sally developed her passion for cooking and serving food at an early age. After graduating from Rapides High School in 1969 in Lecompte, Louisiana she moved to Ravenna, Texas to live with her sister, Aurline where she met Tommy Eskue in December 1969. After a three week romance, they were married on January 16, 1970. Their only child was born in 1971. Sally started working for Bob Holiday’s The SteakOut in 1971 and worked there until its closure. She and Tommy then opened and ran The Salad Bowl Restaurant in downtown Bonham. Ahead of her time and never one to shy away from hard work, Sally tackled the many aspects of being a business woman while also supporting Tommy with his own career and raising a family. When they sold The Salad Bowl she assumed a position at VPG in Bonham and worked there several years until acquiring her insurance license. She ended her professional career as Vice President of Insurance

Sally was extremely active in Bonham and Fannin County up until her death. She devoted many hours to The Fannin County Fair, Chi Lamba, The Creative Arts Center, Bonham Chamber of Commerce, PTA and Boy Scouts.

Faith was very important to Sally and she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bonham and served in many leadership positions including being an ordained elder.

She practiced her faith by helping others, especially those in need, through church and community organizations. With a generous spirit and heart to serve, she and Tommy were known to be the ones to call if you needed a food fundraiser.

In retirement she was a dedicated Meals on Wheels delivery person and had started as a mentor at Finely Oates just before the pandemic started.

Sally was most proud of her son, his wife and especially her 15 year old granddaughter, Maggie. She and Tommy were dedicated to both of their extended families that included many celebrations and reunions. Sally loved sharing a passion for Texas Tech and Dallas Cowboy football with her son. She enjoyed entertaining, playing cards, traveling and being with her large circle of friends. She was always a hard worker and dedicated to her various commitments. Her infectious laugh and sassy spirit will be missed by all who loved and knew Sally.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Tommy of 51 years, son Bradley Wayne Eskue and his wife Shelli of Fort Worth, TX and her granddaughter, Maggie Michelle Eskue of Fort Worth, TX. Sisters and brothers, RoAnn Nichols and husband Garland of Forest Hill, LA; Caliste Rougeou and wife Sandy of Bunkie,LA; Dorothy Brown of Deville, LA; Jim Rougeou of Bonham, TX; Benjamin Rougeou and wife Diana of West Monroe, LA and Rhetta Johnstone and husband Stacy of Ventura, CA. He was born on August 3, 1942 in Bonham, Texas, the son of Thomas Pascal Brent and Frances Louise Self Brent. A graveside service was held on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 10:00 am at Shiloh Cemetery in Klondike, Texas with Bill Newport officiating.

Following high school, Ronnie attended East Texas State University, earning a BS degree in Accounting. He enlisted in the United States Army Security Agency, where he earned the rank of E5 Sergeant.

While in the Army, he served a tour in Viet Nam. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 81, where he served as Junior Vice Commander. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 1, in Commerce. On March 26, 1966, Ronnie married the love of his life, Deedra (Deedie) Dodson in Commerce Texas. He and his family were members of the Cross Trails Cowboy Church. Ronnie worked at Raytheon E Systems, retiring in 1997 after 30 years of service with Serve Air. Above all else, Ronnie dedicated his life to serving others and being the best Poppy he could be.

Ronnie is survived by his wife, Deedie; his son, Tracey Brent and his wife, Tammy of Campbell; his granddaughters, Jackie Brent of Overton, Texas, and Tracey DeAnn Brent of Campbell; two brothers, Pat Brent and his wife, Betty and Dava Brent and his wife, Theresa, all of Bonham along with 1/26/21 many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pascal, and Frances Brent.

Serving as pallbearers for Ronnie were John Weaver, Rodney Seglier, Mike Flater, Larry Wilcox, Brian Weber, and Buddy Gregg.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were the American Legion, Post 1, of Commerce and the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 81, of Greenville.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to honor Ronnie to the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 81 in Greenville or the American Legion Post 1 in Commerce.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial for Carole Ann Duke, age 76, of Dodd City, Texas was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 23, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Bonham, Texas under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Father Paolo Capra officiated. Burial followed at Dodd City Cemetery in Dodd City, Texas. Carole passed away Tuesday morning, January 19, 2021 lovingly surrounded by family, at her home in Dodd City, Texas.

Carole was born on December 17, 1944 in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of George Clymer and Lorine Benton Clymer.

She married Louis Timothy “Tim” Duke on September 11, 1961 at St. Pius Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas. They were married for 59 years before her passing. Carole was a novice genealogist. She enjoyed studying her family history and tracing her lineage. Anyone who knew Carole knew of her exceptional cooking skills. Some would say she made the best fried chicken and gravy in all the south. Family was everything to Carole; her life revolved around them and she would do anything for them. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, she cherished them dearly. Carole was a devout Catholic and had attended St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Bonham, Texas for over 15 years. She absolutely adored babies. Carole was a Pro-life advocate; she understood how precious life was and how important it was to give a voice to the unborn. Her faith was strong and unwavering and she dearly Loved the Lord.

She will, most ardently, be missed and memories of her will be cherished by all who knew her. Carole is preceded in death by her parents; sons, Michael Glen Duke and Christopher Lyne Duke; daughter, Tonya Marie Duke; brothers, Howard Clymer and Buddy Clymer; and sister, June Clymer.

Fond memories of Carole will forever be remembered and cherished by his surviving family members; husband, Tim Duke of Dodd City, Texas; sons, Steven Duke and wife Tammy of Lucas, Texas and Mark Duke and wife Shelee of Allen, Texas; brother, Jack Clymer and wife Georgia of Fairview, Texas; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Marie Hankins and husband Luke, Cassandra Nicole Duke, Carolyne Elizabeth Duke, Brooklyn Rae Edwards and husband Ray, and Brady Riece Duke; great grandson, Isaac Sebastian Hankins; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Rosie Muriel Pannell Grounds left this earth for her eternal home early Wednesday morning, January 19, 2021 at the age of 92 years and 2 months. She passed away at the Homestead of Hugo Care Home in Hugo, Oklahoma.

Rosie was born November 19, 1928 at Hickory Creek Community between Celeste and Wolfe City, Texas to Thomas Asbury and Mattie Blissett (Etheridge) Pannell. She married L.Z. “Zeke” Grounds April 12, 1946 in Trenton, Texas. They had two sons, Tommy Zeke and Danny Muriel.

Rosie graduated from Randolph High School in 1946. She worked as a bookkeeper for Levines Clothing Store in Arlington for 17 years, sold Avon for 35 years, retiring as Assistant Manager, worked for Bonham Hospital and Jordan Home Health before her health prevented her from working.

She took Jesus as her Savior at an early age and was a member of the Boyd Baptist Church of Bonham, Texas. After she was unable to attend church the Homebound Committee of the Boyd Church ministered to her regularly.

She is survived by her sons, Tommy of Austin, TX and Danny and wife Susy of Richland Hills, TX; grandsons, Cory and Jason, granddaughters, Amy Rose and Michelle; great grandchildren, Kasey Rose, Melody, Harmony, Kylie and Austin. Her oldest granddaughter and oldest greatgranddaughters were both named after her. She is also survived by brother, Elmo Etheridge Pannell and wife June; sister, Mamie Lucille Hypock and husband Billy, both of Arlington, TX and sister Doris Marie Jackson and husband Henry of Bennington, OK, who has been her caregiver; and special friend, Betty Boone Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, J.T. and George Pannell and grandson Tommy Glenn.

Graveside services for Rosie will be held at 12:00 pm on Friday January 29, 2021, where she will be buried beside her husband Zeke at Moore Memorial Gardens, 1219 N. Davis St. in Arlington, Texas. The Fannin County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office is ready to serve motorists who have until then to complete their transactions.

If you have not renewed your expired vehicle registration sticker, you should make plans to renew on or before April 14, 2021. It is not necessary to wait until the deadline to complete any overdue transactions.

The Grizzly Bear

By Theresa Johnson interview with James Whitworth (5/23/1918 -9/24/2015) Back when I was a young boy, I used to hunt jack rabbits in Kaufman County, but in my mind, I was really hunting for Grizzlies.

Finally, when I was older and able to hunt the real thing, I went to Prince George, British Columbia. For fourteen years, guides led me to search for a grizzly bear. I always went in the fall of the year because I could also kill elk, moose, black bears, caribou and of course, the grizzly.

Toward the end of hunting during the 14th year, I met a guide at a coffee shop. He told me I was hunting at the wrong time of year for a grizzly. He guaranteed me a grizzly next year if I would come in the spring. He quoted me his price for 10 days.

After much discussion, I told him I would come and would he please send me a contract that guaranteed a grizzly. He backed up a bit and said maybe he should not have used the word “guarantee”. If he were to guarantee a grizzly, he would have to go up on his price. Over the winter, we haggled over the price and finally agreed upon a little more than his original quote.

The Fifteenth year searching for the grizzly began the next spring. I drove from Texas to just 17 miles out of White Horse in the Yukon Territory. I got there 10 days before my hunt was to begin. I travelled the entire area to see what I was up against and see the countryside.

A couple months before I was to arrive, the guide sent his sons out in 3 separate areas to kill moose to be used as bait when the carcasses ripened.

Then my hunt began. On day one, we rode on horseback all day, but did not spot a grizzly.

As we headed back to camp, all I could see was my supper and a place to sleep. My body was really tired. The guide said maybe we should get in my pickup and drive around the mountain where one of the moose was really ripe. So, I pulled myself up and into the truck. When we got there, the guide pulled out a tripod and set it up on top of the pickup. Just as I was relaxing against the steering wheel, the guide hollered, don’t you want to see the grizzly? I figured he was just giving me his “sales spiel”. I had heard it all day on horseback. Again, he said, don’t you want your money’s worth, come see the grizzly. So, I got on the truck and looked through the lens on the tripod and there he was, filling the entire lens.

When the guide decided we were close enough, he whispered for me to take the shot. I said this is not close enough, I shot a bear once and he ran off, never to be found. I was not going to lose

this one. At that point, the guide would not lead any further, so I took the lead with him trailing behind.

Finally, I figured I was close enough. The grizzly was busy with the moose carcass. We were facing him. I raised the gun and looked through the lens. There was this tremendous hairy grizzly bear covering my entire lens. I aimed at his chest and fired. The bear looked up and began running toward us at breakneck speed. I loaded again (the guide later told me I took way too long to reload), and fired. This time I struck in the lung area, he kept coming, but at a slant. The third shot got him in the spine and he fell to the ground 12 steps from us.

The guide and I were freezing, our bodies were shaking

from the cold, but we had to gut the bear. It was around midnight, but still some daylight.

After cleaning out the bear, we covered his eyes so the eagles would not claw them out, and went back down the mountain to the boat and back to camp. The next day, we finished scraping the fat from the hide, rolled it up and took it back to camp. I threw it in the back of the truck and said I’m heading back to Texas. The guide said but you still have 9 days hunting, eating, horseback riding, etc., don’t you want a black bear. I said, no, I already have one; this is what I came after.

I dropped the bear off at a taxidermist in Prince George, British Columbia and headed for Texas. I got my Grizzly Bear and I was happy!

Ballin’ with Bossy: Rion Baccus’ hoops high-scoring last month helping 1A Lady Hornets remain undefeated

Some are ironic.

Some are accurate.

Some are embarrassing.

Some are longlasting.

Dodd City sophomore Rion Baccus knows all about nicknames.

Here’s one of hers: “Bossy.”

“When I was in third grade, a teacher started calling me that,” said Baccus of her continuing moniker.

“I have a bunch of nicknames.”

Remove the ‘y’ and it describes how the secondyear varsity starter has scored -- especially of late -- this season: Like a boss.

“We’ve known since junior high that she is a natural scorer,” said Dodd City head coach Alex Stephenson on Jan. 18.

“It took her a season to get accustomed to the speed of the varsity game, coming from junior high,” said Stephenson. “That’s a different animal in itself.”

Stephenson additionally credited her summer work and preparation.

Baccus, who continues to show prowess behind the 3-point arc, also credited a change in her positioning on the court -- after an observation on a screen.

“I go to the goal a lot more,” she said. “My sister (Dani), Dad and I looked at films and coach (Stephenson) told me to go to the goal more.”

Rion Baccus’ point producing penchant differentiates her from older sister and teammate Dani Baccus, a senior and HardinSimmons women’s basketball signee.

“They are sisters, but both are so different,” said Stephenson, who has coached each since junior high.

“Dani is more of a floor general: a pass-first point guard,” he said.

“Rion is a scorer.”

During her freshman season, the younger Baccus stepped into the Lady Hornets’ starting line-up and helped Dodd City reach its sixth-consecutive regional tournament. The Lady Hornets lost in the Region III-1A

Dolberry had 13 points in the start, including a lay-up with 27 seconds left to cut the deficit to two points in the eventual 6056 loss.

“This team plays so well together,” he said. “Every night, there can be a different leading scorer.

“The thing is: They enjoy playing with one another.”

Dani Baccus echoed similar sentiments about this year’s Lady Hornets, “We are a different team than last year,” said the older Baccus sister. “We work a lot better together.”

That cohesion has showed, despite graduating a couple of standouts off the 2019-20 team.

The Lady Hornets have again posted victories over much larger and ranked opponents -such as 51-46 win at perennial 4A state tournament team and champion Argyle on Nov. 24 and at 3A Gunter, 52-47, on Dec. 29, just to name a couple.

Fannin boys teams on course for hoops playoffs at midpoint

District boys basketball reached its midpoint on Jan. 19 with Fannin County teams either currently in or vying for postseason berths.

In 23-1A, Ector had an unblemished district record, despite having graduated all but one major contributor off its 2020 Region III-1A quarterfinalist team.

Dodd City held the third and final berth at the midpoint in 23-1A. Fannindel also stood within striking distance of garnering a berth in the district, while Savoy will need a secondhalf surge to get into the postseason.

The tougher tests have been needed, considering the juxtaposition again with Dodd City’s District 23-1A games -one-sided wins where the Lady Hornets have yet to allow 20 points, through Jan. 18.

An 11th-consecutive postseason and ninth-straight district title again are most likely for Dodd City, which continues to take a short-term approach.

“We never talk about going to State, regionals or anything,” said Stephenson. “We focus on day-to-day and improving as a team.

“I don’t believe in goals,” he said. “We try to play to our strengths.

“By doing that, you get where your potential is by the end of the year.”

four classroom teachers awarded Bonham Education Foundation Grants for 2021. Our winners are IW Evans teachers, Pat Goodwin and Sharon Roberts, and LH Rather Teachers, Cherie Frazier and Mattie Winkels.

The grant is available to any Bonham ISD employee and is awarded to fund innovative academic projects and programs.

It is the desire of the Foundation to award grants of up to $1000 for programs aimed at enhancing the academic experience of Bonham students through the whole range of primary, elementary, and secondary education.

Pat Goodwin says that the 4th-6th grade Gifted & Talented students will have the opportunity to learn how to build and program basic robots with the Mbots Robot kits from Makeblock. Students will learn about a variety of robotic machinery and electronic parts, and enhance their logical thinking and design skills. She hopes the experiences provided through this grant award will encourage our students to pursue careers in STEM. Sharon Roberts is excited to begin purchasing books for her Mobile Library. The books purchased will meet the needs of

and help build reading skills throughout the school year.

Cherie Frazier is excited to use the funds received to continue to serve students throughout the Fannin County Special Education Cooperative’s Life Skills program with self-help and pre-vocational training.

The Pillow and Blanket project is a big focus for the program.

The project gives students an opportunity to learn basic sewing skills, hand stitching, safety, and the use of a sewing machine. Each student will learn to make a pillow and blanket and will be able to take them home to enjoy.

Mattie Winkels also works with students throughout Fannin County in the Life Skills program. Her grant will provide students with hands-on learning experiences using materials that focus on meaningful, contemporary life skills while promoting independence, socialization and positive behavior skills.
