1 medium fresh goat cheese log 1/4 c. roasted pistachios, chopped 2 Tbsp. honey 1 Tbsp fig spread crackers or toasting a sliced baguette to make crostini’s On a small plate spread out the chopped pistachios, roll goat cheese on the pistachios to coat top and sides. Transfer to a serving tray. Drizzle honey over cheese log. In a microwave safe dish, add the fig spread (or fig jam) heat for 10 seconds. Drizzle over cheese log. Serve with crackers.

Discussion, consideration, and action to approve Treasurer’s Financial Report for December 2021: Fannin County Treasurer David Woodson began by stating the total receipts for December was $2,536,910.21; the current delinquent property tax receipts were $1,599,453.14; the sinking fund account was $150,412.40 and the local sales tax received in December was $148,011.22. A motion was then made by Commissioner Magness, seconded by Commissioner Lane, and passed to approve the report.

Discussion, consideration, and action to approve Treasurer’s Investment Report for December 2021: Mr. Woodson then gave the investment returns from the Tx pools accounts as $117,000.21; the 2020 bond money which is almost depleted had an interest of $2.00.56; the operating business money funds had an interest amount of $3.00.89.

A motion was made by Commissioner Magness, seconded by Commissioner Lane, and passed to approve the report.

Discussion, consideration, and action to set a public hearing on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at 8:50 a.m. to hear comments regarding a Change in Zoning application; Property ID# 83091, from A&R, Agriculture to LD, LowDensity Single-Family District: Fannin County Development Services Director Di Hopkins answered Judge Moore’s question if there were any changes on this item via phone. 13. Discussion and report of monies collected by Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 office for November 2021, $6,179.00: This item is also informational only.

Discussion, consideration, and action regarding time capsule for the Courthouse Restoration; funding, purchasing, possible contents: Michelle Case spoke of how her online search resulted in finding a stainless steel, 19” by 18” by 10” box that would fit, for the price of $549.00 plus shipping & handling. After some discussion, the motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve the purchase with funding not to exceed $700.00 and be taken out of the CARES fund. Commissioner Lane seconded the motion and the motion passed. Once the motion had passed, Malinda Allison and Larry Standlee with the Fannin County Historical Committee began a discussion on what the contents of the time capsule should be.

During the discussion which included the suggestion that citizens (possibly a photo) who were part of the 1966 ceremony at the courthouse, be part of the upcoming rededication activities; Judge Moore asked for citizens

Discussion, consideration, and action, per Texas Government Code *2054.5191, to enroll Fannin County employees [whose job requirements include a minimum of 25% of their time being spent on computers] into Cybersecurity Training through the Texas Association of Counties and appoint a county Administrator for the training: Fannin County Network Administrator Dustin Morrow explained who would be needing to partake in this training. Afterward, Commissioner Self made the motion that employees who have been assigned a computer and all elected officials be required to enroll in the training and that Dustin Morrow be appointed the administrator for the training. Commissioner Magness seconded the motion and the motion passed.

Discussion, consideration, and action to purchase Nitrile Gloves for Fannin County First Responders using CARES funds; amount not to exceed $300.00: Judge Moore spoke briefly to explain this was to provide gloves for the Sheriff’s Department. Commissioner Lane made the motion to approve with Commissioner Magness seconding and the motion passed.

Commissioner Self echoed her statements and spoke about the role that unfunded mandates have had in reducing county funds but noted there is an ongoing effort to get more money for road and bridgework. Commissioner Magness also stated his appreciation for the citizen of Leonard’s comments and explained how it is an ongoing effort to maintain the county roads. Judge Moore then commented on the increase in Covid numbers and how the Department of State Health Services has changed in the way they are reporting. He noted that five days ago there

were 354 active cases but was unable to give a current active case count. Regarding the fatalities, he stated that the number has increased by two and the hospitalization rate is 25.41% (up from 21.25% last week.) He advised the public to try to keep clear from getting sick and if you feel like wearing a mask please do so (though there are no mandates in place.) He concluded by stating that roads are always on his mind and the minds of the Commissioners and how there is an effort in place to move money around in the budget to free up more money for road work.

What is a Primary?

write-in candidate may pay a fee or submit a petition to the County Judge. The Independent candidate must obtain signatures from voters who themselves are Independent (have not voted in a primary or run off) and then submit the petition to the County Judge.

In accordance with Texas law, in November voters will see on the ballot candidates that have affiliated with a party or no party (Independent) but they will not know if the candidate is a current office holder (Incumbent) or a challenger. New to Texans this year was a law passed in the 87th Legislative session stating unopposed candidates

a voter does not register as a member of a party. This is known as an “open” primary.

A voter may choose one primary election they wish to participate in but there are some constraints that go with voting in a primary. Keep in mind when a voter votes in a primary the history of having voted is reported to the Secretary of State (SOS) and is also public record. How the voter voted is private but the fact that the person voted is not.

There are two other paths a potential candidate has to obtaining a place on the November ballot. A Candidate can be a write-in candidate or file as an Independent. The

REX ALLAN CLARK Rex Allan Clark passed away surrounded by his loved ones on January 16, 2022, in Bonham, Texas. He was born on November 13, 1956, to Richard Lee Clark and Bonnie Bessie Giller Clark in Dowagiac, Michigan. Rex married Vickie Davis on July 18, 1975, in Dowagiac, Michigan. Together, they shared 46 years of marriage.

Rex graduated Dowagiac High School in 1974. He joined the United States Army in 1976 to serve our country. Following his time in the army, Rex committed 20 years as the police chief for the Howard Township in Michigan and 18 years as the police chief for the city of Leonard, Texas.

Rex is a member of the First Baptist Church.

Rex is survived by his loving wife, Vickie Clark of Bonham, Texas; children, Sandra Cook and husband, Shawn, of Swartz Creek, Michigan, Tim Clark and wife, Amanda, of Ellisville, Missouri, Daniel Clark and wife Christina, of Bonham, Texas, and Kim Olson and husband, Troy, of Payneville, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren, Alex, Nate, Emily, Matthew, Alaina, Caleb, Itai, Ciarra, Cheyanne, and Caylee; brother, William Clark; and sister, Lynn Clark.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Bonnie Clark; and two brothers, Richard Clark and Robert Clark.

Rex will be missed by his family, friends, co-workers, and the people whose lives he impacted.

A visitation for Rex was held on Thursday, January 20, 2022, 6 -8 p.m., at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 701 North Cedar Street, Leonard, Texas 75452.

A funeral service was held on Sunday, January 23, 2022, at 2 p.m., at Howard Funeral Service, 201 East 3rd Street, Leachville, Arkansas 72438. A burial with military honors followed at Cardwell Cemetery.

Bonham-Alpha Lee (Jarrell) Moore, age 87, of Bonham, Texas was born on July 28, 1934, in Lamasco, Texas and passed away on Friday, January 14, 2022, in Bonham, Texas surrounded by her loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her mother, her father, and her husband James Claude Moore of Bonham, TX. Survivors include her significant other James Ricky Mullican, children, Deborah Utzman and husband John; grandchild, Jay; Connie Gentry and husband Tim; grandchildren, Jeremy, Jerrick, and Heather; son, James and daughter Libby Grace and husband Nathan; grandchildren, Jimmy, Kipp, Koby, and Candice and a total of 9 great grandchildren.

During her life Alpha enjoyed crocheting, playing card games and spending time with those she loved.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at Lamasco Cemetery. Rev. Jeremy Taylor officiated. Serving as pallbearers were Koby Grace, Kipp Grace, Jeremy Taylor and Jerrick Gentry.

Bonham-Imogene (Sangster) West, age 86, of Denison, TX was born on July 12, 1935 in Telephone, Texas to Luie and Varna (Bell) Sangster; she passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2022 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Imogene was a seamstress and member of Telephone Baptist Church. She enjoyed arts and crafts and listened to county music every day. Imogene was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend.

She is survived by daughter Matilda Flippo of Denison, TX, son, Henry Graham of Deltona, FL; granddaughter, Gala and husband Dale of Sherman, TX; great grandchildren, Michael Haggerty, and Christopher Graham; and sister, Lavelle Blackshear.

Jerome “Jerry” Windspear Shiverdecker, age 79 of Telephone, TX was born April 18, 1942 in New Madison , OH to Charles W. Shiverdecker and Ruth V. (Hill) Shiverdecker.

He passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2022.

Jerry served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era. On October 29, 1994 Jerry married Dayle Lynn (Loucks) Shiverdecker in Haltom City, TX. He retired as a Fleet Service Clerk from American Airlines in 1996. He loved playing his drums, fishing, camping and making things out of wood. Jerry was a life member of the VFW Post 4852 in Bonham, TX. Jerry is survived by his wife Dayle, daughters Debora Lynn Shiverdecker Theall of Fredericksburg, VA, Lori Ann Shiverdecker Black Jr. and husband Charles of Hope Mills, NC, son James (Jimmy) Stuart Shiverdecker of Hop Mills, NC, sister-in-law Gayle Lynn Loucks Bartlette of Traverse City, MI, Sisters Nathalee Shiverdecker Brodstock of Ohio, 1/25/22 Williams and husband Jim of Arizona.

Irma married Thurman Washington Whitfield on February 6th, 1960. They had seven children, 1/25/22 Jenny Renee Kreitel, Thurman Curtis Whitfield, Terry Lynn Prince, Darrell Dwayne Whitfield, Cindy Lee Rogers, Amanda Lee Baker, Theron Dale Whitfield, 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Irma has one sister, Sharon Ann Williams.

She was of Pentecostal faith. She retired from Walmart in Bonham.

She was a member of the Fannin County quilting clubs.

Bonham- Thurman Washington Whitfield, age 79, of Telephone, TX was born on July 5, 1942, in Aubrey, Texas to John Thurman Whitfield and Willie Wilson. He was the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters. Thurman passed at TMC Denison, Texas on Thursday, January 13th, 2022.

Thurman married Irma Lee Stallings on February 6th, 1960 in Denton, Texas. They had seven children, Jenny Renee Kreitel, Thurman Curtis Whitfield, Terry Lynn Prince, Darrell Dwayne Whitfield, Cindy Lee Rogers, Amanda Lee Baker, Theron Dale Whitfield, 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was a devout Pentecostal. He retired from Fannin County Precinct 1 as an equipment operator.

LYNN MARIE (BURK) STOKES Teddy Neal Bishop passed away Monday, January 17, 2022, at the age of 81 at Wilson and Jones Regional Medical Center in Sherman, Texas. He was born in the Texas Panhandle on May 13, 1940, to Hazel Tigert Bishop and Theodore Bishop.

Teddy moved to Electra as a youngster, and Electra was his home on and off over the years.

He ultimately settled in Trenton, Texas near his dear friend, Sherri White. Teddy and Sherri met in 1991 when she started working for him and maintained a forever friendship. Teddy called her his daughter and was proud to be at her high school graduation as well as her wedding. He was a positive influence on Sherri in her youth, something she never forgot, and, in turn, more than repaid his friendship with her loving care and attention in his old age.

Teddy was a Navy veteran and served both overseas in the Middle East and stateside in Key West, Florida as a helicopter crewman.

A quick study at almost anything, he had a wide variety of successful career endeavors, mostly in selfemployed positions.

All who knew Teddy will attest that he could spin a good story at the drop of a hat, and that he never hesitated to do so. His stories and humor will be missed.

Teddy was preceded in death by his father, Theodore Bishop; his mother and stepfather who raised him, Hazel and H.N. (Chap) Chapman; and his granddaughter, Amanda Brackeen.

Surviving him are his gracious and loving daughter friend, Sherri White; his daughter, Gracie Calger, of Electra, Texas; his great granddaughter, Mikaela Marie Brackeen Jones of Florida; his sister, Carol Ann Lloyd of Farmersville, Texas; and, his brother Willie Chapman of Austin, Texas.

Committal will be at the Dallas/ Fort Worth National Cemetery.

A Visitation for Barbara Ann Morrell, age 74, of Bonham, Texas was held on Monday, January 24, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wise Funeral Home. Barbara passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Texoma Medical Center in Bonham, Texas.

Barbara was born on May 16, 1947, in Maryland, the daughter of W. E. Dawes and Mitzie Flora Anne Beeman Dawes. She worked in the medical field as a Telemetry Tech for over 35 years; working most recently at Texoma Medical Center in Bonham, Texas.

Barbara attended Allen’s Chapel Baptist Church. She painted most of her life; landscapes and animals being her favorites to paint. Barbara crocheted and knitted. She loved making booties for everyone. Crime and mystery novels were her favorite novels to read. Barbara will be greatly missed. She is preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Buddy Whiteman.

JOSEPH BERNARD SCHMIDT Bonham-Lynn Marie (Burk) Stokes, age 63, daughter, of Clifford D. Burk was born on October 31, 1958 in Providence, Rhode Island. She went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 14, 2022 at Texoma Medical Center Denison, TX; surrounded by her loving family and loved ones.

Lynn was a loving mother to 3 biological children, and many more that she picked up along the way. She was a devoted “Nawnie” and often said that her greatest joy in life was watching her children raise her grandchildren.

Her laughter was contagious, and she made quality friends everywhere she went. She saw the best in everyone, and had a generous, loving heart, and a kind forgiving nature.

Lynn was an avid gardener and bird lover. We rarely came across a flower or bird that she couldn’t name. She loved all things outdoors, and there was nothing she enjoyed more than a hot cup of coffee and a good fall thunderstorm.

She is preceded in death by her father, Clifford D. Burk, her sister, Catherine “Cathy” (Burk) Wegley, and sister-in-law Donna Brooks.

Lynn is survived by her son, Billy Mitchell and wife Stephanie and their children, Braeleigh, Cori and Cooper Mitchell of Ft. Bonham-Joseph Bernard Schmidt, age 62 of Bonham, Texas was born on March 5, 1959 in New Orleans, LA to Joseph B. Schmidt and Esther Darlene Sizemore. He passed away on Monday, January 17, 2022 while at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas.

Joseph served in the United States Air Force and worked in maintenance at Clyde Cosper Texas State Veterans Home. He is survived by mother, Esther Sizemore of the home; father, Joseph B Schmidt of Mandeville, LA; sister, Karen Schmidt of Bonham, TX; and daughter Darnell Schmidt. He is preceded in death by son, Joseph E. Schmidt and brother, Kenny Schmidt.

REV. SAMMIE LEE HOLLOWAY SR.

Funeral Services for Rev. Sammie Lee Holloway Sr., age 82, of Bonham Texas were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 21, 2022 at New Home Baptist Church under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Burial followed at Gates Hill Cemetery.

Sammie passed away Monday, January 10, 2022.

Sammie was born July 18, 1939, the son of Rev. Jamison Holloway and Sallie GoodenHouse.

He accepted the Lord at an early age. He was a retired farmer and pastored several churches in the panhandle and north Texas before uniting with New Home Baptist Church.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and working on cars and lawn equipment in his free time.

by Rich Hilliard DODD CITY -- A stifling defense last season led Class 1A Dodd City’s Lady Hornets to an undefeated State basketball title.

New head coach Landon Dyer wanted that to remain as a hallmark of the team.

“We will be a basketball team that is strong on the defensive end,” said Dyer on June 23.

“We will want to be a very aggressive team,” he said, “that gets after all we play.

“We want defense to be our identity.”

Dodd City placed ninth in the Diamond Pro/THSB Top-10 Class 1A pre-season baseball poll posted Jan. 15 online at txhighschoolbaseball.com.

The Hornets garnered the ranking on the strength of having seven starters returning from a run to the regional finals and 26-3 overall record

in 2021. Dodd City qualified for the postseason as the undefeated 12-2A overall champion and the district’s No. 1 qualifier for the 1A postseason.

Meanwhile, 2A Cooper, which also competes in 122A during district play with Dodd City, Honey Grove and Sam Rayburn, garnered a mention amongst 10 teams listed after the 2A Top 20.

Elsewhere, Gunter, which vies in 11-3A with Bonham and Leonard, placed third in the 3A Top-20 poll. Gunter at 11-3 last spring shared the district title with Bells and Pottsboro -- only two games ahead of fourth-place qualifier Bonham -- before being a 36-9 State semifinalist.

This is something that doesn’t translate well to summer heat, but when it’s cold, here comes the fire. Strange, isn’t it, our love affair with a fireplace? Makes absolutely no sense. Today, we can make houses so impervious to cold that every time we light a candle, the temperature goes up ten degrees. So what do we do? We cut a hole in this sealed
