Press Release - The Creative Arts Center is excited to announce their second Sweets, Hearts, & Sparkles Event to be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 from 10:00am - 4:00pm.

This event will be part of the I Love Bonham Shopping Stroll organized by the Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce.

Artist vendors are invited to set up inside the Creative Arts Center to offer their creations for sale to include original artwork, jewelry, pottery, wood, lotions & soaps, and other unique & unusual handmade items.

Admission for the shopping event is free for the public.

Shoppers are encouraged to first go to the Bonham Chamber Office at 327 N Main in Bonham to pick up their shopping passport. As shoppers visit each location on the passport, they

will get special stamps (no purchase necessary.) The Creative Arts Center will be one of the locations listed on the shopping passport. At 4 pm, shoppers are encouraged to go to Neighbors Place Winery to turn in their passports, enjoy some food and beverages and wait to see which passports get drawn for prizes.

The Center is now accepting vendor applications. The cost for CAC members to rent a vendor space is $35.00 per table; Non-member vendors may rent tables for $50.00 each. The Hudsonville orphanage was located in Hudsonville, Fannin County.

Hudsonville is a small town located 1.9 miles S.W. of Lamasco on FM1396.

A Post Office operated there from 1912 to 1914. By 1915 the community comprised a population of 150, two general stores, a school, a church and a weekly newspaper. In 1936 the population was 50 and one business. Between 1980 and 1990 only 5 residents were remained. Date ca.1890

the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard.

With 1/15 being a county holiday and 1/16 not getting above 20 degrees our team has been limited in their work this past week. They are out clearing off brush on various county roads as well as two mattresses that residents had called in about. While these type projects are labor intensive it will help immensely to prevent culverts form clogging up and when we start cleaning out drainage ditches. The use of the skid steer with the grapple is a big help on the larger trees and we will be purchasing a grapple for the mower tractor to help in doing this type of work. As an update, the brush cutter should be back up and

running next week.

One issue the commissioner's court took up this past week was to compensate five sheriff's officers that had lost a total of 158.24 hours of vacation pay due to exceeding the maximum allowed vacation hours that could be carried over. This has occurred due a staff shortage at the sheriff's office and the currently employed deputies are not able to use their accrued vacation time within our policy guidelines.

To prevent any future loss of vacation time any deputy that might lose hours going forward from not being able to take off will be compensated for them on the next paycheck.

There is no effect on the sheriff's budget as funds currently budgeted for the unfilled positions will be used to compen-

sate for any lost vacation time.

The sheriff's office has some new hires in the pipeline and this should help eliminate the issue over time.

In a large bowl mix together your butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in your eggs and continue to mix until blended. Add in your flour and mix again until smooth.

Pour in your lemon extract and 7up and beat to combine.

Fold in your cherries. Grease a 10" bundt pan with shortening, then dust it with flour. Spread the batter into the prepared bundt pan and bake for 70-90 minutes or until center is set.

The exact time will depend on your oven and pan so watch it closely. Allow the cake to cool for 10-15 minutes in the pan. Turn the cake onto serving dish. Using a skewer, poke holes all over the top of the cake and pour your reserved cherry juice slowly over the top making sure the juice gets soaked up. It's ok for it to seep to the bottom to soak as well.

Let cool completely. Meanwhile mix together your glaze ingredients and drizzle over the top of you cake. Top with more cherries if desired.

Another option is to poke holes in the cake while it is still in the pan. Then drizzle the juice over. This contains the juice in the pan and may be less messy.

Your red will end up more on the bottom of the cake, so it really depends on the look you want to have. Either way will work!

Fannin County Commissioners Court – The Heroes Among Us County Civil Attorney Andy Garner confirmed to Judge Cunningham that an agreement was reached with the City of Bonham that included the City being responsible for that which falls within their Extraterritorial Jurisdiction as well as property the City owns that falls within the lake buffer zone. Afterwards, a motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve the agreement and approve the signing of the agreement by Judge Cunningham. Commissioner Self seconded the motion which passed.

15. Approval of Interlocal Agreement between Fannin County and the City of Leonard related to development and implementation of regulations in Extraterritorial Jurisdictions (ETJ) – County Judge: This was passed on as it is still in negotiations.

Judge Cunningham advised the county would not be agreeing to any tax abatement for certain projects as lessons have been learned by previous actions of the court that fell short of being beneficial to the county. He commented on the role of the Fannin County Appraisal District.

Tuesday, January 16, 2024, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham called to order at 9:00 a.m., the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. The Quorum was established with all County Commissioners and County Judge present. The Invocation was led

by Judge Cunningham with Pledges being led by Major James Manis, Retired. There were no Introductions.

5. Presentation of awards

by Sheriff Johnson: Sherriff Mark Johnson explained how Deputies Puccini and Schwerdtseger had responded to a two-vehicle accident that occurred in Savoy, December 6, 2023. While the officers were working on the case, one of the gentlemen involved in the accident (Mark Kelley) was collecting personal property from his vehicle when he was accidentally shot by a shotgun. The officers came to his aid immediately rendering what would be lifesaving care to Mr. Kelley. In recognition of their quick thinking and lifesaving assistance, the Deputies were presented the “Citizens Life Saving Award.”

Local news stations were on hand to report on the ceremony.

6. Public Forum: Republican Chairperson of Precinct 18, Mary Hale, spoke to inform and invite the court and the public to the Republican Candidate Forum that is being held Saturday, January 20th at the Fannin County Multipurpose Complex in Bonham.

She noted that though the 20 candidates running for various offices (the largest number of candidates to run for public office in Fannin County) are slated to begin speaking at 9:30 a.m., a special “meet and greet” time is set aside at 9:00 a.m. for those who would like to personally meet the candidates. Also noted was an announcement of the event being in this week’s issue of the Fannin County Leader and the event being livestreamed on Leonard Graphic’s Facebook page.

ROUTINE ITEMS: 7. Approve payment of bills – County Auditor: After Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple noted the bills were $ 195,516.95, a motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve payment with Commissioner Kopf seconding the motion which passed.

8. Approve minutes from 01/09/2024 (R), 08/25/2021 (S), and 08/24/2021 (R) – County Clerk: Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve the minutes and after Judge Cunningham confirmed with Deputy Clerk Angela Frazier that the 2021 dates were correct (she noted though they had been completed back then, they were never sent for approval by the court), Commissioner Self seconded the motion which passed.

9. Report of monies received by the County Clerk’s office for December 2023; Land Records, $31,288.50, All courts combined, $14,193.80 – County Clerk: Informational Only.

DISCUSSION, CONSIDERATION AND ACTION ITEMS: 10. Approve allowing Sheriff Department Deputies to

accrue more than the maximum 120 hours of vacation pay due to staff shortages and the inability to use time accrued – County Auditor: Ms. Whipple explained how she had spoken with five deputies who have collectively accrued 158 hours of vacation pay over the 120-max, due to overtime work performed because of an under-staffing situation that existed at the time the hours accrued. An in-depth discussion occurred where it was determined Sheriff Johnson was in approval of action being taken to assure the deputies would not lose vacation pay, that was over the maximum set; for filling in where needed. After details were discussed among the court, including the fact that more deputies were being hired that should alleviate this problem going forward; it was decided the 158 hours owed, would be paid out to the deputies and going forward, should the situation occur again, vacation hours above the 120hour maximum, would be paid out during the pay period they occurred instead of allowing them to accrue. Commissioner McQueen made a motion to reflect the above-mentioned decision with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed.

11. Consider allowing Sheriff Department Deputies more than three months to use any excess vacation pay accrued – County Auditor: See item 10.

12. Approval of increasing Constable, Precinct 1 travel allowance from $3,000.00 to $6,000.00 – County Auditor: Ms. Whipple explained how the previous Constable of Precinct 1 had been paid to use his own vehicle as there was not a car in the county pool for his use. With the help of input from Fannin County Purchasing Agent Edwina Lane, she explained the cost of outfitting a vehicle with all the equipment needed in the course of duties performed (radio, radar, camera equipment) and how it would be less expensive for the county to go this route as opposed to obtaining a properly outfitted county vehicle. After a lengthy discussion that included a comment from a citizen regarding liability insurance coverage on a personal vehicle being used; and after noting the amount would be paid out monthly and would come out of the county’s contingency budget, a motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve with Commissioner McQueen seconding the motion which passed.

13. Approve going out for bid for a used pickup truck for Precinct 2 – Purchasing Agent: Ms. Lane explained the need for this with Commissioner Self explaining this would be replacing a truck recently sold in an auction. A motion was made by Commissioner Self to approve going out for bids for a four door 4-wheel drive pickup truck with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed.

“Greater Love”

Hello everyone!

One of my favorite scriptures is John 15:13. Here, Jesus is speaking to the disciples before He is to be crucified. In this verse, He says, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus Christ loved us so much that He willingly gave His life on that cross so that you and I could have eternal life through Him. This love is the most precious gift that we could ever receive. As I have said before, why anyone would not want to accept such love is beyond me. I accepted the Lord as my Saviour at the age of 6 in vacation Bible school. If you haven’t accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, I hope and pray that today will be the day that you do. It is the best decision you will ever make in your life.

A classic hymn that tells about this kind of love was written by Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676) in 1653, and translated 86 years later by John Wesley (17031791).

The Church Of The Bible

The scriptural church will make known the wisdom of God. This is the eternal purpose that God purposed in Christ Jesus. Paul wrote that the intent of God is that “the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God” (Ephesians 3:10). Paul goes on to write that this is God’s “eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Ephesians 3:11).

The church, as revealed in the Bible, reflects the wisdom of God. The church that Jesus founded (Matthew 16:18), the church that submits to Jesus Christ as its head (Ephesians

5:23-24), is far from being an embarrassment to God. When the church manifests the wisdom of God, it is God’s purpose.

The church, as revealed in the Bible, is part of God’s eternal plan. Therefore, it wasn’t the object of last-minute planning. God had the church in His mind from eternity (Ephesians 3:11). God had planned its work, worship, purpose, terms of entrance and exit, organizational structure, and what it would teach and practice. Therefore, the only flaws that the church has will be those caused by human failure to obey God’s instructions.

The church today will only manifest the wisdom of God when the church is standing on the side of God's wisdom,

that is, following His Word.

The church is right when it obeys the commands of its head, Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:20-22). Paul stated that “If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord” (1 Corinthians 14:37).

Paul encouraged us to “preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine” (2 Timothy 4:2), because “all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Fannin County Call to Prayer for Revival

By Lyn Holly- Pastor, Calvary Baptist Church The third Fannin County Call to Prayer for Revival and Spiritual Awakening will be held Sunday, February 18 at 5:00 PM at 7th & Main Baptist Church. These calls to countywide, focused prayer arise out of a desperate need for true revival and spiritual awakening.

Our culture is getting farther and farther away from God and His Word every day. Sin is celebrated. God’s Word and followers of Jesus are mocked and ridiculed.

The only hope for this county and this nation is a true revival.

The word revival is very misunderstood. It often conjures up images of a series of church meetings with an evangelist and guest singer. True biblical revival is far different. The word revival comes from two Latin phrases, re, which means “again” and vivere, which means “to live.” So, basically it means to “live again.” If a person suffers a heart attack, CPR can often be used to “revive” that person. Let me give you a good definition within a spiritual context: Revival is “restoring spiritual vitality to a lifeless person, family, church or nation.”

Every word is important. It is something that is restored. If you’ve never “had spiritual vitality” there’s no way you can “get it again.” Spiritual vitality means “spiritual zeal, excitement, enthusiasm and fervor.”

If you’ve never been that way before, you don’t need a revival, you need a “vival!” A lifeless person is someone who has lost their zeal and their spiritual life and is dull, dead and despondent. Have you ever been more excited about Jesus or more faithful to Jesus than you are at this moment?

If you answer “yes” you need a revival. I agree with Pastor Chris Gowen who wrote: “The greatest need in our land today is a Heaven-sent revival! Not a manmade, or

a program-generated revival, but a Revival straight from the throne room of God on High!

Man can’t produce it. Never has there been a preacher who could preach it up. Never has there been a choir, or a quartet that could sing it up. If it is a real revival, it will be because sovereign God has intervened in people’s lives. Church services will take on a new face.

It will not be services as usual. Revival is not eyes full of tears. That can be done by the flesh. It is not shouting. That can be done by the flesh, too.”

True revival happens when people get honest with God about their sin, and enter into sincere confession and repentance of sin. Isaiah 5:20 states, “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

Simply put, if the Bible calls it sin, it is sin. In our culture, we are constantly justifying our sin by calling it something else.

In order to gain a full understanding of what true revival is, it is helpful to study the history of revivals in America.

Personal and national revivals are not just some golden ideal that can never be attained.

Spiritual awakenings have been historically documented in our nation’s history. I have been a student of great revivals for many years. Since many of our American history books have recently been re-written to remove most spiritual and religious references, let me give you an American history lesson about our rich spiritual heritage. There have been two great national revivals, which historians call Spiritual Awakenings.

In the following three weeks, we will study the history of revival and spiritual awakening in America. We will also learn how to more specifically and effectively pray for revival. In the meantime, we pray with psalmist, “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in You?”

Recent research has shown that drinking coffee can help protect you from developing frightening common neurodegenerative disorders like dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease. made the Midwestern State University 2023 fall dean's honor roll while simultaneously competing in her first collegiate women's track and field semester.

Requirements to make MSU's dean's honor roll each semester include: completing at least 12 hours and having a 3.5-3.74 grade-point average with no grade lower than a C. Cavender on Dec. 9 posted a 27.67 -- her first collegiate time -- in the women's 200-meter dash at Pittsburg State University's Crimson & Gold Invitational in Kansas.

She also ran that day as part of MSU's women's 4x400-meter B relay.

by Rich Hilliard Dodd City multiplesport standout Lindsey Mauppin earned a 4.0 grade-point average during the 2023 fall semester, as she began her days as a two-sport athlete at East Central University (Okla).

Mauppin made her collegiate women's cross country debut on Aug 31 at the Rogers State Invitational in Tulsa, before

a stress fracture injury truncated her first season.

She has recovered in time for her first ECU softball season which begins at Piedmont High School against vs Newman University for three games during a two-day span: Friday, Feb. 2, at 2 and 4 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m.

Mauppin appears on the ECU softball roster as a pitcher and utility player and will wear No. 11.

Last winter, the Rebels (29-7) won their first boys' district title in the sport since 2018, made their first regional tournament trip since 1983 and advanced their most rounds in the boys' basketball playoffs.

They have started strongly again this season: 16-9 overall and 5-1 in District 14-2A through Jan. 16.

WWII Roundtable Program Sponsored by Alliance Bank

Alliance Bank will sponsor a history program given by John A. Pearce, arranged by the World War II History Roundtable, Audie Murphy Chapter, at the American Cotton Museum in Greenville January 25 at 7 p.m. The public is invited.

There is no charge.

With a world war looming and to obtain another income young men from around Northeast Texas joined the Texas Army National Guard in 193940. They spent once or twice per week at practice in places like Paris and Greenville, but in late November 1940 they were shocked to be called up for active duty. Now weekly training was in Brownwood at Camp Bowie! The unit became part of the United States Army 36th Infantry Division and participated in the massive Louisiana Maneuvers of September 1941.

Weekend trips home were common until February 1942 when they were moved to

Camp Blanding in Florida, to North Carolina in July, then finally in August the base was at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. By April 1943 the men were in Oran, French North Africa, and after more training, a few accidents, thick boredom, practice, and maneuvers, on September 9 the well-prepared 36th Division was part of an invasion at Salerno, Italy. The Texans were now a portion of the 5th Army.

Frank Webster Pearce of Sulphur Springs was with Company C, 111th Engineers, aiding the 143rd Infantry Combat Team which had several members from Northeast Texas under fire that day. For instance, Captain Mark Hodges of Paris was hit and immediately out of action for the duration of the war. Company C lost two of its engineers. And, Loyd L. Patterson of Greenville helped “eliminate” a German machine gun nest. The landing was horrendous, and it got no better as the men moved north toward Rome.

For the next two years Pearce was attentive enough to place notes about events into a diary, and write interesting letters

home. In 2021 the narrative was turned into a book by his son, John A. Pearce, a former Allen High School head football coach and later the Houston Touchdown Club’s Texas football coach of the year after a successful season at Fort Bend Willowridge High School. Following a stint as an assistant at Texas A&M, Pearce became head coach of the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin University. He later coached at UCLA and Rice University.

With retirement the alumnus of East Texas State University turned to a writing career and with the help of State House Press published A Private in the Texas Army. A serious, sometimes humorous, and always detailed look at the Division’s movements, the stories are linked with unit histories so the reader can follow the action.

(TPWD) Cooper FAIR. Water lightly stained; 50 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. Few anglers braving the cold weather but expect the blue catfish bite to pick up.

Grapevine SLOW. Water stained; 52 degrees; 0.81 feet above pool. White bass and crappie are in deep water along the edges of the creek channels fishing with light lures or slabs with a stinger hook. Use as light of bait that you can so you can feel the bite. Crappie jig with a quarter ounce jig. Report by Omar Cotter, Luck O’the Irish Fishing Guide Service.

Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 49-52 degrees; 1.66 feet below pool. Bass are cold blooded, so expect the bite to be slow while fish are lethargic after the recent cold snap. The bite should improve as the weather warms. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Black bass are moving deep for the winter to flooded tree tops in 30 plus feet of water. Cast Clousers, ned rigs, and large shad patterns with sinking lines. Crappie are moving out to the open water in 30 plus feet of water casting small jig patterns with full sinking lines. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 50 degrees; 1.66 feet below pool. Freezing temperatures have kept anglers off the water, but expect the pattern to hold steady. Crappie are 20-30 feet deep on brush and condos biting minnows and 1/16-⅛ ounce jigs. Suspended crappie are hunting threadfin shad, they will have little arches on your 2D, under the clouds of shad. Fish at the depths you see them at. Otherwise look for them in and around submerged structures.

The color of the jigs does not matter. White bass are in 25-35 feet of water on main lake points, underwater, humps, or sometimes just out in the middle. Fish can be caught with minnows, live, minnows, live threadfin if you can keep them alive, or dead sticking jigs or white or chartreuse slabs. Sometimes you have to put it in their face, then reel up to get them to eat.

Making noise such as a thumper or tapping the bottom of your boat with a broom handle will get them underneath your boat if they are in the area. Catfish are spread throughout the lake shallow, mid depth and deep. Check shallow. 1-5 feet of water, for big blue catfish then work your way to deeper water. Catfish can be caught with a Santee rig with a 2 ounce weight, dragging them behind the boat, using my Trolling Motor as most of the days have been a little calm out. Find the wall of bait, approximately 10 feet thick and drop your bait when you see them and there will be cats in the area. Report by Carey Thorn, White Bass Fishing Texas.

Tawakoni EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 52 degrees; 0.13 feet below pool. Lake Tawakoni has settled into a solid winter pattern especially following the arctic blast the last couple of days. Expect fishing to slow as the waters have rapidly cooled off. As of right now the hybrid stripers and white bass bite has been decent. We are seeing fish on the main lake suspended with giant schools of threadfin shad. Presenting artificial lures to these fish is challenging but when done correctly fish are being put in the boat. The trophy catfish bite has been decent. Fish are being caught in the 40 foot range on fresh cut gizzard shad. The crappie bite has been the most reliable of all the fish currently. Bridge pylons and deep timber have consistently put fish in the boat. Minnows and jigs are working equally as well. Depth ranges have been 20-30 feet. The eater catfish bite has been slow. The largemouth bass bite has also been slow. Report by Captain Michael Littlejohn, Lake Tawakoni Guide Service.

Texoma GOOD. Water normal stain; 55 degrees; 1.05 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is good drifting flukes along the river ledges in 60-80 feet of water off the bottom. Bigger fish in the stumps on shallow points 15-25 feet of water with swimbaits. Catfish are good for eater size fish and a few bigger fish drifting cut gizzard shad in 40-50 feet of water off the bottom.

Crappie are slow on the boathouse structures using jigs and dead minnows. Bass are fair on jerkbaits along the bluffs in 10-12 feet of water and in the stumps on points in 15-20 feet of water. Striped bass can be caught deadsticking in open water, or off drop offs, humps and points in 10-20 feet of water biting ice cubes, icicles, and swimbaits.

Toledo Bend GOOD. Water clear; 47 degrees; 3.65 feet below pool. Rain is in the forecast next week, and after the recent cold weather and high winds there are few anglers on the water.

Shallow fish will be difficult to catch, so best to key on fish in the 8-20 feet range. Report by Stephen Johnston, Johnston Fishing.

Beuershausen reeled in his 13.34-pound Legacy Class ShareLunker 648 on March 11 during a tournament. at O.H. Ivie Reservoir.

“TPWD staff arrived quickly that day to collect her and were very careful handling the fish,” said Beuershausen.

“I really respect what TPWD does and think this is an awesome program. The results of the work TPWD is doing are shown in our lakes. We never caught 25- to 30-pound bags up until the last 15–20 years since this program has been in place. This is a big deal to us.”

Beuershausen said it was an incredible surprise to learn that he won the year end prize drawing.

“This Bass Pro Shops shopping spree is really the icing on the cake,” added Beuershausen. “The whole experience with the ShareLunker program since I caught the Legacy Lunker has been amazing. Everyone has been great, and it was awesome to be able to go to the ShareLunker banquet and see the operation firsthand at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens.”

In addition to the 18 Legacy Class Lunkers donated by anglers, Shawn Strength from Raymond, Miss. submitted a massive Legend Class Lunker Nov. 15 from O.H. Ivie.

His fish weighed in at 16.65 pounds and joined Texas’ Top 50 biggest largemouth bass of all-time list. Strength also collected a genetic sample from his catch and sent it to TPWD for analysis.

These anglers can call the ShareLunker hotline at (903) 681-0550 to report their catch 24/7 through March 31, 2024.

Anglers who catch and loan one of these 13-plus pound lunkers earn Legacy Class status, receive a catch kit filled with merchandise, a 13lb+ Legacy decal for their vehicle or boat, VIP access to the Toyota ShareLunker Annual Awards event, a high-quality replica mount of their fish from Lake Fork Taxidermy, and Bass University will provide a swag pack and annual subscription. Bernice E. Goodeve Schweizer, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother & aunt passed away peacefully at The Honey Grove Nursing Center at the age of 100 on January 14, 2024. Arrangements are under the direction of Wise Funeral Home, Bonham, TX. Bernice was born on September 28, 1923 in Oradell, NJ to Henry & Ernestine (Mahler) Goodeve. After graduating from Tenafly High School in 1941, Bernice began working at NY Telephone Co and enrolled at Columbia University for night school for a year, then transferred to NYU. She was with the NY Telephone Co for ten years. Bernice married her longtime sweetheart John (Jack) Henry Schweizer on December 17, 1945. The two met in grade school when they were both living in Bergenfield, NJ, however, Jack’s family left the area and it was not until May of 1943 that their paths crossed again. Bernice would say they were suited for one another right from the start and she always knew she would marry him one day.

They were married for 67 wonderful years until her beloved Jack passed away on February 13, 2013. Bernice and Jack lived most of their adult life in Upper Saddle River, NJ, where they raised their two sons Kenneth John Schweizer and Walter Dean Schweizer. Weekends and summers were spent at their lake house on Lake Wallenpaupack, PA. Bernice and Jack retired in Punta Gorda, FL where they enjoyed sailing on The BerJac as members of The Punta Gorda Boat Club & The Charlotte Monday-Friday 9-5:30 Harbor Yacht Club. Summers were still spent on Lake Wallenpaupack - the focal 204 E. Sam Rayburn Dr. •point Bonham, Texasfamily 75418activities. They traveled the world together, sailed and camped of many to many wonderful places, but Bernice would say her greatest accomplishment was being a wife and mother. Her grandchildren & great-grandchildren would say her greatest accomplishment was being their grandmother. She looked forward to weekends, holidays, and summers together in Pennsylvania and Florida. Bernice loved to entertain, bake, sew, swim, water ski, hike and bike all done with such elegance and grace. Bernice lived a wonderful, full life and was dearly loved by her sweetheart, Jack, her family, and friends. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all of her heart. During her last few years she resided in Honey Grove, TX, where she was blessed to have been in the care of her family as well as The Honey Grove Nursing Center, who loved and cared for her unconditionally. A very special thank you to all the wonderful caretakers and staff at the Honey Grove Nursing Center.

Bernice is preceded in death by husband, Jack Schweizer, son, Walter Dean Schweizer, parents, Henry and Ernestine Goodeve, sister, Audrey Fox, and brother, Henry George Jr. She is survived by son, Kenneth John Schweizer and wife Dorothy of Dodd City, TX, former daughter-in-law, Donna Schweizer of Ramsey, NJ, son Walter Schweizer’s long time companion, Debora Gottshall of Valencia, PA, grandchildren, Jillian Villani (Ralph), Ryan Schweizer (Courtney), Adam Schweizer (Hillary), Lee Schweizer (Sarah), great-grandchildren, Tyler, Gianna, Aiden, Sophia, Jack, Quinn, Landon, Mackenzie, Logan, and Everly. Bernice was loved by her many nieces, nephews, and friends near and far, some who have passed before her.

Bernice was a member of the Saddle River Reformed Church/ Old Stone Church in Upper Saddle River, NJ and the family invites you to honor the life of Bernice at her home church on May, 4, 2024 at 1pm. LONETA FAYE (PROWSE) HOLMES Loneta Faye (Prowse) Holmes was born May 4, 1932, to Cecil and Florence Prowse in Sash, Texas.

Mrs. Holmes passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024, in Paris, Texas.

Services for Loneta Holmes were held Thursday, January 18, 2024, at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel, in Honey Grove, TX beginning at 4:00pm. Bro. Terry Paul Cunningham and Mr. Nolan Butler presided. Interment followed at Allens Point Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Joey Rickman, Calvin Loftice, John Mahler, Tony Edelhouser, Thump Witcher, Mark Stallings, and Terry Neely.

Loneta married the love of her life Thomas Holmes on June 6, 1949, in Honey Grove, Texas. The couple spent 67 wonderful years together, before Mr. Holmes’ passing in 2016. Once her kids started high school Loneta went to work as a seamstress and continued doing so for over 40 years.

Mrs. Holmes is survived by her sons; Thomas Ray Holmes, Terry Holmes, Steve Holmes, Tim Holmes and Amanda Barnard, Mike Holmes, daughter; Peggy Thomason, grandchildren; Chad Thomason and Wendy, Kimberly Emerson and Shawn, John Thomas Milton, Ryan Holmes and Paulette, 10 great-grandchildren, sisters; Elizabeth Armstrong, and Helen and Charles Kuhn, brothers; Larry Prowse, and Bobby Prowse, sister-in-law; Latricia Prowse, and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Cecil and Florence, husband; Thomas Holmes, daughter; Kathy Milton, and Brother; Billy Prowse.

LEE BROOKSHIRE

Lee Brookshire went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 11, 2024 peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones. Lee was a Christian and longtime member of Edhube Baptist Church. She was born to Americus Bruner and Ruby Vest on September 8, 1929 in Tyler, Texas.

Lee was a licensed beautician as well as a homemaker. She was a self taught Craftsman who loved to work with her hands. She also enjoyed painting, sewing, gardening, woodworking, and fishing. She was a wonderful artist whose paintings are treasured keepsakes for her family. Lee was happiest when she was with her family and friends. She delighted in helping others and loved all animals, especially her dogs and cats.

Lee is survived by her son, Terry T. Brookshire of Bonham; grandchildren, Rhonda Austin McEldowney and husband Dr. Scott McEldowney of Klamath Falls, Oregon; Paul Austin and wife Flor of Cypress, Texas; Zachary Austin and wife Leighanna of Angleton, Texas; Ruby Lee Brookshire of Mabank, Texas; Terry Lee Brookshire of Bonham; Harley Brookshire and his wife Frannie and Suzanna Brookshire, all of Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and several great grandchildren; one sister, Lois Benkendorfer and husband Scooter of China Springs, Texas; as well as nieces and nephews.

Lee was proceeded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Ted Brookshire; sons, Richard Austin and Tommy Lee Brookshire; siblings, Vera Stone, Claude Bruner and Joyce Miller; and one grandson, Thomas A. Brookshire.

Lee will be greatly missed with her quick wit and sweet smile.

Her grandchildren, lovingly referred to her as “Meems”, she will forever live on in our hearts.

A visitation was held Wednesday, January 17, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Mullican Little Funeral Home 754 State Hwy 56 E. Bells, Texas 75414. Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Mullican Little Funeral Home.

Burial followed at Hampton Cemetery in Bonham.

By Shelby Shank Field Editor Below-freezing temperatures hit parts of Texas this week, but farmers and ranchers, like Kade and Morgan Hodges of Sterling City, are hard at work caring for livestock through this arctic blast.

“We’ve had three consecutive days of temperatures near or below freezing.

The lowest temperature we reached was 8 degrees and a brief light snow on Sun-

day,” Morgan said.

Although conditions are cold, Kade said this doesn’t compare to Winter Storm Uri in 2021.

“We have experienced much worse. The February 2021 cold snap was significantly worse in Sterling County. We experienced a full week below freezing, along with windy and icy conditions,” Kade said.

“We know this is mild compared to winter storms up north, but it’s quite severe for our area.”

To prepare for the cold weather, the couple covered all exposed pipes and faucets and made sure their generator was in working order. Kade and Morgan added anti-gel to tractors and ranch equipment that required diesel and made sure they had enough propane for heaters.

“With the cold weather here, we made sure we had plenty of long stem hay for our livestock,” Kade said.

Kade and Morgan are thankful the freezing weather isn’t much worse and that they had time to prepare.

“Prepare for the cold as early as you can. Purchase supplies, such as heat lamps, before you need them, because when you need them, so does everyone else,” Kade said.

“Make sure to have hot coffee in the morning, and we’re ready to go.”

Uvalde Victims’ Families Get An Official Acknowledgement Of Botched Shooting Response — But Some Want Criminal Charges

By William Melhado, Madaleine Rubin and Pooja Salhotra, The Texas Tribune Jan. 18, 2024 UVALDE — Relatives of some of the 21 people killed in the deadliest shooting in Texas history sat in a community center on the outskirts of this town Thursday, clasping each other’s hands, nervously tapping their feet and passing around a box of tissues.

They sat in front of the nation’s top law enforcement official more than a year and half after some of them joined the throng of residents anxiously gathered outside Robb Elementary School, begging a swarm of law enforcement to go inside and save their kids trapped in a classroom with the shooter.

But responding officers waited 77 minutes to confront a gunman indiscriminately using an AR-15 against students and teachers in two adjoining fourth-grade classrooms.

In the months since the May 24, 2022 massacre, the griefstricken families of those killed have pleaded with local and state leaders to hold law enforcement accountable.

On Thursday, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and other top federal officials finally acknowledged — in critical, explicit, unapologetic terms — that some of the Uvalde victims’ worst nightmares were true: Law enforcement’s delayed and bungled response cost lives.

“When he says that lives could have been saved, I just couldn’t believe it,” said Jerry Mata, who lost his daughter Tess in the shooting. “For these officers to sit there and not do anything, and still be out there on the streets like nothing happened, and my daughter’s gone — it was hard, it was hard.”

Garland and other national leaders traveled to this town straddling Hill County and South Texas about 80 miles west of San Antonio to release the U.S. Justice Department’s review of the police response.

At a press conference Thursday, Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta shared details that families remember all too well about the day of the shooting: Children with bullet wounds were put on school buses without medical personnel, state agencies shared inaccurate information and officials incorrectly assured families waiting at the reunification center that loved ones were on another bus of survivors that never came because their kids were actually among the dead.

While Thursday’s report did not reveal significant new information, families praised the Justice Department for the most comprehensive official report to date about the shooting — and putting what they already knew in “black and white.”

“Because the DOJ stamp is on there, maybe y’all will start taking us seriously now instead of telling us to move on, telling us to sweep it under the rug,” Brett Cross, who lost his son Uziyah in the shooting, said outside the Herby Ham Activity Center immediately after Garland’s press conference.

After enduring burial after burial, waiting hours at the

Texas Capitol urging lawmakers in vain to raise the age to buy semi-automatic guns, watching media investigations confirm their assumptions and pressuring the local prosecutor to pursue criminal indictments, families are still waiting for what they consider justice — criminal prosecutions for at least some of the officers who fumbled the response.

So Thursday’s federal report and Garland’s comments were in some ways also a painful reminder that governmental reports can only have so much impact.

“It’s hard enough waking up every day and continuing to walk out on the streets and walk to an H-E-B and see a cop that you know was standing there while our babies were murdered and bleeding out,” Cross said. “I also hope that this lights a fire up under the district attorney’s ass because we know that she has not done a damn thing and we refuse to accept that.”

The Texas Department of Public Safety has yet to make public their own investigation, and the city of Uvalde and the Uvalde County District Attorney’s Office are also still conducting their own investigations.

City officials said in a Thursday statement that they anticipate their independent investigation will be completed this month. Uvalde County District Attorney Christina Mitchell, meanwhile, has provided scant details on the status of her criminal investigation.

Public officials and advocates echoed the sentiments of the families Thursday, saying they hope to see justice in the form of police accountability.

“There’s no justice until some cops get indicted for their malfeasance,” said state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, D-San Antonio, at the Uvalde town square on Thursday, prior to the DOJ press briefing.

In a statement, the president of The League of United Latin American Citizens expressed disappointment that federal investigators failed to prosecute anyone.

“Nineteen children and two teachers died, mostly Latino, and not one person is facing criminal charges yet,” said Domingo Garcia, LULAC president. “How can that be when this report affirms much of what we have known for the past 20 months.”

Garland on Thursday did not directly answer whether any officers responding to the shooting should face criminal charges. He said he would leave that to the local district attorney because the Justice Department only has jurisdiction over federal crimes.

Since the tragedy, family members have been demanding transparency and answers from government officials about the botched police response. Some of those demands created division within Uvalde, a town of about 15,000 near the Mexico border.

Vincent Salazar, whose granddaughter Layla died in the shooting, said deep division remains in Uvalde between those who are seeking answers and accountability and those who want to move on from the tragedy.

“Without justice this is go-

ing to be a split town,” Salazar told The Texas Tribune after families spoke to reporters.

Speaking of his granddaughter who was 11 at the time of the shooting, Salazar said she was an “angel” even before she died.

He remembers sitting in his recliner, the front door would slam open, Layla would rush past others in the house to greet her grandfather first. He still sits in the recliner everyday and is reminded of what was taken from his family.

After the shooting, Gov. Greg Abbott provided the first media briefing at 3:23 p.m., during which he announced an inaccurate number of victims and an incorrect last name of the subject, the DOJ report noted. The following day, the governor incorrectly stated that a Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District officer had engaged with the shooter outside the school.

At Thursday’s press conference, Garland also emphasized the need for gun control measures to prevent future tragedies.

“Our children deserve better than to grow up in a country where an 18 year old has easy access to a weapon that belongs on the battlefield, not in a classroom,” Garland said, to nods of agreement from family members.

Weeks after the shooting, federal lawmakers passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant federal gun reform in almost three decades. The measure enhanced background checks, limited access to some guns and increased funding for mental health treatment.

During last year’s legislative session, the first since the Uvalde shooting, Texas lawmakers closed a loophole in state law that allowed people who had serious mental health issues as juveniles to later purchase firearms legally. But several other proposed gun control measures failed to pass, despite advocacy from families of Uvalde victims.

Notably, a bill to raise the minimum age required to buy a semi-automatic firearm from 18 to 21 did not pass. The Uvalde gunman purchased his firearm just days after his 18th birthday.

While families of victims acknowledged that the report contains the most extensive account of the shooting, many are still hoping for more accountability.

“We’re going to continue fighting that some type of change is made in honor of our kids,” Veronica Mata, mother of Tess, said. “We have nothing left but to fight for them.

We are their voices now.”
