Commissioners Court Zoom Meeting: Department Transfer/Senate Bill Protest Letter/Fannin County Covid07/02/19 Vaccine Call Center Established

County Judge Randy Moore called to order the Regular Meeting of the Commissioners Court at 9:01 a.m. on Tuesday January 12, 2021. He began by thanking everyone for their understanding of why it was necessary to hold the meeting by Zoom instead of face to face. He explained those wishing to participate in the Public Forum segment or have a question regarding any of the items, would be allowed to do so towards the end of the meeting by sending a chat. He reminded all to state which item they would like to comment on, be sure to list their name and address and their statements would be read out loud.

A quorum was established as all commissioners along with County Judge Randy Moore were present. The Invocation was led by Pastor Joe Guest

of the 1st United Methodist Church in Leonard. Pledges were led by Major James Manis.

Introductions were skipped. Public Forum was moved to the end of the meeting.

6. Discussion, consideration and action regarding the Fannin County Declaration of Disaster Proclamation for Covid-19: County Judge Randy Moore stated that as of 3:40 p.m. Monday January 11, 2021, there were: 1,889 confirmed cases and 304 probable cases which brought the total number of Covid-19 cases in Fannin County to 2,193. Of those, 194 are active cases with 74 of them being in the prisons. There are 1,962 recovered cases, 59 fatalities and a hospitalization rate of 27.09%. He emphasized the hospitals are full to overflowing, thus explaining the need to hold the meeting by Zoom in-

Press Release - Savoy ISD has crossed a technological goal by surpassing a 1 to 1 device ratio. This began two years ago when the entire 20 year old computer infra-stucture was replaced. This provided the computer drops and wiring to handle the new devices. Since then, over 200 devices have been purchased and even more are ordered. Elementary has primarily added

ipads while high school has primarily added chrome books. Security cameras and controlled access entrances have been added. Also, the wi-fi has been enhanced and the district now has fiber optic connections between the campuses and the old radio connection is now a back-up. Approximately 25% of the costs of these upgrades were provided by grants.

Aaron’s, Inc. Donates to Open Arms Shelter

By Tina Moore Aaron’s◦Furniture◦E lectronics◦Appliances has given Open Arms Homeless Shelter a generous donation of $1,500. James Mize, General Manager of the Bonham Aaron’s store and David Hill, Aaron’s employee, presented the check to Mel McKibbon, Shelter Director, and Tina Moore, Board member, on Monday, January 11, 2021.

When David Hill arrived in Bonham last year, he was homeless with few possessions.

He only needed a few nights of help to get back on his feet. After working at several local restaurants, he got a job at the Aaron’s store in Bonham.

He has become an outstanding

employee for the company. His hard work and diligence in overcoming homelessness was shared with the company.

The company decided to give a donation to Open Arms Homeless Shelter because of David’s story. Thank you, David, for sharing your story.

Press Release - In Bonham ISD we are committed to doing all we can to keep staff and students healthy and safe. With this goal in mind, I am pleased to share that Bonham ISD will be taking part in a statewide program offering rapid COVID tests for use in schools. This program will allow BISD to test both symptomatic and asymptomatic staff and reduce the risk to our community.

WALDORF SALAD ½ cup mayonnaise or salad dressing 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon milk 2 medium unpeeled red apples, coarsely chopped (2 cups) 2 medium stalks celery, chopped (1 cup) 1/3 cup coarsely chopped nuts Salad greens, if desired In medium bowl, mix mayonnaise, lemon juice and milk until blended.

The request is to build some duplex family units and Mr. Kinnaird stated the Planning and Zoning Commission recommends approval. The question was asked what size the units would be. TX VLB’s Virtual Assistant “Maverick” Hits Milestone The agency’s newly launched system has helped 1,000 Texas Veterans AUSTIN – Today, the Texas Veterans Land Board announced its virtual assistant has helped over 1,000 Texas Veterans with requests for assistance since its inception. Maverick, a virtual assistant powered by IBM’s Watson, was launched by the VLB in July 2020 and serves as an online helper capable of quickly directing Veterans to resource pages and answering hundreds of frequently asked questions.

“As an emerging epicenter for technology, Texas is leading the nation in innovation and incorporating technology to better serve communities. I am excited to share these innovative measures and critical modernizations that provide instant resources to Veterans,” said Texas Land Commissioner and VLB Chairman George P. Bush. “Maverick will continue to serve Veterans and this milestone will be one of many over the years to come. My team and I will continue to listen to feedback of Veterans and help improve upon this largely successful initiative.”

In addition to answering questions regarding loans, Veteran homes, and Texas State Veterans Cemeteries, Maverick will also serve as

a directory that can point Veterans in the right direction to find answers to common questions outside the wheelhouse of the VLB, from VA related questions to Texas Parks and Wildlife for inquiries on how to obtain a fishing license.

Maverick can now answer questions on 136 different topics.

Maverick utilizes cutting edge AI solutions from IBM Watson and is designed to help save Veterans time and frustration. IBM Watson is AI that helps organizations predict and shape outcomes, automate complex processes, and optimize employees’ time.

Of the more than 1,100 interactions with Maverick so far, the most frequent topics Veterans have asked about include: 1. Land sales 2. Land loans 3. Home loans 4. VLB program eligibility 5. Veterans homes Maverick is using IBM Watson Assistant and IBM Watson Discovery on IBM public cloud. It uses natural language processing and machine learning to understand questions from users and deliver answers in real time. IBM Watson Assistant was trained on data and

information from the VLB. It is designed to understand when to ask for clarity and, if needed, can direct users to the VLB call center to get additional insights and information during business hours. Users can access the virtual assistant from anywhere on the VLB website. The VLB call center remains fully staffed, operational and equipped to answer questions.

Press Release - COVID Vaccines Made Available for Bonham ISD Staff: Seventy-eight Bonham ISD staff were able to receive a COVID vaccine on Thursday, January 7, 2021, at the multi-purpose complex. The vaccine was made available to healthcare personnel, first responders, and Bonham ISD employees. It was coordinated by the City of Bonham Emergency Management staff. Every staff member who signed up was able to receive the vaccine.

We appreciate the City of Bonham providing this opportunity to our employees.

For the last several years it has been the dream of the Arledge Ridge Cemetery Association to build a pavilion at the cemetery for grave side services and Homecoming Memorial.

We have plans to build a 30’X40’ structure that will be built on the west side of Hwy. 78 in the new part of the cemetery on the south end. We just recently sold the one acre plot and old church building. Even after the sale of the plot, we need additional funds to complete the project. We are establishing a building fund and asking for donations. Hopefully, the project can be completed by summer.

Maintenance costs of the cemetery continue to increase and the sale of plots continue to decrease. This is mainly because more and more people are cremating.

Therefore, the cemetery

association depletes its annual budget that comes from donations each year. Annual donations no longer cover the cost to maintain and beautify the cemetery in the way our loved ones deserve.

Our future goal, if fund raising is sufficient, is to also build a memorial for veterans. Please consider donating to this worthy cause. We cannot do this without your help! Storm Spotter Training Program Scheduled for Tuesday January 26th

Press Release - The 2021 severe weather season is not too far away, and the National Weather Service and local public safety officials want you to be ready.

The National Weather Service will be conducting a free, virtual severe weather training class for Fannin County on Tuesday, January 26th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Officially called the SKYWARN Storm Spotter Class, the program will be held in partnership with the Fannin County Office of

Emergency Management.

Registration for this online class can be found at: https://www.weather.gov/ fwd/skywarnmap.

This virtual class is being combined with Delta, Hopkins, and Lamar counties.

This class is for established storm spotters, anyone with an interest in severe weather, and/or anyone who wants to learn more about the severe weather threats in North and Central Texas and how to be prepared.

Mr. Baker began his discussion by saying the Bond Program, 20 years ago, was under the State funded Department he is currently director of and explained why it became necessary to move the program in the past to County supervision. Giving his explanation of how it can be made possible for his department to once again, become responsible for the Bond Program, he gave a breakdown of how it can be handled and how it can be beneficial to both the Bond Officer employee who is currently handling an ever increasing workload and the county. Once Mr. Baker concluded his presentation, he stated he was offering his services only due to his seeing a need for assistance and would like to have the move completed by Feb 22nd.

County Judge Randy Moore asked for comments and questions from the Commissioners. A discussion ensued that included both positive and negative views from the Commissioners and County Auditor Alicia Whipple. An “in favor of” statement from the Bond Officer, Donna Lester was made through chat on Zoom. But due to a legality issue that may need to be worked out, County Judge Moore asked for a motion to table this matter to next week so that legal consultation could be had. Motion was made by Commissioner Magness, seconded by Commissioner Self and motion passed to table this item to next week.

12. Discussion, consideration and action to approve a one-time severance of 3.844 acres from a 52.527-acre tract on CR 1535 in Ector: Fannin County Development Service Director Di Hopkins reported Zoom that all was for this to be approved. Motion was made by Commissioner

Commissioner Self added that this property was a 9.7676 acre plat that would be divided into four lots Having said that, Commissioner Self motioned to approve. Discussion, consideration and action to approve and send a letter to various state officials from the Commissioners Court regarding Senate Bills 234 and 749 and House Joint Resolution 32: Fannin County Clerk Tammy Biggar spoke to the importance of lobbyist associations that greatly benefit small rural counties that cannot afford to have their representatives always present when the legislature is being decided on, in our state’s capital. She stated that she makes several trips to Austin on behalf of Fannin County and is very appreciative of the help and advice she receives from the Texas Association of Elected Administrators as well as the Texas Association of Counties. Help, like being told when legislation has been proposed that could be detrimental to the constituents of rural counties across Texas. She said, despite the bad press lobbyists receive in the media, they are an invaluable resource to small rural counties who band together to help one another.

County Judge Randy Moore and Commissioner Lackey echoed her sentiment with Commissioner Lackey warning of the harm that could occur to small counties if the bills go through. For if they go through, Fannin County will no longer be able to use TAC. Judge Moore agreed

16. Discussion, consideration and action to approve the revision of the Courthouse first level floorplans: Fannin County Purchasing Agent Michelle Case gave an update on some necessary revisions. Motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the revision of January 12, 2021 17. Discussion, consideration and action to create a temporary position for the Covid-19 vaccination coordination: County Judge Randy Moore started a discussion regarding the huge need for a one-call, call center, to coordinate the Covid-19 vaccination for Fannin County.

After much discussion, the need for a temporary position was agreed upon and it was decided a caller can reach the coordinator Mon-Fri, 8:00 a.m. thru 5:00 p.m. to get their names on a list to receive the vaccine. In answer to a question from a caller on Zoom, Judge Moore said the call center will be for Fannin County residents. This list will be provided to the providers in Fannin County when they receive vaccines, for the providers to call those

on the list and make an appointment for them to come in to receive the vaccine.

Motion was made by Commissioner Magness to create a temporary position to be known as the Fannin County Covid Vaccine Call Center with the said position starting January 12, 2021 and running through March 10, 2021. Position to be funded through the CARES Act Grant and employee to be paid $12.00 an hour. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Lane and motion passed.

18. Discussion, consideration and action regarding personnel or supplies for Covid-19 from the CARES Act Grant or other funding: Michelle Case gave an update, no action needed.

19. Discussion, consideration and action to approve Auditor monthly reports for December 2020: County Auditor Alicia Whipple gave an update, no questions asked.

Motion was made, seconded and passed to approve reports.

20. Discussion, consideration and action to approve payment of bills: Motion was made, seconded and passed to pay the bills.

Public Forum: Fannin County Network Administrator Dustin Morrow read questions from Ray and Pam Kasler regarding the administration of vaccine doses, and a question from Bill Roberts in Leonard asking for the phone number to the newly formed call center. Judge Moore stated that questions cannot be responded to in Public Forum.

County Judge Randy Moore said Fannin County is only given vaccines as deemed needed by the state.

He said some counties in Texas haven’t gotten any vaccines yet so we should be thankful for what we have gotten so far.

He wanted it known, there was a drive-thru vaccination this week for 911 responders and some BISD teachers. Judge Moore also noted the phone number for the call center is 903-583-2189. The call center opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday (holidays excluded) and is only for those living within Fannin County.

Mississippi or Bust A Lubbock District game warden was patrolling for mule deer compliance in Lamb County when he came across a group of hunters loading up a mule deer buck. After checking their hunting licenses, the warden noticed a mule deer tag missing from one of the hunters’ license. The hunter said he hadn’t taken a deer this season. When asked about the missing tag, the man told the warden that he had put the tag on a mule deer another hunter killed. The warden asked where the antlers were located, and the hunter wasn’t certain.

Further investigation revealed the antlers were probably in Mississippi with a local taxidermist. The warden called the taxidermist and the antlers were in fact there. A Mississippi warden was contacted and the antlers were seized.

The hunter was cited for allowing another to hunt under their license. The warden later contacted the hunter who actually shot the mule deer and she was cited for hunting without a hunting license, hunting under someone else’s license and no hunter education. Charges and restitution pending.

ELVA JO LEWIS SMITH Elva Jo Lewis Smith was born on October 14, 1938 to the late Hollis E. Lewis and Elva Naomi Neal Lewis Mahler in Durant, Oklahoma. She passed away peacefully at Pikes Peak Hospice at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado on January 9, 2021. Elva Jo was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 59 years, Rollin C. Smith.

While still young, Elva Jo moved with her family from Oklahoma to Richmond, California, where she graduated from Richmond High School.

She met Rollin C. Smith while in high school, and they married a few years after graduation in 1959. She had a number of jobs, but she retired from Pacific Bell in California after working there many years.

She loved to sew, making many of her clothes in her young years, and enjoyed crafting and going on driving trips with her husband. She was known for creating beautiful flower gardens in her backyards. After retirement, she and Rollin moved to Bonham, Texas and later to Denison, Texas.

She was active in her church in California and also in Bonham, Texas at Living Word Church of God, serving at church functions, caring for church members, and giving so much of herself to the work of the Lord.

When her husband passed in 2018, she moved to Colorado Springs to be near family.

Elva Jo is survived by her sister Lynda L. Lewis McCaleb (husband Bruce McCaleb) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; niece Debra L. McCaleb Andre (husband Terence S. Andre) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nephew Jeffrey S. McCaleb (wife Renee McCaleb) of Livermore, California; Aunt Betty Lewis of Bonham, Texas; many cousins, and many great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM Saturday, January 16, 2021 at the Wise Funeral Home Chapel 219 W. Sam Rayburn Dr. Bonham, Texas. Pastor Eddy Prince officiated. Burial followed in the Albany Cemetery in Oklahoma. Pallbearers were Bruce McCaleb, Terence Andre, Zachary Andre, Jeff McCaleb, Justin McCaleb, Daniel McCaleb, Bruce Ivy and Glen Chesser.

GLENDA FAY LOWE Memorial services for Mr. Marvin Thomas Lamberson, age 77, of Bonham, were held at 2:00 PM Monday, January 18, 2021 at the Wise Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Lamberson passed away on January 10, 2021 in Wylie, Texas surrounded by his loved ones. Private family inurnment will follow at a later date at Fannin Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

He was born on December 2, 1943, Phoenix, Arizona, the son of Hugh Clyde Lamberson and Donileta “Donnie” Goodin. He married Hazel Joyce Durham in 1979 in Edhube, Texas and she preceded her in death on November 23, 2020. He attended schools in Edhube and Bonham and was a race car enthusiast, especially dirt track races and working in the automotive industry. He was employed at the O’Reilly Auto Parts in Bonham and he loved it there. He was an auto fan and enjoyed NASCAR races. He was preceded in death by sister, Linda Lamberson.

He is survived by his son, Stephen Oliver of Durant, Oklahoma; daughters, Lisa

WILLIAM EARL (BILL) NEYMAN Bill was born June 17, 1939, at home, in Bay, Arkansas to the late Hubert and Frances Lenore (Hardin) Neyman. He married Martha Scharlyn Butts on March 22, 1961.

Bill attended schools in Memphis and Ripley, Tennessee, and earned his Associates degree in Business Administration at Grayson County College.

He graduated from Grayson County College in 1991 and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a national junior college honor society.

Bill joined the Air Force on August 20,1956 and retired on September 1, 1977. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and served in the United States, Germany, Japan, and Turkey, retiring after a year on Shemya Island, Aleutian Islands.

After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked as a warehouseman for CDT Industrial Supply until his medically forced retirement in June 2001.

1/19/21 Bill served as a videographer for the Sherman Community Players for many years providing not only the theater with a library of plays, but also providing the Sherman Library with a copy of each play. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge with Wakkani Centennial #21, Wakkani, Japan, as his home lodge, a member of Fountain Valley OES #155, Fountain Colorado. In 1997 Bill was made an honorary member of Sherman B&PW. Bill also volunteered at Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham, TX for 13 years where he was awarded Volunteer of the Year in April 2018 with 2,891 volunteer hours. He was a lifetime member of the Chapter 973 Vietnam Veterans of America, Sherman, TX and a member of the First Baptist Church, Sherman.

Survivors include his son William E. Neyman, Jr. of LeFlore, OK, daughter Scharlyn R. Berner and husband Eddie of Tahlequah, OK; grandchildren, Amber Braden, husband Terry of Tahlequah, OK, Joshua Berner, wife Samantha of Tahlequah, OK, and Michelle Nix, husband Jerrod of Waldron, ARK, and 8 great-grandchildren; sisters Joan Powell of Neosho, MO, Velma Lawther and husband Chuck of Ohio, and sister-in-law Barbara Brown of Panama City, FL plus 3 nephews and 5 nieces. Family was very important to Bill and he supported them in all their endeavors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Martha Butts Neyman of 56 years, and 2 half-brothers.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 PM Saturday January 16 at First Baptist Church. Burial followed at West Hill Cemetery.

He enjoyed old cars and participating in a prison ministry. Dr. Hannah was a dentist for many years and was the owner and operator of his own Dental Office. He was preceded in death by his father.

Honey Grove- Nelda Jean (Newhouse) George age 77, of Farmersville, TX was born on September 18, 1943 in Honey Grove, TX to William “Ted” Everett and Maurine Marcella (Denison) Newhouse; and passed away on January 8, 2021 at Baylor Scott and White Heart Hospital in Plano.

Nelda Jean married Jimmie Gus George on August 16, 2002 in Garland TX. Nelda was a member of the First Baptist Church in Farmersville, TX. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Nelda will be dearly missed. There have been hundreds, if not thousands of employees who proudly claimed that they were members of the Garland Police Department. Nelda was one who was known to many and loved by1/19/21 all. She started in 1984 as a part-time communications operator. She worked on many shifts and in many roles until she was selected as the first secretary for the Tactical/Narcotics Unit in 1987. She herded those cats with alacrity for a full year before going back to her first love, Communications, where she worked as call taker, dispatcher and lead operator. Nelda could often be heard boisterously laughing in the background as another operator keyed-up. She loved her job. Nelda was often chosen to train newer operators in the high-stress environment.

While Communications is the universally known as the thankless unit, they are a tightknit group that always rallied around each other in general and Nelda specifically as her health waned, causing her to retire in 2000. She remained a part of the agency even in retirement. Her loss is sorely felt, and she will be sadly missed by her many police friends. Your shift is done sweet Nelda Jean. Unplug your headset, push back your chair, wrap your cord up and put it in your locker.

The next shift has arrived and will take it from here. The officers are safe, the citizens secure. It’s time to go home to your well-deserved reward. You made a difference, Nelda.

She is survived by husband, Jimmie George of Farmersville, TX; son Tim Glasson and wife Wendy of Rockwall, TX; grandchildren, Courtney and husband Donald Buss, Alexa Glasson and fiancé Julian Creel, and Cole Glasson; great grandchildren, Eli Jiminez and Cooper Buss.

Barbara Anita Orr, age 82 of Garland, TX was called home on January 8, 2021.

Anita was born in Honey Grove, TX on March 9, 1938 to Jesse Lee and Barbara Alice White. She married the love of her life, Robert Lee “Bob” Orr on May 14, 1955.

They were married for 63 years until his death in 2018. Bob and Anita attended Centerville Road Church of Christ in Garland, TX, where they had many lifelong friends.

Anita loved spending time with her family and friends. She had regular get-togethers with school friends until just a few years ago.

VIRGINIA L. ROBERTSON On January 9, 2021, Virginia L. Robertson passed away in Denison, Texas at the age of 88. She was a resident of Bonham, Texas.

Virginia was born May 21, 1932, in Antlers, Oklahoma to Addley and Faye (Everrett) Wilhite.

She graduated from Antlers High School in 1950. On March 5, 1955 she married James Robertson in Hugo, Oklahoma. They had three sons, Jimmy, Mark, and Jeff Robertson. Virginia worked as an administrative assistant until retirement. At that time, she became a companion caretaker until 2010. Upon her final retirement, she found her own companion and best friend, her dog, Toby, who she adored. Virginia valued being social and made friends everywhere she went. She was affectionately known as Meme to her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, as well as to a number of special friends. She had a green thumb and was an exceptional cook. It is believed she kept every recipe she ever found. She enjoyed reading and completing the crossword puzzle in the newspaper. She is remembered by her great-grandchildren for having a special cookie jar for them to enjoy their favorite cookies when they came to visit. Virginia leaves a legacy of being strong and independent.

She is proceeded in death by her parents, husband James; son, Jimmy; grandson Jimmy; sisters, Opal and Jewel; and brother, Morris, “Moose”.

She is survived by her son, Mark and wife, Christy; son Jeff; granddaughter Mandy and significant other, Aaron; grandson, Josh and wife, Ericka; and grandson, Jacob; greatgrandchildren, Haygen, Adley, and Washington; and her beloved Toby.

Graveside services were held Friday, January 15, 2021, at Fairview Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Mr. Robert Milton officiating.

Services were under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.

ELDON DOUGLAS FRANKLIN MARCH 7, 1944 – JANUARY 9, 2021

Eldon Douglas Franklin of Ladonia, Texas was born March 7, 1944 to Willard Eldon and Lora Aline Eudy Franklin in Greenville, Hunt County, Texas. He passed away January 9, 2021 at Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville from COVID-19.

Doug graduated from Fannindel High School in 1962, then studied physics and chemistry at East Texas State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree. He later earned his Master of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Texas A & M – Commerce.

He married Peggy Sue Owens August 27, 1965, and they raised two sons: Scott and Shaun. Doug was a devoted 1/19/21 husband and loyal and faithful man who tirelessly served his community. He was the mayor of Ladonia in the early 1970’s.

He was a member of the Fannindel School Board for many years and a past board president. He was also a co-owner and director of Farmers & Merchants State Bank of Ladonia. He was very active with the Chamber of Commerce, and was also the unofficial historian of Ladonia. He wrote a weekly column for the local newspaper for many years. He had an unmatched knowledge of the history of the area and the local schools, the old timers and the newcomers, the historical houses and who lived where, and the businesses that have come and gone. He loved Ladonia and was constantly seeking opportunities for the community to grow and thrive, now and into the future. For the last several years, his biggest project was helping to bring Lake Ralph Hall to Fannin County. Doug and mayor Leon Hurse spent countless hours promoting the lake project, and when it finally got underway, he spent several years working for the Upper Trinity Regional Water District arranging the land purchase contracts with landowners for the lake location. He retired from the Lake Ralph Hall project in 2019 but remained excited about seeing the lake become a reality.

Doug was a lifelong member and lay leader of the First United Methodist Church. When the original church building flooded and the congregation had to make the difficult decision to tear it down and rebuild, Doug was instrumental in supervising the removal and preservation of as many elements as possible of the historical building, which were then installed in the new building, most importantly the beautiful stained glass windows.

Doug spent the majority of his working career as a director of environmental quality at E-Systems in Greenville. He was also the founder and owner of Northeast Texas Wastewater Laboratories, which tested and verified that treated wastewater was safe to release back into the water supply. He taught science at Ennis High School and industrial technology at TAMUCommerce.

After his first retirement, he earned his real estate 1/19/21 license and worked at Century 21. He also became a Texas Master Naturalist. He spent many hours working on projects and events to promote the natural resources and natural areas in northeast Texas, and each year helped organize the annual Fossil Day event held in and near Ladonia.

Doug is survived by his wife Peggy of Ladonia; son Scott and wife Cynthia of Pecan Gap; son Shaun and wife Michelle of Greenville, Texas; and sister Janice and husband Kelly Connell of Pecan Gap. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren: Tyler, Katie, Christopher, Brendan, Lyndsey, Payton, Jace, Brinkley, Luke, and Andrea and two great-granddaughters, Kambrie and Fallon, as well as nephews Jeromy, Michael and Billy and nieces Kacey and Shelley. He was preceded in death by his parents and niece Elisa.

The funeral service was conducted by Jeromy Connell at 1:30 pm on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at the Fannindel High School football field on Mill Street. There was a private interment at Center Point Cemetery in Ladonia.

Pallbearers were Philip Burnett, Ed Pickard, Mike Duplechan, Cole Hoskison, Kerry Crews, Kris Crews, Alan Fields. and Johnny Crosby. Honorary pallbearers were Sid Davis, Wayne Bullock, Avos Stancil, Larry Joe Braley, Eddie Frey, Tom Wishard, Joe Albritton, David Duncan, Billy Carl Crews, Derrel Fitzgerald, Randy Fitzgerald, Robert Wayne Milton, Harvey Milton, Clint Norwood, Freddy Hulsey and Tommy Hulsey.

Bonham- Funeral services for JLee “Dickie” Pearson, of Bonham, TX were held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Bonham, TX. Bro. Wayne Lee officiated. Interment followed at Owens Chapel Cemetery in the Danner Community. Serving as pallbearers were Cody Gentry, Michael Lee, Justin Pearson, Adam Pearson, Matthew Lee, David Lee, David Schulte, and Colby Pearson.

JLee “Dickie” Pearson was born September 10, 1926 in Bonham, TX to Thomas Ezra and Lela (Culbreath) Pearson; and passed away at the age 94 on Monday, January 11, 2021 at the Universal Health Services Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Ft. Worth, TX. JLee was raised in Bonham growing up in the Danner Community. 1/19/21 He married Bonnie Jean (Echols) Pearson on September 8, 1951. JLee served honorably in the United States Army and was stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.

JLee was saved and baptized under the ministry of FC Lasater at the Bible Baptist Church in Grand Prairie. While living in Grand Prairie, he worked at LTV aeronautics and after a while was offered a job at Coever Industry in Dallas where he used his many talents in woodworking and store and bank fixtures. He was there 25 years until the business closed. He then went to work at Guaranteed Solid Services as well as Southwest Elevators and ESCO Elevators.

In 1965, he purchased land in Bonham and raised cattle and gardens. His plan was to retire there, and he did.

Mr. Pearson is survived by his children, Jleetia Lee and husband Wayne, Regina Schulte and husband David, Garry Pearson and wife Jennifer, and Craig Pearson, and sister, Yvonne Darwin. He has 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Echols Pearson, baby daughter, Karen Pearson, grandson, Bryan Lee, parents, Thomas Ezra and Lela Pearson, sisters, Mag Petty, Beaute Stevenson, Estelle Woodall, Louise Porter, and Peggy Huff, brothers, Claude Pearson, Bobby Pearson, Thomas Pearson, and Billy Pearson.

Bonham-Heaven gained an exceptionally fashionable woman, on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. Lois “Jean” Jones, age 90, passed away peacefully at Arabella Nursing Home in Athens, Texas.

Lois “Jean” (Womack) Hale Jones was born in Gordonville, TX on October 23, 1930 to John Palmer “J.P.” Womack and Letha Marie (Jacobs) Meek. In her early years she managed the R & R movie theater as well as the R & R Drive-in movie theater. It was not only her job for over 20 plus years, but it was also her biggest hobby.

In Dec of 1966, Jean married Frank Wilson Jones and they moved to Odessa in 1973. In the mid 80’s, Jean and Frank were co-owners of Bain Equipment Industrial Paint Company.

Jean like to dress and be stylish, she was always very well maintained and stunningly beautiful; like she could have just walked right off the show room floor. Jean enjoyed brush painting and dabbled in painting ceramics.

She is of the Baptist faith.

She leaves behind her son, Christopher Jones of DeLeon, TX; grandson, Michael Bruno and wife Sandy of Frankston, TX; granddaughters, Monica Holder and husband Ray of Bryan TX and Cynthia Brady and husband Braxton of Waco, TX; 9 great grandchildren; brothers, Bobby Dwain Womack of Kaufman, TX and Kenneth Womack and wife Shirley of Bonham, TX; sister Paula Smith of McKinney, TX; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

By Rich Hilliard ECTOR -- Graduation last spring took away most members of Class 1A Ector’s 2020 boys regional quarterfinalist basketball team.

It removed seniors who led the Eagles to their deepest postseason advance in the sport since doing likewise in 2017.

Only a heartbreaking 59-57 third-round loss at the buzzer to Graford stopped them from advancing even deeper into the 2020 postseason.

A rebuilding year would have seemed likely this season, considering the departures.

Instead, head coach Blake Ector senior Kyrin Beach Turner’s Ector team has just represents the lone veteran reloaded -- and made itself Eagle back from 2020’s regional a contender to repeat as the quarterfinalist basketball team.

The Eagles took another step toward making the first of those two happen -- their fourth title in the last five years -- on Jan. 8 via a 46-28 home win against district-rival Dodd City to improve to 4-0 in 23-1A. Senior Kyrin Beach, a firstteam all-district selection last season, equates the lone returning member from the senior-laden accomplished 2019-20 team.

Numerous jayvee players from last season have stepped into varsity roles, as Ector vies for a seventh-consecutive postseason.

Note: Ector (12-6, 5-0) also defeated Savoy, 75-40, on Jan. 12 in District 23-1A boys action. Kyrin Beach had 42 points -- half coming via seven 3-pointers.

By Rich Hilliard District play reached its midpoint for Fannin County girls basketball teams on Jan 12.

During 23-1A play -- and outside of it -- Class 1A Dodd City, a regional semifinalist in 2020 and state finalist the previous three years, has continued to roll this season.

The Lady Hornets won at 1A Blum, 70-15, in non-district action on Jan. 12 to improve to 15-0 over-

all.

Meanwhile, Ector again is vying for another postseason berth in 231A. Sam Rayburn reached the midpoint in third place in 14-2A, while Honey Grove remained within striking distance in the same district of another postseason berth.

In 11-3A, Leonard has also kept itself in position to make a secondhalf push for the playoffs with a 3-4 district record at the midpoint.

Walk-in registration dates set for FREE adult education classes Denison, Texas - Grayson College Adult Education and Literacy welcomes high school equivalency seekers and English language learners to register without an appointment for free, virtual classes on Friday, January 22 or Saturday, January 23 from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm.

Those interested in completing high school or advancing their English language skills can simply walk into the Advanced Technology building on Grayson College’s main campus in Denison to enroll.

Registration can be completed in most languages with Spanish-speaking staff immediately available to assist registrants.

Registering students should bring a government issued ID, wear a mask and have their social security number handy (the card itself is not required). Due to the assessments required for class placement, it can take up to several hours to complete the

registration process. Classes are currently being offered online, and there are a variety of class times available.

“A high school diploma and strong English language skills are critically important for entry into higher education and in turn economic prosperity” Adult Education and Literacy Director Ashley Trevino said. “By 2030, at least 60 percent of the jobs in Texas will require some level of higher education according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.”

Workers’ earnings are directly tied to educational attainment and have a strong correlation to quality of life. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that those with a high school diploma earn an average of $600 more per month than those who haven’t completed high school. Over a lifetime, that earnings gap expands to hundreds of thousands of dollars. As reported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Center on Society

and Health, higher levels of education lead to higher levels of home ownership, health insurance coverage, family literacy, physical activity and better nutrition.

Higher community education levels are also linked to lower crime rates and lower rates of pollution.
