4. Discussion, consideration and action regarding changes and/or modifications requested by landowners; A. Change in Zoning application; from Rural Estate, Single Family District to R&C, Retail and Commercial District – Dale Smith: Fannin County Development Service Director Di Hopkins stated the application paperwork that was turned in by Dale Smith was in order. Mr. Smith is requesting the zoning change to accommodate his goal to develop a RV Park. Member Gilbert Welch questioned whether the adjoining landowners were notified of Mr. Smith’s intent. A discussion ensued regarding how the landowners might view these plans and the process involved in notifying landowners. The question also came up, of what is the definition of a “RV”, with the intent to differentiate between temporary recreational use and a more permanent type lodging.

On January 1, 2021, the Swearing-In Ceremony for the recently Elected and Appointed Officials in Fannin County was held at the MultiPurpose Complex at 9:00 a.m. in Bonham, Tx. After the pledge of allegiance to the United States of America, the ceremony began with the administering of the Oath of Office to Lauri Blake, Judge of the 336th District Court, by County Judge Randy Moore.

After swearing to uphold the duties of the Office of Judge 336th Judicial District Court of Fannin County and the laws of the United States and Texas, Judge Blake swore in: Richard Glaser, Criminal District Attorney; Edwina Lane, County Commissioner Precinct 1;

Jerry Magness, County Commissioner, Precinct 3; Jimmy Helms, Constable Pct. 2; Kevin Mayberry, Constable Pct. 3 and Tammy Biggar, who was appointed by Governor Abbott to serve on the TCDRS Board of Trustees.

Before swearing-in Mark Johnson-Fannin County Sheriff, County Judge Randy Moore, using the Bible his mother had given him, shared a scripture that had inspired Judge Moore through his life.

Sheriff Johnson’s daughter was on hand to make the occasion more memorable for him by pinning his badge on his uniform.

County Court at Law Judge Charles Butler had been on

hand to administer the Oath of Office to Paul Holt, Constable Pct. 2, but due to illness, plans were made to accommodate Mr. Holt at his home.

Holding significant importance during the ceremony, was, that this is the fifth term of service in their respective offices for Judge Blake and District Attorney Richard Glaser as they were both initially elected in 2004.

Holding historical significance, District Judge Blake, the first woman elected to the office of District Judge in Fannin County, administered the Oath of Office to Commissioner Edwina Lane, the first woman elected to be a Fannin County Commissioner.

All in all, with historical firsts and supportive family members to cheer on their loved ones, the 2021 Fannin County Swearing-In Ceremony served to start the New Year off on a positive note for Fannin County.

LAODICEA – THE PURPOSELESS CHURCH

JESUS TO THE CHURCH IN LAODICEA - Revelation 3:1422 [BSB]. “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Originator of God’s creation. I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm— neither hot nor cold—I am about to vomit you out of My mouth! You say, ‘I am rich; I have grown wealthy and need nothing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, white garments so that you may be clothed and your shameful nakedness not exposed, and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. Those I love, I rebuke and discipline. Therefore, be earnest and repent.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and dine with him, and he with Me. To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right to sit with Me on My throne, just as I overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Laodicea was the last of seven churches in Turkey to whom Jesus wrote a letter penned by John at the writing of Revelation.

These are Jesus’ words to the churches of believers just prior to God’s judgment that will come on the entire world at the end of days and just prior to His return. Although we know that Laodicea was an actual church assembly during the time John wrote Revelation in approximately 90 AD, we also know that the Message to Jesus’ Church of believers is timeless and the same to all those who claim His Name. Most Christians know about the Laodiceans and are provoked by this letter to “get it right” before Jesus returns. There have been countless summaries written and sermons preached on the Laodicean church. Many suggest that the state of the Laodicean Church in the 90’s AD prophesies the state of the Christian Church just prior to Jesus’ return. Whether this is the case or not, it cannot be denied that Jesus warning is for all those who have spiritual ears that can hear the Holy Spirit as He speaks to all churches and believers.

Laodicea was a wealthy community.

Their economy was booming and their fiscal leadership was impeccable.

Devastated by an earthquake in the 1st Century AD, they were able to tell their Federal Government (Rome) that they would rebuild their city without their aid, and they did. They were a proud people that worked together to accomplish their goals. They had accumulated quite a nest egg; This church met regularly, had a substantial treasury, and probably gave liberally to local programs which permitted them a position of influence in the community. I think they must have been surprised by Jesus’ assessment of their church goals and accomplishments. “I KNOW YOUR WORKS. THEY ARE NOT HOT OR COLD. I WISH THEY WERE ONE OR THE OTHER, BUT BECAUSE YOU ARE LUKEWARM, I AM ABOUT TO SPEW YOU OUT OF MY MOUTH.” Laodicea well understood Jesus’ reference. They were a city that had no local water supply. They brought in their water through a sophisticated aqueduct and clay pipe system. The water that entered the city was from hot springs and cold springs that, when mixed, created a rather putrid lukewarm mixture that was heavily charged with calcareous matter from its travel through the clay pipe system. It was to this that Jesus compared the works of the Laodicean church. Jesus knew this church very well for He knew their thoughts, “FOR YOU SAY, I AM RICH, I HAVE MADE MYSELF WEALTHY, AND I NEED NOTHING.” According to Jesus’ words, this earthly wealth defined the church’s only claim to fame. But the Laodicean church did not know Jesus’ thoughts. “BUT YOU DO NOT KNOW THAT YOU ARE MISERABLE, POOR, BLIND AND NAKED – TO BE PITIED.” Why didn’t they know? They bore the name of The Church of Jesus Christ in Laodicea! From this scripture it is obvious they did not know the One whose name they bore, for He was locked outside the church. “LOOK, I AM STANDING AT THE DOOR AND KNOCKING. IF ANYONE HEARS MY VOICE, AND OPENS THE DOOR, I WILL COME INTO HIM AND DINE WITH HIM, AND HE WITH ME.” Jesus wants an intimate relationship with His own that forsakes all others. “BUY FROM ME GOLD REFINED BY THE FIRE.” What did Jesus mean by this statement? In Matthew 19:1630, Jesus spoke to a young man of great privilege (much like the church at Laodicea). This man led a good life; he believed in God and kept His commandments, but he had one nagging question. “What must I do to have eternal life?” To this, Jesus responded, “Give up all you have and come follow Me.” (vs 21) The young man went away sad because he was very wealthy. He was not willing to part with his wealth, position, or control. To forsake ourselves and give our lives to Jesus means that we give up all control. Did Laodicea heed Jesus’ warning? I don’t know, but History tells us that a massive earthquake hit Laodicea in 600 AD from which it never recovered. Only ruins remain today, most of which are ruins of the infamous water system that carried the putrid water. The letters recorded in Revelation, written by Jesus Christ to HIS Church, have survived 2000 years and are as timely for the Body of Believers in Jesus Christ today as it was then. WHAT IS OUR PURPOSE and WHAT ARE OUR METHODS? The Church of Jesus Christ has only one Purpose. To become an integral part of Jesus Christ’s Body on this earth from whom our life flows, to have an intimate relationship with Him, forsake all others, and deliver His Message of Salvation in Him alone to a dying world, by the same Power that raised Him from the dead.

The Message, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12. Perhaps we, the Church, need a redefinition of our purpose according to His Will.

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to trust in the One He has sent.” John 6:29

By Jeff Hunt Most folks, particularly anyone who has ever served in the US Armed Forces, are familiar with the concept of a “situation report” or “SITREP” for short. SITREPs are short, honest summaries of facts and circumstances that report a military unit’s ability to do its job.

SITREPS are put together by unit commanders around the world every day and transmitted to superiors up the chain of command to enable decisionmakers to judge the preparedness of the US Armed Forces to carry out assigned missions at a specific time and place.

Over time, accumulated SITREPS allow senior commanders to learn of issues or problems so that they can address them with some combination of leadership, people, training and resources. Ultimately, SITREPS enable good decisions so that the US Armed Forces can carry out our long-term national defense strategy.

SITREPS are also called for in fast moving, special situations like combat, emergencies or natural disasters. Such was the case when then Colonel Chesty Puller bluntly assessed and reported the situation his Marines faced on the banks of the Chosin Reservoir in Korea. In these time critical situations, leaders must quickly report the status of their units so that superiors can decide how to respond with resources on hand to accomplish a specific mission or stave off potential disaster.

After two decades in uniform, daily and special SITREPs were ingrained as a part of my life as a US Navy officer.

SITREPs, or some version of them, are also used by civilian law enforcement, fire districts and other government entities at all levels ranging from water treatment departments to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to report their organization’s readiness to do its job. Like military commanders, leaders in these “first responder” organizations also need to know the status of their units and personnel at all times.

I think it’s time for some Fannin County SITREPs.

As of January 2021, over 35,000 people live and work in Fannin County, Texas. Like the members of my family, over 2,500 new people came to Fannin County in the last decade.

The explosion of growth in nearby Collin and Denton counties, as well as the creation of Bois d’Arc Lake and Lake Ralph Hall in Fannin County will undoubtedly attract other newcomers and cause our county to grow even faster in coming years.

Are Fannin County’s government, education, justice, social services and other organizations ready to execute their important missions to serve the needs of the people who live here and those that will surely come? Does Fannin County have a viable, coordinated long-term strategy for infrastructure including roads, water distribution, development, education, environmental planning, information technology and waste disposal? What about law enforcement and the court system in Fannin County?

How will Fannin County pay for the planning and services that it will need in coming years? What will drive and shape the economy here in Fannin County? How will Fannin County protect some of its most vulnerable residents including children and the elderly? What is the current and desired condition for medical services in the county? How does Fannin County stack up in each of these categories against our neighbors in Collin, Grayson, Lamar and Hunt Counties?

Over coming months, the Fannin County SITREP will look at these subjects (and others that I hope you will suggest) in an open and honest way. Together, we’ll take a top to bottom tour of Fannin County and assess its readiness to carry out its many essential missions both now and in the future. It’s my hope that through this process, we as residents of Fannin County can become better informed and more capable of making decisions that will help our county prepare for a future that is just around the corner.

Commissioners Court: A New Face 10/9/12 at Court, 04/28/20 Somber Covid-19 Numbers/Courthouse Floorplans Progress

By Rose Schwartz County Judge Randy Moore presided over the first regular meeting of the Commissioners Court for the New Year, Tuesday 5, 2021. He called the court to order at 9:00 a.m. and began by expressing his hope that everyone had a good holiday season and his belief that good things are ahead for Fannin County. He noted that Quorum was Established as all Commissioners, along with himself, were present.

David Woodson introduced County Clerk Tammy Biggar to lead the Invocation.

Pledges were led by Major James Manis.

Introductions: Judge Moore noted that the only person needing to be introduced in today’s meeting was the newly elected Commissioner Edwina Lane.

He welcomed her to the court and asked all Commissioners to get together at meeting’s end to take a picture together along with himself as he felt it would be an appropriate way for the Commissioners Court to start off the New Year.

5. Public Forum: First to speak in Public Forum was Mark Pendergraf with AKE Safety Equipment. He had asked to speak to inform the court about his company’s product that he asserts can save farmers, ranchers and big equipment operators

thousands of dollars over a lifetime. He offered to host a demonstration after the meeting of his liquid gas fire extinguisher that he stated was multi-shot, re-usable and came with a lifetime guarantee.

Molly Hayes from the Tulip Community was next to speak.

She started with wishing the Judge a Happy Birthday and congratulating Commissioner Lane. She then explained she came on behalf of her community to re-emphasize the need for a TX DOT Regulated Stop Sign to be placed on CR 2037 where it dead-ends at CR 2038.

She had voiced her concerns and requests during a previous visit to the court in December.

Since then, she said, a local person “slopped up” a t-post with a small stop sign that is inadequate due to its height, size and quality. She explained that she and the community request a TX DOT approved Stop Sign on a post set in cement and placed at TX DOT level to be put up. She also requests the speed limit on CR 2037 and CR 2038 decreased to 30 MPH due to those roads having become high traffic areas from commercial vehicles. She emphasized these requests are to ensure safety for the residents of her community.

ter Proclamation for Covid-19: County Judge Randy Moore began with Covid-19 stats as of 3:30 p.m. Monday 4, 2021. At that time there were 1,605 confirmed cases and 276 probable cases that brings the total to 1,881 cases in Fannin County.

Of those, 99 are active, 1,745 recovered and there have been 53 fatalities. He went on to say the hospitalization rate has risen to 24.65%. Administrators from the region’s hospitals have been in contact with him and want citizens to know the seriousness of the problem with most of them being filled to their capacity and some unable to take new patients. Judge Moore said we all need to do as much as we can to reduce the numbers of hospitalizations.

He reminded all how seriously ill some can become from Covid-19 and stressed caution from all. Judge Moore also commended the work Troy Hudson has been doing with testing.

Upcoming dates for free testing: Bonham – Jan. 11 thru 13; Honey Grove – Jan. 21 thru 23; Leonard – Jan. 25 & 26. Testing will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on those dates.

County Judge Randy Moore then spoke of the two stages of administering the vaccine.

The first stage was Phase 1-A that was only for hospital staff, nurses, doctors, nursing homes and 911 responders. The second stage we are currently in is Phase 1-B which includes some 911 responders and those 65 and older with other medical conditions. Vaccines have been dispensed recently from TMC Bonham, Brookshires and Puckett Clinic in Honey Grove.

Judge Moore stated TMC Bonham and Brookshires will have a small amount of vaccines the second week of January. To obtain a vaccine he recommends you call ahead to get your name on a list. He warned citizens

These scams involve being asked to pay “out of pocket” for the vaccine or pay to put your name on a vaccine waiting list as well as paying to get early access to the vaccine. People should beware of advertising for vaccines on social media platforms, e-mails, telephone calls, online or from unsolicited unknown sources. The DSHS website cautions the public of marketers offering to sale or ship doses of the vaccine for payment and advises the public to not give out personal information to unknown sources.

Judge Moore encourages any who wish to know more to visit the DSHS website. Motion was made, seconded and passed to extend Proclamation for one more week.

7. Discussion, consideration and action regarding the Covid-19 Response and Continuity of Operations Plan for Fannin County: County Judge Randy Moore said he did not see any need to change the plan but asked if any saw a need to make changes. Commissioner Lackey responded, that in light of the rise in hospitalizations, his knowing of 27 people who currently have Covid-19 and the danger of their not being hospital space should other medical problems arise, he believes Commissioner Court should not be held in person at this time. After a lengthy discussion involving the problem of hospital room availability, it was mutually agreed that Commissioner Lackey’s suggestion was a good idea. Judge Moore said he would be looking into holding the court on-line with everyone else being on call-in, on zoom. He also said due to some county people having tested positive for Covid-19, there will be some county offices shutting down as well. Motion was made, seconded and passed to extend the Operations Plan for one more week with Judge Moore adding that he would notify the media when a decision is made how court will be handled next week.

8. Discussion and update regarding Courthouse Restoration: County Judge Randy Moore read the update on the Exterior: roof trusses are being installed on the west side, the east side install is complete, and once west side is complete, remaining in-fill pieces and braces will be installed with sky track fork lift. Mason work: continue to work on windows with stone repair. Mechanical: welding, chilled water piping to connect the chiller to the inside air handling units in the mechanical yard. Interior: installing conduit in the stone walls on second and third level, running duct work to the third level. Mill Work: blocking on second and third levels. Judge Moore also discussed the need to get a committee together to organize the dedication ceremony set to occur October 5, 2021.

Letter to the Editor

I have told you over and over these past four years that Donald Trump is not a Republican. He is not a Democrat. He is an Opportunist! He does not adhere to any traditional Republican values. He does not adhere to any traditional Democratic values either. Let’s face it; he has no values of which we are aware.

That being said, I am at a loss as to why the Republican Party is being called and acting like the party of Trump. Have you all abandoned your Republican principles and decided that Opportunism is the way forward? I will put it to you that that philosophy is short-sighted. It will not work in the long term.

Politicians like our own dear Ted Cruz have proved themselves to be cowards and lickspittles from the time he bent his knee to the man who denigrated his wife and defamed his father. How many of us actually admire Ted Cruz’s lack of spine? Count me out on

that one.

I’ve been a Democrat all my voting life. I have not usually agreed with Republicans, but could see that they were taking traditional Republican positions, and as such were deserving of respect. Get yourselves together guys. Get a party platform again.

Press Release - COVID-19 cases continue to increase in our county, and so are the number of patients in our hospitals.

Currently, our ICU beds are full and more than 40% of all ICU beds are filled with COVID-19 patients. Our Emergency Departments are overflowing with many patients waiting for care and rooms.

As hospital capacity continues to be stretched to the maximum, we need your help to ensure there is a bed available for your next emergency.

This virus is rampant in our community. Our elderly, those with preexisting conditions, and even some otherwise healthy people are requiring significant hospital intervention. The care of those with COVID-19 is in addition to our “nor-

service project started 22 years ago with the idea and energy of one young 4-H girl and has continued and grown since.

The challenges of the past year made even more crucial that the Spirit of Giving should continue. Instead of the usual sit-down Christmas Meal with music and camaraderie, meals were handed out at four locations: Family Life Center in Bonham, Old National Guard Armory in Honey Grove, City Park Pavilion in Leonard, and Trenton City Park in Trenton.

Other meals were delivered to the homes of the homebound and stations of First Responders who were on duty Christmas Day. Because of the pandemic, care was taken that all volunteers were masked, gloved, temperature checked, hands washed frequently, and spread out. Extra care was taken that fewer volunteers worked to prepare the food and that volunteers who worked in “tighter” spaces were the same household. On Christmas Day, an amazing group of volun-

What does it take? Several months of planning, core of hard-working volunteers, a supportive community, and amazing support from local businesses are key to the success of Christmas Day Dinner project. This year, for the first time, a web page was created to register those who wanted meals and to register volunteers to help at the various stages of preparation. The web page allowed team leaders to easily organize deliveries and groups of volunteers. Of course, it also took 20 fourteenpound turkeys, 125 pounds of ham, 5 cases of sweet potatoes, 5 cases of green beans, 3 pounds of bacon, 5 pounds of onions, 12 pounds celery, 2 cases of potato flakes, 6 cases of chicken broth, 3 gallons of milk, 8 pounds of butter, 12 pounds of brown sugar, 10

pounds of flour and cornmeal for cornbread dressing, 2 cases cranberry sauce, and enough brownies, cookies, and cake for 400 servings. Financial support came from many donors.

Special thanks to local businesses, in particular Clayton Homes Manufacturing, Glasser Family Charitable Foundation, Constantine Lodge #13, Bonham Vet Clinic, Cole Title Company, Honey Grove Veterinary Clinic, Hope Concrete Company, McCraw Oil Company, Warrior Tire, and Wise Funeral Home. The city of Ladonia has received a HOME Program Contract # RSP 2020-0033 from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) Housing Rehabilitation Assistance (HRA).

Housing Rehabilitation Assistance (HRA) is for the reconstruction of single-family homes for low to moderate income homeowners. This time of year is always tough for horse owners because as it gets cold, all of the pests start moving into warmer environments. For most people, it means finding mice in their home. However, for we horse owners, it usually means they have moved into our barns, feed rooms, and hay supplies.

And while we know they can carry disease, we don’t always know what, nor do we know what is safe to use to get rid of them. So here are the diseases to watch for, and ways to get rid of the little pests before they can cause a problem.

Mice/Rats: Rodents themselves can actually be a nuisance to your horses as well as you. Mice will actually chew on coronary bands and hoof walls if there is no food source available.

Fleas- while not necessarily a problem for your horses, mice and rats harbor fleas. Since most horse owners also have cats and dogs, fleas can mean a huge problem with itchy animals. Not to mention that it’s never good to have extra insects around.

Tapeworms- along with the fleas come tapeworms. Fleas are the main host for tapeworm eggs, which means that if you find the little white worms that look like rice granules, you’ve got fleas. Tapeworms are a problem in that they can cause issues with malnutrition as they take nutrients from the host they are living in. Not to mention they can be a cause of colic, especially in foals.

Salmonella- We’re all familiar with this one. Mice and rats are good at carrying this bacteria from one host to another.

While one horse may have Salmonella and not show any symptoms, other horses may get explosive, watery diarrhea with a high fever. This diarrhea is life threatening as it causes sepsis in horses very quickly.

Not only this, but Salmonella is also very problematic for people as it can make them very sick as well.

ticular bacteria. Living in stagnant water, mice and rats are good at carrying it between stagnant water sources, where horses pick it up from eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water. In horses, the most common thing we see in adult horses is uveitis, or inflammation within the eye. It can also cause problems with foaling.

Opossum Equine Protozoal Myelitis (EPM)- Possums are the main host for Sarcocystis neuron/ hughesi, which horses pick up from opossum feces. From there, it invades the muscle, causing muscle atrophy, and then gets into the brain and brainstem, where it causes neuron loss and swelling. This leads to neurologic symptoms we see, mainly ataxia, or the drunken stumbles. And once your horse has damage from the parasite, there is always a chance that the symptoms can come back.

Raccoons and skunks: while not able to carry specific diseases to your horses, these guys wreak havoc in a feed room. They love to open feed bins and cause destruction wherever they go. Plus they can carry fleas as well. Not to mention the smell the skunks leave behind!

Prevention: Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Clean your feed room: Be sure to clean up any spilled feed as this is a ready food source for pests.

Metal feed bins: make sure all feed is stored in metal feed bins. Determined mice and rats can chew through plastic feed bins, and can easily decimate a feed sack.

Live Traps: these come in many forms, and allow for trapping and releasing rodents far away from your barn.

Pest companies: a lot of us don’t think about pest companies for rodents, we thing about them for insects. But if they are made aware of a rodent problem, they can use specific baits that are less toxic to your pet if it eats the rodent.

And don’t forget the cats!

Finding a good mouser is sometimes the best thing to keep rodents out of the barn.

Oftentimes, the smell of a predator will keep rodents away.

Remember, using a multimodal approach to pest control is best. Just keeping the feed room clean and rodent-proof doesn’t mean they won’t come around. Getting rid of pests from your barn altogether is best. As stated before, mice and rats will chew on coronary bands and hooves if there is no food source readily available.

If this is happening, you’ll notice little sideways teeth marks on the hoof wall.

Hopefully you’re already implementing some of these pest control measures in your barns. Nobody likes a pest, so let’s keep them at bay and keep our horses happy and healthy.

MELISSA LYNN PERKINS Melissa Lynn Perkins of Savoy, Texas passed away at her home on January 2, 2021, with family by her side, at the age of 59.

She was born on February 21, 1961 in Jacksonville, Arkansas to Glen G. and Nettie Sue Anderson Hair. She attended Colbert, Oklahoma schools and was a graduate of Colbert High School. She married Steve Perkins on October 14, 1988 in

Sherman, Texas.

She owned and operated the very popular Perk’s Barbeque Stand in Savoy for many years, until health issues forced her to retire.

She is survived by her husband, Steve Perkins; brothers, James Hair and wife Cheryl, and Charles Hair all of Colbert. She is also survived by three step children, who she loved as her own. Angela Land and husband Shawn, Stevey and his fiancé Whitney, Krystal and husband Jared. Her mother-in-law, Sue Perkins; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn G. and Nettie Sue Anderson Hair; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Hair; two brothers, Stephen Glen and Randy Brent Hair; her father-inlaw, Bob Perkins.

Honey Grove- Funeral services for Cleta Faye Ritchson, age 84, of Sulphur Springs, TX were held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Honey Grove, TX. Rev. Terry Wheless officiated.

Interment followed at Dodd City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Grant Partridge, Shane Martin, Kristen Tan, Christopher Ritchson, Wesley Ritchson, and Raymond Wheless. Honorary pallbearers were Tommy Alexander, Angela Wheless, Cody Ritchson and Ryan Ritchson.

Cleta Faye (Springer) Ritchson was born on November 2, 1936 in Honey Grove, TX to John Monroe and Vera Bell (Woodard) Springer and passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2021 in Sulphur Springs, TX. She attended Honey Grove School and Grayson County College. Faye married Grady Eugene Ritchson on April 30, 1951 in Honey Grove, TX. Grady was the love of her life for 61 years until he preceded her in death on November 11, 2012.

She is also preceded in death by her mother and father, Vera Bell and John Monroe Springer, and infant daughter, Marilyn Marie.

Faye was a loving mother, and grandmother, she is survived by 7 children, Vera Elizabeth Donagun of Sherman, Gracie Faye Davis and husband Harmon of Sulphur Springs, Cathryn Jeanette “Cathy” Sides and husband Dale of Winnsboro, Amy Lou McIntyre of Sulphur Springs, Loyd Eugene Ritchson and husband Brad of Dallas, Grady Leon Ritchson

and wife Shelly of Moyers, and Elton Lewis Ritchson of Antlers: 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.

Faye is best known as a prayer warrior and the Queen Bee. She took her role of family matriarch seriously. She loved taking pictures, traveling and flower gardening. Faye loved to cook and celebrate all holidays. This strong will, feisty little woman will be greatly missed by all.

Mr. James passed away at his residence in Bonham, Texas on January 2, 2021.

Henry was born on August 22, 1939 in Honey Grove, Texas, the son of Henry James, Sr., and Harvey Nella “Bay” Wren. He was a graduate of Honey Grove High School and later served in the United States Army in Korea as a S&S Missile operator called the “Honest John”.

He later worked for DeRose Industries from 1965 till

closing and for Super Sack for eleven months and then as a Dietician for the Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center for 14 years. He was a member of the Northside Church of Christ in Bonham, Texas and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was preceded in death by his former spouses, Barbara Pevey and Nell Busby.

He is survived by his daughter, Elaine Wilson of Bonham, cousin by marriage, Rachel Phillips, and grandchildren, KJ Nelson and wife Tasha and their three children, Kamden, Kenna and Kingston; Andrew Nelson and wife Camille and their two children, Arianna and Cassius, Mariah Nelson, Aisha Jones and son Jaylon, Kelisha Champion and children, Kayla and Kason, his little buddy Gizmo and extended family and a host of friends.

Billie went to be with her Savior Monday morning, January 4, 2021 at Paris Regional Medical Center in Paris, Texas.

Billie was born on October 14, 1930 in Munday, Texas, the youngest daughter of Robert Stephen Langford and Cora May Sullivan Langford. She graduated from Anson High School in 1948 and went on to marry her sweetheart, Don James West on February 14, 1951. They were married 34 years before his passing on January 9, 1986.

Billie was a true Texan, through and through. She adored her little piece of Texas, her farm in Allen.

She enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader; you would almost never catch her without a book by her side. Billie loved her family and friends, and she was always lending a helping hand to anyone who needed it. She also loved to joke and pull pranks, and a few lucky friends and family received her “infamous” singing happy birthday gram in costume. Most of all, Billie loved the Lord. She was a devout Christian who taught Sunday school, lead many Bible studies, and traveled on a mission trip to spread the Gospel. She spent many years volunteering with the Write-Way Prison Ministry which brought her much joy and purpose.

This was a cause dear to her heart. Memories of her acts of kindness and willingness to help others will live on in those who knew her. Billie is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Garland Langford and Arnold Langford, and sister, Lois Phillips.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna West of Bonham, Texas, granddaughter, Jaime Mulder of Dallas, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Her service was held at Wise Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Burial was at Gates Hill Cemetery in Bonham, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Daisy Ryan, her Husband L. E. McIntyre, brother Alvis Ryan Sr. and sister Bernice Ryan Foster.

Myrtle graduated from Washington High School in Bonham, Texas. After High School she received an undergraduate degree from Bishop College in Marshall Texas.

She continued post graduate studies at The University of Colorado and Texas A& M University at Commerce.

Mrs. Mac, as she was so often referred to is a longtime member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and actively served in various auxiliaries and held leadership positions: Director of Christian Education, President of the Ushers, Teacher of the Women’s Bible Class in Sunday School, Deaconess, and The Women’s Mission Society to name a few. She loved prayer meeting and Bible Study and had a passion for teaching Bible lessons. She was faithful in attendance until March of 2020 when because of the Pandemic she could no longer leave the building. She was blessed to be able to worship virtually with her congregation and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Church honored her with special recognition on several occasions for dedicated service.

Myrtle had a long and distinguished teaching career in three Independent School Districts: Honey Grove, Lufkin, and Bonham Texas where she Retired.

She was a member of the Texas and National Teachers Associations, Delta Kappa Gamma and several Boards and committees of the City and County. The Texoma Council of Government awarded her Citizen of the Year for her service to the community. She served over 20 years as a volunteer with the Red River Hospital Auxiliary.

RICHARD SHUFORD NICHOLS

Richard Shuford Nichols, age 68, of Howard, Ohio and formerly of Yantis, Texas, passed away on Friday, December 25, 2020 at his home.

He was born on June 21, 1952 in Dallas, Texas to John and Alta (Harden) Nichols.

Richard worked for Southwestern Bell for over 33 years and for the Lands End Fire Department in Yantis, Texas for over 11 years where he served as Fire Chief. He was a member of the Lake Fork Baptist Church where he served as Head of Maintenance. Richard also was a member of the Flora Masonic Lodge #119 in Quitman, Texas.

He enjoyed hunting, volunteering, and helping whoever was in need. But most of all, Richard loved the time he spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife Carleen (Flores) Nichols; his father, John Nichols; his children Jason (Stephanie) Nichols, Vanessa (Bill) Young, Robert Ash (Tressie) Nichols; nine grandchildren; and two brothers, Jackey (Dottie) Nichols and Chris (Kris Guerra) Nichols.

Richard was preceded in death by his mother Alta Nichols.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Lake Fork Baptist Church in Alba, Texas, (9483 FM 515, Alba, TX 75410), beginning at 11AM with Mr. Danny Meeks officiating.

WALTER DON BROWN

Honey Grove-Funeral services for Walter Don Brown, age 72, of Honey Grove, TX were held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, January 3, 2021 at the Honey Grove First Baptist Church. Rev. Terry Paul Cunningham and Rev. Jerry Don Childers officiated. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery.

Walter Don Brown was born in Sherman, TX on July 5, 1948 to Curtis Wilford and Sybil Wanda Brown; and passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at Paris Regional Medical Center.

He married Linda Kaye (McCraw) Brown on October 7, 1968 in Greenville, TX. Walter had been involved in the Honey Grove Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Honey Grove Masonic Lodge # 164.

He was also active in the Honey Grove Rodeo Club for many years. He was the owner operator at the Brown Feed and Grain and Brown Trucking Company after his parents passed away. Walter was a farmer and a rancher. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend. Walter loved drag racing, boating, and camping.

GLENNA LANGFORD

Glenna Langford, 89, crossed over from this earthly life to her eternal home on Wednesday, December 30, 2020.

Her time 1/12/21 with us was focused on serving her Lord and Savior by serving others. Whether in her 4th grade classroom, her home, around a Sunday school table, or in the community, she was always looking for ways to do “one more thing” for someone else. She taught this lifestyle to her children and grandchildren by having them help prepare Bible lessons, cook meals for others and deliver food to those she was serving. Her living legacy will continue through her family and friends.

Glenna Annice Hunt Langford was born to Raymond and Mollie Herring Hunt on February 1, 1931 in Knippa, TX. She was the oldest of five children. The family made their home in Garwood, Texas and started their rice farming business. Glenna graduated from Garwood High School in 1948 then went to Abilene Christian College. She graduated from ACC, now ACU, in 1952 shortly after meeting Otto Langford.

They were married later that year and enjoyed 21 wonderful years until his death in 1973. Glenna later earned her master’s degree from East Texas State University in 1979.

Teaching was Glenna’s chosen profession. She taught in El Campo, Texas from 1952 until 1959 when she and Otto moved to Fannin County. She took time off to start a family and then taught in Bonham from 1966 until she retired in 1990. She was recognized by her peers for her skills in the classroom by being awarded the Fannin County Teacher of the Year in 1981. Glenna loved her 4th grade students and enjoyed sharing memories with them until her last days.

Glenna also enjoyed cooking, sewing, and crocheting. She made numerous afghans for family and friends. She also enjoyed sharing a meal she prepared with others. Glenna was very active in her church home, Northside Church of Christ.

Family was a blessing Glenna deeply appreciated. She always enjoyed each minute with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Rules were pretty relaxed at “Gena’s” house and the M&M jar was always full and ready for her kids. For many years Sunday meals were at Gena’s and if you wanted to bring a friend, there was always plenty.

In addition to her parents and husband, Glenna was also preceded in death by her longtime friend, Aubrey Conley; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley, and Alton Smith; brother, Dale Hunt;

brother-in-law, James Wesson; nephew, Clayton Smith and greatnephew, Jed Martin.

Her legacy of service lives on in her children, Lawton Langford and wife Jodie, Laurie Langford Bryan and husband JD, and Michele Conley Smith. She is survived by beloved grandchildren, Alyssa and fiancé Dalton Whitley, Andrew, Lexi, Christopher, Wade, Shannon and husband Jackie Thomas, Jennifer and husband Colt Compton, her precious great grandchildren, Grady, Conley, Lane, Aubrey, and Leddy. She also leaves her sister, Janet Wesson; brother and sister-inlaw, Bobby, and Jean Hunt; sisterin-law, Shirley Hunt and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and their families.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at 1:00 at the Northside Church of Christ in Bonham. Pallbearers were Jim Bono, Kevin Dennis, Bobby Ross, Ricky Amlin, Clifford Shaw, and Randy Andrews. Honorary pallbearers were Don Manhart, Kelly Kemp, and Steve Mohundro.

Williams and Gwenoth Dean (Eskue) Mitchell. She was a very loving and outgoing child.

Gwen liked everything Elvis and had numerous Elvis mementos; she loved the color purple and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bonham, TX. NAOMI LEE (TRAPP) BOLIN

Joseph E. Darling passed away on January 1, 2021 after a long, hard-fought battle with congestive heart failure. Joe or Papa Joe as he was affectionately called by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, was born in Oil City, PA on April 10, 1937 to Melissa and Alfred Darling.

He grew up on a farm in a small rural Pennsylvania town and had countless fun and mischievous “escapades” with his sisters, stepbrother and friends. Oh, the stories he would tell about hunting, fishing, and practical joke playing.

Joe began his career as a production supervisor at Elwin G. Smith Co in Pittsburgh, PA. He continued his entire career in the coil coating industry as a plant manager working for companies such as Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, National Aluminum Production co, Roper Eastern, Litho-Strip, Pre-Coat Metals, and Midwest Metal Coating. Upon retirement he traveled to Sao Palo, Brazil to help build a coil coating company there. Joe was featured in a national coil-coating magazine for his expertise in the field.

He was a lover of old cars and motorcycles. Even when he was extremely ill, he was purchasing another motorcycle in hopes of riding again in the near future.

Joe and a faithful group of motorcycle enthusiasts used to ride every Saturday to a new “breakfast” destination.

He loved that motorcycle group and kept in touch with so many of the “gang” until his death. Even his 70th birthday was spent on a motorcycle tour through Australia.

This was a trip that he loved and cherished.

Joe also used to attend “choir practice” (actually the group’s code name for playing poker) on Friday nights in Bonham with a group of incredible men. His “choir practice” was something he always looked forward to…even when he had a losing hand.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife Joyce Darling of 62 years; his son Jeffrey Darling and wife Debbie Darling; daughter Jill Darling; granddaughter Amber Splawn and husband Paul Splawn; great grandsons Hayden and Kason Splawn; grandson Michael Darling; his sister Margaret Walter and countless other nieces, nephews, cousins, and family members.

A special thanks goes out to Dave, Bert, Roy, Ron, Les, Michael, Paul, and Lois of the motorcycle “gang” for always staying in touch with our father and for agreeing to do a ride in Joe’s honor in the near future.

Thank you to Ron Callahan for picking up the final motorcycle for Joe shortly before his death.

Another heartfelt thank you goes out to the doctors and nurses at Baylor Heart Hospital in Plano for their care and compassion during Joe’s last days. Dr. Bayya, you are an amazing woman, and we wish more doctors were like you.

Bonham-Naomi Lee (Trapp) Bolin, age 98 of Bonham, TX was born on February 2, 1922 in Ector, TX to James Odas and Pearley (Jarrell) Trapp and passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2021 at the Woodmore Assisted Living Center. A private graveside service was held at Philadelphia Cemetery. Rev. Kevin Davis officiated. Serving as pallbearers were Monty Babers, Travis Scharlach, Dell Babers, Joseph Bolin, Seth Scharlach, and Shad Scharlach.

Naomi married Joe Rowden Bolin on August 28, 1938 in Fannin County, TX; he preceded her in death on September 20, 2004. She was a registered nurse and worked for the Sam Rayburn Veterans Administration where she retired. Naomi was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was a member of the Gober Baptist Church.

She is survived by son, Bob Bolin, daughters, Yvonne Brown, Delores Babers, and Sue Scharlach; along with 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren.

Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend. She was kindhearted, loving, and never met a stranger; Dorothy would do for others before doing for herself.

She enjoyed taking care of her family as well as her brothers and sister; that was her hobby.

PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE CITY OF RAVENNA TEXAS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM The City of Ravenna will hold a public hearing at 7:00 PM on January 19, 2021, at City Hall, 103 N. Main Street, Ravenna, TX 75479, regarding the submission of an application to the Texas Department of Agriculture for a Texas Community Development Block Grant Program (TxCDBG) grant. The purpose of this meeting is to allow citizens an opportunity to discuss the citizen participation plan, the development of local housing and community development needs, the amount of TxCDBG funding available, all eligible TxCDBG activities, and the use of past TxCDBG funds. Game Warden Field Notes

Jan. 8, 2021 Penny Pinching A Shelby County game warden followed up on an ongoing investigation of a local individual who had hunted without a valid hunting license when he shot a buck in 2019. The subject confessed to not buying the license to save money for college. Case pending.

Mama’s Got Your Back Two Harris County game wardens followed up on a local poaching complaint and discovered a suspect who had harvested a white-tailed doe had done so without landowner consent. The suspect confessed to poaching and when asked to collect the deer meat, was surprised to find his mom had hidden the illegal deer meat under the couch while the wardens visited with him outside the home. Multiple charges and restitution pending.

Holy Crappie An Upshur County game warden received an anonymous tip about a substantial amount of fish that had been cleaned and dumped at Lake O’ the Pines near Ore City. The warden and his partner responded and inspected the property where the fish were dumped and discovered that two out of state fishermen were responsible. The two fishermen had been fishing every day for a week and were staying at a motel at the local marina. Further investigation revealed 273 crappie, 173 fish over the legal state possession limit, were taken, filleted and stored in ice chests and freezers on the property. More than 350 crappie fillets were seized and donated to multiple families around the area. Multiple charges and restitution pending.

Turtle-y Illegal A warden was notified about a complaint regarding a local pet store in San Antonio that had a tortoise for sale. Upon inspection of the pet store, the warden seized a Texas

What’s in the Bag? A Val Verde County game warden was patrolling the northern end of the county for white-tailed deer hunting compliance when he contacted several subjects who were acting evasive when asked simple hunting related questions.

Further questioning revealed the group had been trespassing and duck hunting without licenses or duck stamps in between their deer hunt. The breasted-out ducks were found neatly stored in a potato chip bag. Multiple cases and restitution pending.

See You Later, Alligator Three game wardens from Johnson, Ellis and Harris Counties and a State Park Police Officer concluded a three-month investigation into an alligator poaching case. In mid-September, game wardens received a tip about an individual living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area who had poached an alligator somewhere on the Trinity River at night while bow fishing. After an extensive search, the subject was identified and found to live in Waxahachie. Two of the wardens questioned the individual at his home and, after some time, he admitted to shooting the alligator. The man also told

wardens that it happened on a stretch of the Trinity River near Centerville and his friend had been driving the boat and working the spotlight. Further investigation revealed that the friend shot the alligator with a pistol after it had been shot with the bow twice. The head of the alligator, which was buried on his parent’s property, was recovered from the suspect. With information about the additional suspect, a warden and park police officer questioned the friend who also confessed to poaching the alligator. Repeat Offender A Uvalde County game warden was on patrol when she saw a subject shoot from a vehicle on a farm to market road.

After a short pursuit, the truck pulled over and she contacted the subject. At first, he said he didn’t shoot but finally admitted to shooting at a coyote.

When the warden was retrieving the gun, she noticed a deer backstrap in a plastic bag in the back seat. The man said he got the meat from his uncle.

The warden and the man went to the uncle’s house to confirm the story, and after a short visit the man finally admitted to shooting the deer at night from another public road in the area. Multiple charges and restitution pending.

By Rich Hilliard Despite dealing with COVID-19 concerns, Class 2A Sam Rayburn has still excelled thus far during the 2020-21 girls basketball season.

The Lady Rebels, who started December in a covid-related quarantine, reached the end of the 2020 portion of their schedule with an 8-1 overall record, after the Dec. 31 non-district game against Whitesboro was canceled due to “covid concerns” per Sam Rayburn ISD’s Facebook page.

The Lady Rebels fended off a likewise determined Trenton team, 37-30, on the road on Dec. 28 to improve to 2-1 in District 14-2A -- a game rescheduled from Dec. 15 due to “recent close contact quarantines” per the SRISD Facebook page.

Sam Rayburn’s roster on Dec. 28 included two superlative winners in the Lady Rebels’ previous district: juniors Addyson Nichols for defense and Avreigh Chaffin as the top newcomer.

Also, the Dec. 28 roster included senior Kaylen Cockrill, a second-team all-district recipient last season, and sophomore Baylee Williams, an honorable mention.

Sam Rayburn, a bi-district finalist the last two seasons in its previous district, also benefited on Dec. 28 from the efforts of freshman Abbi Keeton as it vies this season for one of the four postseason berths available in the new 14-2A. Note: Sam Rayburn (9-1) improved to 3-1 in District 14-2A girls basketball on Jan. 5 with a 46-44 win at Wolfe City.

Fannin Co. senior spikers earn academic all-state

By Rich Hilliard Trios from Bonham and Leonard joined a Trenton player in garnering academic all-state recognition in volleyball from the Texas Girls Coaches Association for 2020.

The Class 3A list included Bonham’s Brianna Cruz, Addysan Early and Chyrsi Hemby and Leonard’s Ashleigh Butler, Taylor Reed and Madison Vaughn.

Meanwhile, Trenton’s Gracie Holden made the 2A list.
