Claudia Ware will do next month what she has done for the last 16 years: Play softball Since age five, the sport has been synonymous with “Shorty.”

She’s also been known by that nickname since high school -- when the 5-3 Leonard alumna led the Lady Tigers to their best days in the sport.

For the last three years, Ware has competed on diamonds for Campbell University, an NCAA Division I program in Buies Creek, North Carolina.

Mainly positioned in center field, she had a .306 batting average, 44 hits, 20 runs batted in, nine stolen bases -- and a team-leading 22 walks -- earning a spot on the All-Big South Freshman Team. She started all 54 games.

by COVID-19, Ware still excelled, starting all 25 games played in left field.

She also recorded 23 hits -- three doubles, a triple and a grand slam for her first collegiate career home run -- to go with 10 RBI. Playing a full season -- 47 games -- Ware resumed her successful collegiate days

last spring, classified as a redshirt sophomore. She posted a team-leading .441 on-base-percentage to go with a .577 slugging percentage and a .984 fielding percentage. Hitting .341, Ware recorded 42 hits -- 11 doubles, four home runs and three triples -- 27 runs, 25 RBI, 20 walks and nine stolen bases.

When Campbell starts its 2022 softball campaign -her next-to-last -- in February, Ware has a team and personal aspiration for the upcoming season. “[M]y goal is to lead my team to another Big South Championship, which I think we have a great chance at doing,” she said.

“Personally, I would love to finish the season being named the Big South Player of the Year.”

Said Ware “Extending my softball career into college has allowed me to create friendships that will last a life time!”

“I also love that I get to share my passion for softball with my teammates.”

by Rich Hilliard A successful season in one sport at a school often means something for the next scheduled: Overlapping seasons -- or at least butting up against one another.

That was true again this fall at Leonard where, like at many small schools, each sport often shares athletes with the next.

Football ended on Nov. 19 in the area round of the playoffs -- three days later, the Tigers’ basketball season began.

Leonard posted a 21-point win on the court on opening night and has

kept winning -- already with double-digit victories -- in preparation for vying for an extended season in boys’ basketball.

Senior David Brooks, a second-team All-District 11-3A selection last season, joins senior Luke Murphy, senior Justin Campbell and sophomore Ethan Richardson -- each an honorable mention -as returning recognition recipients for the Tigers.

Leonard is seeking its fifth postseason trip in the boys’ sport in the last six years -- last season’s twowin district effort a rare miss for the Tigers.

3. Approve meeting minutes from 12/01/2021 Regular Meeting: Motion was made by Commission member Gilbert Welch, seconded

by Commission member Matt Tittsworth and passed to approve minutes.

Gilbert Welch discussed issues he had with the application presented to the commission, how corrections on the application would be needed and his reservations to approve less road frontage. Martin Sanchez with The Sanchez Group out of McKinney, then asked to speak to present the reasons for his company’s request and the benefits that will be coming to Fannin County with this proposed development. Representing the property owners, Lakewood Capital Group out of Knoxville, TN, Mr. Sanchez explained that the development being proposed is a high-end gated community with properties ranging from $600,000 to $900,000 that when completed would be adding approximately 60 to 70 million to the county’s tax rolls. Currently their plan is involving 73 lots within their 125 acres with no less than 1.3 acres per lot with some lots having upward of 3 acres. Handing out colored flyers depicting the concept plan for the two phases of the proposed development, The Peninsula and The Shores Mr. Sanchez spoke about other states where Lakewood’s investments are located and offered to answer any questions the commission might have. After much discussion and reaching the consensus that special exceptions to the 100’ road frontage regulation is trailblazing ground with many factors needing to be considered, Mr. Sanchez said that he could agree to nothing narrower than 60’ road frontage for an agreed upon percentage of his lots and would be open to sitting down with Daniel Harrison and the Commission in working through this. Wrapping up the discussion, the commission decided to have this as an agenda item at the

next meeting with the hopes of combining the Lake Ralph Hall Zoning meeting where Daniel Harrison is scheduled to speak to possibly come to an agreement on the specifics needed to go forward.

5. Discussion, consideration and action regarding changes and/or amendments to the Lake Zoning Regulations – Enforcement Protocol and Letters: Gilbert Welch first requested from Di Hopkins after some discussion, a vicinity map showing every application for permits, grants, etc. to show what’s changed and what has not changed. He also requested a verbiage change be made in the last paragraph of the first notice letter and the third paragraph of the second notice letter. Motion was made by Commission member Kevin Darwin to approve the letters with the changes made, seconded by Matt Titsworth and passed to be submitted to the Fannin County Commissioners Court.

6. Discussion, consideration and action regarding changes and/or amendments to the Lake Zoning Regulations – Masonry Language: Motion was made by Gilbert Welch, seconded by Kevin Darwin for changes to be approved and submitted to the FC Commissioners Court. Motion passed.

7. Discussion, consideration and action regarding changes and/or amendments to the Lake Zoning Regulations – Wrecking and Salvage Yards: After some discussion about wrecking/salvage yards being removed as acceptable use in the 5,000 ft Buffer Zone and the numbering of the amendment not matching per what was in the manual, (it was discovered that the discrepancy existed due to a previous edited amendment,) Gilbert Welch made the motion that this item be sent to Commissioners Court with Matt Titsworth seconding the motion and motion passed.

8. Discussion, consideration and action regarding changes and/or modifications by landowners: There were no other landowners with change requests to be heard.

Thursday, January 6, 2022, County Judge Randy Moore called to order a Public Hearing before the Bois D’Arc Lake Zoning Commission at 8:20 a.m. Quorum was established as all members of the commission were present with member Gary Fernandes attending by phone.

2. Hear public comments regarding changes to text in the Bois D’Arc Lake Zoning Regulations on the subject of Enforcement Protocol, Wrecking/Salvage yards and Masonry: After calling the hearing to order, Judge Moore announced that the name “Bois D’Arc Lake” had been made official and would henceforth be listed as such on all maps and official documents. He then asked if there were anyone wishing to comment on the matter the hearing was called for. Fannin County Commissioner Jerry Magness commented on the existing county ordinances regarding “wrecking/ salvage yards” that are currently not being enforced and began a discussion on the enforceability of those regulations and what penalties could be applied. The discussion covered the enforcement laws and wrapped up with the consensus that any zoning violations would first come before the Bois D’Arc Lake Zoning Commission in the enforcement process.

3. Adjourn: Hearing was adjourned at 8:32 a.m.

Discussion, consideration and action to set a public hearing on February 3, 2022, to hear comments regarding a Change in Zoning application – Property ID#83091, from A&R, Agriculture to RE, Rural Estate Single-Family District: Judge Moore noted that item number 9 would be addressed first out of consideration for the citizen involved. Fannin County Development Services Director Di Hopkins stated that the property owner had not yet arrived but went on to explain that this was involving a triangular shaped property whose owner could not meet the setback requirements for agricultural properties and was requesting a zoning change that would lessen the setback requirement. After some discussion it was determined that the application presented to the commission was incomplete and it might be to the advantage of the property owner to request a Low-Density Zone change instead of the Rural Estate Single – Family District. Di Hopkins noted that this would be one of what was sure to be many more requests of zoning change to address the issue of setback requirements and voiced the question if Low-Density Single-Family Zoning would be the better option for residents going forward. Motion was made by Gilbert Welch to set a hearing for February 3rd 8:20 a.m. to hear comments regarding a change in zoning application for property ID# 83091 from A&R Agriculture to Rural Estate Single Family or Low-Density Single Family. Motion was seconded by Gary Fernandes and passed.

completely. Cut bacon in half. Scoop 1 Tbsp. of stuffing onto end of bacon and roll up. Spray baking sheet and place each roll seam side down. Place toothpick in top to hold.

Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes, turn rolls and replace toothpicks.

Continue cooking another 15-18 minutes. I cook mine the full 18, because I want my bacon done! You’ll love them!

I was to spend the last eight months of my prisoner of war days here. Today I want to focus on the people who, to me, were the real Stalag Luft I. I don’t think that I was prepared to learn the size of the camp people-wise.

During the eight months we were together I got to know everyone on a personal basis, but the 68 years that have passed since the end of World War II the remembering of names skipped out.

But I had something happen about three months ago that gave birth both to the story and the thought that I am using in “Written Down in the Lamb’s Book of Life”. Let me explain.

My son-in-law knew of my interest and surprised me with two findings: (1) a room roster with my signature and those of all my roommates, and (2) a set of pictures showing not only the whole camp but more specifically the barracks I was in. I was assigned to North 2 compound, barracks 6 and room 2. We had 19 residents all American airmen. Our room measured 20’ X 20’. In those crowded quarters we cooked, ate, slept, played games (mostly Bridge), did our writing and swapped tall tales from back home.

It was a miracle in itself that we were able to live peaceably with one another. I was extremely proud of the respect that we had for one another.

The approximately 10,000 airmen in our camp represented the loss of 5,000 aircraft. In the 19 prisoners in Room 2, there were pilots, bombardiers and navi-

Rick’s Welding came about during a conversation with Jim Ellison of TAC (Texas Association of Counties).

Commissioner Magness then headed the discussion as he had been the one to request it being added to the agenda; stating that there is a lot of talk about several subdivisions being looked at in his area as well as in other precincts.

Noting that there will be a study needing to take place regarding this matter, he said this was somewhat overlooked when the plans for Lake Bois D’Arc first began.

Due to the impact made to the roads with the increased traffic coming from the creation of subdivisions, and the increased work needed from the county for the roadwork, it was pointed out by Mr. Ellison to the Commissioners that Fannin County would be entitled to impose a fee for each subdivision. After much discussion, and with Commissioner Lane noting that this would need to be acted on quite swiftly as Mr. Ellison had advised that the assessment for those impact fees would need to be done during the platting process of the subdivisions; a citizen of Fannin County who is an engineer, came forward to agree with Commissioners Lane’s statement. He stated that if the county decides to do this, time is of the essence as it will take time to get an engineering crew to the sites for the study needed to assess those impact fees. After hearing from the citizen, Judge Moore commented on how this was a discussion-only item but stated he does believe this needs to be looked at by the commissioners and be readdressed when more information is obtained.

EXECUTIVE SESSION: Personnel Matters – a closed meeting will be held pursuant to Sec. 551.074 of the Government Code for (1) deliberation of personnel matters regarding the appointment, employment, evaluation, reassignment, duties, discipline, or dismissal of a public officer or employee; or (2) to hear a complaint or charge against an officer or employeeregarding Environmental Development and Precinct 4 positions: Per Commissioner Lackey’s request, this

13. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Lane thanked everyone for coming and said that with her daughter Autumn being sick with the flu, (not Covid) she advised everyone to take precautions from coming down with other viruses and wished Judge Moore a Happy Birthday.

Commissioner Self also thanked all for coming.

Commissioner Magness stated he was glad to be back to work, was proud of his crew, and thanked everyone for coming.

Commissioner Lackey thanked everyone for coming, wished Judge Moore a Happy Birthday, and hopes things improve in the healthcare field as Covid has caused his children, in that field to not enjoy their work like they did before all the Covid craziness hit. Concluding that he appreciates the work they and all the healthcare and emergency workers do, he stated that he also appreciates serving the county.

Judge Moore agreed with Commissioner Lackey about appreciating the healthcare workers. Before giving the current covid stats, he noted the similarities between the new Covid strain and the flu.

With that, he said there are 151 active cases today. On a positive note, the fatalities still stand at 154. The hospitalization rate is 14.32%. He shared that last week his wife became ill and there was room in the Bonham Hospital. Regarding his wife, he thanked everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and food items.

He also stated that though there is not a burn ban in place, with windy dry conditions; it is very unwise to start a fire and asked everyone to use common sense and not start any fires. Before concluding, he advised that the NTMWD Board recently approved to make official the name Bois D’Arc Lake for the recently constructed reservoir in Fannin County.

He wished all a blessed New Year in 2022.

While we remain in the grip of this virus, it’s a good idea to revisit some of the following pointers on helping people who live with Alzheimer’s or other dementia to safely weather the storm.

Persons living with dementia may need reminders regarding: • Hand-washing and moisturizing. Caregivers should consider implementing a supervised hand-washing schedule.

• Covering nose and mouth during a sneeze or cough.

• Refraining from placing things in the mouth.

• Staying in a particular area.

• Taking medications appropriately.

• Adopting social distancing practices and refraining from sharing items.

• Following any other procedures that would require memory and judgment.

JACK WYLIE HENDERSON Jack Wylie Henderson, Jr., 68, of Bonham, TX passed away peacefully on January 2, 2022, from complications of COVID. Born May 19, 1953, in Olive Hill, KY to Jack Wylie Henderson, Sr. and Doris Nadine Blevins Henderson. Jack proudly served in US Navy. Jack was survived by wife, Pamela, and children Damon, Derrick and Stephanie, Eric, Michelle and Justin, and six grandchildren. Jack was also survived by brothers Shane, Donald and Zachary and sisters Donna, Deborah, and Rachael. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Jill, son Daniel, and stepmother Viola. A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints, 1540 S State Hwy 78, Bonham, TX 75418. A graveside service to celebrate the life of Helen Jane Myracle Thomas will be held Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 3 p.m. at Providence Cemetery, FM 1550, Ladonia, Texas, (Cooper Sorrels if inclement weather).

Jane was born in Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas, on January 21, 1943. She passed away on Friday, December 31, 2021 at Cedar Hollow Rehabilitation Center in Sherman, Texas, due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. She was 78 years old.

Jane was born to John Chesterfield Myracle and Martha Helen Young Myracle. She spent much of her childhood at her grandparent’s dairy farm near Gainesville, Texas, after her father’s death in 1943. She moved to Bonham, Texas with her family when she was in the fourth grade. Jane married Johnny Glen Thomas, her “knight in shining armor,” on November 19, 1960 in Bonham. They were married for 53 years, prior to Johnny’s death in 2013.

As a young working mother, Jane continued her education attending night courses in accounting at Grayson County College and East Texas State University.

She worked as a bookkeeper at First National Bank and Carter Chevrolet in Bonham. In addition, she owned a successful daycare, which she ran out of her home.

Her proudest achievement was attaining the position of auditor for

the Internal Revenue Service.

Jane was an adventurous person who loved reading, music and travel. She passed her eclectic love of music on to her three daughters. In later years, Jane and Johnny traveled the United States extensively, often with their beloved dogs. They toured Europe several times, one of Jane’s lifelong dreams.

Jane is survived by three daughters: Kimberly Kennedy (Kerry) of Bonham, Texas, Liz Broiles (Gary) of Spring, Texas, and Julie Garza (Marc) of Edinburg, Texas. Her grandchildren are Dr. Thomas Broiles (Dr. Ellie), Laura Halberdier (Matt), Katy Kennedy, Mary Helen Garcia (Michael), Kendall Kennedy (Shay Wolsey), Kristen Garza, and John Marc Garza and one great-grandchild, Leah Postell. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Linda Myracle, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jane was predeceased by her brother, John Charles Myracle of Telephone, Texas, and her parents, John C. and Martha Helen Myracle.

BOBBY JACK SEWELL

Bobby Jack Sewell, Sr., 86, of Gainesville, passed away January 4, 2022 in Denison.

Bobby was born March 2, 1935 in Gainesville to George and Louise (Earnhart) Sewell. He attended school in Whitesboro before enlisting in the U.S. Army where he served as a radar operator. Mr. Sewell worked at Weber Aircraft for 46 years. He was an accomplished musician, playing and singing in the Rambling Fever Band throughout the years. However, aside from working and playing music, Bobby took up a passion for the natural spring water he has on all of his properties.

Mr. Sewell leaves behind to cherish his memory: wife, Barbara (Vaughn) Sewell and an abundant host of other beloved family members and friends.

Lieutenant Colonel James B. Barr, USMC, Retired, a veteran of the Vietnam War and resident of Bonham, Texas passed away on January 5, 2022 surrounded by family. James was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 8, 1941. After completing his primary and secondary education, he attended University of South Carolina and was conferred a degree in Marketing. After which, James accepted a commission in the United States Marine Corps and graduated from his flight school first in his class.

During his 22 years of service in the Marine Corps, he completed two tours in Vietnam, which included over 500 combat and medevac missions as a helicopter pilot. For his valor and flying, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in Action. Specifically, “His flight was instrumental in successfully supporting the medical evacuation of seventy casualties that day. By his courage, superior airmanship, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Captain Barr upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.” During his time with the Marine Corps, James would visit 5 continents. During brief conversations about his time served he would always take a moment to honor those who gave their life and those that have and currently “Stand Watch”.

After his Honorable Discharge from the United States Marine Corps, James worked at Digital Equipment Corporation supporting Government contracts and then at USAA as a Certified Financial Planner. At the conclusion of his career, James retired in Arizona. Upon the birth of his first-born grandson, James relocated to McKinney, Texas.

Active in the local country western dancing groups, James met Beverly, his wife. He described his first interaction with Beverly, “It was electric!!” Married July 25, 2020, James and Beverly spent much of their wedded bliss dancing, caring for farm animals, enjoying road trips through the United States, and driving with a local BMW car organization.

James’ survived by his wife, Beverly Barr, son, Joseph and his wife, Kimberly, and grandchildren Sarah, Jackson, and Parker.

Brother, John and his wife, Kate and Niece, Elizabeth Barr.

A service was held in his honor at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Bonham, TX on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 1:00 pm.

Bro. Big John Salem officiated.

Interment will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at Dallas Ft. Worth National Cemetery at 11:15 am with military honors.

Bea passed away on Friday December 31, 2021 peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving devoted family. She was born on June 12, 1919 in Honey Grove, TX. to her parents Joe Wilkinson and Donnie (Little) Wilkinson. Bea married Clyde C. Hicks on May 14, 1938 in Fannin County.

Bea is survived by her daughters June Hancock and Reba Wolfe of Honey Grove, TX. and Patsy Burge of Mansfield, TX. Bea worked her early years in the fields and later went to work in a factory and then at Texas Instrument. Bea and Clyde opened Hicks Grocery in 1970 where they became a blessing to many members of the community.

Bea was a lifelong member of the Sash Assembly of God Church and she knew how to pray and taught her family to love Jesus.

Working in her garden and being with her family brought her the most joy. Bea made a splash in this world with six generations under her. She had four children, thirteen grandchildren, twenty six great grandchildren, fifty three great, great, grandchildren and eight great, great, great, grandchildren.

Bea touched many hearts and her constant presence will be greatly missed.

Robert Malcom Daniel of Honey Grove Tx. Passed away on Sunday December 5, 2021, in Paris, Tx. surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral Services for Robert Daniel were held on Wednesday December 8, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. in the Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Honey Grove, Tx. Family visitation was held one hour prior to the service. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove. Reverend Casey Rogers officiated.

Robert was born in the Mudd Dig Community to Malcom and Lavelle (Threlkeld) Daniel on November 14 ,1939. He also served his country proudly in the United States Air Force.

Robert and Margree were married in Dallas Tx. on February 24, 1990, and enjoyed thirty-one

years of marriage Robert is survived by his loving wife Margree Lloydette Daniel and three children. Two sons Ricky and wife Teresa Penn, Terry and wife Lorrie Penn, and one daughter Tracy and husband Tim Brent.

He had a great love for his family and his beautiful 1957 chevy as well as dogs. Robert was a hot shot driver and enjoyed the time spent on the road.

Texoma EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 56 degrees; 1.06 feet low. Striper fishing is good with swimbaits and Alabama rigs loading up the cooler. On windy days drift using Alabama rigs and on calm days use swimbaits on structure and under birds when the fish are schooling.

Catfish are good ranging from small to 30-60 pounders using gizzard shad. Start the day

off in deep water transitioning to main lake flats off the river channel later in the day.

Striper fishing is good using live bait with gizzard shad working best, swimbaits, and Alabama rigs. Bass are suspended in 30-50 feet of water off main lake points. Bait fish are holding around the points attracting the feeding bass.

My name is Don Grammar, and I am running as a candidate for Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 in Fannin County.

My family is from Fannin and Grayson Counties, and I was born at Wilson N. Jones hospital in Sherman. Being raised in a military family I was fortunate to have lived in several states and Europe before I entered service with the Army. In 1991 I chose to

return home to my family’s homestead in Desert with my wife Melanie. In 2004 we moved to Melanie’s grandparents farm to raise cattle on what many know as the Stewman farm here in Fannin County.

I am a disabled Viet Nam veteran and after leaving the service, I began my 30-year career with IBM retiring as a Field Service manager. I spent 14 years as the Information Technology Director for the City of McKinney during that city’s intense growth period in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. In 2015, I again entered public service accepting an appointment as Fannin County Auditor.

Crews finished remaining earth work on the embankment, having placed a total

of about 4.9 million cubic yards of dirt to build the dam. Now, the road over the top of the embankment is being completed.

The last concrete pour is

also finished. Workers placed: • About 168,000 cubic yards of soil cement—to prevent erosion of the dam.

• About 24,000 thousand cubic yards of conventional concrete for the spillway and other key structures across the site.

Workers are now finishing paving and drainage.

A major step at the site, connection of electricity, should take place in January. Once that occurs, the reservoir will be capable of holding, drawing and pushing out water for treatment.
