Ask most people in the recovery community what their most-heartbreaking stories are and more often than not, they involve someone who did great in residential treatment and was ready to start a new way of life only to exit the program with nowhere to go. Far too often homelessness or even going back to your old friends and neighborhood results in months of hard work and a truly brighter path being erased in an instant. Sun Street Centers is here to change the narrative for people who are homeless and suffer from alcoholism or drug addiction by providing 40 men a year with sober living services.

RECOVERYFORBUILDING

Case

Sun Street Centers has 53 years of proven success in the field of addiction treatment and recovery. We have multiple sites in Monterey and San Benito Counties and certified and licensed programs for detoxification, residential and outpatient treatment, dual-diagnosed treatment, DUI and recovery services. Last year alone we served over 10,000 individuals – approximately 5,000 youth and parents through Prevention in 24 school districts, 2,500 in Driving Under the Influence education, and 2,500 in Treatment and Recovery programs.

Study

The Recovery Center has been a dream of ours for over 20 years. The two Salinas lots, at 284 and 286 Calle Cebu, are adjacent to our current administrative office, residential treatment program, and DUI program. We purchased the land as soon as it became available, and our vision is to continue to transform this neighborhood into a beacon of good for those in need. We are prepared to break ground in fiscal year 2022. The Center will address unmet and urgent needs to help men, women, teens, and families suffering with chronic addiction and mental illness in Salinas and Monterey County. The additional space is necessary to remove accessibility barriers caused by current space limitations. It will provide intensive, daily outpatient treatment sites, as well as recovery groups and additional administrative space. We will work with local agencies including Monterey County Behavioral Health and Probation, YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter, Housing Resource Center, and Turning Point. These programs are projected to serve 300 individuals a year at the community center and 40 men a year in the sober living program. Our sustainability plan for the project includes local foundations and private donor support for start-up costs, and State matching Medi-Cal fees for ongoing program services, as well as self-paid shared rent for the Sober Living Environment (SLE). With the Recovery Center, we will be able to offer a full range of treatment services to those in need. We envision clients first coming to us through our DUI or Outpatient substance abuse programs. When they are ready to enter a residential treatment program we will be there for them with a state-licensed recovery program in a supportive environment featuring certified counselors. And when they are ready to exit the Recovery Center will allow them the transition they need and deserve.

Ruben’s Story

“Ruben” is a hardworking farm worker who works long days starting at 3am and ending at 7pm. He used stimulants to help with work and drank alcohol heavily at night. Eventually he lost his job, home and family connections and came through our doors a broken man. After completing a 90-day residential program where he learned about the long-term health effects of alcohol and drug abuse, he was facing homelessness again. Instead, he moved into our Sober Living Housing with other men new in recovery. He was provided help to find a new job, family counseling, parenting skills, and financial counseling. Today he is reunited with his wife and moved back to the family home, he is present in the lives of his grandchildren, and a mentor and sponsor for new men in early recovery. He ‘chairs’ the Spanish-speaking AA group on Thursday evenings.

“Jill” is an educated single Mom in her thirties who has a job in marketing. Her casual drinking and use of stimulants became an addiction. Child Protective Services eventually placed her 3 year old girl and 9-year-old boy in foster care due to neglect, she lost her job and apartment and started sleeping in her car. After completing her inpatient treatment, she was faced with moving back to her car. She applied to live at Pueblo del Mar transitional housing but was placed on a waiting list. Jill moved into the Sober Living House for 60 days until she could move. During that time, she enrolled in CSUMB to compete her BA and she regained partial custody of her children. Today she lives in Marina and her children are super happy to get their mom back and present in their lives. No more endless “happy meals” they now have a ritual of healthy home cooked meals as a family every morning and evening.

Changing Lives

At first, he did not want to accept that he has an addiction. After his third try, this time he was referred from jail, he finally accepted he needed to ‘work the program’. Now he is living in a Sober Living House and has a part time job in construction. He has Sunday meals at home with his Mom and Dad and is rebuilding trust with the family while he looks for permanent living arrangements with another man in recovery. Jason recently ran a half marathon and medaled!

Jason’s Story

“Jason” grew up in a healthy family environment in Pacific Grove. After a sporting injury in high school, he became addicted to pain medication that led to his eventual dependence on heroin and the day he was ‘slipped’ fentanyl in a marijuana cigarette. He overdosed and was referred directly from the emergency room to treatment.

Vanessa’s Story Changing Lives

“Vanessa” was temporarily living in a homeless shelter with her baby brother, “Christopher” two years ago. Today she is a junior in High School and a volunteer in our Safe Teens Empowerment Project (STEPS). She wants to empower other kids to make good decisions and inspire her peers to see that they can overcome difficult family circumstances.

Alcoholism and drug abuse were a major factor in her family growing up. Today she and Chris are reunited with her mom, and they visit her dad weekly during Family Day at the Center. She credits the family counseling she received at Sun Street Centers as a major turning point in her life.
