The Hartnell Community College District serves the education needs of the Salinas Valley that includes South Monterey County and North Monterey County. At Hartnell College we are growing leaders through opportunity, engagement and achievement. We are proud to provide the people of the Salinas Valley with the opportunity to pursue to a wide array of educational programs and services that meet the education and career goals of our students.

Our academic programs prepare students for transfer to a fouryear institution, and our career and technical education programs prepare students to enter a variety of occupations in the workforce of today and tomorrow. Engagement is central to the student experience at Hartnell College. Students at Hartnell College engage in personal enrichment activities,

artistic and cultural events, student clubs and organizations, academic support services, athletic programs, student internships and student leadership activities. Longstanding higher education research has demonstrated that students who are engaged in the campus community have greater success than those who don’t get involved.

The achievement of education and career goals is realized through individual perseverance, support of outstanding faculty, staff and administration, and the support of our stakeholders and partners. Accreditation Status Reaffirmed At its June 6-8, 2016 meeting the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) reviewed Hartnell’s midterm report and took action to continue our accredited status.

Hartnell is proud of the excellent work completed

by Hartnell faculty and staff over the last three years to fully address all 12 recommendations issued in the Commission’s actions in June 2013.

In addressing the 12 recommendations, Hartnell has made sustainable improvements to processes, systems and procedures that have made Hartnell a more effective institution. Accreditation standards are statements of good educational

practice. In satisfying all of the accreditation standards, we can proudly state that Hartnell is an institution of best practices. Hartnell College’s commitment to student succcess and completion has resulted in unprecedented increases for students achieving their education goals by completing associate degrees and certificates of achievement. From 2011-12 to 2015-16 degree and certificate completion increased 96.7%.

Women’s Empowerment Conference On May 14, 2016, the ASHC sponsored the Second Annual Women’s Empowerment Conference. This was a project started by Hartnell student and ASHC member Juana Sanchez Anguiano. More than 90 Hartnell and high school students registered for the event, which featured keynote speaker, Monica Tovar, sales director at Mapleton Communications.

Participants learned how to write a résumé, networking skills, self-care, healthy eating, office etiquette, and they enjoyed a fashion show on how to dress for success.

Student Spotlight Araceli Anaya CalWORKs students are extremely resilient as they juggle multiple responsibilities, which include being students, parents and employees. Araceli Anaya has proven her determination to achieve her educational goals at Hartnell College by challenging herself academically, working 20 hours a week on campus for the Panther Prep/Welcome Center and raising her four children, ranging in ages from 12 to 2 years old. Araceli is continually looking for ways to challenge and prepare herself for a fouryear university, and it is with great pride that we recognize Araceli’s educational commitment. In May 2017, Araceli will be graduating from Hartnell College with the following degrees:

The Associated Students of Hartnell College (ASHC) 2015-16 provide an influential voice with quality representation in the shared governance process, as well as valuable services that will help students achieve academic excellence.

Lights of Love ASHC, along with the Office of the Superintendent/ President, once again sponsored and coordinated Lights of Love; 360 children of Hartnell College students received gifts donated by our college employees. Families were grateful as they picked up the gifts, which ranged from toys to bicycles fully equipped with helmets.

Araceli is truly an exceptional student. Araceli has worked on campus in different departments and has gained valuable experience, which she knows will assist her when entering the workforce. Araceli describes herself as a “hard worker with big dreams” and wants to serve as an inspiration for her children. She plans to continue her education until she earns her Ph.D. in sociology.

High School Equivalency Program (HEP) The HEP Grant is made possible by US Department of Education Office of Migrant Education to students of Hartnell College in Salinas, Calif. This five-year grant (2011–2016) is available to qualified students.

GRANT OBJECTIVES: To serve 125 students per year with 70% completing High School Equivalency (HSE) within one year, and placing 80% of graduates into postsecondary education, technical/vocational training, and/or improved employment.

Mi CASA A place with warmth, acceptance, support and hope.

Hartnell College is committed to supporting all students regardless of their residency status. Through the newly developed Center for Achievement and Student Advancement (Mi CASA), Hartnell College provides customized services to meet the unique needs of AB 540, DACA and other Dreamer students.

Mi CASA offers direct support services as well as a safe space, advocacy, and opportunities for student engagement and leadership. Monthly workshops focusing on the specific needs of Dreamer students are also provided.

Hartnell College served 759 Dreamer students in 2015-16. The word Dreamer is an umbrella term used to describe a large group of students, which includes DACA, AB 540, and other types of undocumented students. In Monterey County, undocumented adults make up 13% of the population and one in 20 children in Monterey county are undocumented (5% of the total child population).

Hartnell College has created an institution-wide effort by developing a group of faculty, staff and administrator allies who have received training and are committed to serving Dreamer students. Together we form an allies network of resources and support people that expands beyond Mi CASA.

Hartnell College’s commitment to student success and completion has resulted in a steady increase for student transfers to the UC and CSU systems. From 2011-12 to 2015-16, student transfers increased by 29%.

In 2016 Hartnell College developed an exciting new initiative to support male students.

The Men’s Institute for Leadership and Education (MILE) Program honors men’s commitments to their families and communities, and assists them with overcoming the unique challenges that men face inside and outside of the classroom.

Many MILE scholars work full time while attending Hartnell, and several are the primary providers for themselves and their families.

While 50% of Hartnell students are men, only 30% of Hartnell degrees are earned by males. In addition, Monterey County has the highest per capita homicide rate for young men aged 10 to 24 in the state of California. MILE is designed to increase graduation rates and help male students achieve their full potential through leadership development and mentoring.

Following a competitive application process, 25 male scholars were selected to participate in the year-long program. MILE is modeled on the highly successful Women’s Education and Leadership Institute (WELI). It is specifically designed to increase male student equity and success through self-efficacy coaching and mentoring. Each of the scholars receives intensive leadership training, mentorship and a $1,000 scholarship upon successful completion of the program.

MILE is part of a greater initiative to provide programs and services for men of color at Hartnell College. Male community leaders contribute their time to the program and provide expertise through the MILE Steering Group. The MILE program is generously supported by the Hartnell College Foundation, The California Endowment, Associated Students of Hartnell College, Student Equity and Student Success, and is directed by the Hartnell College Student Affairs Office of Special Programs.

Panther Prep and Outreach King City Education Center and Main Campus in Salinas thrive with high school students It was a registration marathon. Panther Prep did it again – and bigger. Both our King City Education Center and Main Campus were alive on April 29 and 30, 2016, with hundreds of high school seniors ready to register, get advice, learn of clubs and programs, and meet faculty, staff and administrators. In its third year running, Panther Prep has proven to be the right recipe for getting students ready for college one month away from their high school graduation. Parents received lots of information, too, in the various workshops tailored to their needs. Panther Prep Day is Hartnell’s official welcome event for local graduating seniors. The Hartnell College Pathways Team worked with seniors from over 15 local high schools since October 2015 to help graduating seniors complete the Hartnell Steps to Success process of enrollment. Panther Prep Day is Hartnell’s early college preparation model, helping students to be better prepared and successful in their transition from high school to college.

Hartnell College Hosts Fourth Career Curriculum Institute An unprecedented collaboration with educators

Hartnell College hosted its Fourth Curriculum Institute on March 4, 2016. There were 87 participants that included English, English as a Second Language (ESL), counseling and math faculty from our feeder high schools throughout Monterey County and Hartnell College. The keynote speaker was Michelle Muncy-Silva from the Monterey County Office of Education. Her presentation focused on Dr. John Hattie’s work: Visible Learning for Increased Student Success Rates.

Dialogue and practice centered on curriculum alignment and instructional best practices designed to enhance student success rates. Counselors from the college and high schools discussed a service delivery model designed to increase student readiness for college success, Panther Prep Days, concurrent and summer enrollment and data sharing between the high school and college. Data illustrates that when curriculum alignment and content refresher workshops are hosted for students, these in turn demonstrate increased preparation for college assessment, thereby, directly placing them in college-level coursework.

2017 Scorecard Metrics The Student Success Scorecard was created by the California Community Colleges Chancellors Office as an accountability tool to measure student success at each community college. It is part of the Student Success Initiative which aims to close achievement gaps, improve outcomes, and be accountable to stakeholders with transparent information on key student progress and success metrics. For the five most recent cohorts, Hartnell has done well in improving success in remedial Math and Career Technical Education. The most recent cohort achieved the highest performance in completing at least 30 units, persisting in the first three consecutive terms, and succeeding in ESL and Career Technical Education.

The Scorecard reflects Hartnell’s continued commitment to student learning, achievement, and success through provision of quality remedial education, improved educational facilities, and other student support services and programs.

Career Technical Education advances students and community.

A survey conducted by the RP Group indicates the high value of Career Technical Education (CTE) in advancing our students and community. The results show a significant increase of job placement from part-time to full-time, and a 49.8% increase in hourly wages after studies.

A total of 835 CTE students from 2013 -14 academic year were surveyed, including those who completed a certificate, a degree, or took nine or more CTE units; 160 responded to the survey. Most answered that the primary reason for studying was to earn a certificate/degree and transfer, or to just earn a certificate. Over 90% were satisfied with the education and training they received at Hartnell College and found employment after completing their studies.The results of the survey show that completing CTE studies and training – whether or not a credential is earned, whether or not a student transfers – is related to positive employment

outcomes. These outcomes are even stronger at Hartnell College when compared to the statewide survey. Most respondents reported being employed, working in the same field as their studies or training, and working full time. The RP Group partnered with the Bay Area Community College Consortium (BACCC) and practitioners from around the state to develop a universally available survey methodology.

Hartnell College is a member of the Bay Area Community College Consortium.

This survey is based on completer and leaver surveys that have been conducted at several colleges and was tested through a pilot study in 2011-12 with twelve colleges, two districts, and one program of study (Medical Assisting) at seven different institutions in the Bay Region.

CalWORKs Student Highlight Briana Alejo For many, the summer months represent the end of an academic year. Summer school offers students the opportunity to advance in their academics, improve coursework or physically and mentally recover from the fall and spring semesters. For Briana Alejo, the summer months represent the opportunity to work, establish and strengthen her network.

Briana will embark on her last year of the Respiratory Care Program. She is an exemplary Hartnell College student, as she has demonstrated her desire to succeed by excelling in her courses. Briana recognizes her success has not been easy, but she finds her motivation and inspiration in her 5-year-old daughter. She was awarded the Helen E. Bosse Memorial Scholarship and the Employee Giving Scholarship. The timing of the scholarships could not have come at a better time, as Briana will use the money to purchase clinical materials and extra study materials for her exams.

Briana is looking forward to the year ahead, as she will conduct her clinicals at Natividad Hospital. Briana embodies the vision of Hartnell College. Upon graduation she hopes to find a job in the Central Coast. Briana will contribute to the social, cultural and economic vitality of our region and the global community by caring for her patients in a manner that honors who they are, while embracing and celebrating the differences and uniqueness among all individuals.

Since beginning school I have always wanted to be in the health care field and, thus far, my education at Hartnell College is allowing me to do so. I have been extremely supported by my family, teachers, counselors and peers here at Hartnell. I am part of the EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs programs, which have given me additional support to be successful in my studies. I thank all those involved for their support and helping me to reach my goals.

Veteran Student Highlight Gilbert Bernabe Gilbert Bernabe became a Hartnell College student in the fall 2013, at the time he was still part of the Army National Guard. He was not the traditional age when he joined the military. He joined the military in his mid-20s, after he was laid off from work. He joined to make a difference in this world and find his purpose in life. When Gilbert joined he was already a husband and father which presented sacrifices not only from him, but from his family as well. Gilbert became a tank operator in the Army and was deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. He completed four years in active duty followed by four years of reserve duty from 2008 to 2016. Once Gilbert began his academic endeavor at Hartnell he was unstoppable! He was a full-time student and attended all three terms. He maintained a grade point average of minimum 3.0 throughout the years that he spent here. All while being a single parent, a soldier, an active member of the Veterans Club and the community, and working as a Veterans Resource Center work study.

As president and leader of the Veterans Club, Gilbert brought a variety of activities and events to the Veterans Club table, such as the 2014 San Francisco Urbanathalon, Suicide Prevention 16

workshops, Vet Net Ally, as well as numerous volunteer hours for Hartnell College club activities. He leads by example by participating in various panels which allowed the Hartnell College staff and faculty to get a glimpse of the issues faced by the veteran student community.

A true example of leadership and perseverence.

During Gilbert’s last semester as a Hartnell student and secretary of the Veterans Club, he and his fellow officers created a club legacy which is the Veteran Scholarship.

In spring 2016 six veteran students were awarded with a scholarship, which would allow for them to use as needed to support their educational goals. Gilbert completed the courses necessary for his associate of science degree in business administration last summer. He transferred to California State University Monterey Bay, where he is currently working on his bachelor of science degree in business. He is the current president of the CSUMB Veterans Club and has extended an invitation to the Hartnell College and Monterey Peninsula College Veterans Clubs for future collaboration.

About TRiO The Hartnell College Student Support Services/TRiO Program is a federally funded retention/transfer program for motivated and talented low-income, first-tgeneration students. The TRiO Program motivates our students to ensure they continue to attend class, study and seek help at the Panther Learning Lab, continually increase their GPA, meet deadlines and think hard about their long-term goals. The TRiO Program won a five-year continuation grant of $1.1 million in 2015 that will fund TRiO until 2020.

TRiO Student Achieves Big

After she lost her husband, Mario, in a tragic accident, Dora knew she had to return to school for the sake of her two sons Mario Jr. and Eduardo.

Alejandro Jimenez The oldest of six kids, Alejandro Jimenez graduated from North Salinas High School in 2013. His parents work in the agricultural fields. Life was rough for Alejandro as he grew up surrounded by gang violence; however, he was determined to make something of his life. When he walked into the TRiO Program office the day after he graduated from high school, he was looking for guidance and support. The TRiO Program staff became his surrogate parents and Alejandro thrived at Hartnell College becoming a highly dedicated student. He discovered his potential and won Phi Theta Kappa honors as well as a place on the PTK All Academic State team.

TRiO Student Highlight Dora Marquez shows resiliency and proves it’s never too late for an education Dora Marquez started her education at Hartnell College in 1995 and had assisted in founding the Hartnell College women’s soccer team. Dora comes from an immigrant farmworker family. She attended Hartnell for two years. She had to make the difficult decision to leave college and go to work to help support her family.

In 2014, Dora returned to Hartnell College to finish what she started. Dora found the help she needed in the TRiO Program and with the program’s support, Dora was able to return to Hartnell College making her transition smooth and filled with lots of hope. She found the motivation that helped her to accomplish her educational goals at Hartnell College and to transfer to California State University Monterey Bay. In December of 2015, Dora obtained an AA-T in Spanish and liberal arts with an emphasis in psychology. As a result of the program’s guidance, Dora was accepted to CSU Monterey Bay. Dora is currently attending CSUMB pursing a Spanish B.A. with an emphasis in linguistics. She will graduate from CSUMB in May 2017, and she is now applying for a credential/masters degree in Spanish.

Truthfully, if it wasn’t for them, I would have dropped out of school, and I am truly grateful for the TRiO staff for all the support they have provided me and others like me.

MEASURE H HARTNELL SHOWS GREAT STEWARDSHIP 2016 saw the completion of Measure H projects on Campus. The new state-of-the-art science building is a long awaited project that will enhance the learning experience of our students to years to come. This world class facility will aid in students’ study experience and pursuit of STEM education.

Measure H funds have already brought the completion of a PE Fieldhouse, the Technical Training Building, the renovation of the ground floor in the Classroom Administration Building, and so much more.

First Year, First Fridays A new tradition to welcome new employees

“

New employees were welcomed to Hartnell in September with the launch of the First Year, First Friday program, a year of activities designed to welcome them to the family of Hartnell College employees. On the first Friday of each month, the group met to learn about Hartnell’s programs, people and services, and to get to know one another in a relaxed setting as they learned how all the pieces fit to provide transformative experiences for students in our community.

I am most proud of working with such a wonderful group of competent and team-oriented, cando individuals, in an environment where students are truly at the core of decision-making.

MERCEDES QUINTERO DEL REAL Counselor Over the course of the year, participants met deans, directors, faculty, staff and students who proudly showcased the work they do to make a difference. They toured the athletic facilities, performing and visual arts spaces, the library, the NASA lab at the Alisal Campus, Student Services offices, the nursing SIM lab, the STEM Art Lab, and the Foster and Kinship Care program. The group also got a sneak peek at the Science Building under construction. In an end-of-year survey, participants reported feeling warmly welcomed, deeply appreciative of their coworkers, and proud of the work that Hartnell does.

Louann Raras Human Resources Hartnell counts many alums among its faculty and staff, but the path doesn’t always run in that direction. “Being a student didn’t help me find my way back to being an employee, it was being employed here that helped me get back to school,” says Louann Raras, human resources specialist, who has been assisting employees with their benefits and leaves in the Human Resources Office since 1996.

Louann had completed one year at Hartnell, along with an HR Certificate Program at San Jose State University, before becoming a Hartnell employee. After she was hired, she was able to finish up her transfer requirements using professional growth incentive programs available to employees.

She later transferred to Chapman and earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership. “Taking the extra transferable classes to boost my GPA was something I probably would not have done had I not already worked on campus, and since Chapman representatives were readily available due to their frequent visits to the campus, it was easier to reach that goal.”

Hartnell ramps up student academic support.

Panther Learning Labs Panther Learning Labs are up and running! Antonio Alarcon began steps towards implementing a full student academic support system on October 19, 2015, when he became Hartnell College’s new Director of Student Academic Support.

Since his arrival, he has been able to expand services to E217 (along with the existing operation in the Library, A214). In addition to Antonio and Frank Henderson, the Tutorial Services Coordinator, three academic support specialists joined the team in June 2016. In spring 2016, services began to expand in the form of workshops, classroom presentations, drop-in tutoring, and tutoring in more academic areas.

Employee Innovation Grants Awarded

Dr. Hortencia Jiménez In 2010, Dr. Hortencia Jiménez started working at Hartnell College as an adjunct faculty while finishing her Ph.D., and became a full-time faculty at Hartnell College in fall 2014.

Through her civic engagement, academic publications, and service learning mindset, Dr. Jiménez gets students believing they can have an impact on society and they can do so with rigor and acumen. Her commitment to student engagement is embodied by her bringing sociology students to submit abstracts, attend and present at professional conferences.

As part of community experimental learning projects, Dr. Jiménez’s students pursued research for example, on Latina/o organic farmers in Salinas, performing community service. Dr. Jiménez’s scholarship is further bolstered by her academic endeavors.

She was a McNair Scholar as a student at San Jose State University and recently awarded a scholarship by the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business to participate in the Faculty Development

in International Business in Cuba Program. Dr. Jiménez is actively publishing in her field, and one of her recently accepted papers, titled “Objectification and Commodification of Blackness: The (Mis)Representation of Afro-Cuban Women in Figurines and Dolls,” will be published in the March 2017 journal of UC Santa Cruz Women of Color in Collaboration and Conflict.

On September 30, 2015, the Professional Development Committee announced recipients of Employee Innovation Grants. Now in its second year, this program was designed to provide financial assistance to spur innovation related to the improvement of student learning. Five grants of up to $3,500 may be awarded each year. Applicants for the innovation grants - individuals or teams of faculty or staff - must link their project proposals to specific strategic priorities and goals of the college, and explain how their projects will directly enhance the quality of learning at Hartnell. King City Education Center The King City Center hosted a record number of students from Soledad, Greenfield and King City high schools for “Panther Prep Day.” They were treated to an opportunity to meet counselors, financial aid staff, faculty and other incoming freshmen, and register as early as April 29th for summer and fall classes at Hartnell College.

Responding to the Governor’s call to extend rehabilitative education services to California correctional institutions under Senate Bill 1391, Hartnell College has started offering degreeapplicable courses in Soledad, both at the lowersecurity Correctional Training Facility (CTF) and the higher-security Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP).

The program coordinator, Dean Renata Funke, along with instructors Jennifer McKay and Susanne Burns, received comprehensive inservice training, and have been tailoring their instruction of Counseling and Theater Arts classes to the prison environment – to the delight of close to 150 students eager to reap the benefits of faceto-face instruction.

The newly created Teacher Talent Incubator (“TTI”) program, a collaboration between CSU Monterey Bay and Hartnell College, celebrated its first cohort of South County students with a kickoff event attended by their families and college administrators. The students received a special pin and a stipend of $1,000 generously funded by the Claire Giannini Foundation. The cohort will receive instructions at the King City Campus.

STEM Symposium Celebrates 10 Years of Excellence The 10th Annual STEM Summer Internship Symposium was held on August 20, 2016.

Students formally demonstrated their summer research results and celebrated their participation in this unique teaching and learning experience.

Over 42 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) poster presentations were displayed by the 71 STEM Interns. In addition, 10 poster presentations from current UC Santa Cruz and CSU Monterey Bay undergraduate students

were exhibited and an alumni panel answered questions. Interns worked with personnel from IBM, HeavyConnect, NPS, SPCA, Stanford University, UCSC, CSUMB and more. Each student received up to $3,800 for participating in the internship. The Andy Newton STEM Internship Partner Award was received by Dr. Michael Isaacson of UC Santa Cruz

Faculty Spotlight Mary Cousineau Since 2005, Mary Cousineau, a pediatric nurse practitioner and certified nurse educator, has been an unsung hero of the nursing program at Hartnell. As the assistant director of the nursing program, Mary’s responsibilities extend far beyond those of a typical faculty member. Each term, Mary meets with community partners, professional staff, and faculty members to coordinate complex classroom activities and clinical course placements for more than 75 nursing students.

In addition, Mary mentors new faculty members and leads

curricular changes. Because of Mary’s oversight, Hartnell’s registered nursing program is one of the most innovative in the state, and has been recognized for its progressiveness and student success. In 2016, Mary Cousineau received a Hartnell Innovation Award for initiating an annual service learning partnership project with Clinica de Salud del Valle de Salinas.

Each fall, with Mary’s oversight, Hartnell nursing and respiratory care practitioner students conduct 36 hours of clinical skills training classes for more than 60 medical assistants working at Clinica de Salud. Mary Cousineau is a hero to her students, the Hartnell family, and the untold number of community residents who have benefited from her professional undivided care.

The annual Holiday Feast in December 2015 had an extra ingredient. Hartnell employees filled the walls of Steinbeck Hall to celebrate the season and inaugurated the Student, Employee Recognition Award. The Hartnell community was asked to nominate: one student, CSEA staff, adjunct faculty, full-time faculty, L-39 staff

and confidential staff. The recipients would exemplify the ‘I am Hartnell’ motto. Thanks to the sponsorship of Dean of Institutional Planning and Effectiveness, Dr. Brian Lofman, awardees received a certificate, a $100 gift card, and a personalized brick (to be installed in the plaza).

It was a feast to remember.

Dr. Napolitano met with over 30 students in MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) and some who had already received letters of acceptance from a UC campus. A roundtable that included Dr. George R. Blumenthal, Chancellor at UC Santa Cruz, provided insight into the services and student support at his campus and UC-wide resources available. The students asked questions about admissions, the best choices for them, financial aid, diversity on campus, support for transfer students and more.

A roundtable discussion with regional college and high school superintendents, presidents and UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Blumenthal followed in which President Napolitano began by saying UC is committed to increasing enrollment by bolstering its outreach efforts to high schools and community colleges across the state.

Hartnell Speech Team The Hartnell Speech Team began as a class project by instructor and Coach Jason Hough in spring 2013 with its first six students. Since that time, the team has grown in participating students and has become one of the top community colleges in the Northern California region.

Specializing in individual speaking events, students regularly compete against two-year and four-year schools from California, Nevada, Oregon and Utah. Events include presentation of different genres of literature around a theme, as well as traditional public speaking events, such as informative and persuasive speaking.

Since its humble beginnings, the team has won multiple team awards and dozens of individual awards. In 2016, Hartnell College not only won its first award at the state competition, but also qualified its first ever student, Adrian Flores, to the Phi Rho Pi national speech tournament.

In spring 2017, a new assistant coach will help the team expand to include debate events in the 2017/2018 academic year.

Young minds have first-hand look into careers in STEM.

K-12 STEM Education The K-12 STEM Programs had a great year. We received a new threeyear grant by NASA for the NASA MUREP Aerospace Academy. We are one of nine sites in the nation! We also received a new contract by the Alisal Union School District (AUSD) to continue offering our Saturday STEM Academy at all 12 schools in the district, and serve close to 1,800 students.

In spring, we had the 1st STEM Day at Hartnell College, a teacher professional development day offered by the K12 STEM Programs, NASA Ames, USCS MESA and the Monterey County Office of Education, which included an exciting panel of guests. A new contract allowed us to offer a Summer STEM Academy to over 300 students from the Salinas City Elementary School District, which led to a new contract for the 2016/17 school year for all 14 schools. The AUSD also extended our contracts for both NASA and Introduction to Coding.

During the spring, we launched a new pilot program called Introduction to Coder Dojo. This was in response to a request by the AUSD. The results were great and we served over 300 students from kindergarten to 6th grade.

California Endowment Invests in the Future of Our Community On December 3, 2015, Hartnell Community College District and the Salinas Valley Health Professions Pathway Partnership (SVHPPP) held a press conference in the Student Center to announce a new $1.5 million grant from The California Endowment – bringing its contribution to $3 million in five years. Hartnell College and the SVHPPP are part of a broader strategy known as Building Healthy Communities, a 10-year place-based community change initiative taking place in 14 California communities across the state and funded by The California Endowment.

We know that a vibrant, healthy community with strong economic and social fabric can only be realized when all the members of that community are lifted up to contribute when there is equity in terms of access and success.

Young people nurtured and developed through the SVHPPP will become those leaders. We are grateful for the vision, leadership and support from The California Endowment in making this a reality. A five-year strategic plan was developed to be a roadmap to create a strong and competent healthcare workforce to prepare the local community.

Adjunct Faculty Spotlight

Engineering Degree for Transfer

Nick Pasculli Hartnell College and the Agricultural Business and Technology (ABT) Institute is pleased to recognize outstanding faculty member Nick Pasculli’s dedication to Agriculture and the Arts. In 2015-16, Nick has been full STEAM ahead. He is all about the students!

For nine years, Nick’s passion for education is shared with his students in five different ABT classes. He involves industry leaders and encourages them to present and meet with the students every semester.

In addition to being the president and owner of TMD Creative, Nick is an active member of the Hartnell College Foundation Board, taking a leadership role in the Center for Performing Arts Capital Campaign to give Building K a nice facelift. You can also find him on stage in his spare time, participating as a regular actor in The Western Stage productions.

Along with 15 students and another faculty member, Nick mentored students as they attended the United Fresh Produce Association’s BrandStorm conference in San Francisco. Most of the students in attendance, came away with internship offers.

In leveraging his industry connections, Nick orchestrated the opportunity for Hartnell students and staff to assist at the inaugural Organic Produce Summit in Monterey, network with attendees representing an $11 billion organic fresh produce marketplace, participate in the educational sessions, and bring home a financial donation to the Ag Institute.

The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Academic Affairs Division approved the Associate in Science Degree for Transfer in Engineering, a four-track engineering A.S. degree based on the Model Curriculum (MC) from SB 1440.

We are proud that Hartnell College has one of the first Engineering Transfer Model Curricula for California Community Colleges. This program will ensure that Hartnell engineering students have a clear pathway for transfer to fouryear colleges and universities. Dr. Melissa Hornstein, engineering faculty member, is commended for making this a reality for Hartnell students.

The four tracks are as follows: + Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Manufacturing Engineering + Civil Engineering + Electrical Engineering + Computer and Software Engineering Engineering has traditionally been a difficult path to follow from community college to a university. The four tracks will guide students better and will allow for them to transition to a bachelor’s degree in less time.

The Hartnell College Agricultural Business and Technology Institute was pleased to be the recipient of an industry donation to both host and manage the Salinas Valley Ag Tech Summit. The Salinas Valley Ag Technology Summit was founded in 2014

by Converted Organics and donated to the Hartnell College Foundation/Ag Institute with the mission of developing a strong community of leading agricultural research, business and education in the Salinas Valley Region.

During the analysis year, Hartnell College and its students added $334 million in added income to the Hartnell College District economy, approximately equal to 2.3% of the region’s total GRP. By comparison, this impact from the college is larger than the impact of the entire regional Utilities industry.

This year marked the 3rd annual Ag Tech Summit focused on growers, pest control advisors, students, industry and community members, and researchers. Keynote presenters featured AG Kawamura (former CA Secretary of Agriculture) and Jamie Strachan (Growers Express). California Director of USDA Rural Development Janice Waddell joined a distinguished luncheon panel of Dr. Willard Lewallen, Hartnell College superintendent/ president; Dr. Eduardo Ochoa, president of CSU Monterey Bay; and Dr. Richard Cavaletto, associate dean for the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Steve McShane served as this year’s chair of the Hartnell Ag Tech Summit Industry Advisory committee.

AgTech is not a new phenomenon but rather it represents an increasingly critical opportunity to leverage the Salinas-Silicon Valley proximity.

During the summer 2015, Salinas earned recognition as an All-American City and coincidentally, the City hosted the Forbes Reinventing America: The AgTech Summit!

On behalf of the City of Salinas, Co-Chair of the Monterey Bay Economic Partnership, Dud Colligan, presented Superintendent/President, Dr. Willard Lewallen with the Forbes Impact Award. “A very important aspect of a thriving tech eco-system is the strength of our educational system. Hartnell College has shown tremendous leadership in this arena through its innovative CSin3 program in partnership with CSUMB,” Colligan stated.

Together with the Hartnell College Foundation and our dedicated ag industry and community, we are striving to build and maintain hands-on academic programs promoting studying learning, achievement, and success that equip students with the technical, analytical, and soft skills to pursue certificates, associate of science degrees, and transfer to four-year degrees or begin employment at multiple points along the ag tech pathway.

ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT 2015-16 HIGHLIGHTS + Second year in a row that all six Men and Women’s teams for fall compete in the State Playoffs + Malena Grover was Conference, Regional and our first State Champion in the 1500-meter run + Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams repeated as Conference champions with the women repeating as Regional champions and placed second in state + Men’s Cross Country won the Coast Conference Championship for the fourth year in a row; Women’s Cross Country placed a close second + Football Team won Coast Conference Championship + Football Team won The Living Breadth Foundation Bowl against Contra Costa college; ends with a record of 10-1 and ranked # 23 in the state

On November 7, 2015, Hartnell College proudly inducted 14 into the Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2015. It was a great day filled with over 300 guests anxious to celebrate the achievements of the inductees and to visit with old friends, coaches and teammates. KSBW Sports’ Anchor Dennis Lehnen served as emcee for the ceremony and led us all into memory lane, adding some humor, and keeping the audience engaged and entertained. The keynote speaker was Hartnell Alumnus Fred Ledesma, Mayor of Soledad.

Student-Athletes Were on Honor Roll

Athlete Spotlight Malena Grover Malena Grover, a local product of Salinas High School, enjoyed a historic year in cross country and track & field. Grover repeated her Coast Conference cross country individual championship in the fall spearheading a dominant women’s repeat team title. She followed that with a Northern California runner-up finish on her home course at Toro Park in a school record 18:01. Her performance guided the Lady Panthers to a second consecutive regional title. At the CCCAA State Championship in Fresno, Malena earned a second AllAmerican honor with her third place finish and improved on her school record for the course.

Grover built on her success from the fall in the spring, winning four individual conference titles on the track, and setting a new meet record in the 10,000 meter run. At the Northern California Championship, Malena won the 1,500 meter title in a new school and state leading time of 4:35. She also managed runner-up finishes in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs to qualify to the state CCCAA Championship in three events. In San Diego at the CCCAA Championship, Grover soundly defeated all challengers by 4 seconds in the 1,500 meter run, becoming Hartnell College’s first state champion in the event. She also placed third in the 5,000 meter run to earn her second All-American honor of the meet. She leaves Hartnell College as a two-time cross country and three-time track & field All-American. Malena Grover accepted a scholarship to NCAA DII powerhouse Adams State University and will major in Kinesiology.

Music Education Disseminates Throughout the Salinas Valley

The young and young at heart enjoy local and international artists.

The Hartnell College music department was very active in the 2015-2016 school year with multiple performances by its student ensembles and a couple of special visits from outside musicians. Our Hartnell Orchestra performed its winter concert together with recorder students from the Washington Union School District. Its spring concert featured a fabulous performance by Hartnell music instructor Kristal Kim of the Beethoven Piano Concerto #1. Our Hartnell Jazz Band was equally busy, performing together with the San Benancio Middle School Band and making visits to Loma Vista and New Republic Elementary schools.

During this event, all of our performing ensembles played for the community, and prizes donated by individuals and local businesses were raffled off to audience members. We are fortunate to have Salterio performer Daniel Torres from Mexico, and the Francesco Attesti and Matteo Galli duo from Italy on the campus. These performers brought their expertise in playing their instruments to our college by presenting a series of workshops for students in their music classes, daytime concerts for local elementary school students, and an evening concert for the community.

Western Stage Reaches Audiences Throughout the Year Opening Conversations was the overall theme for our 2016 Season, and one of the new offerings for our students and patrons were the pre-production “{opening conversations}” and post-show {reActions} Q&As. Our lead volunteer group of longtime TWS participants – “Passerrelle” – was also formed and acted as hosts and moderators for these talkback sessions. The 2016 season included titles that the audience found challenging as well as those that were purely fun and entertaining, which follows TWS’ mission to be inclusive and diverse in the stories and points of view presented at the highest artistic standard possible in order to create passionate dialogue within our community. The Arts Council’s Advocacy Committee members facilitated a very successful {reActions} event on September 25th that included special guest speaker and recent National Medal of the Arts recipient Luis Valdez.

Another win-win came with the annual SpringFEST that included: + Collaboration with Hartnell’s Diversity/EEO Committee to engage the San Francisco Youth Theater and produce In and Out of Shadows, an original musical written by Gary Soto based upon interviews with undocumented teens in the Bay Area

WELI and the WELI Forum

Hartnell is Recognized for Marketing Efforts The California Community College Public Relations Organization (CCPRO) held its annual conference in April 2016 in Sonoma, CA. At its awards’ dinner, CCPRO recognized our Director of Communications, Marketing, and Public Relations, Esmeralda Montenegro Owen with a First Prize Award for Electronic Collateral (2014-15 Report to the Community designed

by TMD Creative) and a Third Prize Award for Invitation Design (2015 Athletics Hall of Fame designed by Osborne Design).

The Women’s Education and Leadership Institute is changing lives in an intentional way.

In fall 2015, Hartnell College Foundation hosted the third annual Women’s Education and Leadership Institute Forum at Tehama Golf Club. The evening was an intimate dinner and panel discussion, moderated by Adrienne Laurent, chief strategic communications officer at Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare Systems, featuring Tonya Antle, principal of Tanimura & Antle, Inc. and Myra Goodman, co-founder of Earthbound Farm. Edna Valdez, WELI and Hartnell alumna, shared her personal story of trials and triumph. This event raised funds to grow the endowment of the Women’s Education and Leadership (WELI) program (Cohort V shown above), an award-winning program designed to increase the leadership capacity, workforce skills and college completion rate of female students in the Salinas Valley. Since its inception in 2011, WELI has provided over $225,000 in student scholarships and has graduated 125 women. At this year’s Forum $79,809 was raised for the WELI Endowment. Scholars are empowered through leadership training, a financial award, a student-lead WELI club and powerful mentorship with a successful community leader, making this a life-changing experience.

In summer 2016, CSin3 welcomed the fourth cohort of 33 students. Each scholar received a $30,000 check from the Matsui Foundation to be utilized during the three-year program. The CSin3 program is a computer science degree achieved in three years, thanks to a partnership between Hartnell College and CSU Monterey Bay. Participants in each cohort are dedicated students whose goal is to better themselves and in turn become agents of positive influence in their communities.

JOBS The first CSin3 Cohort graduated in May 2016 and have received job offers up and down the state. This program has a high rate of minorities entering the Computer Science field: 42% of our students are women and 85% of students are Latino. These are unprecedented numbers in a local, state and national level. The Matsui Foundation and the Matsui family have supported the program from the start.

Andy Matsui has provided over $3 million in scholarships to this program and plans to continue supporting the program.

Donor Spotlight Dr. Pablo Romero Hartnell College and the Hartnell College Foundation thank Dr. and Mrs. Romero for their support of students in the Salinas Valley to achieve their educational dreams.

Each year student scholarships are created and renewed by donors to the Hartnell College Foudation. One such donor was Dr. Pablo Romero and Patricia Romero who established The Pablo and Patricia Romero Endowment Scholarship. This endowed scholarship was established in the spirit of strong student and academic counselor relationships, like the one Dr. Romero has with Joseph Martinez, a legendary academic advisor at Hartnell. This scholarship will support farmworkers, children of farmworkers and lowincome students so that they can achieve their educational goals and succeed in meaninful careers.

Dr. Pablo Romero, moved to the Salinas Valley as a teenager with a sixth grade education to work in the fields. After being drafted and serving in the Army during the Vietnam War, he attended Hartnell College where he received an associates degree in 1974. He went on to complete his undergraduate education at UC Irvine, and his medical training took place at the University of California, San Francisco, where he received his M.D. in 1980. He has served the Salinas Valley area since 1980 as a family medicine doctor.

Dr. Romero said that he began this scholarship “after seeing the metamorphosis of Hartnell College into an incredible jewel for our community.” He adds that he is “very happy to be able to give students opportunity who have been pushed out of the educational system and bring them back into the fold. Give them the incredible gift of education. And be able to get students on the path to success and to come back and help the Salinas Valley.”

EMPLOYEES FOR STUDENT SUCCESS The 2016 Employees for Student Success campaign was a huge success, raising a recordbreaking $89,370 with 188 participants. The campaign included 39 President’s Circle members and an average gift of $39.50 per month. Since the campaign’s inception in 2010, Hartnell staff and employees have raised over $343,000 for Hartnell students and programs. Watching this campaign grow each year speaks volumes of the passion and heart each of us has for Hartnell. This important campaign supports student scholarships, student emergency fund, campus area programs such as The Western Stage, NASA, Nursing, WELI, and areas of greatest need. The fund provides unrestricted support that allows the foundation to leverage and invest funds where they will have the greatest impact.

Western Stage Gala

PARTY IN THE LIBRARY The Hartnell College Foundation hosted its Tenth Annual Party in the Library on May 7, 2016, with the theme “Technicolor Dreams,” presented by Sam Linder Auto Group. Party in the Library is one of Salinas Valley’s favorite events, verified by the second year of record-breaking attendance with over 400 people coming out to support Hartnell College and the Foundation, raising over $374,000.

The night featured a cocktail greeting, delectable strolling dinner, amazing auction, dancing to the Money Band, and most importantly the opportunity to make the educational dreams of Hartnell students come true. Hartnell students, Jason Vannest and Rivka Garcia, shared their personal educational journey. Each student spoke about the impact Hartnell’s programs, student success scholarships, and career preparation internships have had in their lives. They both received standing ovations. Each year the event features the presentation of the Hartnell College Foundation’s Leadership Award honoring exceptional leaders who have exhibited significant effort and leadership on behalf of the Foundation, college, students and alumni. This year’s award was presented to local Ag leader and entrepreneur Butch Lindley. Butch has been deeply involved with Hartnell for many years. Together with wife Vivien, Butch has been instrumental in securing philanthropic gifts that have launched forward-thinking programs and partnerships that are changing higher education in the Salinas Valley.

Hartnell College Foundation recognizes the dynamic Party co-chairs Margaret D’ArrigoMartin and Cathy Schlumbrecht for their vision and dedication. Special appreciation goes to the Party in the Library Committee for their leadership and to the community at large for supporting Party in the Library 2016.

The event raised over $50,000 to support the Capital Campaign for the Center for Performing Arts. The event featured a scrumptious strolling dinner, cocktails by Dubbers, the fantastic silent auction and raffle, and a wonderful performance of The Producers in the Main Stage Theater.
