Accreditation Reaffirmed Hartnell Community College District is proud to report that the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) took action to remove Hartnell College from Warning and reaffirm accreditation. This is a great accomplishment attributed to the teamwork displayed in addressing the 12 recommendations issued to Hartnell two years ago to remove the college from Probation status and most recently Warning.

The ACCJC, Western Association of Schools and Colleges met June 3-5, 2015 to review the Follow-Up Report submitted by Hartnell College and the report of the evaluation team that visited on April 15, 2015. The Follow-Up Report was certified by college and district leadership, including the president of the board of trustees, the college president, the accreditation liaison officer, and leaders of the faculty, staff, and student organizations.

SUMMER BRIDGE: TO A GREAT FUTURE The Hartnell Summer Bridge program welcomes incoming freshmen to a five-week opportunity to get excited about science and become college-ready. The program has taken an innovative approach to exploring science since its inception in 2006.

Over 500 students have completed Summer Bridge — a testament to this sustained commitment to helping students get a great start to their college experience.

MATH ACADEMY: TAKING THE STRESS OUT OF MATH The Hartnell Math Academy is a two-week intensive math development boot camp that incorporates innovative instruction and interactive, collaborative learning, and develops social learning skills such as confidence building during a fun and effective preparatory math course. It integrates counseling, academic support, and financial assistance that includes a textbook loan program. The Math Academy is offered twice a year between semesters in summer and winter breaks. The program is offered to a select group of currently enrolled students taking a range of math courses from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, and this year included Statistics. Since its inception, the number of applicants has increased from 42 students in 2009 to over 200 in 2015. While Math Academy helps develop all the skills previously mentioned, the most important student success outcome is the opportunity for students to assess into higher level math courses, and, in some cases, skip levels. This summer, 43 Math Academy participants were able to reach the 80% assessment threshold of the ALEKS software, and thereby skip the next level math course.

Summer Bridge was originally funded by a NSF grant and has been supported more recently by NSF-ATE, the California Endowment, and currently a Title III HSI STEM grant. Its success is due not only to motivated students, but to dedicated faculty and staff who organize the program, recruit students, develop curriculum, arrange transportation, feed the students, and meet their various other needs.
