Founded in 2010, McEvoy Racing has grown into one of Australia's most respected training operations. Tony and son, Calvin, joined forces in 2019 and just two years later opened a state-of-the-art training centre at Ballarat. The stable's latest chapter - a yard at Flemington Racecourse - places the team firmly at the heart of Australian racing.

Tony McEvoy has spent a lifetime around horses A Group 1-winning apprentice jockey before he ever saddled a runner, his deep grounding in horsemanship has underpinned everything since. As Head Trainer of South Australia's famed Lindsay Park Racing from 2001 to 2005, he shaped the careers of champions including dual Cox Plate hero Fields Of Omagh, before building his own powerhouse at Kildalton Park in Angaston, collecting 10 State Metropolitan Training Premierships across South Australia and Victoria along the way. Fittingly, in 2026 his career was honoured with induction into the South Australian Racing Hall of Fame

Calvin McEvoy is the modern face of the partnership His education spans the best in the business - Lindsay Park Racing, Coolmore Australia, and a stint in the UK as pupil assistant to David Simcock at Newmarket, the historic home of racing Back in Australia, he drove the development of the stable's purpose-built Ballarat training centre, and his international outlook, contemporary methods and hands-on horsemanship give the operation a genuine edge

Together, Tony and Calvin blend tradition with innovation, and experience with ambition, giving every horse in their care the very best chance to shine

Ballarat Racecourse: McEvoy Racing's headquarters sits at Ballarat Racecourse, just over an hour from Melbourne, where a relaxed country setting meets metropolitanstandard training facilities. The centrepiece is Ballarat's state-of-the-art synthetic uphill track – a key asset for building fitness, particularly in staying types – complemented by an undercover uphill woodchip track modelled on leading training centres in Europe and Japan. With turnout paddocks, extensive hand-grazing areas and the option of beach visits, every horse enjoys a training program tailored to its needs

Flemington Racecourse: In 2025, we secured 31 boxes at Victoria's premier racetrack and the traditional home of Australian racing. This gives our horses the benefit of conditioning – both physical and mental - in a metropolitan environment, with access to the highest standard of trials and grass gallops

Together, these two bases are an integral ingredient in our success, allowing Tony and Calvin to give every thoroughbred the best possible chance of reaching its full racing potential.

Tony and Calvin pour enormous work, research and energy into the sales, all in pursuit of uncovering the next Sunlight or Coco Sun Their objective is simple: buy an athlete first and foremost - a horse that offers the maximum chance of racecourse success for our owners and our team.

No stone is left unturned, with Tony and Calvin travelling to every major sale from the Gold Coast to New Zealand.

Preparation begins well before the sales, with hours invested in catalogue study and pedigree research to build a shortlist The team also carries out pre-sale inspections at stud farms around the country, forming a genuine first opinion of each horse before seeing it again at the sales ground

By the time a bid is placed, every horse has passed a rigorous four-step selection process This tried and tested method has stood the test of time, ensuring the team only bids on horses they collectively judge to be the best propositions at that sale

Damon Gabbedy of Belmont Bloodstock delivers in-depth pedigree reports covering bloodlines, siblings, sire performance statistics, and breeding pattern analysis

RATINGS

Racetrack performance data on the horse's entire family going back generations, identifying patterns of success and managing for risk Numbers never override instinct, but they sharpen the decision

VETERINARY

The McEvoys combine their expertise with Belmont Bloodstock to ensure every horse of interest is seen at the busy sales

Belmont Bloodstock is an independent agency owned and ran by Damon Gabbedy (left) Based in Melbourne, Damon is also the Australian and New Zealand representative for the French based auction house, Arqana. Therefore, he provides us with a valuable international view on bloodstock opportunities, as well as possessing detailed local knowledge Damon is assisted by Lauren Fairless and together they have helped us source multiple group one winners for the stables

ONCE A HORSE IS PURCHASED

Once the gavel has fallen in the name of McEvoy Racing, the team is busy organising the yearling’s subsequent movements Depending on the location of the sale, the horse may spend some time out in the paddock. They will then head to a trusted private trainer, who will ensure they receive a firstclass education before they join the team at Ballarat Tony and Calvin believe a positive and well managed introduction to training is of critical importance in ensuring they are appropriately conditioned for their next step Mentally preparing them, as well as physically, is important in ensuring they thrive in their new home.

Importantly for all involved, there are no unwarranted mark ups included in a horse’s purchase price

In the months following the purchase of your yearling, the McEvoy office will send you a registration form to capture your details, including your share percentage and bank account for prize money distribution. You'll also have the chance to put forward any name suggestions for your horse

Once Racing Australia is ready to register the horse, we'll share all suggested names with the ownership group and hold a vote, with the winning name decided by popularity, weighted by share percentage

Insurance is included in the share price (though optional) and covers the first 12 months from the date of purchase at auction You only pay for cover on your individual share, and when it expires, Furlong Insurance will contact you directly - the decision to reinsure is then entirely yours.

Race planning, including nominations and acceptances, is managed by Tony and Calvin, as well as our dedicated racing manager, Rayan Moore All of this administration is handled with care to ensure your horse is eligible to compete in its targeted races

You will be notified about all nominations and acceptances via Prism. Prerace audio reports assessing the race with the assistance of speed maps are sent out Post race reports from the jockey as well as Tony and / or Calvin will also be circulated

The team has accumulated years of experience and practice when it comes to plotting a horse’s trajectory to a big target Through combined expertise, they have several different tried and tested race paths to ensure your horse is placed in a race that maximises its chance of winning We pride ourselves on our placement ability and the versatility of our training programe

Tony and Calvin will campaign the horse to the best of their and its own ability. Once the horse has achieved its full potential on the track or should a career threatening injury arise, the trainers will communicate directly with the owners.

The owners will then dictate the next move, accounting for the best interests of all those involved. There are multiple options for a horse’s next phase. Inglis digital is a straightforward platform and is used very efficiently by a lot of trainers to trade horses on. With bi-monthly auctions, they are always timely options. The auction ring itself is also a possibility, and the McEvoy team have had great success offering horses they have trained at public auction.

Retirement and / or retraining are also plausible routes Racing Victoria’s Off The Track program is dedicated to supporting and promoting off the track thoroughbreds and has been a successful path used by the stable in the past

Tony and Calvin have also used their own contacts and networks to rehome horses Whenever the horse goes, they ensure that the relevant papers are completed so that the horse is traceable through its next steps
