ontgomery is the capital of Alabama and the second largest city in the state with a population of 205,764, according to the 2010 census. The city, which was incorporated on Dec. 3, 1819, is located southeast of the center of the state. Montgomery is nationally known for its many historic/cultural landmarks and events such as the Alabama State Capitol, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church, First White House of the Confederacy, Montgomery Bus Boycott, Hank Williams Memorial, Alabama War Memorial and Alabama Shakespeare Festival. The city attracted the first electric street car system and the Wright Brothers’ (Orville and Wilbur) first school for powered flight. Today, Montgomery is the home of both Maxwell and Gunter Air Force Bases. The city is the home of several public and private colleges, as well as military schools. Montgomery’s 15 colleges, universities and military schools provide world-class educational opportunities. In 2004, Montgomery landed one of the biggest economic development projects when Hyundai Motors Manufacturing Alabama built its $1.4 billion automotive plant. The Montgomery location became Hyundai’s first assembly and manufacturing plant in the United States. It employs more than 3,000 team members and currently produces the next generation Sonata sedan. That same year, Montgomery acquired a minor league baseball team called the Montgomery Biscuits, Class AA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Biscuits are the 2006 and 2007 Southern League Champions. The team plays in a 7,000-seat facility known as Riverwalk Stadium and owned by the City of Montgomery. The stadium boasts of several seating styles: executive box, super box, lawn and suite level. Downtown Montgomery lies along the southern banks of the Alabama River, while the east side is the fastest-growing part of the city. Auburn Montgomery, the city’s two largest shopping malls and Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park, a 250-acre park which contains the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Montgomery Fine Museum of Fine Arts, are located on the east side of town. Today, the city is known for its renaissance of historic downtown and redevelopment of the riverfront.

STEVE CROTZ Director of Athletics Seventh Year Missouri, 1979 Steve Crotz is currently in his seventh year as Athletic Director at Auburn Montgomery, following two stints as the interim athletic director. During his tenure, AUM teams have flourished, programs have been established and facilities have been improved. Student-athletes have also been stalwarts in the community and excelled in the classroom. Under his guidance, eight of AUM’s 10 sports have spent time in their respective NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Polls and teams have won eight national championships. In addition, 252 student-athletes have earned All-Conference, All-Division or All-Freshman team honors, while 103 have garnered AllAmerican honors. AUM has added a softball program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country programs, increasing its number of varsity sports to 10. Crotz has overseen several facility upgrades, including the renovation of the basketball gymnasium to include a section of 304 cushioned, chairbacked seats on the home side of the court, the building of a new state-of-the-art press box at the AUM Softball Complex and the re-surfacing of all 12 tennis courts at the AUM Tennis Complex. In addition to the seating improvements in the gymnasium, Crotz also oversaw a remodeling project of the old weight room that now houses the AUM Athletics Hall of Fame and serves as a hospitality area for members of the Courtside Club. Upgrades to the Softball Complex also included bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators directly behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand, a press area and increased storage. In the classroom, student-athletes have been equally impressive, as 226 athletes have earned All-Academic honors from the SSAC and 80 have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Three AUM student-athletes, women’s basketball standouts Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth, and men’s basketball’s David Gallagher, have been named the SSAC Honor Student Athlete. Within the community, staff, coaches and student-athletes annually combine to log more than 1,000 hours of service. The department participates in numerous activities in the community, including the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Toy Drive and blood drives, in conjunction with the American Red Cross. Crotz played an integral role in the development and cultivation of the projects. Crotz has worked with the AUM administration to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. He has also spent the past two years serving as the chair of the Board of Athletic Directors within the Southern States Athletic Conference. For his efforts during the 2010-11 academic year, Crotz was selected the SSAC Athletic Director of the Year. In addition to his role within the department of athletics, Crotz also serves in leadership positions on campus and within the community. He is currently a member of the AUM Chancellor’s Cabinet, as well as the university’s Senior Staff. Crotz was also a graduate of the university’s Leadership Academy. Civically, he is the President of the Montgomery Dixie Lions Club and serves on the Montgomery YMCA Board. Before focusing on administration, Crotz served 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/ region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year following his team’s Elite Eight finish in the 1999-00 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent five years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball coach at Lindenwood University. While at LU, Crotz earned 126 wins and led the Lady Lions to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. During his six years at the St. Charles, Mo., institution, he was named American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year on four occasions. In October 2009, he was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz also spent nine years at Brentwood High School overseeing the girls’ basketball program and winning 210 games. Five times during that span he led Brentwood to the Missouri State Tournament where they won the state tournament in 1985 and finished as the runners-up in 1986 and 1990. For his efforts, Crotz was named the Missouri High School Coach of the Year in 1985. Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, have two children, Kelsey and Jacob. The Crotz Family

Coastal Georgia (Brunswick, Ga.) Dalton State (Dalton, Ga.) Faulkner (Montgomery, Ala.) Loyola (New Orleans, La.) Martin Methodist (Pulaski, Tenn.) Middle Georgia (Cochran, Ga.) Mobile (Mobile, Ala.) William Carey (Hattiesburg, Miss.) Founded in 1949, what is known today as the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) has prospered and excelled both athletically as well as academically in the Southeast region of the United States. The SSAC is currently made up of 14 institutions from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi. The conference was originally established as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GIAC) with six charter members, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the league was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference (GAC) and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. In November of 2012, the league announced that it planned to expanded to 16 teams for the 2013-14 season with the inclusion of Blue Mountain College, Martin Methodist College and Bethel (Tenn.) University from the TranSouth Conference. At the conclusion of the 2013-14 year, the league saw the departure of Southern Wesleyan University, Spring Hill College and Emmanuel College, which all transitioned to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, in addition to Southern Polytechnic State University, which was consolidated with Kennesaw State University. Those vacancies allowed for the admission of Dalton State College and Middle Georgia State College. Both institutions will compete within the SSAC during the 2014-15 season, giving the conference 14 total members. The SSAC hosts 14 conference championships including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and field. Since its inception and affiliation with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the conference has developed a reputation as being one of the premier conferences in the country in several sports. The SSAC boasts 32 teams and 11 individual national titles, while 30 more teams have finished as national runners-up. With its office based in historic Montgomery, Ala., the conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Sam Knehans, Treasurer Sally Shoppe and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The 2014-15 academic year marks the 15th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the SSAC. Since joining the league in 2000, the university has collected 67 total conference regular season and tournament championships.

Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 39 years, AUM has claimed 23 national championships and seven of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and more than 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion.

The 2015 Auburn Montgomery men’s tennis team returns several key pieces to its lineup, as it looks to make its 11th consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearance. The Warhawks finished last season with a 24-4 mark, but fell in the semifinals of the national tournament to eventual national champions, Georgia Gwinnett. However, fifth-year head coach Rolando Vargas returns an experienced team with five of his top six players returning. “In my fifth season coaching, this is the most comfortable I’ve felt because of our depth,” said Vargas. “In past seasons we may have had talented players but it was only in one or two spots. I feel that wins can come from anywhere in our lineup, which will be important, especially as we play tougher teams and in tournaments. Nationally, I see us having a great opportunity to be very successful. Being ranked third to start will allows us to move up and takes some of the pressure off us early. Unlike previous years, this team has more options and alternatives to be successful, which is a good thing for a coach to have.” Highlighting the crop of returnees is senior Nicolas PinonesHaltenhoff, a three-time First-Team NAIA All-American. PinonesHaltenhoff is joined by 2014 Second-Team All-American Othmane Lalami and Honorable Mention Miguel Grifol. The trio was responsible for better than 48 percent of the team’s singles victories from a season ago. Pinones-Haltenhoff, a three-time Southern States Athletic conference Player of the Year, finished the 2014 campaign with a 22-3 singles mark, including eight wins against nationally-ranked opponents. He was also 21-4 in doubles play. “Nico has been a great asset to this program, as he’s played at the top of the lineup since he arrived,” said Vargas. “He’s an incredible competitor with great pose and knows the college game well. We rely on his energy and confidence, because it’ll translate to the rest of the team.” Lalami is projected to be slotted at the No. 3 or No. 4 spot in the lineup, after he posted a career-best 23 singles victories and a 19-8 doubles mark. “Othmane allows us to have balanced lineup with where he’ll likely play this season,” commented Vargas. “Since joining the team, he’s consistently improved in both singles and doubles and has shown that he’s someone we can count on. He’s a smart player and has the ability

to win matches in convincing fashion.” Grifol tallied a 17-2 record in singles and went 19-3 in doubles last season. “Miguel is a valuable piece because he of the way he plays,” Vargas said. “He’s a balanced player who has the ability to make opponents feel rushed. He’s a technically sound with heavy strokes and can be featured at various spots.” In addition to veteran experience, the Warhawks also return SSAC Freshman of the Year Vincent Dubosclard and fellow sophomore Francisco Mendieta. Dubosclard finished his inaugural season with a 20-4 record in singles and a 10-5 mark in doubles play. Mendieta registered 19 singles wins and added 14 doubles victories. “I think Vincent showed a lot of maturity last year,” remarked Vargas. “He plays every match with a great deal of confidence and passion and as a result he’s aggressive and will attack when he sees the opportunity.” “Francisco will be a key piece for this season, particularly in doubles,” Vargas claimed. “Last year he anchored the backend of the lineup and has the potential to move up this season. He showed maturity at times last season but still has room to develop and grow as a player.” Newcomers to the lineup, Sergi Espias, Birkir Gunnarsson, and Luis Vivas will each look to make an impact in 2015. A native of Barcelona, Spain, Espias comes to AUM after a promising career in the junior ranks, while Gunnarsson spent last season with Graceland University in Iowa. Vivas, a former All-American at Tyler Junior College, rounds out the lineup. “Sergi is a tough competitor, who possesses weapons that will develop in the future to become formidable.” Vargas said. “The college game will be different for him but he shouldn’t have an issue making the transition. Despite his size he’s a talented player with good hands that has the mindset to be successful. Birkir is a solid player in both the singles and doubles game. He has experience in big games and has faced tough opponents. I really like his mentality and fighter’s mindset, because it fits with our philosophy. Luis is without a doubt is one of the better doubles players on the team. He knows what it takes to win and has the potential to do great things.”

WARHAWK NATION

The Auburn Montgomery women’s tennis team had its steak of three consecutive NAIA National Championships snapped in 2014, but despite a young team of four sophomores and two freshmen on the roster this season, the Warhawks enter the 2015 campaign with the goal of returning to the title match. The task will not be easy though, as AUM must replace a pair of AllAmerican’s in graduating seniors Jade Curtis and Chanel Cunningham. Curtis, who finished with a career record of 86-5 in singles play and 87-8 in doubles competition, earned First-Team All-American honors in each of her four seasons, while Cunningham collected second-team honors last year. “We had four freshmen last season and I think that played a little bit into our early departure in the national tournament,” said head coach Rolando Vargas. “Even though we finished fifth overall, we had a chance to be higher.” The 2015 lineup will be even younger than last season, as Vargas recognizes he has no returning upperclassmen. However, three of the Warhawks’ four sophomores return after each earning individual honors as freshmen. Highlighting the returners is All-American Paula Diaz, while Celine Lenertz and Anna Rudolfova each earned all-conference accolades last season. “I really like that we are balanced from positions 1-6, opposed to previous seasons where we had a dominate No. 1,” Vargas added. “This provides consistency and a level of continuity that we needed. It takes the pressure off particular players and distributes it more evenly. Besides our roster size, I don’t think we have any obvious weaknesses, but staying healthy will be vital.” Diaz posted a 13-9 singles mark as a freshman, while also compiling a 15-9 doubles record. “Paula will compete for the No. 1 singles position,” said Vargas. “She has experience against tough opponents after playing her last season at No. 2. She has an incredible work ethic. She may have a relaxed personality, but she plays the game with passion.” Lenertz finished 17-6 last season in singles and also put together a 19-5 total in doubles.

“I think Celine is a solid doubles player who has learned a lot as result of playing alongside Chanel.” Vargas added, “Her game is made for doubles as she can hit a lot of flat and heavy shots. She’ll definitely be a key piece as she has the potential to very good.” Rudolfova tallied a 16-7 mark in singles play and a 12-10 record in doubles play. “I’m proud of how Anna developed last season,” said Vargas. “She’s a very good doubles player who performed very well in the national tournament. She’s also shown that she can be strong mentally to battle though adversity and win.” The Warhawks welcome newcomers Alice Baudiegne, Kelly Southwood and Claudine Maheu in 2015, and each will look to make an immediate mark on the team in their debut season. “Alice has tremendous quality in her game,” said Vargas of Baudeigne. “She’s an extremely focused and posed player regardless of whom she plays against. “Kelly is a tall player who uses her height to her advantage, stated Vargas. “The keys to her game are her heavy shot, with a powerful serve. She also has good movement and has the ability to cover the court well. At this point I feel I can put her almost anywhere in the lineup and she’ll be successful.” “One of the many nice things about Claudine is that she’s lefthanded player, “explained Vargas. “ She’s smart and knows how to take advantage of that with her shots and shot placement. Even better though is that she has the ability to hurt opponents off the serve allowing her to play more of an attacking style.” “These newcomers are a confident group, which was something we looked for as we tried to replace some of what we lost from graduating Jade and Chanel,” Vargas concluded. “Another thing I like about this new class is their energy and the desire to fight for every point, because that’s a mentality that will spread throughout the team.”
