Street Light Outage
Did you know that you can report a street light outage to Jackson EMC? If you notice a street light near your home or in the community they can be reported directly to Jackson EMC by calling 1-800-462-3691 and select option “1”. You can also report outages by logging into your Jackson EMC account or using the Jackson EMC app. Select “report an issue/inquiry” and select “outdoor lighting inquiry”. Before calling or submitting online, be sure and get the poll number from the streetlight that needs repair.
Creekside and Lake 2
The Board and the community management team have been busy at work preparing for the turnover of another area of the community that has been under the management of the developer. We are anticipating the area of Creekside and Lake 2 to be turned over to the HOA sometime in the late spring/early summer. There is much work to be done when property is turned over from the developer to the HOA to include preparations for all upkeep of common areas, inspection of all HOA owned retaining walls and retention ponds, and studies of all lakes and current conditions when they are turned over. This work takes months to prepare for and the HOA has been preparing for this turnover with great guidance and supervision from our management team.
Crosswalk on Lake Crossing Drive
The Board continues to look at resident safety in the community. One safety concern is at the intersection of Lake Crossing Drive and Artisan Way. That is a busy stretch of street and one where pedestrians cross from one side of Lake Crossing Blvd. to the other while walking/running, etc. We have noticed that cars do not always see pedestrians or pedestrians step out not realizing how fast a car is traveling. We ask all residents driving in the community to be aware in the warmer months especially there are a lot of folks outside and cross-
ing that busy road. The HOA has removed some shrubs to make visibility better and the City of Flowery Branch will be painting a pedestrian cross walk on that area of roadway to help alert drivers and protect pedestrians crossing the street in that location.
Parking, Parking, Parking
Parking seems to be a big issue here at Sterling on the Lake. One of the issues is parking at the lower tennis courts on Lake Sterling Blvd. When Sterling on the Lake was built, the developer did not provide enough parking spaces with the anticipation that all six tennis courts would be utilized with spectators and other visitors at the same time. We experience that weekly in Sterling with so many active USTA, Alta and other tennis matches being played as well as our very active junior tennis programs. It is wonderful to see all the activities going on at the lower courts, but parking has become an ongoing issue as all overflow parking for the courts ends up running up and down Lake Crossing Blvd. The Board understands the problem and recognizes there is no easy or inexpensive fix for this issue. We are currently working with the Property Manager to investigate all possible resolutions. No option is off the table currently and we will be reporting back to the community at board work sessions and meetings on the progress.

Resident Amenities
Resident Amenity Cards
Photo Amenity Access Cards are available to all current residents. They are used to access your amenities, and for access to many of our events (including restrooms). This photo ID should always be kept with you while using the amenities as you may be asked to verify that you are a resident. This protects the investment that you have made in your community, ensuring that only Sterling on the Lake residents and their guests use their facilities.
New Homeowners
Please email SOTLaccesscards@gmail. com a photo of each person in need of a card, and your closing documents, to receive your amenity access cards. You will be provided two complimentary photo access cards. Additional cards may be purchased for family members living in your home for a cost of $25 per card. A parent must be present when cards are issued to residents under the age of 18 years old. Only minors 13 and over can be issued an amenity card.
Modifications Communication (Tips and Tricks, General info)
Modification can be a tough part of Sterling to navigate if you do not know where to start. We’d like to share some tips, tricks, and general information to make your modification application process as smooth as possible.
The next modification meeting is on June 6th. Modifications are processed every other Tuesday, and the deadline to submit is always the Friday prior.
Why do we have a deadline? It allows us time to go through each application and check if all requirements have been met before going to the DRC. To that point, it is essential to make sure you’ve given all the information you can on the project you submitted. You want to include photos, drawings, specifications, materials used, and any city permits/documents (if applicable). The DRC or Design Review Committee is more likely to deny your application if you lack detail.
FAQ
◆ How long does it take for the results of my application? They have up to 30 days to decide, however, it never takes that long. General turnaround is 7 – 10 business days.
◆ Is there a Sterling-approved paint color list? No, there is no approved color list. Each modification is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The HOA could provide you with a color that has been previously approved, but that color could still be denied by the DRC based on the proximity of your house to a home with colors that are similar in your pod.
◆ I was denied. What do I do next? You have a couple of options. You can accept the denial. The DRC aways makes suggestion as to what you can do instead.
◆ If you do not agree with the denial or accept the suggestions, You must appeal.
◆ What is an appeal? A meeting to appeal the DRC’s denial. Appeal process does take longer.
TIPS
◆ When picking out paint colors, we highly advise having more than one option and stating which is your first and second choice.
◆ There are only 4 fence options:
LOST
OR DAMAGED CARDS CAN BE REPLACED FOR $25 PER CARD.
Tenants
Must obtain homeowner approval to receive amenity cards. You will have to purchase your cards for $25 per card. Please email SOTLaccesscards@gmail. com photos and your leasing documents to receive your amenity cards.
» Horse Rail Fence ( 4 Rail, backs up to the exterior of the community),
» Horse Rail Fence (3 rail),

◆ There is a 75-dollar review fee due immediately upon receipt the application and it may be paid with a check, card, or charge to your homeowner’s account.

You will have the opportunity to be a part of The Sandwich Project and participate in a weekly drop off at the Clubhouse every Wednesday. EVERY WEDNESDAY, we are asking for any residents who would like to be a part of this to make and drop off sandwiches to the clubhouse. This will take place every Wednesday. To participate, check out the QR code to read the instructions on what sandwiches are needed and how to assemble. Shop, Eat and Explore Local:
Flowery Branch and…..Gainesville
After a winter that seemed to not go away quietly, finally we can get outside and do some day and night “tripping”. If you have not visited downtown Flowery Branch lately, you are in for a nice surprise. You will find a pavilion that is bustling with activity. In fact, June 22nd will mark the completion of phase one of the downtown development. Come join in the Grand Opening celebration. In the meantime, there is much to enjoy.
Let’s Talk Farmer’s Market: Open Thursday 4:30 to 6:30 (rain or shine)
For me and many others every Thursday May 4-September 28 is a special time. Our incredible Farmer’s Market is open. The Flowery Branch Farmers Market is a staple in the Community for over 10 years. The market hosts over 42 vendors. You can expect to find an abundance of fresh produce, handcrafted bath and health care products, home decor, handmade baked goods, jams, jellies, pickles, plants, honey, woodworking, boiled peanuts, tacos and so much more.
There are so many wonderful vendors to visit, but below are a few of my favorites.
One of the specialty vendors is a Sterling resident selling Elderberry products. He has a great personal story about the health benefits of Elderberry.
Many Bakers bring their artisanal breads, delicious pastries and more. I encourage you to try them all and especially hope you will visit “That Bread Lady” Her bread is hands down the best I have ever eaten. She brings joy and passion to every loaf and every cookie. Her recipes are a time and family honored tradition shared over many generations. No doubt love is the special ingredient that goes into everything she creates. Please try the baked goods from all of these lovely bakers. But if you do, save me a “round” of bread.
There are also fresh eggs, beef, seafood etc. Seafood lovers should not miss Tom’s Awesome Seafood Ask any customer and they will vouch for the high standards and quality of everything Tom sells. We are blessed to have fresh seafood at our doorstep each week. Look for Rick at the Market. He has a big smile, a treat for your pet and a wealth of knowledge about their products. From fresh local shrimp to halibut and swordfish, their seafood is the best.
The six produce vendors come with vegetables and
fruit fresh from the garden. Whatever is presently in season is at the market. You will not be disappointed with the quality and taste of farm grown produce.
Entertainment Each Month Includes Free Concerts.
Sunday Music in the Branch Amphitheater
June till October. Each month features a different group and style of music. Come join the new music series, Sunday evenings 7:00pm - 8:00pm at our new Amphitheater.
The first Sunday in June features Loula (jazz and blues couple) . Their fun and funky music is great for friends and family.
Bring your picnic, sit back, relax and enjoy great music.
Block Parties On Fridays:
Summer Kickoff Friday, June 9th features a local group Fly Betty. Look for Fox Gradin who is painting a mural on artist’s lane. From food trucks to family fun, there is much to celebrate and enjoy at this event.
Dining and Shopping in Historic
Downtown Flowery Branch
Flowery Branch is home to many wonderful dining options. The historic downtown area hosts a few of those. Of course Antebellum Restaurant remains a culinary destination for celebrations and fine dining. Along the main street you will also find Whole Being, a place to meet for breakfast or lunch with friends and to find a great cup of coffee. You will be blessed with a smile, great service and food. What’s not to like about this lovely historic restaurant? Rounding out the food and drink options (for now) is Beer Me and Peyton’s Pie. You can order a pizza and go across to Beer Me, or stay in the restaurant and enjoy. It works both ways.
Coming soon to Flowery Branch are two more dining options, a new Mexican Restaurant, El Sabor and 4 Elephants featuring Laotian cuisine. Look for these this Summer or Early Fall.
Also, look for new shopping options including a lovely new Boutique. There are more options on the horizon too.
For up to date information about events and happenings in downtown Flowery Branch, download Myflowerybranch app. :
Fun for Family and Friends:
Beyond the downtown center in Flowery Branch great family and outdoor adventures await you. The City of Flowery Branch currently leases a 6.5 acres City Park located on Lake Lanier at 6111 Mitchell Street. Here you will find a picnic pavilion, playground, grill and a great view!
The park does not have a boat ramp but there’s great fishing from the shore or from the pier. There are boat ramps right next door at Hideaway Bay Marina (formerly known as Starboard Cove Marina). You could easily spend the day fishing, or sitting and watching boats and other crafts on the lake. Don’t forget to visit Fish Tales for lunch or dinner. Visit the Flowery Branch Welcome Center on Main street. Information regarding boat rentals, evening cruises and restaurants by the water are featured in the Discover Lake Lanier Brochures. Find out how much our beautiful lake offers. An evening cruise and meal by the water….. WOW that sounds like a great way to enjoy a Summer Day.
Happenings in Gainesville
Just a few minutes away is Gainesville. The downtown vibe keeps locals coming back. You will see people hanging out in the square enjoying a beverage or listening to the music piped out of a bar or restaurant.
From fine dining to an old school Collegiate Grill anyone can find cuisine that fits their flavor palette. New options for dining continue to pop up so go and explore what is available.
For adult gatherings and beverages, Downtown Drafts and Tap It are a fun stop. At downtown drafts you may hear drop in entertainers or play a game of chess. The conversation and brews are exceptional. Up on the roof at Tap It you can lounge in very comfortable seating areas and play a game of corn hole. If you do not enjoy beer, they each also have wine options.
Also downtown this Summer there is the Smithgall Arts Center Concert Series and First Friday Concerts
Concerts at the Smithgall Center are $25.00 and will feature A Tribute to the Allman Brothers and a Local Gainesville Band, Riverstreet. These outdoor concerts are a terrific way to spend the evening.
Sterling Life // June 2023 12
First Friday Concert Series kicks off on June 2 and continues through September 1. Free concerts go from 7-9:00 pm and feature a variety of bands. Prepare to sing and dance the night away.
For Nature Lovers:
The Elachee Nature Center has much to offer.

My name is Cat Baldwin and I am jazzed about fun and fitness.
I have been leading a format that I came up with, Fit4Gold, for 3+ years and have lead classes in several places. I love, love, love dancing to the oldies and grooving with my friends.

I will be leading Fit4Gold classes as well as Splash Aerobics.
I am all about having fun and breaking a sweat while dancing and enjoying songs from the 50s, 60s,70s, 80s and beyond! You won’t even notice that in the hour of dancing we will be getting in ½ of your daily steps!
No dance skills are required all you just have to do is move and groove to those familiar songs from the past!
Please join us at The Lodge on Mondays starting at 12 noon for Fit4Gold. Cost is $5 per class. Splash Aerobics is Tuesdays and Thursday at 12 noon starting in June. Be prepared to meet new friends and get your dance on! New classes and schedule will begin at the Clubhouse in July!

Successfully Growing Grass Under Trees
It is difficult to grow grass under trees. A Bermuda lawn requires hours of sunlight, and it is typically quite shaded beneath trees. A tree creates more shade as it grows, causing the grass beneath to die over time. There is also competition for nutrients and water with the larger, more developed tree roots. On top of that, the tree’s canopy keeps the rainwater from reaching the ground around the tree. This leaves the soil quite dry and less rich in nutrients. The tips below can help to manage your grass underneath the trees.
• Choose shade-tolerant grass varieties (Zoysia, for example)
• Mow a bit higher (three to four inches) than brighter areas to help retain moisture.
• Plant grass only under trees that receive a minimum of four hours of sunlight a day.
• Water more frequently than sunnier areas but avoid watering in the late afternoon or evening. Fungus can be an issue in shade.
• Keep the tree well pruned to allow as much sunlight through to the grass as possible.
• Fertilize moderately (two or three times a year)
Why is my yard eroding?
Is there standing water, run-off after rains, gullies starting on your slopes?
When builders grade a property to build, they remove the topsoil AND DO NOT REPLACE IT!!!
What is left under the sod and pine straw is a very thin layer of topsoil and sub-soil made up mostly of rock and hard-packed clay. Steep slopes, heavy rainfall, lack of proper plant material, and improper grading all can lead to backyard drainage issues.
Cover gentle slopes & well lit areas with sod, flowers and/ or mulch
Slow the run-off by adding a dry-river bed or control the standing water with a rain garden.
What can be done?
• Cover your soil!
• Stabilize your slopes
• Slow the water down
Mix and match these tools to meet the needs of your yard.

Use a ground cover like liriope, or juniper on steeper slopes, or under trees.
Use shrubs and native plants like grasses) which have extensive root systems to stabilize the soil.

WEATHER BY CHRISTINA
Summer pop up storms can bring some of the worst weather of the year
Afternoon “pop up” thunderstorms are common this time of year, courtesy of our area’s warm and humid conditions. But sometimes, these pop up storms can be strong enough to produce wind damage -- including downed trees and powerlines. Some of the worst weather of the year can occur in the late spring and summer months as these storms produce torrential downpours as well as frequent lightning, and winds strong enough to topple trees.
But what makes a storm strong enough to be considered “severe”?
SEVERE STORM CRITERIA
A “bad storm” can be rather intense to drive through, and the thunder can be rather loud, but a thunderstorm is considered “severe” if it produces any of the following:
Ƚ Wind gusts 58 mph or greater (Why 58 mph? Because the traditional wind speed unit is knots, and 50 knots converts to 58 mph.)
Ƚ Hail that is 1 inch in diameter or greater (the size of a U.S. quarter)
Ƚ Tornado(es)
What are the main impacts from severe thunderstorms?
Lightning: While lightning is not a criterion for classifying a storm as severe, a “lightning jump” or large increase of lightning strikes in a short amount of time can signify a rapidly strengthening thunderstorm. These thunderstorms contain strong updrafts, or upward moving winds, that push water droplets and ice crystals higher in the atmosphere. Along the way, friction between the rain drops and ice crystals produce different static charges in the cloud, and lightning discharges the static electrical build up within the storm cloud. The more lightning strikes within a storm, the stronger the updrafts and more than likely the stronger the winds associated with the storm.
Wind Damage: High winds are the main impacts from severe thunderstorms. Wind gusts as high as 58 mph or greater have the potential to knock down and uproot trees, down power lines, and cause structural damage to homes and buildings.
Often, in the late spring and summer, damaging winds within a thunderstorm are due to downbursts, which are rapidly-moving downward columns of rain-cooled air.

Scouting for Summer Pests!
Warmer temperatures mean summer fun, but they also bring pests to the garden and landscape. Fortunately, gardeners and homeowners spend more time outside tending to things this time of year and are able to spot some of these common pests before they become a major issue! Here are just a few to defend against.
Nothing is more heart breaking than tending to summer vegetable plants and then having them ravaged in just a matter of days. While humidity in the South is inviting for many diseases, especially on tomato plants, one thing gardeners can control is the tomato hornworm. This fat, green worm looks like something out of Alice in Wonderland, and it is anything but cute. Just one or two per tomato plant can strip it of its leaves in a matter of days. Rather than using a chemical, these guys can be plucked right off the plant by hand and then left for the birds to enjoy. Other than humans, some natural enemies to tomato hornworm are wasps and praying mantis, so you can often depend on nature to take its course. To prevent damage by tomato hornworm, gardeners must scout plants carefully every few days, as the pest’s green color blends right in with leaves. A full sized tomato hornworm is typically an inch and a half to two inches long. If infestations are great,Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) sprays are acceptable for organic control.
A favorite plant for Japanese beetles are roses, but this pest will feed on many ornamental plants and even trees throughout the summer. They’re easily identified by their iridescent green color, and the damage they cause is hard to ignore. They eat leaves down to just the veins, leaving them looking skeletonized. The effectiveness of using the yellow Japanese beetle traps is debated because, while trapping some, it may also draw a large, unwanted population to the landscape. Place the traps away from susceptible plants, and remove the trap once it’s got activity on it. Chemical control is possible to suppress them, but elimination is difficult. Read and follow pesticide labels for application amounts and timing to mitigate the risk to other, desirable insects.
Noticing yellow or browning in spots of the lawn, or perhaps soft, spongy spots? This can be damage by chipmunks, birds, and especially moles, which feed on earthworms underground. Most creatures dig up spots in the grass, but moles tunneling underneath certainly affect larger areas in the lawn by pushing soil up! Their tunnels can span an entire yard. Reducing watering and stomping the tunnels down to redirect moles are often effective methods, but are ones that need constant attention. Traps are available to stop them from tunneling, but caution must be used and the homeowner educated so as to not harm or injure the wrong animal.
April and May brought thousands of questions into county extension offices statewide about strange, toothpick-like growths coming out of the trunks of many trees- commonly figs, crape myrtles and maples. Ambrosia beetle bores into unhealthy, often weakened and thin-barked trees around the turn of spring, and what is seen along the trunk is the sawdust kicked out of the holes they’ve bored. Over the summer, a second generation will emerge from affected tree trunks to scout out more trees to continue their lifecycle. Once this damage is spotted, it is important to cut away the affected limbs or trunks and remove and either bag or burn them. Proper tree care, health, and maintenance are the best defenses against problems like this. Certified arborists can also be consulted about preventative sprays for vulnerable trees.
And finally, there’s not a person on this planet who cares formosquitoes as they try and enjoy summer fun! Keys to reducing mosquitoes are eliminating standing water in common areas and in clogged gutters and using Mosquito Dunks in desired water, like ponds and birdbaths. They’re deemed safe for birds and fish. Consider an oscillating fan while relaxing outdoors. And rather than treating your entire outdoor area, treat yourself with repellents like Off, Deet or Skin So Soft. Lastly, make some adjustments to how you get dressed! Avoid dark clothing and strongly scented soaps. Apparently that’s what they’re most attracted to. Who knew?!

WANT HELP STAYING COOL? GET OUT YOUR LAWN MOWER…
I recently received the following question.
Dave - In an effort to make our a/c unit less conspicuous in the backyard my wife has allowed plants to grow up around it. I tried to tell her that this is potentially bad for the unit but she doesn’t agree.
We’ve agreed to let you decide. Help!
John in Lithia Springs
So, first of all – this is what I really love, the entire sanctity of a marriage hinging on my word. Sorry wife, I’m on John’s side on this one and here’s why.
Your a/c unit needs to be able to breathe. It takes fresh air in on the sides and exhausts hot air out of the top. It also needs room to be services and washed.
Therefore your unit should be clear of any obstructions, from plants to more permanent structures like a fence or your house for at least 18” on every side.
Not only that, but in case someone thinks you should build a deck over the unit, there should be at least 5 ft. of clearance on the top of the unit as well.
So John, keep the area around your a/c unit clean and clear of debris. If you want to make your wife happy, feel free to plant and maintain some nice shrubbery about 3 ft. away from the unit.
Just make sure you leave room for the service man to get to your unit. Also leave room for your tent so that you will have a place to sleep.
