Empty Nesters Club Spotlight: Walking Club!
For over 5 years, the Empty Nesters Ladies Walking Group, has brought together “new friends” from all over Sterling on the Lake neighborhoods. With up to 25 ladies participating at any one trip- the group has visited and walked beautiful parks, and museums as well as cities and towns throughout northeast Georgia. A trip may include shopping at unique stores in a particular area - Gainesville Square, Avalon & Alpharetta City Center, Duluth, or a trip to Gibbs Gardens in Ball Ground, Ga, as reflected in the photos from the May 17, 2023 trip.
After each walk, the ladies enjoy lunch, chatting and friendship at restaurants close to the venue.
The EN Ladies Walking Group trips are the third Wednesday of each month. Logistics for each walk (meeting time, the morning departure time & place, volunteer carpools) is sent to the Group members by email and will vary based on the particular trip.
To become a member, the following information is required for the EN Walking Group Directory, and emailed to Group Coordinator, Lynn Agnes lynnagnes625@gmail.com: Your Name, SOTL Address, Email, Cellphone #, and a cellphone headshot

Empty Nesters Take on Ireland!
Top of the Morning to You from the Probsts, Nelsons, and Lessers!
What a grand 9 days it was visiting Ireland: The Emerald Isle. For most of us, it was the first time experiencing this precious gem.
All three couples are a part of the Empty Nesters in the Sterling Community and find touring to be a grand hobby.
In our travels through Ireland, we found rolling hills of the brightest green grass pastures you have ever seen at times with the ruins of a castle in the midst , the bluest sky, and the happiest cows and sheep. That’s just what you’ll see on a lazy afternoon ride in the country.
Our adventure began with two days in Dublin, the capital city. The streets were bustling with people and history was everywhere you looked-a statue of Daniel O’Connell, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity College/The Book of Kells, The Temple Bar, and let’s not forget the Guinness Storehouse.
At the end of that first day, we enjoyed a taste of old Dublin with a quintessential meal of a pint of ale and Irish Guinness Beef Stew followed by a traditional Irish evening’s entertainment-music/singing and dancing.
By Day 3 we were being fully immersed in the Irish culture. We visited Kilkenny and Waterford, where we experienced either the making of the beautiful Waterford Crystal or were immersed in the history of the area including the Viking and the English invasions.
Next was the kissing of the Blarney Stone, so if you speak to one of us who did, you might find that we are more eloquent.
It is so difficult to share all that we saw and did on this fantastic journey, from the jaunting car ride through the Killarney National Park, the picturesque Ring of Kerry, the Cliffs of Moher, the ferry across the River Shannon, the limestone landscape of the Burren, Sheep Dog Demo, Galway City, Kilbeggan whiskey tasting, culminating with a stay at Cabra Castle at Kingscourt.
Should you choose to visit one day, you won’t be disappointed.
Thank you Collette Tours and The McClellan Group!

Tips on How to Water Trees & Shrubs
Did you know that trees, shrubs, and lawn grass have different watering and fertilization needs?
A question we’re asked often is “How do I water my trees?
Always water trees and shrubs slowly, less often.
The majority of trees’ roots are typically in the 6-12 inch range, below ground level. Tree roots spread far past the leafy canopy. (It’s a misconception that trees have deep roots directly underneath the trunk and crown.) When you set out drip irrigation, soaker hose, etc. this slow watering encourages a deeper saturation of water that reaches the appropriate depth for tree roots.
Never water trees and shrubs quickly, and often.
Watering fast and often encourages surface rooting and future tree health problems. When you water quickly, only the top inch or two gets saturated with water. Water runoff (AWAY from your tree!) is also common when lots of water comes out quickly and wastes valuable resources, including your money.
Examples of what to do and what not to do when watering your trees and shrubs
Helpful: Some plants and trees need more water than others, but setting a weekly watering day is helpful. When it hasn’t rained and your moisture meter measurement says the ground is dry, it’s time to water. Watering less often, but for a longer amount of time during watering encourages appropriate root growth.
Harmful: Holding a hose with spray nozzle and giving your tree a quick spritz to wet the top layer of ground causes roots to grow toward the water only found at the surface. Roots need to stay under ~85 degrees in order to grow and operate. Surface roots get too hot to function properly.
What to Use to Water Your Trees and Shrubs:
*The #1 tool to have is a soil moisture meter, find out why it’s a good tool for watering.
Best – Watering close to ground level with soaker hoses or drip irrigation soaks water into the soil slowly over time. This more evenly distributes water throughout the root system and keeps soil consistently moist over longer periods of time. These can hook into your other yard irrigation, or stay around your trees and shrubs, and be connected manually with a regular hose when needed.
Other options can have their drawbacks – If you only have a regular hose with or without spray nozzle, you can turn your water on slow and leave it underneath the tree’s canopy. Move it to a different spot underneath the tree’s canopy every few minutes until the whole area has been watered to appropriate depth. As you can see, this can take a lot of your time! It’s best to buy a soaker hose –it’s worth the investment!
Misting, oscillating, or rotating sprinklers commonly used for grass can cause tree health problems if misdirected. Larger droplets falling to the ground can cause soil compaction, and any water hitting the tree’s leaves or trunk can cause health problems (fungus, mold, rot, etc). Plus you’ll end up with lots of water loss to evaporation!
We hope these tips help with watering and keeping your trees and shrubs healthy. If you’d like more information visit their website www. greenprismconsulting.com

July 4th:
A Celebration of Freedom and Those who Protect it.
As we enjoy time grilling and lighting up the sky with fireworks, it is important to realize all that we have to celebrate and be thankful for. We live in a great county. Some may challenge this statement and our greatness, but I see our greatness not only in the freedom we are afforded, but also in the people who chose to help maintain that freedom
Our country’s independence and freedom came at a cost. But, the rewards and benefits of this are enjoyed by us all.
“We owe our World War II veterans - and all of our veterans- a debt we can never fully repay”
Doc Hastings
Many if not most of us have friends and family members who served in the military. The greatest generation, that of WWII learned first hand the meaning of service and sacrifice. They understood that we were at risk of losing that which others worked so hard to obtain, liberty and freedom. Many fought and many died in this war. All who were a part of the struggle and lived during those years were changed.
When I think about the great men and women who served in the world wars, I see determination, strength and grit. They left home and family and only stayed connected through letters. For many these letters represented a lifeline and a reminder of who and what they fought to preserve.
When I mentioned to a friend that I was writing this article she spoke of love letters sent during WWII from her dad to her mom. Those letters each began with the words “My Darling”. I would suggest that knowing he was fighting for her and freedom helped him through difficult times. Fortunately, he was able to make it home to his wife and they shared decades of love and support, but many did not. The numbers from this generation are dwindling, but we owe each of them a forever debt of gratitude.
Let’s not overlook other generations who also answered the call to service. These young men and women were called directly or volunteered to protect our homeland and to protect the freedoms of others. These individuals, in my mind, are all heroes. They should be thanked and respected for who they are and the sacrifices they made and continue to make for all of us. Without them and those that came before, our world and country would be a very different place.
As I set out to write about our service men and women, I had a goal in mind. I made a request through Facebook for neighbors to share stories of military service. A few neighbors responded and below are two of those stores.
Meet Renee and Juan Lyons. Two veterans that understand the importance of faith, commitment and communication. They also feel compelled to be an asset to their country.
When Renee, at age seventeen ,went to her father and said “I want to join the army”, he paused and responded “now wait a minute”. Not yet a high school graduate, Renee made a decision to enlist . Because of her age, and status as high school senior, her father’s signature on her enlistment application was a necessity.
Renee’s father’s hesitance to sign was no match for her determination. Renee voiced “unless you want to complete all of this paperwork for financial aid for college, I’m enlisting.” At this point in her life Renee knew she wanted to move forward and find her way, and to be of service to her country . Her perspective on life and service was remarkable for such a young woman.
Unbeknownst to Renee another call to service was being answered. Juan, who would become her husband, was enlisting too. He enlisted in the buddy program through which he and a friend joined.
So the journey began. Renee’s father reluctantly agreed to sign the paperwork Upon graduation from high school Renee went to Ft. Jackson in South Carolina for basic training. In the meantime, Juan too was headed to Fort Jackson.
During PT Renee and other training recruits were grouped according to height. As things happened, she stood next to Juan for roll call PT and other training. They quickly became friends and a little “more”. I’m not sure if it was love at first 10 mile run or 100th push up, but they fell quickly into a relationship. After two months of training Juan asked Renee to marry him. She paused. First , fraternizing in the Military is a big NO NO. If you are discovered, funds from your paycheck are deducted and movement through the ranks threatened. Renee jokes “what’s a few hundred dollars?”. She and Juan both knew they belonged together, but they took their time. They continued in their relationship and were later married. Due to a physical challenge, and after two years of service. Renee received a medical discharge. However Juan’s career spanned six years. During this time they were married and had two beautiful sons. Through their military experience Renee and Juan each discovered personal strengths and a career path they presently follow. Juan works in communications and Renee works in hospital security.
When asked about what she learned from her experience in the military she was quick to answer. “ The military brings out our full potential. This is done through discipline, accountability to self and others. And without question, you learn respect.” Another comment struck me as something I heard once before but through another voice. Renee said “we should be an asset to our country and be willing to do something for it”. Many will recall John F Kennedy’s words that echoed the same sentiment.
“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your Country”. JFK
Those words ring true for those who founded this country and for us today.
Be an asset to your country.
Also, meet USAF Major retired, Steve Bradshaw.
For “Steve”, the military represents family. He, his son in law and father in law are all military veterans. Service for these men extends from WWII Into Afghanistan.
Sterling Life // July 2023 16
Steve volunteered during the Vietnam War. With a draft number of 363 he would never be drafted. Through a friend, he developed an interest in flying. He saw the military as a route to pursue his dream and he enlisted. Steve jokes “what could be better than being 23 years old and someone handing you a jet”?
Steve served 21 years in the Air Force. He flew phantom jets during the Vietnam conflict. After ten years in the cockpit, he took a staff position where he served during Desert Storm. Flying it seems is for the young guys not those in their 30s and 40s.
Like many, his military experience helped him to find his next career path, working with defense contractors to sell equipment to other countries.
He worked to market Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation (ACMI). This product was along the same line represented in the movie Top Gun. Think back to the training room when pilots explain their maneuvers and actions as they were portrayed on a large screen, and then were critiqued. These remarkable tools were what he helped sell. Very Cool!
He also has a family military connection. A common bond for Steven and his wife (who served as a DOD school teacher in Germany for four years) is that of military service. Her father, Jessie Hendley, served in WWII and beyond. After three years in the Navy in WWII, he determined civilian life was not for him and
he reentered the military. This time he enlisted in the Air Force. He maintained the armament on B52 bombers and retired after 20 years as a Master Sergeant. Following this, he worked as an ROTC instructor. Jessie recently passed, but his life of service will never be forgotten.
Andy Lewis, Steve’s son in law is also retired military. He served 20 years, and had two tours in Afghanistan. In the second tour he and one other soldier held off a group of Afghanistan fighters for almost 24 hours. For this act of valor he received a silver star, the third highest military decoration. This is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States. He is a true hero.
Presently, Andy is retired and still serving others as a PA.
Steven remarked that “ the military shapes how you approach each day. You learn discipline, how to overcome adversity and obstacles.” He also noted that service promotes a sense of brotherhood where lifelong friendships are made. “These are deep friendships and people you know you can count on. We may not see each other often, but we know these “brothers” are always there for us. That never changes.” He does, however, miss the camaraderie and sense of family generated in the military.
FUN FACTS AND DETAILS ABOUT THE USA

Finally, he owes all of his success after the military to what he learned in the military. Without that experience, there is no telling who or where he would be now.
These are just two stories among many. These individuals served our country and were there when and if needed to protect everything that we have come to love and expect out of life. When they enlisted they did not know where it would lead, but were willing to step up when the call came. I find it remarkable that they seemed to find a true path and their “true north” from serving our country.
I am forever grateful for those that have served and presently serve to protect our freedom and others around the world. On this 4th of July, take a moment to remember how fortunate we are to live in our great country and give thanks for all who have served.
A special note of thanks to Renee, Juan and Steven for sharing a bit of your story with me and for your service to the USA.

WEATHER BY CHRISTINA
Summer pop up storms can bring some of the worst weather of the year
Afternoon “pop up” thunderstorms are common this time of year, courtesy of our area’s warm and humid conditions. But sometimes, these pop up storms can be strong enough to produce wind damage -- including downed trees and powerlines. Some of the worst weather of the year can occur in the late spring and summer months as these storms produce torrential downpours as well as frequent lightning, and winds strong enough to topple trees.
But what makes a storm strong enough to be considered “severe”?
SEVERE STORM CRITERIA
A “bad storm” can be rather intense to drive through, and the thunder can be rather loud, but a thunderstorm is considered “severe” if it produces any of the following:
Ƚ Wind gusts 58 mph or greater (Why 58 mph? Because the traditional wind speed unit is knots, and 50 knots converts to 58 mph.)
Ƚ Hail that is 1 inch in diameter or greater (the size of a U.S. quarter)
Ƚ Tornado(es)
What are the main impacts from severe thunderstorms?
Lightning: While lightning is not a criterion for classifying a storm as severe, a “lightning jump” or large increase of lightning strikes in a short amount of time can signify a rapidly strengthening thunderstorm. These thunderstorms contain strong updrafts, or upward moving winds, that push water droplets and ice crystals higher in the atmosphere. Along the way, friction between the rain drops and ice crystals produce different static charges in the cloud, and lightning discharges the static electrical build up within the storm cloud. The more lightning strikes within a storm, the stronger the updrafts and more than likely the stronger the winds associated with the storm.
Wind Damage: High winds are the main impacts from severe thunderstorms. Wind gusts as high as 58 mph or greater have the potential to knock down and uproot trees, down power lines, and cause structural damage to homes and buildings.
Often, in the late spring and summer, damaging winds within a thunderstorm are due to downbursts, which are rapidly-moving downward columns of rain-cooled air.

Scouting for Summer Pests!
Warmer temperatures mean summer fun, but they also bring pests to the garden and landscape. Fortunately, gardeners and homeowners spend more time outside tending to things this time of year and are able to spot some of these common pests before they become a major issue! Here are just a few to defend against.
Nothing is more heart breaking than tending to summer vegetable plants and then having them ravaged in just a matter of days. While humidity in the South is inviting for many diseases, especially on tomato plants, one thing gardeners can control is the tomato hornworm. This fat, green worm looks like something out of Alice in Wonderland, and it is anything but cute. Just one or two per tomato plant can strip it of its leaves in a matter of days. Rather than using a chemical, these guys can be plucked right off the plant by hand and then left for the birds to enjoy. Other than humans, some natural enemies to tomato hornworm are wasps and praying mantis, so you can often depend on nature to take its course. To prevent damage by tomato hornworm, gardeners must scout plants carefully every few days, as the pest’s green color blends right in with leaves. A full sized tomato hornworm is typically an inch and a half to two inches long. If infestations are great,Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) sprays are acceptable for organic control.
A favorite plant for Japanese beetles are roses, but this pest will feed on many ornamental plants and even trees throughout the summer. They’re easily identified by their iridescent green color, and the damage they cause is hard to ignore. They eat leaves down to just the veins, leaving them looking skeletonized. The effectiveness of using the yellow Japanese beetle traps is debated because, while trapping some, it may also draw a large, unwanted population to the landscape. Place the traps away from susceptible plants, and remove the trap once it’s got activity on it. Chemical control is possible to suppress them, but elimination is difficult. Read and follow pesticide labels for application amounts and timing to mitigate the risk to other, desirable insects.
Noticing yellow or browning in spots of the lawn, or perhaps soft, spongy spots? This can be damage by chipmunks, birds, and especially moles, which feed on earthworms underground. Most creatures dig up spots in the grass, but moles tunneling underneath certainly affect larger areas in the lawn by pushing soil up! Their tunnels can span an entire yard. Reducing watering and stomping the tunnels down to redirect moles are often effective methods, but are ones that need constant attention. Traps are available to stop them from tunneling, but caution must be used and the homeowner educated so as to not harm or injure the wrong animal.
April and May brought thousands of questions into county extension offices statewide about strange, toothpick-like growths coming out of the trunks of many trees- commonly figs, crape myrtles and maples. Ambrosia beetle bores into unhealthy, often weakened and thin-barked trees around the turn of spring, and what is seen along the trunk is the sawdust kicked out of the holes they’ve bored. Over the summer, a second generation will emerge from affected tree trunks to scout out more trees to continue their lifecycle. Once this damage is spotted, it is important to cut away the affected limbs or trunks and remove and either bag or burn them. Proper tree care, health, and maintenance are the best defenses against problems like this. Certified arborists can also be consulted about preventative sprays for vulnerable trees.
And finally, there’s not a person on this planet who cares formosquitoes as they try and enjoy summer fun! Keys to reducing mosquitoes are eliminating standing water in common areas and in clogged gutters and using Mosquito Dunks in desired water, like ponds and birdbaths. They’re deemed safe for birds and fish. Consider an oscillating fan while relaxing outdoors. And rather than treating your entire outdoor area, treat yourself with repellents like Off, Deet or Skin So Soft. Lastly, make some adjustments to how you get dressed! Avoid dark clothing and strongly scented soaps. Apparently that’s what they’re most attracted to. Who knew?!

WANT HELP STAYING COOL? GET OUT YOUR LAWN MOWER…
I recently received the following question.
Dave - In an effort to make our a/c unit less conspicuous in the backyard my wife has allowed plants to grow up around it. I tried to tell her that this is potentially bad for the unit but she doesn’t agree.
We’ve agreed to let you decide. Help!
John in Lithia Springs
So, first of all – this is what I really love, the entire sanctity of a marriage hinging on my word. Sorry wife, I’m on John’s side on this one and here’s why.
Your a/c unit needs to be able to breathe. It takes fresh air in on the sides and exhausts hot air out of the top. It also needs room to be services and washed.
Therefore your unit should be clear of any obstructions, from plants to more permanent structures like a fence or your house for at least 18” on every side.
Not only that, but in case someone thinks you should build a deck over the unit, there should be at least 5 ft. of clearance on the top of the unit as well.
So John, keep the area around your a/c unit clean and clear of debris. If you want to make your wife happy, feel free to plant and maintain some nice shrubbery about 3 ft. away from the unit.
Just make sure you leave room for the service man to get to your unit. Also leave room for your tent so that you will have a place to sleep.
