big Thank You to Adrian Prather and Natalie Muir for organizing two recent community events.

Adrian in his usual style gave us a children’s Valentine’s Day party that was a big success and created more than a few long lasting memories. Natalie organized an evening with our Gwinnett County police to review neighborhood safety best practices.

A tip of the hat to those who participated in making these events meaningful.

Pamela Brazell continues to do great work each month as Neely News editor. A lot goes into each month’s edition, not the least of which is reminding the HOA president for a timely submission. Many hands make light work and Pamela would certainly appreciate some assistance. Please reach out to her directly if you are interested and able to assist.

There are a few items I’d like to address based on phone calls and emails I received. Both matters come down to a common focus, the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like others to treat you. One item that repeatedly comes up is street parking. Figuratively speaking, there are about two places in the

entire neighborhood where a car can be parked and a driver adequately see the road ahead to maneuver with absolute safety, and there are literally dozens of places where a parked car represents a real obstacle and a blind head-to-head situation. There have been at least two avoidable accidents in the neighborhood related to poorly positioned vehicles. Please be aware of where you, your visitors, and your contractors park and encourage them to make good choices. The second matter I hear a lot about is people letting their pets relieve themselves in other people’s yards. This activity is wrong on so many levels and defies explanation.

Please be courteous to your neighbors and encourage others to do the same.

From our last board meeting, the board approved new blocks for the swim team to hopefully be installed ahead of the new season. The old blocks had exceeded their useful life, and the deck mounts created unsuitable conditions for the swimmers.

The board looks forward to a 5-0 season!

winnett County Police and other authorities agree that Flock cameras are not only a great tool at solving crimes, but also act as an excellent deterrent for crime. Neely Farm HOA installed our three Flock cameras in spring 2020. Two are located at the entrance and exit to the neighborhood and a third is at the River Park. To better assist the police with expedited investigation, the Neely Farm HOA is helping to collect license plate numbers of homeowner vehicles. Of course, participation is voluntary. If we can identify in Flock the vehicles that are resident owned and therefore “safe”, we can help the police quickly identify license plates that don’t belong. This can be very helpful if a crime is committed and critical if the investigation is urgent.

Please consider voluntarily registering your license plates on neelyfarm.net to better assist with police investigation. After logging on your neelyfarm.net account you will see Quick Links on the home page. Click on “Register Vehicle License Plates for FLOCK”. This will take you to a special Flock website page and allow you to register your household vehicles on a Safe List. Thousands of cars drive through our neighborhood each month. Identifying “safe” vehicles helps to make Flock an even better tool at solving crime.

Happy 2nd Birthday to our FLOCK cameras

L

ate fall 2019 the NF HOA approved the investment in license plate reader (LPR) cameras. The contract was signed in early 2020 and installation occurred in March. After multiple events over the years of criminal trespassing, theft from cars, stolen vehicles and attempted burglaries, neighborhood security was ranked high as a concern by Neely Farm residents.

We now have a total of three Flock cameras in Neely Farm. There is one camera at the entrance, one at the River Park and one capturing license plates as they exit the neighborhood. All three cameras are solar powered. They capture still images of license plates. The images are stored for only 30 days.

The purpose of the LPR camera system is a tool to aid the police in the investigation of a crime. The camera system is NOT actively monitored at ANY time. It is NOT intended for security purposes and should NOT be relied on as a single source of surveillance in our community.

Access to Flock camera images is primarily for the police. If you are the victim of a crime and think Flock can help with the police investigation, please let them know that your neighborhood has three Flock cameras. You should notify the Neely Farm HOA so that they may coordinate with the police if necessary. Any other access to this information must be pursuant to a subpoena or a court order.

S NEELY FARM CHAMPION SWIMMERS

I

n mid-March, two swimmers from Neely Farm will go to Northern California to compete for a chance to play for the US National Water Polo team. They are Frankie and MJ Arendale. You probably saw some water polo in the Olympics. It is where people dressed as swimmers wear bonnets and play a game that is sort of a mashup between soccer, basketball, and wrestling. Now add water.

Our Neely Farm swimmer’s journey to Northern California began last October at Dynamo Swim Club in Chamblee. USA Water Polo officials came to town and hosted a camp where they put those enrolled through drills and tests to see who would be best suited to make it into the Olympic Development Program (ODP). The next step in the ODP pipeline, was a regional tournament hosted in Greensboro, N.C. The players chosen at the Dynamo clinic were placed on teams representing the Southeast Zone (SEZ). The SEZ has three age groups of both boys and girls teams, with each age group and gender having 2 teams- so 12 teams in total.

In North Carolina, they met up with teams from the Great Lakes, the Northeast, and the Midwest Zones, and played several, tournament style, games. Many scouts were cruising the deck, assessing each players’ fundamentals and technique, knowledge of the game, speed, stamina, and coach-ability.

After returning home we waited for about two weeks before hearing the status of their next step.

Only 6 teams (one per age group) would make it to the finals to be the team representing the Southeast? Two of your Neely Neighbors have made the team!!

The next step is Nationals. Training is hard to come by. Water Polo isn’t incredibly popular in Georgia so, pool time is difficult to score. Iron sharpens iron and competition drives greatness, and since there isn’t much in Atlanta, trips to Florida become almost routine. Frankie is on the developmental girls Southeast Zone Team and MJ is on the cadet girls Southeast Zone Team.

Ready to compete against Southern Pacific, PacNW, Hawaii, and Southwest Zones, fighting for the chance to make it to yet another stop on the pipeline to the National team. NTSC. About 40 players are chosen nationally, from each age group and gender, to attend National Team Selection Camp.

Hosted in Irvine, at the USAWP headquarters, NTSC is an intense 4day camp that sorts out players who will be chosen to represent the US and travel abroad to play in Barcelona, Budapest, and Athens, Greece.

Last year MJ made it to Nationals and Frankie made it to NTSC. What will happen this year?

We don’t know! But we will have a fun time watching them try their hardest to go for the gold!

Soon we plan to have a pdf available for those who want to update their directory with a hard copy, you can log into the website. This pdf is an effort to maintain parity with the old directory and update the directory more frequently. As you will see below, it can be downloaded to iphones and/or can be printed for those who want hard copies.

The information has been submitted by individual members for neighborhood use only. Included in a pdf will be names, addresses and phone numbers. This pdf update will NOT have email addresses.

Email addresses in addition to other information are available on the website. Please review your information to make sure that it is up to date, and you are comfortable with your information going out to the neighborhood through the website and soon to be available by pdf in the next couple of months. The Neely Farm Homeowners Association website also can be searched by street name.

You can then make your own hard copy of the pdf of the most current directory information. Note, also that those with an Apple product (iphone, ipad, etc.) can download a pdf directly to iBooks. This pdf will be updated on a regular basis, probably quarterly.

Destination Spotlight: Australia!

A

ustralia is OPEN!! After being closed for almost two years, Australia has re-opened its doors to American tourists.

Having come so far, you’ll want to give yourself at least two weeks to explore. While Australia is a year-round destination, September and October -- spring in the Southern Hemisphere -- are the best months to visit.

Top on your list should be seeing Australia’s wildlife and one of the best places for wildlife is the aptly named Kangaroo Island. Rebounding rapidly from the devastating bushfires of late 2019 and early 2020, the island is devoid of predators and full of life once more. Kangaroos

get top billing, but they’re joined by koalas, echidnas, wallabies and many other species.

The beloved Southern Ocean Lodge, lost in the fires, is rebuilding and set to open by early 2023. To get to the island, off the coast of Adelaide in South Australia, you’ll want to cross through the Barossa Valley wine region. Just 25 minutes outside Adelaide, it’s home to numerous wineries, including the legendary Penfolds.

Western Australia very much resembles the American Wild West, and is known to Australians as the Last Frontier. The capital, Perth, is one of the most isolated cities in the world. The Kimberley region is the only place outside Africa where you’ll find pink diamonds and baobab trees.

On the east coast of Australia, you’ll find such marvels as the Wolgan Valley -- sort of an Aussie’s answer to the Grand Canyon -- the Great Barrier Reef and Lizard Island. Though the northern part of the reef has been depleted, it is still a wonder. And, Lizard Island is home to a research center where reef restoration efforts are based.

Slightly smaller than the much-celebrated Sydney, Melbourne became a boomtown during a Victorian-era gold rush and was once Australia’s capital (Canberra took over in 1927).

Today it remains a financial center as well as a

melting pot of cultures, with large numbers of immigrants from Asia and Europe. Melbourne is home to the Australian Open and is the gateway to Phillip Island, famed for its nightly procession of little penguins.

For those who have been to Australia before and want to uncover the hidden gems, Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory (NT) contains Aboriginal rock art that dates back over 50,000 years. The NT is also home to Uluru, aka Ayers Rock, one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in the world.

Do yourself a favor and visit Australia at least once in your life. Yes, it’s a long way to go, but you will be rewarded with a land like no other on Earth, with unique wildlife and endless beauty in a place that’s as large as the continental U.S. with less than a tenth of the population.

Australians are friendly and there is something for every type of traveler to enjoy, from the wines of the Barossa Valley to the Great Ocean Road to outdoor adventures in Tasmania. You won’t be disappointed!

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). For Lemon Filling: In a medium saucepan, whisk together 1 cup sugar, flour, cornstarch, and salt. Stir in water, lemon juice and lemon zest. Cook over mediumhigh heat, stirring frequently, until mixture comes to a boil. Stir in butter.

Place egg yolks in a small bowl and gradually whisk in 1/2 cup of hot sugar mixture. Whisk egg yolk mixture back into remaining sugar mixture.

Bring to a boil and cook while stirring constantly until thick. Remove from heat. Pour filling into baked pastry shell. To Make Meringue: In a large glass or metal bowl, whip egg whites until foamy. Add sugar gradually, and continue to whip until stiff peaks form. Spread meringue over pie, sealing the edges at the crust.

Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes, or until meringue is golden brown.

DIRECTIONS Pour 1/4 to 1/2 inch of sugar onto a small, shallow plate.

Run one of the lime quarters around the rim of each cocktail glass, then dip the glasses into the sugar to rim; set aside.

Squeeze all of the lime quarters into a sturdy glass pitcher. Toss the juiced limes into the pitcher along with the mint, strawberries, and 1 cup of sugar. Crush the fruits together with a muddler to release the juices from the strawberries and the oil from the mint leaves. Stir in the rum and club soda until the sugar has dissolved.

Pour into the sugared glasses over ice cubes to serve.

umans have used herbs since early times for medicinal purposes, for flavoring food, and for fragrance. Their magical properties are entwined in the lore of many cultures and their flavor has added distinctive character to numerous regional dishes.

Many modern medicines include plant parts from herbs in either a natural or synthesized state. And there is a growing field of research in pharmacognosy, as scientists look again at herbal remedies.

Regardless of how you decide to use them, herbs can make an exciting addition to any landscape. They can be used formally in an herb garden or informally mixed into beds of annuals, perennials or shrubs. Herb flowers and foliage provide a beautiful palette of color and variation in texture and form. Herbs also lend themselves well to small containers such as window boxes or whisky barrels.

If you’re going to grow herbs, choose a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. A soil pH range of 6 to 7.5 is fine for most herbs, although some, such as rosemary or lavender, prefer the pH slightly higher, in the 7.5 range.

Herbs do well in average soil but prefer, as most plants do, well-drained, loamy, or sandy conditions. It’s important to test your soil prior to planting to determine the actual pH and then add the appropriate amount of dolomitic lime to adjust it. Most herbs are not heavy feeders, and a moderate amount of fertilizer will provide all the nutrition they need. Some herbs, such as basil, chives, and parsley, may require additional fertilizer since they are often heavily harvested.

When preparing the herb bed, work generous amounts of compost or rotted manure into the native soil to a depth of 12 inches.

BASIL is one of several herbs recommended for gardening this spring. It's an annual that prefers sun and moderate moisture.

It is a great idea to plant in raised beds, especially if drainage is a concern. Raised beds can be constructed of rocks, landscape timbers, railroad ties, old tires, or other materials.

Pinestraw or bark mulch around your herb plants will help maintain even moisture around the root system. It also helps to discourage weeds and provides a layer of protection from extreme temperatures.

2. MINT is a perennial that prefers sun or partial shade and semimoist soil. Plant in a container to keep it from spreading. Mint can be used in desserts, teas, and as a garnish.

3. YARROW is a perennial that prefers sun and moderate moisture. It may need staking. A nonculinary herb, it can be used fresh or dried in arrangements.

Most herbs are fairly drought tolerant and require water only during drier periods.

Herbs grown in containers and raised planters will require more irrigation than those grown directly in the ground.

4. SCENTED GERANIUM is a perennial,

While there are many herbs that can be planted, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension offers the following list for beginning gardeners. These seven herbs do well in the Southern U.S. and are easy to grow. As you gain confidence as an herb gardener, other varieties can be added.
