President’s Message
Fellow CCS Residents, H
appy summer! I hope you are enjoying the warm weather, time away from school, and our fabulous community facilities. Summer is off to a great start in CCS!
Thank you!
Ɂ Thank you to Kathy Driscoll for yet another fabulous “Concert in the Park” on June 10! We look forward to the encore this fall.
Ɂ Thank you to Meredith Brohm, Lindsay Ryan, and the entire swim committee for a fabulous swim season. Go Sharks!
Pool
Ɂ Please be vigilant about pool safety. Drowning is quiet and fast (under a minute). We have already had several close calls at the pool this summer. The lifeguards are helpful, but it is unwise to depend on them completely with lives at stake.
Ɂ Parents and caregivers, please remember to have your young children who are not yet toilet trained in swim diapers. It is not fair to your neighbors when we must close the pool because of fecal contamination.
Dogs
Ɂ Please remember and remind your guests to pick up after your dog when walking around the neighborhood. My wife slipped on a piece of dog excrement in the street and nearly fell in it! We have plastic dog bags and trash cans placed throughout the community for your convenience. There is no excuse.
Ɂ We have had a few incidents of dogs escaping from their yards and appearing threatening to neighbors. If you have a dog, it is your responsibility to keep it on a leash or contained on your property so that it does not become a threat to your neighbors.
There was recently a dog-mauling incident in Foxworth that put someone in the hospital. We do not want that.
Safety
Ɂ The age to drive golf carts is 12 with a licensed driver over the age of 18 in the front seat. We have seen children as young as six driving golf carts on our streets, and recently had a golf cart overturn with children driving it. This is not safe. Please stop this before a tragedy occurs.
Ɂ We have lots of children in our community who are out of school for the summer and enjoying the great outdoors walking, biking, and playing. We love to see this! Please remember this and drive with caution, observing speed limits and stop signs. Remind your guests and any young drivers in your household about this, as well.

Ɂ If you will be out of town for an extended period, please consider registering your trip with the JCPD. They will be able to swing by your house to make sure all is well, which has the double benefit of increasing the police presence in our community.
Sending lots of good wishes to you and yours. Cheers!

MEETING SCHEDULE
Meetings are held at the HOA Office at 4:30pm. No Meeting in July
General Manager's Letter
Happy 4th of July! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer.
I’m glad everyone is enjoying the pool at the Rec Center. Below are a few pool reminders for the remainder of the season. Do not place the chaise/chairs into the kids splash area, they tend to scratch up the pool surface as well as scratch the chairs and cause rusting.
Parents, please remind your children that they must get out of the pool during the lifeguard breaks. It is a safety issue for children to be in the pool unattended. It is also a good time for the little ones to have a bathroom break and time for the adults to enjoy the pool without getting splashed or interrupted in the lap lane. Also keep in mind that all those in need of swim diapers must wear one at all times.
Regarding the Rec Center parking lot PLEASE do not park your car or golf cart in the handicap spot or the stripped space next to it. Both of these spaces are intended for handicap parking for folks that have the special designation placard or license plate.
We also ask that you do not park in the circle. Folks have difficulty driving around the vehicle or are forced to back down the circle which can be troublesome especially during swim team drop off.
Outdoor Music
While enjoying backyard activities or hosting parties, please be mindful of the noise level of any outdoor music and / or noise. The Johns Creek noise ordinance requires a lower decibel level from 11:00pm – 7:00am. Johns Creek PD has the sole discretion to determine if noise /music exceeds the proper limit.
Trash Can Policy
We have received an increased number of complaints regarding residents’ trash cans. Some trash cans are being put out far too early and some are being left out far too long. Trash cans must be placed out no earlier than the night before the pick-up day or the morning of the pick-up day – no earlier; the trash can must then be taken back from the curb to their designated storage place as soon as possible after trash pick-up but before midnight the day of trash pick-up. Lastly, please be reminded to place your cans at the curb not on the street.

Country Club of the South // countryclubofthesouth.org 3
Dear Residents,
Country Club of the South continues to be a special residential community in the Southeast. We can be grateful to reside in a gated community that continues to maintain high standards that benefit all residents.
As a neighborhood, the HOA Board has invested in the upgrades of all entrances and created a first-class recreation center as well as numerous infrastructure projects and continued maintenance i.e., road paving, storm drain repairs and maintenance and an updated club gate.
It is remarkable that our community is now over 36 years old. Because of this, and to maintain our high standards, it will require all residents’ attention. We have just finished a very difficult period of bad weather and our community has experienced considerable damage to our landscaping and common areas.
Now that summer is here, many residents have or are currently addressing their property maintenance. Last month’s Resident Review listed the maintenance standards required by all residents. This letter is a reminder to ALL property owners that it is time to review your
property, especially at curbside, and take the necessary action to meet our HOA Standards.
Please consider your irrigation, mulch and/ or pinestraw in all landscape beds, the condition of your turf and weeds, fertilize as needed and removal of dead trees and shrubbery. In addition to landscaping, attention should also address power washing, painting, trash can placement, general cleanup and other requirements outlined in the CCS Design Standards. As a reminder, any yard art, statuary or signage must have HOA/ASC approval.

PROCEDURES AND POLICIES:
There are absolutely no contractors allowed on property on Sundays regardless of interior or exterior work. Stepahnie can be reached at 770-998-0131 (office) and Brian may be reached at 770-998-0131 (office).
Please be reminded that no contractors/vendors will be admitted into the community unless residents have registered them into the dwellingLIVE system. If your contractor/vendor arrives at the Service Gate and you have not registered them into dwellingLIVE they will be directed to the HOA Parking Lot to contact the resident and request to be put into the system to gain admittance to the community.
All Contractors must provide a valid Drivers License for entry. All contractors must be off property by 7:00 pm.

Did you know that John’s Creek Police will provide a “Vacation Watch.” Sign up at Johns Creek Police Department P2C (johnscreekga.gov)
Personal Safety & The Club Gate
I received a couple of reports of residents stopping and approaching vehicles at the Club Gate that have tried to “piggy-back” into the community behind their vehicle. I am asking residents not to exit their
vehicle to approach these types of vehicles. In most cases, it is simply someone following their GPS that led them to our Club Gate. However, it is best to remain in your vehicle, call one of the gatehouses, inform the gate attendant of the following: 1) That you are at the Club Gate; 2) Someone attempted to piggy-back into the community behind you but you stopped to prevent it from happening; 3) Please send patrol to the Club Gate to engage the driver.
Drivers And Walkers –Shared Consideration
We have received reports of vehicles exceeding our posted community speed limit of 25 mph by 1020+ miles per hour. This is unacceptable and must change. Some of the violators reported have been resident youth.
Drivers, please slow down and be considerate of walkers since we do not have sidewalks. We have more youth on the roads now that school is out. Violations will be emailed to violators. When a citation is received, there will be a 10-day period for resident violators to pay the fine or reply to schedule an appeal of the citation before other consequences follow.
Noise Complaints And Mutual Consideration
May& June was a time for graduation celebrations for many families and to kick off the summer season. Families should be able to reasonably enjoy these times without receiving calls regarding noise complaints in the early evening hours before 10pm or 11pm. The families who are celebrating must also consider their neighbors who may be elderly or who want to go to bed by 11pm and not hear extremely loud music outside their window.
Always consider your neighbor…
Ding-Dong-Ditch On The Rise
Do you know where your youth is after 12 midnight? We have received more reports of youth ringing resident doorbells and/or knocking on resident
doors after midnight and running away. A couple of youth caught on resident cameras look like they may be as young as 12 years old.
Please remember that we have elderly residents living in our community and when this is done at one of their homes, it causes quite a scare for them and could result in a medical emergency.
While this may seem like fun to many youths, it is a nuisance to most residents.
Rise In Invalid Driver’s Licenses
As I mentioned in a previous article, we continue to experience a rise in invalid driver’s licenses at the gates from contractors, various food delivery services and even Uber and Lyft drivers. Unfortunately, this may mean that a resident calling for services may have to drive to a gate to pick up their food or reschedule the service.
Suggestion: when placing calls for whatever services you need, mention to the person on the phone that you live in a gated community and all drivers must have a valid driver’s license and to have it ready to show the gate attendant.
To keep our community safe, we only allow those individuals with a valid driver’s license to enter and drive on the community roads.
Monthly Visitor Screening In dwellinglive “Comparison”
(Visitors added by gate attendants vs. residents: April 2022 vs. April 2023; May 2022 vs. May 2023)
To reduce the overall delays in visitor screening, mistakes made by gate attendants, calls made and received by gate attendants from residents must drastically decrease.
The comparison between April 2022 vs. April 2023 is as follows:
In April 2022, gate attendants made or received calls at the gates to add 10,955 resident visitors into dwellingLIVE for residents.
In April 2023, gate attendants made or received calls
Residents’ Review // July 2023 6
Brian Evans & Reggie Stargell
at the gates to add 12,292 resident visitors into dwellingLIVE for residents.
***Gate attendants received 1,337 MORE calls from residents in April 2023 than in April 2022 to add personnel to their list.
The comparison between May 2022 vs. May 2023 is as follows:
In May 2022, gate attendants made or received calls at the gates to add 13,066 resident visitors into dwellingLIVE for residents.
In May 2023, gate attendants made or received calls at the gates to add 15,938 resident visitors into dwellingLIVE for residents.
***Gate attendants received 2,872 MORE calls from residents in May 2023 than in May 2022 to add personnel to their list.
The goals are to reduce the number of calls made to residents and received from residents by the gate attendants by pleading for more resident participation in using dwellingLIVE. This helps to reduce backups at the gates, reduce frustrations for residents as well as the gate attendants and to ultimately maintain better access control at the gates.
We encourage all residents to enter visitors, contractors/vendors, landscapers, delivery services, driving services on their guest list in dwellingLIVE. Please download the dwellingLIVE App.
If anyone needs help with using dwellingLIVE, please contact me, and if necessary, I will come to your home to assist.
Dogs
We have many residents with dogs, and we also have residents who are afraid of dogs for a variety of reasons. For some people, seeing a dog loose or not on a leash can be very scary.
It is imperative that residents with dogs are always considerate to their neighbors. When residents are out in the community, they should have their dogs leashed so they can be easily controlled. Different things trigger different dogs for a wide variety of reasons, so it does not matter how harmless one may believe their dog to be, always consider and be prepared for a worst-case scenario.

CCS Shark Swim Team
It’s hard to believe that our summer swim season is already over. By the time you read this, we will have competed in five regular swim meets as well as the ASA Championships at Georgia Tech.
Our team had an excellent season! All of our swimmers worked hard and improved their strokes in the pool. None of this would have been possible without the commitment from our CCS Swim parents. They have volunteered numerous hours to make our swim meets a success. Thank you!
We also need to extend a huge thank you to our talented team of coaches. Summer Swim league coaching has more to do with the love of the sport and swimmers than the paycheck. They dedicate a large portion of their summer to guarantee our swimmers not only improve their strokes, but also have a great time doing it.
Our coaches will continue to offer private swim lessons to residents at the Rec Center throughout the summer. Please reach out if you are interested.

THE FOURTH OF JULY
We celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of July every year. We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation.
But July 4, 1776 wasn’t the day that the Continental Congress decided to declare independence (they did that on July 2, 1776).
It wasn’t the day we started the American Revolution either (that had happened back in April 1775).
And it wasn’t the day Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence (that was in June 1776). Or the date on which the Declaration was delivered to Great Britain (that didn’t happen until November 1776). Or the date it was signed (that was August 2, 1776).
So what did happen on July 4, 1776?
The Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. They’d been working on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2nd and finally agreed on all of the edits and changes.
July 4, 1776, became the date that was included on the Declaration of Independence, and the fancy handwritten copy that was signed in August (the copy now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.) It’s also the date that was printed on the Dunlap Broadsides, the original printed copies of the Declaration that were circulated throughout the new nation. So when people thought of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 was the date they remembered.
In contrast, we celebrate Constitution Day on September 17th of each year, the anniversary of the date the Constitution was signed, not
Residents’ Review // July 2023 12
THE STORY OF
the anniversary of the date it was approved. If we’d followed this same approach for the Declaration of Independence we’d being celebrating Independence Day on August 2nd of each year, the day the Declaration of Independence was signed!
How did the Fourth of July become a national holiday?
For the first 15 or 20 years after the Declaration was written, people didn’t celebrate it much on any date. It was too new and too much else was happening in the young nation. By the 1790s, a time of bitter partisan conflicts, the Declaration had become controversial. One party, the
Democratic-Republicans, admired Jefferson and the Declaration. But the other party, the Federalists, thought the Declaration was too French and too anti-British, which went against their current policies.
By 1817, John Adams complained in a letter that America seemed uninterested in its past. But that would soon change.
After the War of 1812, the Federalist party began to come apart and the new parties of the 1820s and 1830s all considered themselves inheritors of Jefferson and the DemocraticRepublicans. Printed copies of the Declaration began to circulate again,
all with the date July 4, 1776, listed at the top. The deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams on July 4, 1826, may even have helped to promote the idea of July 4 as an important date to be celebrated.
Celebrations of the Fourth of July became more common as the years went on and in 1870, almost a hundred years after the Declaration was written, Congress first declared July 4 to be a national holiday as part of a bill to officially recognize several holidays, including Christmas. Further legislation about national holidays, including July 4.

A Word from the Chief
As the temperature gets warmer in the summer, so does the potential for criminal activity in our city. If you go out of town, please schedule a Vacation Watch. If you see anything suspicious or something that looks out of the ordinary, please call us to come and check it out.
When you come home from work or vacation, please secure your vehicle, and do not leave any personal belongings in it. If you are away for an extended period, please make sure your residence is locked, your alarm / cameras are working, the exterior of your dwelling is well lit at night, and your neighbors are frequently checking your mail and the perimeter of your home to make sure everything is secure. These are just a few things you can do to help us make sure you and your family are safe, your possessions are protected, and the quality of life in our city is highly maintained for all who live, work, play, and visit our very supportive Johns Creek community.
Blessed, honored, and grateful to serve you and to work alongside a dedicated and passionate team who protects and engages our citizens with a true purpose and mission of putting others before self.

WANT HELP STAYING COOL? GET OUT YOUR LAWN MOWER…
I recently received the following question.
Dave - In an effort to make our a/c unit less conspicuous in the backyard my wife has allowed plants to grow up around it. I tried to tell her that this is potentially bad for the unit but she doesn’t agree.
We’ve agreed to let you decide. Help! John in Lithia Springs
So, first of all – this is what I really love, the entire sanctity of a marriage hinging on my word.
Sorry wife, I’m on John’s side on this one and here’s why.
Your a/c unit needs to be able to breathe. It takes fresh air in on the sides and exhausts hot air out of the top. It also needs room to be services and washed.
Therefore your unit should be clear of any obstructions, from plants to more permanent structures like a fence or your house for at least 18” on every side.
Not only that, but in case someone thinks you should build a deck over the unit, there should be at least 5 ft. of clearance on the top of the unit as well.
So John, keep the area around your a/c unit clean and clear of debris. If you want to make your wife happy, feel free to plant and maintain some nice shrubbery about 3 ft. away from the unit.
Just make sure you leave room for the service man to get to your unit. Also leave room for your tent so that you will have a place to sleep.

Scouting for Summer Pests!
Warmer temperatures mean summer fun, but they also bring pests to the garden and landscape. Fortunately, gardeners and homeowners spend more time outside tending to things this time of year and are able to spot some of these common pests before they become a major issue! Here are just a few to defend against.
Nothing is more heart breaking than tending to summer vegetable plants and then having them ravaged in just a matter of days. While humidity in the South is inviting for many diseases, especially on tomato plants, one thing gardeners can control is the tomato hornworm. This fat, green worm looks like something out of Alice in Wonderland, and it is anything but cute. Just one or two per tomato plant can strip it of its leaves in a matter of days. Rather than using a chemical, these guys can be plucked right off the plant by hand and then left for the birds to enjoy. Other than humans, some natural enemies to tomato hornworm are wasps and praying mantis, so you can often depend on nature to take its course. To prevent damage by tomato hornworm, gardeners must scout plants carefully every few days, as the pest’s green color blends right in with leaves. A full sized tomato hornworm is typically an inch and a half to two inches long. If infestations are great,Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) sprays are acceptable for organic control.
A favorite plant for Japanese beetles are roses, but this pest will feed on many ornamental plants and even trees throughout the summer. They’re easily identified by their iridescent green color, and the damage they cause is hard to ignore. They eat leaves down to just the veins, leaving them looking skeletonized. The effectiveness of using the yellow Japanese beetle traps is debated because, while trapping some, it may also draw a large, unwanted population to the landscape. Place the traps away from susceptible plants, and remove the trap once it’s got activity on it. Chemical control is possible to suppress them, but elimination is difficult. Read and follow pesticide labels for application amounts and timing to mitigate the risk to other, desirable insects.
Noticing yellow or browning in spots of the lawn, or perhaps soft, spongy spots? This can be damage by chipmunks, birds, and especially moles, which feed on earthworms underground. Most creatures dig up spots in the grass, but moles tunneling underneath certainly affect larger areas in the lawn by pushing soil up! Their tunnels can span an entire yard. Reducing watering and stomping the tunnels down to redirect moles are often effective methods, but are ones that need constant attention. Traps are available to stop them from tunneling, but caution must be used and the homeowner educated so as to not harm or injure the wrong animal.
April and May brought thousands of questions into county extension offices statewide about strange, toothpick-like growths coming out of the trunks of many trees- commonly figs, crape myrtles and maples. Ambrosia beetle bores into unhealthy, often weakened and thin-barked trees around the turn of spring, and what is seen along the trunk is the sawdust kicked out of the holes they’ve bored. Over the summer, a second generation will emerge from affected tree trunks to scout out more trees to continue their lifecycle. Once this damage is spotted, it is important to cut away the affected limbs or trunks and remove and either bag or burn them. Proper tree care, health, and maintenance are the best defenses against problems like this. Certified arborists can also be consulted about preventative sprays for vulnerable trees.
And finally, there’s not a person on this planet who cares formosquitoes as they try and enjoy summer fun! Keys to reducing mosquitoes are eliminating standing water in common areas and in clogged gutters and using Mosquito Dunks in desired water, like ponds and birdbaths. They’re deemed safe for birds and fish. Consider an oscillating fan while relaxing outdoors. And rather than treating your entire outdoor area, treat yourself with repellents like Off, Deet or Skin So Soft. Lastly, make some adjustments to how you get dressed! Avoid dark clothing and strongly scented soaps. Apparently that’s what they’re most attracted to. Who knew?!
