The Haven Project Broken Things Fixing Broken People: 82% of all disused furniture ends in landfill, accounting for 42% of all bulk waste, only 0.3% of which is salvaged, despite being highly recyclable. Fast furniture, much like fast fashion, has been described by WWF as decades behind other industries. The Haven Project offers a solution, collecting the waste free of charge and offering the homeless, ex prisoners and young offenders a fresh start. 85% of juvenile offenders, 55% of ex prisoners and 51% of the homeless are classified as ‘functionally illiterate’ (average reading age below 7). Furthermore, 70% of juvenile offenders, 68% of the homeless and 55-60% of ex prisoners suffer with moderate to severe mental illness. It must be understood that like the waste furniture, these people are merely damaged and not broken. By retrofitting and breathing new life into the due to be demolished 1930s Dex Garage, The Haven Project offers education on literacy and NVQs in furniture making, informal counselling, residency, incubation businesses and another chance.

Retaining pre-existing frame accounting for 48-66% of a building’s embodied carbon (Anderson, J. and Moncaster, A., 2020). Expressing and patching existing framework, concrete floor decking with Kelm concrete finish, preventing further degradation. Beam and column that connects to exterior is wrapped internally preventing cold bridge.

PilgrimageCrematorium within The Dene: Current Design Project.

Jesmond Dene is one of the key locations of historic pilgrimage within Europe. Embedding the Pilgrimage crematorium within its context by understanding the religious, industrial and public history of the Dene, using the urban and free-form grain to inform the site master plan. Water is key throughout the project, from Aquamation (water cremation) to guiding the procession through the ceremony; water is a prevalent symbol within most religious beliefs, representing reflection and purification. Aquamation within the Christian religion can be a powerful representation of the circle of life, from baptism to cremation.

The building spaces have been designed through the eyes of the chief mourner and their personal pilgrimage of grief, this story told within the rendering techniques, following the principle mourner in green, the surrounding people progressively regaining clarity on their return to site.

Museum of Extinct Species: We are custodians, the Earth is our gift, we celebrate, protect and learn from what has been given. It is our task to provide something relevant and significant in our time. It is our duty to leave future generations equipped to carry forward the torch.

The museum explores non-conventional ways to display artefacts that will evoke an emotional response over other static representation; atmospheres ranging from full sensory overloads, deliberately uncomfortable, to happiness and relief as the visitor can see the organisations that are actively working to protect our natural environment. Alongside this mix of emotions, each room deliberately contrasts with another, leaving the visitor uncertain about what will come next.

The museum aims to re-assert phrases that we have come to take for granted, phrases such as ‘habitat loss’, ‘extinction’ and ‘climate change’. Taking inspiration from the Jewish Museum in Berlin there are strategically placed break zones where visitors can rest but not leave, acting as places of contemplation and given the same importance as the exhibits themselves.

Cohabitation 2020, a world smaller than ever, an ever-growing and ever-ageing population, young and old divided, ‘boomer’, ‘snowflake’, ‘cancel culture’, a war on community, the fight for separation. Solution living - a cohabitation living arrangement that brings the young and old together, helping to reduce isolation within the elderly population, giving guidance, wisdom and experience to the young, creating a unique community.

Communication Style:

Influenced by the artist John Martins, known for his exceptional depictions of apocalyptic narratives, directly linking to this project narrative ‘a world of division’. The project aims to fuse art and architecture highlighting the unfriendly nature of our current social norms and the importance of community. The exterior rendering is bleak, contrasting to the interior style, bright, open and friendly.

The building is opposing the site terrain, emerging proud. The repetition of three is relative to the number of communities and the number of people from each generation.
