This portfolio consists of selected work from when I pursued my architecture Masters degree and while practicing architecture professionally. Every project done allowed me to face new challenges and for me, were considered chapters of learning; each chapter came with its own set of problems and rules. With this in mind, I’ve developed a stronger interests and become very intrigued with the exploration of architectural strategies and materials. To me, architecture exists not only within buildings. During my free time, I’m passionate about the expression of ideas and forms through conceptualisation, the creation of art installations and furniture design-and-making.

AFZ Bildungszentrum wayfinding and public furniture

Anton Fingerle Zentrum is an education center built in 80s, which has gone through many refurbishments Leitelemente for new functions. It has been difficult for admissioners to navitage to the administration department in this large complex. First given assignment is to provide students an orientation and navigation from the lobby to respective faculties. The second assignment is to replace the old steel benches in the lobby with formal seatings. The column grids in lobby has inpired circular design with the columns as the focus of the ring, while some some float in between the focusses. Each ring entity is carefully subtracted out to create seatings and counter spaces with varying level of extraversion.

neighborhood kindergarten

The windbreaks of the farmland surrounds the kindergarden, giving a reserved and mysterious presence.

The kindergarten took the centre position and divides the land into two open fields, with one side overlooking the existing playground.

The drive of the project is keeping nature. The planning was done carefully to keep the surrounding trees protected. The kindergarten has a wooden exterior.

Part of the building hugs the hilly topography giving the user groups the advantage of being closer to the landscape.

The spaces were planned for 100 children of 2 different age groups. The ground floor caters for 4 groups of children aged 0-3, while 2 groups of children aged 4-6 are on the first floor. Both floors feature wide play floor space for kids to hang their cloaks and space to run around.

K i Ta Frankenwinheim neighborhood kindergarten

The existing kindergarten building was an accommodation building for the nuns in the older days. A few years later, the kindergarten requires an extension for two new groups. The main interior space features a deep cabinet wall consisting a series of pocket spaces. The main intention is to house services that run along the building and not hinder the circulation.

The pocket spaces are a workstation, kitchen, service room, cloak spaces and play spaces for 2 groups of children (age 4-6).

Wohnhaus Scheller

multi family housing

Wohnhaus Scheller is owned by a family who wished for a future retirement home with investment returns.

The product is a multi families housing that consists of 5 flats. 2 flats on each floor and the top floor occupies a penthouse. The flats are put up for leasing while waiting for their retirement age to move in, and in hope that their children could live together under one roof.

Walking around the old town of Volkach, one will instantly be captivated by the bright colours of the old shops and living quarters. They usually have straight-lined windows and different plaster textures on their facade. Inspired by the context, the facade of the house is a bold interpretation of disarray orders.

The windows are a composition of different sizes and heights. The all too commonly seen ‘besenstrich’ texture was done in a vertical direction and the colour is the result of a special mix of turquoise colour. The combination is a striking and harmonious addition to the townscape of Volkach.

Located in downtown of Singapore, the urban style bungalow represents the interpretation of 21st century architecture contrasting in a 90’s style house neighbourhood. The 2 1/2 storey in-situ concrete envelope has a reddish rustic concrete roof finish with copper corten steel paint forming part of the facade. Architectural details of the house were designed with great attention, which reflected in every house components from roof, door, light box to gate latch.

The client’s family love being in the nature. Thus, half the 3000 sq.m land are reserved for landscape.

The house took of the land topography with curvy concrete roof and spilt levels floor plan. Steel beam structures of the roof are also reflected in the interior of the house. The exterior of the houses is claded with granite stones, while the canopy is claded with pre-oxidized copper panels that changes colour due to climate. From railing to swimming pool, each components of the house are given with great details.

SONGHENG ASSOCIATION tracing back to roots

The shophouse on 11 Purvis Street is a meeting place for Chinese migrants who came to Singapore since 1940s. Today, the association functions as communal space for regular members. Therefore, the association called for makeover to attract new members.

The proposed design reveals the hidden beauty of old shophouse by exposing the existing roof structures and redefining spaces to the chronology of chinese migration from China to Singapore. The newly renovated SongHeng association becomes more relevant and informative to new members or guests.

01 | REUSE TIRE NETWORK

REUSE TIRE NETWORK material network

SUPPORT OF - The starting point is an experimental building project features a food pavilion developed

by Berkely University students led by Kengo Kuma in Hokkaido, Japan. The building aims to interlock locally grown products, the processing, as well as cooking and eating as a collective experience. By that the building manifests a complex network of social and material relationships. This network can be described with the ANT (Actor-Network-Theory), which was developed by Bruno Latour and others. Material actors (e.g. local grown products) as well as human actors (local producers and consumers) form a cohesive network of which the building becomes a part of it.

SUPPORT FOR - The concept of forming a network as an elementary component of the development of an architectural project set the base for a project in Moabit, Berlin. The area has a tradition of housing as well as small to large scale businesses. One of the popular trades in Moabit is car trade which includes car repair, reselling parts and tire change. Tires in particular are example of industry by-products that form complex material and social networks evolve. On the other hand, used tires represent a huge waste problem in the area. With used tires as the only material of focus, hence the project aims to create a Reuse Tire Network (RTN) as part of a car workshop to reuse and recycle used tires. The network attempts to reach out to the local car workshops, Moabit community and creative scene by connecting local demands. Thus the process of re-cycling/up-cycling is becoming a clearly visible, ecological and social task.

Every trade produces has the potential to turn by-products into new resources to fulfil local needs. In Moabit, overproducing of tires from car workshops is a growing concern. Therefore, used tires will be the material of focus of the new network.

SUPPORT STRUCTURE - RTN consist of collective spaces such as tire drop off, retail gallery, media corner, second-hand tire resale, up-cycling workshop and communal kitchen for locals as well as the workers from the surrounding enterprises. The structure is constructed of steel structure with mounted concrete facade panels containing chips of tire rubber. The project sits on the corner of a block next to the river Spree. It stands out because of its unusual facade. At the same time, the facade provides insights into the process of the recycling process. Through this project the recycling process and products become a visble and integral part of the city.

The network consists of 3 main processes; recycling, upcycling and reselling of used tires. It’s spaces are planned in parallel to material flow; drop off/collection, sorting, storing, production, post production to delivery.

Each level support different functions but shares the common spaces and facilities.

ARCHITECTURAL SLOT MACHINE - Budget, Program & Materials are always the conditions that define our projects. In order to break from world of precedents and reference, this studio adapts the concept to that of ‘slot machine’. The task is given to develop a project based on given 3 random PRE-CONDITIONS;- (a) the budget to build the set of parts (b) Eternit as prefab material (c) a site in Berlin. The project treats Eternit as an element of architecture in project for nothing can be taken away and are space defining.

ETERNIT - is also known as fiber cement, is manufacture from composite mixture of Portland cement, cellulose and polymeric fibers and other constituents through ‘Hatsheck Process’. They are easily available in the market and has variety range of fitting parts.

A profile 6 Eternit of 1.097 x 2.5 m cost about 40 Euro, which are very affordable as building material and expected to last at least 50 years. With material budget of 50,000 Euro, the maximum quantity of Eternit parts could be bought are shown in Fig. 2. Different techniques are tested with Eternit and reinforced elements to form wall, floor, beam and columns. They could be serve as structural elements, space defining and also give space quality. We also had discussion with guest Engineer to discuss the possibilities.

REPLICA - Through site investigation, the neighbourhood calls for the need of a communal space for the locals to socialize and a space for local functions. The given site is a private land with large area of buildable open space, and behind the plot is a enclosed public playground. The design strategy is to build a multi purpose hall that looks similar to the existing family house and it is also accessible to the playground. On regular days, it functions as indoor games hall and becomes a lounge space during the winter.

On special occasions, the hall is rent-able for wedding ceremonies or meetings, which bring extra income for the owner. Thus, REPLICA is made into a feasible project that was defined by random requirements on Budget, Material and Site.

01 | THE PRELUDE

THE PRELUDE concert hall for all

MEISTERSINHALLE - The studio brief is based on a competion to build a new concert hall next to Nürnberg concert hall. Meistersinhalle is a heritage building built in the 60s, posed a challenge to make a meaningful connection.

THE PRELUDE - an introductory in a music piece by defnition, is the proposed design strategy. The new concert hall is positioned adjacent to the old concert hall, and created a long glass passage that leads to the park that holds historical importance to the state.

The long passage will serve as a transitional space or an access that reveals both old and new concert hall to public.

The new concert hall is a four stories entity consisting 3 cores;- the big hall, musician hall and hotel with basement car park. Spaces of the building are planned based on user types, access and privacy. Each core are exclusive for guests, musicians and personels. Spaces outside the cores are circulation spaces for public to move around the building. Facade of the concert hall is a concrete shell with vertical openings that allows natural daylight and views to the park. The boutique hotel designed specifically for both musicians and guests to rest, relax and rehearse music. THE PRELUDE concert hall aims to relive again by bringing locas and music enthusiasts closer to the nature and center of culture.

Most of my art installations deal with materials such as fruit wrappers, bamboo, bicycle wheels, grocery bags and even shuttle corks. I’m interested in forms and making from mundane materials. The end results are always unexpected and fascinating. For me, any material has the potential to be a medium of expressions.
