JUNE 6-AUGUST

1, 2026

AGE 18 AND YOUNGER

Free Books. Big Prizes. Summer Reading at Des Moines Public Library

Every summer, Des Moines Public Library invites kids and teens across the city to read, explore, and win. This year’s Summer Reading Challenge runs June 6 through August 1. Best of all, everyone gets a free book just for signing up.

Registration is simple. Stop by any DMPL branch, choose an activity log, and pick a book to take home. Three logs are available to fit different stages of reading: Read with Me (suggested ages 0-5), Learning to Read (suggested ages 6-8), and Readers (suggested ages 9-18). Each log combines reading time and hands-on activities, and kids can complete it as many times as they like.

You can sign up anytime throughout the summer. If you sign up on opening day (Saturday, June 6), you’ll receive a free summer reading tote bag while supplies last.

Every completed log earns a small prize — think keychains, stickers, pop toys, and erasers — plus an entry into the grand prize drawing. Three prize baskets are up for grabs: a STEM Basket, a Book Lover Basket, and a Culinary Basket. Participants choose which drawing to enter each time they complete a log, so the more logs you finish, the better your chances of winning. Winners are drawn at every branch twice during the summer — at the beginning of July and the beginning of August.

Prefer to track reading online? Register on Beanstack and visit any branch to claim your free book. You don’t need to have a library card to participate, but signing up for one is easy and free when you visit the library!

The last day to submit completion slips is Saturday, August 1

Camp Read S’more — a reading challenge for adults

Summer reading isn’t just for kids! Camp Read S’more, Des Moines Public Library’s Adult Summer Reading Challenge invites you to slow down, pick up a book, and make reading part of your daily routine.

The goal is simple: read for 30 minutes a day for 30 days throughout the summer and mark off each day on your progress sheet. When you reach 15 days, bring in your log to claim a book sale coupon. When you’re done with all 30 days, it’s time to claim the big prize. Turn in your log to any DMPL location by August 1 and bring home a fun Camp Read S’more-themed prize.

Pick up a reading log at any branch starting June 6.
