CHALLENGE CHALLENGE
June 7-August 2, 2025
Take the Summer Reading Challenge
The Des Moines Public Library’s 2025 Summer Reading Challenge begins Saturday, June 7. Children of all ages and their families are invited to visit any Des Moines Public Library location to sign up, receive a free book, and earn the chance to win fun prizes just for reading and participating in learning activities throughout the summer.
The Summer Reading Challenge supports children in maintaining the reading and literacy skills they developed during the school year. “Kids have lots of access to books and reading materials, but when the school year ends, that access disappears,” said Ashley Molzen, DMPL Community Engagement Manager. The challenge encourages children
to visit the library, explore new interests, and find books that spark their curiosity.
Participation is free and simple. When kids sign up, they’ll receive a new book to keep and an activity log. Each time they read for 20 minutes or complete a librarian-selected summer activity, they can fill in a space on the log. Completing the full log earns small prizes and entry into a grand prize drawing at the end of summer. The Challenge ends Saturday, August 2.
The challenge includes three age groups: Simple Steps pre-readers, elementary students, and those entering grades 6–12. Participants can also track their progress using the library’s Beanstack app.
Learn more at dmpl.org/summer-reading.
Camp Read S’More
Adults – take part in a fun new summer reading challenge just for you! Camp Read S’More is the perfect excuse to make time for reading this summer – and the perfect way to model a love of reading for your kids!
Pick up a reading log at any DMPL location or participate online with Beanstack. Each time you read for 30 minutes, fill in a spot. Complete all 30 to earn a chance at winning a Camp Read S’More tote bag.
Small prizes are available halfway through and at completion, and bonus challenges earn extra prize entries. Learn more at dmpl.org/camp-read-smore.
