In response to a $750,000 funding cut, the Des Moines Public Library Board of Trustees voted Wednesday to eliminate Sunday service hours beginning Sunday, November 1, 2026. The change impacts the two locations currently open on Sundays – Central Library and Franklin Avenue Library. The last day of Sunday service will be Sunday, October 25, 2026. Learn more at dmpl.org.

William Kent Krueger

Friday, October 2, 6:30 PM | Central Library (Doors open at 5:30 PM) On Friday, October 2, William Kent Krueger comes to Des Moines. The award-winning mystery writer will be releasing God’s Country on August 18, the 22nd installment in his Cork O’Connor series, set in Northern Minnesota. In this new tale, ominous visions shadow Cork O’Connor as a search for a missing friend drags him into a deadly hunt with the ruthless Kennedy brothers, forcing him to confront his darkest instincts and take justice into his own hands. This event will be moderated by Kali White VanBaale.

Wednesday, October 28, 7 PM | Central Library (Doors open at 6 PM) Lastly, on Wednesday, October 28, we’ll be joined by Craig Johnson, author of the popular Longmire series. The Brothers McKay, the 22nd book in that series, was released in May. The Brothers McKay is a murder mystery and a survival thriller that tests Sheriff Walt Longmire’s hard-won sense of justice — all while paying sly homage to the Dostoevsky’s classic The Brothers Karamozov. This event will be moderated by Heather Gudenkauf.

Tuesday, October 20 and November 17, 4 PM When you’re learning to read, practicing out loud can be daunting! Visit Central Library to practice reading with an ARL TheraPet. Engaging with animals is a great way to boost confidence and reduce anxiety around learning to read.

YSS Lighthouse – Outreach Services Tuesdays, 10:30 AM The YSS team provides street outreach services, including meal kits with snacks and water, hygiene kits, and weather survival kits with gloves and blankets. Radon Gas Awareness Program Tuesday, October 27, 6 PM Radon is a radioactive gas you can’t see, smell, or taste, and over 70% of Iowa homes test above the EPA action level. Join ISU Extension Polk County to learn about its health effects, testing, and mitigation. Those who register in advance will receive a short-term radon testing kit to take home.

Mail-a-Hug

Drop In: Perler Beads

Thursday, November 19, 5-7 PM Create a life-size “hug” to give to someone special. Using craft paper, trace your arms and decorate your hug with messages, drawings, and creative flair. We’ll provide the materials and postage to send your hug to a loved one.

Saturday, November 21, 12-4 PM Drop in the library and create a Perler bead masterpiece and fuse the beads together using heat. We will have fall-themed designs out for all to use.

Tuesday, October 6, 6 PM Step into the world of Tarot with Susan Harper! This beginner-friendly workshop covers the history of Tarot, the building blocks of a deck, and the difference between Tarot and Oracle cards. You’ll also learn spreads and reading techniques. Monday, October 12 & November 9, 2 PM Enjoy good books, great discussions, and meet fellow book lovers. Snacks and coffee are provided! In October, we’re reading Six of Crows, by Leigh Bardugo. In November, we’ll read The Art Thief, by Michael Finkel.

Wednesday, October 21, 1 PM Visit a variety of interactive stations covering topics such as smartphone features, email, AI, online privacy, and recognizing scams led by Grand View University students. Practice useful skills, ask questions, and take home simple guides for future reference.

Craft & Movie: Halloween Edition

Tuesday, October 13, 6:30 PM Celebrate our new circulating cake pan collection with a decorating demo from our guest baker, Alisa Woods owner of Sift n Sprinkle Bakery. Then enjoy handson time to browse the pans and try simple decorating techniques yourself. Frosting, tools, and inspiration provided! This cake pan collection was donated to the East Side Library by Angela Jackson.

VolunTeen Drop-In Hour Wednesday, October 14 & 28 and November 11 & 25 Earn volunteer hours by assisting with library programs and projects! Teens ages 12 to 18 can drop in every other Wednesday and volunteer for one hour. A volunteer application and parent/guardian-signed waiver must be submitted to South Side Library to participate.
