Pop-Up Fun on the South Side Library lawn Outdoor Obstacle Course: Thursday, July 15, 1 PM Challenge yourself with our outdoor obstacle course on the library lawn! For ages 5-12. Art Creations: Thursday, July 22, 1 PM Make and take artwork outside on the library lawn. Use our supplies to make any creation you choose! Ages 5-18. Sidewalk Painting: Thursday, July 29, 1 PM Listen to a story about colors, then paint our sidewalks with sidewalk chalk paint! Ages 6 and up.

Get Moving with Grace Fitness July 15 and 22, 2 PM | Forest Avenue Library lawn Bring your children and dance and move your body outdoors on the west lawn at Forest Avenue Library. Join us and fitness educator Zakiya Jenkins of Grace Fitness for a 30-minute workout session for the whole family. No equipment needed. All ages welcome.

ASAP Presents: Give This Artist a Hand! Tuesday, July 13, 2 PM | Facebook Join After School Arts Program (ASAP) teaching artist E.J. Frye for a virtual art lesson on how to make an ecosculpture in the shape of a hand. Learn how to create a life-size hand out of recycled materials like plastic bags and baking twine. Pick up supplies at any DMPL branch beginning on July 6. While supplies last.

Then join DMPL and community experts to get your questions answered in this four-session series. Know your body, know yourself, and get empowered! Topics and more information available at dmpl.org. July 6-10 | East Side Library Our Get Growing bags come with everything you need to grow some flowers this summer, plus educational activities and a painted rock craft. While supplies last.

July 12-18 | Facebook (pick up kits at Central Library) Stop inside Central Library or its pickup window and grab a Fairy Garden Kit to make at home with your family! These kits are suitable for children ages 4-12 and will contain some small parts that should have adult supervision. An instructional video will be posted on the library’s Facebook Page.

Library Learning Bags: Outdoor Fun Edition July 17-23 | All locations Stop by any of our six branches to pick up a Library Learning Bag. This month’s bag will include outdoor-themed activities, as well as a copy of Sesame Street’s picture book, Comfy-Cozy Nest. Learn to Slay: Intro to Dungeons and Dragons Wednesday, July 7 and 21, 3 PM | Zoom Have you ever wanted to slay a dragon, raid a dungeon treasure room, or even save a village from an evil bandit horde? Learn to Play the Ukulele Tuesday, July 6, 13, 20, & 27, 6:30 PM | Zoom Get started on the ukulele and quickly learn to play familiar tunes while having fun! Play your own ukulele or borrow one of North Side Library’s soprano ukuleles with your library card. During this four-week class, you’ll learn ukulele basics, chords, and strumming patterns. Take & Bake: S’mores Bars Thursday, July 8, 6 PM | Zoom Learn how to make your favorite campfire treat right in your home. Register to receive a s’mores kit with almost all the ingredients you’ll need. (Participants will need their own 9-by-13 inch pan, butter and parchment paper.) Potato Print Workshop Wednesday, July 14, 11 AM | East Side Library Join us for an experimental printmaking workshop using potatoes! We will use kitchen knives to cut our designs and acrylic paint to print them. Frames will be provided for each attendee to take home their creations. Masks are encouraged. Registration required.

Spark Stories: Nate Evans Wednesday, July 14, 6:30 PM | Facebook and YouTube Nate Evans is the founder of Woodworking with a Purpose, which makes desks and furniture for families in need. When many schools moved online during the pandemic, Nate built more than 2,100 free desks for local families. Hear what inspired him to make Des Moines a better place to live.

LGBTQIA+ Health Care in the Des Moines Metro Thursday, July 15, 6 PM | Zoom Join us for a panel presentation about LGBTQIA+ healthcare focusing on three main areas: How to find LGBTQIA+ healthcare (physical and mental care) and how to access it (a focus on under/ un-insured); health concerns that are specific to LGBTQIA+ patients; and how to advocate for oneself or a loved one in healthcare settings. Following the presentation, we’ll have breakout rooms for you to ask questions of our panelists. Registration required.

Make a Watercolor Book Friday, July 16, 10 AM, Forest Avenue Library lawn Come to Forest and make your own watercolor book! We’ll each paint a big sheet of paper, then divide it up and make a book out of it. This program is geared to adults, and while all ages are welcome, kids who will need help folding and tearing thick paper should be accompanied by adults.

The Natural Landscaping at the Franklin Avenue Library Monday, July 19, 6 PM | Franklin Avenue Library lawn Joel Van Roekel, supervisor of environmental education for Des Moines Parks and Recreation, will speak about the native plant species and the benefits they provide in the natural landscape that surrounds the Franklin Avenue Library. This is an outdoor program requiring limited walking during early evening summer sun, so dress appropriately.

Surviving to Thriving in a Pandemic Wednesday, July 28, 2 PM | Franklin Avenue Library Two licensed therapists will join us to talk about ways to manage feelings related the changes in the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This program is for anyone who is trying to adapt to another new normal after the stresses caused by the pandemic and the rapid shutdowns and reopenings.
