Please wear play clothes as some activities may be messy. For ages 0-5.

Gingerbread House Decorating Monday, December 4, 5 PM and 6:30 PM | Franklin Avenue Library We will provide all of the materials to make an amazing gingerbread house fit for an elf. Each family that registers will receive one house to decorate together. Please register the name of one person to represent your family. Registration required.

Movie Watch Party Monday, December 4 and January 8, 4 PM | Forest Avenue Library Join us for a family friendly movie with popcorn and an activity! In December, we’ll watch the animated version of Beauty and the Beast (G). In January, we’ll watch the Disney nature movie Penguins (G).

Stuffy Sleepover Storytime Tuesday, December 5, 4 PM | Central Library Bring your stuffy friend to the Central Library to enjoy a fun storytime together before leaving your buddy at the library overnight to get into some mischief! Pick your pal up the following day and see photos of all the shenanigans they get into during their stay at the library.

Science Wednesdays Wednesday, December 6 and January 10, 4 PM | Franklin Avenue Library Science Wednesdays is a chance for kids ages six to twelve to explore different aspects of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). In December, you will take on the challenge of creating your own marble maze to take home. In January, you’ll create a ping pong ball launcher and spinning top. Registration required.

Ice Age Party Friday, December 8, 2 PM | Forest Avenue Library Enjoy a showing of the movie Ice Age with hot chocolate and popcorn as well as a wintery watercolor and salt painting project! For ages 6+.

Family Health & Safety Fair Friday, December 8, 3-5 PM | Central Library Join us at Central for a family health fair! We’ll give you some good ideas for healthy meals and information that will keep your family safe. The fair will include a doctor, a dentist, a nutritionist, and more.

Make Your Own Slime Friday, December 8, 4 PM | South Side Library Make your very own slime any way you like! We’ll provide the slime, and you can choose what to mix with it, from glitter to scents to colors and more!

Tippi Toes Dance Class Saturday, December 9, 10:30 AM | Central Library Tippi Toes’s exciting, high energy dance classes are the perfect opportunity for kids to try something new while having a blast and burning some energy! For ages 2-10.

PAWS and Read with Therapy Dogs Saturday, December 9, 11 AM | East Side Library PAWS and Read with therapy dogs from Dog Training Elite in Des Moines. We will also have supplies to make a DIY braided dog toy, while supplies last. Reading to trained therapy pets can help build self-esteem, offers children a chance to build skills and confidence.

STEAM Cart Hazmat Challenge

Thursday, January 18, 5-8 PM | East Side Library Stop by and pick up a bag to take home and make your very own crystalized Yeti. Materials and directions from CreativeBug will be included in the bag. Creativebug offers online video arts and crafts workshops and techniques and can be used for free with your library card.

Tuesday, January 16, 2 PM | East Side Library Using the materials from our new STEAM Cart we will complete a challenge together. The challenge: There’s been a disaster! Containers holding nuclear waste were damaged in an accident, and the radioactive waste must be moved from the damaged containers to new ones. Using whatever TeacherGeek parts you have, you’ll need to design a solution!

Teen Tech Mondays Monday, December 11, 6 PM | Forest Avenue Library Teens, come to the Forest Avenue Library the second Monday of every month and check out our tech center. We will have iPads with Procreate, a green screen, 3-D pens, and more! Ages 12+.

Cozy Hot Cocoa Jars Tuesday, December 12, 4 PM | South Side Library Decorate a jar and fill it with a hot cocoa mix as unique as you! We’ll bring the ingredients, the jars, and the craft supplies; you bring your wonderful self! Best for ages 8-18. While supplies last.

The Art of Expression Wednesday, December 20 and January 31, 5 PM | Franklin Avenue Library The Art of Expression is a monthly program for teens to learn and create different types of art in a relaxed atmosphere. In December, we’ll do Self “Poor Traits.” In January, we’ll take a crack at watercolor techniques.

Ceramic Tile Decorating Friday, December 22, 2:30 PM | Central Library Ceramic tiles make a great gift for the holidays or a fun activity with friends. Each person will be able to decorate a tile with stickers, scrapbook paper, and other supplies provided. For a more personal touch, bring a picture of you and your friends, family, or favorite pet!

Resin Charms Wednesday, January 24, 4 PM | South Side Library Learn to make charms for keychains, jewelry, bookmarks and more using UV resin and shrinky dink paper! Whether you design your own or use our templates, you can make your charm as unique as you are with cool mix-ins like color and glitter. Ages 8-18, while supplies last.

Tech Take-Apart Wednesday, January 24, 4 PM | Central Library If you’ve ever wondered what’s inside old electronics, now’s your chance to find out! Each participant will have the chance to open up a used piece of tech and see what’s inside. Use the parts to make a piece of art that you can take home with you and proudly display.

Community advocates and the DMPL’s new Community Resource Specialist will provide information about resources like meal sites and shelters, and offer support for things like scheduling health appointments and more.

Monday, December 4, 3 PM | North Side Library Join us for a computer basics class and increase your tech skills.

In December, you’ll learn how to navigate Windows, work with applications with task manager, manage files and folders, and more.

Sit n’ Stitch Saturday, December 2 and January 6, 1:30-3:30 PM | North Side Library Spend a few hours with other crafters and work on your knit, crochet, or needle craft projects. Please bring your own supplies and projects with you. In December, we’ll have a special yarn swap during the program.

DMPL is offering free presentations on Des Moines’ fascinating past. In addition, learn about the resources the library offers on the history of your city, neighborhood, or house.

Virtual Cookbook Club Thursday, January 25, 6:30 PM | Zoom Join us from the comfort of your own homes and kitchens for a book club that celebrates substitutions, creativity, sustainability, and independence in home cooking. This month we will be cooking from Cook As You Are: Recipes for Real Life, Hungry Cooks and Messy Kitchens by Ruby Tandoh. Books can be picked up at the North Side Library during open hours.

How to Ride DART Friday, January 26, 2 PM | Central Library DART staff will lead a training to help individuals learn to ride the bus in Greater Des Moines, as well provide updates on new programs and services. Training will demonstrate how to plan a trip, read maps and schedules, pay fares, and more. Attendees will receive a free monthly bus pass.
