Welcome to Next Month at Central! This is a newsletter for those who use Central Library to make sure you know all the latest library events and updates happening at your neighborhood library

Here you will find updates about new additions, staff introductions, and featured programs for kids, teens, and adults happening at your library!

Independence Day Closure

All DMPLlocations will be closed on Friday, July 4 for the Independence Day holiday. Normal hours will resume on Saturday, July 5.

Summer at the library

The Des Moines Public Library's Summer Reading Challenge is in full swing!

Kids work their way through our challenge program by reading for 20 minutes or completing various learning activities. Once the challenge is complete, turn in your worksheet and you'll get a small prize and be eligible for the big prizes in our end-of-summer drawing.

The challenge goes throughAugust 2, so there is still time to register and get started!

Adventurers by Jacque Fabritz coming to the Central LibraryArt Gallery

Show: July 11-August 11

Opening Reception : July 11, 4-6 PM

Beginning July 11, a new art show will be on display in the Central LibraryArt Gallery.

Adventurers is a unique art exhibition of work of Jacque Fabritz.The heartfelt paintings are reminiscent of childhood and leisure activities.

Fabritz has explores adding dimension to her paintings using Balsa wood.

Sculpt butter with the Iowa State Fair Butter Sculptor, Sarah Pratt

Central Library Monday, July 28 5-6 PM & 6:30-7:30 PM

Sarah Pratt, the Iowa State Fair Butter sculptor, is back to teach you about the art of sculpting the famous butter cow

Each participant will receive a stick of butter to sculpt and can choose to take their masterpiece home or give it to Sarah to mix into this year’s sculpture.

Registration is required, and space is limited.

This month Polk County Conservation is coming to Central Library for a series of three animal programs for kids and families.

Get an up-close look at live insects with a naturalist and learn about these fascinating creatures.

Meet a live owl, view several taxidermy mounts, and learn about the unique adaptations that make owls skilled predators.

Discover these fascinating creatures that transform from egg to adult. Join us to learn about amphibians and meet some live ones, with the help of a naturalist!

Central Library Sunday, July 20 2-3 PM

Join HeathAlan from the Central Iowa Blues Society to explore the history of the blues. During the program Heath will demonstrate the chords, beats, rhythms, and stories that go into the music.

School of Adventure: Learn to Play D&D

Monday, July 21 3-6 PM

Learn to play Dungeons and Dragons with the help of the Dealt Hand!

Staff from the Dealt Hand will guide attendees through a campaign to learn the game through active game play. Register to attend.

Watermelon Party

Thursday, July 31 10:15-10:45AM

Celebrate summer with all things watermelon!At this special Wiggles and Giggles storytime on the Central Library lawn eat watermelon, do watermelon crafts, play games, and more!Add the event to your calendar.

Circle Brass Quintet

It is not too late to head back to the days of summer camp and join the DMPLAdult Summer Reading Challenge.

Read 30 days between May 31 andAugust 2 to earn prizes and be entered into the grand prize drawing.
