MESSSSAGE FROM F THE T DIR RECTOR Messaage from the Director Our futu ure prosperrity dependss on our abiility to prod duce food, en nergy, clean n water, good ds and infrrastructure while proteecting and n nurturing ou ur planet. Th he depletion n of natural resources, along wiith rising po opulations, ggreenhousee gas emissions, consum mer demand d and matterials consumption is creating im mmense presssures on ou ur planet an nd its inhabitaants. The chaallenges are immense, b but it is posssible to thrivve and brin ng about pro osperity while sustainiing our plan net. The disciplines of eengineeringg, architectu ure, and urb ban planningg are play ying key rolees in meetin ng this goal, particularlyy in the con ntext of deveeloping sustainaable paradig gms for our urban and industrial in nfrastructu ure. TISED b brings togetther research hers and prractitioners from these disciplines,, as well as ffrom a varieety of other disciplin nes, in creatting and pro omoting susstainable ro admaps forr our cities aand industriies. We havee defined ou ur strategic priorities T TISED for the coming yeears. TISED will contrib bute to transsforming ressearch into aaction, inforrming and eempoweringg the publicc and decisio on‐ makers around susstainability iissues throu ugh public p policy semin nars and wh hite papers on the rolee technology y can play in n bringing about sustain nable devellopment. A year aafter our insstitute was ccreated, we are at an exxciting perio od of growth and activiity. Our mem mbership in ncludes app proximately 45 faculty m members frrom McGill E Engineeringg. They arre distinguisshed scholarrs who work k in interdissciplinary teeams on tecchnological and policy d dimensions of critical en nvironmenttal and sustaainability isssues. TISED is activelyy engaged d with engin neering stud dents in actiivities related to sustaiinability ressearch, learn ning and outtreach. We aare building a solid parttnership wi th the Instittut de l’é nerrgie Trottierr (IET) att Polytechnique Montréé al through active collab boration on n various iniitiatives. We are p pleased to p present the 2013‐2014 4 edition of oour Annual Report whiich showcasses our progress and in nitiatives to be launcheed. I am deligghted to shaare the wayys in which TISED iss building aa strong netw work of taleented indivi duals engagged in sustaainability in engineeering and deesign – we m must come ttogether to d deal with so ome of the w world’s mosst complexx problems..

TISED D’S HISTTORY TISED D’s Historry Higher eeducation h has played a major role in illuminatting the natture of sustaainability challeng ges. McGill’ss Faculty of Engineering embarked d on its quesst in findingg sustainablle solution ns to the com mplex challeenges for yeears with a cconcerted aand collaborrative effortt. In fact, “En ngineering aand design ffor sustainaability” is on ne of the fivee strategic rresearch areeas of the Faaculty. Many y researcheers here are investigatin ng ways in w which we caan reduce ou ur impact o on the envirronment an nd on the plaanet and ou ur society. Th his includess research o on topics such as the b built infrastrructure, susstainable urrban transpo ortation sysstems and aalso newable eneergy sourcess and techn ologies, carrbon capturee and storagge aspects such as ren hin this areaa are found across the ffive and sustainable mineral extracction. Reseaarchers with Engineeering Departments and d the two pro ofessional SSchools of A Architecture and Urban Plannin ng, and inclu ude five Canada Researcch Chairs an nd five interrnal McGill cchairs. We place grreat importaance in susttainability‐ffocused teacching and reesearch them mes such ass clean en nergy, sustainable manu ufacturing, greenhousee gas capturre and storaage, etc. With the mandatess to embed aa culture of sustainabiliity at the Faaculty of En ngineering ― ― oss McGill ― ― and to wo ork with academic, indu ustry and go overnment p partners to and acro promote sustainable principlees and practices, ISEAD (the Institu ute for Sustaainability in n Engineeering and Deesign) was llaunched in n 2010 with support fro om alumnuss Ram Pandaa (M. Eng g. ‘71, MBA ’7 77). Building g on ISEAD, TISED was established d in 2012 th hrough a gen nerous $10..25‐million gift from disstinguished d alumnus Lorne Trottieer (B. Eng. ‘7 70, M. Eng. ‘73, D. Sc. ‘0 06), through h the Lorne T Trottier Fam mily Foundattion. All of IS SEAD’s proggrams and aactivities haave been incorpo orated into tthe new, bro oader‐based d Trottier In nstitute, and d specificallyy, the new th hink tank adds a public p policy dimeension that eenables McG Gill Engineeering to promote h and publicc interaction n. university outreach
